Kruger Park a busy poacher’s highway
Kruger National Park has become the chosen route for a poaching syndicate dealing in livestock acquired off the farms bordering the park. The local police chief has acknowledged this but shifted part of the blame onto the farmers themselves. Read the story on page 2.

■ Billy Sibuyi A video that has gone viral of a bull elephant attacking an open vehicle outside Hoedspruit carrying instructors and trainees has seemingly caused a stir amongst the ‘most experienced’. In the video widely circulated across social media, an elephant is seen storming a safari vehicle carrying field guides and trackers from Eco/training at Selati Game Reserve just outside Hoedspruit on Sunday, 28th of November. EcoTraining confirmed via a press release that nobody was injured, moreover stated that the elephant bull was experiencing must, a periodic condition in bull elephants depicted by highly aggressive actions and accompanied by a rise in reproductive hormones. Experts in conservation have weighed in on the attack with some saying both the trainees and instructors failed to do a full analysis of the animal behavior, hence the attack from the elephant. Budzatja Ngobeni, a field guide in a reserve in Limpopo told Bulletin that the turn of events were amateurish. “We deal with elephants of the same behavior daily for many years now, why have we never got hit, animal behavior analysis is key. Well, I guess now they learned behavior analysis the practical way,” he stated. Another conservationist said that the positioning of the vehicle
was incorrect as the driver even struggled to reverse. Another guide said that he regarded the incident as a “totally bad guiding and training experience”. In a statement EcoTraining stated that the instructors and trainees came across a breeding herd of elephants and the vehicle stopped to observe the elephants and give them a chance to settle down. “An elephant bull, who was with the breeding herd, mock charged the vehicle,” said the statement. According to them the elephant bull mock charged again, and according to conservationists, this was when they should have backed off immediately. It was not all doom and gloom for the trainees who were terrified out of their lives as once the vehicle had come to a standstill, as they were signaled to move to the second vehicle that was parked in proximity, filming the ordeal. “EcoTraining instructors that accompanied the trainees have more than 25 years of experience in the field,” said the statement. The General Manager of Selati Game Reserve, Bryan Havemann, was contacted shortly after the incident and went to the scene to assess the situation. Havemann was thankful that none of the people on the vehicle were injured although the vehicle was damaged. EcoTraining said that all the people involved in the incident have received professional counseling after the incident.

Farmers from villages bordering the Kruger National Park (KNP) say an immense poaching syndicate has declared war on them by stealing their livestock and smuggling it through the Kruger to Mozambique. These farmers, mainly from Saselani in Limpopo, assert that the poachers use either the Punda Maria or Pafuri Gates as an entry and exit point. Aron Chauke, the leader of livestock farmers on the border of KNP, said that these poachers herd their livestock through the Kruger and into Mozambique, and that at one point they fled leaving behind more than 50 cattle at the Pafuri border fence after being spotted by rangers. “We had to get back stolen cattle from the Kruger and sometimes they cut up these animals for ease of smuggling or to sell to community members at R250 per 25-liter bucket,” explained Chauke. “These criminals come from outside and are given houses in our communities and after a few days of residing they steal our cows,” continued Chauke. In the month of October and November alone, more than 15 families fell victim to the notorious syndicate which is also accused of selling wild meat at a very low price in the communities surrounding the park and as far as Phalaborwa. Caswell Rihlampo, John Maganyi, Samaul Maluleke, and Sam Chauke lost a combined 22 cattle no less than two weeks ago. The station commander of the Saselani Police Station, Lt Col Hlekani Maluleke, confirmed
dave@rescue911.co.za
that there were indeed cases of cattle theft in the area but she attributed it to the lack of caretakers. “They are not giving us the names of these poachers, we only have one name and we have been hunting that guy down. Another thing is that these farmers do not lock up their cattle and that’s how they get stolen,” she told Bulletin. SANParks spokesperson, Isaac Phaahla, said that the park was aware of the livestock which was found in the Kruger. However, he urged community members to assist the Environmental Crime Investigators (ECI) to stop the syndicate by bringing forward information to them. SANParks, Phalaborwa-based environmental investigator, Andrew Lumba, detailed that the main challenge they faced as the ECI was that community members were not forth coming with information. “We need to work together, to bring this syndicates down,” he mentioned.

