Dismissed Mpumalanga Agriculture MEC and murder accused, Mandla Msibi, and two of his co-accused have been released on a R20 000 bail each in their murder and attempted murder case on Tuesday, 19th of October. This also comes after the police opened a case of criminal threat after they received a phone call of a bomb planted in the courthouse during the second appearance of the much-anticipated criminal case of Mandla Msibi. The bail hearing of the former Mpumalanga Agriculture MEC accused of murder, was expected to be heard last week Wednesday, but it came to a dramatic end on that afternoon after the magistrate received a message notifying her of a bomb in the building. The case which is expected to feature a lot of twists and plots was only appearing for the second day, and nine minutes into the testimony of the investigating officer, the magistrate, Magistrate Susan Monaledi, walked out and when she resumed, she told everybody to evacuate the building. The police spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Colonel Leonard Mdhluli, told Bulletin that a bomb squad was dispatched to authenticate the bomb threat which had the public in an uproar with some supporters of Msibi believing that it was a delaying ploy by the National Prosecuting Authority. “Our teams have scanned the court thoroughly and gone into every office and space and they did not find a bomb, that is why we are going to be investigating this case of threat,” the Colonel told Bulletin. Msibi, who is currently out on bail, is being charged with murder and attempted murder alongside four others after it emerged that he was involved in an incident in which two men were shot dead and a

third one wounded in Mpumalanga. Mpumalanga has been described as ‘notorious for political assassinations’ and plausibly that is the motive one of the ward councilors in Mpumalanga, which Bulletin is in contact with, believes the attack which Msibi, a man described as the ‘unifier’ of the ANC, is being accused of, was initially meant for him. In terms of their bail conditions, they must surrender their passports, refrain from leaving Mpumalanga without informing the investigating officer, and report to a police station on Mondays and Fridays. Msibi and his co-accused, Anele Sonke Mnisi and Njabulo Mkhonto, a former student president at the University of Limpopo, handed themselves over to the police earlier this month in connection to the murder of Dingaan Ngwenya and Sindela Lubisi who were shot dead on 22 August 2021 in Mpumalanga. The other co-accused in the case, Joseph Charlie

Ngwenya and Tshepo Matsane, were previously released on R20 000 bail. Shortly after his arrest, Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane dismissed him, and he claims her office was behind his arrest. Addressing his supporters after being granted bail by the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court, Msibi claimed that the office of the premier, as well as three female MEC’s and one male MEC, have been abusing their state power. He claims that the ANC Mpumalanga acting spokesperson, Lindiwe Ntshalintshali and himself, are victims of persecution for voicing different opinions. He also said that over ten people had been killed in Barberton after the election list was revealed and police had done nothing about it. All the accused are expected to appear in court again on 6 December.

Four more rhino poachers were arrested inside the Kruger National Park (KNP) over this past weekend. Members of the Ranger Corps, assisted by the K9 Unit, and the Airwing effected the arrests at the Stolznek section of the park, the same place where a ranger went missing last year. According to a report from SANParks, in the first incident which occurred on Friday, the 15th of October, Rangers were following up on a track when they startled a group of suspected poachers who were sitting under a tree, and they tried to flee. However, the Rangers quickly rounded up and successfully apprehended them. A high calibre hunting rifle, ammunition and poaching equipment were seized at the scene. The second incident

took place the following day as Rangers followed up gunshots they heard and stumbled upon two suspected poachers. It was reported that one of the suspects who was armed with a hunting rifle, was fatally wounded by the Rangers whilst the second managed to evade arrest. “A backpack with two rhino horns was recovered next to the body of the suspect as well as a high calibre rifle and poaching equipment. The carcass of a male black rhino was found nearby, indicating that the horns were hacked from this animal,” said Ike Phaahla, the spokesperson for SANParks. These latest arrests brings the total of rhino poachers arrested to 25 since July this year, eight more than last year during the same period. There has also been an increase of 85.7% in the number of poacher firearms recovered, 13, compared to the

seven for the same period in 2020. In an unrelated matter, the Skukuza Regional Court sentenced Simon Lubisi to an effective 19 years in custody for killing and dehorning a rhino. Lubisi was arrested in the Crocodile Bridge Section together with his three co-accused whilst busy dehorning a rhino. One suspect was fatally wounded when he shot at the Rangers during the apprehension and the three accused were apprehended and granted bail. They all absconded but fortunately Lubisi was rearrested again in the park and stood trial, resulting in the conviction, and sentencing on Thursday, 14th of October. The Managing Executive of the KNP, Gareth Coleman, congratulated the anti-poaching teams for their weekend success and the prosecuting team on the conviction and sentencing of Lubisi.

