A little late, but the contract for the controversial shacks erected at R64 000 a piece in Tzaneen’s Talana Hostel, has finally been declared fraudulent. This after Premier Stan Mathabatha praised the erection of these shacks with great pomp and ceremony, and many smiley portraits at the ribbon cutting ceremony. Mathabatha even boasted that this was a “multi-million housing project”. The hostel dwellers at Talana will now finally sigh with relief after their concerns about the poor state of the corrugated iron makeshift shacks were vindicated. This after the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) revealed that the tender for the construction of the shacks was fraudulently obtained. It also applied to the courts to have the service contractor, Aventico, blacklisted. When the Covid-19 pandemic emerged in March last year the government announced that the homeless people and street kids should be removed from the streets and be provided with temporary accommodation while long term measures were coming. In the meantime the Department of Human Settlements in partnership with the Housing Development Agency (HDA), built shacks at Talana hostel. Long before the project’s completion, uproar from the community brought it under the spotlight. The

The ruling ANC finally conceded that there were many disputes in several provinces with regards to the list of candidates that were submitted to the Independent Electoral commission (IEC) before the closing date two weeks ago. However, they assured voters that they had given provinces deadlines to solve these problems through following appropriate processes. All provincial leaders were summoned to Luthuli House to report on these disputes in their provinces. This was met by hundreds of party members from various parts of the country including Tzaneen who protested in front of the offices of the party demanding that councillors they had chosen, be registered with the IEC. In Tzaneen, protests started at the regional office of the party in Medi Park where party faithfuls from all the subregions of the of Mopani demanded the resignation of all regional office bearers. They accused them of altering the names of people chosen by their communities to be

This was after Hlokomela, an award-winning HIV and AIDS educational and treatment programme targeting workers, including foreign migrants, in the agriculture, nature conservation, and tourism sectors in The Greater Kruger to Canyon area facilitated one of these outreach initiatives. These initiatives are meant to cater for the thousands of farm workers around the Hoedspruit area who cannot travel to healthcare facilities.

In partnership with the Limpopo Department of Health, and the Sekororo Hospital, the outreach team reportedly administered a combined 749 vaccinations for the day and took the total tally of Hlokomela facilitated vaccinations to 5 000. “We are extremely thankful for the support we’ve received from our partners, farmers, local business and community members in general. A massive thank you goes out again to all the volunteers, the Hlokomela Nompilos, and the Sekororo outreach team. Your commitment and efforts are an inspiration, and we could not do this without you,” said the Hlokomela team in a statement.

Apart from the agricultural sector, last week also saw many members from the tourism and hospitality industry utilizing the vaccination day. Refugees, migrant workers, foreigners, and even a group of sex workers from Hlokomela’s NACOSA Sex Worker programme, all got vaccinated.

■ Billy Sibuyi Having to choose whether to vote, or whether to write a final examination, is apparently a predicament facing many matriculants this year. The Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, announced that the start of the National Senior Certificate exams will fall on the 1st of November, the same date as the local elections. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on Motshekga, and her department to review the matric examination timetable to accommodate the upcoming Local Government Elections where residents can vote for their new municipal councilors. According to the DA this clash gives rise to several challenges for both matric learners, exam writing centres, as well as the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). “The first concern is that some matric pupils, who are eligible to vote, may be unable to do so. Secondly, if the start of the examinations is not postponed, the IEC, which often use school halls as voting stations on Election Day, may face challenges in this regard. And lastly, given that Election Day is declared as a public holiday, this creates further difficulties around teachers and invigilators exercising their democratic right to vote,” stated the DA. “The DA strongly encourages the Department of Basic Education to alter the matric exam schedule to accommodate both matric students and the elections. This will ensure that both the exams and the voting process proceed without a hitch”.

councillors and replacing them with their cronies. However, the officials locked themselves inside the building. Protestors were bussed in from the Greater Letaba Municipality, Ba-Phalaborwa, Giyani and Tzaneen and they demanded that the list of proportional councillors be reviewed as they were not approved by the communities. They also threatened to vote for other political parties if the names were not revoked by the ANC before the elections. “We as the residents of South Africa and supporters of the ruling ANC want the names of the councillors who were not chosen by the communities to be removed and the process be restarted as these cronies held meetings alone and chose themselves.” Party spokesperson, Pule Mabe, said that the party concedes that there are problems with the names of candidates that were submitted to Luthuli House. He said that they had given the provinces until Tuesday to resolve their disputes. He said on Wednesday leaders of provinces were summoned by the National Executive Committee (NEC) to give reports.

