Shortly before new councillors for Mopani District Municipality (MDM) could be ushered in, in the next few months, it emerged in an internal audit that over R513 million was irregularly paid to four construction companies. It was also discovered that some officials failed to declare their interests in the contracts. This was in contradiction with the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) regulating municipal finances. The Mopani District’s municipal manager, Republic Monakedi, has since left the services of the municipality while the deputy Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and the supply chain manager were both dismissed. According to the report, the Bid Adjudicating Committee (BAC) was improperly constituted as the CFO did not participate in the awarding of the tenders. The deputy CFO paid the amounts. The regulations stated clearly that the CFO should preferably be the chairperson of the adjudication committee.

Monakedi was the acting municipal manager for a time in Tzaneen before the arrival of Thapelo Matlala saw him vacate his position under a cloud of controversy, and redeploy at the Mopani District Municipality. During his time in Polokwane, he was burgled by armed robbers and a few million in cash was stolen from his safe in his home office. For a number of years, the trade unions were complaining that the since the arrival of Stan Mathabatha as Limpopo Premier, municipalities in the Mopani District were managed by deployees from Polokwane (which is where Tzaneen’s Matlala was sourced from). According to the report, the BAC had on the advice of the accounting officer, Republic Monakedi, appointed the deputy CFO, and allegedly awarded four companies tenders irregularly. The four companies were, Lebp Contruction, Zenobia Trading 242, Selby Construction, and Mbanga Trading Enterprise. They scored R234 million in irregular tenders. In some cases, each of these four companies were awarded different tenders on the same day.

In an attempt to hit back, Monakedi contested the findings saying that the adjudication committee constituted a quorum and not necessarily a formation. “The finding is not about the quorum of the BAC and it is about formation as required by the regulations. The BAC was not correctly constituted in line with regulation 29. In the BAC report to the accounting officer, the BAC advised the accounting officer to take note of the fact that neither the CFO or deputy manager from Budget and Treasury were present in the sitting,” stated the report. “The advice shows that the BAC was aware that the committee was not properly constituted, hence the advice to the accounting officer. The findings and the irregular expenditure should be disclosed and reported by the management.” It was also revealed that the tenders were not advertised on the municipal website and not all the bids received, were recorded and evaluated. The report further warned of possible litigation by the unsuccessful bidders who were unfairly disqualified. Officials who were implicated in the wrongdoing are not exempt either.

Shorence Delson Nghala (50) was sentenced by the Mpumalanga High Court in Graskop on Monday, 6th of September, to a life sentence and an additional 15-year imprisonment for robbery and the murder of his ex-lover, Zanele Makhubela (20). Nghala who is from Mkhuhlu near Bushbuckridge was convicted of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances after he pleaded guilty to both offences. In his plea statement, he told the court that on the 27th of October 2020 the deceased, Zanele Makhubela, was in her home with her boyfriend near Mantangaleni, Mkhuhlu, when he emerged, and this angered him. Dozens of colleauges from the media industry and politicians gathered at Mulati village south of Letsitele town on Saturday, the 3rd of September to bid farewell to one of the longest standing reporters in Tzaneen. Her name was Glacier Nkhensani Nkhwashu (42) and she started reporting with the Northern Star and later joined the Capricorn Voice in Polokwane before joining Bulletin in its formative years 18 years ago. At the time of her death, she was employed at the Daily Sun. Her death sent shock waves throughout the media fraternity a fortnight ago when it was reported that she died at Ga-Rapitsi village outside Ga-Kgapane after being runover by a truck while seated with a friend on the side of the road on

the 19th of August. The driver of the truck who fled the scene was arrested by police a short while later and is due to appear in court soon. Her deaths follows that of Michael Sakuneka of Mokwakwaila village in the Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM) who died in February after a short illness. Sakuneka was at the time of his death freelancing for Bulletin after having been laid off in Polokwane as a result of the hard lockdown. Nkhwashu, in her time at Daily Sun, won the Standard Bank Sivukile Journalism Award and Media 24 Legends award. She worked for publications such as Opera News, Sowetan, Daily Sun, the South African and the Star. The South African Editors Forum (SANEF) expressed its deepest condolences to her family and colleagues.

