Merry Christmas to all

By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

Four-legged holiday: Santa stopped by to vist with every one and every animal at the seventh annual Santa Cause Charity Car Show put on by the La Habra Host Lions last Saturday. This year's event was located in the parking lot between the Regal Theater and Banc of California.

Francis appointed Heights mayor By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

The La Habra Heights city council swore in two new city council members and voted unanimously to appoint Roy Francis mayor for the next year. Newly re-elected Council member Brian Bergman was named Mayor Pro Tem. The council recognized Jane Williams for her year of service as mayor. FRANCIS The council appointed members to various committees. Bergman was reappointed to the Investment Advisement Committee. Williams and Carey Klingfus were appointed to the Audit (Budget and Finance) Committee.

Francis and Zezula were named to the California Contract Cities Association. As mayor, Francis was appointed to the California Joint Powers Insurance Authority. Williams and Francis will remain on the Hillside Open Space Education Coalition. Francis and Bergman were appointed as representatives to the Los Angeles County Sanitation District. Bergman and Klingfus are delegates on the League of California Cities. Zezula and Bergman were named as delegates to the Southern California Association of Governments. Williams and Zezula were appointed representatives to the Wildlife Corridor Conservation Authority. Francis said that he is looking forward to helping lead the city as mayor and is honored by the council's confidence in him for the position. "There's going to be a lot of work ahead," Francis said. "I can guarantee you that the council will do the best that they can for the city. "

The La Habra mayor’s gavel was passed from Rose Espinoza to Tim Shaw at last week’s city council meeting. The members of the city council unanimously voted Shaw to his second time as mayor. Espinoza was recognized by community, county and state officials for her work the past year as mayor. During her time as Mayor, the city saw great change. The opening of the SHAW new City Hall Building, the approval of many construction projects, the annexation of the remaining county islands and the continued balancing of the city’s budget. Shaw noted that one of his first things to do as mayor is to start the repaving project of Lambert Road. The statement brought applause from those gathered in the council chambers. He noted that east Lambert will have to wait until the Beckman commercial project is completed in the City of Fullerton. Shaw said that he is hoping to work with the state and county to help develop a re-pavement plan for the city’s arterial roads, which include Harbor, Beach, Whittier and La Habra Boulevards. He added that he would look to continue, and finish, the repaving project for the city’s alleys. He wants to make sure the newly annexed areas are transitioned into the city seamlessly. And he wants to start working with the community on developing Vista Grande Park into a space that's useful for everyone and continue with the development of the bike trail. Shaw said that he is looking forward to helping lead the city in the next year. Michael Blazey was voted Mayor Pro Tem.

Happy kids: Children from the Boys and Girls Club pose with Santa after they had breakfast and received a toy as part of Señor Campos Restaurant's annual holiday breakfast.

Señor Campos hosts Boys and Girls Club kids for a meal

More than 40 children from the Boys and Girls Club were treated to a breakfast and a visit from Santa at Señor Campos Restaurant in La Habra. The tradition happens each year where children walk from the nearby club to the restaurant and enjoy a holiday meal. Santa made a visit to a room filled with smiling faces. He brought each boy and girl a special toy. Plans for next year's event are already underway.

supply power to the entire building in case of a power outage. All of the windows will be replaced with bullet resistant glass. A new front entry and a new roof will also be added. An eight foot concrete block wall is being built around the perimeter of the property. The south and west sections are included in the remodeling budget. The east and north sections will be constructed by City Ventures as part of their housing development. The block wall will surround the police station and secure the entire property. All of the additions will be stuccoed and painted to match the City Hall and Community Services buildings. The project also will include water-wise landscaping along Euclid Street and La Habra Boulevard. The total projected cost for all of the improvements is approximately three million dollars. COMMENTARY

Changes are coming and they're inevitable Walt Disney once said, “Times and conditions change so rapidly that we must keep our aim constantly focused on the future.” This is true for many aspects of life and society. This has always been my mindset. I am developing the drone lab program at Fullerton College, along with helping to create a new virtual reality storytelling program at the campus. This will help train future storytellers as they develop the ways in which people will want to consume news. We are changing to a paperless world. We have changed the way in which we get our information. We want it fast and direct. Whether it’s on our phones or on our computers, through social media or through websites. We like to get our information when we want it. That’s a trend that will continue to grow as technology advances and the younger tech-friendly audience grows older. These are some of the main reasons why the La Habra Journal will stop printing the actual newspaper at the end of the year and publish online only. Yes, I said online. The next issue will be the final print issue of the LH Journal. It has been an interesting bit of irony. I’ve been teaching journalism students about the importance of embracing the technology and following audiences to where they are and where they want the news. However, I’d go back to emphasize the print newspaper with the La Habra Journal. That was a challenge and something I knew that would eventually change. More and more of our readers are asking for the LH Journal stories online. I’ve seen people photographing the print newspaper article and sharing it on social media. The demand for having the content online was becoming greater. I admit I have been slow in putting content online. However, a large part of that has been due to the fact that I have been focused on managing the print issue (articles, layout, photos, ads, etc.) in addition to my full-time career and family. It has been taxing to say the least. Moving to online only will allow for content to be published faster, a lot more photos to be published and even continuing with our videos. Further, it will allow me to expand some of the articles. There are some articles that I had to cut down because of the allowable printed space in the newspaper. Now, I know there are some reading this and are not happy. Believe me, I understand. My thesis in grad school was on a history of student and

