Palabora Mining Company has sponsored 153 local students with study bursaries which were announced on Friday last week. In a statement issued by the communication manager, Abby Ledwaba, PMC remained alert to Covid-19 and to ensure compliance, the attendance was limited to one family member for each bursary recipient to comply with the conditions at the venue and the bursars attended the ceremony via a live streaming online service portal. “PMC has over many years been a pillar in the community through sustaining the economy of Ba-Phalaborwa and today we have stepped forward to support skills development,” stated Ledwaba. He also said the bursary program coordinated by Training Department will support learners with coverage of full tuition, residence, meals, a laptop, and book allowances at recognised institutions of higher in South Africa. Three former bursary holders who are now employed by PMC, also shared their experiences and how they were able to overcome difficult odds in their homesteads.

■ Billy Sibuyi Following the unrest from villagers living in Benfarm and Majeje on the outskirts of Phalaborwa, the Ba-Phalaborwa Mayor, Merriam Malatji, met with King Majeje, Mlungisi Ntsanwisi. Malatji, Ntsanwisi and other representatives of the communities in a bid to resolve some of the concerns raised by the residents. The meeting came shortly after residents had strategically blocked off sections of the R71 in protest against King Maje, stating that he does not reside in Phalaborwa and threatened to only open the road once the King made an appearance. The meeting was held last week at the Municipal Council Chamber, facilitated by the mayor, and it was resolved that the tribal offices that were meant to be moved to Prisca in Selwane would now be moved to Lulekani. Malatji appealed to the Ba-Phalaborwa residents to not resort to violence whenever they encounter challenges but to engage the relevant authorities including her office which according to her is always open for community needs. Malatji however, thanked Hosi Majeje, Mlungisi Ntsanwisi, and the community at large for their discipline and respect during the meeting.

In an unrelated matter, the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Public Account Committee (MPAC) led by the Chairperson, Pretus Mkhari, visited the Selwane and Mashishimale Sports Complex as part of its oversight role on Friday last week, 18th of February. The main purpose of the MPAC is to exercise oversight over the executive functionaries of council and to ensure good governance in the municipality. The municipality revealed that Mashishimale Sports Complex is fully completed and will be ready for public use ‘very soon’ while Selwane Sports Complex is only 2% shy of being complete, citing reasons as just “mere final touches to be made to complete the project”. The upgrading of the Tambo internal street in Namakgale, internal street in Lulekani Biko Extension, and Namakgale Stadium were among the projects visited. The Chairperson of MPAC, Petrus Mkhari, expressed his satisfaction with the progress made on the completion of both Selwane and Mashishimale Sports Complex. ***Editor’s Comment: It escapes all reason that a group of residents can take it upon themselves to close off provincial roads and completely upturn the lives and livelihoods of an entire region and threaten the safety of whole communities without facing any prosecution.

Nyiko Khosa, a former bursar from Lulekani, who completed his BEng Tech in Metallurgy in December 2021 and joined the PMC Graduate program in January 2022 said that the bursary was a “great opportunity as it allowed me to complete my studies without a hassle. I am now able to help my family financially as my mother is a domestic worker and my father is a retrenched operator from one of our local contractors.” According to the mine, the community baseline study that was performed in consultation with stakeholders such as Ba-Phalaborwa Community Forum, the Department of Education, Ba-Phalaborwa municipality, and the Traditional Authorities has established a clarion call for the provision of bursaries. “PMC is taking education and skills development to greater heights. I am urging all bursars to grab this opportunity with both hands and run with it. The world is evolving, and it requires education. Through this bursary, our bursars will be able to meet industry demand and requirements,” stated Dennis Modise, Senior Manager at Human Resource.

On Monday morning, a member of the public browsed through the documents section of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s website when she noticed something very strange. Instead of the usual drop-down menus containing links to bylaws, council minutes and performance agreements, the sight that greeted her was that of a tattooed skateboarder holding a pistol to his head wearing what appeared to be a cardboard cut-out of a smiley face emoji. The image contained a caption that

declared “Hacked by Kareem” and a statement that read “Hello, [eligible] Justice cannot be for one side alone but must be for both. Tell me, what in your heart.” Neville Ndlala, the Head of Communications for the GTM, quickly investigated the matter and within a few hours the situation had been rectified and it appeared that the hack was stopped. At the time of going to print it was not established where the hack came from or why the specific section of the website was hacked, but we do know that this is the first time the municipality’s site was hacked.

were released on bail and their case was postponed to the 31st of March 2022. The bogus recruiters demanded money for enrolment from all the prospective nursing trainees and according to the police, more than 75 unemployed youth paid the money into the suspects’ accounts in 2016 and 2017 totaling to a staggering R610 000. Moreover, the victims were never employed as promised and that was when the matter was reported to the Hawks in 2018 and the subsequent investigations revealed that the suspects were not the employees of any department. The 40-year-old suspect appeared in the Bushbuckridge Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, the 23rd of February this week, and he will be joined with his co-accused soon. At the time of going to print the court was still in session. The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Zodwa Mokoena, applauded the team for the courage to pursue the suspect who was hiding in Limpopo. She further warned the public not to be deceived by anyone who will be demanding money promising them employments.