a result, the court heard, he stabbed Makhubela with a knife several times until she died. According to the police he then fled the scene with the deceased’s cellphone. The judge, Johanna Mthimunye, sentenced Nghala to life for murder and fifteen years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances. The court ordered the sentence in count two to run concurrently with the sentence in count one. The effective sentence being life. Nghala was also declared unfit to possess a firearm as part of the sentence. The Judge further ordered that the deceased’s family must be consulted to make a representation when Nghala is eligible for parole.

Publicity before the delivery of services

■ Joe Dreyer The water crisis in Phalaborwa and surrounding areas is worsening as the mayor and her executive continue ignoring the plight of their residents in search of publicity stunts ahead of the elections. Some parts of the town are left without water for more than three days per cycle, at least twice a week. Phalaborwa is run by the troubled Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, which is still being investigated for corruption by the Limpopo Hawks. Ironically, there are parts of this town which are continuously flooded by clean drinking water such as in Batavier Street. This while Hardekool, Sealane Flats, Bosvlier, Bronkhorst, and Nolie Bosman Streets sit without water. Residents in Batavier Street say that the water leak was reported numerous times and has been running non-stop for more than a year. The water shortage is blamed mainly on ageing infrastructure and a complete lack of maintenance by the department supposedly in charge of this vital basic right. Not surprisingly, the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality has shifted the blame onto the Mopani District Municipality on whose shoulder as

they claim, the responsibility rests. This despite it being public knowledge that the maintenance of the water supply network within local municipalities remain the responsibility of that particular municipality. This was made very clear a year ago when the Mopani District Municipality sent one of its teams to assist the Phalaborwa Municipality in repairing a burst pipe. Not surprisingly, when Bulletin asked for comment on the issue, the spokesperson for the Phalaborwa Municipality, Jonas Mahesu, requested an email to be drafted which he would then forward to the municipal manager for comment. This was done and to this day no comment has been received. We do not understand why a communications department exists when no communication exists from the department. We fail to understand why the media cannot communicate directly with this particular municipal manager and cut out the middleman, when essentially all the middleman is doing, is forwarding emails. In the meantime the silence breeds content within the community as the faucets remain as barren as the hopes of a new municipal elite that would carry the interests of their salary payers at heart.

Daytime dumpers have no shame

When we asked this TLB operator who gave him permission to dump at this site he said, “nobody, I saw the other people dumping so I came here too.”

■ Joe Dreyer The GTM is again proving its inability to enforce its own bylaws. Illegal outdoor advertising and loitering notwithstanding, illegal dumping has become so blatant in Boundary Street, that trucks, bakkies and even TLBs are dumping garden refuse, and building rubble by the truckload daily. The open piece of land on the turn as you approach the four-way stop near Pioneers complex now resembles the landfill site – just not as well kept. Last year, Bulletin reported on this and very little has been done on the part of the municipality to put an end to it. In the GTM’s Environmental Health bylaws under chapter 2: Health Hazards it clearly states that no person may create a public health hazard and that the owners of the land in question will be held responsible. The bylaw further defines a health hazard and clearly warns that any

The occupants of this bantam bakkie stopped and off-loaded all their garden refuse.

person who does not abide by the laws commits a punishable offence. Given that we have spoken to the owner of this piece of land in the past, Renier de Lange, and given that he has done everything in his power to prevent the dumping, Bulletin turned to the municipality for answers. “I have passed by the site and will have a look at what’s going on,” said Neville Ndlala, spokesperson for the GTM. At the time of going to print we have however not received any feedback on the matter from him. We are still waiting for his department to issue us with a list of registered water tankers who keep drawing water from the fire hydrants, as well. In the past, De Lange explained that he was in the process of selling the stand to a local businessman, who immediately started dumping building rubble on the site whilst the purchase was being finalised.

