Swimming pool has no lifeguards (again)
According to the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Tzaneen’s public swimming pool is in working condition but because there are no lifeguards, it cannot be opened to the public., but galas can be held. Similarly, Jetty 3 is inexplicably still closed to the public. We asked the municipality why. More next week.

■ Joe Dreyer After the “surprise” resignation of the municipal manager for the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality on the last day of December last year, the mayor, Merriam Malatji promised that essential service delivery would continue exactly as it did before. It appears the mayor’s statement was on point, as the sewerage still flows through the streets of the once beautiful town, exactly as it did in the time before Maite Moakamela resigned. The Municipality offered no explanation for Moakamela’s resignation but was quick to publish the news of the appointment of Dr Kgoshi Lucas Pilusa as acting municipal manager in her place. Pilusa will be acting for three months until March and the position has since been advertised. Shockingly, mayor Malatji stated over social media that Moakamela left the municipality in “good shape” and even went as far as thanking her for her “incomparable contribution” saying that the council had “learnt so much from her work ethics, administrative and managerial skills.” This statement caused a volley of comments from the residents who felt insulted by the bold statement, especially after they (the residents) have had to cleanup the town themselves and even patch the many potholes at their own cost. In fact, two residents have made the headlines many times for selflessly doing the municipality’s work without payment or even a thank you from the council. Marietjie Maré established a cleanup team which has been cleaning the sidewalks, walk ways and gardens around Phalaborwa’s entrances and CBD for the last three years while a young man by the name of Clifford Tumelo

and his team were featured on national television for the potholes they have been repairing since 2020. At the time of going to print yesterday afternoon, at least seven streets including, Park Street, Nollie Bosman, Frans du Toit, and Acacia Avenue, were flooded with sewerage. Those who live in these streets have been complaining about the sewerage for more than a year and nothing has been done to rectify the situation. The municipality claimed they could not access the manholes because of the heavy foliage which resulted in the drastic measure of completely bulldozing entire sections of bush, leaving neighbourhoods resembling deserts. The exaggerated bush clearings helped as the manholes were easily accessible and teams did unblock the system on a few occasions, but because of a lack of proper maintenance on behalf of the municipality, those areas are once again so overgrown, the manhole are no longer visible. And this was during the time of Moakamela. Residents have dug trenches next to their homes for the sewage to flow out of their yard, and Bulletin reported a few times on the school for special needs children, Frangipani, which had to close its doors because of sewerage flooding into the building. That’s how good the essential service delivery was, and currently is. The ward councilor, Sybrandt de Beer, said that he has also tried to get assistance from the municipality, but with no luck. As things stand, the municipality still has the Hawks investigation into alleged tender fraud hanging over their heads and it does not appear as though anything related to service delivery will be rectified anytime soon.
Results will not be published ■ Billy Sibuyi The Department of Basic Education has announced that the annual matric exam results will no longer be published on media platforms. This is in line with the recently introduced Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). ***Editor’s Comment: Since the introduction of this new act, I have personally experienced a drastic increase in the number of automated sales messages and phone calls from call centres “on behalf of my bank”. Clearly this new act was not as much a deterrent as it was a challenge. This has in turn caused the department to be slammed by the media industry, describing the government’s decision as absurd. In a statement, the department said that publishing personal information online would be a contravention of the POPI Act, although, traditionally, the matric results were made widely available with students identified through their ID numbers. To comply with the provisions of the POPIA, the usual practice of publishing the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results on public platforms will therefore not occur for 2021. “As was also the practice in previous years, all learners will be required to obtain their statement of results from the schools they attended. In this way, every learner’s personal information with regards to the outcome of their National Senior Certificate exam will be protected,” the department said in a statement. For two years in a row, matric results were delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic, which interrupted teaching, the school timetable, learning, and the release of results. Last year results for the class of 2020 were released two months into the year, on the 23rd February and this year they will only be published on 21 January 2022. Angie-Motshekga
Dop, dagga leads to rape ■ Billy Sibuyi
A police sergeant stationed at the Phalaborwa SAPS was suspended after allegedly supplying liquor and marijuana to the inmates in the police holding cells on New Year’s Eve. After consuming the illicit substances, the intoxicated inmates reportedly started assaulting and raping the other inmates in the cells. According to the police, six counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) and two counts of rape were opened. However, the sergeant responsible for the inmates’ intoxication was not arrested as according to the Police spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, “no criminal case was opened against the sergeant, and he was therefore not arrested. He was however suspended in accordance with our internal disciplinary processes.” According to Mojapelo two suspects aged 23 and 39, one in custody for murder, and the other for robbery, were subsequently arrested and charged with rape and assault GBH. The inmates appeared in the Phalaborwa Magistrate court last week Friday, the 7th of January, and their cases were postponed to next week, the 18th of January.