Nurses who fell victim to a ruthless scammer in the Bushbuckridge area, found some reprieve this week when the law finally caught up to the criminal who defrauded them. This comes after a 40-yearold suspect was arrested by the Mpumalanga Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation at Medupi power station in Lephalale, Limpopo province, for theft and corruption. Allegedly, the suspect would impersonate an official from the Department of Health conducting a recruitment drive, reaching out to gatherings like churches, and other places where he could find unemployed youth in large numbers. According to the Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson, Capt. Dineo Sekgotodi, the suspect also hired two females who would go around recruiting and promising people enrolment at the Nursing Training College around Bushbuckridge which would guarantee employment at the Department of Health. His two female companions were arrested last year, on the 10th of May, and appeared in the Bushbuckridge Magistrates’ Court. They

Woman’s harrowing ordeal after death ■ Joe Dreyer When Esté Zietsman’s father passed away on the 27th of July 2021 at the age of 87, she expected that the worst was over. Her father had been a long-time sufferer of emphysema and his last days were spent in and out of hospital or having to be nursed by his wife and daughter at home. To make matters worse, he tested Covid-positive despite having received his Pfeizer vaccine exactly a month earlier. “This last time we went to hospital the doctors explained that there really was nothing more they could do for my dad. His body was starting to shut down and he had lost the ability to walk and even bathe unassisted,” Zietsman explained. “My mother and I tried to get him as comfortable as we could at home. We knew he was nearing the end.” When her father exhaled for the last time, Esté jumped into action and contacted AVBOB funeral parlour where her father had a funeral policy. “The guys who came to collect my father’s body were extremely efficient, polite, and very professional. They handled my father, and more importantly, my mother, with the utmost respect and professional courtesy,” Zietsman recalled. “Because my father was Covid positive at the time of his death, the body was first placed into a plastic bag before they took him away. So once they had collected my father’s body and gone, we were left wondering what to do next. How does the process work from here, where do we start, who do we contact and all of that. So, I went to AVBOB’s offices. Little did I know what hellish journey lay before me.” When Esté and her mom entered the building they were pointed to a lady behind a counter who would assist them. When they approached this lady however, she loudly proclaimed, “listen, I just want to tell you that I found another job and will not be able to assist you, but this other lady will help you.” “So I said to the lady, okay that’s fine, but before you leave please just check on the system if everything is in order with my father’s policy documents and please just walk us through the process.” The lady behind the counter told them that they needed to go to home affairs and submit a completed a form which she handed her. The form needed to be signed by the person who saw the body. In this case it was one of the local doctors.

“I made an appointment to see the doctor and he filled in all of the fields on the form and stamped it with his official stamp, and I filled in the rest of the fields required of me. When I returned to the lady at AVBOB, she very rudely told me that the documentation was incorrect, and the doctor was not allowed to sign where he did. I must go and see my ward councillor of the ward where my father lived when he died. The lady also said I must go the municipality and obtain a municipal stamp.” Completely confused by the notion that one needed a municipal official to stamp a death notice, Esté drove to the Modjadjiskloof municipal offices to get help as Tzaneen’s Municipal offices were already nearing closing time. There, she was told that they could not assist her as she had the wrong forms. “At AVBOB they gave me new documents. I said to the manager, I needed fingerprints of the deceased as with the first set of papers and they left and returned shortly thereafter with my dad’s fingerprints on the new documentation. From there, I went back to the Tzaneen municipality and the lady at the Speaker’s office refused to sign the documents and the Speaker also refused to help. I was sent to the ward councillor, Tienie Prinsloo. When I met with him, Prinsloo told me that he had never heard of any such process, and how could he be expected to sign a death certificate when he never knew my father, and also, he has never heard of a ward councillor expected to sign a document like this? But he agreed to assist.”

Above are the documents containing the fingerprints of Esté Zietsman’s dad. Surprisingly, the fingerprints on the first set of documents, differ drastically from those on the second set.

The man looked at me and said, just one minute. He disappeared with my father’s ashes and heard the loud knocking of a hammer. When he returned, there was a silver plaque nailed to the top of the box without any engraving. Actually, he said, this belongs on a coffin and I don’t know what you are talking, but this is all we’ve got.” Esté contacted AVBOB to lay a complaint and spoke to one of the area managers. The man apologized profusely and said that the situation would be looked into. This area manager then contacted the Tzaneen manager who later phoned Esté and in a poor attempt at reconciliation, offered to send her some flowers. Bulletin will follow up on this matter and have already sent inquiries to all relevant parties in an attempt to gain clarity. At the time of going to print yesterday, the Zietsman’s have not received any further communication from AVBOB in the five months since the ordeal. We have in the meantime received information from sources that municipal councillors in the rural areas were receiving payment from residents to sign off on death notices and in some cases the councillors were charging R1 000 per document. We have also sent an inquiry to the municipality regarding this matter.

