al vez estábais sentados en el avión, iniciando ya el descenso hacia el aeropuerto de Ibiza, cuando avistásteis fugazmente esta pequeña extensión de tierra emergiendo del Mediterráneo. Puede ser, incluso, que os pasara por la mente que lo que estábais viendo era la loma gigante de una ballena que traspasaba por un instante la frontera entre el mundo terrenal y el acuático para luego volver a sumergirse elegantemente en las profundidades marinas.

Tras el aterrizaje en Ibiza, os trasladáis en taxi o autobús al puerto, donde uno de los rápidos ferrys catamarán os llevará a Formentera, suponiendo, claro está, que no haya borrasca y mar revuelto.

Recuerdo mi primera travesía a Formentera como si fuese ayer: la hice en el viejo buque, “Joven Dolores”, el barco que entonces iba y venía entre las islas a paso lento y regular. Mi viaje empezó a mediados de los años 90 del siglo pasado. Tumbada en la parte delantera de la proa, donde había sitio para embarcar dos coches, estaba soñando con los ojos abiertos, la vista perdida en el azul límpido del cielo, cuando una voz en mi mente me susurraba que estaba de camino a casa. Que extraño, pensé, hace poco no sabía siquiera que Formentera existiera. Sin embargo, todo era posible.

Al fin y al cabo mi amor por la isla había surgido de forma tan inesperada como repentina. En la pared de casa de un amigo vi la foto de una casa sencilla y blanca, con ventanas y contraventanas de made108

orse eravate seduti in aereo iniziando già la discesa verso l’aeroporto di Ibiza, quando avete fugacemente avvistato questa piccola lingua di terra emergere dal Mediterraneo.

Magari vi è pure passato per la mente che quello che stavate vedendo era il gigantesco dorso di una balena che attraversava per un istante la frontiera tra il mondo terreste e l’acquatico, per poi reimmergersi elegantemente nelle profondità marine.

Dopo l’atterraggio a Ibiza, vi trasferivate in taxi o autobus al porto, dove uno dei rapidi catamarani vi avrebbe traghettato a Formentera, supponendo naturalmente che non vi fosse burrasca o mare mosso.

Ricordo la mia prima traversata per Formentera come se fosse ieri: la feci nella “Joven Dolores”, una vecchia imbarcazione che allora andava e tornava tra le isole a passo lento e costante. Il mio viaggio iniziò a principio degli anni 90 del secolo scorso. Sdraiata a prua, dove c’era spazio sufficiente per imbarcare due auto, stavo sognando ad

ielleicht saßen Sie gerade im Flugzeug und näherten sich dieser kleinen flüchtigen Landmasse im südlichen Mittelmeer, während Sie sich bereits im Landeanflug auf Ibiza befanden. Möglicherweise kam Ihnen sogar der Gedanke, einen riesigen schwimmenden Walfischbuckel zu erblicken, der für einen kurzen Augenblick die Grenze zwischen der irdischen und der ozeanischen Welt überschreitet, um gleich darauf wieder elegant in die Fluten abzutauchen.

Sind Sie dann vom Flughafen mit dem Taxi oder Bus im Hafen von Ibiza gelandet, hat Sie vielleicht alsbald eine der flotten Katamaran Fähren nach Formentera hinüber geleitet, sofern keine stürmischen Winde die Wassermassen in Wallung brachten.

Ich erinnere mich noch genau an meine erste Überfahrt nach Formentera mit der „Joven Dolores“, einem alten Kutter, der damals noch gemächlich zwischen den Inseln hin und her tuckerte. Die Reise begann Mitte der neunziger Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts. Ich lag im vorderen Teil des Schiffbugs auf der Rampe, die sonst zwei Wagen Platz bietet und träumte mit Blick in den babyblauen Sommerhimmel vor mich hin, während ein Gedanke mir zuflüsterte, ich wäre jetzt auf dem Weg, nach Hause zu fahren. Seltsam, bis vor kurzem hatte ich nicht einmal gewusst, dass Formentera überhaupt existiert! Aber warum nicht, dachte ich!

After landing in Ibiza, you went in taxi or by bus to the Port, where one of the fast catamaran ferries would take you to Formentera, supposing, obviously, that there were no storms or rough seas.

I remember my first crossing to Formentera as though it were yesterday: I made the crossing in the old liner “Joven Dolores”, the boat that came and went between the islands at a slow and regular pace. My journey started in the mid 1990’s. Lying in the front part of the prow, where there was space to board for two cars, I was dreaming with me eyes open, my vision lost in the limpid blueness of the sky, when a voice in my head whispered to me that I was coming home. How strange, I thought, that until recently I had not even known that Formentera existed. Nevertheless, everything was possible.