Borehole corruption Ore Handler’s death court case postponed under investigation ■ Jeff Jackson The Polokwane Commercial Crimes Court at the Mankweng magistrate court, had on Wednesday postponed the fraud and corruption case against two Limpopo businessmen accused of inflating the prices of boreholes. The charges were added to defeating the ends of justice after they tried to bribe an official of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to alter the contents of the charge sheet. Jack Maake (44) and Matome Prince Mathole (34) had their cases resumed at the Mankweng Magistrate Court after it was postponed two weeks ago when they reported that they had parted ways with their legal representatives and sought to appoint a new firm. Their case had been postponed to this coming Monday as the lawyers were to study the case. Corruption in Limpopo municipalities is rife. According to the police reports the two owners of Twincorner Construction were charging the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) about R1 million to R2 million for a borehole that was supposed to cost a mere R20 000. While the case was proceeding, the two directors summoned an official of SIU, and tried to bribe him with R300 000 to delete some of the contents of the charge sheet. According to a statement from the SIU, the two suspects sought the officer from the SIU to delete part of the report that recommended that their company be charged with corruption, and that favourable findings be made with regards to their company. It is alleged that this was made so that they would have their way in court, and they were arrested in the process of handing over the R300 000 bribe money. Spokesperson for the SIU, Kaizer Kganyago, said that the case stems from their arrest in 2019 following a tender that was issued by the district municipality to drill boreholes throughout the

region to alleviate the water crisis. Allegations of corruption regarding water reticulation in Mopani are so rife that they even attracted the attention of the national government. “Maake was arrested after the Hawks set a trap at a hotel in Polokwane when handing over a gratification of R300 000 to the SIU investigator,” said National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzangi. She added that the case had been postponed to the 25th of October. The municipality had for years been plagued by a water crisis but all efforts to alleviate the problems ended in disaster with either the contractor not completing the work, or money finished before work could be completed. Sometimes contractors are paid for doing nothing. President Cyril Ramaphosa had in 2019 called on the SIU to investigate the corruption as well as to recover the lost finances. ***Editor’s Comment: This is what happens when you favour colour and creed over qualifications and proven track records. There are numerous water drilling companies in Tzaneen alone, who could have successfully managed this project but were unsuccessful during the tendering process. It is simply not enough anymore to point out the corrupt politicians and their greedy cronies. There needs to be hefty sentences for those who make themselves guilty of misleading the public and squandering public finances. How much longer must we sit back watch as more and more of these cases come to light without the perpetrators being forced to pay back the money and spend the better portion of their remaining natural lives behind bars where they belong? There appears to be a vicious duality at play where the laws apply to only a select few who struggle to make an honest living while crooks are worshipped as heroes for riding the system bear back and smiling.

■ Billy Sibuyi A mineworker was crushed to death by a diverter car in an accident on the Palabora Copper mine premises on Saturday the 16th of October. Subsequently, an investigation was launched by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) to establish the exact cause of the tragic accident. This was the second time in the last three years that a miner lost his life on this mine following the tragedy that occurred in 2018 when five miners were burnt to death in a conveyer belt fire underground. The Department of Mineral Resources issued a notice of orders, suspension, and instructions to Palabora Copper Mine (PMC) on Tuesday evening, the 19th of October, following the incident that claimed the life of an operator, Anaph Seemela. Seemela, an re Handling Operator who was a permanent employee of PMC for 15 years, died on the mine after he was trapped between a diverter car and a handrail at approximately 18:40 at the underground transfer level. According to the mine, the accident happened without any witnesses which has lead to a full investigation. “A full investigation is being conducted by the DMRE in conjunction with the management team and organized labour to establish the possible cause”. Mining activities were suspended, and the DMRE has sent inspectors to the site, where they were joined by trade union representatives and mine management. The mine’s Senior Human Resource Manager, Dennis Modise, sent condolences to the family of the fallen Seemela and confirmed that he was trapped between the diverter car which moved between silo 1 and 2, and a handrail. In the meantime however, Bulletin has seen a document dated 19 October 2021, which contained notes by the investigating team and seemed to

