Could this be Greater Tzaneen’s new mayor?

Word around the corridors of the Greater tzaneen Municipality is that the current mayor, Maripe Mangena, has been removed from his office and will be relocated elsewhere which leaves the door open for possibly the first member of the Bolobedu people to wear the golden chains. Some relief however, comes with the news that current speaker and former mayor, Dikeledi Mmetle, will be redeployed to the Mopani District. Page 3

As the South African Airforce Kudu passed over their heads, members of the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTH) dressed in full uniform and rows of medals pinned to their petals, gazed into the sky once again. The air seemed to be talking with the sun, and the waves of heat that swept through on that Sunday morning was intolerable, but it had nothing on the MOTH members who gleamed with excitement as one of their own flew over them a couple of times before disappearing over the horizon. It was Remembrance Day on Sunday, 14th of November, which commemorates the negotiated end of five years of slaughter. This day is observed every year on the closest Sunday to November 11th. “For they shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old, age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn, at the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them”. These words echoed at the remembrance parade

as the members remembered their fallen ones. Armistice Day commemorated the end of a war, it celebrated when the guns went silent, at least for a while. World War 1 ended when hostilities ceased on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. It was during this war that just over 62 million soldiers were involved in combat and almost 10 million of them lost their lives, just over 21 million were wounded, and 8 million went missing in action. The participants had vowed that this would be the ‘war that ends all wars’, albeit two more still came. The dream of a ‘war to end all wars’ was shattered in 1939 when the world once again went to war, subsequently many small wars were fought and in many of these South Africans were involved. However, things were done a little different this year as the parade which was held at Minefield Shellhole in Phalaborwa saw Long Tom MOTH’s of

Tzaneen visiting them for the weekend. The Old Bill of the Long Tom shellhole, Moth John Anderton, explained that the reason they came to Phalaborwa was a show of solidarity. “We sincerely hope to host them in Tzaneen next year. We are only two to three years old, so it was certainly beneficial for us to come here as we can see how a fully established shell hole operates,” explained Anderton. The Old Bill of the Minefield Shellhole, Moth Skip Bischoff, laid a cross on behalf of the MOTH and Minefield Shellhole. Representatives from 7 SAI and 5 Recce, laid a cross on behalf of all South African soldiers who lost their lives in past wars. Lt Col Agnus Christie laid a cross on behalf of the South African Police members who lost their lives during the internal uprising and on the border. Other individuals laid crosses on behalf of family members who lost their lives during the second world war and the border war.

The MOTHs salute the SAF Kudu as it does a flyover.

Six of the 10 lions that had wandered off their restrictive area earlier last month and ultimately led to their relocation up North of the Kruger, are now living their wildest live. Driving through the scorching heat of the Kruger National Park trying to locate the six lions, to recollar them, is no ordinary job. Bulletin was part of the team of personnel that was to find, dart, and collar the lions using a radio frequency to search for them over the weekend. For a full two hours, we drove up, down in circles in a terrain only rovers should be driving trying to locate the pride. A hundred no entry turns later; we are signaled by the Wildlife Endangered Trust to stop. Roughly 70 meters ahead in tall grass we are pointed towards where the lions, according to the radio frequency, were sitting. In the distance, a herd of buffalos were grazing, and the lions looked on slowly, but now with human intervention in an area not frequented by vehicles, the lions spotted us and made a run for it, only giving us a glimpse of their tails. The six lions were part of a pride of 10 that were wandering around a

Namakgale ■ Billy Sibuyi Only after a woman was murdered this weekend, the provincial commissioner of police ordered for the immediate intervention by the police in Namakgale just outside Phalaborwa. The community of Namakgale has for several years had their plights land on deaf ears at the police station as most people were not assisted in opening cases. “For a person to get their case registered they need to know a higher official or somebody who knows another official, and so on,” said one resident. But that will now hopefully come to an end as Lt Genl Thembi Hadebe has taken note of concerns raised by the Ba-Phalaborwa community regarding a particular crime ridden spot under Namakgale policing area. She has ordered an immediate intervention to mitigate against the causative factors in the area. On Saturday, the 13th of November, a 31-year-old woman was attacked and stabbed by unknown suspect(s) at Zone C, Bosveld. The victim, according to the police was taken to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The police were called by the hospital staff and a case of murder was then opened. The deceased was identified as Pontsho Ngomani of Namakgale.

