Matlala’s “Silk Roads” finally materialize

■ Joe Dreyer

The Greater Tzaneen Municipality officially opened the resurfaced Boundary Street on Friday morning the 8th of April during a brief ceremony. Mayor Gerson Molapisane, the newly elected Municipal Manager Donald Mhangwana, the Ward Councillor for Ward 15 Chrizelle Dreyer, and the Roads Manager for the GTM Olga Tshisevhe, were all present. In his brief address to the media the mayor said he was extremely proud of the work the municipality’s engineering department accomplished in their partnership with local private civil construction company, Quality Plant Hire. “It is work such as this that we can be proud of and look upon as comparable to infrastructure anywhere else in the country,” he said. “Thank you to Quality and their team for the outstanding workmanship on not only this road, but Billy Maritz Street as well. Through proper and constant maintenance these roads will have a very long lifetime and be a part of our legacy.” Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, the group which included Hans Nienaber, Ampie Vermeulen, Wendy Rasetsoka (Safety Officer) and Phelo Mdani (Project Assistant) of Quality Plant Hire, William Molokomme, the GTM director of Civil Engineering, Olga Tshisevhe, Roads Manager of the GTM, and Constance Ramatswana the head of Infrastructure, left to Billy Maritz Street where the road was turned from a pothole-laden tyre-eating gauntlet into a proverbial silk road. Councillor Dreyer thanked the mayor and the construction crews and added that the public has expressed their gratitude for the new roads and hoped that soon they will enjoy this with all other roads within the municipality. “It may seem like something trivial, it’s just a road after all, but as a parent with young school going children, I can promise you that the hectic morning commute has just become a lot more bearable. Boundary and Billy Maritz Streets are vital arteries in ward 15 and carry a lot of traffic. Hopefully these roads will now be properly maintained to keep them in this condition for many years to

come.” ***Editor’s Comment: In 2019 Thapelo Matlala, then municipal manager of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality had a meeting with me in his office. During this meeting we discussed a lot of things including the failing infrastructure and specifically the roads. Matlala at one point exclaimed that he had a vision of turning the street in Tzaneen, into “silk roads”. In 2021 he approved the construction of the road that now links Boundary

Road to the R71 passed Sasol, and gave the go ahead for other similar rehabilitation projects. In September 2021 he suddenly resigned following an assassination attempt, unionists consistently calling for his head because he cut down on overtime, and many legal battles over illegal tenders which essentially made it difficult for him to be an effective accounting officer. In his absence it appears that what he set in motion has now gained momentum.

Post office closed Unlike anything you’ve seen

■ Joe Dreyer

Letsitele’s post office is closed temporarily due to an issue related to rent. The employees at Letsitele post office have been redeployed to other post offices including Tzaneen Post Office until such time as an agreement regarding the lease of the Letsitele building is resolved. “The SA Post Office is negotiating with the landlord and we hope to re-open it soon,” said Johan Kruger of the South African Post Office’s media department. “The employees have been deployed to post offices in the area to make sure the service is not affected by the increase in customers. Alternative post offices are the Tzaneen, Nkowankowa and Lenyenye post offices. We would like to apologise for this inconvenience.”

Mob kills woman

■ Jeff Jackson

A 37-year old woman believed to have been a Mashonisa (loan shark) was killed by an angry mob at Salema village on Monday evening. The Police received a complaint about an act of vigilantism in which a mob intended to burn down the house of a 37-year-old woman believed to be a money lender. The Police rushed to the scene and discovered that the mob had tied the victim to her motor vehicle and dragged her to the bushes. The mob then started to throw stones at the Police while they attempted to search for the victim. Eventually the police officer resorted to the use of rubber bullets to disperse the crowds and managed to retrieve the victim. Afterwards, the mob torched the victim’s house and damaged a Toyota motor vehicle, both valued at R200 000. The victim was later transported to Malamulele Hospital but succumbed to her injuries upon arrival. She was identified as Basani Portia Shuma from Salema village. She was reportedly accused by the mob of being responsible for the disappearance of a local man who allegedly went missing two weeks ago. Police opened murder, public violence, arson and malicious damage to property cases and a manhunt for the suspects was launched. At the time of going to print, no new information was made available in this case.