New History curricula for schools imminent ■ Joe Dreyer
Following the disastrous two-year panic that played absolute havoc on the futures of especially foundation phase pupils in schools across the country, the new year seems to promise some form of return to stability. Public schools in the Mopani District reopened this week after the December break and the local schools saw a bunch of brighteyed and bushy-tailed new faces stream into their classrooms. Tzaneen Primary registered the largest number of new Grade 1’s with a total of 182 7-year-olds reporting for active duty on Wednesday with a further 80 pupils still on a waiting list. Amid the confusion associated with the start of a new school year, traffic around Tzaneen Primary was an understated chaotic experience, nevertheless, the scholar patrol and teachers managed to ensure no accidents on the day. The three smaller schools in the area also recorded new grade 1 conscripts. Duiwelskloof Primary and Unicorn Preparatory School are both full to capacity after registering 70 and 48 new scholars respectively. In Letsitele, Dr Annecke Primary registered a total of 66 new learners, in Hoedspruit a total of 39 new faces reported for duty at Mariepskop Primary whilst Laerskool Phalaborwa-Noord (Rooiskool) added 68 new names to their class lists. In the meantime, Angie Motshekga, Minister in the Department of Basic Education (DBE) said it was going to take hard work to “reboot the system and get it back on track again” referring to the devastating effects the last two years have had on the education of the country’s children. She addressed the issue of vaccinating school goers as young as 12-years of age and said that the program will kick off in January this year. Late last year, the Department of Health announced that vaccines were available for young people aged 12 years and above. They could not run the programme in schools at the time, as the Sector was seized with end-of-
the-year assessments and examinations and so they decided to defer the vaccination of learners to January this year. “On Tuesday, the departments of Health and Basic Education met to consider a vaccination plan, insofar as it affects learners in school. It was agreed that we need to increase the vaccination for everybody eligible. We have agreed to prioritize an advocacy campaign, to encourage eligible people – both adults and learners of eligible age, to go get their jabs,” Motshekga said. “Misinformation and hesitancy still pose a huge challenge; hence we really need to work hard, to explain the benefits of vaccinating. We need to raise awareness and increase literacy; and address false and fake news regarding the vaccination.” She continued to say that for education personnel, vaccination sites were open and they did not have to make prior bookings as their details were already on the system. “We need to clarify that we are not vaccinating in school yet, because the Department of Health does not have the capacity to be in all schools. We will use existing sites for vaccination even for the 12-yearolds and above. Let me emphasize that vaccination is voluntary.” Many parents have expressed concern over the idea that their 12-year-old child will be able to make the decision to take the vaccine without parental consent. This, coupled with peer pressure and reports that certain teachers were telling their classes that those who refuse the vaccine were a danger to their parents, has led to intense pushback by the parents. Bulletin is in possession of a list of all the teachers in the Mopani district who went for their vaccination during the Departments’ drive last year and on this list there were many local Angie Motshekga