Her mother, Suzy Ngomani, was devasted when she spoke to Bulletin, but she said that just like her daughter, she too is forgiving. “I only heard the words, your daughter was killed, and it hurts me so deeply because I have lost an angel, my angel,” she said as she burst into tears. The intervention team sent out by Hadebe will investigate all cases that were reported in the area with a view of speeding up their investigations and to deal with other operational imperatives. “We therefore call on community members in the area and other role players to work together with the police to fight crime in the area,” said Hadebe. The police have called on anyone with information related to the murder to dial the Crime Stop number 0860010111 or MySAPSApp. Callers may opt to remain anonymous, and any information received will treated with confidentiality.

farm’s living quarters near Malelane and had to be darted. Isaac Phaahla, the spokesperson of the SANParks, said that two lions were left in the south, and eight relocated to the North. Out of the eight, the six were the ones we had been tracking. The lions were spotted wandering around Riverside Farm living quarters, a property adjacent to the Kruger National Park, along the Crocodile River, by a staff member. The farm members informed the Malelane Section Ranger, who immediately lifted his light sport aircraft and flew over the farm to try and locate the animals. “In a joint effort from Rangers, Veterinary Wildlife Services, State Veterinary Department and Riverside Farm the animals were lured onto a bait shortly after sunset, in order to be safely immobilized and returned to the Park,” SANParks had said.

Man shot in broad daylight at bank – robbed ■ Joe Dreyer A man was shot in the leg in broad daylight, reportedly in the presence of a nearby uniformed police officer, and robbed of a large amount of cash just outside FNB in Morgan Street. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, the 11th of November at around 13:30 when the victim, a man in his 50’s was underway to deposit cash for his employer. “I regularly deposit money for our company and usually use alternative routes and different banks in the area. I make sure to hide the money very well and look very inconspicuous as I know the risks,” the man explained whilst speaking to Bulletin from his gurney in the casualties ward at Van Velden hospital. According to the victim who requested anonymity, he was walking down Morgan Street towards FNB when he noticed two young African males approaching from the front. Both men were carrying 9mm pistols in their hands and were looking straight at him. As he passed one of the electronics stores near the bank, the two men pushed him into the alleyway and one of the assailants pointed the gun at his chest and pulled the trigger. “There was no bullet in the chamber and all I heard was “click-click” and no gunshot. This led me to believe it was a toy gun and so I fought back, wrestling my attackers to the ground where the other guy pulled the trigger on his own pistol and two shots rang out. I didn’t know that I had been shot in the leg, but the robbers grabbed the money. I managed to grab my phone out of the hands of one of them as they turned and walked off. That’s when I felt the warmth down my calve, looked down and saw I was shot.” The victim called his wife who rushed over to his side from her place of employment a short while away in the same vicinity of the bank.

Some bystanders assisted the victim and the police and emergency services were summoned. According to the victim, a uniformed police officer was inside the bank’s ATM section at the time of the shooting. He said that he saw the police officer exit the building moments after the shooting, look at him on the ground, and climb into his vehicle and drive off. Shockingly, in most of the retail outlets along Morgan Street, there are security guards stationed at the entrances. Not one of these security guards pushed a panic button or tried to assist the victim. Witnesses told Bulletin that the two assailants walked across the street after they shot the man, climbed into a white Toyota Corolla and drove off as if nothing had happened. In the meantime, the victim was treated at Van Velden hospital for a gunshot wound, but x-rays revealed that shrapnel from the bullet was scattered throughout a large portion of his calve and so he was admitted and kept overnight. For a reason not quite clear, there was no operation performed and he was sent home the following day with a course of antibiotics. “I was told I faced the threat of lead poisoning and so I needed to finish my antibiotics first.” A case was opened at the police station and at the time of going to print there have been no arrests. We received cctv footage from one of the retailers near the bank

