¿Cuándo estuviste tú, querido lector, en Formentera por última vez? ¿Tal vez esta mañana? ¿Tal vez hace días, semanas o incluso años?

Quando sei stato tu, caro lettore, per l’ultima volta a Formentera? Forse questa mattina? Forse giorni, settimane o addirittura anni fa?

Cuando se vive permanentemente en una isla, quizás habiendo nacido en ella o estando unido a ella por raíces familiares centenarias, podría ocurrir que se pierda la perspectiva, que, de estar tan unido a lo cercano y conocido, los árboles no dejen ver el bosque.

Quando vivi permanentemente su un’isola, ci sei nato o forse sei legato ad essa da radici familiari centenarie, capita che tu ne perda la prospettiva, come quando sei tanto unito a ció che è piu vicino e conosciuto, cosi come trovarsi tra gli alberi non permette di vedere la foresta.

Nada tiene que ver con esta mirada hacia el interior la apreciación desde fuera, la del visitante, la del que no se sumerge en la convivencia diaria de la gente que vive y trabaja en la isla y que depende el uno del otro, la gente que se ha forjado una existencia que les da el privilegio de vivir aquí. Sí, el privilegio ¡no has leído mal!

Non ha nulla a che fare con questo sguardo verso l’interno, l’apprezzamento del visitatore esterno, colui che non è immerso nella vita quotidiana delle persone che vivono e lavorano sull’isola e che sono strettamente legate l’una all’altra, la gente che ha forgiato la propria esistenza ricevendo il privilegio di vivere qui. Sì, il privilegio Non hai letto male!

Vom Weggehen und Wiederkommen

On leaving and returning

Wann sind Sie, lieber Leser, das letzte Mal auf Formentera gewesen? Heute Morgen vielleicht? Vor einigen Tagen, Wochen, oder Jahren?

When was the last time that you, dear reader, were in Formentera? Perhaps this morning? Perhaps it was days, weeks or even years ago?

Wenn man dauerhaft auf einer Insel lebt, vielleicht sogar auf ihr geboren wurde, oder bereits seit vielen Jahrhunderten hier familiär verwurzelt ist, könnte es passieren, das man hin und wieder die Distanz verliert, den Abstand zu dem, was ganz nah und vertraut ist, als würde man den Wald vor lauter Bäumen nicht erkennen.

When one lives permanently on an island, maybe having been born there or being tied to it by century-old family roots, it can happen that perspective is lost, that, by being so tied to what is close and familiar to us, we can’t see the wood for the trees.

Ein wesentlicher Unterschied zu dem Blick nach innen, ist der Blick von außen, den der kurzfristige Besucher erhält, weil er nicht eintaucht in das tägliche Zusammensein der Menschen, die hier leben und arbeiten und aufeinander angewiesen sind. Die sich eine Existenz geschaffen haben, um hier sein zu dürfen. Ja genau, „dürfen“! Sie haben sich nicht verlesen.

This insight bears no relation to the appreciation of an outsider, a visitor, someone who is not immersed in the daily coexistence of the people who live and work on the island and who depend on one another, the people who have forged an existence that gives them the privilege to live here. Yes, that’s right, the privilege!

Per me, la possibilità di trascorrere tanto del mio tempo a Formentera è un regalo che mi dà la vita e che accetto senza chiedermi: perché a me e non a qualcun altro? Ormeggiare la barca o arrivare con il traghetto nel porto de La Sabina è sempre come tornare a casa, ritrovarsi con tutto ciò che, per me, è ciò che conta, vivendo in armonia con la natura e in pace con gli altri in un ambiente in cui ci si sente a casa.

Para mí, la posibilidad de pasar gran parte de mi tiempo en Formentera es un regalo que me brinda la vida y que acepto sin preguntarme ¿por qué yo y no otra? Atracar con un barco o el ferry en el puerto de la Sabina es cada vez como llegar al hogar, un reencuentro con todo lo que, para mí, es lo que importa: vivir en armonía con la naturaleza y convivir apaciblemente en comunidad con otras personas en un entorno en el que te sientes como en casa. Cuando nos integramos en la animada vida isleña y nos interesamos por las historias de gente variopinta, procedente de todas partes de la tierra, podemos descubrir cosas sorprendentes. En los encuentros con otras personas, todo un mundo de peculiaridades humanas se abre ante nosotros como un abanico multicolor. Sorprende cada vez cuánto puede cambiar el estado de ánimo de algunos de nuestros congéneres en relación con los que les rodean. Hay algunos, por ejemplo, cuyo barómetro emocional salta continuamente de un extremo a otro y que siempre proporcionan sorpresas porque jamás se puede predecir qué talante reflejará su rostro de un momento a otro. Unas veces pasan a tu lado sin saludarte o están tristes y enfadados con el mundo, quejándose de nimiedades, y otras salen de su concha para elevarse cual ave fénix en el cielo de la felicidad y se muestran simpáticos con todo el mundo, enseñando el lado agradable y encantador que todo ser humano posee aunque no siempre se descubra a primera vista.

