PARTNERING - The Cohesive Supply Chain

www.laidlaw.net

Laidlaw has developed a collaborative working relationship by understanding and demonstrating the true values of a cohesive, integrated supply chain.

PARTNERING

The preconceived idea that supply chains are vertical, with communication only being allowed to flow through the respective tiers restricts the opportunity for innovation, communication and value management. The ability to be flexible in communication and manufacturing within the vertical and horizontal supply teams enables integration benefits to be realised on many levels.

By their very nature, integrated supply chains will generally be project specific and transient, drawing upon previous experiences and working relationships. The principles and practices of these successful supply chains are then carried over to future projects. The concept is not new, nor are the benefits associated to all parties, from reduced cost and risk to improved lead times and cost saving. The commitment from all parties to embrace the ethos of working as part of an integrated team is key to the success of a project or long term working relationship.

"The importance of engaging the supply chain at an early stage can never be underestimated. This is where manufacturers and contractors can liaise with the professional teams to rationalise and evaluate conceptual ideas and bring best value to the project."

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

www.laidlaw.net

Laidlaw is committed to carrying out its commercial activity in an environmentally responsible manner for the benefit of its customers, suppliers and staff. Laidlaw carries out extensive due diligence on all supply sources to ensure compliance with environmental standards and best practices. Wherever possible, Laidlaw uses suppliers that are certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) and Pan European Forest Certification (PEFC).

ENVIRONMENT

"I'm sure many companies consider environmental issues simply as something they are obliged to think about. At Laidlaw we see these kind of considerations as an opportunity to do something significant. After all, reducing our energy consumption doesn't just benefit the environment"

A conviction throughout the company to promote a culture of environmental awareness where everyone takes responsibility

Shafiq Sharif, Laidlaw Marketing Manager

The Laidlaw committment to satisfying its obligations under ISO 14001 accreditation are: • To develop environmentally friendly products which are sourced and manufactured in an environmentally sustainable manner •

To work with suppliers whose manufacturing processes have minimal negative effects on the environment, minimising emissions and the consumption of natural resources

• To support continuous investment in cleaner technology and recovering and recycling waste materials wherever possible • To observe and work within the relevant statutory requirements and demands of the environmental authorities • To provide a safe and secure work environment for all staff • Laidlaw endeavours to use manufacturers that have ISO 9001 accreditation and environmentally certified according to ISO 14001

INNOVATION

www.laidlaw.net

Laidlaw has, throughout its history, been involved in the development of many 'ground-breaking' products, holding patents and design registrations on many products including Orbis doorsets and ironmongery. But innovation can be more than just about technical and design development. An innovative approach to the supply chain can in many respects be just as valuable to our customers, helping to drive down costs whilst increasing the value of the service we provide.

INNOVATION "Research has undoubtedly proven that doorsets offer real capital cost savings as well as obvious procurement and installed benefits"

Our proactive approach to product development is based on practical solutions for real issues

Alan Baker, Managing Partner, Gleeds

Orbis Integra frame assembly

Examples of our innovative product range are evident across all our product areas •

Above, the Orbis Integra frame assembly uses a patented clamping mechanism which allows the door and frame to be installed after all wet trades have been completed and can be installed complete with ironmongery in under 15 minutes

Right, the advantages of the patented Orbis Premier backplate system are highlighted by the introduction of dual finish levers and pull handles in satin and polished stainless steel

Below right, the Laidlaw Easifix handrail and balustrade system allows infinite adaptability to any angle thus enabling any stair handrail to be produced from standard components eliminating the need for bespoke handrailing

Laidlaw introduced a 'Door Bagging' service in 1999 whereby delivery of product to site was done not as a consolidated package of like products, but instead each door within the schedule had all the ironmongery products for that door packaged as a complete set Top - Orbis Premier ironmongery in dual finish stainless steel Above - Easifix handrail adjustable angled connector

IRONMONGERY SOLUTIONS

www.laidlaw.net

With over 130 years experience in architectural ironmongery there are few companies better placed to guide specifiers through the intricacies of ironmongery scheduling. With over 100 fully qualified Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) trained ironmongers, Laidlaw has the kind of expertise no project should be without, irrespective of size. Our technical input into the team includes conformity to the most up to date legislation and standards including Doc M of Building Regulations and the latest recommendations in BS8300.

IRONMONGERY

Case Study - Regional Performance Centre for Sport England (Gateshead) A combination of Orbis Premier and Orbis Commercial door ironmongery was specified in conjunction with Orbis timber doorsets on this state-of-the-art facility. The ironmongery was supplied in a silk anodised aluminium finish to meet the architect's specific design requirements and the factory preparation of the 90 Orbis timber doors provided a perfect, hiqh quality installation.

From concept to supply, including design, scheduling, project liaison and delivery

We have one of the largest porfolios of ironmongery products available within the UK, offering specifiers the widest selection of comprehensive, integrated ranges to suit any budget or market sector. Our ranges include specialist fittings for Anti-ligature and special needs applications.

DOORSET SOLUTIONS

www.laidlaw.net

Laidlaw has a comprehensive doorset portfolio which includes high quality timber doorsets, high performance steel doorsets and the unique Orbis Integra timber door and steel frame combination. The Laidlaw doorset ranges represent a significant investment in the latest technology, employing some of the most sophisticated manufacturing facilities in Europe capable of producing 50,000 doorsets a week.