reveal that the diverter car in question was not moving between the two bins as expected, and was in fact activating a fault at the control room. “Apparently the Ore Handling and Control Room operators suspected that the fault was due to obstruction made by ore along the diverter car path. It appears from this document, that this was when the Ore Handling operator, Seemela, tried cleaning the path with a water pipe when the accident happened. According to the findings in this document which Bulletin was privy to, the diverter car does not move using normal constant and designated speed. An air leak from the solenoid caused the pressure to drop below 500Kpa. The document stated that this was not reported and that the diverter car did not have a pre-start alarm installed, thus the machine moved without warning the operator. The report further claimed that the diverter car which trapped Semeela, was marked safe for use while being operated with defects, faulty movements and not tested for proper functionality. It is also reported that the mine had not given adequate training to operators for the diverter car, and that the appointed engineer had not inspected the diverter car and its safety devices when they conducted inspections. The DMRE has instructed the mine to withdraw the authorization of control room operators and responsible artisans, and to suspend the lift 1 Section contractors, plant engineers, engineers in general charge, from making Health and Safety decisions until such time that they make proper presentations to the Office of the Principle Inspector of Mines giving reasons why they should be allowed to continue making Health and Safety decisions on the mine. Bulletin has sent an enquiry to the mine and at the time of going to print we had not received any comment. This is a developing story.

Province-wide manhunt for kidnapped children

■ Jeff Jackson

Four school children were abducted in Westernburg outside Polokwane at around 07:00 on Wednesday morning. The children are brothers and range in age from 6-years-old to 15-years of age. They are all learners from Curro Heuwelkruin. Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the children aged 6, 11, 13 and 15 years, were forcefully removed from their scholar transport by a group of about seven heavily armed suspects. The 64-year-old driver of the vehicle they were traveling in, allegedly fetched the children from Nirvana and was driving along the R37 road near the N1 bypass when he was suddenly blocked by two vehicles, a white Kia Sorento and a black Mercedes Benz. A total of seven occupants from the two vehicles, dressed in white overalls alighted and started firing shots randomly. The suspects then forced the four children out of

the vehicle into their Mercedes Benz before they drove off towards the direction of the R81 road, leaving the distraught driver on scene in his vehicle. Police were notified and investigations were launched. The victims’ cellphones were later recovered after they were found dumped at Flora Park. The motive for the incident is unknown at this stage but police investigations are currently underway. In an interview on national radio on Thursday morning, the lawyer for the family said that no ransom demands had been sent as yet, and there were no new leads in the case. The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lt Gnl Thembi Hadebe, has ordered a high level search operation that also involved the Airwing. The kidnapping of children of prominent businesspeople in the Polokwane and Tzaneen area is sadly nothing new.

The son of one of the area’s biggest retailers was kidnapped and only released after ransom was paid, four months ago. Anyone with information regarding the incident

should urgently contact the investigating officer Capt Ntlane Rasedile on 082 565 8566, the crime stop on 0860 010 111 or the nearest police station or MySAPSApp.

They Pando(ed) through the Packhouse blue gums ■ Roelof de Jonge The Old Packhouse Distillery, famous for Mark Dando’s craft gin, was a hive of activity on Saturday the 16th of October. Thanks to the collaboration between Dando, and Shawn de Meyer, co-founder of the Pando Rewards program, a day of live music and trail running was born. “Pando is big on supporting local businesses and the goal is to create benefits to local business owners as well as to the community by supporting them. We wanted to organize an event where locals can network and create connections while having fun and making meaningful connections with their fellow business owners”, said de Meyer. “Pando is a network marketing company that provides businesses marketing services, and as an exchange our members get discounts and special offers from the businesses we provide marketing for. Our members can also earn money through our referral system”. Inside the packhouse, picknick benches awaited visitors along with a cash bar offering a wide selection of the distillery’s gin and rum produce. Aside from these choices of liquor, End Street Breweries, who are now also situated at the Old Packhouse, had two of their popular locally produced beers on offer. Besides the attraction of the bar counter and

the live music, a host of entertaining activities were set aside for the children who tagged along for the day with their parents. There was also a quick 10 kilometre trail run through the surrounding blue gum plantations which a handful of runners enjoyed and was ultimately won by local runner, Angelique Els. Prizes for the run were sponsored by Pando members and included voucher from Monya’s, Meet and Greet, Hair by Shawn, Forever Beaut, Mirandi’s Aesthetics, Wax On Wax Off carwash and the hardware giant, Magic Build.

