Approximately 54 elephants were tested for human tuberculosis (TB) across the Kruger National Park after an adult bull was found dead because of the disease back in 2016. This paved way for the park to extend its testing for TB to other animal species and over the past week, KNP, immobilized and darted a young bull elephant from a helicopter in order to test the animal for the disease. Veterinary senior manager in Kruger National Park’s Veterinary Wildlife Services, Dr. Peter Buss, told Bulletin that in 2016 they found a dead elephant and the post-mortem revealed the cause of death as human TB. “That was totally unexpected and as a result we set up this project to look at other elephants just to see if it was one isolated incident or there was a bigger problem than we thought.” The park stated that they would extend their testing to other animals since a large study was conducted on a free-ranging population of rhino which revealed that one in every seven rhinos in the South African National Park was infected with Mycobacterium bovis (M. Bovis), the pathogen that causes bovine tuberculosis (bTB). “The rhinos are being exposed to the organism, they are mounting an immune response, but they are not getting sick and dying from it,” he said. “The same applies to other species. For example, we know that we get TB in our lions, and that individuals
Veteriranians help an elephant bull down, after it was darted. will die of the disease. But if you look at the population level of the disease, lions seem to be doing fine and their numbers have remained fairly static.” The study which was conducted by Stellenbosch University (SU) Animal Tuberculosis Research Group, South African National Parks (SANParks) Veterinary Wildlife Services, and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance tested samples from about 437 rhinos, collected from 2016 to 2020 in the Kruger National Park.

The announcement by the South African Department of Health (SADoH) that Covid-19 restrictions would be dropped entirely for both domestic and international travel came not only as good news to the country but as a lifeline to the tourism industry. Of all the mainstream economic activities affected by the pandemic-related isolation, the tourism sector was by far the hardest hit and this is evidenced by the number of people left unemployed in the hospitality industry. Tourism in South Africa, before Covid-19, was a more than R130 billion industry, contributed 3% directly to GDP, and made up 4,5% of the country’s employment. The Tourism Business Council of SA (TBCSA) said that the latest tourist accommodation figures showed the in-
dustry was on the rebound and was recovering some of its losses when compared to 2019 and the past two years of restrictions in movement. Last week Monday, 20th of June, Statistics SA released the April tourist occupancy numbers, and it showed an increase of 53.4% in tourist accommodation when compared to the same period in 2021. The income from accommodation went up 43.5% year-on-year in April because of a 17.8% increase in the number of stay unit nights sold and a 21.8% increase in the average income per stay unit night sold. The TBCSA Tourism Leadership Conference which will take place from 14-16 September 2022 in North West Province, will gather industry players and policymakers under one roof, to reflect, discuss, and forge a way forward for the industry.

Phalaborwa water woes continue ■ Billy Sibuyi The water scarcity in the town of Phalaborwa has become the norm for residents and so has the frequent lack of electricity. On several occasions, the town was left without a single drop of water, despite being payed by rate paying residents. Various organizations have attempted to hold the municipality accountable, however, without success. Only after the community of Phalaborwa came together in a peaceful protest both black and white and decided that ‘enough is enough’ that the district municipality decided to pay a part of their outstanding fee to Lepelle Northern Water.
The Mopani District Municipality, led by Maloko Masilo faced the consequences of their failure to pay their bulk water supplier R50 million for the term, as the water board turned off the water supply. This in turn left the Phalaborwa residents scrambling for water for almost two weeks as only 20% of the water was being supplied to the residents. On Wednesday morning, the 29th of June, the municipality announced that Lepelle Noprthern Water Board were having challenges with their flange adaptor rubbers as they were reported to have been leaking. The municipality said that Lepelle were in contact with a supplier of flange adaptor rubbers and were working on fixing the problem.

Sugarman gives back R80 000 ■ Joe Dreyer Following a very successful innuagural Sugar Stores Golf Day held this past weekend, Lino de Carvalho and his team decided to give back to selected local institutions in support of local charitable causes. A total of R80 000 was donated by the OK Sugar Stores franchise, to be divided equally among the eight chosen institutions. Goue Jare, God’s Haven, Noah’s Ark, Tzaneen Care Group, Tzaneen Primary School, Ben Vorster High School, CHOICE Trust, the SAVF each received OK Rewards Cards preloaded with R10 000 in credit.
“We took the decision to give each of these institutions R10 000 in credit which they can spend at any of the OK Sugar Stores for groceries and other necessities. In this way, the institutions and their beneficiaries can have assurance that the funds are spent on actual necessities and not squandered,” explained de Carvalho. “We will also be able to offer them a detailed statement of where the money was spent and on which products, so that they can have a better idea of the items that are most in demand and need to be stocked up on.” The handover was done on Friday the 24th of June at the head office of the Sugar Stores at Sugarhill.

