Vultures and other predators benefitted from the execution of a ‘wantaway’ buffalo after the department of Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) killed the animal as it was posing a threat to road users on the R40. In many cases, when an animal is killed outside of its habit area, its carcass is given to the community by LEDET to share amongst each other. This time however, the carcass was left to the vultures. The reason for that according to Zaid Kalla, of LEDET, was because buffaloes were known carriers of Foot and Mouth disease. The buffalo bull was put down after it escaped from one of the reserves on the route between Phalaborwa and Hoedspruit last week Wednesday, the 9th of February. The
animal was spotted by motorists roaming free across the road and authorities were informed. Initially, a buffalo and a kudu escaped the reserve, but the kudu managed to jump back over the fence into the protected area, leaving only the buffalo outside. According to an eyewitness who reported the sighting to authorities, Sonnyboy Mkhantswa from Sonny Safaris, he first saw a kudu. “But after following the kudu for a short while it jumped over the fence, and that is when I saw the buffalo pacing up and down, on and off the road.” Mkhantswa told Bulletin that he found a hippo in the same area some weeks ago, and reported it. This is not the first-time animals exited their protective areas as two weeks ago LEDET had to dart a lion and return it to a reserve after it was spotted on the R71.

The mother of the baby found abandoned in Lulekani outside Phalaborwa, was traced and her name is now known to police. Last week, Bulletin reported that a four-monthold baby was found abandoned in Lulekani, Matiko Xikaya, just outside Phalaborwa. “The police responded and found a newborn baby wrapped inside a blanket and dumped on the side of the road,” said the South African Police Services. “The baby was taken to hospital. Her mother is unknown, and a case of child abandonment was opened at the Lulekani Police Station.” A case of child neglect was opened and transferred to the Phalaborwa FCS unit for further investigation. This week, a 42-year-old woman, Julia Khosa, from Kurhula settlement went missing. The police say that on

Benfarm and Majeje villagers living on the outskirts of Phalaborwa once again blocked off sections of the R71 provincial road in protest. This time the disgruntled villagers took to the streets on Wednesday, the 16th of February, not in protest against their dysfunctional municipality, but against their chief, Mlungisi Ntsangwisi. According to the residents of these villages, they will block off sections of the R71 until Ntsangwisi makes an appearance and addresses the community. According to one resident, the communities were upset over the fact that nobody had yet met or even seen the tribal chief who does not reside in the Phalaborwa area, and despite this, he was taking decisions that affected the community. The chief is accused of making these drastic decisions without meeting the community or consulting with them on the matters that affect them directly. “We have just found out that there will be a clinic built, but it will be built in Prisca and the tribal offices will be moved there too,” said a resident at the protest. “How can they move the tribal offices without consulting us, the residents and owners of this tribal office first. We have never even met the royal family, so we want to meet them, and we will keep this place closed until the king himself comes from wherever he is to address.” Another resident, Andrew Ngobeni, said that their main problem was that the chief does not reside with his people and there is money meant for the community which the community does not receive. He said that Mashishimale have their own tribal authority which takes care of them. The community have now warned that should the government continue with their plan of building the tribal office at Prisca, they will barricade the R71 road indefinitely. This is a developing story and Bulletin will update accordingly.
Census comes to Mopani ■ Billy Sibuyi
Stats SA in Limpopo urged the public not to avoid being counted, as the province would suffer in getting a just distribution of resources should the numbers not add up. According to them, the information from census assists the government in responding positively in providing service delivery. It is for this reason that Mopani District Municipality’s mayor, Pule Shayi, on Monday the 14th of February, welcomed the census enumerators to his home at Mashishimale, outside Phalaborwa to be counted. He called on all the communities to support the programme, which according to him is key to compiling
data about the country’s socio-economic environment, the living conditions of people, and access to basic services. “We want to appeal to our people in the district to participate in CENSUS 2022, because it is key for policy formation, long-term planning, but also for forming proper basis for budget allocation in broader government,” said Shayi. He noted that it was commendable that the field workers had identity cards with photograph and that they wear the CENSUS 2022 branded clothes. “So, our communities should have no fear in opening doors for this team, but when in doubt they should contact 0800110248.”

Mboweni talks at Warriors Foundation
■ Joe Dreyer
“It is easier for me to make a lot of noise now that I am not in government anymore,” said former Reserve Bank governor and minister of finance, Tito Mboweni, at a breakfast hosted by the Warriors Foundation on Thursday morning this week. “It is as though they listen better now, than they did when I was a minister.” The breakfast was held at the scenic Fairview Hotel in Tzaneen and Mboweni was invited as a guest speaker by the Warriors Foundation organizer, Tracey van den Dool. Opening the breakfast with a short introduction, Rudi Viljoen of the Warriors Foundation offered a brief introduction of the Foundation and the strides they had made in the past few years in assisting young people with bursaries to complete what he termed a “bridge builder” course. The Foundation was established after their first candidate, a young girl by the name of Tumi, completed the course on a full bursary and went on to secure a senior management position at a large international corporation where she is still employed today. “The idea behind the Foundation is to offer our young leaders the opportunity to grow into their full potential and become bridge builders in our society. It is our young people, like Tumi, who will eventually bridge the cultural and socio-economic gaps in our society and help build a brighter to-
morrow,” he said. “As corporate role players in our economy, the Warriors Foundation offers a fantastic way for you to invest in your social responsibility by either sponsoring a child to complete the programme or becoming involved in the various aspects of the programme such as training and guidance.” As he took to the podium, Mboweni spoke about the gaps in a divided society that he believed a programme such as the one offered by the Warriors Foundation, could help cross. “You know,” he said, “I always find it ironic when the president comes onto the television and speaks of our nation. In truth, we are not one nation, not at all. We might occupy the same geographic area, but we are certainly not a united people. Because of Apartheid, we still remain a divided people, and we must work to fix this by bridging gaps between the various cultures.” The Haenertsburg local used the example of Makgoebaskloof and said it was very worrisome that though black residents of the Kloof outnumbered the white residents, there were very few black people who owned property in the Kloof. He touched briefly on the state of the economy and the projected growth for the next fiscal period before admitting that government had instituted a number of programmes which had failed dismally.
“We must find a way to get our banks to be more flexible in providing funding to young entrepreneurs. Why, for example is it not possible for people living in a township to secure loans and start a business? The future growth of the economy will come from SMME’s like we saw in Germany. But if it is increasingly difficult for these small businesses to gain access to funding, how ill they grow or become successful?”
Rudi Viljoen
Tracey van den Dool, Harry van den Heever, Rudi Viljoen, Rowina Viljoen, Tito Mboweni and Howard Blight.
The breakfast concluded with a short question and answer session which gave the attendees the opportunity to interact with Mboweni on various issues they required clarity on. When asked when he would ever return to government, Mboweni simply smiled and answered, “not even if hell freezes over will I ever go back there.”

