The young hippo bull which roamed the streets of Phalaborwa for more than a few weeks was successfully darted and relocated on Tuesday evening, the 12th of October, by volunteers of the Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation (PNHF) and other members of Phalaborwa. It turned out that there was not a lot of water sources in town, apart from the municipal dam and the dams at the municipal dumping area, which were already full of hippos, so the young bull was physically forced out by a dominant male to find his own territory. So, with nowhere to go, according to Eugene Troskie of the PNHF, it ended up going into the drainage lines, and the natural green belts near people’s homes. “This was problematic as he actually chased somebody not too long ago. And this could have been dangerous for him as well because if he had attacked somebody he would have to be shot, so we did not want that.” “So, a group effort was made between the PNHF, SA Hunters and Game Conservation Association Mopani Branch, and Ledet,” said Troskie. “The plan was to dart, immobilize, and move him to the Olifants River where he would be in an open system
where he can go freely into the Kruger, the property of PMC, Klasierie, or even the water board.” The young hippo was darted on Tuesday evening at Troupand Street, and he went down on a resident’s driveway. Troskie explained that it was quite easy to dart the hippo as it was already used to vehicles, so they drove near it and darted it. It was reported to have been badly wounded, possibly from the forced eviction by his father at the municipal dam. “We want to extend a thank you to Bianca Liebenberg, Mark Surman and Sasha Bornman from PMC, Rufus and Sonet Louw, André Prinsloo, Dirk de Klerk from Ledet, Dr Gerrit Scheepers from Phalaborwa animal and bird clinic who darted the hippo, Gavin Meridith

A pride of lions which had wandered out of their restrictive area were safely darted and relocated back into the Kruger National Park on Sunday evening, the 10th of October. The lions were spotted wandering around Riverside Farm living quarters, a property adjacent to the KNP, along the Crocodile River, by a staff member. The farm workers informed the Malelane Section Ranger, who immediately lifted off in his light sport aircraft and flew over the farm to try and locate the animals. A helicopter was also dispatched. That Sunday at least eight lions were located. “In a joint effort from Rangers, Vet-

erinary Wildlife Services, State Veterinary Department and Riverside Farm, the animals were lured onto a bait shortly after sunset, in order to be safely immobilized and returned to the Park,” stated KNP. “Ten animals were darted, loaded, and safely transported back into KNP. A word of appreciation to everyone involved and to Riverside for assisting with the operation from start to finish. The fast reaction from all involved led to a very successful operation,” it stated. Isaac Phaahla, spokesperson for the KNP, told Bulletin that out of the 10 lions only two were males and eight were females as they were wandering around the sugar cane farm.

Another accident in KNP ■ Billy Sibuyi
Park revelers have urged the Kruger National Park to up their road safety standards as more people seem to ignore its speed limits. This after SANParks released yet another statement again urging visitors to follow the speed limits when traveling through their parks. Not so long ago a SANParks employee died in the park, a day visitor hit an endangered animal, and in both cases which were in the northern region, speeding was ruled as the likely cause. In the latest statement the KNP reported that there was a vehicle accident on Hardekool Draai between Letaba and Olifants camps on Friday, the 8th of October. They reported that a red sedan with one male passenger rolled over and crashed into trees. The driver had entered through Orpen Gate earlier that morning and was
travelling to Mopani Rest Camp. “He was travelling from South to North and there were no brake marks where the accident occurred, it looks like he went straight at the sharp corner and could not regain control of the vehicle. He had a lot of belongings in the car which are being kept safe at Letaba Rest Camp,” stated KNP in a statement. This is not the first time a person has been involved in an accident on the same stretch of road as in 2019 a Swiss tourist died after an alleged speeding taxi hit a giraffe and it landed on another vehicle, killing the driver. Also, earlier this year another vehicle was involved in accident on the same road. The speed limits in the Kruger Park are no higher than 50km/h on tarred roads according to the SANParks permit offered upon entry into the park, so one should know of this.