Another Tzaneen CBD building razed by fire ■ Joe Dreyer A fire broke out in the early hours of yesterday morning (Thursday, 2nd of December) and completely engulfed the Makuramah Meat and Eat supermarket. The business, which is owned by foreign nationals, is situated behind Boxer and opposite the bus rank at Tzaneng Mall. It is not certain at this stage how the fire started, but it is speculated that one of the bread ovens could have caused a short and set the area alight. An employee at the scene alleged that the shop had no fire extinguishers and that this is the reason the fire spread out of control. Because there are no regular inspections conducted by the GTM’s
health inspectors, many buildings in the CBD are not operating in accordance with the Operational Health and Safety (OHS) Act. This is a major part of the reason there have been so many fires in the CBD in the last two years. The owners of the building could not be reached for comment at the time of going to print and neither could the shopkeepers. We do know that an investigation into the exact cause of the fire has been launched and we understand that there were no injuries in the blaze. We have sent an inquiry to the GTM regarding the inspection schedule of their health inspectors. ***Note: It appears to me that the so-called laws of the land here in Lim-
popo only apply to the selected majority. There are many shop owners in town who spend most of their revenue attempting to comply to the laws regarding health and safety or risk the department closing their doors. This, whilst outside their business, on the pavement, a street vendor operates without OHSA compliance, without COVID measures, without even basic hygiene – and without fear of persecution. When was the last time an inspector from the municipality came around and asked to see the dates on your fire extinguishers? When was the last time a hawker was threatened with closure because he or she did not have a sanitizer station for clients at their table? We are fooling ourselves if we believe this to be a free and fair market. This is segregation on a grand, and uber corrupt scale.
Poaching: A wild dog and its illegal “collar” ■ Billy Sibuyi State veterinarian Dr Louis van Schalkwyk, was out on a mission to change a collar on one of the wild dogs in a pack they had been monitoring when he came across a gruesome sight. One of the dogs in the pack had, what appeared to be, a snare wrapped so tightly across its neck that it was nearly decapitated. The dog was caught by a snare and because he had tried so hard to free himself from it, it went tighter and tighter the more he forced himself out. Eventually when the snare had been tight around its neck and started cutting through, he managed to bite it off from the tree, damaging his teeth in the process, and left the scene. It is estimated that the animal had been walking around with the snare cutting into its neck for more than 1000 hours when the vets came across it. Speculations are that Mozambican nationals crossing into the park, and locals living on its borders could be the ones setting up these snares. SANParks ranger, Dalton Mabasa said snaring was the harshest method poachers used to kill animals. He said that most snares are removed during winter as poachers know that the park is dry during that time, and they set traps along

the paths leading to a water reservoir. Mabasa explained that some of these poachers die in the process. “In one incident a poacher was killed by a buffalo when he returned to inspect his snare and found the animal there. He thought it was dead, but it was not. It killed him instead and we found him dead at the scene,” explained Mabasa. A collaborative and innovative conservation project to conserve the Endangered African Wild Dog (AWD), also known as the painted dog in the Greater Kruger Region, was implemented to help manage the man-made threats they may encounter. Unless one relies on opportunistic sightings, a tool is required to locate these wide-ranging animals and that is why the park collared the dogs as tracking collars are one of the most common tools used to monitor the movement and locate wildlife remotely. According to information on the EWT website when a dog is spotted, that location data is recorded, stored onboard, and transmitted via a network of satellite or ground-based receivers which process the data and relay this information to a central database. GPS collars which weigh approximately 450 grams or 2% of the dog’s body weight cost around R65 000 each and allows the conservationist
to obtain data on movements, determine home ranges, record behavioral data, and improve reaction time in follow up actions to mitigate potential threats.

Warrior wenches and silly squires feast at Boma ■ Roelof de Jonge
The traditional Medieval Celebration made a welcome return at the Boma at Warriors on Saturday evening. Previously it served as a celebration of the Warriors graduation ceremony. On Saturday though, it was held for the public to celebrate life, Medieval style. Guests were obligated to dress accordingly with King Never Ready (Rudi) and Queen Every Ready (René) Viljoen welcoming them upon arrival with a medieval potion. Francois van Schalkwyk, owner of the Boma at Warriors, said the whole idea was to lure people out of their homes, to come and enjoy a night of live entertainment, good food and company. Local band Rock Regime provided some entertainment for the evening in the form of good blues and legendary rock. Companies booked tables for their teams and employed the evening as express year-end functions which provided some entertainment of a different kind at times. The rules were simple; no utensils allowed to dine with and should you require salt for your meat, you would do well to ask permission for a morsel of the valuable commodity from either the King or the Queen. The same rule applied to use the ablution facilities; men were to ask the Queen for permission to point their Percy to the porcelain while women were to ask the King. Wenches and basnicks were at the beck and call of the guests throughout the evening, and regularly reminded them of the rule against applauding which was seen as a signal of romantic availability. Guests were only permitted to show approval of the band’s performance by banging loudly with their fists on the tables. “The proceeds of the event were utilized for the business and its employees. It has really helped to ease the financial strain and we appreciate the support and attendance from each person”, said van Schalkwyk. Wouter Pretorius