SIU spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, said that investigations revealed that Aventico obtained the contract to construct the shacks illegally. He said the service provider misrepresented and forged documents with no link to the company to influence the bid. Kganyago said they have applied to the High Court to recover money used for the project totalling R15 million.

The Lushof gunmen’s reign of terror continues

■ Joe Dreyer

It’s all-out war in the Lushof area just outside Tzaneen. Allegedly more than 40 cases of armed robbery and assault have been reported since the start of the year and to date, nothing has been done to stop those responsible. This even though authorities allegedly know the gang is armed with high powered rifles and have linked them to crimes in Magoebaskloof, Lushof and Haenertsburg. It is reported that even the make and model of the bakkie they use as transport is commonly known. The final tipping point for Lushof inhabitants came this week when yet another property was burgled, and one of its inhabitants assaulted. “We are tired of living in fear and the police are doing nothing. From now on, this will change.” Mark and Fleurette Andrew were sound asleep in their home on a plot in Lushof South on Monday evening. At around midnight after Fleurette had woken up to fetch a glass of water, Mark was awoken by a strange sound coming from somewhere on his property. At first he dismissed it, but when his wife came back into the room and said she heard strange scratching noises, they both sat up to listen. “About 20 minutes or so later I heard the noises again. It sounded like scratching; or a clicking sound. My wife thought it may be the dog so I looked out the window to see if I could spot anything. I saw nothing and looked especially into the area where our solar panels are mounted which is about 30 metres from the house and I still could see nothing,” explained Mark. “That’s when I heard the most horrific screams. Basie! Basie! Basie!” It was the couple’s live-in housekeeper who has her flatlet a few metres from the main house. She was running across the lawn and likely from pure adrenalin, broke right through the kitchen door and was now pulling at the Trellidoor safety gate begging Mark to open and let her in. “My wife and I ran to the kitchen and pulled our housekeeper inside and slammed the safety gate shut again. They’re coming for me! She shouted hysterically, they’re coming for me! Fleurette consoled her while I ran back to the bedroom, grabbed my firearm and jumped on the radio shouting that we needed help and that those armed intrud-

ers were on my property.” A week prior to this morning, the perimeter fences bordering the Andrew’s plot and their neighbours’ was cut and they had picked up tracks of a group of people who had passed through their property. This led to a safety meeting that following Thursday evening where every resident of Lushof South attended and discussed emergency measures. Mark chaired that meeting. “I heard the noises and saw some movement close to the window so I fired four warning shots into that direction, but everything was quiet so I switched on all our extra spotlights which lit up the entire property like daylight. Still, I heard the noises but saw nothing. A neighbour had immediately responded to my call and coordinated the rest of the area’s security groups so I knew backup would be arriving shortly. Time kind of stands still when you’re in this type of situation.” The housekeeper said that she was asleep and awoken by strange clicking sounds. When she unlocked her phone to check the time, two men broke through her window and jumped into her bedroom. One of the suspects held a gun to her head and demanded she should remain silent. The housekeeper however reacted in shock and hit the gun out of the intruder’s hand and sprinted out of her flatlet towards the main house screaming at the top of her lungs to alert her employers. The two suspects chased after her and were mere metres from her when she reached the kitchen door. “In less than 10 minutes about eight vehicles arrived at my house. My neighbour had spread my mayday message on our local WhatsApp security group which is linked to all the security companies’ control rooms. This was when I went outside to meet them.” A perimeter was set up and a search was immediately launched. Craig Coppen arrived on scene with his tracking dogs which instantly picked up the scent and a large pose set off into the darkness after the suspects. Mark and one of the security officers inspected the solar panel area and found that all 16 panels had been stolen. The clicking sounds they had heard, were caused by a bolt cutter used to sever the hinges attaching the panels to the support structures. “Each of those panels measured around 2m x 1.2m and there were

