No smiles this year Two years after government needed three weeks to curb the spread of the virus, South Africans are still not able to enjoy Christmas in the way it was intended. There was a mass vaccination drive, people were bribed with R200 and even the chance to win holidays abroad if they “gave their arm for the greater good” and government mandated mask wearing and sanitizing. None of these scientific measures proved effective. The latest news is that the new variant, Omicron, has rendered some of the vaccines useless. Nevertheless, there is always love and giving, and that, no mask can hide.
No lights are on but someone’s home
Following the ongoing power outages experienced across the municipality, and a contradicting statement by the Electrical Engineering Services Chief, Sam Lelope, residents and taxpayers are wondering whether the man in charge is truly in touch with what is happening on the ground. Page 3

different countries through his work. Nhlanhla Khoza owns his own plumbing company. He studied computer science at the University of Limpopo and afterwards decided to start his own business. Seeing his mother struggle to provide for him and his siblings motivated him to persevere and become successful, despite his poor background. The final speaker, Siyani Marima from Anova, is a professional nurse, human resource manager, author and farmer, who also conducts external liaison. Not only was she the first person to complete matric in her family, have a qualification and buy her own car, but she has also travelled extensively abroad. All five speakers were united in their advice to pupils to complete matric, stay focused and persevere in following their dreams. CHoiCe Trust would like to take this opportunity to thank the speakers for sharing their stories and bringing them hope.
CHoiCe Trust, in collaboration with local business, held two career days to encourage grade 11 and grade 12 pupils that through hard work, determination and commitment nothing can stand in their way of pursuing a successful career. The first event took place at Mawhawha Secondary School on the 30th of November, and the second event at Sevenga High School on the 2nd of December. The speakers motivated the students to complete their high school careers and to better equip themselves for the working environment. They shared their journeys of their own successes and failures, reaffirming that a person’s future is determined by themselves. Tini Kalan, from Premjees Tzaneen, shared his journey on how he realized at a young age that his interest lies in business and, through the help of his teachers, became an entrepreneur and a respected businessman. Sindile Khoza from DuRoi Nursery shared her experience from starting to work after matric as a general worker and rising through the ranks to become a nursery manager through hard work and dedication. Her work did not go unnoticed by DuRoi and the Department of Agriculture. She participated in a competition for nursery managers, winning it at national level. From being one of nine children raised by a single mother, Khoza was able to send her own son to university with the money she won at the competition. Another employee from DuRoi, Rekki Maponya, grew up in an extremely marginalized environment and did not have the opportunity to attend school, but started as a general worker at DuRoi. He completed his ABET course and, through hard work and perseverance, became fluent in Afrikaans and English. Today, he is a production manager at DuRoi and has travelled to The motivational speakers were Nhlanhla Khoza, Rekki Maponya, Sindile Khoza and Siyani Marima. Absent: Tini Kalan.

A motorbike club from Tzaneen, Chrome Soldiers, raised funds for Phalaborwa after finding the ‘Nita Barnard Helpmekaar’ page on Facebook and contacted her with an offer to bring food for this festive season to people who have been struggling during Covid months. Barnard then contacted Afriforum’s, Saartjie Matthysen, who, after a short meeting with her chairperson, Hardus Fourie, decided that they would help with a venue and contribute to the event. Afriforum, Spar and Makhoma Butchery Phalaborwa were amongst the donors on the day and both the DA ward councilors of ward 11 and
12, Sybrandt de Beer, and Lonika Booysen were present. Pastor Biewenga, from Hoedspruit, said that the aim of Chrome Soldiers was to reach out to more and touch the lives of more people by next year. Casper Badenhorst, from Bougainvillapark Retirement Home thanked everybody involved. He said they welcomed the new councilor, Lonika Booysen. Matthysen said that Bougainvilla Park residents were happy to share with others who were less fortunate as they felt fortunate to have a roof with electricity and sometimes water depending on the municipality. Hardus Fourie and Matthysen also delivered green peppers, cucumbers, and potatoes to the Frailcare Centrum.