A cause worth not seeing for VLU eet uit die pakkie

Jacques de Wit and Belinda Luckhoff.

■ Joe Dreyer Ever tried eating without being able to see what it is that you are being served? On Friday evening a group of diners at Tzaneen Country Lodge joined the Lions Club for an evening of fine dining without sight in a bid to raise awareness of the plight of those who live with blindness and impaired sight. Diners were treated to a three-course meal, served in the dark, and only after all those seated were blindfolded. The courses were specifically designed to make the experience all the more daunting by combining interesting textures such as the starter which consisted of smoked salmon on a bed of mashed potatoes. Guests were however given a menu to warn

them of the dishes that they would be served, but the menu was in Braille. The main course was a curried chicken wrap which made trying to eat it even more difficult considering its shape. Desert was a jelly and crumbed tart of sorts. Not being able to see what they were eating proved a task too much for some of the guests who ditched the eating utensils and opted to use their hands instead. Funds were raised for the Lions Club’s Operation Brightsight, through an auction at the end of the evening. The proceeds raised during the event will be used to further this cause. At the time of going to print it was not clear how much money was raised. This is the second time that the Dinner in the Dark event was hosted in Tzaneen.

The contention for the top team in the Bowls Business League, hosted by Tzaneen Bowls Club, is heating up. Even if the welcoming rain in the area the past two weeks dampened the organizing of the event slightly, it was not enough to cancel it. Because of the rain though, the round of Group A which is played on Tuesday evenings, had to be shifted a week on to accommodate the schedule. The team of Van Vuuren Prokureurs is at loggerheads with the side of Mr Consulting 1 in Group A after their third-round matches. Both teams have accumulated 28 points each. In third place, a mere point behind the leaders, is the team of CJBK (27 points). The team of BCS is fourth on 25 points with the players of Thomas & Swanepoel 2 having amassed a total of 24 points so far.

The team of Roumen Farms tops the leaderboard with a total of 19 points in Group B after their second-round competition. The farm team players cannot rest assured just yet as the teams of BB Nissan and Wile E Coyotes also have a total of 19 points. Only difference is that the team of Roumens Farms has a better aggregate score of 23, than that of the 13 by the BB Nissan team and the 10 of Wile E Coyotes. The fourth place in Group B is occupied by the Lannie Motors team on 18, with Tzaneen Tennis Club who now is in fifth place with 17 points. For more information in regard with bowls or to render the club’s catering facilities, persons are welcome to contact club committee members Joan Bisset (083 893 5135) or Stoffel Vermaak (083 981 4994).

Improve yields by helping your crop fight off stress. Dicarboxylic acid, the active ingredient in PHOTON®

What is PHOTON?

What does PHOTON do?

PHOTON is a 500g/kg water soluble granule which is a blend of dicarboxylic acids. These compounds are naturally occurring in many species of plants.

PHOTON stimulates the key stress sensing enzyme systems in plants so that they are prepared to react quickly and effectively to environmental stresses, such as excessive temperatures (hot and cold).

Available in 500g plastic jars with tamper evident lids.

Key points about PHOTON? Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

Unique mode of action. Season long protection from heat and chilling injury. Can be used on all crops at any time during the season. Very low rate of use = g/Ha. Soluble granule formulation dissolves readily in water. Based on naturally occurring plant compounds. Flexible tank mix compatibility.

It’s applied as a foliar spray and is taken in by the plant within 24 hours. After this the product is rain-fast. PHOTON remains effective in the plant for approximately 21 days, after which it becomes inert. To obtain the best results Photon should be used in a season long program to maintain the protection against abiotic stresses. PHOTON can be applied at any time of the growing season up to harvest, on all crops, including tree fruits & vines, vegetables and field crops.

Another Outeniqua Yellowwood planted in Plasie country ■ Roelof de Jonge In celebration of Heritage Day, the executive committee of Merensky High School planted yet another Outeniqua Yellowwood (Podocarpus falcatus) on the 30th of September.