New development at Falconwood raises eyebrows ■ Joe Dreyer

There has been a lot of speculation among residents of Tzaneen over the earth works currently noticeable on the side of the R71 near the twin bridges. The site in question is the old Falconwood Beverages bottling plant which was purchased by local businessman Faheem Goolam-Mohamed of Letaba Milling. Locals noticed earthworks taking place and soon speculations on the intended development were birthed. Owners of the surrounding waterfront properties raised concern that a new industrial milling site will soon be erected and would adversely affect the environment and the surrounding property values. Bulletin spoke to Faheem this week and he assured the public that whatever plans he has for the development will be within the confines of the law. “At this stage we don’t have any plans set in stone for the property, other than continuing and expanding the existing bottling operation. We are still in talks with the Department of Environmental Affairs and the town planner. What we have done in the meantime is started preparing the ground for whatever expansion we might decide on, whether it be a warehouse or storage, we haven’t decided yet.” Faheem also stated that they are busy with an environmental impact study and the relevant processes will be followed before any construction commences. “We understand the community’s concerns and seeing as how we have been a part of this community for many years, we are sensitive to the impact that any major development could have on the natural environment. We can assure you that nothing untoward is taking place there.” A few years ago plans were discussed for a waterfront development on the opposite side of the R71, but at the time of going to print, we had not been able to ascertain the exact reasons for that development not seeing the light.
ANC’s disregarding Jetty 3 tents for of bylaws is punished Fatherhood Walk
■ Joe Dreyer
On Wednesday, the 14th of October, the Greater Tzaneen Municipality removed the massive illegal billboard which hung on the railing of the Adshade bridge over the R71 provincial road. The massive signboard was erected illegally by an internet service provider approximately a year ago. It was removed by the GTM a short while later because the company did not follow the bylaws and the structure was deemed unsafe and thus illegal. This week the ruling ANC decided to wrap a massive banner over the heavy steel frame as part of their electioneering campaign. What the ANC discovered however, is that none are above the law regardless of the arrogance with which conducts
one’s business. The GTM’s traffic department headed by André Liversage moved in on the signboard at 09:00 that morning and cut off the vinyl wrapping, leaving only the large steel skeleton hanging off the bridge rails. The Traffic Department were not permitted to remove the structure and thus, the engineering department will remove it sometime in this week. The Greater Municipality’s acting municipal manager, Alec Nkuna, gave the order for the removal of the signboard and other illegally erected outdoor advertising. What he is planning on doing to solve the illegal hawker issue remains to be seen. Watch the full video of the signboard’s removal on our Facebook page at Far North Bulletin.

Irony in one image. The ANC illegally erected a massive billboard right above the site of illegal street hawkers living in absolute poverty.
The tents that residents of Aquapark noticed being erected at Jetty 3 is not another quarantine facility or temporary shelter as was the case last year. It is in fact accommodation for the participants of the annual 100km Walk for Fatherhood event which was started in 2017 by local athlete, Nyiko Masango, to raise awareness for fathers who were denied the right to see their children after a divorce. The event will take place tomorrow and was granted permission by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s acting municipal manager, Alec Nkuna. We tried in vain to obtain information from the spokesperson for the municipality. We wanted to know why the Jetty can be used to house so many participants while it remains off limits to the
taxpaying local public despite the adjusted level 1 Covid regulations. We also wanted to know if a liquor license was issued for the event considering the existing liquor license for the Jetty 3 site is in the ownership of local businessman Muis Joubert. He has confirmed that there have been no exceptions or extensions to this license. The rules certainly do count for only a select minority of the citizenry who cannot enjoy the scenic Tzaneen Dam as the municipality alleged that it does not have enough manpower to open the facilities. This despite a group of businessmen including Joubert, presenting a proposal to take over management of the site at their own costs. If the GTM truly does not posses the manpower to adequately run the site, who will be enforcing covid protocols and other safety measures this weekend?

