The Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation (PNHF), together with Limpopo Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism (Ledet) have been following information that leopards were on the loose in Phalaborwa town. According to Zaid Kalla, LEDET spokesperson, the leopard was being tracked but there were no signs of a leopard, however, the department would remain on the ground to act when the need arose. Eugene Troskie from PNHF said that they were not planning on dealing with the leopards currently as they would await Ledet’s lead on the matter. Reports received from residents were that two leopards were seen close to each other and according to the report, one had killed a dog near the President Brand Street area. “We live near the Kruger, so we are not sure how

The Hoedspruit Town Watch’s CCTV Camera Surveillance system received a major upgrade as the 12 cameras will soon be extended to 28 cameras across the town. The Town Watch, which works side-by-side with the Hoedspruit Farm Watch to keep the community safe, said that their night patrols played an important role as it gave the community a sense of safety. They also said that the signage outside of Hoedspruit stating that the town is under 24-hour surveillance was a legal requirement and served as a deterrent to potential criminals.

It could be a youngster that came from there but it could also be a youngster who came from a nearby reserve,” a conversationist from PMC said. The leopards, according to reports were first sighted last week Friday, 1st of July, in the evening and again several days after that near Cloth of Gold. “People should be careful when walking, jogging, or cycling in the area close to the airport. They should keep an eye on pets and children playing outside, especially try to keep pets indoors at night. If they see a leopard, don’t try and chase, capture or kill it. Please report sightings or incidents to Dirk de Klerk from Ledet or to PNHF,” stated Troskie. In the last month, since its inception, Town Watch assisted in three separate arrests including the dismissal of an employee who was allegedly abusing the company vehicle under surveillance, produced video evidence when a truck spilled cement on the road, and provided camera footage to Farm Watch in the recovery effort of two stolen motorbikes. Both André Cornelius of AM Tech, in charge of the installation and maintenance of the camera network, and Gideon Stander of Herotel Team who provides the communications for the cameras were commended.

A fire broke out and was quickly extinguished at one of the banks in Eden Square Shopping Center, Phalaborwa, on Tuesday morning, 5th of July. According to reports, bankers at ABSA in Eden Square, were quickly rushed out of the building after reports of a fire in their building. By the time Bulletin arrived at the center, the ‘small fire’ had already been extinguished according to the bank personnel and security guards. “It was a small fire that was extinguished with the fire extinguisher in the bank, nothing too serious,” said one of the security guards at the entrance to the bank. Bulletin has since attempted to reach the center management for comment but at the time of going to print we had not succeeded.
As winter comes to an unhurried end and the dry season approaches, SANParks is working tirelessly to find ways to contain wildfires that could burn up the park if not prevented in time. According to an Abiotic Scientist, Tercia Strydom, satellite technology employed in the KNP, has played a huge role in containing fires that could have been started by either visitors, lightning, or even poachers. Strydom also explained that fires needed to be allowed to fulfil its ecological role by regular burning, but these need to be controlled. “Fire is a part of the natural ecosystem, and

The Hoedspruit Town Watch advised the public to be vigilante after a few local shops fell victim to scammers in Hoedspruit over the past week. In a report issued on Wednesday morning, the 6th of June, the Town Watch warned the public about their ongoing battle against who they call the ‘EFT guys’. It was reported that a group of suspects who possess the technology to alter proof of payment notifications, hit the Kamogelo Tourism Centre and Spar area in Hoedspruit. The suspects allegedly enter the shop, and request to pay via EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer). They enter a business transaction and overpay via EFT after which send a proof of payment, and demand the extra money back. According to reports these unknown individuals have already dealt a significant blow to shops in Phalaborwa prior to targeting Hoedspruit. In one of the comments on social media, the individuals also attempted their luck with Splinters Hoedspruit, however, were unlucky as Splinters did not accept EFT payments. Hoedspruit Town Watch believes the suspects might be heading to the Wildlife Estate Center next and if they do happen to go into any shop, the farm watch or town watch should be contacted immediately.

modation whilst having a smoke, on the 26th of June. The Skukuza Golf Club via their social media issued an update stating that although the injuries sustained were serious, they were relieved that the staffer was set to make a full recovery. “The Club has ensured that he is able to get the best care possible and that his family receive the necessary emotional and financial support while he recovers,” read the statement. According to them, given the sensitive medical nature of the incident they have chosen to respect their colleague’s privacy and not publish his name. More reports from employees within the park have suggested that complaints of the roaming animal were logged with the park prior the attack, however nothing came out of it. The South African National Parks has since deployed a team to track the animal.

when we start controlled fires here in the Kruger, we uses weather forecasting technology to predict which direction it would head,” stated Strydom. She also said that the Kruger National Park, were mapping fires every month using satellite images. “We have one satellite called Modis which has two satellites (Aqua and Terra) that circle the globe twice daily and gives us imagery of the park so we can exactly know where the fire is burning.” According to her, another satellite, The Sentinel, is able to detect a fire in an area as small as 10 square metres. MODIS can only detect a fire if it grows larger than a standard football field.