N1 spike gang arrested ■ Jeff Jackson Four suspects, Brighton Chauke (51), Paul Mudzingwa (47), Tshepiso Relela (32) and Percy Chauke (32), appeared in Mokopane Magistrate’s court on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of firearms and ammunition and contravention of the Immigration Act. These four suspects were arrested by a team comprising of Mokopane Crime Prevention, Modimolle Dog Unit, Mokopane CIG, Detectives, Lim-

popo Tracking Team, Limpopo Provincial Investigation Unit and Heritage Protection Group for their alleged involvement in the spate of robberies along the N1 and R101 routes. An escalation of robberies taking place along these roads, in which criminals targeted motorists by placing spikes in strategic locations on these roads and then robbing them after the drivers stop to change the punctured tyres, has had the province’s motorists in a state of fear. The suspects were tracked and found in possession of spikes carried in a bag, firearms and ammunition, a vehicle sponsored by the department of social development, a 303 rifle with sound suppressor, a police reflector jacket, cellphones, watches, router, and a laptop. Two of the suspects were arrested this week in Mabopane outside Pretoria. One was found to be an undocumented foreign national and the other is a volunteer at the victim support centre at Rietgat SAPS. The other two were arrested on Monday the 6th of September, with more arrests expected. The suspects were remanded in custody until the 17th of September 2021 for further police investigations.

Don’t miss the next one!

16 of them which told us that the suspects were at least a group of 10 guys. The spotlight I had installed to light up the panel area was smashed and turned into the opposite direction completely. My fence was cut as well and this time the hole in the perimeter was so big, one of the security guards asked me where the road led to, as he thought it was an entrance gate.” As the tracker dogs did their best to stay on the suspects’ trail, the rest of the community was alerting members on the WhatsApp group whenever they spotted or heard movement on their properties. Suddenly gunshots echoed through the valley as the pursuing group had cornered the suspects in a tributary of the Letaba River between the Martin Dale Seedlings turnoff and the Elro Transport turnoff. There was a firefight which resulted in two of the tracker dogs receiving minor graze wounds presumably from shotgun pellets, and one of the security companies’ vehicles was penetrated by two rounds from a high-powered rifle. The suspects dropped their loot and ran up the steep embankment. A six-hour long chase ensued which saw the suspects flee over the R71 into Lushof North where they were cornered and eventually snuck around and over the hilltop past the big cross and down to Die Stoep where they seemed to have tried to sneak into Addington. With every member on high alert and all access routes blocked off, they doubled back over the hill into Lushof North and eventually disappeared on the Bali Farm where their tracks just stopped abruptly. “Now, I am going to have to fork out a few thousand Rands to repair the damage to my solar panels, the damage to my fence and replace the spotlight. Not to mention the emotional trauma our housekeeper and even ourselves have had to deal with. Then I will need to install more beams, upgrade the alarm system etcetera. The worst is that we know that tomorrow night these guys will be back – either at our house, or at one of our neighbours.” At the time of going to print, there have been no arrests. Statements were taken from the victims, fingerprints were lifted, and a case of assault GBH and armed robbery is being investigated.

20 Tons of rubble removed

Not just a guy, a Guru

■ Billy Sibuyi The Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation (PNHF) set out on a major clean-up project in Phalaborwa on Tuesday, 14th of September, as part of the clean up week held in September. The project was launched after SANParks approached the foundation and requested their assistance. Community members rolled up their sleeves and hit the bush behind Spar leading to the cemetery, and the bush around Bollanoto Tourism Centre leading to the airport, two of the most affected areas by illegal dumping. The cleanup operation was attended by many members of the community, SANParks, Working for Water, PNHF volunteers, and members of the EPWP from the municipality who (not surprisingly) spent the entire duration of the clean-up sitting under the

shade at Bollanoto, eating. It came as no surprise to see these workers who were brought in by ward councilor Jane Williamson, sitting back and watching everybody do the work. When asked why they were not cleaning up, they simply said that “we are hungry give us food and we will work”. Waste, from bottles to used condoms, and fresh feces-encrusted tissue paper were among the most disgusting things volunteers had to clean-up. “We removed around 20 tons of building rubble illegally dumped in the bush and picked up, sorted, and removed two skips filled with rubbish,” said Eugene Troskie. “We’ve only scratched the surface, but we already made a difference and will continue to do so. The cleanup action was done during SA’s national cleanup and recycling week running from the 13th to the 19th of September.”