community newspapers in California. I do get it. I do understand. But when you truly ask yourself how and where you get your news and information, you will see that it comes more online. The nostalgia factor in keeping with the past is nice, but technology is moving and so are business models. In the business aspect, the cost to physically print is going up again. This is due in part to people getting their information online and printers having to make up the loss of revenue. That increased cost placed on a business of a free newspaper is a strain. So, the timing of the move from a business standpoint is great. Further, as I mentioned before, in my full-time job I am working on developing two new course programs in addition to my regular teaching duties. I am also the chairman of the department. So, the workload is substantially increasing. So, the move to online from a workload standpoint is great. This is closely coupled with having time to spend with my family. Letting go of the print production cycle alleviates a time burden and stress level to where I’ll be able to continue to spend more time with them. So, from a family and time management standpoint, the move is great. So, what does that mean as far as coverage? It means that I’m free to cover things as I have been as well as continue with interns from various local schools, and I can post articles, photos and videos regularly. So, from a content standpoint, not too much will change. The medium in which it is being delivered is the only thing that is changing. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always thought the La Habra community was special. That why we took over the Journal five and a half years ago. Continuing with the LH Journal in the new format will allow for the information about this community to still happen. —The Editor

Names of families who would most benefit from the program are provided by the school districts that serve the City, as well as by the City’s own Child Development Department programs. On December 16th, families will come to the Community Center to receive their gifts, enjoy a visit with Santa, and other fun family activities. You can support this very special program by donating non-perishable food items and toys, or by donating gift cards from Target or Walmart (these will be used to purchase items for older children) or from grocery stores. Items can be dropped off at the Community Center, 101 W. La Habra Blvd., Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. You can also sponsor a family; if you are interested in doing this, or if you have any questions about Operation Santa, please call Josie Anderson at 562-383-4217 or email her at janderson@lahabraca.gov.

Tips for a Safe & Energy Efficient Holiday Season The 10 Minute Holiday Light Safety Test

Christmas Tree Pickup & Holiday Trash Collection The City’s waste hauler, CR&R, will collect and recycle Christmas trees for the first three weeks following Christmas on your regular collection day. Trees taller than six feet must be cut in half. Please remove all decorations including tinsel, lights, ornaments, and tree stands. Place the tree at the curb. Flocked trees will be collected, but cannot be recycled. Trees disposed of after the three-week period must be cut into small pieces and recycled as regular green waste during the regular pick up. Since Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on a Monday, trash collection and street sweeping services will be delayed by one day, each day, for the remainder of the week. Parking enforcement for street sweeping will be delayed for those two weeks and will continue gain on a normal schedule starting January 8, 2018. The City will suspend enforcement of the overnight parking ordinance during the holiday season. Enforcement of the parking ordinance will not occur from Monday, November 20, 2017, 12:00 a.m. through Monday, January 1, 2018. Enforcement will resume Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at 12:00 a.m. For overnight parking or other ticketing questions, please contact the La Habra Police Department at 562-383-4300.

The City of La Habra encourages you to take a few minutes to check lights and decorations for your family’s safety this holiday season. To do so, examine holiday lights, cords, power strips, and outlets with the following questions in mind: * Are all electrical cords and light strands in good condition? If not, dispose of them at your local electronic waste drop off. To reduce punctures and tears in cords, hang them with zip ties instead of nails or staples. * Are your outlets, extension cords or surge protectors overloaded? As a rule of thumb, do not load your household circuit over 80%. This means that a 15-amp household can safely handle 12 amps. * Are all lights and cords approved by UL? Underwriters Laboratories is an independent, nonprofit organization that tests electrical equipment for potential hazards. The UL mark will be indicated on products that have been tested and verified for safety. * Can lights be easily shut off before leaving home? Leaving lights on can present an unnecessary fire hazard.