PNHF rescued a Journalist prevents theft second Hyena ■ Billy Sibuyi Another juvenile Spotted Hyena was found with a cable snare around its neck and reported to the Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation (PNHF) in one of the reserves in Phalaborwa. Wasting no time at all, the PNHF volunteers spent an entire Friday, the 1st of July, dedicated to tracking the animal and removing the snare. This was the second hyena caught in a snare in the same reserve, in less than two weeks. Daily, hundreds of wire snares are put out by poachers across South Africa. The specific reserve is know to this publication. The wire snares are used to trap animals for food, but they’re also set by poachers to capture other wildlife destined for the bushmeat trade and quite often these snares kill or maim wild animals, posing a considerable challenge to conservation efforts. To save this hyena, the vet, Dr Rita Piso, from Mangata Veterinary Services in Hoedspruit, headed out to the reserve with the PNHF and used recordings of a distressed prey and an impala bait to attract the injured animal. The snare was safely removed from the hyena’s neck, its wound treated, and a reversal drug administered to wake it up before setting the animal free. According to Eugene Troskie, from the PNHF, snaring poses a two-fold threat to large carnivores: indirectly by severely reducing prey populations and directly by inadvertently snaring carnivores as a by-catch. He said that the impact of snares on wildlife was devastating as snares are placed in an area of high animal activity and they cause suffering, pain, severe injury, and death in caught animals. Research also showed that snaring was becoming an increasing threat to wildlife populations across the continent and there is evidence to suggest that snares are probably among the highest killers of wildlife in Africa.
■ Billy Sibuyi One would expect a first responder to an accident scene to be assisting the injured and making phone calls to emergency personnel. However, this was not the case for one particular truck driver, who being first to the scene of an accident on the R40, could not help himself as he took a laptop bag and hid it further away from the accident. A Bulletin journalist happened to be driving on the same stretch of road on Tuesday morning, the 5th of July, when he encountered a badly damaged Renault Kwid on the other side of the fence alongside the R40 with the fence still intact. Our journalist immediately alerted rescue care paramedics, and whilst waiting for their arrival, attempted to keep what looked like three occupants calm as all three seemed to be walking confusedly in the bush. One of the three disappeared further into the bush and calling out to him, responded by saying he was not leaving, and he eventually returned to the scene. It was after his return, that our journalist learned that the man was not an occupant of the small car which had somehow cleared the fence, hit and displaced a huge boulder before coming to a stop against some trees. This man was a truck driver, who told Bulletin that he witnessed the driver of the Renault lose control after a tyre blew out which
sent the vehicle flying over the fence into the bush. When the paramedics arrived on the scene, the truck driver left, and they reported that the two individuals had suffered minor injuries but would need to be transported to the hospital for further check-ups. It was at that moment, that one of the occupants of the vehicle told our journalist that he was travelling from Polokwane to Hoedspruit for work and requested the paramedics collect his laptop from the boot before transporting him. Checking the vehicle’s boot, the paramedic found no laptop. The injured driver insisted, which then caused the journalist to retrace the steps of the truck driver into the bush where he discovered the laptop hidden under some leaves. Both occupants had sustained moderate injuries and were stabilized on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital. The driver of the truck had not been questioned about the incident, but police are investigating.

Oh how the mighty have fallen ■ Jeff Jackson The fifth monthly Bulletin Quiz Night brought with it another upset on the evening as the usual suspects were finally dethroned off their victory perch. It was a cold and gloomy Thursday evening when the cranial cavaliers descended upon the unsuspecting High Grove Lodge which rather recently became the preferred battleground for all things challenging. With resident quiz master duo, Joe and Riaan, unable to attend the intellectual gathering, the hosts had to call in the services of undercover agent Annemieke Osmers to handle microphone duties. T’was a task this Dance Place tutor handled with the utmost professionalism given her natural affinity for performing to a crowd. The rumbling of the fireplaces were silenced by the roars of laughter and not-so-silent disapproval of the teams as they valiantly dueled for their spot in the top three. The slightly perplexing quartet (The Animaniacs) comprised of Naomi and James Excell, and Hannerie and Deon van Tonder (who had undergone a slue of divorces, remarriages, and name changes in the previous rounds of this almost excessively popularized event) seemed to have met their match. And this time it would have nothing to do with handsomeness. Eventually it was “Die Bittereinders” with Phillip and Anandi de Villiers, Natasha Wiid en Lohandré Jacobs who emerged as the victors on the night. Luntonia and Animaniacs took the second and third places respectively with Beetle Juice in fourth. Be sure to join us for the sixth installment of this fantastic, way better-thanNetflix-and-chill evening on the 28th of July when we take a trip Around the World. Incidentally, if you haven’t figured it out yet, that trip will start at High Grove Lodge at precisely 18:00. Die Bittereinders with Anandi and Phillip de Villiers, Natasha Wiid en Lohandré Jacobs was the winning team.
Amen!

geen lopies en Njabulo Maseko wie net vier kon aanteken, sommer vroeg terug kleedkamers toe gestuur was.

TOP GOALS ON OUR LOCAL TURF ■ Joe Dreyer
Tzaneen played host to the prestigious North Region B U/18 Girls hockey tournament this past week. The tournament saw the best girls’ teams from six provinces converge on the pristine Astro pitch at Merensky High School between Tuesday, the 5th of July and Friday the 8th of July to battle out for the top honours. Teams from as far as Kwazulu-Natal, South Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North-West Province, and the Northern Free State made the trip to the subtropic bushveld where they would face the local lasses from team Limpopo. Team Limpopo held their own against the visitors in some of the toughest matches played on local soil. In their first game against the Northern Free State the local girls in fiery red secured a one goal victory before defeating KZN Inland by two goals in a game that ended 3-1 in their favour. The following day the girls faced their first and most significant defeat when they lost 5-0 to South Gauteng. Later that evening however they took on North West and won by a single goal. On Thursday morning, at the time of going to print, Limpopo had played their second last match of the tournament to a 2-2 draw against the Mpumalanga B and were scheduled to take on Mpumalanga C in the last game of the day. We will publish the results of these games in our digital paper tomorrow (Saturday, 9th of July) and in next week’s edition.