DA wants better service delivery
■ Roelof de Jonge
On Saturday the 9th of October the residents of Ward 14, regarded as the largest in Tzaneen, were greeted by Democratic Alliance (DA) ward councilor candidates, members and staff campaigning for the upcoming local municipality elections. The core of this DA campaign as it is highlighted in its national mandate, is to solve the current electricity crises that would end loadshedding, to improve service delivery and to eradicate crime which affects South Africa’s economy negatively. René Pohl, ward candidate for the DA in Ward 14, was satisfied how this campaign has progressed. She was joined by ward candidates from across the municipality. “Electricity, water supply and the maintenance of roads are three vital issues for us as the DA. Without these there is not a single economy that will prosper, and no business would invest in an area with constant electricity problems, shortage of water supply and poor service delivery like the regular maintenance of road infrastructure,” she said. “We would like to grow in the direction of our DA municipalities in the Western Cape which receive clean audits continuously. For the DA is it
important to be visible in your community and for residents to be able to reach out to their respective ward councilors. We as the DA would like to ensure that residents are able to trust ward councilors to report their issues to the local municipal and district municipal council.” Former DA staff member who is now a DA activist and candidate for
the Mopani District, Lebbeus Ramalepe, was also present at the campaign on Saturday. “For us as the DA is it important to gain the trust of the community, to be a party that gets things done the right way, and to ensure Tzaneen retains its Blue Drop Status. We are going to intensify our campaign to ensure voters come out on election day to cast their vote.”
CAD-CAM Dentistry
■
What is CAD-CAM Dentistry?
Gone are the days of waiting two weeks to have your crown fitted with the latest in dentistry technology available to you right here in Tzaneen. Introducing the CAD-CAM system. CAD-CAM is an acronym for Computer-Assisted Design – Computer-Assisted Manufacture of Dental Crowns, Inlays, Bridges etc. There are several systems on the market but in our practice, we make use of Sirona’s Cerec Omnicam system. CAD-CAM is one of the fastest developing fields in Dentistry and allows us to manufacture Dental Crowns and Inlays in a single visit to the practice. The crowns are more accurate and efficient than traditional Laboratory manufactured crowns and reduces time spent in the dental chair. Traditionally the steps involved in preparation and manufacture of a Laboratory crown would consist of two appointments, 7 to 14 days apart depending on the turnover of the Laboratory. The first appointment is usually a 60-minute appointment, during which the tooth would be prepared to receive the crown. Once the preparation is done, the Dentist will take an impression of the prepared tooth as well as the opposing dental arch. The next step would be to manufacture a temporary crown that will protect the prepared tooth. The second appointment is a
Step 1 Case Selection 30-minute appointment during which the dentist will remove the temporary crown, fit the crown and if all is well cement the crown permanently. With the Cerec Omnicam the whole process can be completed in a single 90-minute visit. The process starts by preparing the tooth to receive the crown. Next the preparation is scanned using the Cerec Omnicam Acquisition unit. No impressions are necessary. The Dentist can now design the new crown on the Acquistion unit’s software program. Once the design is complete, the Acquisition unit communicates with the milling unit where the crown is cut from a porcelain block. The crown can now be polished and fitted in the patient’s mouth and cemented in position. What are the benefits of a Cerec CAD-CAM crown? • Allows for same-day restorations. • Crowns are very aesthetic, long lasting and free of metal. • No need for temporary crowns and uncomfortable impressions.
Step 2 Scanning
Step 3 Crown design
Step 5 Block in Milling Unit
Step 4 Block Selection for Milling Unit
Step 6 Crystallizing and Glazing
• The colour of the crown can be matched to the adjacent teeth. • 3D images from the acquisition unit are more accurate than impressions, leading to a better fitting crown that will maintain a better seal along the cement margin, increasing the longevity of the crown. When am I a good candidate for a Cerec CADCAM crown?
Step 7 Finished Crown
• You have fractured a tooth with severe loss of tooth structure. • You need a new crown or onlay. • You want to replace old metal restorations with more aesthetic porcelain restorations. • You have a tooth that requires a large restoration • You want to improve your appearance with a Smile Design or complete dental makeover Dr Ruan Rademeyer
