A former SAPS cashier, Kgomotso Yvonne Mashala (34), was convicted on two counts of theft by the Polokwane Specialized Commercial Crimes Court earlier this week. The former SAPS cashier was convicted on Tuesday, the 9th of November and the spokesperson of the Hawks in Limpopo, Matimba Maluleke, said that they welcomed the conviction. The Hawks said that they believed she would be slapped with a hefty sentence when she appeared next year for her sentencing. According to the Hawks, between the 19th of January 2018 and the 7th of February the same year, Mashala was working at the Polokwane police station as a cashier responsible for receiving and depositing State

It would appear as though the crippling lack of effort in delivering services which the municipalities in Limpopo have become known for, is nowhere more evident than in the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality. It is here where it took the DA Ward councilor, Sybrandt de Beer, three years to finally have a bush clearing team from the municipality clear out a section of bush near the Bollanoto Tourism facility across the road from Kruger Park Spar. When the team reluctantly cleared the bush, the debris was pushed into heaps with the intention of being removed at a later date. A date incidentally, which was never set and has now reached five months. The clearing was done in June. The reason for the clearing came after many months of reporting illegal dumping in this portion of the bush which included people dumping the

bodies of their deceased pets, household rubbish and dirty nappies. The situation was reaching dire proportions. The second, and quite possibly most important reason for the clearing of the bush was to allow the municipality’s water department access to the large sewer drains which are continuously blocked, and could apparently never be accessed due to the overgrown bush. The excuses can now no longer be the bush however. But the debris needs to be cleared as it now creates a whole new set of problems including the safety of the residents who have reported that wood collectors were spotted peering into their homes as they collect the firewood in the late afternoons. Councilor De Beer has said that he would be pushing for the municipality’s environmental and parks department to start doing their job and cleaning up the mess.

money into the State Bank account. However, when an audit was conducted, the report indicated that an amount of more than R264 000 was missing and unaccounted for, which was during the period the accused was still a cashier. The matter was referred to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation for further probing. “After a thorough investigation, the National Prosecuting Authority issued the summons against Mashala to appear in court on the 31st of August 2018 and she was duly served,” stated Maluleke. Mashala was then released on bail until she was convicted and is now awaiting sentencing at the Polokwane Specialized Commercial Crimes Court, which will be heard on the 19th of January 2022.

A fight among a group of pupils in a school in Limpopo has claimed the life of a gr.11 pupil and left two others injured on Monday, the 8th of November. The fight broke out while a group of boys were walking home from Magoletša High School in Medingen Village, in Kgapane. The MEC for Social Development Nkakareng Rakgoale has condemned the incident, saying that it’s an indication that social ills such as substance abuse and bullying are still prevalent in some parts of the province. The Limpopo Education department spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said that the principal was called in the afternoon to report that a group of learners fought on their way home. “They stabbed one another, and three were injured and were rushed to hospital. Unfortunately, one of them succumbed to

his injuries,” she said. The Limpopo Departments of Social Development and Education have since dispatched teams of social workers to the family of the gr.11 pupil who died. The social workers will offer psychological support to the school for pupils to cope well as they currently sitting for their end of the year exams. “The incident is once again exposing the behavior by some of our young people in different communities. This violent behavior by children must immediately come to an end. We are urging parents to keep a close eye on their children so that they can notice behavioral changes and report to social workers for an immediate intervention,” said MEC Rakgoale. The Education MEC, Polly Boshielo, also condemned the incident and called on parents and other key stakeholders to be actively involved in supporting schools to deal with the scourge of bullying and abuse.

Maluleke could not reveal to Bulletin the exact figure of employees that would be arrested post the investigations but revealed that there were people employed by the municipality who were allegedly involved in the illegal activities. “We confirm that they seized the laptops of Senior Management officials, and documents or files. The Municipality respects law enforcement and vows to cooperate with the Hawks in dispensing their duties,” stated Jonas Mahesu, spokesperson for the BPM.

It has been eight months since the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality was brought to a standstill by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation members. The unit descended upon the halls of inadequacy and seized tender documents which the municipality had awarded recently. The Hawks in Limpopo are still busy investigation a case of corruption and maladministration, related to shady tenders worth R30 million within the municipality and from the looks of things, it is far from over.