Quando ci integriamo nella vita vivace dell’isola e ci interessiamo alle storie di tutti i tipi di persone, da ogni parte della terra, possiamo scoprire cose incredibili. Nell’incontro con altre persone, un intero mondo di particolarità umane si apre davanti a noi come un ventaglio multicolore. È sorprendente ogni volta quanto può cambiare l’umore di alcuni dei nostri simili in relazione a coloro che li circondano. Ci sono alcuni, ad esempio, il cui barometro emozionale salta continuamente da un estremo all’altro e che sempre ci sorprende, perché non si può mai prevedere quale stato d’animo rifletterà il loro volto da un momento con l’altro. A volte ti passano di fianco senza salutare o sono tristi e arrabbiati con il mondo, lamentandosi per nulla, mentre altre volte escono dal loro guscio sollevandosi felici come una fenice nel cielo e si mostrano amichevoli con tutti, mostrando il lato gradevole e affascinante che ogni essere umano possiede, anche se non si lascia sempre scoprire a prima vista. Poi ci sono altri il cui barometro interiore segna quasi sempre tempo soleggiato e tranquillo, persone gradevoli che ti fanno sentire bene, che per principio si comportano in modo rispettoso, non per sentirsi amati, ricevere conferme o essere lasciati in pace. Si potrebbe dire che siano come i tartufi, si trovano raramente, sono delicati e di grande valore. Sembra che la vita sorrida loro sempre e che, anche quando porta loro pena o dolore, la accettino come una parte del destino. Se si guarda attentamente, si possono scoprire molti di questi “tartufi” a Formentera.

Taucht man für eine längere Zeit hinein, in das rege Inselleben und nimmt Anteil an den Geschichten der bunt gemischten Menschen aus unterschiedlichen Teilen der Erde, erlebt man zum Teil Erstaunliches. Die gesamte Klaviatur menschlicher Eigenarten entfaltet sich in den Begegnungen, wie ein farbenreicher Fächer. Immer wieder ist man überrascht darüber, welch wechselnde Stimmungslage mancher Mitmensch an seine Umgebung verteilt. Da sind beispielsweise die einen, deren inneres Gefühlsbarometer ständig hoch und runter hopst, die beständig für Überraschungen sorgen, weil man nie vorhersagen kann, welche Laune ihr Gesicht im nächsten Moment bekleidet. Mal huschen sie grußlos vorüber oder grämen sich und führen Beschwerdereden über Bedeutungslosigkeiten, um dann plötzlich aus ihrem Schneckenhaus heraus, wie Phönix in den Himmel der Glückseligkeit aufzusteigen und ihre angenehme, liebenswerte Seite auszubreiten, die jedem Menschen innewohnt, auch wenn wir sie nicht immer auf Anhieb erkennen können.

For me, the possibility to spend a great part of my time in Formentera is a gift that gives me life and that I accept without asking myself why me and not another? To dock in the port of La Savina after a journey by boat or ferry always feels like coming home, a reunion with all that, to me, is what matters: living in harmony with nature and living peacefully together in community with others in an environment where you feel at home. When we integrate into the vibrant island life and we take an interest in the stories of a diverse range of people from all over the world, we can discover surprising things. In the encounters with other people, a whole world of human peculiarities opens before us like a multicoloured fan. It surprises me each time how much the mood of some people can change in response to those around them. There are some, for example, whose emotional barometer jumps continuously from one extreme to another and who always surprise us because we can never predict what mood will be reflected on their face from one moment to another. Sometimes they walk past you without a greeting or they are sad and angry with the world, complaining of trivialities, and others come out of their shell to rise like a phoenix into the sky out of happiness and are friendly with

Für mich war und ist die Möglichkeit auf Formentera sehr viel Lebenszeit verbringen zu dürfen, ein Geschenk des Lebens, das ich dankbar annehme, ohne weiterhin danach zu fragen, warum ich, und nicht eine andere? Mit dem Boot oder der Fähre am Hafen von La Sabina anzulegen ist jedes Mal wie ein erfreuliches nach Hause kommen zu dem, was mir persönlich bedeutsam erscheint: Das Leben in der Natur und ein friedliches, gemeinschaftliches Zusammenleben mit anderen Menschen, in einer Umgebung, in der man sich zu Hause fühlt.

