One man was stoned to death while another was hospitalised after a violent altercation between residents of Nkowankowa and Lenyenye at a tavern on Sunday afternoon. The police confirmed that a brawl erupted at a social lounge in the Lenyenye CBD during which one man was seriouosly wounded and another killed. Nobody was arrested in connection with the matter, and the incident has sparked tribal tensions between the residents of Lenyenye and Nkowankowa. This comes at a time where several local drinking holes came under attack from gun toting thugs which resulted in the death of several people. According to members of the community who witnessed the incident, several bakkies arrived in the CBD loaded with people who upon arrival demand-
ed the immediate closure of the lounge owned by a Somalian national. An eyewitness explained what happened. “When the patrons opposed the order, a scuffle broke out where patrons were attacked with sticks and stones. This led to random community members joining in the fight which escalated and soon moved to the parking lot of the establishment,” the witness said. “Beer bottles were replaced with bricks and stones as weapons and as a result one man was lying down dead while the other was rushed to hospital for medical attention. Very few people from the Lenyenye community sustained injuries despite having been beaten.” He added that the police arrived a long time after the incident was reported. This left scars in the community as it was thought that the tavern was targeted because it was owned by a foreigner. Community leaders were on Wednes-

Five months ago one of Phalaborwa’s local heroes was involved in a car accident whilst tending to an emergency near the Mopani TVET college. Anton Kellerman is a qualified firefighter and basic first aider and one of the first responders to most accidents and other emergencies in that precinct. He also serves as chairperson for the Phalaborwa CPF. Kellerman’s vehicle was completely written off in the accident and now his insurance is refusing to payout citing that the accident occurred whilst he was tending to an emergency. “I continue to pay my monthly insurance installments, but they can’t pay for the damage,” he said. Because he does not receive an income to be a responder, he does not have the financial means to repair his vehicle without assistance. Kellerman who has a full-time job during the day, working as a safety and security manager at one of the mines, and assists during the night with emergencies ranging from fires, medical problems, accidents and crime- related matters, has now appealed to the public to assist him in repairing his vehicle. Several businesses and a score of residents have already started assisting him to pay for certain parts of the vehicle, however there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. The total damage to the vehicle is estimated at around R140 000. “It is painful not to be able to do what I love, which is helping people in need, or in vulnerable situations because of not having transport to reach out to them,” explained Kellerman. To assist him in getting back to what he does best, please contact Anton on 084 226 6000.

day still calling for calm as the bereaved family were to collect the belongings of their loved one and it was feared they could be attacked by the community members. However, it happened without an incident. A hawker in the CBD who requested anonymity said that the fight was fuelled by the closure of a tavern owned by a South African in Nkowankowa for flouting the trading rules. It was then that the community was mobilised to close all taverns owned by foreigners. He said that matters broke loose when a former councillor who was a patron at one of the taverns, was attacked. There are fears of more violence this coming weekend as after the funeral people could be tempted to seek revenge. A week ago, a man was killed by a mob after he was caught robbing patrons of phones when they exited taverns in the same precinct.

A group of street vendors with their donors standing infront of one of the donated gazebo’s
■ Billy Sibuyi Two corporates from Phalaborwa have donated gazebos to a group of 20 street vendors in Phalaborwa’s CBD. These are the same street vendors that were removed from the pavements of the business district numerous times in the past. Palabora Mining Company (PMC) in partnership with a construction company, and the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality handed over gazebos to these street vendors last week Thursday, the 27th of October. Abby Ledwaba from PMC said that the gazebos would assist to protect hawkers from the infamous heat in Ba-Phalaborwa. “As leaders we have a strong interest in the secondary economy. These street vendors are the driving force of the local economy. We acknowledge what you are doing on the street to alleviate poverty. We need to applaud you for complying with the municipal by-laws,” he explained. Ledwaba said that the main aim behind the initiative was to support and encourage the registered street vendors to continue being self-sustainable through income generation as part of creating a livelihood for themselves and their families.
One of the street vendors that benefited from this initiative explained that she has been a street vendor for more than 10 years and because of financial constraints, was unable to build a small structure where she could sell her products”. Another beneficiary expressed that he was thankful for the gazebo, however, he had expected a bit more from these entities. “Myself for one would have loved to get business and entrepreneurship training which would assist me in growing my business, I feel like we need to be assisted with introductions to micro-lending institutions to enable us to access funding and expand our businesses.” Speaking on behalf of the Municipality, the mayor, Merriam Malatji, gave words of encouragement to the street vendors by narrating her journey before becoming a mayor. She said that she understood the daily challenges they were facing as she was once a street vendor too. “I am currently producing fresh vegetables that I harvest from my farm, my advice to you today is to never give up and I am confident that these gazebos will motivate you to keep pushing,” she said.