Does the chief really know what’s happening? ■ Joe Dreyer According to the Electrical Chief at the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Sam Lelope, the rumours that there were not enough vehicles for the technicians to attend to numerous faults on the power grid this past week, were not true. Large parts of Tzaneen, Letsitele and Haenertsburg were left without power on Monday and Tuesday after Eskom’s area-wide shut down on Sunday for maintenance. Sunday’s scheduled outage commenced at 06:00 and was meant to be restored by 18:00 but the lights were back on at 18:15, much to the delight of all residents. That joy was short lived however as not 20 min-
Thapelo Matlala handing over one of the NP300’s in 2018.
utes later the power was out again. It came back on 20 minutes or so after that and went off again less than 10 minutes later. This continued until just after 19:00 that evening before it appeared as though the grid had been stabilized. Monday and Tuesday saw outages in various suburbs with technicians tending to cable faults. When no feedback was given to the residents on the progress of their fault repairs after hours without power on Tuesday, Ward Councillor Chrizelle Dreyer and PR Councillor André Moss, contacted the control room after failing on numerous attempts to reach any of the electrical department’s management on any of their listed numbers. When the control room could not be reached on the landline, the councillors contacted the technicians on their listed numbers who then informed them that there were not enough vehicles for them to tend to all the faults in some of the areas. Some residents were told the same when they too contacted the technicians. Reportedly one of the vehicles was in the Politsi area, one vehicle was in the Letsitele area, another vehicle was in Tzaneen town whilst another was tending to a fault in Lushof. The technicians also claimed that there were vehicles parked at a local car dealership service department, which had already been serviced, but not delivered due to payment not having been made. This meant that of the seven vehicles available to the technical team, only four were in operation. Councillor Dreyer then drove to the GTM offices to speak to the acting municipal manager Alec Nkuna. Nkuna was not available, but his secretary contacted Sam Lelope, the director of electrical engineering
services who then called Dreyer a short while later. Lelope denied that there were not enough vehicles for his technicians and said that it was merely a rumour that two vehicles were awaiting payment at a local workshop. He said that there were seven working vehicles available for his team to do their work. He agreed that communication between the control room and the community members was lacking and that they would have to find an easier way to improve communication between the GTM and their clients. In the meantime, Bulletin sent an inquiry to the spokesperson of the GTM, Vutivi Makhubele. “There are two GTM vehicles at BB Motors, of which one awaits authorisation to be released by the service provider because the vehicle is still under warranty and the municipality is not liable for the payment,” she said in her response. “The other vehicle awaits an order which is currently being processed by finance, this is a supply chain procedure that the municipality is required to follow before affecting payments.” Does this mean that the report Lelope claimed he was reading whilst speaking to the councillor was factually incorrect, or perhaps outdated? Or is the chief of the electrical department out of touch with what is truly going on in his department? Residents are hot under the collars because of his reluctance to engage them on any of the issues personally, and his refusal to become involved on any of the fault reporting groups. Bulletin has on numerous occasions in the past attempted to interview Lelope, but each time we have been denied an interview and our questions are directed to the spokesperson.
Another death at PMC The Lion Man’s case ■ postponed to 2022 exact cause of what is the third fatal accident in the last three years at the mine. In 2018, five miners were burnt to death after a conveyor belt caught fire underground. This has now led to the industry to pledge to take steps to improve safety, after mining fatalities in South Africa increased over the last two years successively. According to the Minerals Council of South Africa (MCSA) as of December this year, 72 miners have died in South African mines compared to 2020 where the industry saw 60 fatalities, compared to 51 the previous year. The spokesperson for PMC, Abby Ledwaba, confirmed the accident and said that at approximately 17:10 at the construction site, Lift II (new mine development) whereby Comfort Mnisi, a rigger, fell from a scaffolding ledger to the crusher rock box level. He explained that Mnisi was rescued by the mine’s proto team and brought to surface at approximately 19:15, and that Mnisi was admitted to Tzaneen