This Hyundai flatbed decided that the open pavement beneath the billboard would be a great place to dump a tonne of building rubble.

When the sale fell through the mat however, he simply continued sending his trucks and bakkies to dump on the site despite it not being his property and he therefore had no rights to do so. The man has since ignored every attempt to contact him on his cell and because of his behaviour, others have joined in the act without fear of prosecution. This has led to De Lange having to pay for a TLB to level the site every month and short of having to erect a palisade fence to keep people out, he has run out of options. Bulletin has decided to publish photographs of the vehicles who stop at the site, completely ignore the “no dumping” sign, and illegally dump their waste there, in the paper each week. It is creating a hazardous environment for the old folk who live in the complex opposite this new dump, and it must be stopped. We await response from the municipality on the issue.

Vodacom Limpopo Region donates laptops to the Limpopo Department of Social Development to be used by Social Workers doing critical community work in deep rural areas ■ Vodacom Limpopo Region Communications POLOKWANE – Vodacom Limpopo Region is announcing that it has donated laptops to the Department of Social Development in Limpopo. These laptops will be used by social workers who are doing critical social development work in deep rural areas across the province. Social workers within the province perform their duties in deep rural areas by using exercise books and writing pads which makes it difficult for them to compile reports in real-time. In most cases, these social workers use shared computers to capture data and compile reports and this hinders their work and delays resolutions to some of the complex and emergency cases they are dealing with. The laptops from Vodacom will enable social workers to work remotely, produce reports in real-time and to participate in virtual meetings during the pandemic. Imran Khan, Managing Executive for Vodacom Limpopo Region says: “The Covid-19 pandemic has intensified the need for more social workers in our society as they continue to provide essential support to many families and children that are facing difficult challenges. When the provincial Department of Social Development indicated to us that most of the social workers doing important work in our communities did not have tools to do their work, we did not think twice about getting involved. This is part of our Social Contract to help the department of social department through the use of technology to assist in an efficient manner the most vulnerable people in our society.” Social work is a dynamic profession that promotes social change, problem-solving in human relationships

and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance well-being. Social workers provide protection, support and assistance to individuals, families and children who are vulnerable, in need or are enduring a crisis. Early this month, the Vodacom Foundation, the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Social Development announced a new private public partnership initiative: the launch of a new ecosystem, aimed at using public schools as platforms to tackle Gender Based Violence in society. The Vodacom-led initiative was first conceptualised in 2019 when the DBE made a plea to Vodacom to provide psycho-social support in schools due to the high prevalence of gender-based violence. According to the UN, school-related gender-based violence is a major obstacle to universal schooling and the right to education for girls. Globally, one in three students, aged 11–15, have been bullied by their peers at school at least once in the past month. Girls are more likely to experience psychological bullying and have reported being made fun of because of their physical appearances, more frequently than boys. The social workers who received training from Stellenbosch University are doing group and individual intervention sessions with learners, teachers, School Governing Bodies (SGBs), youth and women formations. These are focused on specific modules that cover GBV, bullying, self-esteem and violence. Those who have gone through the programme have a responsibility to share knowledge with family, friends and other community members. Thus, over time every learner carries the light and inspire many to become forces of positive change.

Poachers get 105 years ■ Billy Sibuyi Three rhino poachers were sentenced to a combined 105 years in prison for rhino poaching and other offences by the Rhino Court in Skukuza on Thursday the 2nd of September. The three poachers were arrested in 2017 after slaughtering three rhinos in the Marula section of the Kruger National Park. Two of the convicted poachers, Shangani Mathebula (29) and Emmanuel Mdhluli (32), are from Mozambique, whilst Walter Hendrik Mangane (58) is a South African. In delivering the sentences, the magistrate explained in detail, the way the three poachers killed three rhinos in execution style and were caught red handed whilst in the process of plundering the horns. Reacting to the sentences, the Managing Executive of the KNP, Gareth Coleman, congratulated the Environmental Crime Investigative Unit and Ranger Services for working closely with the Investigating Officer and the other South African Police Service Units to bring about solid evidence before the court. “These sentences should serve as a deterrent to