■ Joe Dreyer You need someone to fix the tv which keeps switching on and off at the crucial moments in your favourite series. So, you head over to Facebook and join the statistics of bad service advice from someone named Steve who tagged someone else named Bob who kinda sorta knows a thing or two about soldering. Social media is the bane of every household appliance emergency. Well, gone are those days of anti-climatical disappointment, because now you too can gloat that you “know a guy” as you whip out your phone and dial the Electronics Guru conveniently saved on speed dial. Just because. Anita Lordan and her team have made a name for themselves as the gurus in electronic appliances as is evident by their gutsy launch in June last year as the country reeled from the threemonth long hard lockdown that ravished the economy. Initially they focused on television sets which were hard hit during quarantine given that an entire region was on house arrest – and well Netflix and chill became a thing. But now, the Electronics Guru has a bit of a reputation for reviving any electronics device from fridges, washing machines, dishwashers, television sets, hi-fi systems and even that toaster that died six weeks ago and you haven’t replaced yet. After the successful resuscitation of half the

town’s beloved electrical lifesavers, the need arose for a service, parts and repairs centre. The Electronics Guru opened the doors to the first of it’s planned three branches, at 16 Park Street, close to Sugarloaf. The other three currently in the pipeline are planned for Lenondokop in Mooketsi, Giyani and Hoedspruit. There’s a bonus as well, pensioners will always get a lekker 10% discount and if you refer your friends to the Electronic Guru, you get a referral bonus. So next time you gather round the braai, do yourself a favour and name drop like the influential person you truly are. “Obviously we are very dedicated to our trade and our returning clients bear testament to this. And no, they don’t return to have the same item repaired after their first visit, they bring in their appliances that need regular maintenance. If we fixed your appliance, it is fixed for good. That’s a promise. Should anybody not be happy with our service or workmanship, please contact me personally as I prefer to deal with queries personally and immediately. That’s how customer service should work, at least that’s what I expect from my service providers,” said Anita most assuredly with a confident smile. Did we mention that they also install DSTV and Openview systems? In case we missed any of the impressive list of services they offer, give them a call on 064 656 4585 or 079 697 1051, or check out the Electronics Guru Facebook page.

Fun and excitement rules at BB Open Day

■ Roelof de Jonge

On Saturday the 11th of September, the branches of the BB Motor Group in Tzaneen held an Open Day for its existing and prospective customers at Zabana just outside of town. Clients were treated with test drives from the latest vehicles from the ranges across it’s entire dealership stable including BB Nissan, BB Ford, BB Mahindra, BB Mazda, BB Suzuki, BB Datsun, BB Renault, BB Biac, BB UD Trucks and BB FAW Trucks. The new generation Nissan Navara and new Mazda BT-50 bakkies caught the eye, albeit the desirable and sports performance orientated Nissan GTR nearly stole the whole of the limelight. Another eye catcher was the new pre-

mium class Nissan Patrol Wagon while the BB Mahindra branch, presented their nostalgia inducing Thar 4x4 with its iconic Willis Jeep looks. After the test drives the BB dealership personnel welcomed the guests at Zabana’s lapa for a mouthwatering lunch. Each one of the dealership teams were tasked with setting up a table with cutlery and placings for their guests, on which they would be judged by an esteemed panel of culinary experts including the Bulletin team. The tables were judged on presentation and overall creativity with BB Mahindra eventually taking the top honours for their stylish approach. In a very close second was BB Ford with BB Suzuki rounding of the podium in third position.

The table of BB Mahindra Tzaneen was judged as the winner for the best prepared table of all the BB Motor Group branches.

The Mahindra Thar 4x4 was faultless during a couple of test drives from guests.

The newly introduced Nissan Navara range from BB Nissan Tzaneen was one of the highlights.

This unique decoration from BB Ford Tzaneen landed them the second place for the best decorated table.

The setting of the table from the BB Suzuki Tzaneen was also an eye catcher which earned them third place overall for the best decorated table.

Nico Wolmarans, sales manager at BB Suzuki Tzaneen, is busy to help prepare some braai chicken for him and his colleagues.

IN THE CHAIR WITH DR RUAN RADEMEYER

Dental Cavity What happens if a Dental Cavity is left untreated?

