The fact that the Greater Tzaneen Municipality have not yet opened the Tzaneen Dam and surrounding facilities to the public not only seems completely illogical but has now birthed a completely new problem. Because they cannot access the dam through conventional means, residents are now parking their vehicles near the Twin Bridges and walking to their favourite spots from there. Not surprisingly, the local traffic department has done little to put an end to this as is evidenced by their blatant ignoring of the illegal street hawkers along the R71 who construct their illegal structures against the very signposts prohibiting them from trading there. The GTM insist though, that they must keep popular access points to the dam, such as Jetty 3, closed to the public to keep accurate census data. Currently only permit holders can enter the dam, and only for launching their boats or fishing purposes. The permits are free of charge and the municipality said that the permits help them keep track of who enters the facility. Last week we were also informed that Jetty 3 will soon be advertised for potential lessees as soon as an evaluator determines the monthly rate to be charged.

Two Beitbridge security officials aged 31 and 35 were arrested on the 26th of January by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation members on allegations of corruption, theft of motor vehicle, contravention of Section 88 of the Custom and Excise Act 91 of 1974 and defeating the ends of justice. On the 18th of December last year, a suspicious international truck driver Kholisani Nkomo, was allegedly stopped by SARS officials at the Beitbridge port of entry search point. It is reported that the truck was impounded for a mandatory search, but the driver promised the officials a gratification for the release of the truck. While SARS officials were still busy with the process of impounding the truck, a Fidelity company security official allegedly approached and persuaded them to accept gratification, but they refused. The truck was eventually impounded and kept under the watch of another security official who allegedly abandoned his post which led to the disappearance of the truck. After an investigation by the Hawks in collaboration with SARS Anti-Corruption members, warrants of arrest were authorised against the suspects and they are expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s court this week. The truck driver, Nkomo, was already arrested on the 27th of December 2021 at Beitbridge Port of Entry on his way back from Gauteng Province. He was remanded in custody until released on R3 000 bail by the Musina Magistrate’s court on Wednesday, the 26th of January 2022.
SAPS robbers arrested ■ Joe Dreyer The suspects who were allegedly involved in the armed robbery of the Malamulele Police Station in November last year, were arrested by a special task team earlier this month. On the evening of the 21st of November last year, a group of armed suspects attacked and robbed the police officers on duty at the Malamulele Police Station after which they proceeded to rob nearby businesses and even blew up an ATM. During the robbery at the police station, the group of suspects robbed the on-duty police officers of their firearms before locking them in the back of a police van. Following this, the group proceeded to the station’s safe where they took R4 assault rifles, pistols, pump action shot guns and ammunition. Ten suspects were arrested on Thursday, the 19th of January 2022, following an intensive investigation conducted by the police task team. Seven of the suspects were found at their hideout at Medinyeng Village near Kgapane under the Bolobedu policing area outside Tzaneen, whilst the other three, were arrested at a lodge in the Dwarsloop area outside Bushbuckridge in the Mpumalanga province. This after information was received about these suspects intending to commit a series of ATM bombings in the Mpumalanga Province. Preliminary police investigations have positively linked the suspects to several ATM bombings and armed robberies in Limpopo, including the recent incident at a filling station near the Capricorn toll gate along the N1 North under the Saps Botlokwa Policing area. In this instance, a police Warrant Officer was shot and wounded. They were also positively linked with the incident where a Police Sergeant attached
to Botlokwa police station was robbed of his service pistol, R5 rifle and bulletproof vest. The team managed to recover a total of 11 firearms, ammunition, and explosives. Some of the firearms were robbed during the attack on Malamulele Police Station. The recovered arms cash included four R5 rifles, four pump action shotguns, three 9mm pistols, ammunition, police bulletproof vests, explosives, blasting cartridges, overalls, balaclavas, security uniforms, illicit cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash. Two motor vehicles, a Toyota bakkie and Mercedes Benz which were reportedly used to commit these crimes were also seized. Police investigations have already begun to circulate them to determine whether they were stolen or not. The suspects, aged between 30 and 48 will appear in different magistrates’ courts across the Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces facing charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, possession of explosives, conspiracy to commit crimes, attempted murders, robbery with aggravated circumstances, carjackings and attack on police station.
Suspected fraudster in Polokwane court
■ Jeff Jackson
A 43-year-old Polokwane man who is accused of fraud, appeared in the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Friday the 21st of January. Johannes Jakobus Louwrens allegedly sold farming equipment to a client, to the value of R121 125 in September last year. When the client took delivery of the equipment, he discovered that the machinery he purchased was faulty and returned it to the company. The victim later followed up on the progress with the repairs to his machinery, but could not reach Louwrens, and his money was never paid back to him. The matter was reported to the Hawk’s Serious Commercial Crime Investigation and following a successful investigation, Louwrens was served with a summons to appear in court that very same day. The case was postponed to the 4th of March 2022.