Spooktacular

Purchasing New Holiday Lights? Consider ENERGY STAR Certified LEDs! LED light strands use 75% less energy than conventional incandescent lights and last up to ten times longer! They also remain cool to the touch and reduce fire risk.

Leaving town for the holidays? If you have a gas water heater, turn it to the “Pilot” or vacation setting when you are out of town. If you have an electric water heater, shut off the circuit breaker. This tip will prevent wasted money through energy loss. An El Cerrito Elementary second grader helped Governor Jerry Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown light the Capitol Christmas Tree on December 7 in Sacramento. Sofia Garcia, 7, and her classmates created a holiday card and she presented it to the Governor and First Lady. Garcia and her mother, Elia, met with elected officials and toured the Capitol before the lighting. Sofia was born prematurely at 29 weeks; was diagnosed with Autism at two years of age. She began receiving services through the Early Start program. Sofia has been chosen to represent the 300,000 individuals with developmental disabilities served by the

This installment of Inspirational Corner is really intended for the oldest segment of our population. It’s intended for those people who may even remember the days of party line telephone service and straight cords on home telephones. If you’re asking what is either of those items, then you’re not old enough to be included in this writing. You remember the days when a telephone rang and you’d answer it as quickly as possible. If it was a party line, you might begin the call by asking other people to hang up and usually they would. It was not uncommon for the connection to be poor. Often, because it might have usually been poor, you would speak louder or slower, or both, to be able to make it through the call and understand each other. From the time you picked up the receiver, there was a protocol that was learned early on and followed with each call. A part of that protocol has continued into today and it has become a serious problem. When you receive a call today, whether on Estate a home phone Unparelleled Real Services... from our Family to You land-line or a cell phone, you begin speaking with the traditional Pam Kennedy (562) 547-4489 “hello” and the person responds. In fact, they are expecting to hear you say it. It’s what they’re listening to hear. These days, when people pick up the phone to respond it goes like this; “Hello…hello…hello”. Remember, you only need to say hello one time. The person is prepared to hear it. The technology is such that even with a socalled poor connection, your “hello” will be heard and responded to. If you have to say hello more than once, it’s not a friend or family member, it’s a solicitation or an outright scam. Hang up! La Habra's Anderson preps for retirement By Jane Williams La Habra Journal

This past fall Josie Anderson was told she needed surgery to remove a small growth in her brain. The surgeon would be going in through her eye to get to it. Much to everyone’s relief the surgery was a success and after several days Josie was sent home to begin rehabilitation and recovery. The six weeks she was forced to take off, gave her plenty of time to think. All that time allowed her to consider how blessed she was, and to contemplate what she wanted to do with the time God had given her. Obviously she was obliged to use it wisely. After dedicating much of her life to the City of La Habra, Anderson will retire this month. A year ago, prior to being aware of any health problem, she and her partner, Bob bought land in Arizona and planned on building their dream home. Currently, Anderson supervises a fair number of the services that the La Habra Community Center offers, such as the senior lunch program, Meals on Wheels, Bingo and the city's graffiti removal program. Anderson replaced Kaye Jacklin at the city in 1999. The job was different then, and Anderson has worked to change and evolve the position she is currently in. Prior to joining the city Anderson worked 25 years for Bank of America, as an office manager for Corn Festival Parade Chairperson and realtor Kathy Felix, and as a secretary to the La Habra Boys and Girls Clubs’ director. Those are just some basic facts about

Anderson, but her connection to La Habra, and in fact her life thus far, is much more entwined with the city's history than that indicates. Anderson bears her mother’s, name Josefina. Her father was Juan Luna. He and his two brothers contracted with La Habra Citrus Association and were responsible for providing work crews needed in the citrus groves. They had four children Raul, Josie, Ramiro, and Georgina. Raul once said “La Habra evolved. It’s a town with family values. It will always be my hometown. It has had a lot of influence on others where we grew up.” The Luna kids grew up in what was known as the Red Camp, which included 4th and 5th Streets, and was also owned by the Citrus Association. “We lived by the showers," Anderson explained. "Each camp had a restaurant, the Red Camp had two stores owned by the Gomez brothers and well known for delicious fruit flavored ices in hot weather.” When work in the groves became less available Juan went to work for Rose Hills. He also started his own gardening service, and Josie went with him to trim the grass edges with shears so they could get home in time for dinner. Each of the Camps at that time were virtually their own towns. “The Red Camp,” Raul said, “made me who I am today. That is where friends and family mentored me.” It was one of Raul's good friends, Steve Anderson that Josie eventually married. They have two sons Chris and Eric. Both became policemen. Steve ran for the La Habra City Council because he wanted to improve facilities

