Controversy over new

The community of Hoedspruit are at logger heads about SANRAL’s proposed plan to build an interchange on the R40 in their town. The proposed plan of the new road which was widely spread over social media platforms, has the local town’s folk talking. Most residents are welcoming the proposed plan, while others believe it may have a longer lasting negative impact on the town.

Lizmari Wolmarans, a resident of Hoedspruit, posted on social media that upon request from several residents, a petition was created to request SANRAL to stop all planning for the R40 Interchange until further discussion and input via a fair public participation process.

Wolmarans stated that a concerns document had already been drafted and that the final updated document with everyone’s input, alternative suggestions, and concerns would be submitted together with the results from the petition by the end of November 2022.

A couple of residents opposed the petition, with some

stating that, the project was already addressed in public seating and that nobody raised a concern then, why should it change now?

Thabang Mkhawana wrote that, the mayor of Maruleng during the IDP presentation, talked about these developments and no one was against it. “Why are you recruiting people to stop such a good initiative?”

Promise Maila wrote that “We residents of Hoedspruit, we fully support the initiative, you tried to stop many developments in town but with this one you are going to fail. We struggle in the morning when we take kids to school, month end is even worse from Pick n Pay to the T-junction you take 30 minutes. The town has only one exit from the mini-complex and is very congested.”

However, Debby Thompson explained that the initiators behind the petition were not petitioning against sorting out the traffic congestions currently being faced, but were for the proposed changes to a new solution being implemented.

“What they are petitioning against is the current

solution being forced upon us. The current development presented is not for the benefit of the town but for the primary benefit of the trucks coming from the mines,” stated Thompson.

Thompson said that it was not for the benefit of the town and for residents to be able to easily access different areas of Hoedspruit, but it is primarily for the benefit of the trucks moving through Hoedspruit.

“This is what the petition is all about. We do need a solution and we want a solution, but we are not happy with this solution. There are various reasons why this particular solution is not great,” she stated.

According to her, the new plan would cut the entire town in to two halves, and that some businesses would be cut off and make it very difficult to funnel traffic to their businesses. It would also exasperate the hitch hiking problem as it would make it very difficult for those hitching rides to Phalaborwa and Acornhoek, to do so.

This is a developing story and Bulletin will follow up as soon as more information becomes available.

Gatekeeper vanishes Phalaborwa protests again

Joe Dreyer

The strange gatekeeper at Jetty 3 has mysteriously disappeared. This after two men who presented themselves as employees of the Department of Water Affairs and Sanitation (DWS) charged fishermen and boaters R100 per boat, R40 per vehicle and R20 per person to enter the Jetty 3 facilities earlier this month.

The men stopped well known local fisherman, Wayne Kirton two weeks ago and demanded he pay entry. This raised suspicion with Kirton and he requested their credentials upon which they presented him with an official-looking DWS receipt book. The men explained that the DWS had taken over the management of the Jetty facilities from the GTM and they had instituted an entry fee in order to maintain the upkeep of the facility.

The Greater Tzaneen Municipality said that they were not aware of any such arrangements and said they would be in contact with the DWS to clarify the matter. In the meantime the two men have mysteriously vanished. It is still not clear how they managed to convince the security guard who is permanently stationed at the gate, of their legitimacy.

We have still not had any feedback from the municipality on the matter. The public is free to enter the facility and launch their boats as per usual provided they have obtained the permit as per arrangement shortly after the Covid-19 lockdown. The permits are available from the municipality at no charge.

Another poacher down

Sipho Titus Khoza was handed a 52-year sentence by the Skukuza Regional Court on Friday, the 18th of November, of which he will serve only 34 years in prison as some of the sentences will run concurrently.

Khoza was arrested in the Kruger National Park (KNP) in September 2016 and again in December 2016 in the Stolznek Section. According to the report, in September 2016, Rangers followed a spoor which led them to two people who were found in possession of a heavy calibre hunting rifle, ammunition, and poaching equipment and were identified as Sipho Titus and Simon Khoza.