GTM admits Hawkers removed again “he is selling water” FOLLOW UP
■ Joe Dreyer In a breaking development in the ongoing water tanker saga that has plagued Tzaneen the past few years, the municipality has inadvertently admitted knowing that water meant to be freely distributed, is being sold to the poor. Not only did the GTM admit knowledge of this unethical act, but that they were aware that one of their senior employees was actively participating in and benefitting financially from this act. The employee in question was none other than the manager of the GTM’s Traffic Department, Johannes Malatji. In the past three weeks Bulletin uncovered evidence that Malatji owned two water tanker trucks which were regularly spotted at fire hydrants in Tzaneen drawing water and transporting it to the rural areas where it was reportedly resold by the litre, to those in dire need. At first the GTM’s spokesperson denied the accusation and claimed that they had no knowledge of Malatji’s involvement in the water debacle. Neville Ndlala, the head of communications at the GTM asked for proof. We sent him proof and he said that they would look into the matter. We also asked for an explanation as to why Malatji was allegedly not at work, yet receiving full pay. To this, Ndlala said that Malatji was in fact at work, but that he was booked off during the Covid pandemic because of his age putting him at risk. We then wanted clarity on why André Liversage was moved from his position as the manager the Licensing
department to head up Traffic. We wanted to know why this would be necessary if indeed Malatji was at his post. Ndlala said that Liversage was “only helping out” in the Traffic department, and that is where the information stopped. This week we again asked Ndlala for clarity on Malatji’s water tanker operations. Did Malatji have a tender with the municipality to deliver the water to the rural areas? “Me Malatji doesn’t have a tender with the Municipality, he just sells water like the other private tankers,” Ndlala replied. This single statement completely dismissed every other response, every other statement and every counter claim in defence of the municipality that was ever offered to Tzaneen’s ratepayers since the start of this saga. Admitting nonchalantly that the manager of the Traffic Department was actively involved in an act deemed illegal by the very municipality that employed him, and claiming that this same manager was still being paid a full salary despite this, should be viewed as an act of fraud against the ratepayers in this municipality. Further information has come to light which alleges that Limpopo Department of Education has a contract with Malatji for the hiring of VIP toilets for their events. At the time of going to print this information has not been verified, but we have sent a related inquiry to the GTM. Both the Freedom Front Plus and the Democratic Alliance have started looking into this new information and will be directing questions at the GTM’s Municipal Manager for answers. We will update this story as it unfolds.
■ Roelof de Jonge Illegal hawkers occupying the sidewalks of Tzaneen CDB area, specifically in Danie Joubert Street, were seen on Thursday the 3rd of November scampering as they gathered their goods and moved it away before law enforcement authorities arrived. Officials from the GTM Traffic department, the police and Tzaneen Neighbourhood and Community Watch embarked on another clean-up operation to remove the illegal street sellers. Some of the hawkers were initially adamant that it was their right to occupy space for selling their items as a way of earning an income, but the officials were having none of it, and if sellers could not provide a legitimate permit issued by the GTM, their goods were removed. Some of the makeshift tables that were left behind, were loaded onto a municipal truck by the officials and taken away. The clean-up did not just entail the removal of illegal
hawkers, but also noted illegal electrical connections that will be removed in due course by the municipality’s electrical department. According to the acting head of GTM’s Traffic Department, André Liversage, keeping the town’s pavements clean was an ongoing battle. According to Liversage, the area in front of Tzaneng Mall in Danie Joubert Street towards the corner of Agatha Street, is off limits for street sellers. It is evident that the authorities have made some inroads in keeping the sidewalks clean from hawkers occupying the space meant for pedestrians. Liversage said the illegal hawkers who took their goods and ran away, would simply wait for the departure of the authorities before returning to continue selling their wares. Yesterday’s operation was the third of its kind in just the last year and though temporary, the CBD once again seems less congested – a state that is certain to change with the arrival of Christmas.