Als auch an die Anderen, deren Schönwetterphase beinahe beständig freundlich und friedlich zu bleiben scheint. Menschen, in deren Nähe man sich wohl und behaglich fühlt, die respektvoll und hilfsbereit aus Überzeugung handeln, nicht um geliebt, bestätigt oder in Ruhe gelassen zu werden. Vielleicht, weil sie wie Trüffel sind, selten, kostbar und auserwählt. Ihnen scheint das Schicksal äußerst 13

Luego hay otros cuyo barómetro interior señala casi siempre tiempo soleado y tranquilo, personas agradables que te hacen sentir bien, que actúan de forma respetuosa y amble por convicción, no para sentirse queridos o reafirmados o para que les deje en paz. Se podría decir que son como trufas: se les encuentra raras veces, son delicadas y muy valiosas. Parece que la vida siempre les sonríe e incluso cuando les depara penas o dolor, lo aceptan como una parte del destino. Si se mira atentamente, se pueden descubrir bastantes de estas “trufas” en Formentera. Muchas de ellas prefieren la tranquilidad del anonimato y permanecen escondidas, otras, en cambio, disfrutan bajo los focos de la atención pública. Una de estas “trufitas” que se pueden encontrar aquí, llamémosla Martha, vive desde hace más de treinta años en esta islita bendecida por el sol. Con su perseverancia y entusiasmo ha logrado labrarse una existencia lejos de su patria. Unos días de vacaciones cuando era muy joven, durante los que encontró el amor de un hombre, se convirtieron en semanas, en meses y años. Pedaleando con su bicicleta, embriagada de sol, playa y mar, del aire puro y de los colores vivos, exploraba la isla y se topó con un hippie de la vieja escuela, una “rara avis” que la animó a quedarse. Vivieron tiempos de frenesí, llenos de pasión y sumidos en un sueño de libertad sin cadenas. Se ganaban la vida confeccionando bonitas joyas y objetos de cuero que vendían a los turistas en los meses de verano, y en invierno, cuando la humedad se colaba en su morada veraniega, viajaban a lugares más calurosos. Cuando, repentinamente, él fue llamado al paraíso eterno dejándola atrás en este mundo terrenal, ella decidió quedarse aquí, en la isla. Hoy vive cerca de San Francisco, en una preciosa finca centenaria en medio del campo, tal como lo hacían antaño los payeses. Ella misma restauró la finca en largos años de dedicado trabajo, arreglando y amueblándola con mucho estilo y buen gusto. Tanto en su cocina

Molti di loro preferiscono la tranquillità dell’anonimato e rimangono nascosti, altri, invece, godono dei riflettori dell’attenzione pubblica. Uno dei “tartufi” che si possono trovare qui sull’isola è Martha, che ha vissuto per più di trent’anni in questa piccola isola benedetta dal sole. Con tenacia ed entusiasmo è riuscita a ritagliarsi un’esistenza lontano dalla propria terra d’origine. Alcuni giorni di vacanza quando era molto giovane e nel corso dei quali ha incontrato l’amore di un uomo, sono poi diventati settimane, mesi e anni. Pedalando con la sua bicicletta, inebriata di sole, sabbia e mare, aria fresca e colori vivaci, esplorava l’isola e incontrò un hippie della vecchia scuola, una persona di rara qualità che la incoraggiò a rimanere. Vissero momenti di frenesia, pieni di passione e immersi in un sogno di libertà senza catene. Si guadagnavano da vivere creando bei gioielli e oggetti di cuoio che vendevano ai turisti durante la stagione estiva, mentre in inverno, quando l’umidità filtrava nella loro residenza estiva, viaggiavano verso luoghi più caldi. Quando, improvvisamente, lui fu chiamato al Paradiso eterno lasciandola dietro di sé in questo mondo terreno, lei decise di rimanere qui sull’isola. Oggi vive vicino a San Francisco, in una bella tenuta secolare in mezzo alla campagna, così come vivevano una volta i contadini. Lei stessa restaurò la fattoria durante lunghi anni di lavoro, restaurandola e arredandola con grande stile e buon gusto. Tanto nella sua cucina come nel salotto o nel portico, si respirano confort, serenità e amore per il dettaglio. Il carattere aperto di Martha e il suo genuino interesse per la vita degli altri invitano a chiacchierare con lei. Le piace sia ascoltare che parlare, una virtù che raramente si trova in persone che non appartengono all’unione di ascoltatori professionali. Emana fascino e civetteria, talvolta umorismo, e mostra una sagacità e acume per il quale segretamente la invidio tanto come per le sue belle gambe e pancia meravigliosamente piatta grazie

Eine dieser Trüffelchen, nennen wir sie Martha, denen man hier begegnet, lebt seit mehr als dreißig Jahren auf diesem lichtverwöhnten Eiland. In ihrer unermüdlichen, fleißigen Art hat sie es vermocht, sich fern der Heimat eine Existenz aufzubauen. Aus ein paar Urlaubstagen in jungen Jahren, in denen sie die Liebe eines Mannes fand, wurden Wochen zu Monaten und Jahren. Berauscht von Sonne, Strand und Meer, frischer Luft und schönen Farben, trat sie in die Pedalen ihres Fahrrads, erkundete die Gegend und traf dabei auf einen Hippie alter Schule. Einen „bunten Vogel“, der sie zum Bleiben animierte. Sie verbrachten ungestüme, wilde Zeiten, trunken vor Leidenschaft und dem Traum von Freiheit ohne Zwänge. Sie lebten von selbsterzeugten schönem Schmuck und Lederwaren, die sie in den Sommermonaten an Touristen verkauften und reisten im Winter, wenn die Feuchtigkeit in ihre Sommerbehausung kroch, in wärmere Gegenden. Als das ewige Paradies ihn plötzlich zu sich nahm, blieb

Then there are others whose internal barometer almost always indicates sunny and calm weather; welcoming people that make you feel well, that behave in a respectful and kind manner out of conviction, not to feel loved or reaffirmed or to be left in peace. You could say that they are like truffles: they are rarely found, delicate and very valuable. It seems as if life always smiles at them and even when it imparts punishments or pain, they accept it as a part of their destiny. If you look carefully, you can discover many of these “truffles” in Formentera. Many of them prefer the tranquillity of anonymity and remain hidden, others, instead, enjoy being in the public eye.

