he colours you choose for your wedding day can come from anywhere — it’s all about discovering the best reflection of your style. Greens and neutrals have paved the way for a total return to colour in 2018. Expect to see pops of bold shades and bright color pairings. When it comes to wedding colors, there’s purple, and then there’s purple—or should we say Ultra Violet, Pantone’s

Color of the Year for 2018. As a vibrant departure from Greenery (2017’s fresh and organic Color of the Year), Ultra Violet is a deep, blue-based purple— darker than lavender, cooler than plum, but brighter than eggplant—with cosmic undertones to evoke “originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.” We expect to see this shade of purple in everything from floral arrangements to coloured

linens. So how exactly do you incorporate this striking, regal shade of violet into your wedding day? You could think big, bold and monochromatic—or, if you can’t quite commit, sprinkle hints of Ultra Violet throughout your day to add depth and energy to anything from cake embellishments to flower girl dresses. https://www.theknot.com/content/pantone-colorof-the-year-2018-wedding-ideas

Champagne, bubbly, sparkling wine – it’s all quite similar, right? Wrong. There is a huge difference in what characterises champagne from sparkling wine and it has everything to do with method, and a whole lot more to do with price. South Africans tend to have a single buzzword for everything wine and bubbles – champagne. Although most are aware there is a difference, describing what actually sets champagne apart from sparkling wine is often a tricky concept and not easily answered. So what exactly is sparkling wine? The process of creating a sparkling wine is not dissimilar to normal or still wine production except that the wine is carbonated by injecting carbon dioxide, much like the process of making fizzy soft drinks. This is much more cost-effective and less time consuming. Examples

of this bubbly would be the ever-popular and various selections of carbonated JC le Roux (the le domaine, la fleurette and sauvignon blanc). So then, what is champagne? The first thing to note is that the bubbles in champagne are made through an entirely different production process to sparkling wine. The second is that champagne can only be called champagne if it comes from the Champagne region of France. Fortunately for the party animals and the avid winos out there, our Cape method of bubbly making is exactly the same as that used in France; we just can’t call it champagne. Method Cap Classique (or MCC) as our finer bottles of bubbly are fittingly labelled, involves two fermentation processes. The first fermentation is the same method used to create still wine, but the difference lies in the second fermentation.

The wine is poured into a bottle where yeast and sugar is added before it is capped and placed horizontally in the cellar for 1-2 years where the bottle is turned regularly and trapped yeast rises to the bottle neck. This yeast is removed, sugar is added and the bottle is corked – ready to be sold. MCC is a commonly used sparkling wine production process and includes brands such as Pongrácz. Depending on the brand; prices can range from a few hundred to well over R1000 and although you can’t fault a good bottle of MCC, knowing the difference could save you a pretty penny. If price doesn’t bother you but you’re unsure what to call your glass of sparkling wine, then bubbly is always safest. It may help avoid some embarrassing “um moments” if someone feels the need to tell you that you’re not actually drinking champagne.

What’s trending at weddings E

veryone wants their wedding day to be memorable for all the right reasons…. They want their day to be special and unique from all the rest. Bulletin have gone and searched the web to find some wedding trends that will definitely set your wedding apart from the rest, making it an unforgettable affair… These are our top 7 picks.

Bridal capes

While veils are a beautiful nod to tradition, a cape is equally well suited to modern and vintage-inspired bridal looks. It instantly updates the look with full length capes for added drama, short and beaded for retro glamour or sleek and simple or lacey for an updated vintage look.

One dress, two or three looks

The new trend in weddings worldwide is to have a different look for church and for the reception. But instead of having two outfits, why not have one that easily converts to the next look? Detachable sleeves, detachable skirts and removable trains are all easy ways to go from church to reception party ready in just minutes… and it saves on costs as well.

Single-colour bridal bouquets

Where the bouquets are the way a bride adds colour against the white backdrop of her dress, the newest trend is to move away from multi-coloured bouquets and move to a single-colour bouquet instead. Your florist can create texture by combining different flowers in a similar shade to create a masterpiece of simplicity that will not overpower the beauty of your dress (and you) on your wedding day.

2018 sees backdrops, table plans, signage and chairs are all going for a clear, see-through look. Nothing combines the modern with the romantic quite like Perspex or other acrylic alternatives.