teachers who refused the vaccine for various valid reasons which included the most valid of all – freedom of choice. As the year starts this week, more and more information is being released by the World Health Organization and the Centre for Diseases Control which point to the new variant “Omicron” as being less severe than its preceding variants. This bodes well for a return to normality. In other news the DBE updated on the progress regarding the overhaul of the History Curriculum in schools. “The History Ministerial Task Team (MTT) is working on finalizing the overhaul of the History curriculum in Grades 4-12. The topics for Grades 4-9 have been finalized; and topics for Grades 10-12 will be refined and finalized this year,” said Motshekga. “There were consultations held by the MTT with a reference team of History teachers and curriculum advisors in 2019 (Grades 4-9) and 2021 (Grades 10-12), on the proposed topics, concepts, skills and forms of assessment that must be included in the revised History curriculum.” Broader consultations with relevant stakeholders will be conducted during this year and will be followed by the submission of the draft revised History curriculum to Umalusi for evaluation and appraisal, to determine if the revised History curriculum meets the curriculum development and design standards. In 2015, Motshekga appointed the Ministerial History Task Team to, among other things, review the history curriculum taught in schools and make recommendations. The task team released their report in February 2018 and they noted was that the content taught in schools was “sanitized”. One of the recommendations in the report was that history should be made compulsory in grades 10-12. “The major challenge now, which is a massive exercise, is around the rewriting of history,” the Minister added. “Even the task team said, ‘you can’t present the current history as it is, so it has to be rewritten.” She said they had to find money for new textbooks and teachers would have to be retrained. The task team has been consulting historians, archaeologists, linguists, researchers and academics during its work on developing a new content for History. It has also been recommended that History should be a stand-alone subject and no longer be presented as part of life orientation.

The mountain’s Culture Vulture leaves her nest ■ Roelof de Jonge If you were in primary school in Tzaneen at any time in the last five decades you would know Tannie Marty Reynolds. The 77-year-old retired teacher taught many children from various schools in this area over the course of half a century. As you read this, she is hard at work packing up her life on the Whispering Waters farm up in Agatha from where she will be moving to spend her golden years with her children in Gauteng. Marty spent 47 years on that farm, but with the continuous power cuts, the crime and her age, her family decided that she would have a better quality of life under different circumstances. “I am leaving to live in Gauteng. My grandchild, Greg, and my daughter Natalie informed me on their last visit here during the past holiday, that I will be moving to live with them. Since my son
Mark passed away, I had been living alone here. It is just not a safe place here anymore and an elderly person like me living all by myself here worries my family”. Her son, Mark, nicknamed his mom the ‘Recycled Teenager’ (for always being so young at heart). The two of them lived on the farm until Mark passed away in August 2017 at the age of 43. On the wall at the back door, she pointed proudly at the four paintings Mark created for her 70th birthday. She struggled to hold back the tears as she discussed the craftmanship from her talented artist son. After his passing, his ashes were brought back to the farm. No matter how sad it is for Reynolds to leave her son’s remains behind, she fully understands that Whispering Waters was his happy place. Reynolds taught generations of children, literally, as a teacher at Tzaneen Primary, Unicorn Prepara-

tory School, Gravelotte Primary and PEPPS in Modjadji amongst others. She arrived in Tzaneen in 1958 as a child. After school she studied to become a teacher where she first started at Tzaneen Primary in 1969 until 1971. She continued her career at Unicorn Preparatory School that same year. After a 30-year tenure at Unicorn, the then headmaster of Tzaneen Primary, Vic Rijnen, lured her back to the Larries as an English teacher until she retired in 2014 at the age of 70. Reynolds will fondly remember the friendliness of Tzaneen’s residents. Whenever she frequents town, she will be stopped to be greeted by former colleagues, learners and friends by her nickname, “Mrs. R” which the pupils gave her after she so eagerly dished out nicknames to all who crossed the threshold of her classroom. In fact, she was famous for nicknaming children according to their surnames. The children she has taught over the years
until this day still uses their nicknames to remind her who they were if she can’t remember them. “For example, Van Zyl became Van Vlees, Du Plessis children were Do-Play-Cee and for the Venter surname I called them “Venstertjie”. The children loved it. I remember a learner that once asked me what Velcro was, and after a lengthy explanation I named him Girtsie after the sound the Velcro makes when you pull the two sides apart.” But Marty was known by various names afforded to her by colleagues and others she had regular dealings with. The names she recalled during her teaching career span from The Dragon, Culture Vulture and Fresh Air Fanatic. “What I will miss most about Tzaneen will be the wide-open spaces, nature and the quietness of living on the farm. The quality of life in this area, the amazing friends and colleagues I will also sorely miss, not to mention Mark’s beautiful garden and artistic creations in and around our home.”