As mentioned in our previous article, cavities in their early phase of formation are mostly asymptomatic and if detected at this stage, easily repaired with a small conservative filling or restoration. Today we will discuss what happens if cavities are left untreated. Untreated cavities can spread and destroy more and more tooth structure, eventually exposing the Dental Pulp (the inner part of the tooth that contains blood vessels and nerves of the tooth). This will cause infection of the Pulp and tooth abscess formation. Bacteria can enter the pulp through a cavity, a chip or a crack in the tooth. The bacteria destroy the pulp and can cause swelling and inflammation at the tip of the root. More extensive dental work will be required to save the tooth. The symptoms can be severe and can be unbearable to the patient. Signs and symptoms of a tooth abscess include: • Severe throbbing toothache that can spread to the jawbone, neck or ear. • Hot and cold sensitivity. • Pressure sensitivity on the affected tooth.

• • • •

Fever. Swelling in the face and cheek. Swollen and tender lymph nodes. Difficulty swallowing or breathing.

An abscess will not go away without treatment. If the abscess ruptures, the pain may decrease significantly, but you will still need dental treatment. If left untreated, the infection may spread to other parts of the head and neck causing further complications. It is also important to note that antibiotics only play a partial role in the treatment of a dental abscess. Antibiotics will decrease swelling and improve the symptoms of the patient, but if the tooth is left untreated the infection will recur and often the symptoms will be worse and more difficult to treat. A dental abscess is diagnosed primarily by clinical symptoms (pain to percussion, hot and cold sensitivity, swelling etc.) and then our initial diagnosis confirmed with an x-ray. Treatment of a dental abscess is based on the severity of the infection and the amount of destruction on the tooth. The following may be needed: • A Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic like Penicillin may be prescribed if there is severe swelling in the area of the abscess. • The swelling may be drained by making a small incision along the lower margin of the abscess if the

swelling is extensive. • If the tooth has extensive damage the tooth needs to be extracted. • A Root Canal Procedure can be carried out if the tooth has a good chance of survival. I hope you enjoyed this insert and please look out for our next instalment. Dr Ruan Rademeyer

Lim-Baobabs get a league over ■ Roelof de Jonge

Nanique Stevens

The Limpopo Baobabs netball team gave a sterling performance during the first leg of the Telkom Netball League played between the 5th and the 12th of September. The Baobabs secured a third place to see them head into the second leg of the tourney in good standing. The next round of games will be played in Rustenburg from the 9th until the 17th of October. According to Nkowankowa City Ramblers star and vice-captain of the Baobabs, Theoner ‘Wonga’ Mthombeni, her team pulled off an exceptional performance and their future in the competition looks bright. “Well, let me tell you, a lot has changed since we competed last time round. It all starts with a well-structured management and a bunch of amazing girls who are hungry for success and have the same goal, fighting spirit and everlasting love in and off court.” The Baobabs started off their campaign against the Northern Cape Diamonds and went ahead to beat the gems by 66 to 42. The team managed a narrow victory against the Aloes from the Eastern Cape in a match that could have gone either team’s way. The Baobabs managed to secure a three-goal victory with a score of 43 to 40. Not withstanding some tough competition, the Limpopo girls clipped the wings of the Mpumalanga Sunbirds to win their third match of the tournament by 47-44 and continued Shongile Hlungwana their excellent form by beating the Kingdom Queens

from KwaZulu-Natal, with a score of 47 to 36. They would eventually suffer their first defeat against the Comets from the Eastern Cape. The final score was 57-41. The Western Cape Tornados repeated their neighbours’ performance and beat the Baobabs by 53 goals to 35. In their last encounter the Baobabs again faced the Aloes from the Eastern Cape. The Aloes brought a tougher game this time round, but the Limpopo team’s feistiness proved too much to handle and they eventually conceded 45-40. The log standings for the second division is quite a tight affair with only two points separating the top three spots after the first leg. The Tornados currently top the log standings with 12 points. In second place on 10 points is the team from the Eastern Cape Aloes with Limpopo in third place also on 10 points. The other four remaining teams in the second division are a further four points adrift in the standings, and taken the form of the top three teams, it would take a mammoth effort to catch up with the top three contestants.