The two were charged and appeared in court for bail application and they were granted bail, and when the case was to go to trial, Simon Khoza absconded and was still at large.

During December 2016, rangers in Stolznek heard shots while on patrol and followed up, they then spotted three individuals whom they apprehended after giv-

ing chase. It was later established that the three had killed two rhinos for their horns. The suspects were identified again as Sipho Titus Khoza, Francisco Mlambo and Sam Lejane. During their bail application, Mlambo and Lejane were granted bail and absconded, leaving Khoza to face the music alone. However, the court was also informed that Sam Lejane’s fate would soon catch up to him as he was recently arrested in Barberton on an unrelated matter and will soon be on trial. The South African National Parks (SANParks) welcomed the heavy sentencing of Khoza by the Rhino court in Skukuza for rhino poaching and related offences.

The Acting Managing Executive of KNP, Dr Danny Govender, commended the Skukuza court, for imposing such a lengthy jail term. “This is a huge triumph for the work of our dedicated rangers, who work tirelessly to ensure criminals responsible for poaching our wildlife are brought to book. They are the first ring in the chain of justice being served.

The R40 provincial road came to an unexpected halt for all travelers using the road on Tuesday evening, the 22nd of November. This was after the Ba-Phalaborwa community members closed up all intersections leading to and from Phalaborwa following a dispute about the current sitting members of the Ba-Phalaborwa Community Forum (BCF).

The community members accused the top 16 seaters of maladministration and corruption, and they felt their objectives were falling on deaf ears, hence they decided to close the roads and request a meeting with the mayor.

This was after they had initially submitted a memorandum of demands to the municipality on the 8th of November stating that the BCF applied a strategy of nepotism for filling vacant opportunities. They also claimed that the BCF signed the term of office for five years without the knowledge of the community and that during the office term extensions they forged the mayor’s signature. One member of the community said that the BCF failed to show the tribal office and community members their constitution and that they insulted the traditional leaders in the chamber

meeting.

“It is for this reason that we are striking as the BCF no longer serves the interest of the community, but they have turned into labour brokers, namely Empowerborwa under PNP in Foskor,” said the protestor.

The community are fed up with the BCF’s strategies which include demanding donations during CV submissions from each applicant, after which they allegedly sell the jobs to another person who does not reside in Phalaborwa. The BCF are also accused of advertising outdated posts and throwing away CV’s of applicants.

Bulletin contacted several members of the BCF who said that all allegations against them were unfounded and not true. However, the community members told Bulletin that they have evidence of corruption, which they will only show to the mayor once she has a sit down with them.

Phalaborwa station commander, Colonel Billa, managed to negotiate the reopening of the R40 with the community, with the promise that they would transport representatives to meet up with the mayor and resolve the issue. The colonel refused to comment and directed us to the provincial spokesperson, who at the time of going to print could not be reached.

Looters clear up R71 truck accident scene

A truck transporting a full load of 2 litre soda drinks overturned on the R71 just before the Adshade Street bridge on Tuesday morning this week. The truck was underway to Tzaneen from the direction of Georges Valley when according to the driver, the vehicle’s brakes failed, and he lost control sending the truck into oncoming traffic.

As he entered the sharp bend just before the bridge, the driver opted to steer the vehicle up the steep embankment which sent it crashing through the boundary wall of one of the properties situated in Rooibos Street bordering the R71.

The large vehicle destroyed the infamous hawker stall situated on the bend and narrowly missed the occupants of said stall before its trailer tore open sending its entire cargo into the busy provincial road.

Within seconds of the accident, literally hundreds of people emerged from out of the bushes and from parked cars and bakkies to loot the overturned truck. People filled up entire bakkies with stolen cooldrinks. Traffic piled up all the way to the traffic light intersection at McDonalds with drivers pulling over next to the road to grab as many cooldrinks as they could carry and load it into their vehicles.