Phalaborwa Football Club (PFC) maintained their unbeaten run in their league with a 3-0 victory at Impala Park Stadium on Sunday, the 9th of January. This despite being reduced to 10 men in the first half when their number 7 was shown a straight red card for man-handling an opposition player. Team captain, Trevor Malatji, found the back of the net before his teammate was dismissed in the 20th minute and later added another goal in the second half. Thabang Motau wrapped it up late in the second half with another beautiful goal. Phalaborwa FC have 12 points after four games after nearest rival Majeje Football Club, suffered their first defeat against the mighty local ballers. They now sit on nine points after four games. Malatji gave the home team a dream start when he fired a powerful shot home from Thami Mavimbela’s assist. Malatji got his brace and made it 2-0 in the 50th minute of the game, before Motua wrapped it up with a classical finisher, a curler from outside the box. The 23-year-old Solly Lepulana, a product of the Phalaborwa Football Club youth ranks, told Bulletin that it was the first game at home
for this year’s campaign with a pavilion filled with much-needed spectators. “We wholeheartedly love seeing our fans because they lift our spirits high. It has become a tradition to not drop points at home. We respect the opposition and we prepared tactically and technically very well in advance. We proved our resilience despite playing majority of the game man down however, that did not stop us, as we showed character and a fighting spirit from the first minute untill the very last and we were rewarded with a much-deserved clean sheet,” stated Lepulana. He explained that the opposition team unleashed their attacks which were deadly on the transition and often had quick counter attacks. The founder and manager of Phalaborwa FC, Kala Manyama, said that with a man down it was not easy as they had to play on the back foot and thus, they had to sacrifice the attack and kept both the defense and midfield intact. “Four wins in four games is a very good start, but its too early to relax. We want to stay at the top, if possible, I mean in football you are working with different people, and we still must keep them consistent. We are still short of some players as some are students and are still at home. We just need to have depth in the squad, and we can compete with any team,” stated Manyama.

Why is Jetty 3 still closed? ■ Joe Dreyer Inexplicably the Jetty 3 facility remains closed to the public and all other access points to the Tzaneen dam is under lock and key. No explanation has been given and those wishing to use the facilities need to obtain a permit to do so. The permit incidentally is free. In the past the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) offered the Covid-19 pandemic as an excuse for not opening the facilities to the local fishermen and boaters. They stated that they did not have the manpower to open the facility and simultaneously ensure that all protocols were observed. This even though the only real control point comprises of a single security guard at the entrance gate armed with a clipboard and a dated thermometer. Other public areas such as the controversial public park which was fenced off without following protocols and with complete disregard to the bylaws, have been open to the public for more than a year and do not have any control procedures at the point of entry. Bulletin has learnt that the Jetty 3 facility is leased by the GTM and that the previous lessee was a lawyer who’s lease agreement has come to an end. This means that currently no individual or organization is leasing the facility. It also appears that there is absolutely no intention by the municipality to upgrade the dilapidated infrastructure at the site or at the very least conduct basic grounds maintenance. Last year we reported that a group of local businessmen which included the neighbourhood watch and various other security companies, put together a proposal which they presented to the Municipal Manager to lease the grounds. One of the businessmen, Muis Joubert, was very involved in the successful running of the Jetty 3 facility in the time before the Lions Clubhouse which was situated on the banks of the dam was razed by a fire. Joubert still holds the liquor license for Jetty 3. Their proposal included the maintenance and renovation of the grounds and infrastructure at their own cost, the provision of security and access control, and the general upkeep of the surrounding area also at their own cost. Still the proposal was ignored. We have requested feedback from the spokesperson for the GTM on the cost of leasing the facility, the duration of the contract, the process to follow and the reasoning behind keeping the facility closed to the public. At the time of going to print we had not received any answers as the relevant person was still on leave.