The annual M-Awards of Merensky High School on the 13th of October, was on the brink from being held as a virtual event. Then on the eve of the 30th of September, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the country was going to implement level 1 restrictions for the country. For the organisers and the nominees of the M-Awards, this was great news of course. Plans were quickly put in place for the event to be held in front of a live audience. The Covid-19 restrictions allowed the organisers and the 18 gr.11 candidates, nominated by their fellow learners, to come up with video recordings on the BlouBank and in the famous Plasie lane, thus ensuring that the judges could get to know them better. For the first time in the history of the M-Awards, the

This tree was donated by Merensky Timber as a gesture of goodwill with the admonition: “If you care about the future, do good and care for our trees and biodiversity.” The tree was planted at the new small stock plant, where it forms part of the new arboretum planted by the gr.8 learners of 2021.

In the middle are Sanel Botha, Chantell Meyer, Johan van den Heever, Lesedi Leseilane, Palesa Sambo, Hope Muvhango, Nyasha Patel, Daniel Spies and Hendrik Botes. photogenic awards were determined using social media such as Facebook and Instagram votes. The presenters were established Plasies, Merise Katzke and Steve Kruger. The judging panel consisted of Yasmeen Moosa, Charmaine Dey, Zantie Bosman, Victoria Maphata, Natalee Thomas and Mari Weber. Felix Nomvela and Alrick van Gass were also amongst the judges. The audience was treated to vocal items by gr.9 learner Lané Kruger. André Visagie of Mancave Productions also made an appearance and was also provided the sound and lighting. The public’s votes ensured that Tyla-Reese Pretorius and Carl Dohse were announced as the most photogenic entries.

Reinhard Gerber sal by Peter Schutte oorneem ■ Joe Dreyer

Reinhard Gerber

Peter Schutte

Hy sal einde November amptelik as die nuwe Rugbydirekteur by die Rooi Leër aansluit.

Riders bug-eyed for the Cape Epic prize ■ Roelof de Jonge The Insect Science Mountain Bike team entered two teams for the world famous Cape Epic adventure race which officially started on Monday this week. The team is spearheaded by Alan Gordon with CP van Wyk as his co-rider and Keagan Bontekoning who is partnered with teammate Arno du Toit. On Sunday the riders primed themselves for the official liftoff for the main race by competing in the prologue. The Insect Science riders proudly piloted the new 2022 Santa Cruz Bicycles Blur CC models, rolling on Maxxis rubber to navigate some of the world’s harshest MTB terrain. The pace was set from the word go. Gordon and van Wyk settled into a steady stride for this stage seeing that there was still lots of riding to be done. About 39km’s into the stage they found their teammates stuck with a flat tyre. With Du Toit and Bontekoning being the initial pacesetters for this stage, Gordon and van Wyk thought it best to give them a wheel and sent them to chase after the frontrunners. What seemed like a quick puncture fix, turned out to be more complicated than Gordon and van Wyk anticipated. Gordon in fact had to back track to the previous tech zone for some spares. They eventually got going again, only to be sidelined by yet another puncture. “This was very likely to happen as these trails on the first stage were not tube friendly. It was then a case of hike a bike and rimming it to the second tech zone. From there we had a trouble-free ride, enjoyed the rest of the trails, and conserved some energy for the day’s stages that

were still lying ahead”, Gordon said. Bontekoning and Du Toit provided some positivity for the team after their solid chase to stay in contention for that sought after African Jersey. The second stage went well for Gordon and Van Wyk who crossed the finish line in 21st place. Teammates Du Toit and Bontekoning had an excellent run and completed the stage in 11th place. The most bizarre thing that occurred for rider Van Wyk, was when a falcon darted from out of nowhere and attack him. Probably trying to protect his territory from the invading mountain bike riders. Luckily neither got injured. The third stage was a 91km route with 2 100 metres of climbing that sapped the energy out of the competitors. The Insect Science team described this third stage as riding into a wall, only to realize the route stretches further up this same wall. It was that steep and energy sapping. Even though being a tough stage, Bontekoning Alan Gordon and CP van Wyk. and Du Toit gave good reckoning of themselves by finishing tenth overall for the stage and the third Afremaining four stages over four days that will test their riding skills and rican team to cross the line. Gordon and Van Wyk on fitness to the limit. Bulletin will publish a full report on the Insect Science the other hand rode at a consistent pace to finish the stage in 18th place. By the time you read this article, the teams have already set off for the MTB team’s adventure and achievements in next week’s edition.
