board of directors DJ LaVarre LAHC HOCKEY DIRECTOR

Dear Loyola Academy Hockey Supporter, Thank you for sharing your Thanksgiving weekend with the Loyola Academy Hockey Club (LAHC). Every hockey season is filled with anticipation and excitement. This season is no different! The LAHC is proud to field three teams: Gold, JV and Girls. Over a seven month season, these three teams will compete in nearly 150 hockey games while practicing 3 times per week. They travel around Chicagoland, as well as across the United States and Canada, representing Loyola Academy. The commitment that our players demonstrate to their teams, the community and Loyola Academy is remarkable.

This Ad Book is an integral part of our hockey club’s financial foundation. It not only helps fund the hockey club, it allows us to share some of the excitement and commitment I referenced above. As you read through the book, get to know some of these local businesses and please consider patronizing all of the advertisers that support Loyola Academy Hockey. The sponsors in this Ad Book are valued partners of the LAHC and we recognize and appreciate their support. I would also ask that you visit our website <www.loyolahockey.com> and support the advertisers that use our site to promote their businesses. The website is a great way to get updates on your favorite Loyola Academy hockey team. The website also has many useful tools which allow family, friends and Alumni to follow Loyola Academy hockey. We encourage you to check our online schedule and come out to watch our teams compete this season. We are grateful for the leadership, guidance, and cooperation we receive from Loyola Academy. Thank you to Rev. Patrick E. McGrath, SJ, President, our school Principal, Charlie Heintz, Father Peter Breslin, Melissa Krein (Boys Moderator) and Doug Gleber (Girls Moderator), the Loyola Academy Administration and the entire faculty. Individually and collectively they align the spirit of the Loyola Academy Hockey Club with the mission the Academy instills in its student athletes – to form women and men for meaningful lives of leadership and service in imitation of Jesus Christ through a college preparatory education in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition. Last but not least, I want to personally thank Dan Liebers, Brian Callahan and John Albrighton. They invested a lot of time and energy to make this year’s Thanksgiving tournament and the corresponding Ad Book tremendous successes. Let me hasten to add, Dan and Brian no longer have kids skating for Loyola, and yet they continue to give back to our hockey family. If you see them at the rink, please take a moment and simply say “thank you”.

Thank you again for your support and I hope to see you at the rink. Go Ramblers! Michael J. Purcell President, Loyola Academy Hockey Club 4

Matthew Beck Abigail O’Brien Matthew Parma Alexa Grant

To keep his memory alive, the Loyola Hockey Club created a scholarship fund in his name. The award comes with $1,500 that will be applied to the recipient’s college freshman year tuition. Thanks to everyone who helped to make this scholarship possible. We are thrilled to have created such a fitting legacy for Kyle, and we are looking forward to many more award recipients in the coming years!

The inaugural Kyle Shellberg Scholarship Award was presented to Matthew Beck, class of '16 and Varsity Gold team member. Kyle’s parents were at the banquet and got to meet Matt before the award presentation.

player of the year

I was humbled and honored to receive the JJ O’Connor Award. O’Connor represents our Rambler spirit at its finest. Tradition never graduates nor will the example and courage shown by JJ O’Connor. It was truly an honor. Eamon O’Brien was introduced to hockey by his father, Tim O’Brien (Class of 1984). Eamon is one of four siblings to skate for the Ramblers. His sister, Abigail (Class of 2017), won a state title in 2016. Tim, an enthusiastic supporter of the program, died Jan. 13, 2019.

12

A three-year veteran on the Gold team, Eamon was named the Amateur Hockey Association Illinois’ JJ O’Connor Male High School Player of the Year. He’s the first Rambler to earn the honor since 2014 when Cal Callahan (Class of 2014) earned it.

L O Y O L A A C A D E M Y H O C K E Y – T R A D I T I O N N E V E R G R A D U AT E S

JJ started a youth and adult sled hockey team, bringing disabled kids into the game of ice hockey by playing on specially made sleds. When JJ O'Connor was a senior in high school at Loyola Academy in Wilmette IL in October of 1995, he was injured playing in his first hockey game of the season. After the injury, JJ was diagnosed as an incomplete quadriplegic, meaning he is paralyzed from the neck down. He received the Chicago Blackhawks Alumni Scholarship award in 1997 along with a full scholarship to Lake Forest College and graduated Cum Laude with a major in business and a minor in communications. JJ gave the commencement address before three thousand people, which was aired on Good Morning America. Since his graduation from Lake Forest, JJ has done public speaking and has spoken to numerous business, civic, educational and sports groups. He has traveled across the United States and to several countries including Canada, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Mexico spreading his message of overcoming obstacles and achieving one’s goals. JJ’s entrepreneurial spirit includes being the webmaster for the Amateur Hockey Association Illinois, Inc., owner of 11 Sport Clips hair cutting salons and co-owner of Trifecta Construction Company. JJ is the chair of the Disabled Hockey Section for USA Hockey nationwide (Special Hockey, Sled Hockey, Amputee Hockey, Blind, Warrior and Hearing Impaired Hockey). In addition, JJ also started youth and adult sled hockey team in Illinois called the Hornets, bringing disabled kids into the game of ice hockey by playing on specially made sleds. He also recently started the Blackhawks Warriors, a hockey team comprised of injured veterans. JJ was the General Manager of the 2010 USA National Sled Hockey Team which won the gold medal in Vancouver, Canada and was the parent liaison for the 2014 and 2018 USA National Sled Hockey Teams which won gold medals in Sochi, Russia and Pyeong Chang. The award for the top Illinois High School male hockey player is given annually to a high school player who exemplifies JJ’s spirit of being a leader both on and off the ice, never giving up and achieving one’s goals by focusing on the important things in life. Congratulations go out to Eamon O’Brien for being the recipient of the 2019 JJ O’Connor Male High School Player of the Year. It is an honor he well deserves. JJ is always looking for additional players or donations for Disabled Hockey. He can be reached at dublj95@aol.com.

It was a tremendous privilege to be part of the Loyola hockey organization. I met some of my closest friends through Loyola hockey and learned many life lessons along he way. Receiving the JJ O’Connor award was an honor, but it never would have happened without the support from my parents, coaches, and teammates. See you around the rink at the tournament. – Brian “Cal” Callahan

If you need help, say this prayer to the Blessed Virgin for 3 consecutive days. It has never been known to fail. Publication on granting of the favour must be promised and done.

Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God; Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity. (Mention your request here)

There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3 times)

Holy Mary, I place this prayer in your hands. (3 times)

Amen.