IN THE CHAIR WITH DR RUAN RADEMEYER
New Year’s Resolutions for Improved Dental Health On behalf of the Tzaneen Dental Studio Team, I would like to wish you all a happy 2022! The new year is the perfect time to come up with resolutions for improved Oral Health and healthy habits. Whether it is improving tooth cleaning techniques or having dental treatment, setting goals can be rewarding and motivating. Here is a basic Blueprint to follow to improve the status of your teeth and your health in general. 1. Follow a Healthy Diet – A healthy diet is always a good place to start to improve health. Your diet should be balanced and have sufficient amounts of carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats. You should also be getting enough vitamins and minerals through your diet. Follow a diet that is easy to follow and not too restrictive. A good option is the Mediterranean diet. Limit alcohol intake and make sure to consume enough water, at least 8 glasses per day. 2. Avoid Gum disease – Daily brushing and flossing will prevent Gum disease. For successful plaque removal you need to brush your teeth twice per day using a good toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste. Floss at least once per day between all your teeth to remove any food particles that are trapped between your teeth. 3. Professional Dental Cleaning – Plaque and calculus collect around the teeth, especially the inside of the lower front teeth and the outside of the upper molars. If it has been more than
six months since your last clean, you are due. The plaque and calculus will lead to gum disease with irreversible damage to the gum and bone surrounding the teeth. 4. Quit Tobacco – Stop using cigarettes and smokeless tobacco to improve overall health. 5. Improve the appearance of your smile – There are several ways to improve the appearance of your teeth including teeth whitening. For the best results, in-chair bleaching by a dentist is recommended. 6. Restore damaged teeth – The new year is the perfect time to complete any outstanding dental work. Crowns, Implants and fillings preserve tooth structure and help to maintain the alignment of the teeth. 7. Preserve Tooth Structure – Grinding is caused by stress, anxiety, sleep disorders, abnormal bite or teeth that are missing or out of alignment. Patients that grind their teeth may experience dull headaches, jaw soreness, painful or fractured teeth. Ask your dentist about solutions. Good luck with all your new year’s resolutions. If you are serious about improving your oral health in 2022, be sure to contact your Dentist as soon as possible. He or she will guide you in the right direction to attain all your goals. Limpopo Leopards maul Gryphons ■ Roelof de Jonge
The Limpopo Leopards Hockey Club had five teams that competed in the Pro Series Indoor (PSI) Inland National Hockey Championships in Gauteng. These championships took place from the 20th until the 22nd of December last year. The u/16 girls team showed their worth as they emerged as the top team in the B-section when they delivered a comprehensive beating to the Gauteng Gryphons B-side in a match that ended in a 4-1 victory for the Leopards. They won most of their matches enroute to the final, bar one game against the Tswane Titans Warriors which they lost 2-3. They beat the Gauteng Gryphons B team (4-3),
the Vultures (7-0), Tswane Titans Stars (5-1), the Pitbulls (4-1), the Rhinos (7-1), and the Bloem Brown Bears (2-1) to secure their spot in the finals. The u/18 Leopards’ female team also had an excellent outing to eventually finish third overall after beating the Bloem Brown Bears by 4-1. After the tournament two of the u/18 Limpopo Leopards players, namely Dineo Letsoalo and Zoë Bergmann, were selected for the PSI All Stars team that is destined to travel to Europe. The Leopards’ u/13 boys’ team won the B-section championship in 2020, and were promoted to the A-section of their age group. These Leopard cubs showed they have the teeth to compete in this section by again securing
The u/16 Limpopo Leopards team after winning the PSI Inland Championship: Front: Layla de Bruyn. Behind de Bruyn are Tanatswa Murasiranwa, Aluska Zaayman, Ashley Moreira and Jane Toerien. Back: Sharice Smit, Ammerie Janse van Vuuren, Anmari Grobler, Jannieke Kruger, assistant coach Wian Kruger and head coach Monique Scheepers.
a place in the final against the Tswane Titans. The team from Pretoria however, secured the crown by 3-1 in a thrilling encounter. The u/13 girls enjoyed the outing and gained valuable experience against the bigger city based established clubs. According to Tatenda Mabayah (Jayden), the franchise manager of the Limpopo Leopards Hockey Club, these excellent performances by all their club’s teams should be more than adequate to convince parents of the advantages of indoor hockey in skills development.