Greater Letaba muni falling to pieces ■ Roelof de Jonge The norm these days seems that independent bodies such as residential rates and taxpayer associations are taking municipalities to task in order to receive adequate service delivery and maintenance of infrastructure. This seems to be the case in the Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM), with residents of Modjadjiskloof having to pile on the pressure to get some form of service from their public servants. The latest hot topic amongst disgruntled residents is the so called “beautification” of both the entrances of this town. This whilst the rest of the town’s vital infrastructure like electricity, water supply and sewerage systems have all but completely collapsed. The current state of affairs in Modjadjiskloof plugs into a national problem. The current national average index score for local municipalities stands at only 45 out of 100, which underlines the crisis that has been unfolding in local government over several years. The average index score for municipalities previously identified as dysfunctional or worse (there are 105 of them, excluding district municipalities) was 43. Some 48 of those previously identified as a problem still score below their cohort’s average of 43, suggesting little significant change in status over the last three years since they were listed as being dysfunctional. A report submitted by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) to the parliamentary local government committee in August 2021, indicated that a further 111 local municipalities were classified as being at medium risk for further deterioration. Only 16 were rated as stable. The Out of Order index suggests many of those medium risk municipalities may be further down the road than already imagined. To prevent the Kloof from deteriorating even further than the cur-

rent state it is in, the rates and tax payers residential association of this town constantly pressurizes the GLM to prioritize issues to be addressed. These issues amongst others are that the water infrastructure including the maintenance and repair budget should be completely overhauled. The maintenance and repair of electricity also needs a complete overhaul and the bridge close to the hospital must immediately be repaired as it might collapse any time because of shoddy workmanship. The roadside bushes in the metro area need to be cleared and maintained including the cemetery, outside gym area, and the pathway to Panorama that domestic workers use on their way to work. Potholes need to be filled or fixed at Veldkornet and Marais Streets, turning off street lights during the day which occurs in Mable and Veldkornet Streets need to be prioritized and some of the brand-new lights installed in Zwariri Drive are not operational and street lights need to be installed in Charles Maberly Streets. All residential properties must be connected to the mainline sewerage system as was promised and it was recommended that the system be repaired so that raw sewage does not run down the streets. Residents have requested the GLM to fill the hole that was created by them and to repair the fencing opposite First National Bank. Rotaba Cottages need urgent maintenance, the grass needs to be cut as well as the removal of old trees and cleaning the roofs of the cottages needs urgent attention. The association also highlighted the illegal dumping site which is a bone of contention because there is no control and people just dump their refuse anywhere on the site. According to the association, it was originally budgeted for

Ready, set, play!
Toe sê die direkteur; “Will you tell him or shall I?”
“Aa, dink ek, my eerste bewonderaar!” Ek antwoord. Die persoon aan die ander kant sê; “Is dit Radio Hoëveld?” Ek antwoord ja. Hy vra; “Is dit Ben Theunissen?” Ek antwoord weer ja. Toe kom die woorde; “Jy is ‘n k*k, man!

Damien Stefaans, treasurer of the ‘Kloof’s’ bowls club, said the 49th edition of this popular tournament attracted a total of 112 players from Tzaneen, Duiwelskloof, Hoedspruit, Polokwane, Lydenburg, Whiteriver, Fochville and Rustenburg. The host club made the most of playing on home ground with two of its teams advancing to the final round on Sunday afternoon. The Duiwelskloof team comprising David Wiid, Rynier de Jager, Hendrik van der Linden and Beate Altenroxel went on to win the tournament. The Mixed Team with Francios Hanekom, Ally Morrison, Doug Reed and Sue Morrison were runners-up whilst he third spot overall went to the Duiwelskloof Club’s Louw Swanepoel, Tinashe Madzodze, Uwe Sauer and Charles Meyer. The title for the Plate Competition went to Polokwane Bowls Club comprising Coenie Venter, Lyn Lambert, Aggie Ascenco and Desré Brits. The rain that accompanied the cold weather on the first day certainly did not deter the players from enjoying some competitive contests. On the second day the weather was still chilly, but at least the rain stayed away. The management as well as the co-organisers of the Wolkberg Tournament from Duiwelskloof Bowls Club, gave a heartfelt appreciation to all the sponsors who made this event possible.
