JoJo Tanks have cropped up in the backyards of households all across the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality in recent weeks. This amid complete silence on a workable solution from the leadership of the all-but-functional local municipality. It has been more than a week since the faucets ran dry in areas of Phalaborwa. One of the most affected areas, Bougainvillea Park, have had dry spells of up to 24 hours straight. According to resident Saartjie Maarthuisen, they had been without water for more than two weeks with no end in sight. Ward councilor, Sybrandt de Beer, has even gone to the extent of writing a letter listing the town’s grievances to the DA’s shadow minister for water and sanitation, Leon Basson, who in

The Police in Lulekani conducted a prayer sermon at the GRC Spiritual Church in Hectorville Section on Sunday, 24th of July, to ensure partnership policing was well coordinated within the Lulekani precinct. The sermon which was led by Pastor Maluleke Lulekani and Mopani District Men for Change Chairperson, Reoh Mabunda, was well attended by different community members. Sergeant Mabunda enlightened the congregation on the seriousness of sexual offences, Gender Based Violence (GBV), Children’s Rights, Domestic Violence (DV), mob-justice, and illegal mining. He also gave the congregants the contact details of the police management and the Community Service Center (CSC), whilst also sharing safety tips to prevent burglary and theft. The Lulekani SAPS Women’s Network Public Relations Officer (PRO), Cst Nkhensani Nkuna together with Hectorville Community Policing Forum (CPF), Sub-Forum Chairperson, Steve Mkhatswa, were among those who attended the event. In an unrelated matter, the Springbok Group with its CSI division, Enock Mathebula Foundation, joined the national Mandela Day celebrations on Monday, the 18th of July. The employees dedicated their 67 minutes to painting classrooms at N’wasorini Primary School in Lulekani. The CEO, Enock Mathebula, encouraged everyone to always make a difference, to give back to the community, and to answer the call to action. “Never forget where you come from, be the change in your community, keep on spreading the spirit of ubuntu. I am thrilled that my team joined the initiative, thank you,” said Mathebula. The school Principal, Stephen Matlala, expressed his gratitude and thanked everyone who took part at the school. “I am really grateful to be one of the schools that were chosen by this incredible company to revamp our school.”
Animal rights activists and some conservationists in the Mopani region are outraged over a video of several SANParks employees repeatedly hitting a dead leopard. The leopard was euthanized last week after it attacked yet another concession employee in the Kruger National Park, whilst on his way to work. The leopard, according to several sources within the park, was reported several times to the authorities but was only captured and killed after it attacked a second person. After the leopard was euthanized, overjoyed employees decided to hit the dead leopard, which according to them, gave them sleepless nights. However, SANParks has now strongly condemned the behavior depicted in images and captured on video clips which have since been shared over social media platforms. “Such actions are contrary to the ethos of the organization whose primary goal is to conserve biodiversity and act as the custodian of our wildlife,” said the park in a statement. Isaac Phaahla, the spokesperson of SANParks, told Bulletin that investigations were underway and that statements had been taken from Rangers and other employees present. The incident arose after rangers euthanized a leopard on the 17th of July 2022, and the leopard was being retrieved to be taken for a post-mortem. The leopard was shot just 30 meters away from where an employee from Shalati Concession, en route to work, was attacked by a leopard.

turn contacted Dr Sean Phillips, Director General of the Department of Water and Sanitation, who promised to look into the matter. Earlier this year, Phalaborwa experienced the same dry spells and the origin of these water issues were eventually traced back to the municipality’s failure to settle their account at Lepelle Northern Water. The municipality’s silence on the matter has led to residents believing this to be a repeat of the exact situation. “I spoke to the acting Municipal Manager (MM) at the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, and he said he was awaiting a response from his counterpart at the Mopani District. Apparently, the MM from Mopani will contact Lepelle to find out what the problem is,” de Beer said. At the time of going to print, Councilor De Beer was in a council meeting in his attempts to gain some answers. Source: www.dwa.gov.za Information updated: 25/07/2022