Minister Didiza impressed with Merensky ■ Jeff Jackson On Monday this week the Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza and her entourage paid a visit to the schools in the area. One of the highlights of her tour through the area was the address to the students and teachers at Merensky High School, more specifically the Agri-Merensky side of the school. The visit was titled a Back to School Campaign and was initiated by government. Didiza was accompanied by the MEC of Education in Limpopo, Polly Boshielo, Mopani Executive Mayor, Pule Shai, the Mayor of Greater Tzaneen, Gerson Malapisane, as well as Phillipine Modika, the Department of Education’s District Director of Mopani West and Felix Nomvela, Tzaneen Circuit Manager. In her keynote address, minister Didiza acknowledged Merensky High School as an established agricultural force in the education sector. She encouraged the pupils, as possible future role players in the agricultural sector, to pursue their dreams and emphasized how established agricultural schools like Agri-Merensky, could play a vital role in assisting the rural and developing agricultural schools through collaborative projects, to reach their own potential. She also spent some time touching on the subject of how these schools could help the farmers who were previously removed
from their land. The minister is of the view that the cooperation between government and established farming schools can assist these farmers in becoming settled, successful, and sustainable farmers. During the visit, the pupils and teachers of Merensky High discussed some of the challenges they face in terms of growth for the future and the expansion of their various agricultural facilities and programmes.
The school presented Didiza with a “wish list” of items and support they would require from government to further improve on their already widely recognized agricultural programme. The wish list contained items such as drones for crop spraying and aquaponics materials to enable the addition of this ground-breaking crop cultivation science to the school’s programme.
The minister of agriculture, land reform and rural development visited Agri-Merensky on Monday the 24th of January.

A 3rd Dan Blackbelt sensei in Shinkyokushinkai, Sensei Sydeck Monyela, from Namakgale who teaches his students from his garage, is appealing to the community to assist him with a bigger dojo. The current dojo, which is affiliated under the world karate organization in Japan, has been running from his garage in Namakgale for close on six years and has now become too small to accommodate his growing club. “My aim is to provide both adults and children with martial arts experience that is more than kicking and punching. I want to improve their lives by providing a superior method of self-defense, peace of mind and physical fitness,” he told Bulletin. Monyela boasted that his team is the best in the area as it has developed young champions since its establishment in 2015, which has secured them 20 shiny trophies in their showcase. He explained that PMC once assisted him with some trophies and mats for a competition he had hosted and that was a big load off his shoulders. He also mentioned that from the 5th to the 6th of March this year, 22 of his fighters will be participating in Klerksdorp at the Matlosana Cup, to qualify for the Dream Cup in Japan, scheduled for September. For this however, his fighters will need funding, and it is for this reason that he is appealing to the community and businesses in the area for assistance. “These fighters will not be representing our club but will be carrying the name of Ba-Phalaborwa onto the international stage. It is for this reason that we come to our community and plead for assistance. If there is anyone who is able to assist, please contact me on 079 655 7548.

Stanford produces great results Alan Redfern, principle of Stanford Lake College, lauded the matriculants of 2021 for their excellent marks achieved in their final exams. “The Class of 2021 have excelled. As a collective, they produced an outstanding set of matric final examination results, despite the immense challenges of Covid they had to face and overcome.” “To the students, you have all performed superbly. Through hard work, commitment and dedication, they have achieved results that will open doors for them in the future.” In the words of Disraeli, “There is no education like adversity”. “Whilst credit must go to the pupils, it must be acknowledged that without the commitment and professionalism of the staff who have toiled through equally challenging times, we would not be able to celebrate as we are.” “It is important to also acknowledge the work put in during the foundation phases. I thank all our feeder schools and the dedicated junior school teachers who have ensured that pupils arriving at Stanford Lake College have a
solid academic foundation.” “We are very proud to announce that once again we have maintained our 100% pass rate, with 93% of our pupils securing bachelor’s degree passes, enabling them to pursue further study at tertiary institutions.” “The class of 2021 obtained an average of 2,21 A’s per candidate with a total of 95 subject distinctions. Both our Dux, Danish Saleem, and Ethan Jones achieved a full house of eight distinctions.” “Danish was placed in the top 1% of candidates nationwide in Mathematics with the following candidates also being placed in the top 1% for the subjects listed, namely Hloni Mangena (Life Orientation), Nikita Stoltz (Afrikaans First Additional Language) and Jonathan Palmer (Maths Literacy).” “As a community, we can be extremely proud of this group of Stanfordians. We know that ‘it takes a village to educate a child’ and I thank all those involved in the education of these young people. I wish them all the best as they embark on the next chapter of their lives”, Redfern concluded his congratulations to the Alan Redfern matric class of 2021.

Tzaneen Bowls Club concluded its final rounds of the women’s and men’s club championship over the past weekend.
The Tzaneen Bowls Club is one of the sporting fraternities in the area that has not waited for 2022 to settle in, before tearing up the greens. This past weekend, Saturday the 23rd and Sunday the 24th of January, players of the club battled it out for the men’s and women’s pairs titles. The weather pitched its own curve ball on Saturday when rain hampered proceedings with the competitors having to adapt from a dry to a damp pitch, changing the game completely. In the end the men’s final round was concluded on the Sunday. The changing weather conditions did not sideline Sue Morrison who teamed up with Sarie Vermaak and went on to clinch the women’s pairs club title in fine style. The newly crowned champions competed against Terry Morgan and Adriana Jacobs who eventually had to settle for second place. William Cliengen and Peter Mogale played well together to book their spot in the final round for the men’s pairs title which pitted them against Robbie Kruger and Willie Jonker. They could however not manage the task and settle for second overall as the Kruger-Jonker pair took the honAlly Morrison ours.
