In a video shared with Bulletin, several ‘happy’ employees are seen taking photos with the leopard. The Head Ranger, Cathy Dreyer, stated that since the first incident every effort was made to capture the leopard but without success. “Given the location of the incident, we suspect that the destroyed leopard is the same animal responsible for the first attack, but we can never be sure. Residents and employees must be extra vigilant and avoid walking alone at all times,” she said. The leopard was delivered to the State Vets to undertake a postmortem. Jerry Mabena, the CEO of Motsamayi Tourism Group, who are the owners of Kruger Shalati and Kruger Station, also said that they were shocked by this tragic incident and were very relieved that their colleague survived this ordeal.

Child (9)drowns A nine-year-old boy who entered the Kruger National Park as a day visitor with his family tragically drowned on Saturday, the 16th of July. The South African National Parks (SANParks) management conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the family of the nine-year-old who drowned while visiting the Kruger National Park (KNP). The incident took place at the Skukuza day visitor area late in the afternoon and according to reports from the security officer, he noticed the deceased floating in the pool while he was doing his rounds in the area. The security officer reportedly jumped into the pool, pulled the youngster out, and performed CPR on him whilst waiting for medical assistance. However, the patient was pronounced deceased by the Skukuza Residential Doctor who tended to the incident. The South African Police Services (SAPS) were notified, and their forensics team removed the body after collecting evidence they needed at the scene. An inquest docket has been opened by the police and the results of the investigation will be communicated to the next of kin in due course. The names of the family members and the deceased are being withheld for privacy.

A second leopard attack in the Kruger National Park has drawn the line in the sand of how long it takes the park to deal with a troublesome animal. An employee of the Shalati Concession was attacked by a leopard whilst enroute to work on Sunday morning, the 17th of July. After fighting off the animal, whilst shouting for assistance, the leopard ran off and disappeared into the surrounding bush, leaving the lodge employee with deep lacerations and in a traumatic state. He was rushed to the Skukuza residential doctor for medical treatment. According to the SANParks, it is understood that the injuries sustained by the Shalati employee were not life threatening. This is not the first time a leopard attacked a per-

son in the KNP, as in 2003 a nine-year-old boy was killed by a leopard whilst on his way home. Nor is this attack the first one this year, as the same leopard attacked another employee, at the Skukuza Golf Club on the 26th of June. Since then, the Park suggested that they deploy a team to track the animal, but were unfortunate in finding it as it attacked again. Reports from employees within the park suggest that there were complaints launched with the park prior the first attack, however nothing came out of it. After the attack on the second employee, the KNP said that an operation was immediately launched by the Rangers Corps and the Airwing to search the immediate vicinity for the animal. “It was spotted 30 metres from where the incident took place and was duly destroyed,” said the Park.

A hippo was hit in Phalaborwa town last week Friday at President Kruger Street just in line with De Freyn Street. Surprisingly, this intersection is not far from President Steyn, where conservationists have always asked the municipality to erect speed humps as speeding motorists along that stretch of road have killed several animals in the past. Luckily, according to reliable sources, both the driver of the vehicle and the hippo did not suffer serious injuries as the hippo was reported to have run away after the accident and has not been seen again, whilst the vehicle’s airbags were not deployed. This is not the first time an accident between a vehicle and an animal has occurred in that area according to the Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation (PNHF). “In the past couple of years we’ve had multiple vehicle collisions with hippo and other animals. Several of these animals were killed in these accidents including a Cape Clawless Otter, African Civet, Porcupine, Genets, Baboon, Duiker, Bushbuck, Sharp’s Grysbok and many others.”

If left unchecked, according to Eugene Troskie, that they have already moved through the outskirts a director at PNHF, reckless driving will become of town. an even greater threat to the biodiversity of Phal“Don’t walk, jog or cycle early morning, late afteraborwa, and it is for this reason that the PNHF said noon or at night in areas where the animals were that people should slow their driving speed down spotted recently, keep pets inside at night and don’t at night, especially in areas with dense vegetation leave children unattended,” concluded Troskie. next to the road. “Certain areas have been problematic, especially the bottom of Pres Steyn, close to Spar, Hendrick van Eck, Koper Road and Spekboom Road,” said Troskie. He said this in light of the lioness that was seen over the weekend in town and the two leopard sightings that were reported in the past two weeks. He also mentioned that the animals were not seen again since then, increasing the possibility A lion that was spotted near the airport by a motorist.