those intending to come and kill our natural heritage and destroying the livelihoods of our people. We have in the past few months intensified our security efforts in the park to good effect, but successful convictions requires that the prosecutorial and justice pillars in our society are operating effectively,” said Coleman. DA Member of Parliament, Dave Bryant, said that SANParks continued to set an annual poaching ‘target’ of 250 rhinos and with 241 rhinos killed by poachers this year, SANParks was currently deemed to be on target. “The disturbing reality is these 250 rhinos represent roughly seven percent of the KNP’s total estimated rhino population of 3 529. With an estimated rhino growth rate of between five and six percent a year it means Kruger’s rhino population will continue to decline even if SANParks targets are achieved,” he said. “SANParks appears to be moving desperately to protect the last few thousand rhinos by corralling them in protected zones in the park,” he said, blaming the government which according to him appears to have chosen to look the other way while the last great herds of South Africa’s wild rhinos are picked off one by one.

Three-way alliance a benefit for all ■ Roelof de Jonge A collaboration between the Tzaneen Landfill Site and Protonka Recycling has initiated a winwin situation for both parties. This alliance does not only benefit these two entities, but also the workers of the landfill site who sort through and collect plastic, glass and cardboard materials to be recycled. The workers are not employed by Protonka or the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, but are registered independent contractors who earn a living through sifting through and collecting as much of the recyclable material as they can muster. The collected material is then taken to the Protonka Buyback centre where it is weighed, and the contractor paid accordingly. To encourage contractors to collect more raw recyclables, Protonka Recycling through its owner Mike Zervogiannis, launched an incentive scheme where the contractors who collect the most tonnage in a month, are rewarded for their efforts with some worthwhile prizes like home appliances and even cash. This initiative which kicked off two years ago, has benefitted all parties including the world-class landfill site, and has helped restore some workplace joy among the group of waste pickers. On Monday the 6th of September, Selina Mathebula was the recipient of a brand new Defy fridge and freezer combo after she collected the most plastic waste for the month. Plastic is more valuable than glass in the recycling game, and so the pickers focus their

efforts on mining this proverbial junkyard gold. Zervogiannis, along with manager Jurie Vorster, handed the fridge over to an elated Mathebula. “We try to keep our landsite as clean and stench free as possible. By collaborating with Protonka Recycling, we manage to have more free space, which means less waste lying around. This helps us to keep the landfill site as clean as possible,” explained Eugene Schutte, Regional Waste Management Officer of the Tzaneen Landfill site. “And it serves well as an encouragement for the workers to collect and sort out as much as possible plastic and glass to be recycled.” “This is a three-party contribution. The recycled waste is good for our business, it helps to clean-up the landfill site so that it does not fill up as quickly, and the workers get goals to achieve which benefits them in the form of lucrative rewards,” added Zervogiannis. “Next month, October the 6th, the next round of prize winners will be announced. The prize up for grabs this time round is a high-quality laptop.”

National parks Week postponed until November ■ Billy Sibuyi

The 16th annual SA National Parks Week has been postponed until November. This after a decision by SANParks, in conjunction with Total Energies, and FNB to move the annual week where South African citizens can spend time in the park free of charge, ahead with two months. The decision according to SANParks General Manager of Media, PR and Stakeholder Relations, Rey Thakhuli, comes after the number of Covid-19 infections increased in South Africa.

“SANParks is postponing the free access week, which is traditionally held in September, to November, due to concerns regarding the number of Covid-19 cases across the country. The safety of both guests and staff is of utmost priority and we therefore have to ensure that we are in a position to effectively implement the Covid-19 visitor management procedures in all our parks at all times,” stated Thakhuli. SA National Parks Week is an annual weeklong campaign that provides all South African citizens the opportunity to visit national parks for free.