Clear top tents

These translucent structures are one of the hottest wedding reception trends, as they are a chic alternative to the traditional white canopy tents. Clear top tents is a gorgeous way of inviting the outside in without worrying about rain, especially when your reception takes place somewhere scenic such as a waterfront or forest venue. Dance away under the stars (literally) and enjoy the feeling of being outside whilst being protected from the elements.

Bars on Wheels

A van that serves everything from bubbly to signature drinks to craft beer? Bars on wheels will be a big hit with any reception theme. This adds an interesting and convenient twist to the usual bars, with less hassle to stock and clean up. This way you can ensure that the bar gets exactly the right spot in your wedding venue.

A twist on tradition

Perspex everything!

Starting the Perspex trend in 2017 with place cards and menus,

Instead of throwing the wedding bouquet, have it locked in a Perspex box. Each participant receives a key, and the key that unlocks the box is the winner of the bouquet.

Know your lace While always timeless and romantic, different lace textures create different bridal looks depending on construction and layering. Know-

ing the style you like and are most comfortable in will help you in the long run with your dress hunt. Here are some varieties to keep in mind:

Brocade Lace:

Often made in colored silks accented with gold and silver threads; a combination of richly decorated shuttle-woven fabrics.

Chantilly Lace:

French lace made by twisting and braiding lengths of thread around bobbins; rich in detailing and patterns; made with linen or silk.

HOW TO CLEAN A LACE WEDDING DRESS Alençon Lace:

Knit Lace:

Needlepoint lace that originated from France; typically a floral design on a sheer or net background; soft, cotton-like texture.

A soft lace without tulle backing, making a more flexible fabric that contours around the body with ease.

Guipure Lace:

Also known as Venetian lace, this is a firm, stiff lace without a net background. Patterns are created by a series of close, embroidered stitches onto fine fabric.

Eyelet Lace:

Light and airy fabric; typically made with cotton, silk or satin. This flirty and modern style adds a touch of boho to your gown.

Embroidered Lace:

Delicate patterns tightly stitched onto an illusion base, forming the appearance of an applique. Often, pieces of embroidered lace are on top of a separate tulle layer.

Add that personal touch to your wedding day

After your big day, it’s important to follow a simple but effective regimen to keep your lace wedding dress in top condition. First, identify the stains on your dress, such as food, sweat, and dirt marks, especially at the hem. If the hem is dirty, fill your bathtub with warm, soapy water, hang your dress above, and let the hem soak for a couple of hours. After soaking, use a toothbrush and liquid detergent to gently scrub the hemline back to its natural color. For sweat stains on the bodice of the dress, spray the lining with soap and water solution and use a toothbrush and liquid detergent to clean out the stains. Do the same with other stains around the dress. If the soapy water solution does not get a stain out, soak the area in an OxiClean solution until the stain disappears. If your dress requires allover cleaning once you’ve spot-removed the stains, take it to a professional dry cleaner. When complete, store the gown in an acid-free box.

How to book a dress fitting Amore Bridal Studio offers a wide range of wedding dresses for brides of any shape and size and we can customize the dress to your liking. If you are planning to visit a bridal boutique, here are some pointers to ensure that you remain on point: 1. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT Make an appointment two week in advance with the bridal boutique that you would like to visit. Some bridal boutiques may take walk-ins, but most bridal boutiques will request that you make an appointment before coming in. 2. ALLOT ENOUGH TIME Allocate approximately 1-2 hours to try on dresses. You don’t want to rush and be stressed about other to-do’s. When you are trying to find THE DRESS, you need to allocate some time for it. 3. BUDGET BASICS Be prepared to discuss your price budget - this will allow the bridal boutique represenative to bring you dresses that are in your price range. 4. DRESSING ROOM ETIQUETTE Bridal Boutique dressing rooms are generally large enough to accommodate 1-2 guests so call your bridesmaids and mom to share these special moments with you. The Bridal Boutique Representative might assist in your fitting to make sure all the buttons, ribbons and more is tied correctly. 5. NO to Cameras but YES to taking lots of notes Do not bring a camera to take pictures of yourself in different dresses. Even if your intentions are honest, bridal boutiques need to guard against customers who are trying on dresses with the intention of having the dress copied by a dress maker. Be sure to note the dresses that you are interested. Although most sales people would love to sell you a dress that day, most also know that most brides want to “sleep on it” before making a decision. Make sure all the dresses you’re interested are noted for reference. If you would like to book a dress fitting at Amore Bridal Boutique please contact Nyeleti Events or visit our website for more.

