There are many touching stories, as plentiful as the people who passed through here for longer or shorter spells. Everyone who stays does so for a special reason. Some come to drop out, shift gears or they simply get stuck. Others come due to hardship or for financial reasons. Many are enchanted by passionate love, often born in the warming hues of the early and late moments, by evanescent or burgeoning daylight, or nourished in the white shimmering nights of the waxing and waning moon. Nature bestows us with pure romance. A few summers ago I encountered a young Spanish couple around midday. I estimated they were in their late twenties which later proved correct. They came to the little beach bar where I was sitting and writing. They were holding hands and sat at the table next to mine. Two pairs of brown eyes were drinking each 109

Hay muchas historias que tocan el corazón, el alma, tantas historias como gente que mora por más o menos tiempo en la isla. Todo el que se queda lo hace por una razón personal especial, unos vienen para dejar atrás su antigua vida, otros, para hacer algo nuevo y otros simplemente porque se han dejado cautivar por la magia de la isla. También hay quien se queda por necesidad o razones económicas. A no pocos les hechiza un amor apasionado que muchas veces nace en estos momentos de tonos cálidos cuando se desvanece la luz al atardecer, cuando asoma el alba, y crece en aquellas noches claras a la luz de la luna. La naturaleza regala el ambiente romántico que hace florecer al amor…

Ci sono tante storie che toccano il cuore e l’anima, tante quante sono le persone che hanno vissuto per più o meno tempo sull’isola. Tutti coloro che restano lo fanno per un motivo personale speciale, alcuni vengono per lasciarsi alle spalle la loro vecchia vita, altri per fare qualcosa di nuovo e altri semplicemente perché sono rimasti affascinati dalla magia dell’isola. E poi c’è chi sceglie di restare per necessità o per ragioni economiche. Non pochi vengono stregati da un amore appassionato che spesso nasce in questi momenti fatti di colori caldi, quando la luce si affievolisce al tramonto, quando sorge l’alba, e cresce nelle notti rischiarate dalla luna. La natura offre quell’atmosfera romantica entro la quale sboccia l’amore.

Hace algunos veranos, sentada al mediodía en un pequeño chiringuito, escribiendo, vi llegar a una pareja de jóvenes españoles enamorados, calculé que tendrían los veinte años ya cumplidos, efectivamente, así era. Gustosamente contestaron mi pregunta sobre su primer encuentro, ella hablaba animadamente mientras él escuchaba embelesado, absorbiendo cada palabra que salía de su carnosa boca: aquel primer día se quedaron hasta mucho después de apagarse los últimos rayos de sol, sentados cada uno en su mesa, escuchando el silencio de la noche mientras la luna emergía en el este, transformando el mar en un tapiz de brillos plateados. Se quedaron sentados, cautivados el uno por el otro, hasta que desapareció el último de los clientes y el bar echó el cierre. Como él no fue capaz de dar el primer paso habló ella y preguntó, con aparente desparpajo, si no tendría tanta hambre como ella. Puó darsi che in questi momenti di profonda infatuazione il mondo paia riempirsi di musica celestiale e che i giorni passino pieni di armonia e gioia, ma che questa magia svanisca, una volta atterrati sulla realtà dell’isola.

One often forgets that we are on a small island and nearly everything that’s needed has to come via water before it can be bought in the restaurants, bars and shops. Nunca deberíamos olvidar dar las gracias a los que nos prestan sus servicios y dan lo mejor de sí para que nos sintamos a gusto. En algunas ocasiones puede que haya opiniones divergentes sobre lo que debería ser lo mejor, pero por lo menos es un asunto sobre el que se puede discutir. Nos podríamos preguntar, por ejemplo, si forzosamente hay que utilizar el entorno como cenicero y tirar, sin pararse a pensar, las colillas encendidas por la ventanilla del coche o desde la moto a las calles, caminos y al campo. A volte si dimentica che la nostra è una piccola isola e quasi tutto ció si compra in bar, ristoranti e negozi deve essere portato dall’altra parte del mare. Durante i caldi mesi estivi, camion cisterna percorrono l’isola giorno e notte senza riposo, riempiendo i serbatoi delle case, perchè le persone possano fare la doccia, cucinare e lavare. I traghetti non solo scaricano centinaia di turisti, ma portano anche carichi giornalieri di cibo, bevande e tutti i tipi di beni di consumo necessari per la vita quotidiana. I lavoratori addetti al settore dei servizi, in particolare di pulizia e manutenzione, del settore alberghiero e dipendenti di aziende di noleggio, auto e moto, lavorano per diversi mesi, in molti casi senza un giorno di riposo, affinché voi cari visitatori possiate portare con voi un piacevole ricordo della vostra vacanza. Non dovremmo mai dimenticarci di ringraziare coloro che ci forniscono il loro servizio e fanno del loro meglio per farci sentire a nostro agio.