According to the Hawks spokesperson, Cap Matimba Maluleke, there were many leads in the investigations that were pointing them in the right direction. However, he could not share much with the Bulletin but assured us that the investigation was still ongoing. The “shady tenders” include the pool of consulting engineering service providers for infrastructure development projects, and the pool of hiring of property plant and equipment the last few years. Some of the consulting firms were allegedly paid money by the municipal manager, Maite Moakame-

Perhaps it is time for a new electrical chief?

■ Joe Dreyer

There are no answers from the Greater Tzaneen Municipality to explain why certain areas within its jurisdiction were plunged into darkness for more than five days this week. The generic responses on the WhatsApp groups remain the same; “noted”, “we will revert”, the storm caused some outages” etc. When the power station is contacted, the operators have no idea what the problem is, or when it will be repaired, and the technicians claim that they do not have enough vehicles to access all the affected areas. The chief-in-charge at the electrical department, Sam Lelope, remains silent and refuses to engage on WhatsApp groups or speak to the media. In fact, each time he has been added to a WhatsApp Power Complaints group, he has removed himself from it. In the past Bulletin has attempted to secure an interview with the man responsible for ensuring that rate payers receive the service they pay for, but Lelope has refused. In a recent parliamentary committee meeting held virtually in July, where the GTM was grilled for their lack of communication and service delivery to especially the farming community, Lelope seemed completely out of touch with the current situation within his department. “We don’t have issues with capacity to supply,” he said to the Parliamentary committee. He even went so far as to say that the GTM can support any new connections. Which is ironic considering the daily extended power outages which have been ongoing since 2016 in between loadshedding. He also mentioned a partnership agreement with Eskom where the national power supplier agreed to assist the GTM in areas where their customers had no power, but this seemed to be hampered by finances. “Eskom has said that if they want to continue a collaboration with us (the municipality) they will have to account for all the expenditure they incur when assisting the GTM. That is when they came up with the national active partnering initiative,” Lelope said. He further denied that the GTM did not accept the assistance offered by farmers and said there have been several instances where farmers have assisted them in the rainy seasons. He said that when the GTM does refuse acceptance, it is because farmers would want to offset the assistance against their municipal accounts. ***Editor’s comment: So, if we understand this correctly, Sam Lelope’s department wants assistance to fix the problems they cannot handle on their own, but they do not want to remunerate

FOLLOW UP

those assisting them. In other words, they want you to fix their system so that they can continue billing you for the service they did not provide. And at the same time he refuses to address the concerns of the community by refusing to engage on any platform with anyone. The technicians claim that they do not have enough vehicles available to tend to all the faults, or even reach all affected areas. This is strange considering that on the 14th of December 2018, the GTM Mayor, Maripe Mangena and the Municipal Manager Thapelo Matlala, handed over five brand new Nissan NP300 4x4 bakkies to the electrical department (a handover ceremony that was not attended by Sam Lelope either). So, what happened to these vehicles? Bulletin heard a whisper from a source close to the municipality that some of the vehicles’ 4x4 drives were worn out and that some of the vehicles were still at the dealership workshop for maintenance and awaiting payment before being released. We have asked Neville Ndlala, spokesperson for the GTM, to confirm this, and he was busy investigating the matter at the time of going to print. Since the resignation of the municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala, in September this year, service delivery has declined rapidly. There is currently no permanently appointed accounting officer (municipal manager) and Alec Nkuna is currently acting in the role. Every three months a new director will have his or her turn to play MM until a real one is appointed. Before Matlala’s appointment in 2018, the Greater Tzaneen Municipality did not have a municipal manager for ten years, only directors making turns to act, in fact, even Lelope was acting municipal manager and electrical director simultaneously at one stage. It was for this reason that Bulletin dubbed the municipal offices “Hollywood”. In the meantime, the person responsible for the electrical grid, Sam Lelope, can be contacted on 083 450 8732. We encourage our readers to send us their electrical complaints via email to joe@ farnorthbulletin. co.za. Sam Lelope

This mini-sub was smashed to pieces by a vehicle some time in September and to date has still not been repaired or replaced.