A 28-year-old contractor, Comfort Mnisi, died after falling 28 metres from the top of a scaffolding on the premises of the Palabora Copper mine (PMC) last week. The accident occurred on Tuesday evening, the 7th of December, reportedly whilst a safety officer, construction supervisor, and an engineer were on site. He was an employee of Multifab, a construction company contracted by PMC. Mnisi’s untimely death comes on the heels of that of Anaph Seemela, who died in a separate incident in October after he was crushed by a diverter car. This incident raised some eyebrows at the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) who issued the mine with a section 54 notice. A source at the mine told Bulletin that Mnisi was not properly strapped in whilst on top of the scaffolding which is in contravention of the safety regulations. The DMRE is establishing the

Mediclinic in a stable condition. “We have conducted an In-loco investigation, and this will be succeeded by a full investigation to be conducted by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy in conjunction with the management team and organized labor to establish the cause of the accident. The intention with the investigation is to establish the facts on the accident and ensure that we [can] develop interventions to avoid similar accidents in the future,” stated Ledwaba. The DMRE has issued instructions in terms of section 54 of the Mine Health and Safety Act, halting all operations involving working at heights and the use of lifting equipment. Furthermore, the employer was instructed to review the current safety management system employed at the mine. The management team which includes the engineer and supervisors have also been suspended from taking health and safety decisions at the mine.
■ Jeff Jackson The case of attempted murder against Hoedspruit farmer Mark Scott-Crossley was postponed in the Naphuno Magistrate court last week. The case which in the past had attracted community members supported by political parties, was this week not well attended barring a few leaders of the ANC and a handful of the red jumpsuit members. This a sequel to an incident several years ago where a farm worker from the adjacent farms in Hoedspruit was run over by a bakkie which was allegedly driven by Scott-Crossley. He had since been arrested after he handed himself over to police in Pretoria where he had fled to after the incident. He had since been denied bail when he appeared in court two years ago. The case has been followed closely by political parties and the ANC Youth League. Before the Covid-19 restrictions on movement and the gathering of people, the magistrate’s square was crowded with angry community members who were bussed into the court squares every time Scott-Crossley was set to appear. The result was usually protests in the streets before and after each appearance.
His appearance last week was attended by the councillors from the red brigade and the executive committee members of the ANCYL. After the postponement of the case to early next year, there was a meeting between the youth leaguers and the fighters. It was aimed at garnering more supporters for the coming appearance. Crossley made headlines several years ago after he allegedly threw workers from his farm into a lion enclosure.

The Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) National Rowing Squad attended their first training camp of the season at the idyllic Tzaneen Dam this past week. The rowing season runs from October to September each year. According to Grant Dodds, the technical performance manager of the team, they love training in Tzaneen and plan to be back in August next year before competing at the World Championships in the Czech Republic. The national squad has become a regular sight over the past few years as they travel to Tzaneen annually to take advantage of the idyllic conditions ahead of their major competitions. The teams have not been here in the last two years due to the low water levels and the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. “We are looking forward to setting a strong foundation for our season ahead under the watchful eye of our national head coach, Tiago Loureiro. Training on the serene waters of Tzaneen dam is ideal to lay this foundation,” said Dodds. The team and its management are thankful to their sponsors, RMB, for making this training camp possible. how difficult it is to get access to the dam, especially from the Jetty 3 entrance. The Tzaneen Municipality however provided the SA squad access to the dam and Jetty 3 to launch. Dodds said thanks to the municipality they could access the dam without any problems. Dodds also gave their gratitude to Etienne van Wyngaardt and his team for hosting them at Health and Fitness Tzaneen Gym. “Freda Dry also assisted us with physiotherapy during our training camp, so you can see, it was a full town involvement.” “We have assembled a young team of senior and u/23 athletes as we start our campaign to Paris 2024. We only had two returning Olympic athletes, Kirsten Macdonald and Sandro Torrente, with us at this camp and expect to have more of them returning to the team in January.” The team’s goal during this training camp was to complete a large volume of training. The rowers covered about 20km per session and trained up to three times per day. The team’s selections will be concluded in May 2022 and they are currently preparing for two events, namely the RMB National Sprint Championships at Victoria Lake Club in Germiston at the end of January, and the RMB Buffalo Regatta in East London in mid-February.