Serial killer behind bars

■ Jeff Jackson

A Zimbabwean-born serial killer, Temba Dube, who murdered seven women after luring them in with promises of employment in Limpopo, has abandoned his bail application this week at the Seshego magistrate court. He will spend the festive season behind bars. Temba Dube was charged with murder and kidnapping after the bodies of five women he allegedly killed, were found in different locations around Polokwane. He was also found in possession of the cellphone of one of the victims which was used to demand ransom from one member of her family. He will appear again on the 27th of January 2022. The court was attended by the minister in the presidency for Women, Youths, and People with disabilities, Maite Nkoana Mashabane, who called on communities to do away with gender-based violence. In another incident, a Nigerian national was sentenced to five life terms and five years for the kidnapping and raping of three Limpopo women who were lured with promises of employment by the men before being offered spiked drinks and kidnapped. The 37-year old Peter Akadaronge kidnapped the women in 2017 at

Thohoyandou when they met him and two other men while looking for work. According to the National Prosecting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjongondwane, the victims testified that they were looking for work when they met the three men who promised to offer them jobs. “They testified that they found themselves in a room with two unknown ladies. The room had no windows and no furniture, except the mattress on the floor. The two ladies informed them that they were in Rossetenville, Johannesburg.” She added that then the three men removed them and said that they had found the jobs they were looking for which meant they were to sell their bodies. “When they refused, they were raped as initiation for these jobs. They brought different men to have sex with them and when they refused they were assaulted and starved of food, and then offered drugs.” After six months, the men started to trust the women and would leave them unguarded inside the yard. In May 2018 the women fled to the local police station where they opened a case against the culprits. The police managed to arrest Akaradonge the following day with the other men who were later released. He stayed behind bars until the matter was finalized.

upon which the two robbers are seen robbing another victim a week or so prior to this latest incident, at the same spot right in front of the bank. They are seen running across the road, splitting up and entering two different retailers. A few minutes later they exit and a white or grey(ish) coloured Toyota Corolla pulls up and they enter and drive off. One of the medical staff at Van Velden told Bulletin that they have treated three similar victims in their casualty ward in the last few months. There story is eerily similar. There remains a number of unanswered questions which include why these two suspects have not yet been apprehended, or why the police have not been able to trap them or track their vehicle which is clearly visible on the cctv footage. Given that the incident occurred less than a kilometre from the Tzaneen police station, it begs the question why a “manhunt” has not yet been initiated considering the frequency of these brazen attacks. Lastly, and arguably most concerning, is why the uniformed police officer did nothing to try and help the victim, or at least call for backup to try and apprehend the criminals through roadblocks? At the time of going to print the victim said that he was in a tremendous amount of constant pain and that he would be returning to Van Velden for further checkups. This is a developing story and we will follow up in the next edition.

New Mayor for Tzaneen?

■ Jeff Jackson

The ANC in the Mark Shoppe subregion of Mopani is expected to forward the name of Gershwin Molapisane as the new mayor of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM). And history will be written as he will be the first politician from Bolobedu South to be appointed as the mayor of Tzaneen since the inception of municipalities in 2000 - Municipalities started in 1995 as Transitional Local Councils (TLC`s). The appointment of mayors for the GTM has, since as far back as 2000, been a contentious matter as the people from Bolobedu complained that they were not well represented as none of their leaders ever led the municipality. Ironically, during the run up to the local government elections, the vehicle of the incoming mayor was stolen at the Tzaneen Swimming pool facility while he was addressing workers affiliated to the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU). According to a SAMWU shop steward, the white Fortuner SUV was parked in the parking lot at the entrance to the public swimming pool facility when it was stolen. The vehicle was found abandoned in Lenyenye the following day. This sparked speculations that the theft might have been politically motivated. No arrests have been made so far. The local government elections 2021 in Tzaneen was

a fight between the two ANC camps - those aligned to the Radical Economic Transformation (RET) led by the deposed Jacob Zuma, and the White Monopoly Capital (WMC) purportedly led by Cyril Ramaphosa. And the deployment to the highest office in municipalities had to be based on the factions. Unlike in the past dispensation in which the mayors were elected by the branches through the proportional lists, this time the ANC resolved to hold interviews for prospective mayors as well as to place conditions and qualifications for the office. Conditions included that those appointed as mayors should at least possess post graduate qualifications and they should not have a criminal record. After the 1995 transitional local elections which was the first after the 1994 elections, a Nkowankowa-based doctor, Felix Masinge, was appointed as the first Mayor of the Tzaneen Transitional Council for one year while Jan de Lange was the town clerk. From then on, the position of the mayor was offered to Othaniel Mushwana who was re-elected each year until 2000 when Diamond Mushwana took office. After the 2000 election O J Mushwana was re-elected the Mayor of the new GTM that absorbed the local municipalities of Heanertsburg TLC, Letsitele TLC and the Tzaneen TLC. Mushwana led until in 2016 when he was replaced by Dikeledi Mmetle and later Maripe Mangena and both served one term.