Oh the sweetest thing C

Succulent Cakes You’ve seen wedding cakes decorated with actual succulents, but the 2018 version of this trend is entirely edible. Cakes will be topped with piped icing succulents to create a terrarium-inspired look.

hoosing your wedding cake can be overwhelming for many couples. The options are endless and choosing the right style and flavor can be a daunting task. There is a big difference between buttercream and fondant, sugar flowers and real flowers, painted gold and gold leaf. Here are a few interesting tips that can help you make your way through the overwhelming (and often hopelessly overpriced) battlefield of cake cover options. Fondant or Buttercream? The difference between fondant and buttercream can be likened as the distance light travels from the sun to the waist deep waters of the Bahamas. And then an inch or so more. Fondant is a thin, clay-like icing most often made from confectioner’s sugar, corn syrup and water. It dries on contact with air and creates a smooth, solid and clean finish. Fondant can also be coloured to match your wedding colours. If your reception is in a very wet area with lots of rain and humidity, fondant will not be a good choice unless you keep your cake indoors. We have seen buttercream cakes making a comeback in the

Black Cakes With moodier wedding styles trending as of late, it’s no surprise that black wedding cakes will be all over 2018 dessert tables! Black pairs gorgeously with metallic accents, so add a gold drizzle or brush of paint to your cake.

Hand-Painted Cakes This romantic trend fits right in with spring wedding decor and garden wedding style. Hand-painted floral details are one of the prettiest 2018 wedding cake trends, and this look is a new take on the watercolor wedding decor trend that has been popular for the last few years.

last few years. From naked (no, not the chef in the kitchen you envisioned when she first used the ‘n’-word) cakes to plain buttercream cakes. A lot of couples prefer the taste of soft buttercream and not the hard candy-like taste of fondant. Buttercream is soft and must be spread by hand, which means that it will never lay as flat on the surface of a cake as fondant would, it can be loaded easily into a piping bag to create flowers, designs and piped edges. If you are dreaming of an architectural cake with intricate designs, buttercream is not the icing for you. It also melts in high heat and humidity so it is less likely to hold its shape in warm climates (which basically cancels any wedding at any time of the year in Tzaneen). Naked cakes (stop it with the puns) are still a big hit at weddings this season. This cake has no coverage of fondant or buttercream on the outside but is rather left “naked” (see, told you). Buttercream filling can be seen in between the cake layers and it is usually topped off with fresh fruit or flowers. Even though this looks like an easy option and better tasting than fondant, the dangers of a dried out cake is real. Your cake will be standing for a few hours out in the open. If you go for this option, ask your baker to assemble the cake

on site. A Naked cake might look good, but can become a disaster if the cake and buttercream is very bland and dried out. Ultimately, the choice comes down to the texture and flavors you want from your cake, as well as the intricacy of the design you have in mind. Set up an appointment with your baker and discuss all the options available. Take pictures with and also ask to see some of your bakers work. In the end, you need to look at all your options and under-

stand that some ideas are just not practical. In laymen’s terms (and we are addressing the husband to-be) there really is more to choosing the cake than you may want to admit. So when ‘Liefie’ wants to go see the baker and wants you to go with because it’s “going to be quick honey” – fake a calve injury, get the lawn mower out or develop a sudden urge to go shoe shopping. Because it won’t be. The bonus of staying home includes a plate-full of yummy cake bites ‘Liefie’ will return with for you to try out tonight just before bedtime – on the couch where you will be sleeping the rest of the week.

Matching jewellery A

ccessories can make or break your look. When choosing fashion accessories to match your outfit, consider the color, scale and style of the pieces, and keep the occasion in mind.

Color When you’re wearing black, white or other neutrals, accessories in any color look stylish and coordinated. If you’re wearing a colorful outfit, though, make sure your fashion accessories don’t clash.

are analogous to each other. They work very well together when they are matched on the same level of lightness or darkness. If you want to make a big fashion statement, choose primary and secondary colors that are opposite of each other on the wheel. Pairing these colors is bold and adventurous, and some shades don’t look as good together as others. Avoid partnering red with green, though, unless it’s the holiday season. Experiment to find which colors work best for you. In general, don’t use more than three colors in your whole ensemble.

understated accessories to keep the emphasis on your outfit. The scale and shape of your handbag is also important. Consider your body type in addition to what you are wearing. Tall, thin women look best with short, slouchy bags such as hobos and clutches. Petite women should avoid oversized satchels; these bags overwhelm their small frames. Short ladies should also steer clear of handbags with long straps. Plussize and hourglass-shaped women look fabulous with medium-sized structured or boxy handbags to balance out their curves.