Politsi takes hands with GTM to cure power crisis ■ Joe Dreyer With the continuous power cuts costing an average of 1 000 productive hours lost in the Politsi area per year, the farming community pulled together and approached the Greater Tzaneen Municipality with a workable plan. In an initiative guided by ZZ2, a team comprised of local farmers and business owners launched an audit of the power grid in their areas during October of 2021. Through this exercise they were able to identify and map the trouble zones which allowed them to action a strategy which they in turn presented to the municipality. “It soon became apparent to us that most of the issues we face with our continuous power outages could be attributed to small things we as a community could help sort out. Things like vegetation control around your own perimeter for starters, is actually one of the biggest causes of outages, especially during windy and rainy weather,” said Niel Scholtz of ZZ2. The idea they came up with was to involve everyone in the Politsi area and gather resources such as grasscutters, chainsaws, vehicles, and manpower to form a maintenance team which started clearing the servitudes under all the powerlines in the area. Thus far the teams have cleared 28 kilometres of vegetation in just the last few weeks, and they have 15 more kilometres left before their entire grid has been cleaned. “This project will become an ongoing maintenance exercise which initially will be conducted bi-weekly and as the system completely stabilizes, should become a monthly or bi-monthly exercise.” The Greater Tzaneen Municipality came onboard immediately and joined the residents on their quest to end the crisis, or at the very least make tending to outages a lot more efficient. “The involvement of the GTM is on the switching and the
legal side of the project. Before we conduct any maintenance, we get the municipal technicians on site and they switch off the power to allow us to get to work,” explained Deon Jacobs, Electrical Supervisor at ZZ2. “So far, we identified a faulty transformer, some missing links and broken auto-reclosers, which the municipality replaced, and we now have a good working relationship with them, which means we receive speedy service when we have a problem.” One of the other advantages of this project is that through the thorough cleaning and inspection of the powerlines, many previously unseen faults were identified in places that the municipal teams just could not reach, mostly because of the terrain and the overgrown vegetation. “One of the electricians who services our area has expressed his appreciation as he can now reach an area where for example, links have dropped, in less than half the time he would normally have taken in the past. And because the servitudes are now devoid of any overgrown trees and shrubbery, it makes it much easier to spot the faults on the lines,” said Scholtz. Scholtz and Jacobs approached Westfalia who threw their weight behind the project too and soon all the neighbouring farmers and businesses jumped on board. The project was mapped out in six phases of which four have already been completed. The last stretch of 15 kilometres is expected to be the most challenging as it will cross over the old Sapekoe tea farm and other rugged terrain. “One of the unexpected offshoots of this project has been the sense of ubuntu it has created. You know, whilst we were busy working the lines, neighbours reconnected after more than 15 years and some met for the first time. This is a great case study of what is achievable when neighbours take hands with their municipality to make a difference together. Politsi area has had no power outages in the last three weeks, and we even had our lights on during the storm at the start of the month.”

On Saturday and Sunday, the 12th and 13th of February, the players of Tzaneen Bowls Club competed in the final rounds of their club’s handicap singles competition. The experienced Senior Men’s players of the club knew exactly what to expect from each other on the greens, but a youngster was soon to upset the status quo. Amongst the contenders was a much younger rookie, Theodore Wolmarans, who has only been playing for about five months and when he managed to knock the club’s experienced greenkeeper and player, Koos Luyt, out in the play-offs, it suddenly became very clear that the old guard needed to up their game. Wolmarans played some outstanding bowls with none of the club’s veterans able to prevent him from reaching the final round. In the end though, it rested on the shoulders of Stoffel Vermaak to face off against the rookie menace in the final match. But even Vermaak could not bring the youngster’s siege to a halt and eventually conceded. In the women’s category it was the club’s competition secretary, Sue Morrison, who defeated Elsjé Beyer in the division final match. For more updates on the games and other events being held at the Tzaneen Bowls Club, be sure to keep an eye on this newspaper.
Beate Altenroxel, was up against Yolanda Wiid, with Altenroxel getting the better of her opponent to clinch the title. The men’s final was contested by the club’s experienced players, Tjokkie van Straate and Damien Stefaans. It was a hotly contested bout which ended in Van Straate’s favour by a narrow margin.