NTT Isuzu gifts life

Mass cleanup planned

■ Jeff Jackson

■ Billy Sibuyi

After eight long years without running water, the children and teachers at Masungulo 2 Primary School just outside Nkowankowa, are thirsty no more. In August 2020 the team from NTT Isuzu Tzaneen stepped in and helped construct a borehole on the premises. In the last year the students at this school took advantage of this borehole and started growing their own vegetable garden. The produce is harvested and sold on the market and even to one of the big national retailers. The proceeds are

ploughed back into the school and the next crop, making this a truly encouraging story. On Friday last week, the school decided to show their appreciation to the NTT Isuzu Tzaneen team and invited them over to their school for a thanksgiving ceremony. It was a truly grand affair attended by councillors from the Greater Tzaneen Municipality and various other stakeholders from the local community. The children performed songs and dances and four students recited poems they wrote in appreciation for the investment made by Marco Lottering and his team.

Can you ‘Dance Monkey’? ■ Joe Dreyer It would appear as though the feel-good initiative in the form of the public piano at Lifestyle Centre, has taken hold of Tzaneen. In the last month, a total of 25 pianists have sat on the throne and made the ivories dance, much to the delight of visitors to the shopping centre. Because of the success of this project, Bulletin and Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre have launched a competition open to all pianists who wish to showcase their talents. The competition is simple. Take a friend along to record a video of you performing your best rendition of the now super-popular “Dance Monkey” by Tones and I, upload it onto your Facebook profile, tag Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre, tag Far North Bulletin and get your friends to do the same. The competition entries will be judged by Chris Mocke of Katbok Radio and the winners will be announced on both Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre and Far

North Bulletin Facebook pages on the 29th of October 2021. The winner will receive a R1 000 shopping voucher from the store of their choice inside the Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre and a 1 hour recording session at Katbok Studios. Second place will receive a R500 shopping voucher and third prize will be a R250 shopping voucher. The rules are easy to follow and must be adhered to or your entry will be disqualified. No singing allowed, no duets allowed, videos must be uploaded to Facebook, you have to like Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre and far North Bulletin Facebook pages in order to tag them in your upload. The performance must be a rendition of Dance Monkey and be as creative as you can muster. The piece must be performed on the Public Piano situated at the Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre. Competition starts officially on the 10th of September (today) and will close on the 29th of October. Videos uploaded after this time will not be considered. Open to all age groups. Judge’s decision is final.

The Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation (PNHF) will be hosting a cleanup day next week Tuesday, 14th of September. This was after SANParks approached them and asked if they could do a clean up drive, to which they agreed. The cleanup will fall under the National Cleanup week, where communities across the world will be doing their part in cleaning up the environment. Eugene Troskie, of the PNHF, told Bulletin that since they started planning for this cleanup, they have received numerous donations from businesses across Phalaborwa and received a commitment from the mines that some of their employees will be a part of the cleanup on that day. “We have already purchased tongs and other tools to use when we collect the litter. We have also secured a TLB as a donation from Coastal Plant Hire and we just need to get a tipper truck now,” said Troskie. The cleanup is open to the whole community who wants to take part in making the environment a better place. “Cleanups are an important building block to environmentalism and civic action that anybody can participate in. This is a great way to con-

nect with others, build a network of like-minded people, and tackle the issue of mismanaged waste. Everyone deserves a clean community.” He also said that Tyremart and Supaquick each pledged R2 500 and that other companies are also welcome to lend a helping hand, however they can. The community are urged to join on Tuesday from 07:00 at Bollanoto Tourism Centre across Spar, where they will help in removing the rubble behind spar, along the Copper Road, R71, and around Bollanoto.

Eerste Leyd’s mark beslis een van vele ■ Roelof de Jonge

Boesemvriende Herman en Armand Pieterse het reggestaan met hul skaapskenkel en groente potjiekosdis. Hulle was uiteindelik tweede algeheel.