The Chery on the motoring cake The popularity and sales of Chinese manufactured and imported vehicles in South Africa have increased significantly since first arriving on local shores a decade or so ago. One brand in particular, Chery, has seen major growth in the industry the last year and just recently opened its doors in Danie Joubert Street, Tzaneen. Such is the brand’s popularity that in the first week of August this year (2022), NAAMSA, the automotive business council in South Africa, announced Chery Motors as the new Top 10 passenger vehicle brand to be sold amongst South African consumers. The local Chery Dealership was the 65th to be opened in South Africa and with Dealer Principal Morné Simpson at the helm, is sure to continue bursting at the seams. Its current location is according to Simpson, only temporary with plans in place to relocate to a larger facility with a full equipped workshop and parts sales department just opposite the road in Danie Joubert Street. The bigger premises will allow them to showcase a wider range of their models and accommodate more of their customers without feeling crowded. Chery South Africa has officially reported its sales numbers to NAAMSA for the first time in July 2022. A mere eight months after it introduced its first SUV, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, into the local market. Chery entered the new vehicle market in late November 2021 with the Tiggo 4 Pro range. This model remains the most popular in their stable thanks to its highly competitive entry price and unmatched
level of specifications. The exciting news really, is that Chery announced in September that it would introduce three new models into the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro range, all with industry-leading levels of specifications and luxury. The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro joined the line-up in late February 2022, and the newest addition, the Tiggo 7 Pro, only landed on showroom floors a few months later in May. In July, the Tiggo 4 Pro range represented 689 units of the total 1 262 units sold. This ranks it in the top five best-selling SUVs in its segment. In total volume, it is followed by the Tiggo 7 Pro (372 units) and the flagship Tiggo 8 Pro (201 units). Both these luxury SUV’s now rank first in their respective segments, based on sales. Chery South Africa launched a special Legacy Customer Campaign in April this year. It has since actively invited customers who purchased a vehicle from an importer before Chery entered the market to join the Chery family and have their vehicles safely and comprehensively serviced at their local Chery dealer. Chery Motors have shown tremendous courage in the quality of their products, so much so that they offer for first time owners or loyal customers a 10 year or one-million-kilometre engine warranty. Morné Simpson and his team can be contacted on 015 590 1892 to arrange a test drive and make your new wheels the Chery on the 2022 Christmas cake.