Lower Sabie filling station destroyed ■ Billy Sibuyi

Ahead of the festive season, SANParks Kruger National Park has lost an asset in the form of a fueling station that was gutted by a fire on Saturday evening, 13th of November. The petrol station in Lower Sabie was gutted by a fire after being struck by lightning - the third fire in a space of a month in the KNP. Visitors are urged to either fill up at Skukuza or Crocodile Bridge. Less than a month ago, the park’s Tamboti camp and Kingfisher ranger post had to be evacuated when a fire broke out. But guests returned to their camp sites after the blaze was contained. The management in the KNP said that the fire reportedly started at around 21:00 and the fire teams of the KNP managed to bring the fire under control, however with the entire garage being damaged and a vehicle whose owner is still unknown to this publication, was destroyed. The spokesperson, Isaac Phaahla, mentioned that

no persons or animals were injured in that fire. Moreover, he said that they have seen an uptake with campers as it has been full since guests were allowed to come back into the park. Phaahla mentioned that tourism in the park looked hopeful even though they were struggling to have guests book their official accommodation such as chalets, guest houses, and some of the guest cottages. “For the festive season we have bookings of about 80% and we still have 20% available. So, we urge all South Africans who would love to visit the park to call our central reservation number and come and enjoy the wildlife,” mentioned Phaahla. The Park will not be requesting a vaccination certificate from the public and said that 70% of the parks employees had already been vaccinated. According to Phaahla, there will be a strong visibility of law enforcers to clamp down on the speedsters in the Kruger. He has also called on the park visitors to report any law breakers to the authorities of the park.

Independent beats ANC ■ Jeff Jackson Civic affairs in ward 34 of the Greater Tzaneen Muicipality (GTM) will take a new twist after the election of community leader and farm manager, Eric Ralepelle, as the ward councillor. Ralepelle was, in 2006, elected the councillor for the area under the Alliance for Democracy and Prosperity (ADP) and later returned to the ANC and lost the councillorship in 2016. Ralepelle who resides at Mathlogwe section in Lephepane has now promised the community he would not return to the ruling party which had already shown him the door for defiance after he contested the election on his own. He said that from now on his focus will be on serving the community which elected him against the mighty ANC. The election of Ralepelle had left Tzaneen shocked because people believed it is hard to defeat the ANC, and as a result the ANC had lost the ward to one of its own members. He was for the past few years serving as the chairperson of the branch, and when his name could not be selected for councillorship together with other members of the ANC, they decided to contest the election as independent councillors. Though it did look serious that the ANC was going to lose the ward, matters came to a head a few days before the election when members of the ruling party were told during the door-to-door campaigns that the ANC would not be voted in. While campaigning was closed a day before special votes

could commence, the ruling party raised eyebrows when they campaigned even after the deadline. When contacted for comment, Ralepelle said that though it was not easy to defeat the ANC in its stronghold he was happy to had defeated the party with a high margin. He added that they had managed to secure 745 votes against the 500 that was obtained by the ANC and said that they are not going to relax but instead they will work hard to ensure that the community receive better services. “We are not going to return to the ANC and instead we will work hard to make sure that the community get the services they had for long been deprived of such as water and housing.” In many of the wards in Tzaneen, except ward 14, 15 and 34, the ANC had emerged as victors with the EFF trailing behind by securing most of the Proportional Representations (PR) seats they had in the past. They had managed to retain a PR seat at Lenyenye while also gaining some of the PR seats in most of the wards in the Nkowankowa and Bulamahlo cluster. A councillor told Bulletin that the people of Lephepane started complaining when the name of the councillor who served for two consecutive terms was introduced to the community to be voted for. “The community had during consultations told the ANC that incumbent, Margareth Letsoalo, served for ten years as the councillor and they want a new person. They voted otherwise because their wish was tossed aside.”