This was the second such attack on a worker employed in the park since 26 June and was in the same area as the previous attack. According to Phaahla, in line with SANParks policies and Standard Operating Procedures on the management of damage-causing animals, a decision was taken to euthanize the leopard to safeguard human life. Phaahla also said that the park had taken steps to positively identify all individuals in the video of the staff attacking the animal’s carcass, and he confirmed that four of the nine implicated people were SANParks employees of which, three were rangers. Three other individuals were employed by concessions who operate in the park, and the last one is employed as an environmental monitor. “The ninth person who was filmed striking the euthanized leopard was visiting the Park and is not a SANParks employee. SANParks knows his identity and is taking legal advice on sanctions to be imposed on him,” stated Phaahla. “On the basis of the evidence received, one employee has already been suspended pending disciplinary action, and the line management is finalizing their approach with respect to other employees who may have transgressed SANParks policies and code of conduct.” The state vet’s post-mortem report confirmed that the cause of death was from bullet wounds and not from any other actions. Phaahla also said that SANParks was committed to managing the outcomes in an open and transparent manner whilst respecting the requirements of all legislation pertaining to this regrettable incident.

Release that troublesome tension through Thai ■ Advertorial Ironically, the very popular “Thai Massage” originated in India over 2 500 years ago and the benefits it carries is largely responsible for this. These benefits are now available to residents of Tzaneen thanks to the healthy obsession Sarie Vermaak shares with her husband Stoffel, for the specialist technique. Thai massage can benefit your health in many ways, most of which are supported by scientific studies. If you have, for example, migraines or experience regular tension headaches, traditional Thai massage can ease your symptoms almost instantaneously. In a few smaller studies involving patients with chronic headaches, the researchers found that Thai massage reduced the intensity of both the migraines and the headaches. In Thailand the effects of a Thai massage treatment on a group of 120 people with nonspecific lower back pain were researched. Half of this test group was treated with Thai massage and the other half with conservative management techniques that included joint mobilization (a technique that involves applying pressure), hot packs, and manual stretching of the painful areas.
Both the groups were treated twice a week over a period of four weeks, and both groups had significant pain relief. Other studies found that Thai massage reduces back pain associated with trigger points (which are tight, painful muscle clusters) in the upper back. “My husband and I just love Thai massages and during a recent trip, we had the most wonderful experience to date. By chance, the masseuse offered me her number along with a request for employment. We arrived back home and she gave me a call which led to me deciding to open a genuine Thai Massage parlour at my lodge,” explained Vermaak. “And now we get to offer the best Thai Massage experience right here on our doorstep; and I get a lifetime of massages without having to travel.” The official opening of the new parlour was held during an intimate gathering at Arbor Park Lodge on Friday, the 23rd of July. It was during this quant affair that those in attendance were introduced to the two professional masseuses, Anna Mashao and Margaret Ledwaba who would be taking care of the troublesome tensions that may ail Tzaneen’s upper and lower backs. So, if you need some professional TLC, be sure to contact the parlour on 065 525 1015 or 015 307 1831 to book your session.