Riders converge on Tzaneen for Reining ■ Roelof de Jonge
Sail on Frozen Shadow owned & ridden by Martella Van Zijl
Horse riders as far as from the Western Cape and Gauteng trotted down to Tzaneen for the first leg of the National Reining and Performance Horse South Africa Circuit’s Western Riding championships earlier this month. The event was hosted on Saturday and Sunday the 15th and 16th of October by Buckles and Boots Equestrian Club at Uitzoek Stables just outside Tzaneen. This first leg in Tzaneen was one of three held across South Africa to determine the national winners. Local rider, Gabbi de Carvalho and her horse Amarillo Sails Tomygun, made an excellent debut to the national circuit to win the Youth Novice Western Performance division. Diné Booysen on Cosmic Zeus was second and the third place went to Natalie Dos Ramos on Javta Lunar. This equestrian organization deemed the development of young riders as very important and were delighted to see the number of youths competing. For the folks who are not familiar with this form of horse riding; the riders compete in classes like Western Performance which basically simulate the movements of a working horse on a ranch. This includes trail and ranch riding patterns to display the
skillful movements of the riders and their horses. In the Reining class the riders are expected to complete a set of circled patterns, spins and sliding stops which is regarded by the competitors as one of the most difficult equestrian disciplines. David Beard on SD Gunners Last Secret took the honours in the Western Performance Adult Intermediate division with Julia Stoppel on Silky Rascal in second place and third sport went to Claire Beard on NJQ Double Smart Delta. The highest score of 72 in an individual Western Performance class was achieved by Dusan Janjic on Callaway Docs Superkid. The internationally recognized rider, all the way from the Western Cape, Jordan Wright du Plessis on SD Flash Yer Fancy Guns, won the Reining Adult division in fine style. David Beard with SD Gunners Last Secret was second and third was Claire Beard on NJQ Double Smart. Wright du Plessis on Flash had a sensational run, and his 74 points was the highest individual score of the day. The organizers thanked all the sponsors for their generous contributions of cash and prizes worth in the region of R100 000. Gratitude also went to the South African Quarter Horse Association for the SAQHA branded buckles donated and promotion of the versatile Quarter horse breed that is so popular amongst the equestrian fraternity.
We want to thank SAQHA for the promoting of this beautiful breed that we love so much! Each horse owner won a beautiful rosette & a stunning 1 st place - Arabesque Mizz Gunston owned by Martella Van Zijl 2 nd place - Arabesque Hollys Scoot & Doc owned by Martella Van Zijl 3 rd place - Philynn’s Catolena owned by Martella Van Zijl

The Trophy Toyota Stanford T20 cricket tournament provided for some exciting matches between Merensky, Ben Vorster, PHS and hosts Stanford Lake College this past weekend. The Round Robin styled playoff was hosted from Friday the 28th of October to Sunday the 29th of October when the finals were played. PHS met Ben Vorster in the finals after both teams won their respective matches convincingly against Merensky and Stanford the previous two days. Pietersburg would go on to win the tournament with nine wickets and become the first team to hoist the Stanford T20 trophy. It was always going to be a tough match as both rivals were notoriously strong sports schools, and on the cards appeared to be evenly matched as they headed out to the wicket. Ben Vorster won the toss and elect-
ed to bat first. A visibly motivated and charged up Pietersburg made no bones about wanting to go home and launched a devastating bowling attack. The deadly Zandré Hattingh (35 runs for 4 wickets) and Nicholas Oerlemans (12 runs for 3 wickets) claimed three wickets a piece before Michael Nel and Cilliers van der Merwe added a wicket each to the tally. Their impressive bowling limited Ben Vorster to 138/8 in their 20-over innings which was a target the PHS batsmen were all too eager to chase considering the 174 runs they racked up for just four wickets in their match against the hosts the day before. Ben Vorster’s batsmen put up a brave performance and despite being visibly rattled by the PHS blitzkrieg, Ruben Vosloo still proved a thorn in their side with his 35 runs off 33 balls, and Njabulo Maseko who held steady between the stumps with 29 runs from 36 balls. Gideon Goosen put in a valiant effort to score 22 runs off 23 balls. The mighty Greens took to the wicket for the start of their innings which Michael Nel opened with a six off the first ball. The first over saw PHS already on nine runs with Nel on eight and partner Nicholas Oerlemans on one. Nel knocked another six off the last ball of the over, and another one off the second ball in the second over. The opening partnership setup a run rate of 10 per over which PHS maintained until the 14th over when they eventually won the match on the fourth ball with the loss of only one wicket. Oerlemans stayed at the crease to the end and scored 54 runs off 44 balls which included five fours and a six. This performance landed him the Man of the Match award. Pietersburg’s opening batsman, Michael Nel, also batted steadily along and on 41 runs from 31 balls he was caught and bowled by Ben Vorster’s, Gideon Goosen. The other runs, 14 from 14 balls, came from the bat of Drian Hartslief.