Ironically, the crowd steered clear of the Stoney beverages and focussed their attentions on the Coke and Sprite brands.

Police and Traffic officials stood helplessly and watched as the large crowd descended upon the accident scene and within minutes completely emptied out the truck’s trailer. Not a thought was given to the driver. When Bulletin arrived on the scene, the driver was

sitting next to the truck. He was visibly shaken as he briefly explained what had happened.

At the time of going to print it could not be established exactly what caused the accident or where the truck was headed, although it is believed to have been a Black Friday delivery.

Onlookers told Bulletin that trucks are heard screaming down the R71 daily and an accident was bound to happen. “The drivers don’t heed the speed limit here and many of these trucks take chances down Georges Valley and underestimate the sharpness of this bend,” said one onlooker who lives along the R71.

Nobody was injured in the accident and it is not certain whether any arrests were made although the quick response by Canine Security brought the situation under control within minutes. Marius Jacobs was seen pulling over bakkies loaded with stolen merchandise, attempting to leave the scene, and forcing the drivers to off load their haul.

We were unable to contact the company who owned the truck for comment.

Vossie Alumni lends her helping hand

The Adopt-a-School Foundation celebrated its 20th anniversary on Thursday the 17th of November. Coincidentally, it turned out also to be the 70th birthday of its chairperson and president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa. Miss South Africa 2022, Ndavi Nokeri, was in attendance and celebrated the Adopt-a-School foundation’s 20 years of improving schools along with President Ramaphosa. The journey with the foundation’s chairperson started off with a fax machine request. Looking back 20 years later, over 1,5 million lives have been changed and over 640 schools have since been adopted.

To celebrate this joyous and memorable occasion, the Adopt-a-School Foundation hosted a celebration event with all their sponsor partners, board members and special guests in attendance. The theme of the event required the guests to be dressed in the school uniform they sported dur-

ing their final year of school. Nokeri was proudly dressed in her Ben Vorster High attire and so confirmed being a proud Vossie.

The Adopt-a-School Foundation was born from a desire to be a positive force in changing the future of education in South Africa. From humble beginnings, the foundation has grown exponentially. With hundreds of schools spanning the entire country, the foundation was able to make a sustainable difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of learners, their families and their communities.

Through a holistic, inclusive model called Whole School Development, the aim is to address the academic, infrastructural, social and security environments in South Africa’s adopted schools, to ensure that they are conducive to teaching and learning. The schools being addressed were some of the least resourced and marginalised schools in the country.

The vision of this foundation is to create a dynamic, transformed and accessible schooling environment that produces capable global citizens to meet the developmental needs of Southern Africa.

Their mission is to support the delivery of an enhanced and conducive teaching and learning environment that can be replicated in disadvantaged schools.

The challenges facing many

schools in South Africa include inadequate infrastructure, lack of resources in various areas, lack of sanitation and security, lack of discipline and management and critical social welfare issues.

Out of a 100 grade 1 pupils, only 50 of them will reach grade 12. Of the 50 Grade 12 pupils only 36 will pass matric and 12 out of the 36 matriculants will enter university. Of the 12 university students, only six will graduate.

Mighty Hornbills leave Phoenix stranded

The BB Motors Hornbills Cricket Club team and arch rivals, Phoenix Cricket Club from Modjadjiskloof battled it out on Sunday the 20th of November in the next round of the Limpopo Impalas Sunday Premier League. This momentous battle played itself off at the Unicorn Preparatory School oval which is also the homebase of the Hornbills.

The Hornbills went on to celebrate a home win of 7 wickets after winning the toss and electing to send the visitors in to bat first. Phoenix managed to raise 103 runs, all out after 27,4 overs in their allotted 50-over spell.

The Hornbills bowlers piled on the pressure from the word go which saw the Phoenix opening batsmen back to the change room for a mere four runs on the score sheet. Ntiyiso Chauke, was the first to fall victim to the Hornbills attack as his wickets were dismantled from the first delivery by Franco Oberholzer.