A double Finsbury victory for Merensky sides ■ Roelof de Jonge In the latest Finsbury Schools Cricket League clash for First and U/15 teams, the sides from Tzaneen’s two high schools, Ben Vorster and Merensky, took each other on, on Saturday the 19th of February. The First teams match took place at the Ben Vorster cricket oval with the Vossies winning the toss and electing to field first. In their allotted 50 overs Merensky’s batsmen set the hosts a target of 145 runs for the loss of 10 wickets. In reply, Ben Vorster could only manage 96 runs for the dismissal of 10 wickets which handed Merensky a 49 run victory. The Merensky batsmen who stood out were Calvin Severin who scored 34 runs and was well supported by Marais Botha with his 23 runs, and Hendrik Botes who made 19 runs. Botes was also a thorn in the side of Ben Vorster with his bowling dexterity as he claimed five wickets for 22 runs, which included four maiden overs in his 10 overs spell. Deservedly, for his outstanding play he was named Man of the Match. Another versatile player in the Merensky arsenal was Marais Botha, who took three wickets for 27 runs, which included one maiden in his spell of five overs. The Ben Vorster batsmen who were stubbornly determined to chase down the Merensky score were Meyer Jacobs who made 22 runs, supported by Ruben Vosloo with his contribution of 21 runs. The Red bowlers showed no mercy for the visitors as they launched some ferocious attacks on the Blues in an effort to halt their fierce attacks. Gideon Goosen claimed two wickets for 11 runs in seven overs and Ruben Vosloo claimed three for 32 runs in his six overs spell. In the meantime, the juniors faced off at the Plasie oval where the two neighbours’ U/15 boys battled it out. Merensky’s junior squad batted first and scored 76 runs for 10 wickets in 30.2 overs. In their turn, the Merensky bowlers proved a tad too restrictive for the visiting Reds, who scored only 45 runs before being bungled all out after 27.5 overs. Merensky’s junior’s won the match by 31 runs. The players who were fundamental in their team’s victory were batsmen James Durant with his 10 runs off 37 balls and JP Botha with his seven runs off 10 balls. Morné Huysamen had worked hard to add a further seven runs off 38 balls. The Man of the Match, Rinaldo Bornman, had a field day with his bowling. He took four wickets in his eight overs spell, including three maiden overs and conceded only 10 runs. Xander Schoeman in his six overs should be in good stead going ahead in the Finsbury U/15 league after his three maiden overs where he conceded just five runs and reaped two wickets in the process. PG Botes also sent two wickets back to the change rooms for a mere 14 runs in his spell of four overs which included a maiden. Leon de Lange took two wickets for only four runs in 2.5 overs.

Athletics season officially open

■ Roelof de Jonge

Tzaneen Primary School hosted eight of their neighbouring schools on Saturday the 19th of February, for the 2022 Interschools Meeting. The hosts however did not extend any courtesy to their guests and dominated both the track and field events, raking in 38 gold, 22 silver and 23 bronze medals on the day. There were several records improved on the day. Leandré de Lange who competed in the age group for girls u/13, improved the 75m hurdles record of 12,60 to 12,45 seconds whilst Ndzalo Makhubele improved a 17-year-old high jump record for the boys u/13 by breaching the 1.57m barrier. With this outstanding performance it came as no surprise that Makhubela received the Best Track Athlete of the Day award. Milan Ferreira bettered the girls’ u/12 discus record from 18.9m setup in 2019, by almost a metre to 19.89m. Zané Vosloo, who took second place in this discus item also improved the record with her attempt of 19.43m. In the meantime, Jandré Venter, extended the javelin record for boys’ u/12 to 27.29m from the previous record of 26,85m measured in 2019. Schalk Rossouw mirrored Venter’s performance and improved the boys’ u/13 javelin record by almost two metres from 27.93m to 29.39m. The middle-distance athlete, Sebela Moraka, shaved off splits from the existing boys’ u/10 1 200m record that stood at 04:23.59, and improved it to 04:23.35s. Jamie de Carvalho who took part in the age group for boys u/13, set a new Champion of Champions

80m sprint record of 10,03 seconds. The previous record of 10.25 seconds was set in 2020. A total of eight schools competed, namely Laerskool Drakensig, Laerskool Dr Annecke, Duiwelskloof Primary, Fauna Park Primary, Laerskool Mariepskop, Laerskool Phalaborwa, Laerskool Phalaborwa-Noord, Unicorn Preparatory School and of course the host school, Tzaneen Primary. A couple of the Duiwelskloof athletes were also amongst the gold medalists on Saturday. Leila van Wyngaardt won the 70m hurdles item for girls u/11. With this achievement she also improved the record for this event and in the long jump item she took another gold medal along with a new record distance. It seemed as though the ‘Klofies’ were a force to be reckoned with in the long jump item with two more athletes notching up golds for their team. Katelyn Nortje in the age group for girls u/12 and Karabo Mahasha for boys u/12 both won their long jump items. Fellow ‘Klofie’ Bohlale Rapatsa in the category for boys u/12 raked in gold when he won the 1 200m middle-distance item.