Give respect, beget respect, achieve success ■ Joe Dreyer On the morning of October 31st in 2001 a new dawn broke over the R71 as you enter the sleepy hollow of Tzaneen. A bright haven for motorists in the area outshone the morning sun as Excell opened its doors. Under the ownership of Willemien Roettgers-Schulte and Sharon de Reuck this new fuelling station answered the call long before the birth of what is now the much-loved Lifestyle centre on the hill across from it. Three years later the Excell underwent a rebirth and since then has become known as the Sasol R71. At the turn of 2011, De Reuck took early retirement and left the care of the fuelling station and its amenities in the capable hands of Roettgers-Schulte who to this day, guards over it with the fervent passion of a proud mother. In the years leading up to the present, many changes were seen at the site which included the addition of a Steers takeout in 2005, two ATMs, an amazing coffee offering, and an increase in staff compliment to 45 hyper diligent attendants – of which 37 have been at the company for longer than five years and 24 of those have been in the employ of Sasol for longer than a decade. A few elements are quite unique to this specific fuelling station, however. One of the most prolific, is the fact that it is almost entirely run by women, barring a single male bookkeeper. This would explain the almost pedantic attention to detail and customer service which they have become renowned for. Most of all though, the success story can be attributed to the vision and drive of their visionary leader. Willemien Roettgers-Schulte has always had a keen business mind. In the early 1980’s after returning from a tennis scholarship in Alabama in the United States, she studied law at the University of Stellenbosch. Her agricultural roots in Modjadjiskloof however called her back to the family farm

where she settled and entered the avocado and macadamia nut industry. She is still involved in that operation 30 years later. Besides the fuelling station, she branched into other service industries and today owns Debonaires, Fish Aways and Geramundo based in the Lifestyle Centre. Her staff will tell you that the “Boss Badge” is not one worn by their employer and despite employing in the region of 160 people, she is able to greet most of them by name. “Willemien has a great ability to delegate tasks. But what makes her most successful is her way of empowering those that work with her and for her,” said Sasol manager, Cordi Botha. “She understands how hard you work, the challenges you face, and it makes her incredibly proud when one of us succeeds. Whether it is in saving to put your child through school or building a room – your success makes her so happy. She thrives on helping people.” She helped most of her staff buy water tanks as she knows the struggle they have in accessing clean water. Most recently Willemien completed a project 12 years in the making when she succeeded in constructing a road to link the R71 to Boundary Street. The construction of this road has eased traffic congestion and opened a large portion of unused commercial property for exciting future developments currently in the planning phase. The beauty of the new road project is that it cost the municipality not a single cent as Willemien bore the costs herself through negotiations with developers and the municipal manager of the time, Thapelo Matlala. The future looks bright for Willemien and her

team as they celebrate their 20th year of existence this weekend. The celebrations kicked off on Tuesday evening when she took the unpresidented move to completely close the fuelling station for the entire evening and treat her entire staff compliment to dinner at The Meet and Greet as a way

of thanking them for contributing to the success of the business. Be sure to make a turn at Sasol on the R71 this Friday (today) from 10:00 to 17:00 to join in the festivities. There will be a live dj and some amazing giveaways, so be sure to make this stop your next stop.

Willemien and Cordi.

Construction on the new road that now connects the R71 with Boundary street started earlier this year.

Ten years on and growing ever faster ■ Joe Dreyer Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre celebrated a decade of trading on Saturday, the 13th of November amid great pomp and ceremony courtesy of local radio station Katbok Radio and several other local businesses. The Lions Club took the opportunity to conduct free sugar testing in solidarity with international Diabetics Month and managed to screen more than 200 people on the day. For the little ones there was face painting, jumping castles and even a fun run around the premises. Stalls lined the parking lot as local business joined in the festivities. Locals took the opportunity to familiarize themselves with local estate agents, car dealerships, jewellers, and other businesses hugely affected by the 2020 lock down. Art students from Ben Vorster High exhibited their work in the main foyer of the centre and retailers offered amazing one-day-only deals. The centre was officially opened in 2011 and since then

has grown from strength to strength. This centre boasts the Shoprite / Checkers Group’s flagship retail outlet. The Checkers situated here, is the leading store in the entire Gauteng region (Limpopo falls under this region). It also recently gained a Mr Price Home and a Milady’s outlet and there are whispers in among the corridors of an exciting Phase 2 development. The centre is managed by Suzette Dippenaar and falls under the Resilient Property Group which owns large stakes in several shopping centres and malls across the country including Tzaneng Mall and Tzaneen Crossing. The woman charged with the management of all three the local shopping centres, Alida Smit, said that she was very happy with the weekend’s proceedings. “It is humbling to see the support our little centre receives from the local community. It shows that we are doing something right and that it is being appreciated. We look forward to spending the next decade in the company of our beloved Tzaneen and thank everyone for their continued support. Should any of our regular visitors identify a need for improvement, we encourage you to please let us know, so that we can make work of it.”