■ Joe Dreyer The bush behind Best Drive in Tzaneen’s infamous CBD is the epitome of disgusting. Not only do the taxi drivers do as they please there, street mechanics dump oil and spare parts into the stormwater drains and street hawkers erect their illegal shacks everywhere, but prostitution runs rife too. A short walk into the overgrown bush will lead you to a site that is genuinely unbelievable when you first come across it (pun intended). Just a few metres from the railroad tracks the narrow footpath carved through the shrubbery by tavern patrons and opens up into a clearing big enough for two adults to perhaps lay side-by-side in. It is evident however, that lying down is not the practice being exercised here. The first impression is that sex is being had there. A lot of sex. In fact, it could be deduced that whoever is having the sex among the bushes is either training for an Olympic sport, or is a vivacious supporter of local entrepreneurs. Howsoever it may be, we sent this image to the spokesperson for the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Neville Ndlala, and the Councillor for Ward 15, Chrizelle Dreyer, under whose jurisdiction the area falls, to bring to their attention that something needs to be done to clean up that particular section of bush. “I think prostitutes might be operating there,” said Ndlala. “I will send the relevant team there to see what we can do.” In her response, Dreyer said that the solution would not be to move the prostitutes or even attempt to police the area with the intention of ending the problem. “We must remember that these women feed their families through prostitution which is all means of income they have. I think the better solution to the problem is to place a few dustbins in that area. You are not going to prevent prostitution, that is not an immediately preventable problem, the littering is the problem we can solve right away.”

Foundation is laid VLU vroue hou prysuitdeling ■ Roelof de Jonge

On Friday the 8th of April, Lowveld Academy hosted a “Pillars of the Community” during a student seminar with the aim of providing an open discussion with students regarding preparations for students’ futures, including entrepreneurship, safety, and future planning. The guest speaker, Magistrate Charlotte Dickinson, opened the discussion with a highly entertaining anecdotal speech on her experiences and life lessons. The initiative, hosted by teacher Leslie Nhongo, saw members of SAPS Hoedspruit, Hlokomela Centre and Jahara Rehabilitation Centre discuss safety and concerns within this community. Debbie Tomson, a Farm Watch correspondent, and Hercules Strydom, a local landscape architect, used the platform to introduce students to starting up a business as well as the realities of managing a business. Anneline Coetzer, family and child therapist from Hoedspruit, took the time to discuss mental health and the warning signs thereof with the students. Lebone Mathukane, student leader at Lowveld Academy, said that “student reactions clearly indicated the need for open discussion, and gave them the necessary resources to start preparing for aspects of life we were not even aware of.”

Nothing to do? Why not go shoot someone ■ Joe Dreyer Airsoft is a little like paintball, just not as painful or as loud. Whilst it is a bit of an expensive hobby to get into, it has amassed a huge global following which has now hit the long grass of the Far North bushveld. This after the establishment of an airsoft club in Phalaborwa by enthusiast, André van Staden. As an avid “Airsofter” he travels to Polokwane at least twice a month to play in matches there which was part of the reasoning behind establishing a local club in his own town. “There really aren’t many options around here for people to have some fun, plus if you want to engage in an activity that is outside the norm, you have to travel all the way to Polokwane,” he said. “It is also a healthy outdoor activity and gets the heart racing whilst providing you with some fun with your kids, family, or employees. It is truly a sport at its core, and I am sure players will tell you how knackered they are when coming off the field.” There are currently 75 members in the newly established club and despite not everyone playing the games yet, these members are showing a keen interest. According to the club, their aim is to host at least one game every month with the goal being two games depending on the weather and other factors. “Although we are independent clubs, we operate under the COF Airsoft umbrella and abide by their rule set for safety and games. We do not have championships or leagues. We aim to keep the focus on fun, friendship and social, not monetary values.” There is a sister club in Polokwane who also operate under COF Airsoft which is where van Staden currently plays, and word has it that a group of guys in Tzaneen are busy establishing a local club zin town too. In Phalaborwa, the playing field is situated in the bush sur-

