CASE STUDY - EDUCATION Project: MidKent College, Medway Campus
Project: Buile Hill High School, Salford
Architect: Nightingale Associates
Client: Salford Local Education Authority
Client: University of Greenwich (as part of the Universities at Medway)
Main Contractor: Morgan Ashurst on behalf of Hochtief PPP Solutions (UK) Ltd
Main Contractor: Kier Build
Sub Contractor: Mitie PFI
Interior Contractor: JJ Sweeney Ltd, Romford
Joinery Contractor: Nationwide Joinery Contractors Ltd., Manchester

As part of the Government’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme, funding was approved for the £50.23 million project to rebuild Buile Hill High and Harrop Fold Schools.
Sales Office Trade Counter Distribution Centre
Buile Hill High School marked a further landmark for Laidlaw’s involvement in major education projects. The £31 million mixed comprehensive school for 900 11-16 year old pupils is not due for completion until April 2010 but has already seen extensive use of the Laidlaw Handrail and Balustrade system, as well as the company’s Orbis Timber Doorsets, Orbis Commercial and Normbau ironmongery ranges.
Architectural Ironmongery Solutions Laidlaw is the leading specifier, distributor and technical service provider of architectural ironmongery to the UK construction industry. As with all its product portfolios, Laidlaw's huge range of architectural ironmongery, including the renowned Orbis brand, is designed to comply with European building standards.
With facilities for 6000 students, the campus’s three, five-storey, ‘finger’ buildings are linked by two transparent lower floor atriums with an internal floor area of around 28,500m2. Nearly 600 Laidlaw Orbis Timber Doorsets, softwood primed frames, laminate doors and Orbis Commercial Ironmongery in Silk Anodised Aluminium were fitted by carpentry and joinery specialists J J Sweeney of Romford. Laidlaw’s scheduling team produced detailed door-by-door ironmongery schedules, a full bill of materials and project-managed supply of product throughout. Special Projects Manager David Manley commented, “Delivery schedules for a project of this scale are particularly exacting. Doorset preparation at the manufacturing stage entails each being allocated its position on site, leaving the factory with its appropriate fittings. The build time for such a large project was relatively short, but by supplying doorsets ready to position in situ, installation time and risk of damage during construction is greatly reduced”.

After the conclusion of this highly successful project, we would have no reservations whatsoever about using and installing Laidlaw Orbis Doorsets on future similar schemes. From the input of their staff at order stage to the delivery of the product on site, there was a seamless quality that we were able, in turn, to afford the client.
Handrail and Balustrade Solutions Using a modular system in either stainless steel, nylon, timber or a combination of these, Laidlaw's handrail and balustrade solutions are designed to satisfy each client's specifications. Offering the complete technical service, highly trained staff are involved at every stage of each project, from site surveys and design through to supply and installation.

The quality of both the doors and ironmongery was excellent; there were very rarely, if any, issues with products sent to site. The transportation was always on time, item scheduling was always accurate and when delivery dates had to be changed or delayed the factory was very accommodating. The package of doors and ironmongery worked really well, and as a large proportion of the project involved a heavy element of repetition, the carpenters on site could install them quickly and efficiently.
Each Laidlaw sales office is supported by a centralised distribution centre at Willenhall which has the capacity to pack and despatch individual items or by doorset. Please contact your local sales office for further information.

200 Orbis Timber Doorsets were fitted, frames and architraves for which were supplied in softwood, primed for decoration on site. Doors were supplied fully painted to Slate Grey RAL 7015 and fitted with Satin Stainless Steel Orbis Commercial hardware with matching signage. Anti-panic locks were used with ‘classroom cylinders’ and contrasting door edges were provided to non selfclosing doors. A solution was also required to provide access control for double action, double spring pairs of doors.
Laminated timber doors factory prepared for Orbis Commercial door furniture
As the UK's leading specifier and supplier of architectural ironmongery, doorsets, handrail & balustrading and access control solutions, Laidlaw offers its unique service through a national network of 13 sales offices and trade counters.
Doorset Solutions Laidlaw has pioneered the Orbis Doorsets solution which is supplied complete with the door, frame, architraves and factory fitted ironmongery to maximise efficiency and minimise on-site work.
In terms of handrails and balustrades, the durable, perforated infill panels used are ideal for areas of intensive use such as schools, while nylon top rails with a 4mm thick sleeve, coloured right through, will retain their appearance throughout the 25-year PPP maintenance contract. The colour cannot be chipped, scratched off or worn away, and will not fade. The infill panels are particularly effective for stairwells in such environments as they provide a clearly visible screen and barrier while enabling light to permeate.

September 2009 saw the opening of MidKent College's new Medway Campus in Gillingham, the cost of which came to £53 million. Laidlaw Solutions was again selected to supply doors and architectural ironmongery for Nightingale Associates’ design of the U.K.’s biggest single phase education building project to date. The site, which was formerly occupied by a division of the Royal Engineers, included an underground command complex and was bounded by military defences dating from the Napoleonic Wars.