After all, my love for the island had arisen in an unexpected and equally sudden way. On the wall of a friend’s house I saw a photo of a simple, soli109

ra pintadas de azul, solitaria, enclavada en un paisaje árido. Más tarde me enteré de que estaba construida en el estilo tradicional de las casas payesas de la isla (llamadas fincas). A su alrededor florecían algunas plantas, especies duras y tenaces como la buganvilla y la adelfa, que desafían el mal tiempo y las sequías. Sin embargo, el encanto de la foto residía en la luz que creaba un ambiente lleno de calor. Los muros de piedra alrededor de la casa parecían arder como brasas candentes y rojas en la chimenea. El cielo estaba engalanado con alguna que otra nube cuya blancura se teñía lentamente con los rayos del sol poniente. La foto emanaba una belleza sencilla y adusta, envuelta en una atmósfera tranquila, sosegada, de la que me enamoré al instante. Y desde hace casi veinte años, cada mañana revivo este momento cuando miro desde mi ventana. ¿En qué consiste exactamente la atracción de esta isla que tantas veces ha sido descrita? Para saberlo realmente, habrá que beber esta poción mágica y así averiguar, por uno mismo, en qué reside la seducción que ejerce la isla.

Igual que a mí, a lo largo de los siglos las olas trajeron a muchos y variados personajes a estas orillas.

Algunos de estos náufragos hicieron de Formentera su hogar y sus descendientes siguen viviendo, trabajando y muriendo aquí. Algunos se perdieron en la lejanía para nunca más volver, otros retornan dichosos una y otra vez para renovar los lazos de afecto y unidad. Como plantitas jóvenes en la tierra madre, han crecido amistades, se han mezclado genes y se han tejido vínculos para toda la vida.

Actualmente, hay una alegre mezcla de más de setenta nacionalidades que ensayan día a día la con-

occhi aperti e lo sguardo perso nell’azzurro limpido del cielo, quando una voce nella mia testa mi sussurrò che stavo tornando a casa. Che strano pensai, fino a poco tempo fa non sapevo neppure che Formentera esistesse. Ciononostante, tutto era possibile.

In fin dei conti il mio amore per l’isola era sorto in modo così inatteso e repentino. Appesa alla parete in casa di un amico, avevo scorto la foto di una casa bianca e semplice, con le finestre e le controfinestre di legno dipinte di blu, isolata, incastonata in un paesaggio arido. Tempo dopo mi resi conto che era una casa costruita nello stile tradizionale delle dimore payesas dell’isola.

Tutt’intorno fiorivano delle piante, di specie robuste e tenaci come la buganvillea e l’oleandro, che sfidano il maltempo e la siccità. Ma il vero incanto della foto risedeva nella luce creata da un ambiente colmo di calore. I muri di pietra intorno alla casa sembravano ardere, come le braci rossicce e incandescenti in un camino. Il cielo era adornato da nuvole sparse, il cui biancore si tingeva lentamente per i raggi del sole ponente. La foto emanava una bellezza semplice e austera, avvolta in un’atmosfera tranquilla, contegnosa, di cui m’innamorai immediatamente. E da quasi vent’anni ogni mattina rivivo quel momento, quando guardo l’isola dalla mia finestra.

Various plants bloomed around it, including hardy and tenacious plants such as bougainvillea and oleander that survived bad weather and drought. However, the charm of the photo was due to the light that created a heatfilled atmosphere. The stone walls around the house seemed to burn like glowing red embers in a chimney. The sky was adorned with a few clouds whose whiteness was being slowly dyed by the rays of the setting sun. The photo emanated a simple and austere simplicity, enveloped in a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere that I fell in love with instantly. And for almost twenty years now, I relive this moment whenever I look out from my window.

mittelt. An der Zimmerwand im Haus eines Freundes erblickte ich ein Foto. Darauf sah man ein einfaches weißes Haus mit blau lackierten Holzfenstern und Läden, verlassen inmitten einer kargen Umgebung stehen. Wie ich später erfuhr, war das Haus, („Finca“ genannt), der traditionellen bäuerlichen Architektur der Insel nachempfunden.

Um die Finca herum blühten ein paar hartgesottene Pflanzenarten, wie Bougainvillea und Oleander, die Wind und Wetter trotzig die Stirn bieten können.

Doch der Charme des Fotos entfaltete sich durch seine wärmende Lichtstimmung. Die Steinmauern um das Haus herum schienen zu glühen wie heiße, feuerrote Glut im Kaminofen. Der Himmel war mit vereinzelten Wolken geschmückt, deren weiß sich langsam in der hereinbrechenden Abendsonne verfärbte. Das Foto verströmte eine schlichte, herbe Schönheit gebettet in eine ruhige, gelassene Atmosphäre, in die ich mich augenblicklich verliebte. Dieser Augenblick kehrt nun seit fast zwanzig Jahren jeden Morgen beim Blick aus dem Fenster hinaus zu mir zurück.

Come me, nel corso dei secoli le onde portarono su queste sponde moltitudini di variegati personaggi. Alcuni di questi naufraghi elessero Formentera loro patria, e i loro discendenti continuano a vivere, lavorare e morire qui. Alcuni si persero nella distanza e non tornarono mai più, altri invece vi fecero felicemente ritorno, una volta e un’altra ancora, per ravvivare i vincoli di affetto e comunione.
