The twin bridges over Tzaneen dam on the R71 claimed another life this past week. An unidentified woman jumped over the rails of one of the bridges on Saturday morning, the 18th of February.
In March 2021 a man in his early thirties jumped from the same bridge.
Unlike this latest victim who’s body was retrieved a few hours after she jumped, the man’s body disappeared beneath the cold and murky water. Rescuers only retrieved the man’s body two days later.
According to Deon van Tonder, a paramedic from Evac911 Ambulance Dispatching Service, they were dispatched after receiving a distress call from the farming community nearby. A farm employee witnessed the unfortunate incident and notified his employer who then called Evac911.
The paramedics were first on the scene, but unfortunately there was nothing they could do to save the woman’s life. Van Tonder said that upon arriving, he immediately contacted the SAPS in Tzaneen who dispatched a Search and Rescue member. The search and rescue team had to wait for about an hour for a boat to
arrive, which was organised by Van Tonder, before the victim could be retrieved from the water.
Just like the incident in 2021, it did not take long for curious onlookers to crowd the bridge to catch a glimpse of what was happening. There were traffic officers to control traffic, but nothing was done to prevent onlookers from stopping their vehicles on the bridge in contravention of the road safety regulations.
At the time of going to print the identity of the deceased woman had not been made public and the unfortunate circumstances that led to her deciding to end her life, is still unclear.
Twin bridges claims another life Generator malfunction leads to fire scare
A family residing in the Tzangeni private residential estate were shocked when a re started in their home and soon engulfed the entrance to their house.
The family, who prefer to stay anonymous, was quick to react and call for help. One of the neighbours called upon the services of Evac911 who then noti ed Tzaneen Neighbourhood Watch, which was very quick to react. Various other emergency, paramedics, sector policing and private security rms in Tzaneen responded to the scene.
According to Deon van Tonder from Evac911 Ambulance Dispatching Service, the residents all escaped from any serious injuries. A woman however sustained a minor knee scrape, and van Tonder said he was unsure how it happened.
“It is believed that a faulty generator, which was stationed in the courtyard of the property, was the likely cause of the re. A faulty fuel line on a generator can unexpectedly lead to such an incident and it is therefore important to regularly check this equipment. I had the same experience quite recently where I discovered a leak on the fuel pipe of my own generator. Luckily, I detected it early enough to take some preventative action.”