for kids and make sure the streets and water and sewer system were done correctly. He served as head of the O.C. Sanitation District for several years and led the charge to recycle water and filter it by putting it through a 3-step filtration system. However, his sudden death on January16, 2008 stunned everyone. A graduate of La Habra High School, Josie has always been a hard worker. She learned it from her mother who, at 80, was still calling both her daughters asking where their laundry was. It made her mother feel useful to know she was helping them. Josie originally applied for the Community Services job because her father was older and she enjoyed being with him. “Working with the seniors is a full-time job,” she said. "They have problems and need help figuring out the best solution.” She is also responsible for tracking juvenile diversion, and scheduling events and parties at the Community Center—making sure those who rent the center have the proper insurance and liquor license, and that the Community Center is properly set up for an event. She has been known to go home to collect table cloths, vases and candle holders and make sure the room looks as inviting as her home would be. She also has thrown parties for nonprofits at her house, cooking the entire dinner. Josie is in charge of the maintenance of the Community Center. She views it as a civic responsibility. “We owe it to the taxpayers to take care of their investment,” she explained. She also helps to find accommodations for those in need. Her favorite is where people who are temporarily

in need go to her to find resources to tide them over. For any service people are looking for, they can inquire at the Community Center and Josie or someone else there will help them. On Saturday December 16, One of the largest events Josie started will happen. Operation Santa takes place at the Community Center. La Habra Schools have sent in the names of families who may need help in having a Merry Christmas. For several years the Lions Club has held a car show where toys for kids are required as part to the entry fee. These toys go to Operation Santa. Josie also gives 30 names to the annual Sonora food drive. One year when this writer was still doing the La Habra Journal 90631, I asked Josie if there was a family I could talk to. She found a mother with two young boys willing to be interviewed. Josie asked the first young boy what he wanted for Christmas. He told her a bike. Then she asked the younger one what he wanted and he answered, “A Christmas tree with lights like everyone else has.” Josie asked, “If I get you a tree, what toy or gift do you want for yourself?” He was adamant, “A Christmas tree like everyone else has.” Josie was so impressed that a tree complete with lights was waiting for him and so were gifts. It was obvious what the boy treasured was the tree he had gotten for his whole family. It's stories like these and knowing that she was able to help in some way is what fueled Josie to continue. But now it's time to move on to the next chapter and see what future adventures await. Anderson's energy and dedication to helping those in the community will be hard to replace, but she has inspired those she works with to do the best for others and continue to truly make La Habra a caring community.

Wind Wolves: Washington Middle School's next team of environmental warriors look to tackle the subject of renewable energy. The Wind Wolves will be working to develop new ways of conservation.

Seven students from Washington Middle School are looking to help stop global warming. The team, known as the WMS Wind Wolves, has been given the green light from the district superintendent, the school's principal and the city's mayor to pursue renewable energy at the school. The students, Cyana Arce, Janelle Martinez, Jessica Emerson, Emmanuel Ruiz, Tannya Gallegos, Kendra Wise and Yuko Jackson have met in the morning before school, on breaks and during lunch, to research and plan their strategy. They created public service announcements to make the students and community aware of how easy it is to save energy and use less fossil fuels. The team recently finished several interviews with special experts: Envi-

ronmentalist and actor Ed Begley, Jr, Raptor Specialist Maria Britton, and mechanical engineer Christian Ruiz. The team researched that using reusable mugs instead of paper or styrene cups can save many pounds of carbon dioxide per day. To that end, the team gave the WMS faculty a gift of a hand-made mug rack with many fun and interesting mugs to encourage the use of reusable drinking containers. The team is not stopping. They are now looking to present to a local company that specializes in renewable energy to hopefully make a connection that can assist the school with obtaining renewable solar/wind energy. People filled the parking lot next to Banc of California and the Regal Theater to look at cars, enjoy live music and have a visit from Santa last Saturday. The reason was the La Habra Host Lions' seventh annual Santa Cause Charity Car Show. The Lions raised money to help fund various community projects.