Overwhelming support for Wolfpack ■ Joe Dreyer With just a week left before the inaugural Warriors Wolfpack Marathon send hundreds of athletes around the Tzaneen dam, entries have been streaming in. So much so that organizers were granted permission to extend the entry deadline and allow more runners to enter. “Such crazy times we are in with an incredible group of runners! We have been swamped with requests to extend the entry deadline, and so it was that on bended knee, tears brimming in our baby blue eyes, we begged and the powers that be said yes!” said an ecstatic Tracey van den Dool, race director for the marathon. Though the initial entries were somewhat slow due to the online registration process hampering most of the rural running clubs from entering, the organizers found a way around this by opening the field to manual entries this past weekend. It worked and the number of entries skyrocketed after a few hours at Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre and a site in Polokwane. The entry fee for the 42.2km race is only R329.25, for the 32km it is R275.80, for the 21km the fee is R222.35 and for the 10 kilometre race it will be only R104.90. Entry fees include Registration and time keeping by Peak Timing. There will be waterpoints scattered across the beautiful, yet challenging course which will see runners circumvent the Tzaneen dam. “To be able to run, actually get out there and feel the wind in your face and the tar under your feet is something our local runners have been deprived of for so many months, because of the lockdown regulations. It really is no wonder that the event has been received with so much excitement!” Van den Dool added. “Virtual racing just is not the same. Most of these athletes were forced to run the Comrades on their balcony for crying out loud. Now they can finally run to their hearts’ content. So we invite all of you to come and enter for the race this weekend.” According to Van den Dool, the 42.2 kilometre event is recognized as a qualifier for the Two Oceans marathon which should be a good incentive for the local runners. There are currently eight waterpoints still available for companies wanting to participate. Businesses who wish to become involved in the sponsoring of waterpoints can stop by at the Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre and make the necessary arrangements, or

they can contact Tracey directly on 083 968 0902. All the water for the waterpoints will be supplied free of charge and businesses will only be required to provide add-ons such as energy jellies, or even baked potatoes depending on where the waterpoint is situated and for which race. For further information please visit the Bulletin Facebook page or like the Warriors Wolfpack marathon 4-in1 Facebook page. Medals and prize monies are up for grabs along with some exciting giveaways for the top runners. “Did you know we run an internationally accredited gap year programme? We also offer several school and corporate workshops, yep, an entire year of programmes to focus on helping people find their passion through adventure and coaching which facilitates personal growth and development - growing global citizens.” By entering this marathon, you will assist in putting deserving scholars through the programme by way of a scholarship.

Local swimmers outperform visitors at sprint ■ Joe Dreyer

Milan Ferreira of TASK

Swimming season officially breached the surface this weekend, the 4th of September, with the Age Group 3 Sprint Gala held at the indoor pool at Ben Vorster High School. Swimmers from both local swimming clubs and even as far as Polokwane took to the water to record their first official times for the coming season. Even though a short course pool offers a slight advantage to shave off splits from a swimmer’s time (given the push off the wall for the return leg), the times are still a good indication of where improvement is needed. The TASK swimmers all did very well with Liné Brits (12) recording four second places in the 50m breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle and butterfly events, and a first place in the 100m freestyle race. The 11-year old TASKer, Milan Ferreira, lined up a third place in the 50m backstroke, and three second places in the 100m freestyle, 50m fly and 200m Individual Medley (IM) events. Larike Joubert (15) made a clean break in her events scoring gold in the 50m breast, 50m free, 100m breast, 100m free and the 200m IM respectively. Teammate Cianke Louw (13) finished third in the 100m back, 50m free and 200m IM events before raking in a second spot in the 50m back and a fourth in the 100m free. Miane Van Veelen (10) took second place in the 100m breast and fourth in the 200m IM while Chris Grobler (11) mirrored these results with a second in the 50m back and fourth in the 100m free with his teammate, Conrad Venter (11), managing a fourth spot in the 50m back and the 100m breast. The two swimmers who competed in last season’s junior nationals, Juan Meintjies (15) and Ronan Theron (18) both placed well in their events. Meintjies touched the wall first in the 50m back, 50m fly and 50m free with a third spot in the 100m fly. Theron cleaned house with first places in the 100m fly and back events, and first spot in