You are reading a historic piece of literature
■ Joe Dreyer
The newspaper that you are holding in your hands as you read this piece, is historic. It is the last printed version of your favourite weekly local newspaper.
As of next week, the 3rd of March 2023, your Bulletin will be delivered directly to your phone, desktop, laptop, tablet and every other smart device you use to stay updated about the real news that affects your every day life.
In 2020, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic Bulletin made the move to muscle up our online presence and it was during this time that we completely overhauled our website to provide a more actual, up to date and user-friendly experience to our readers.
We were the first media agency to make our publications available over WhatsApp messenger and Telegram groups, and we do not charge you a fee to read our articles online. We soon realized that our online following far exceeded our print-readers. In lockdown our videos reached an average of 2 million views and our generic following shot through the roof.
Whilst the nostalgia of a printed newspaper still lingers strong in certain spheres of society, especially among our more mature readers, we must stay with the times.
The world is changing, and if we are to continue serving our community, we must increase the reach of our voice. The only way to successfully highlight
the plight of our people, is to ensure that as many people outside of our immediate surroundings, hear our call.
Bulletin celebrates our 20-year anniversary with our community this year and what better way to enter this new growth phase, than with a significant change? This is our coming of age, and we are ecstatic at the opportunities that now lay waiting before us.
Your Bulletin will still be completely free each week, but will feature exciting new add-ons which will include online competitions with our media partners, weekly opinion pieces, interactive discussions directly with our community, live video coverage of breaking news events, interviews with prominent figures in our region and an exciting new daily podcast that will be launched in March.
To join any one of our digital distribution channels, please send us your name and surname to 064 650 7123 via WhatsApp. Go like our page at Far North Bulletin on Facebook and have the option to subscribe to our VIP Lounge where you will have access to exclusive content not available to our regular followers. Follow us on Instagram @bulletintzn for the image of the week and bookmark our website www.farnorthbulletin.co.za where you can read all our articles from the last few years as well as weekly news pieces.
Print may be in its final death throws, but your Bulletin is going nowhere. We are still here, still fearless and still carrying the flag for the truth. It is our time to flex.
What was the outcome of that meeting?
■ Joe Dreyer
The Greater Tzaneen Municipality has not updated its rate payers on whether their cries for an adjusted loadshedding schedule were heard. A meeting was held in the GTM’s boardroom in January this year to look at various options to address the concerns the rate payers have with the ever-fluctuating loadshedding schedule which is seriously affecting business throughout the entire municipality.
In attendance at this meeting were members of the Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce, with whom the GTM preferred to liaise concerning the matter, as an alternative to the media. Bulletin attended the meeting only because the communications director for the municipality was under the impression that we were still members of the chamber. A lot was discussed and said and speculated during this meeting, including various alternative schedules that would ease the burden on the residential and business communities. It was promised that a follow up meeting would be held which Bulletin would be permitted to live stream to our
Phone them:
residents, this never happened. It is also not clear whether a follow up meeting was indeed held, and if so, what the outcome was.
There has been no communication on this issue from either the municipality or the chamber of commerce. In the meantime the loadshedding schedules have caused massive losses for specifically small businesses and have led to mounting tension among the rate payers in the residential areas.
Some areas experience 12 hours of loadshedding daily. As many residents have continuously stated, it would be slightly less inconvenient if the municipality stuck to the schedules. But this is not the case. Power is often either not switched off, or switched off late, or in many instances not switched on at all.
A pattern has emerged where the switching is not being done on time in cases where the schedule includes early morning hours. Twice in the last week, power was meant to be restored at 01:30 in the morning, only to be turned back on at 05:30 or later.
The municipality has in the past defended this by stating that a shortage of technicians to do switching coupled with the distances that they need to travel was to blame. With the aged infrastructure
and lack of proper regular maintenance, the problem is exasperated by cables and transformers that sustain significant damage during the various switching procedures.
The situation will not soon be rectified according to Eskom and for all intents and purposes it does not appear as though the many WhatsApp groups are doing anything to alleviate the struggle. The only aspect of the dysfunctional relationship between the rate payers and their municipality that has remained consistent, is the faulty billing system.
Bulletin has attempted to arrange a video interview with the municipal manager, Donald Mhangwana, and the Director of Electrical Freedom Mthetwa, but we have received no word from the communications department on whether they would agree or not.
In the meantime, residents should contact the following people for clarity on the electrical issues: Donald Mhangwana, Municipal Manager (083 328 1558), Freedom Mthetwa, Director Electrical (072 537 9405), René Pohl Ward Councillor Ward 14 (079 707 1955), Chrizelle Dreyer, Ward Councillor Ward 15 (082 628 4181), Andre Moss, PR Councillor (066 238 1347) or the Mayor, Gerson Molapisane (082 310 7297).

■ Ben Theunissen
Toe ek ‘n kind was, was ek baie jonk.
Hier is ‘n paar:

Toegang is gratis.

Champs Boxing Academy will, for the very first time, present a very unique and exciting boxing event. The Box & Dine on the 4th of March will be an occasion that has never been experienced before by residents of Tzaneen.
Champs’ founder and Limpopo boxing stalwart, Gerhard ‘Soutie’ Rossouw, is the mastermind behind the event which includes a
three course formal dinner. The Box and Dine event will commence from 19:00 until late in the B Hall of the Tzaneen show terrain.
This exciting evening has five top fights on the program to entertain the guests, whilst the diners will have ample time to socialize. A very rare auction will also be part of the program. Book your tickets now as there are only seven tables still available, and once the word
has spread, ticket sales are expected to sell like hot cakes.
The ladies are encouraged to dress to impress, for the men it is up to them whether they want to dress either smart or casual, although smart would be preferred.
A cash bar will also be made available. To book your table, contact Gerhard Rossouw as at 062 873 7252 this week to prevent disappointment.

Hierdie kompetisie is by ‘n private dam in die Letsitele-omgewing beslis.