One of these “little truffles”, let’s call her Martha, has inhabited this sun-blessed island for more than thirty years. With her perseverance and enthusiasm she has managed to carve out a life far from her homeland. A few days on holiday when she was very young, during which she found the love of a man, turned into weeks, months and years. Pedalling on her bicycle, intoxicated by the sun, beach and sea, by the pure air and bright colours, she explored the island and ran into an old school hippie, a “rare bird” that encouraged her to stay. They lived frenzied times, full of passion and engulfed in a dream of freedom without chains. They made a living by making beautiful jewellery and leather objects that they sold to tourists in the summer months, and in winter, as the humidity crept in, they travelled to warmer places. When, suddenly, he was called to the eternal paradise leaving her behind in this earthly world, she decided to remain here, on the island. Today she lives near San Francisco, in a beautiful old farmhouse in the middle of the fields, just as farmers did long ago. She restored the property herself with long years of dedicated work, fixing it and furnishing it with 15

como en su salón o en el porche se respira confort, placidez y amor al detalle. El carácter abierto de Martha y su genuino interés en la vida de los demás invitan a charlar con ella. Le gusta tanto escuchar como hablar, una virtud que rara vez se encuentra en personas que no pertenecen al gremio de los oyentes profesionales. Irradia encanto y coquetería a la vez que humor y muestra una sagacidad y agudeza por la que la envidio secretamente tanto como por sus hermosas piernas y su vientre maravillosamente plano gracias a mucho ejercicio. Como mujer de negocios es totalmente fiable y justa, procurando siempre que ambas partes se beneficien por igual. Le indigna cuando un socio comercial no cumple con lo acordado o cuando alguien intenta regatear para bajar el precio convenido a pesar de haber recibido un servicio impecable. Tiene una memoria de elefante y es capaz de recordar las cosas del pasado con una exactitud pasmosa. Me asombro cada vez que encuentro en alguien esta habilidad. Yo estaría perdida sin mis apuntes y sería incapaz de acordarme de un día concreto y mucho menos de describir con detalle lo ocurrido en él. Por supuesto, esta perla tiene, como todo el mundo, un lado menos brillante que, de vez en cuando, hace su aparición para llamar la atención. Mirándolo bien, nuestros mejores dones son, a la vez, nuestros mayores retos. Fue hace muchos años, se escapa de mi memoria dónde y cuándo exactamente, que nos enfrascamos por primera vez en una conversación personal. Hace veinte años, era considerablemente más fácil llevar la cuenta del número de isleños - cuando me hice residente no había más de tres mil habitantes en la isla. La gente se encontraba regularmente por casualidad, haciendo la compra, delante de la escuela o en uno de los pocos bares y restaurantes abiertos a primera hora del día, y también en las fiestas que daban amigos o en las festividades oficiales en honor a San Francisco, San Fernando o en El Pilar de la Mola.

Ha una memoria da elefante ed è in grado di ricordare gli eventi del passato con una precisione sorprendente. Mi sorprendo ogni volta che trovo in qualcuno questa abilità. Io sarei persa senza i miei appunti e non sarei in grado di ricordare un particolare giorno, nè tanto meno descriverne in dettaglio gli avvenimenti. Naturalmente, questa perla possiede, come tutti, un lato meno brillante che di tanto in tanto, fa la sua apparizione per attirare l’attenzione. A conti fatti, i nostri migliori doni sono, allo stesso tempo, le nostre più grandi sfide. Molti anni fa, sfugge alla mia memoria esattamente dove e quando, ci ritrovammo per la prima volta nel mezzo di una conversazione personale. Vent’anni fa era molto più facile tenere il conto del numero degli isolani, quando diventai residente non c’erano infatti più di tre mila abitanti nell’isola. Le persone si incontravano regolarmente per caso, facendo la spesa, di fronte alla scuola o ad uno dei pochi bar e ristoranti aperti di prima mattina, e anche alle feste di amici o durante le feste ufficiali in onore di San Francisco, San Fernando o El Pilar de la Mola. Di tanto in tanto si incontrava gente conosciuta anche al tramonto, durante passeggiate serali. Quando, nel periodo più freddo dell’anno, si passeggiava per i sentieri rocciosi al confine con i campi, si potevano ancora vedere le contadine con i vestiti tradizionali sedute sui muretti, chiacchierando con i vicini o con le loro capre fino all’ultima luce del giorno. Le loro voci acute scavalcavano le mura e gli animali sollevavano la testa, belando allegramente e si avvicinavano a tentoni poiché alle capre, una volta raggiunta l’età adulta, veniva legata una zampa all’altra ad una