DOORSETS

Case Study - Elgar Unit, Hadley PICU (Worcester) The highly detailed interior of this existing shell has been fitted out using Orbis laminated doorsets in Bio Oak with frames, door lippings and glazing beads in American White Oak. The challenge to create a safe, therapeutic, healing atmosphere within this psychiatric wing was successfully met by the design team using Orbis doorsets in conjunction with Orbis Anti-ligature ironmongery in silk anodised aluminium.

Comprehensive doorset solutions in timber, steel and combined timber doors and steel frames Each doorset can be supplied complete with glazing and all the ironmongery required, factory prepared and installed in some cases. Orbis Timber doorsets offer a comprehensive package of high quality veneered, laminated or painted doorsets with fully integrated ironmongery. Orbis Integra doorset solutions (right) utilise the inherent beauty of timber doors with veneered, laminated or painted finishes combined with the practical advantages of quick installation and durability of the patented Orbis Integra steel frame. Our Orbis Steel doorsets are capable of high levels of security, acoustic or fire performance and are available factory finished in any RAL colour.

HANDRAIL & BALUSTRADE SOLUTIONS

www.laidlaw.net

Laidlaw handrail and balustrading systems are available in the following options: • All stainless steel • All nylon • Combination of stainless steel and nylon • Combination of stainless steel and timber In addition we are able to offer fully glazed balustrading with stainless steel, nylon or timber top rails.

HANDRAILING

Case Study - Westfield White City Shopping Centre Europe's biggest retail outlet with 300 stores on a 42 acre site incorporated a large proportion of Laidlaw doorsets, handrailing and ironmongery. The Laidlaw Structural Glass balustrading with a square section stainless steel handrail was used exclusively around all the escalator areas at the 3 storey 103,000 square foot flagship M&S store. The freestanding balustrading system created a clean looking open feel to all the central circulation areas.

From a componentised system of handrailing to fully glazed balustrading, we have a system to suit all applications

Laidlaw offers a complete handrail and balustrading service which incorporates full on-site survey, design, manufacture and installation. Our technical consultants will work with the specifier to identify the most appropriate system for each application, guiding them through the legislation and standards requirements and assisting in getting the necessary approvals. Our design team will then carry out a full site survey and make a fully detailed design of the handrail requirement for approval. We will co-ordinate the manufacture and installation of the handrail and/or balustrading minimising the amount of on-site work to keep the quality of the finished installation as high as possible.

ACCESS SOLUTIONS AND BUILDING MANAGEMENT

Controlling the access of individuals into and out of buildings can, at times, be a complex combination of many requirements specific to each application. This calls for a more collaborative approach between the client, contractor and the solution provider. At Laidlaw we are accustomed to this scenario and will build a system dedicated to providing a truly integrated solution to suit each application.

ACCESS SOLUTIONS

Case Study - The University of Nottingham Utilising state-of-the-art electronic access control equipment, this installation provides advanced security management functions. Key areas to be protected were the student accommodation and staff offices. Using a combination of 12 strategically located Salto on-line wall reader units and over 850 Mifare proximity lock sets we were able to create a Virtual Network without the prohibitive cost of a fully hard wired system. It allows the University to use the on-line readers to update the access authority of individual user cards.

A holistic approach to providing solutions for building security and access management

The access control products encompassed within our portfolio afford some of the most technologically advanced systems available on the market, including biometric authentication systems. We are able to provide solutions which are tailored to the requirements of each application. This can range from simple stand alone electronic locks to a fully integrated networked system, controlled and monitored through remote PC software as part of a complete property management software package. Whether the application requires remote monitoring, encrypted signalling, audit traceability or high user flexibility, we have the products to suit and the expertise to guide clients to the best solution.

PRODUCT INTEGRATION

www.laidlaw.net

The benefits of providing integrated packages of related products are well known but can be tempered by concerns over value for money, choice or simply anxiety over 'putting all your eggs in one basket'. At Laidlaw we believe strongly in the advantages of the principle and can show how the benefits outweigh the concerns.

INTEGRATION

Case Study - Charnwood LIFT Health & Social Care Facility A public private partnership project which utilised over 250 Orbis laminated doorsets in steamed beech with nylon ironmongery. Frames were supplied in a painted finish to match the ironmongery. Stainless steel Laidlaw handrailing and balustrading was used exclusively on the atrium balconies, stairwells and corridors while futher integration was provided with nylon handrailing to match the door ironmongery. Secure areas of the facility were fitted with Laidlaw anti-ligature ironmongery.

The advantages of a single source supply are compatibility and integration

On a simple level, the supply of doorsets with factory prepared, integrated ironmongery is fast becoming the norm as contractors realise the benefits of reduced site work leading to higher quality installations and fewer remedial operations. Taking the scenario one step further, Laidlaw is able to offer a wider scale of related products which can have additional benefits: • A single point of contact for ironmongery, doorsets, handrail & balustrading and access control • Integrated product offering where, for example, timber handrails can be co-ordinated with the door veneers • Handrail and door ironmongery available in matching coloured finishes which we can colour match on steel or painted timber doors • Integrated supply where we can arrange co-ordinated deliveries of product to site so improving workflow • Constant innovation, be it product, service or process based