rounding the MOTH Shell hole. “We are sincerely thankful to the team there who have accommodated us and allowed the use of their facilities. I have two other larger field options available, but it is an insane amount of work to get the fields “play ready” and at this stage I am doing it completely by myself. My focus now is to get “Shell hole” which is this fields’ name, up to spec and fair to each side.” The club strives to be as non-intrusive as possible and where they can avoid disturbing the natural fauna and flora, they do so. No trees or shrubs are ever removed or harmed (unless confirmed aggressive alien like Lantana Camara) and no animals are to be disturbed in any way. All interested parties can contact Phalaborwa Airsoft Club on their Facebook page and join the WhatsApp group from there. For those who do not have any airsoft gear, kits such as guns and safety kits will be available for rental on the day. A paramedic and field marshals are present during every game and ANSI rated eye safety is mandatory and to be worn when leaving the safe zone and entering the field. “We will be available for team building, year-end functions and private parties. Children are welcome and we plan to have under 12 games for children only. Absolute minimum is 9 years as we need them to fully comprehend and understand the safety aspects and children willing to play the regular games and are under the age of 12 must be escorted or accompanied by their parent or guardian throughout the whole game.” Any further queries can be directed at PHBAirsoft@axxess.co.za

Follow up: Python released ■ Billy Sibuyi The python that was rescued by members of the Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation (PNHF) a month ago, was released back in to the wild. This after the reptile suffered severe injuries after members of the community hacked at its side with what seemed to be machetes or spades. This has brought much joy to Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation directors as they were initially the people who oversaw the capturing and transportation of the 4.1m python to Johannesburg for its much-needed surgery. This was after the snake was spotted in Phalaborwa’s light industrial area, captured by Bernice and Gustav van Zyl who took it to the Phalaborwa Animal and Bird Clinic, and received its initial treatment from veterinarians Dr, Fernando Prados Nieto and Dr, Lani Anagnostou. “We love happy endings and today was no exception! We successfully released the Southern African Python today after she was rescued over a month

ago,” stated Eugene Troskie of the PNHF. According to Troskie, Carel Coetzer from the Herpetological Society of Phalaborwa graciously looked after the snake for a week while she received follow-up treatments. It was decided however that she needed more specialised treatment and was transported by Ryno van der Westhuizen, a member of the SA Hunters Mopani branch, to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital. The veterinary team at the hospital did an amazing job on the snake that her recovery time was less than half of what they had all expected. She was released back into the wild on Sunday, the 10th of April, far away from people, with the help of Sasha Bornman from PMC. Eugene Troskie said that he wanted to thank every person and organisation that played a part in saving the snake. “By working together, we can continue making a difference and to conserve our biodiversity,” he concluded.

Fireworks set Marula Festival stage alight ■ Jeff Jackson A video making the rounds on social media showed the scary moment the Murala festival’s fireworks almost set the entire venue ablaze. This after the Ba-Phalaborwa dictatorship decided to qapprove the use of fireworks at the event at midnight to signal the arrival of a “surprise celebrity”. The event was further marred by poor organization as nobody bought the tickets for the festival which were sold at R200 and so the organizers were forced to make entry at the gates free. The surprise act was the previous marula festival host from 2020, Kope Makgae, who is known for his character, Mrekza, in the popular soap, Generations the Legacy. Makgae who was born in Lebowakgomo, Polokwane, was according to the organisers the surprise act which deemed it essential that a fireworks display be set up for him, despite him being a regular to most revellers. The video shared with Bulletin shows the top cor-

ner of the stage on fire after the fireworks stunt, and one can hear some revellers arguing whether it was fire or part of the fireworks set up. To view this video, visit our facebook page at Far North Bulletin. Thandi Moeka, one of the revellers who attended the festival told Bulletin that she warned the guard who did not pay attention to her. One person attempted to throw a water bottle onto the fire but was unable to reach the flames because of the height of the stage. In the video people are heard screaming as they notice the fire not dying out. At one point, the person recording the video can be heard laughing about the incident as security guards did not believe there was a fire. However, after much persistence from everybody who saw the fire, a person was made to climb up the poles and make use of a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. Bulletin will follow up with the BPM and the event organizers to determine exactly why the proper safety precautions were not adhered to and whether the police explosives expert was indeed on hand as per the law.

Tzaneen Bowls Club concluded its open singles championships for men and women on Saturday and Sunday the 9th and 10th of April amidst some rainy weather. In the final for the men’s division was it Stoffel Vermaak who came up against the club’s president, Ally Morison. Vermaak however made the most of the changing conditions on Sunday afternoon to clinch the 2022 men’s singles title. The women’s final match was held earlier that day and saw Sue Morrison and Terry Morgan take each other on for the crown. In the end, Morrison managed to outwit her rival to take home the title.

Ally Morrison and Stoffel Vermaak went on to battle in the final match with Vermaak taking the title.

PHS onthoring kragtige Buffels ■ Joe Dreyer