Sie empört sich, wenn manch ein Geschäftspartner, seine Vereinbarung nicht erfüllt und mit fadenscheinig wirkender Ausrede versucht, den vereinbarten Preis trotz anstandslos erhaltener Leistung zu verringern. Sie hat das Gedächtnis eines Elefanten würde vielleicht die Fähigkeit beschreiben, sich Vergangenes bis auf den Tag genau zu merken. Ich staune immer wieder, wenn ich bei Menschen dieses Talent entdecke, denn ohne meine Aufzeichnungen, wäre ich meistens verloren und nicht in der Lage, weder den Tag, noch dessen Inhalt, detailliert beschreiben zu können. Natürlich hat diese Perle, wie wir anderen Menschen auch, eine weniger schillernde Seite, die hin und wieder auf der Bühne des Moments erscheint, um Aufmerksamkeit zu fordern. Genau genommen, sind unsere größten Gaben, zugleich auch unsere größten Herausforderungen.

She has the memory of an elephant and is capable of remembering things of the past with astonishing accuracy. I am in awe whenever I find this ability in someone. I would be lost without my notes and would be unable to remember a specific day and much less to describe in detail what happened during it. Of course,

De vez en cuando también se encontraban conocidos a la hora del crepúsculo durante los paseos de la tarde. Cuando se paseaba en época más fresca del año por los caminos pedregosos bordeando los campos, aún se podían ver algunas payesas en sus trajes típicos sentadas en las tapias, charlando a la última luz del día con sus vecinas o con sus cabras. Sus voces agudas revoloteaban por encima de los muros y los animales levantaban sus cabezas, balaban alegremente y se acercaban a trompicones. Es que a las cabras, en cuanto llegaban a la edad adulta, se les ataba una pata a una mano con suficiente holgura para que pudiesen andar pero impidiéndoles saltar los muros y dispersarse. Algunos de los primeros extranjeros que visitaban la isla, convencidos defensores de los animales, se sintieron llamados a erradicar esta práctica y cortaron a escondidas esas cuerdas. Esta acción bien intencionada generó una situación bastante caótica ya que las cabras, libres de sus ataduras, recorrieron los campos comiendo todo lo que encontraron en su camino, no respetando ni las huertas ni las macetas. Más de una cabra escapista tuvo que pagar su libertad con la vida, siendo atropellada por un coche o destripada por un perro de caza cuyo territorio había tenido la equivocación de invadir. Hoy esta historia puede parecer una anécdota graciosa, pero en aquellos días los afectados derramaron más de una lágrima. Ahora se empiezan a abrir muy lentamente las puertas de mi memoria: lo más probable es que Martha y yo nos vimos por primera vez en casa de un amigo común, en una de las noches de sábado en las que, durante muchos inviernos, organizaba jam sessions con otros músicos y amigos. Mientras los músicos tocaban, los numerosos invitados animaban el ambiente, aplaudiendo a los artistas y charlando relajadamente, arrancando a bailar cuando el ritmo de la música se hacía irresistible y los pies cobraban vida propia. Martha llevaba una minifalda y su preciosa melena de rizos rubios destacaba resplandeciente de

distanza sufficiente perché potessero camminare, ma impedendo loro di saltare i muri e disperdersi. Alcuni dei primi stranieri che visitarono l’isola, convinti difensori degli animali, si sentirono chiamati a sradicare questa pratica e cominciarono a tagliare di nascosto i lacci. Questa azione, pur guidata da buone intenzioni, generò una situazione piuttosto caotica poiché le capre, libere dai loro legami, cominciarono a correre per i campi mangiando tutto quello che incontravano sul loro cammino, senza rispettare né orti né giardini. Più di una capra tra quelle evase pagò la propria libertà con la vita, venendo investita da una macchina o sventrata da un cane da caccia il cui territorio aveva invaso per sbaglio. Oggi questa storia può sembrare divertente, ma in quei giorni fece versare più di una lacrima.