the 50m back and fly as well as the 200m IM. He also recorded a sub-minute for the 100m fly event touching the wall in 59,79 seconds. Armand Theron (12) and Markus Theron (16) both recorded good finishes with Armand taking first in the 50m back, second in the 100m back and third in the 50m breast and freestyle events. Markus touched third in the 50m breast and fourth in the 50m free and backstroke events. The Shamu Swimmers held their own as usual, and all of them recorded good results on the day. NJ Pohl (11) and his 12-year old teammate, Dario Wasley took first spots in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events. Jason Loucao (15) took first in the 100m back, 100m breast, 200m back, 400m free, second in the 100m fly, 100m free, and second in the 200m IM. Daniel Smit (18) took second in the 200m back, third in the 100m free and second in the 200m IM events while Ella Janse van Rensburg (11) took first in the 50m back, third in the 100m free and fourth in the 200m IM. Theuns is built Letsitele-tough ■ Roelof de Jonge

The fourth round of the WOMZA National Rally Championship, the NTT Motor Group Tzaneen Rally, took place in Tzaneen on the 3rd and 4th of September. It was a toughy, but in the end Theuns Joubert from Letsitele, proved tougher and clinched victory with his navigator, Schalk van Heerden, in their Class A Toyota Yaris S2000. “We thoroughly enjoyed this rally. It surely counts as one of the best in the country. The stages were challenging, but we must compliment the organizers who hosted a great event. Not to mention the community and businesses from Tzaneen who all came out in support to host this rally,” said Joubert. “I would surely punt the Tzaneen Rally for national championship status. The dam stage especially, is one of the best rally stages in the country, not to mention the adrenaline pumping Agatha mine shaft section where you literally go barreling down a mine shaft!” Joubert and van Heerden set the pace from the word go, and never surrendered the lead over the two days that followed, recording a second place finish only in the third stage. The entire event consisted of 11 stages with one of the most exciting for the spectators being the infamous tarred stage on Saturday in Claude Wheately Street. The grey Yaris eventually finished 14 minutes and 20 seconds ahead of second placed Kenneth and Kemaine Venter in a Class C Toyota Tazz who had to push peddle to the metal to keep a hard charging Vladimir Sibirko and Danie Rossouw in their Class A Subaru Impreza at bay. The difference between second and third place was eventually a mere 11 seconds. Joubert was not the only local competing in the NTT Motor Group Tzaneen Rally. Well-known Tzaneen businessman, Eddie Simpson, dusted of his

racing gear to enter for this rally in his Opel Corsa. Simpson teamed up for a once-off partnership with navigator Louis Menge, who is also a local Tzaneen resident, to compete in Class D. With three stages to go of the rally, the Simpson Motors Corsa was damaged irreparably following an altercation with a tree stump which subsequently finish any aspirations to finish in their home race. “It was so disappointing to retire from the rally due to damage to the car. I have hit a tree stump along the route which I did not notice. Initially we thought it was only the belly of the car that was a bit dented. But after closer inspection we noticed the dented belly of the car pressed against the oil sump which caused a leakage. There was no time to fix it and there was no way to complete the rest of the rally with an oil leak,” explained Simpson. “I was one of the persons who encouraged other rally teams to come and enter for this event. From the feedback I have received after the rally, everyone who raced are more than keen to return next year. Hats off specifically to Merensky Forestry and the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) who were willing to scrape the roads ahead of time for the stages to be run on their properties,” Simpson added. The third team from Tzaneen who drove cautiously to finish the rally in one piece is the husband-and-wife team, Peter and Mavis Pilusa, in their trustworthy Class D Nissan Sentra. The Pilusa’s guided their car to 17th place overall. The rally crews will now set their eyes on the 5th round which is the All-Tar Rally in Gauteng which is set to take place in October, the date has yet to be announced.

Peter and Mavis Pilusa from Tzaneen in their Class D Nissan Sentra drove steadily to see the finish point.