A new Lion roars in Letaba pack ■ Roelof de Jonge Martin Froise was elected as the new leader of the Tzaneen Lions pride on Saturday evening the 13th of November. The changing of the guard took place during the annual Presidential Induction Ceremony at Tzaneen Country Lodge. This was where current president Rodney Sabatier handed over the reins to the newly inducted Froise, who will serve for the following three years. When the Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club inducted Sabatier as its president three years ago, little did he know what lay ahead. Hardly a year into his leadership role, the Covid-19 pandemic turned the world on his head. He, however, did not let the pandemic get him down and showed immense leadership skills and gusto. With the support of his fellow Lions, they spent hours of their time distributing food parcels through donations to help many destitute

families who were the worst affected by the lock down regulations. Because of this, the Lions bestowed upon Sabatier a rare honour; the Melvin Jones Honoury Pin, to highlight his outstanding leadership role amidst the most difficult times. The Lions also inducted three new members into the club. The induction of the new members was performed by Letaba Tzaneen Lions Past District Governor (PDG), Ian King. The new Lion’s are Diane Koelman, Lizette Froise and Ashleigh McLaren. This club now boasts a membership total of 21, with more pending inductions planned for next year. For the first time ever, the club handed out a new award to a member, namely the Lion of the Year. This award, for the most dedicated Lions member, was awarded to Lallie Williams. Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club also thanked the host and sponsors, Tzaneen Country Lodge, for the venue and outstanding catering services delivered.

■ Joe Dreyer Patrick Styles (60) has walked about 40 000kms since he started his journey to spiritual enlightenment way back in 2013. He is originally from Koster, near Rustenburg, and was spotted on the road near Soekmekaar on Wednesday this week by a Bulletin reader who took a moment to snap this image of the tall, grey-haired man with the large wooden cross. Styles has made many headlines over the last few years during his journey. He was declared medically unfit after an accident on one of the mines he worked on, and since then started the travelling “for Jesus.” In one interview he told a journalist that his wife is very supportive of his walking and that although he has an overnight bag and a sleeping bag, he has never used it as hotels and other businesses usually sponsor him for a night. He said that he would likely make it to Tzaneen by Friday afternoon (today) if all goes well.

The new Lion’s who were welcomed to the pride are Diane Koelman, Lizette Froise and Ashleigh McLaren. Newly elected preisdent, Martin Froise, welcomed them with this gesture.

The Lion of the Year award was handed to Lallie Williams by the outgoing President, Rodney Sabatier.

Fourth Kin is the tallest tree in the world ■ Leon Visser, Komatiland Forests and the Dendrological Society of South Africa

Magoebaskloof boasts two new world records after a successful tree climbing expedition in the Kloof on the 8th of November. This tree climb took place in a stand of exotic Saligna gum trees (Eucalyptus Saligna) which were declared as national champion trees more than a decade ago. These trees were planted by forestry pioneer AK Eastwood in 1906. They are located on the Magoebaskloof State Forest, managed for commercial plantation purposes by the forestry company Komatiland Forests (an affiliate of Safcol). The Champion tree project is managed by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) to list and protect trees of exceptional national conservation value. Eight years ago Leon Visser, an arborist who serves on the Champion Tree Evaluation Panel of DFFE, climbed one of a group of three trees at Magoebaskloof State Forest thought to be the tallest, and measured it at 81.5 metres tall. It was then labelled as the tallest tree in Africa, as well as the tallest planted tree in the world. Since that time another tree of 81.5 metres tall were found in a remote valley of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. This tree is a mahog-