Hin und wieder traf man auch beim Abendspaziergang in der Natur während der blauen Stunde aufeinander. Denn wanderte man in den kühleren Jahreszeiten auf den holperigen Caminos entlang der Felder, dann sah man gelegentlich noch in Trachten gekleidete Bäuerinnen im letzten Licht des Tages auf ihren Mauern sitzen und ein Schwätzchen mit ihrer Nachbarin oder ihren Ziegen halten. Ihre hohe Stimmlage hüpfte über die Mauern und die Tiere hoben die Köpfe an, meckerten zufrieden und kamen humpelnd herangelaufen. Sobald die Ziegen erwachsen waren, wurden jeweils ein Vorder- und ein Hinterbein mit genügend Abstand zusammen gebunden, um die Tiere daran zu hindern, über die Mauern zu hüpfen und sich zu zerstreuen. Einige Tierschutzfreunde unter den ersten ausländischen Besuchern fühlten sich berufen diese Praxis der zusammen gebundenen Beine zu unterbinden und durchtrennten heimlich die Seile. Die gut gemeinte Tat führte zu einem nicht unerheblichen Chaos. Die Tiere zogen kreuz und quer über die Felder und fraßen alles kurz und klein. Sie machten weder halt vor den Gemüsebeeten, noch vor den Blumentöpfen der Nachbarschaft. Manch eine der befreiten Ziegen bezahlte ihre gegebene Freiheit gar mit dem Leben. Angefahren von einem Auto oder gerissen von einem Jagdhund, in dessen Territorium sie versehentlich eingedrungen war. Heute kann man über diese Geschichte schmunzeln, damals trug sie manche Träne in die Augen der Betroffenen.

this pearl has, like everything in the world, a less dazzling side that, from time to time, makes an appearance. On balance, our best gifts can be our biggest challenges. It was many years ago, the exact time and place escape me, that we engaged in a personal conversation for the first time. Twenty years ago it was considerably easier to keep track of the number of islanders – when I became a resident there were no more than three thousand inhabitants on the island. People regularly had chance encounters, whilst shopping, by the school gates or in one of the few bars and restaurants opened first thing in the morning, and also at friend’s parties or at official festivities in honour of San Francisco, San Fernando or at El Pilar de La Mola.

Occasionally you also met acquaintances at dusk, during late evening walks. Whilst walking along the stony paths bordering the fields during the fresher parts of the year, it was still possible to see farmers in their typical clothing sitting on a wall, chatting to their neighbour or their goats with the last of the daylight. Their high pitched voices fluttered above the walls and the animals raised their heads, bleated happily and continued hobbling around. They did this because as soon as goats reached adult age, one of their front and back legs were tied with enough slack to allow them to walk but preventing them from jumping over walls and scattering. Some of the first foreigners who visited the island, firm animal rights defenders, felt called to eradicate this practice and secretly cut these strings. This well-intentioned action generated a fairly chaotic situation as the goats, free from their restraints, roamed the fields eating everything in their path, whether in vegetable gardens or pots. More than one escapist goat paid for its freedom with its life, being run over by a car or gutted by a hunting dog whose territory it had mistakenly invaded. Today this story may seem like a funny anecdote, but in those days those affected shed more than one tear. 19

Le gustaba reír y bailar y de vez en cuando tomaba una copa de más, lo que la volvía aún más dicharachera y sociable. Después de haber compartido por primera vez la pista de baile me abordó diciendo: “Soy Martha, ¿y quién eres tú?” Desde entonces han pasado casi veinte inviernos y nos hemos visto en muchas ocasiones, unas veces solo por un rato, otras por más tiempo. Nos hemos acercado y distanciado de nuevo, tuvimos encuentros bastante agitados y otros muy relajados, pero siempre perduró un vínculo bien intencionado y amigable entre su mundo y el mío, por muy diferentes que puedan parecer a veces. “Trufas” como Martha añaden una componente humana a la belleza de la isla. Esperas con alegría volver a verles cuando regresas a casa de lugares lejanos y vuelves a encontrarte con las personas que, a lo largo de los años, has llegado a querer simplemente porque son como son. ¡Disfrutad los días y las noches de la isla! Ora si cominciano ad aprire lentamente le porte della mia memoria: Io e Martha ci incontrammo probabilmente a casa di un amico comune che per diversi anni durante l’inverno organizzava il sabato notti di jam session a cui partecipavano altri musicisti e amici. Mentre i musicisti suonavano, i numerosi invitati animavano l’ambiente applaudendo gli artisti e chiacchierando rilassati, iniziando a ballare quando il ritmo della musica diventava cosi irresistibile che i piedi si muovevano da soli. Martha indossava una minigonna e la sua bella criniera di riccioli biondi risplendeva in mezzo alla folla, così come il suo tanto personale stile d’abbigliamento con cui sapeva far risaltare il proprio fascino. Le piaceva ridere e ballare e, occasionalmente, capitava che bevesse un bicchierino di troppo, diventando ancora più loquace e socievole. Incontrandoci per la prima volta nella pista da ballo, mi rivolse lei la parola dicendo: “Io sono Martha e tu chi sei?” Da allora sono passati quasi venti inverni e ci siamo viste in tante occasioni, a volte solo per poco, altre più a lungo. Ci siamo avvicinate e poi allontanate di nuovo, abbiamo avuto incontri piuttosto frenetici e altri molto rilassati, ma é sempre rimasto un legame tra il suo mondo e il mio, per quanto diversi a possano a volte sembrare, sempre motivato da buone intenzioni e amicizia, “Tartufi” come Martha aggiungono una componente umana alla bellezza dell’isola. É ogni volta una gioia rivedersi quando si ritorna a casa da luoghi lontani, tornando a incontrare le persone che, nel corso degli anni, hai imparato ad amare semplicemente per quello sono. Goditi giorno e notte sull’isola! Fino al prossimo anno. D