Old cemetery gates stolen ■ Joe Dreyer Tzaneen town has three cemeteries situated within its borders, the oldest of which is situated behind Tzaneen Crossing shopping centre between the taxi rank and the Caltex fuelling station in Danie Joubert Street. The cemeteries in Tzaneen and their upkeep falls on the priorities list of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s (GTM) Parks Department. The Parks Department in turn falls under the management of the director of Community Services, Alec Nkuna (who served as the acting municipal manager following the resignation of Thapelo Matlala in September 2021) who reports to the current municipal manager, Donald Mhangwana who took office a few months ago. Failing in their mandate to maintain order in cemeteries as per their own bylaws, the oldest of the three cemeteries, known as Tzaneen Cemetery, has fallen into complete disrepair with the remaining two only being maintained because of public participation.

This week, DA Ward Councillor for Ward 15, Chrizelle Dreyer, accompanied the centre management of Tzaneen Crossing centre to the Tzaneen Cemetery for an oversight visit following complaints received from local business owners regarding the state of the site. “What I saw there quite simply cannot be adequately described in words. It was heart breaking to see human excrement on graves, hundreds of broken beer bottles and used condoms all over the site. No visible cleaning has been done there and vegetation control also seems to be a thing of the past,” said Dreyer. During the initial hard lockdown at the start of the 2019 Covid pandemic, Bulletin paid a visit to the cemetery during a live show where we documented the state of the cemetery and requested the assistance of our viewers in cleaning up the grounds. At the time it was not possible to gain access to the graveyard as the keys to the gates were held by the management of the car dealer situated just next to it. Those gates have in the meantime been stolen. The graveyard now stands open to the public who have used it as a thoroughfare to and from the taxi rank and Danie Joubert Street. A clear footpath has formed from one end of the cemetery to the other. Vagrants have made their home in one corner, and it is evident that the local prostitutes have found solace behind the cover what is left of the concrete-slab boundary fence. The current situation at Tzaneen Cemetery is in breach of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality Cemetery Bylaws chapter 7 (24) which states that no person may enter or leave any cemetery except by means of the gates provided; and (25.2) which states that no person my remain in the cemetery after 19:00; and (27) which says that no person may destroy or damage any gravestone, monument or path in a cemetery; and (29) which forbids unseemly acts. The bylaws make mention of the “Officer in Charge” which in this instance is the person responsible for the enforcing of the bylaws and this instance it would appear to be the director Nkuna. The Ward Councillor has sent a report to the municipal manager, the director of community services and the office of the mayor concerning this matter and requested immediate action be taken to rectify the matter and restore the cemetery to a place where loved ones can pay their respects to their deceased. Bulletin has also requested feedback on the matter from the municipality and at the time of going to print had received none.

Is GTM oblivious? ■ Joe Dreyer

Though the cemetery situated along the Agatha Road towards the new industrial area just outside Tzaneen is in good nick, the sewerage line running parallel to this site is currently pouring hundreds of litres of raw sewerage into the stream below it. The stream which in turn runs into the Letaba River. The open manhole photographed below, has reportedly been overflowing for close on half a year and the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s water and sewerage team have not noticed. At the time of going to print, the situation had not been rectified despite having been reported to the relevant de-

partment. The lack of service delivery and in particular, regular site inspections, by the GTM is cause for concern and it quite simply is not enough to request the public to report these matters when noticed. It cannot be expected of the public to spend their days driving through their town looking for potholes, burst pipes, blocked manholes, broken streetlights, vandalized cemeteries and illegal street vendors to report to the municipality. The public is not responsible for ensuring maintenance and enforcing the bylaws. Therefore, there is supposed to be a municipal inspection team. Consequently, residents pay their rates and taxes.