Scale

Style

The scale of your fashion accessories is important, too. When you’re wearing patterns, simple accessories are the best option. Accessories and jewellery that are too busy will make prints look tacky. The same goes for ruffled, sequined, embroidered or otherwise embellished garments: Wear

Fashion accessories can define your style. A white shirt and jeans or simple black dress can look completely different depending on your choice of handbag, shoes, jewellery and other accessories. Here are some common accessories to consider, depending on your personal style: • Classic accessories -- pearl- or diamond-stud earrings, silk scarf, leather clutch and classic black pumps • Glamorous accessories -chandelier earrings, bib necklace, large cocktail ring, crystal-embellished clutch, oversized sunglasses and sky-high heels • Playful accessories -- chunky

It all goes back to the basics of the color wheel. Primary colors, of course, are red, blue and yellow. Secondary colors are those that result from mixing two primary colors (i.e., red plus yellow equals orange). Primary and secondary colors that are side by side on the wheel

jewellery, hobo bag, headbands, skinny belt and colorful ballet flats • Edgy accessories -- thick cuff bracelet, choker necklace, studded handbag and black leather booties • Workday accessories -- delicate necklace, classic watch, large satchel or shoulder bag and kitten heels • Casual accessories -- candycolored bracelet or watch, Wayfarer sunglasses, crossbody bag, floppy hats and knee-high boots or espadrille sandals Accessories can take any outfit from drab to fab. They can also help extend your wardrobe because you can achieve multiple looks from one basic dress just by changing your accessories. To look your best, put as much effort into selecting your fashion accessories as you do the main components of your ensemble. Choosing your jewellery is no different than choosing your wardrobe. Most important is to stick within your comfort zone and your personal fashion style. That said, it never hurts to step out of the box once in awhile. What’s most important is that your jewelry matches up with your outfit. Your jewellery is the finishing touch on your total look. Make your fashion statement count!

From kidnapping to romance in just a century or so O

f all the great mysteries surrounding much of our folklore as a western culture, none could quite be as vexing as the many intrigues that surround the wedding gown. The proverbial Holy Grail of the teenage daughter, day-dreaming as she pages through mom’s old wedding album. The dress is really the centre piece of the occasion, after all it is described as the gift wrapping in which the bride is presented to her groom. But why the hype? And what’s up with all the very specific guidelines and superstitions when

it comes to the both the ceremony and the dress? We investigated the three most common wedding associated traditions and discovered some interesting facts related to their origins. Myth One – A wedding dress should be white Actually, the most popular colour for a wedding dress nowadays is in fact, Ivory, and not as it is most commonly believed, white. And no, the colour is not directly related to whether or not you’re a virgin as you walk down the aisle either. Nor is it determined by the number

of times you have been married before. The colour white was adopted after 1840 to imitate the style of dress worn by Queen Victoria when she wed Albert. Although that tradition was embraced by generations to follow, the reality is that prior to this, wedding gowns were either silver or red. Myth Two - Seeing one another before the Wedding This is actually quite a comical tradition really as it dates back to a time where the arranged marriages were really trending. People believed that if the couple saw each other before the ceremony, it would give them a chance to change their minds about the wedding. Today, however, many couples choose to meet up and even have professional prewedding shoots as little as a week before saying their I do’s. Myth Three – Carrying the bride over the threshold Traditionally weddings of old could be likened more to a kidnapping than an actual wilful and loving act. Many of today’s modern wedding traditions were

adopted from this, including the best man (who acted as a shield between the groom and the upset family members of the bride), and the custom of the bridal couple leaving the ceremony before the other guests. It’s symbolic of the groom stealing away his bride from her family and into a new life with him. Many believed that carrying the bride over the threshold was related to the belief in demons that could easily possess the bride through her feet. In Medieval Europe, carrying a bride into her new home prevented her from seeming too enthusiastic about losing her virginity. By picking her up and taking her into their home, the groom provided an alibi for his wife’s chastity. The Europeans believed that if the bride tripped while crossing the threshold into her new home she would bring bad luck over their marriage and therefore the fact that her groom carried her into the home eliminated that from happening. So there you have it. Some things are stranger than fiction purely because some things are true.