Seitdem sind fast zwanzig weitere Winter und viele weitere kurze oder längere Begegnungen verstrichen. Wir sind uns näher gerückt und haben uns wieder entfernt. Manche Begegnungen verliefen hektisch, andere entspannt. Doch stets blieb eine wohlmeinende, freundliche Verbindlichkeit bestehen, zwischen ihrer und meiner Welt, so unterschiedlich sie auch manchmal scheinen. Trüffel wie Martha fügen der Inselschönheit noch eine menschliche Komponente hinzu, auf die man sich freut, wenn man aus der Ferne nach Hause zurückkehrt und den Menschen begegnet, die einem über Jahre ans Herz gewachsen sind, weil sie sind, wie sie sind. Genießen Sie die Tage und Nächte auf der Insel. Bis zum nächsten Jahr. D

Now the doors to my memory are starting the slowly open: more than likely Martha and I met for the first time one a Saturday night at a mutual friend’s house where, during many winters, they held jam sessions with musicians and friends. Whilst the musicians played, the numerous guests created a lively atmosphere, applauding the artists and chatting in a relaxed manner, starting to dance when the music was irresistible and their feet took on a life of their own. Martha wore a miniskirt and her gorgeous mane of shining blond curls stood out from the crowd, as did her unique dress style which she used to enhance her good looks. She liked to laugh and dance and occasionally had one too many drinks, which made her even more chatty and sociable. After sharing the dance floor for the first time she approached me saying: “I’m Martha, and who are you?”

Sehr gemächlich öffnen sich jetzt die Türen meiner Erinnerung. Wahrscheinlich begegneten Martha und ich uns das erste Mal im Winter neunzehnhundertachtundneunzig während einer der unterhaltsamen Musikabende eines gemeinsamen Freundes, der über viele Winter hinweg, jeden Samstag in seinem Haus, eine Jamsession mit anderen Musikern und Freunden veranstaltete. Während die Musiker aufspielten, sorgten die zahlreichen Gäste für das Ambiente aus Anerkennung und lockeren Gesprächen am Rande, die einige gerne durch Tanzeinlagen unterbrachen, sobald swingende Rhythmen ihre Beine zur Bewegung drängten. Martha trug Mini und ihre helle Lockenpracht schillerte aus der Menge heraus, ebenso wie ihr individueller Kleidungsstil, der ihre Vorzüge zu unterstreichen wusste. Sie lachte und tanzte gerne und trank auch mal ein Gläschen zu viel, was sie noch gesprächiger und geselliger werden ließ. Nach unserer ersten gemeinsamen Tanzflächenerfahrung sprach sie mich an und sagte: Ich bin die Martha und wer bist denn Du?

Almost twenty winters have passed since then and we have seen each other on many occasions, sometimes only briefly, other times for longer periods. We grew close and then became distant again, we had some very eventful meetings and some very relaxed ones, but there was always a positive and friendly link between her world and mine, despite how very different they could appear at times. “Truffles” like Martha add a human component to the beauty of the island. You joyfully anticipate seeing them again when you return home from far away places and you meet up again with people who, over the years, you’ve come to love simply because they are as they are. Formentera, la isla luminosa A la llegada a Formentera, bañada por una luz sin par e impregnada de los aromas de mar, pinos y hierbas silvestres, se intuye inmediatamente que esta isla es distinta a todo lo que la mayoría de los turistas conoce. Esta pequeña extensión de tierra, que tiene 18 km de longitud y no llega a dos kilómetros de anchura en algunos puntos, ofrece una mezcla incomparable de naturaleza, historia y el encanto de un antiguo paraíso hippie. Es famosa por sus hermosas playas de arena fina con aguas cristalinas color turquesa. La puerta a Formentera es La Savina, un pequeño pueblo portuario que es el escenario de todas las bienvenidas y despedidas y el único sitio donde atracan los barcos provenientes de Ibiza. Recibe su nombre de la conífera que caracteriza el paisaje, parco pero cautivador, de la isla. En el extremo este del puerto, donde anclan los yates y las embarcaciones deportivas, se respira cierto aire de lujo. La población principal de Formentera es Sant Francesc. Merece la pena darse una vuelta por su extensa zona peatonal o visitar el Museo Etnológico donde se exhiben herramientas agrícolas y de pesca. También tiene interés la iglesia fortificada. Sant Ferran está situado en el centro de la isla. Fue antaño el núcleo del movimiento hippie. Ahora encontrarás allí una maravillosa mezcla de restaurantes, bares y gente de diferentes culturas. Es Pujols es el centro turístico de la isla con un hermoso paseo marítimo nuevo, con numerosos bares y restaurantes los que, además de una amplia variedad gastronómica, ofrecen a sus clientes espectaculares vistas al mar. En temporada alta, se llena de vida y ajetreo – en especial por la noche – sin que este bullicio llegue a agobiar, y la cala con su playa tiene mucho encanto. Al pie de la meseta se encuentra Es Caló, un pequeño puerto natural con restaurantes que ofrecen románticas vistas al mar. La carretera termina en el faro de El Pilar de la Mola, emplazado en lo alto del acantilado a 140 metros sobre el mar.

