Although the athletes are members of opposing teams, they are friendly rivals. Their participation in the games reflects the essence of interscholastic athletics – to play hard but fair.

We encourage you, as fans and spectators, to demonstrate good sportsmanship and cooperation to ensure continued success this year and in years ahead.

Please support the advertisers in this program. Without their help, these programs would not be possible. Thank you for your support of all Loyola Academy sports programs.

Jeff Bottcher MEMBER AT-LARGE

The Loyola Academy Hockey Club (LAHC) has a long tradition of excellence, both on and off the ice, thanks to the tireless efforts of the coaches, parents, volunteers, board members, Loyola Academy staff members and alumni that have served our club for nearly six decades and continue to do so today. Most importantly, we are grateful to our student-athletes, who represent our school and club with great dedication and competitive spirit.

I’d like to give particular recognition to our Hockey Director DJ Lavarre who, in his 34th year at LAHC, has been at the forefront of establishing and maintaining the culture of excellence that we so cherish. In no small part due to that culture, and thanks to strong student participation, this year, LAHC fields five teams (comprised of 109 players) for only the third time in its 58 year history.

We are thrilled to host the 53rd Annual O’Grady Thanksgiving Tournament, to our knowledge, the biggest and longest-running high school hockey tournament in the State of Illinois. The competition once again promises to be outstanding across three divisions of play and 40 teams. Special thanks to Dave Jones, our Tournament Director, for his fine work in overseeing this event for the third consecutive year.

This Yearbook and Program serves

as the club’s primary fundraising vehicle and we are ever-grateful to the sponsors that support our players and their families by helping to offset the costs of playing hockey. High school hockey is a club sport that is not governed by IHSA and, accordingly, entirely privately funded. As you review this book, please take a moment to get to know our gracious sponsors, and please consider patronizing their businesses as we’d like to return their generosity in kind. I’d also like to thank Peter Schoonyoung and Dick Thomas, along with our long-time design partner Peter Birren, for their tremendous effort in publishing this book.

Lastly, it’s important to underscore the mission of Loyola Academy, which also serves as the foundation of LAHC: “To form women and men for meaningful lives of leadership and service in imitation of Jesus Christ through a college preparatory education in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition. ”

It’s a great privilege to serve as the President of Loyola Academy Hockey Club and to be able to thank you for your support. Enjoy the tournament, have a safe and happy holiday season, and thank you for spending part of your Thanksgiving holiday with us.

Go Ramblers!

Sincerely,

During the many years of the Loyola Academy Thanksgiving Hockey Tournaments, we have benefited greatly from the favors of our business advertisers. Let’s return the favor and purposely patronize their businesses.

Kyle Adam Shellberg was a two-time state champion with Loyola Gold, a model teammate and standout student-athlete. He unexpectedly died in 2010 in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

Kyle was a staff nurse at St. Joseph's Presbyterian Hospital of Denver. He was an amazing and unique soul with personal qualities for which most people could only wish. He was a friend to everyone and would offer all to any person in need.

To keep his memory alive, the Loyola Hockey Club created a scholarship fund in his name. The award comes with $1,500 that will be applied to the recipient’s college freshman year tuition.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make this scholarship possible. We are thrilled to have created such a fitting legacy for Kyle, and we are looking forward to many more award recipients in the coming years!

We hope you will continue to support Loyola Academy, and the Kyle Shellberg Scholarship Award, as we’ve seen first-hand the impact your gifts make.

2023/2024 Maroon had a great Thanksgiving last year and finished with a tough loss in the O'Grady finals. They also finished the year with a run to the finals in the first ever AHL Tournament.

2024 Ridley tiger cup

During the weekend of September 20-22, Loyola Gold made their annual pilgrimage to Ridley College in Canada to compete against some very good opponents.

After playing in the Midwest Prep Hockey League from 2002-2017, Loyola Academy Gold Team was invited to join the Ridley Tiger Cup Challenge for the 2017-18 season.

The exclusive 8-team tournament hosts not only Ridley College, but perennial powerhouses like Upper Canada College, The Hill Academy and Lake Forest Academy. It is the first big test this season against some of the top prep school from the USA and Canada. The Tiger Cup is a great opportunity for our players and coaches to see where they stand as a team.

Echoing Loyola Hockey Director LaVarre’s impression of the this year’s Challenge, Le Sommet Head Coach Shawn Anderson explained his school’s participation, “Knowing our team’s strength by participating in the Ridley Tiger Cup Challenge goes a long way toward the development of our players. Despite not having the desired result, our record this season did not indicate our level of play, and a solid effort against some of the top Canadian prep school programs is much more valuable for the team’s long term objectives.”

ANDREA RENNER – Assistant Coach

My playing resume consists of boys’ hockey, AAA girls’ hockey and USA Hockey National Development Program invites to St. Cloud State and the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY.

I eventually made my way to Huntington Avenue in Boston, to play Division 1 hockey at Northeastern University from 2016-2022.

My time there resulted in a 5-year playing career and being a captain for 4 years. While there, I was part of 5 Hockey East Championships, 2 Frozen Four appearances and 1 NCAA National Runner-Up title.

Coaching Experience:

Upon college graduation, I returned home to coach the U14 AAA Windy City Storm Girls team and was also the Assistant Hockey Director of the girls program in 2022-2023. I am now the owner and head instructor of Elevate Hockey Development which runs camps, clinics, group and private sessions year-round as well as working with youth hockey organizations in the Chicagoland area.

Carla played AAA girls hockey for Chicago Mission, Team Illinois, and the Chicago Young Americans while double-rostering as captain of the Loyola Academy Girls Varsity Team. Her Junior and Senior Year of High School, she was a member of USA Hockey’s U18 National Development Program at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY. Carla went on to win two NCAA Division I National Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and received the Most Inspiring Player award along with the Badger Community Service award.

Carla has coached girls hockey at the AAA, AA, and High School levels. She coached CYA to USA Hockey Nationals and helped guide the New Trier Girls Varsity Trevians to back-to-back State Championship appearances in 2014 and 2015, winning in 2015. Carla was the Girls Director and Coach for the USA Hockey ADM Model Club, the Admirals, and the Chicago Jets Hockey Club. Carla has also coached at the collegiate level; she was the Associate Head Coach of Robert Morris University’s Women’s Ice Hockey team and the Assistant Coach of DePaul University's Men's Ice Hockey team. Carla enjoys giving back to Hockey by coaching the Chicago Blackhawks Blind Hockey Team and serving as a USA Hockey Coaching Education Program Instructor.

Carla owns Women's College Hockey Recruiting where she and her staff of 5 former NCAA DI & DIII advisors assist high school student athletes to play NCAA college hockey.
