Mankabidi with water gets R1m Crisis is upon Tzaneen golden handshake About a year ago (!) water started leaking from an underground pipeline feeding Tzaneen, about 500 meters past the cycad nursery on the south western entrance to Tzaneen (almost across the road from the prison). We again reported it to the GTM about two months ago and we were told that an inspection was held. However, nothing has been done to fix the problem.
The red lights are on for Tzaneen’s water consumers. The lack of maintenance of the infrastructure over the past twenty years is starting to take its toll, and this week’s cut in the water supply to parts of Tzaneen for up to 24 hours could be the beginning of a time of agony for residents. The problem worsened dramatically when Tzaneen experienced strong growth in the years from about 2000 till 2012. The frantic developments in the residential market during those years added additional strain on the infrastructure. What now happens, amongst
other things, is that the old pipes can’t handle the water pressure, resulting in the reservoirs being filled only about 50%. When a pipe burst is experienced the reservoirs run dry very quickly, and it takes quite some time to get them back to a reasonable level. The Bulletin has been writing about the unavoidable problems with water supply over the past couple of years, warning Tzaneen residents that a crisis was waiting in the wings. We warn residents today that a serious problem with the sewerage system is looming, and it is just a matter of time....