Es Pujols ist das Touristenzentrum der Insel mit einer wunderschönen neuen Promenade, an der Sie aus einer der zahlreichen Restaurants oder Bars den Ausblick auf das Meer genießen können. In der Saison pulsiert hier besonders nachts das Leben. Überschaubar bleibt es trotzdem, und die Badebucht hat reichlich Charme. Am Fuß der Hochebene liegt Es Caló, ein kleiner Naturhafen mit Restaurants, die eine romantische Sicht über das Meer eröffnen. Die Straße, die einmal über die Insel führt, endet am Leuchtturm von El Pilar de la Mola, auf einer Steilküste 140 Meter über dem Meer.

Vestidos de batik, objetos de alfarería, incienso y cinturones de conchas – mercaderes barbudos venden aquí sus productos desde hace más de 40 años y jóvenes en busca de una vida alternativa se les unieron. Un encuentro nostálgico con souvenirs, artesanía y música en vivo. Uno de los mercadillos legendarios es el de La Mola que se celebra los miércoles y domingos de 16 a 21:30 horas. Por la mañana los tenderetes montados en Sant Francesc invitan a comprar bisutería artesanal, moda de rico colorido y calzado ligero de verano. Y cada martes y sábado de 10 a 14 horas se organiza un mercadillo detrás de la iglesia. Todas las noches abre el mercadillo hippie del paseo marítimo de Es Pujols. Del 1 de junio al 15 de septiembre puedes comprar desde las 10 de la mañana hasta la medianoche ropa vistosa y joyas originales en el paseo de la Marina de La Savina. O visita el mercadillo de arte en Sant Ferran cada día de 20 a 24 h (menos miércoles y domingos). Incluso se puede admirar in situ cómo los pintores plasman con sus pinceles la vida de esta bella isla. Cada noche podrás encontrar moda, joyas de diseño insólito, etc.

Música en las Plazas A partir de junio, un programa de música en vivo al aire libre, iniciado por varios municipios de Formentera, invita a disfrutar de las noches cálidas del verano. Cada jueves de mediados de junio hasta finales de septiembre hay música del mundo con el grupo “Antena Libre” en la Plaza Europa de Es Pujols, donde podrás escuchar música latina combinada con ritmos de todo el mundo. Además, a partir de mediados de junio, en julio y en septiembre se organiza cada martes 118

Di mattina, il centro di Sant Francesc ospita una collezione di bancarelle dove è possibile trovare gioielleria artigianale, moda colorata e scarpe estive e leggere. Ogni martedì e sabato dalle 10 alle 14 si organizza inoltre un mercatino dietro la chiesa, mentre ogni sera apre il mercatino hippie della passeggiata marittima di Es Pujols. Batik clothing, pottery, incense and seashell belts – some traders have been selling here for 40 years and have since been joined by youngsters in search of an alternative lifestyle. The legendary market of La Mola takes place on Wednesdays and Sundays from 4 pm to 9:30 pm. In the mornings, Sant Francesc has stands selling artisan jewellery, colourful fashion and light summer shoe and a flea market is held behind the church on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm. Every night, Es Pujols holds a hippie market along its seafront promenade. From 1 June to 15 September it is possible to shop for lovely clothing and original jewellery from 10 am until midnight in the promenade of La Savina Marina.

Le serate di jazz nella piazza della chiesa di Sant Francesc sono quasi un’istituzione, con il gruppo “Jazz Connotation”, ogni Sabato dalle ore 22. In alcune occasioni il gruppo è accompagnato anche da musicisti ospiti provenienti da Francia, Germania o Spagna, creando un’esperienza musicale unica. Cinema all’aperto Da luglio a settembre, il Comune di Formentera offre poi serate di cinema all’aperto con un programma di film internazionali che si terranno ogni martedì nel retro della chiesa di Sant Francesc e ogni giovedi nella piazza della chiesa di Sant Ferran. Vengono poi proiettati film internazionali anche ogni venerdí presso la Casa del Poble de La Mola. Le proiezioni iniziano alle 22h.

Von Juli bis September bietet die Inselregierung eine Freilichtbühne mit internationalen Kinofilmen an. Jeden Dienstag in Sant Francesc hinter der Kirche und jeden Donnerstag in Sant Ferran auf dem Kirchplatz kann man ein wunderbares Kinoerlebnis genießen. Freitagabends gibt es ebenfalls internationale Filme auf La Mola in der Casa del Poble. Beginn ist jeweils um 22 Uhr.

From July to September, the council will set up an outdoors cinema with a program of international films to be screened every Tuesday behind the Church of Sant Francesc and every Thursday in the church square of Sant Ferran.