Fellow opener Imran Babar’s time in front of the wickets was also a short lived affair as he too fell victim to Oberholzer’s bowling attack. Babar contributed four runs from the two balls he faced before his dismissal.

The Phoenix batsmen who managed to score double figures in their innings were Rainart Schoonbee (21 runs of 37 balls), Mikateko Rikhotso (33 runs of 25 balls), SJ Kaber (10 runs of 24 balls) and JJ Coetzee (20 runs of 41 balls).

Wian Fourie was the mainstay amongst the Hornbills bowlers. He took four wickets for 31 runs in his 8 overs spell. The bowl-

ers who claimed the other Phoenix scalps were Franco Oberholzer (3/14 in 6 overs), Richard Atherstone (2/43 in 7 overs) and Hendrik Botes (1/0 in 1.4 overs).

The Hornbills batsmen made the most of their home advantage as they frustrated the Phoenix bowlers on a small pitch that beckoned boundary attacks. The home side went on to score 106 runs and reached the set tar-

get in just 19 overs.

The batsmen who contributed to the Hornbills victory were Ryan Atkinson (14 runs of 19 balls), Abré Cilliers (22 runs of 16 balls), Hendrik Botes (19 runs of 40 balls) and Wilhelm Groenewald who was the top

scorer for the Hornbills on 37 runs off 40 balls.

The only wickets in the second innings came from the bowling of Phoenix’s Akani Mongwe with 2/35 in his 5 overs spell.

Photo dominates Plunge

Hundreds of athletes from as far as Gauteng travelled to Tzaneen for the popular yet daunting Magoebaskloof Plunge Marathon 2022. The main race being the marathon distance of 42,2km, started once again in the tranquil village of Haenertsburg.

Rufus Photo from the Murray & Roberts Athletics Club tamed the roller coaster run downwards to the Letaba Show Terrain in Tzaneen. This amid sweltering heat conditions, and a massive lead ahead of second placed Nedbank Athletics Club runner, Ludwick Mamabolo, who was one of his strongest rivals.

Mamabolo who is a former Comrades Ultra Marathon winner, eventually had to settle for the runners-up spot as he was unable to stay with the relentless pace of Photo.

Photo crossed the finish line in a stunning time of 02:28.08 with Mamabolo who followed just over a minute later in a time of 02:29.32. The runner from Waterfall City Athletics Club, Madre Nchabeleng, finished in third place in a time of 02:41.02, almost 13 minutes behind the front runners.

Pearl Hughes from Polokwane Athletics Club clinched the women’s division in the 42,2km race with a winning time of 03:34.21, nearly five minutes ahead of her closest rival, Nedbank Athletics Club athlete, Gift Ramabele, who crossed the line in a time of 03:38.46. Another athlete from Polokwane, Elsabé Cronjé from Pietersburg Road Runners, rounded off the podium with a third place in a time of 03:40.02.

The relentless pace at the front of the 17km race by Tebogo Pulusa of the Maxed DQ Domicilium RuleClub helped him secure a relatively easy win. Pulusa’s winning time was 00:53:03, some two minutes ahead of Boxer Club runner, Johannes Kekana, who completed the ‘Mini’ Plunge in a time of 00:55:11 to clinch second spot.

Tshvewe Moshia from the Nedbank Club however gave Kekana a run for his money and was hot on his heels in the final metres of this race. Moshia eventually had to settle for third place, albeit by a mere two seconds behind Kekana, in a time of 00:55:13.

Rosaline Isaiah was the first female athlete to complete the 17km race in a time of 01:08:45. In second place was the Murray & Roberts runner, Joyce Netshitenzhe, with a time of 01:16.20 with Mariska Bosch in third place in 01:18.12.

The Rotary Club of Haenertsburg was the organizer of this thrilling race and it is only the second time since 2019 that this spectacular event took place after the Covid-19 pandemic halted all events.