Old man with broken hip succumbs ■ Joe Dreyer

Lenie and Eddie McKenzie

The elderly man Bulletin wrote about last week, succumbed to his illness in the Letaba hospital on Sunday morning. The official cause of death on his death certificate reads “natural causes”. Eddie McKenzie was 73-years old when he passed and is survived by his wife Lenie, three children, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. We spoke to Lenie this week to find out exactly what happened. “After your article last week Friday, the spokesperson for the MEC of Health in Limpopo contacted me and said that we should arrange a private ambulance to transport my husband to Letaba hospital immediately. She said that the department would cover the costs and ensure that a doctor is waiting to meet us when we get there,” explained Lenie. Local medical stalwart Deon van Tonder assisted the McKenzie’s and transported them to hospital on Friday afternoon at 13:40. Upon there arrival at the Letaba hospital the doctor noted that Eddie McKenzie was a very ill man. “He told me that my husband was very ill and that he would need urgent medical assistance. I told him our story and he was quite shocked. Although he was not a surgeon, he assured me that he would get the surgeons to have an urgent look at my husband’s hip which he broke four months ago.” The couple were residents of the Pioniers retirement

village in Boundary Street. According to Lenie, her husband had gone to the shops to pick up a birthday cake for his birthday which they were going to celebrate. As he walked across the paving inside the Pioniers village, he tripped on a loose paver and fell, breaking his hip. This happened in June and right up to his death last weekend, not one surgeon at Van Velden or Letaba hospitals booked him for an emergency operation. He lived in agony for four months and the healthcare system stood idly by. “By the time Deon came to fetch him on Friday, my husband couldn’t even drink a teaspoon of water without vomiting it out. A month or so a doctor at Van Velden said that he had some infection in one of his lungs and therefor they could not operate on him. Each week we went back to both hospitals and each time we were sent home and told to rest for two weeks. I told the doctor at Letaba that this could all have been avoided if they saw to his injury four months ago.” The McKenzie’s were married 32 years and Lenie, at age 65, will now stay on in the small bachelor flat she once shared with her husband. He will be cremated today, Friday, the 12th of November. The Health Department is reportedly investigating the matter. We asked spokesperson Niel Shikwambane for an update and more information on the investigations, but at the time of going to print we had received no information.

Test your sugar tomorrow Diabetes affects the lives of millions of people, adults and children alike, worldwide. Visit Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre on Saturday the 13th of November (tomorrow) for a free sugar screening test. This sugar screening initiative will once again be hosted by the Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club in conjunction with a host of partners to help create awareness of this chronic condition. A total of 296 persons, including a small number of children, were tested for diabetes during the 2020 Lions sugar screening drive. This local Lions Clubs was recently awarded the Excellence Award for their plight to fight and campaign against diabetes. This drive on Saturday at Lifestyle Centre forms part of International Diabetes Day which is a global awareness campaign and is held annually on the 14th of November since 1991. It was organized by the International Diabetes Federation. Diabetes is a chronic

(long-lasting) health condition that affects how the body turns food into energy. Most of the food you eat is broken down into sugar (also called glucose) and released into the bloodstream. When a person’s blood sugar goes up, it signals to the pancreas to release insulin. According to the Lions, there are currently 19 million adults in Africa with diabetes, consisting mainly out of Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) which is a long-term medical condition. Which means your body doesn’t use insulin properly, resulting in unusual blood sugar levels. The Letaba Lions Club Tzaneen would like to thank Lifestyle Centre, who is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, for their annual support as well as the following partners: Peter Meyer Electrical, Van Heerden Pharmacy, DR Spies and Partners, Richard Pretorius, Far North Bulletin, In Touch, iInfo Tzaneen, Spar and Katbok Radio.

Finally, they clean their room It appears that the dripping tap eventually receives the plumber’s attention. Following eight months’ worth of reporting on the dire situation in Boundary Street where illegal dumping continued unabated, the municipality finally gave in and sent one of their TLB’s to the site to flatten the mountains of construction debris and garden refuse. How long will this last however, is a debate

for another day. Residents just do not care about the bylaws. And why should they when there are no consequences for disobedience given the complete absence of any law enforcement in town? The piece of land in this image belongs to Renier de Lange and dumping here is illegal. Residents are warned that numberplates, vehicles and faces will be published.