Truck hits bakkie kills seven, injures many more ■ Billy Sibuyi “I was pulled back and before I could scream ‘hey’ it had already happened”. These were the words of one lucky survivor of the horrific accident that claimed eight lives on Thursday evening the 14th of July. The accident occurred on the Selwane Road (D3260) when a Nissan 1400 was hit by a heavy truck and then a minibus taxi. A Nissan 1400 bakkie carrying 13 young boys on the back, had become stuck next to the road and the boys had jumped off to push the vehicle in an effort to jump start it. During this effort the vehicle took and restarted afterwhich the 13 boys raced to jump back onto the back of the now moving vehicle. During this race the boys scuffled and clammered in order to jump back on board and secure a seat. It was during this scuffle that one of the boys was pushed out of the way by a friend who jumped ahead of him to steal his spot on the back. This action pushed the young boy away from the vehicle which was struck by a truck a few seconds later. The truck swept the entire bakkie and its occupants up off the road, before a taxi travelling in the opposite direction collided with them

head on, killing eight people and injuring the rest. The 13 boys were all travelling to an initiation school in Selwane, ahead of the initiates exiting the following day. According to the reports seven people died on the scene, one person died on the way to hospital, and the rest of the people were injured, and taken to Maphutha Malatji hospital in Namakgale. Speeding and reckless driving was cited as possible causes of the accident and the road was closed for a period as the forensics team finalized their analyses. The Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, Polly Boshielo, sent messages of condolences to the families of the deceased. “We are saddened by these fatalities and send our deepest condolences to the families that are affected in this tragic incident. We plead with motorists to obey the rules of the road, for them to arrive at their respective destinations alive and sound,” she stated. “It cannot be right that motorists become impatient to a point where lives are lost in this manner. We have to, at all times, obey and follow rules to the letter. It’s the only way to arrive alive and save lives.” The Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Mayor, Merriam Malatji, accompa-

nied by the Speaker, Oliver Mabunda, Acting Municipal Manager, Dr Kgoshi Lucas Pilusa, Ward Councilors, as well as, the Acting Lulekani Police Station Commander, Captain Shadrack Dlamini, paid a courtesy visit to families of the eight children who lost their lives during the horrific car accident. According to the municipality, the bereaved families are considering a mass funeral to allow relatives and friends to have enough time to mourn and give their children a dignified send off. The mayor said that the Municipality was committed in supporting these families during this time. “We are here as the leadership of the Municipality to provide support and comfort to these families. In addition, the Municipality will continue to work closely with these families through our Ward Councilors until the last day.” The mayor also stated that it was clear that “The mass funeral is in line with the families wishes not that of the Municipality. However, the Municipality will respect and support any decision taken by these families. The official service will take place at the Lulekani Community Hall on Saturday. The Municipality said it would also coordinate social workers and psychologists to help survivors with extensive counselling.

Joubert switches gears a notch ■ Roelof de Jonge The 5th and 6th rounds of the MRF Tyres sponsored South African National Rally Championship (NRC) were concluded on Friday and Saturday the 15th and 16th of July with the Eastern Cape Algoa Rally in Jeffreys Bay’s Longmore Forest. The current South African NRC drivers champion from Letsitele, Theuns Joubert, partnered by co-driver Schalk van Heerden in their Salom Labour Brokers Toyota Yaris S2000, kept his title hopes for 2022 and his defense of his crown a welcome boost. Joubert finished second in the 5th round on the Friday and went on to claim outright victory in the 6th round the following day. The South African NRC protagonists, Joubert and Van Heerden, and their title rivals, Chris Coertse and Greg Godrich in their Rally Technic Hyundai, benefited from the mechanical misfortunes of rivals Guy Botterill and Simon Vacy-Lyle’s with their Gazoo Racing Toyota Starlet.

The Hyundai pair took the win in the 5th round with Joubert and van Heerden settling for second place. Joubert and van Heerden hit back on the Saturday to claim the win in the 6th round with Coertse and Godrich coming home in second place. Botteril and Vacy-Lyle bounced back from their earlier steering troubles to move up to. Unfortunately for Botterill and Vacy-Lyle, they hit trouble again which allowed Joubert and Van Heerden back up to second. By beating Friday’s round winners, Coertse and Godrich, means that there is still no change at the top of the championship log as Coertze continues to lead Joubert by a 16-point margin. And Botterill is still close enough behind to pose a threat to the leaders. Joubert will now prepare for his home rally as the MRF Tyres South African National Rally Championship moves back north for the first national rally in 16 years in Tzaneen with the NTT Tzaneen Rally from the 12th until the 13th of August.

‘n Man met Hollandse houtskoene kom ingestap.

Theuns Joubert and Schalk van Heerden was the overall winners of the 6th round of the National Rally Championship.

De Kock beaam hom deesdae as ‘n verkopebestuurder by ‘n gevestigde kweekhuis in Gauteng.