T

hey say that when you move into a new town, the first three things you search for is a church, a school and a hairdresser. Well in the case of the latter you can spend more time on that church choir audition because Ronel Kardos has your hair sorted. Don’t take our word for it. No, seriously, just look at the pictures accompanying this article and decide for yourself. They look amazing right? These girls are not models, and neither was this some elaborate ad campaign, but normal women with professionally styled hair and flawless makeup courtesy of the team at Mirandi’s Aesthetic Beauty in Boundary Street. While the girls were doing their thing in front of the lens, we had a bit of a chat with Ronel who offered us some helpful hints on choosing the right style to accompany your dress on your special day, what styles are ‘in’ this season and why a trial run is important. “Balayage is a new trend this year which is sure to pick up some momentum as we enter the wedding season. This is a technique for highlighting hair in which the dye is painted on in such a way as to create a graduated, natural-looking effect,” she explained. “This year (2018) is set to be a year of romantic, effortless luxe (graceful) hair. A touch of elegance and sophistication paired with what makes you - you.” According to Ronel, we will see the return of braids and twists, but styled in ways never implemented before. Tousled, textured and perfectly imperfect messy hair is the perfect way to showcase balayage and ombré colouring techniques, so be sure to give this a try when you go for your trial before the big day. “There are some common mistakes that most brides make, which could cause a major catastrophe on your big day. Here’s some advice to prevent this from happening: don’t ever change your hair colour a few days before the wedding – that’s what a trial is for. And those trials are meant to be done at least three months before the wedding for exactly this reason. You could have an idea in your head but when you actually see it in practice, you might want to change your mind. Three months

Bфore is enough time for that without upsetting the other arrangements.” In her own words Ronel says that hair and dress should be a loving relationship. “Your hair should complement your dress, not compete against it. Remember that on the morning of the big day, your stylist should need two hours just for the bride’s hair and an hour for each of your bride’s maids, so plan accordingly and stay in touch with your stylist if your plans change so that she can make the necessary adjustments to her own planning.” In conclusion, Ronel compiled a list of Do’s and Don’ts which should help you through the process as effortlessly as humanly (yes stylists are humans too) possible.

Do’s

O

kay, so you have the perfect hair do to match the dress (the verdict of which one took you the longest portion of forever to decide upon, is still out). Now we need to do something about those naturally beautiful yet still open for a bit of artificial touch-ups, face, smiling bones and nails. Who better to speak to about the three prime integers than someone who has been in the ‘colour me pretty’ business for long enough to be at the top of the list of referrals throughout the region? That’s right, we spent some time with Mirandi Condurache of Mirandi’s Aesthetic Beauty Salon to find out how not look like a three-year old who found her way into momma’s makeup drawer on the day of your weeding. What are your top three tips to brides, when it comes to makeup in the few days leading up to the actual wedding day? Is a makeup trial really necessary? And what is this business of airbrushing all about? She gave us the usual smile which denoted a sense of “really? You really don’t know why makeup is important?” with a strong undertone of professionalism which yelled back loudly “yes! Another opportunity to teach someone the world of professional makeup artistry!” In all honesty, whilst explaining the various concepts behind the perfect makeup for the perfect day, her excitement was palpable, so much so, that this writer considered changing professions for a second. “It really depends on what you

want, are you comfortable having makeup done by someone who’s never done it before? The trial is just a practice-run to make sure you like your make up, and to play around with it a bit before the big day,” she explained. “Why airbrush? Airbrush makeup is characterized by its unique HD application. The makeup is dispersed as an extremely fine mist through the airbrush gun. This makes airbrush makeup to be a thin, light layer on the skin that is barely noticeable and flawless to the wearer yet with a full coverage. Silicone-based airbrush fluid is largely waterproof depending on how much, and how you set the makeup, perfect for bridal makeup Why get makeup done professionally? Your wedding day is guaranteed to be busy, and will likely include a few unexpected challenges, so don’t let your appearance be one of them. You shouldn’t have to spend time worrying if your eyeliner is straight while ensuring that your vendors deliver on time. On the day-of, your beauty team rolls in, on location, and knows your skin type, your desired outcome, your theme, and any complications in the trial. Do’s and Don’ts for my face prep before the big day:

Dont’s

• Don’t pic or scratch at any spots and pimples, rather ask the makeup artist to cover and conceal impurities for you. • Don’t do your eyebrow waxing with an aesthetician that you have not used before. • Don’t use any self-tan or spray tan on your face.