Zoë off to play hockey in the USA ■ Joe Dreyer A young sports star from Tzaneen is currently sitting on an airplane heading towards the United States. She is young, fit, determined and eager to start her career as an international field hockey player. But right now, Zoë Bergmann must deal with the butterflies first. At just 19 years old, the former Ben Vorster High School’s First Girls hockey team captain caught the eyes of a few university scouts over in America. She was offered bursaries to join one of these institutions on a field hockey scholarship and decided to make the agricultural town of Gaffney in South Carolina her new home. There, she will be attending the University of Limestone for four years. It all came about when the Bergmann family were browsing the internet for international opportunities for their daughter. They came across the Next College Student Athlete (NCSA) platform and submitted all the necessary documentation to get the process started. Next College Student Athlete is a for-profit organization that connects middle and high school student-athletes with college coaches. NCSA teaches middle and high school student-athletes about the college recruiting process. The NCSA Athletic Recruiting team consists of coaches, scouts and former college athletes. “We want the best for our daughter, as every parent does, and so we searched for a way to obtain an international scholarship for her,” explained dad, Reenen. “We landed on the page of a local agent who was unable to assist but referred us to the NCSA which helps thousands of youngsters all around the world to reach their dreams of international exposure. The rest is as they say, history.” Though hockey is her favourite sport, Zoë is a natural born athlete and has excelled in various disciplines. She blames this on genetics as both her parents, Reenen and Sanet, have in the past, and still do, compete at provincial level in tennis and ringball. Sanet having achieved Springbok colours in the latter. “I guess you could call it ‘good stock’ if you like,” Zoë chuckled. “I like all sports and have always been supported by both my parents in any endeavour no matter how fleeting. I am a pretty good middle distance and hurdles athlete as well, but I didn’t really like those disciplines. I much preferred javelin, discuss and long jump when it
came to athletics.” On the netball courts is where Zoë truly shined according to her dad however. She captained the Ben Vorster First Team whilst in High School and was a formidable defender given her height and athleticism. She was chosen to represent her province at the same time as she was selected for the Limpopo hockey squad and so she chose the astro over the concrete. In total, this youngster wore the provincial jacket for tennis, hockey and squash. “And then my mom told me about the boxing fitness hosted at Champ’s Boxing Academy and I thought it would be a great challenge as it is something that I had not ever done before in my life. So my dad and I joined the gym and I immediately fell in love with the sport, despite the fact that I really don’t want to be punched in the face!” Coach Gerhard Rossouw said that Zoë showed
Zoë Bergmann
natural ability and a level of skill that he had not seen in a youngster in many years. According to him, if she decided to climb into the ring, he had no doubt that she would make the national team in her first year. Alas, the pull of the hockey field proved one too strong for the promising young warrior (she featured in a special video shot on location for Women’s Month which can be viewed on Bulletin’s Facebook page next week). Tzaneen and Bulletin wishes Zoë all the best for her future in this exciting new venture and we will touch base with her dad at the Tzaneen Tennis Club regularly for updates on her progress. Nuwe hoof by SAVF

■ Roelof de Jonge Lowveld Academy’s Primary and Secondary School took advantage of the mid-winter weather and made for the golf course for their annual Golf Day on the 25th of June at Drakensig Golf Club near Hoedspruit. This year’s event, themed “Drive for Hope”, is one of Lowveld Academy’s annual fundraising events. The purpose for this year’s golf day was part of the school’s fundraising project to finish a first-rate sport field and complex on its premises in Huilboerboom Street. Over 50 Golfers, comprising of the local community and business owners, filled up their score sheets on a day filled with many shenanigans, competitions and, of course, a great round of golf. Golf club members came in with top scores, as expected with their skillset, but were also given a run for their money by many of the Lowveld Academy supporters. According to Tilana Harding, spokesperson for Lowveld Academy, the golf day was an encouraging example of how the community of Hoedspruit and surrounding businesses assist to make events and occasions such as these a great success. “In fact, the support has properly exceeded all expectations our organising team had set for
this event”, said Harding. The feedback from the golfers and guests who attended the LA “Drive for Hope” challenge was extremely positive, with the principal of Lowveld Academy, Gert Rautenbach, commenting; “it warms my heart to see so many of our parents and benefactors once again stand by us to grow our school and enjoy what we have to offer. It is a debt we can only hope to repay by excelling in every opportunity this affords us.” Lowveld Academy thanked all their sponsors for their amazing turnout and support, in the process not just helping build a top performing school for their own kin, but also allowing for the development and successes of many more students.
Aron van den Borre, a nine-year-old from the Kingfisher Private School in Phalaborwa, was crowned the new South African champion when he won the national Schools Mountain Bike (MTB) Cross Country (XCO) championship. Competing in the Nipper division for boys U/9, Van den Borre clinched the SA crown at the national championship that was held on Saturday the 2nd of June in Bloemfontein. The race was held over a tough hilly course and consisted of five laps with a summit of 48 metres which tested the endurance of the riders. The best riders from each province were competing for the famous “Red National Jersey”, with nearly 30 riders on the starting line. The first lap was a battle for position with some riders hav-
ing to throw in the towel after a few wipeouts which reduced the field. Van den Borre managed to avoid the first lap mayhem and crossed the finish line in first position with a time of 22min and 22sec. In his quest for the SA title, this astute rider won the Limpopo Championship after being the overall winner following his undefeated four race siege. He carried this form into the National Series where he had two wins and a third place to become the overall SA MTB XCO cup winner. Van den Borre would like to extend his sincerest gratitude to every person and institution who contributed to his successes.
Aron van den Borre after winning the gold medal and with that the SA Championship in the boys Nipper division.