Sydney the hardest Gravel Grinder ■ Roelof de Jonge

On Saturday morning the 30th of October, a host of mountain bike racers and avid riders took on the mighty triple G - Gravelotte’s Gravel Grinder. This race was organized by the Jakkalsroep Venue and Tzaneen Cycling Club with NTT Isuzu as the event sponsor. The race with various distances to compete in, was held on the property of Jakkalsroep. The main race challenged the riders over 120km with the heat intensifying as the race progressed. Sydney Swart conquered the hot conditions to win the race in a time of 04:26:55.1 and managed to win the Sub Veteran Men’s category, ahead of Alan Gordon who finished the race in fourth place overall. The Stanford Lake College rider and Insect Science MTB Team member, Gunther Katzke, was the winner of the Men’s Elite division. He crossed the line in second place, with just 3,31 seconds separating him from Swart. Bill Noel, who was the first Veteran Men’s entry over the line, took up the third sport. Retha Beukes was the first female entry over the line, she competed in the Veteran Women’s category and finished in 24th place overall. A total of 42 riders entered for this 120km with only 36 making it to the finish line. Willie Junior Willemse (Youth Men’s Division winner) had a race-long tussle for the lead in the 35km race with John Menster (Master Men’s Category winner). The younger and more energetic Willemse just managed to eventually keep his nose in front of his older rival to take the first place. Willemse completed the race in 01:14:25.8 with a hard chasing Menster hot on his heels, with just 0.01.7 of a second

There was also a 15km race for the less adventurous and fitness conscious cyclists who had more of a sightseeing excursion in mind than racing at full speed. Robert Noel (winner of the U/12 Boys Sprogs category) blitzed through this 15km course to take the win in just 37 minutes. Aron van den Borre (U/10 Boys Nippers division winner) pressured the winner hard all the way to the line and missed out on the victory by the narrowest of margins, with just 0.58 of a second separating the first two place finishers. Shirlene van den Borre who kept a keen eye over her young one leading the 15km race, was the first women’s entry to complete the race in third place. She was the winner of the Open Women’s class and finished in a time of 38 minutes, a mere second behind the front running finishers. A Total of 54 riders entered for the 15km fun race. Alles(Fit)ste lifts enduro crown

■ Roelof de Jonge

It was Friday, the 5th of November - arguably one of the hottest and most humid days Tzaneen had experienced in a very long time - when Health and Fitness Tzaneen took hands with Momentum Tzaneen and decided to host their first ever Spinning Boot Camp for businesses. After about two hours, the team from Allesbeste Farm and Padstal emerged as the Fittest of the Fit and proudly attempted to raise the floating trophy above their shoulders (a feat reserved for only the daring given Jennifer Vercueil the grueling two hours prior). The Avocado athletes were Tersia Ernst, Donovan and Retha Beukes and Neels van der Merwe. This event was also held for another important purpose, aside from people getting active, having fun and living healthy. The money that was raised through the team entries, will be donated to the Suid-Afrikaanse Vroue Federasie (SAVF) in Tzaneen. This federation will utilize the money for its orphanage care centre with the idea to spoil the children with a Christmas meal. What made the spinning contest a little more tricky was the rules adapted for the purpose of equalizing the field. Health and Fitness owner, Ettienne van Wyngaardt, decided on a more “holistic” approach. The Ettiene van Wyngaardt from Health rules were simple; four members per team spinning on the stationary Tersia Ernst from Allesbeste. and Fitness Gym. bike for two hours in a relay format, meaning that the members could swap the hotseat whenever they needed to in order to keep racking in wait for their turn to pedal, everyone get some exercise to do,” he the kilometres. The catch was that whilst one of the team members was explained. “Our bodies are there for us to enjoy to the fullest, for on the bike, the other three each had to remain active. Should one of them only once a lifetime, if it is gone, its gone forever. That is why it is so stop, the spinning bike rider had to stop as well. The activities for the other important to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. Exercise is of members including holding a dumbbell raised to shoulder level for as long utmost importance, and it can help prevent and aid chronic condias possible, holding up a 5kg barbell, and stepping up and down the steps to tions like diabetes and cholesterol amongst others.” keep the rider on the stationary bike going. Van Wyngaardt and his team of fitness professionals from Health “The whole idea was that every participant should have fun. Whilst one of the and Fitness Tzaneen are ready to help with advice to any person who team members was pedaling, the other three were taking part in some other wants to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. Give them a visit form of exercise. This ensured that the other participants don’t have to sit and

now and unleash an active and healthier you. “In the end everybody had loads of fun, which was the intention of this idea, to see happy and active people enjoying themselves.”