Playing it forward: Amaro aims to help LH youth find their beat By Jason Burch La Habra Journal

As he recalled his journey from growing up playing the drums with his dad, to touring the world with his talent behind the drum kit, and now realizing his dream of opening up a first of its kind drum school for kids, Bobby Amaro couldn’t hide his emotions. His sleeveless drummer t-shirt revealing goosebumps down his arms. “To seriously be at this point, where it started jamming with my dad, getting in his band and experiencing the whole thing, just to continue that feeling of being free, to this day 25 years later it’s actually giving me the chills right now,” Amaro said pointing to his forearm. Just five days earlier, Amaro was joined by La Habra council member Rose Espinoza and many people from around the community, to officially cut the ribbon at the grand opening for his new drum school, Kidz Rock. Espinoza said that Kidz Rock will cultivate creativity in La Habra’s youth. “I just got goosebumps on my arms and thought, this is finally going to be something that comes to fruition for the City of La Habra,” Espinoza said at the grand opening. Amaro has been a La Habra resident for 13 years, and has been teaching drum lessons privately for the same exact amount of time. He used to go to the local community centers and offer free lessons to anybody interested. Then in between

touring and recording with several bands, he would teach private lessons remotely or in his garage-turned-studio. “Growing up, we never had cars parked in our garage,” Amaro said. No, it was always filled with instruments. His dad Robert is also a musician. He introduced him to drums at six years old and has been encouraging him ever since. To Amaro, Kidz Rock is the natural progression of his lifetime playing and years teaching. His goal is to inspire the next generation of artists and help them become better and go even further than him. Amaro knows how drumming changed his life. Growing up in Pico Rivera, his passion for drumming gave him something productive and rewarding to focus on, while others in the neighborhood were getting into trouble. “I would take my dad’s lawnmower out Saturday mornings really early and go door to door on my block in Pico Rivera, I’d say, ‘Hi, I’m trying to buy a new drum kit, do you need your lawn cut?" “My drum kit was my partner, it was my sidekick, that’s what kept me off the streets,” he said. “I grew up with a lot of gangsters in my neighborhood, the funny thing was they all respected that I was the rocker kid on the block, ‘don’t knock on the garage door for Bob, he’s not gonna come.” Along with instilling those life

lessons in his students, Amaro also brings real world experience and cutting edge technology with Kidz Rock. He’s toured around the world and recorded albums with popular rock bands like Orgy and Filter. Now with two kids, Amaro believes this is the perfect time to settle down and realize his dream of opening his first school, which has always been at the forefront of his mind. The school will feature all electronic drum-kits, which he says allows the students to explore different sounds at their fingertips. “You should see their faces,” Amaro said. “They just light up when they start learning how to use these kits.” Each private room is also equipped with a camera, which will be live-streaming all sessions. Amaro thought it would be great for parents to be able to drop their child off and be able to go make dinner or run errands, without missing a beat. The videos will

also be used as tool for students to go back and watch later. Kidz Rock is located on Whittier Blvd. directly across the street from the athletic fields at La Habra High School. Official classes will begin January 2nd, but until then they will have an open lab environment, while he continues to teach his one-on-one lessons. He said that everyone is encouraged to come in and tryout the new equipment. “I built this place for kids to have that feeling that nothing else matters at that moment,” Amaro added. “Hopefully we’ll get a lot better people to come out of the world just by this experience.”

Lady Raiders off Heralds hoops take to strong start Perris in tourney

By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

The Sonora Lady Raiders basketball team is starting off strong. A dominating 56-20 win on the road against Arroyo Monday night marks Sonora's sixth win, with four victories with a 30-point margin. However, Head Coach Melissa Barajas said that the defense is a "work in progress." She added that the team's rebounding is better than expected, which is helping in their overall production. “Our team is led by our All-County Senior Guard Lainie James and all-league Junior Guard Elizabeth

Yoshitake," Barajas said. "Their leadership and experience is helping to guide our team as we have many players with new roles including five freshmen." With so much youth on the team Barajas said that "every game brings new learning experiences which we are using to build upon to prepare us for the intensity of league play. " James was named MVP of the Bonita Tournament earlier this season. Yoshitake and freshmen point guard Alyssa Ke were named to the All-Tournament team. Sonora's next game is Friday against La Canada at 7:30 p.m. It's part of the Arroyo Tournament.

Senior Jakob Williams finished with 16, and seniors Quinn Commans and Erik Sheets both finished with 13. The Heralds will host Tahquitz High School Friday before traveling down the road to face La Habra Thursday, December 21. at 7:30 p.m.

Happy Holidays! D

ear Neighbor, I’m Ray Fernandez and my wife Krista and I own a home in La Habra. We have 3 kids, Reagan, Grayson and Logan, plus a dog named Getzy. We love our fun & safe, family neighborhood with its great schools. You may spot a “Ray Fernandez” open house or see me around the neighborhood, and I’d love for you to say hello. As a long-time La Habra resident, I care deeply about the value of homes around us. Simply put, what matters to you, matters to me! I’ve seen many homes with poor market exposure sell for less than they are worth. I feel strongly that I can help this situation. So, if you’re considering selling your home I would encourage you to call me to discuss your real estate needs! — From our family to yours, Ray Fernandez.