any (Entandrophragma excelsum) discovered by Andreas Hemp, a researcher in plant systematics. There has been another claim for the tallest planted tree in the world, namely a mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans) in the Orokonui Ecosanctuary in New Zealand. Its height was measured in 2018 at 82.25 metres. Earlier this year a privately funded tree climbing expedition was organised to remeasure the gum trees in Magoebaskloof. It was thought that these trees would have grown taller since their last measurement. Leon Visser led a team of four tree climbers, including Cameron Brand, Kyle Brand and Tarl Berry. Anton Opperman, a photographer, joined the team. The Dendrological Society of South Africa assisted Visser to raise the necessary funding. The three tallest trees formerly measured in this tree compartment became known as the Magoebaskloof Triplet. Because of the extreme height of the trees and their proximity, it was difficult to determine which of the tallest trees hold the height record, and there had been a suspicion that an even taller tree might be lurking among them. During the recent visit of the 8th of November, a climbing attempt was therefore made on another tree standing next to the triplets. This tree proved to be the king and was measured at 83.7 metres. It broke two records at once. This is now the tallest tree ever measured in Africa and the tallest planted tree on the planet. The competing claims from Tanzania and New Zealand can be put to rest. This tree has now been named the Fourth Kin, linking it by name to the former record-holding triplet trees. The climbing technique used is by catapulting ropes over the high branches, and then from there over even higher branches. Ascending the Fourth Kin from the ground was almost impossible as its upper branches are hidden by plant growth lower down. The technique followed was to get a rope into the Triplet trees first using a Big Shot (which is a very big catapult). A thin weighted line is shot up about forty meters high and then the climbing line pulled through an anchor point. The climbing team ascended in two teams with the first advancing to a point where they could install long fixed lines for the other two climbers to ascend. Each of the climbers trailed their own 60 metres climbing lines so they could advance to the top of the Triplets. Measuring the height was done by pushing a tape attached to an extension pole through the last four metres to the top leaves of the canopy and dropping the rest of the tape to the ground so that the ground crew read off the height. The Fourth Kin had to be accessed by throwing a weighted line into the upper branches across from the Triplet, installing a second anchor point and then traversing at a height of around 70 metres. Brand and Berry moved across while Visser stayed in the Triplet to provide visual aid to the measurement process. In addition to this they had the benefit of drone coverage to record the event. The fourth climber, Brand (Kyle) had in the meantime abseiled out of the Triplet, and pulled out the two, 100-meter lines which were then sent up to the top of Fourth Kin and tied together to enable a single, long 75m abseil for the three climbers. One of the benefits of this exercise is to highlight the tree heritage of South Africa, and especially giant trees. Planted over a 110 years ago, these trees at Magoebaskloof State Forest are a legacy for generations to come enjoy. A hiking trail winds its way through this stand of trees, and many weary hikers have stared up at their tops in awe.

Masks to help the hearing impaired ■ Roelof de Jonge

A Tzaneen local has come up with an ingenious solution to one of the most frustrating aspects of wearing a mask whenever you’re in public – difficulty hearing people speak to you. This is especially true in noisy environments such as malls and shopping centres, and doubly so when you are a hearing-impaired person relying on lip reading to follow a conversation. Adele Dey, a longtime resident and hearing impaired herself, devised a brilliant solution. With the help of husband, Rodney, who is a very well-known artist in the region, the Dey’s designed and painted masks with bold messages on the front to inform passersby of the wearer’s impediment. “The masks will be exclusively available from Tzaneen Hearing and Speech Centre. Currently there will only be two different washable mask variants available, costing R30 and R50 respectively. I have disposable

masks also in the pipeline, I am just waiting for stock to arrive”, said Dey. Though the project is still in it’s infancy, Dey has already received orders from as far as Gauteng and her plan is to expand even farther than that. She will be reinvesting the money from the sales off the initial stock, to purchase and produce more of these helpful masks. “It is more than just a business to me, obviously it helps as a supplementary income, but the real help is actually making life a little easier for those who struggle with the same challenges that I face daily.” Dey also thanked the following people and businesses for their devoted support of this project. They are Jan Cilliers, Dr Ig van Rensburg, Hettie van Nikkelen Kuyper, Anne Botes, Letaba Locksmiths, Northern Personnel, Du Paint, Ishmail from Magic Build, Hannelie van Niekerk from Sugar Hill and her son, Peter Reed. “I also want to thank my dear husband, Rodney, for all his encouragement and support.”