Adele’s masks headed to Pinetown ■ Roelof de Jonge Adele Dey’s facemasks for people hard of hearing, are making inroads with orders coming in from as far as Pinetown in KwaZulu-Natal. When Bulletin last spoke with her two weeks ago, she was awaiting a consignment of disposable masks to be decorated for distribution along with a range of washable one’s she had in stock. The masks have since arrived and husband Rodney sprung into action decorating them with his expert artist’s hand. Dey, who has a hearing defect herself, caught onto the idea of creating these facemasks when she heard about a deaf customer who once went to a local store and because of the face masks mandate, the deaf can no longer read lips, which means they cannot communicate. Dey who also frequented the store, was informed about the deaf customer’s predicament. Being caught in this situation herself on a regular basis she devised the brilliant plan of printing warning labels on the masks to alert other people of the wearer’s plight. “The value of these masks is for the person who will find them useful. The masks mute sound. And it hides the mouth which makes it even more difficult for us with hearing difficulties, as we mostly need to see the mouth to follow a conversation. With the masks is it an impossible task” Dey is not into the idea of making a profit out of the proceeds of selling these masks. Instead, the proceeds will go straight back

IN THE CHAIR WITH DR RUAN RADEMEYER
Staying healthy during the festive season The festive season is fast approaching and on behalf of the Tzaneen Dental Studio team I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a wonderful 2022. May you all stay safe and healthy over the coming weeks. I thought it a good idea to provide some tips on keeping your teeth and body healthy over the coming weeks. • Drink plenty of water Water will help rinse food particles and bacteria from your teeth and reduce the risk of tooth decay. Choosing water over sugar drinks will also decrease your overall sugar intake. • Beware of the buffet Constantly snacking is much worse for your teeth than sticking to set mealtimes. When snacking, try tooth-friendly options such as veggies or cheese. • The Advent Calendar Swap the sugary treats within an advent calendar with toys to protect the teeth of the young ones. • Don’t use your teeth to cut tape Using teeth as tools is a common cause of dental emergencies over the holidays. Ripping presents and tape with your teeth may save some time, but may also lead to chipping or breaking of your teeth. • Choose dark chocolate over milk chocolate and sticky toffee
Smouskous Classifieds Services Dienste
Avoiding sweets completely over the holidays is unrealistic, but you can minimize the risk to your teeth by avoiding hard candies that can crack teeth or sticky sweets that cling to your teeth for an extended period of time. • Don’t neglect your regular oral hygiene routine The holidays can easily throw us off balance, neglecting our oral hygiene, causing serious long term dental problems. Make sure you brush your teeth twice per day for 2 minutes each time and floss between the teeth at least once per day. • Pack the essentials when travelling Remember to pack all the oral hygiene essentials when you pack your suitcase. These include toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, mouth wash as well as any current treatments (e.g. Retainers, Grinding plate etc). When it comes to anything in life, including your holiday dental care, prevention is better than treatment. Developing the correct dental care routine is the best way to preserve your teeth this festive season. Happy holidays, Dr Ruan Rademeyer

Banyana coach visits Phalaborwa’s women’s league ■ Billy Sibuyi No less than a week after the first women’s football league was launched in Phalaborwa, the Banyana Banyana National Team Coach, Desiree Ellis, visited the small town to look at the next generation of talent. Ellis, who a month ago, was selected to a 21-person FIFA Technical Advisory Group which has been tasked to advance and grow women’s football, appreciated the fact Phalaborwa had launched a women’s league. The Ba-Phalaborwa’s launch of its first women’s football league will pave a way for girls with aspirations of turning professional and rubbing shoulders with other professionals from across the world. According to the chairperson of the Ba-Phalaborwa SAFA, Mhlongo Gazita, they have had this dream of getting women football off the ground for many years. He told Bulletin that SAFA Ba-Phalaborwa appreciated the efforts by Victoria Mahomane, the women’s football coordinator, who initiated the project by identifying all women football teams throughout the Ba-Phalaborwa municipality and influenced them to register for participation in this league. The launch was blessed by the presence of 10 women’s football teams which, for the first time in the history of SAFA Ba-Phalaborwa, played their very first cluster league matches. Joubert wen tydrenkroon in styl ■ Roelof de Jonge
Joubert en van Heerden was letterlik so tuis soos visse in water.