NTT Isuzu’s hardest Gravel Grinder

■ Roelof de Jonge

On Saturday morning the 30th of October, a host of mountain bike racers and avid riders took on the mighty triple G - Gravelotte’s Gravel Grinder. This race was organized by the Jakkalsroep Venue and Tzaneen Cycling Club with NTT Isuzu Tzaneen as the event sponsor. The race with various distances to compete in, was held on the property of Jakkalsroep. The main race challenged the riders over 120km with the heat intensifying as the race progressed. Sydney Swart conquered the hot conditions to win the race in a time of 04:26:55.1 and managed to win the Sub Veteran Men’s category, ahead of Alan Gordon who finished the race in fourth place overall. The Stanford Lake College rider and Insect Science MTB Team member, Gunther Katzke, was the winner of the Men’s Elite division. He crossed the line in second place, with just 3,31 seconds separating him from Swart. Bill Noel, who was the first Veteran Men’s entry over the line, took up the third sport. Retha Beukes was the first female entry over the line, competing in the Veteran Women’s category to finish in 24th place overall. A total of 42 riders entered for this 120km with only 36 making it to the finish line. Willie Junior Willemse (Youth Men’s division winner) had a race-long tussle for the lead in the 35km race with John Menster (Master Men’s category winner). The younger and more energetic Willemse just managed to eventually keep his nose in front of his older rival to take the first place. Willemse completed the race in 01:14:25.8

with a hard chasing Menster hot on his heels, with just 0.01.7 of a second separating the two riders in the end. Menster’s overall time was 01:14:27.5. Anke Rood from Merensky High School’s MTB team was the winner of the Youth Women’s category and the first female cyclist to finish the 35km race. Rood who finished in an excellent 10th place overall, showed many of the male participants the way home. Her finishing time was 01:26:03.6. A total of 107 cyclist entered for this race. There was also a 15km race for the less adventurous and fitness conscious cyclists who had more of a sightseeing excursion in mind than racing at full speed. Robert Noel (winner of the U/12 Boys Sprogs category) blitzed through this 15km course to take the win in just 37 minutes. Aron van den Borre (U/10 Boys Nippers division winner) pressured the winner hard all the way to the line and missed out on the victory by the narrowest of margins, just 0.58 of a second separating the first two place finishers. Shirlene van den Borre who kept a keen eye over her young one leading the 15km race, was the first women’s entry to complete the race in third place. She was the winner of the Open Women’s class and finished in a time of 38 minutes, a mere second behind the front running finishers. A total of 54 riders entered for the 15km fun race.

The boys meet the new rugby director ■ Roelof de Jonge

Reinhard Gerber

The newly appointed Director of Rugby at Ben Vorster High School, Reinhard Gerber, wasted no time settling into his position. Gerber, with the assistance of fellow rugby coaches, presented a rugby clinic for the U/12 and U/13 players on Saturday the 13th of November. The clinic was organized by Archie Norval and the rest of the school’s coaches whilst Gerber was still coaching in Germany. In the region of 60 eager primary school rugby boys from various primary schools in the region, including Tzaneen, Unicorn, Pietersburg-Oos, Drakensig, Pietersburg-Noord, Dr Annecke, Duiwelskloof and Phalaborwa, attended the clinic. The school’s biokineticist, Cornell Jacobs and his staff, first tended to the boys in the gymnasium where they were subjected to a conditioning test. The focus of this clinic was based on the four fundamentals of rugby, namely passing, defence, rucking and continuity. Each of these fundamentals were thoroughly explained by Gerber, focusing on the basics followed by progressive drills. “The boys were full of energy and keen to learn. You could really see these youngsters were hungry to get back onto the field. The parents were just as enthusiastic and the feedback we received from them was really positive and humbling,” Gerber said. “The Ben Vorster coaches are phenomenal, as their passion, energy and technical abilities are clear to see. The boys did really well, and all the primary schools must be commended on the concentration, discipline and great character these young players showed.” After the session, the boys enjoyed a nice cool down in the swimming pool as their dads and coaches stayed behind for a couple of ‘cold ones’ and some tasty steaks on the braai whilst watching the Springboks thrash Scotland. Gerber was also full of praise for all the parents for investing in their boys’ life and offering the opportunity to experience a high-performance program. A further token of appreciation goes to USN, the school’s new main sponsor for 2022, for the sports drinks and health bars. Lastly but certainly not the least, to BB Motors Tzaneen for sponsoring the meat for the braai.
