ORBIS CLASSIC - INTRODUCTION BS EN Performance standards Many of the product types within the Orbis Classic range have been developed specifically to meet or exceed the latest European Standards. Where different grades of compliance are applicable, this will be indicated in the description against each item. More detailed information on standards and BS EN Classifications can be found on page 41 & 42. CE Marking Where CE marking is permitted, items are marked with the CE icon. The CE classification is indicated against each item where this is appropriate. Further information on CE marking and classifications can be found on page 41.
Fire Testing Fire testing is an ongoing process with Laidlaw. Many of the Orbis Classic hardware items have been included on timber fire door tests up to 2 hours and on steel fire doors up to 4 hours. The icon indicates the item has been successfully included in fire tests and the brief details of these are included in the general descriptions.
DDA, Approved Doc. M & BS 8300 The principal of ensuring buildings are accessible to able and less able people alike is manifest in Approved Document M of the Building Regulations and with further guidance in BS 8300 which contains specific dimensional information for certain items of architectural hardware. The disabled symbol is used throughout this document to identify those Orbis Classic items which conform to the requirements of Approved Document M and are therefore appropriate for use in DDA applications. Further information can be found on pages 43 to 45.
Materials & Finishes Orbis Classic products are manufactured using only the highest grade materials including Grade 316 stainless steel. The range is available in Satin Stainless Steel, Polished Stainless Steel and Silk Anodised Aluminium.

Opening and closing forces In order to show compliance with requirements for accessibility, the force needed to open the door, measured at the leading edge, from 0˚ must be less than 30N (see page 43 for further information). The size of the door, the accuracy of installation of the hardware, the presence of smoke or draught seals, the need to latch the door, the location of the door will all have a bearing on the force required to open it and as a consequence it may not be possible to provide a definitive statement as to which closers do or do not meet the opening force requirements of the regulations. For guidance purposes we have indicated in the chart opposite those closers which can in principle meet the opening force criteria for accessibility and also the closing force criteria for fire doors. Due to the principles of leverage, the door width is critical in assessing the relevant opening/closing forces. The chart indicates the minimum door leaf width that is possible to achieve the necessary opening force. The maximum leaf width may be governed by the maximum closer power in accordance with BS EN 1154.
Materials and construction The Orbis Classic Smoothline fixed power units have die cast aluminium mechanisms with die cast zinc covers and steel arms & brackets. 31 806 Smoothline adjustable mechanisms are cast iron. Finishes Smoothline closers have electrophoretic finishes with arms and brackets to match. ESS - Electrophoretic Satin Stainless (to match SS7) EPS - Electrophoretic Polished Stainless (to match PS7) ESA - Electrophoretic Silk Anodised Aluminium (to match SA7) In addition, a range of colour coated and sprayed metallic finishes complete with matching arms and brackets are available to special order.

Specification advice Fixed power closers are best suited to internal applications where traffic levels and draught or air pressure is unlikely to vary and where the door size is known. Adjustable power closers can be adjusted to suit door size and site conditions - variables that may be unknown at the time of specification. Specifying an adjustable closer can therefore help to avoid installing an under-powered or over-powered unit.

Operating Modes Fixed strength models are site selectable for either 'hold-open' or 'swing-free' operation. Hold open angle is available from 75˚ up to 105˚. The 'swing-free' facility allows the door to operate as if no closer were fitted. When the power to the closer is cut, or in the event of alarm activation, the closer is re-activated and closes the door. Materials and construction The Softline electromagnetic closers have extruded aluminium bodies with covers, arms and brackets in steel.
DDA applications Both operating modes of the electromagnetic door control facilitate access and are specifically recommended in the Building Regulations as a means of satisfying the opening force requirements.

ORBIS CLASSIC - FIRE DOOR CONTROLS Finish
Electromagnetic Door Holders Wall and floor mounted electromagnetic door holders are used in conjunction with either an overhead door closer or floor spring. When connected to the building fire/smoke detection and alarm system they will allow a fire door in a high traffic location, such as a corridor, to be held open during normal use. In an emergency situation the holder is de-activated and the door closes under the action of the door closer. The door can always be pulled manually off hold open to allow the door to close. • Fully compliant with BS EN 1155 • CE Marked • Surface or semi recessed wall mounting • Built-in test button to simulate alarm conditions • Floor mounting bracket option • Max. holding force 200 Newtons • 2 year electrical guarantee

Specification advice The hold-open device should be sited at the same level as the closing device (or as close as practical) to minimise the stress placed on the door whilst it is being held open. A skirting mounted hold-open unit used in conjunction with an overhead door closer could induce the door to twist, causing the door to fail to close fully. 86

Power for the electromagnet must not be drawn from the fire alarm system except in alarm condition. A separate power supply is designed specifically for the electromagnetic units (see below).

ORBIS CLASSIC - ELECTROMAGNETIC DOOR CLOSERS Door Closers - Electromagnetic DDA applications Both operating modes of the electromagnetic door control facilitate access and are specifically recommended in the Building Regulations as a means of satisfying the opening force requirements.
Dual function electromagnetic door with site selectable 'hold-open' or 'swing-free' operation. The units incorporate an electromagnet which is controlled by the building fire/smoke detection and alarm system. In general operation, the door can be allowed to swing free of the door closer or be held in the open position, typically in a high traffic location. On activation of the fire/smoke detection system the electromagnet will be deactivated and the door will close under normal closer power

ORBIS CLASSIC - PANIC EXIT HARDWARE Abusing the bolt
Pushbar Devices
Testing the strength of the bolt involves the equivalent of the combined strength of 4 people trying to pull the bolt away from the door.
When lives may depend on an exit device Laidlaw feel they have a responsibility to test products to exceed all current performance and safety standards, ensuring they will operate first time, every time.
An attempted break-in is simulated to test the security of the bolt, force is applied to the anti-thrust device as if the bolt were being ‘jemmied’ out of its socket.
Rigorous testing is continually being carried out on the Laidlaw range of exit hardware providing peace of mind for specifiers, distributors, installers and users.
Corrosion resistance
Repeatedly tested to operate at 50% lower than the standard requirement, ensuring that the door can be operated with minimum force, for example by small children, the elderly and people with special needs.
A test which measures how suitable the exit device is for varying environmental conditions. All Briton 376E series panic and emergency exit hardware have been tested to EN 1670 Building Corrosion Requirements and have achieved at least grade 3 (high resistance). This ensures the product will function correctly in wet, polluted and exterior environments. Note, EN 1670 test does not relate to the finish.
Two tests are undertaken. The first is to operate the door with a maximum force of 80 Newtons.
The standard EN 179 features a number of tests used in EN 1125 but has different levels of security testing.
Low operating force
The second test simulates a panic situation whereby the door is put under 1000 Newton pressure to simulate a group of people pushing against the door.
EN Classification Codes
The operating force on the device with this weight should not exceed 220 Newtons.
Category of use Class 3 = high frequency of use by public and others with little incentive to exercise care.

Abusing the crossbar The crossbar is attacked with a force equivalent to that of a 16 stone man (1000 Newtons) pulling and pushing it in all directions and standing on it, after which the bar must still operate.

Cycle tested to measure durability for everyday use. Briton 376E series products exceed the highest requirement of 200,000 cycles.

To reduce the risk of trapping fingers and/or the blocking of the panic device, any gap shall not trap a test rod of 10mm diameter at any position of the bar travel during the operation of the panic device.
Under both standards each product is classified and graded to identify the level of compliance within each category. These classifications are set out opposite.
Fire Resistance (EN 1634) Classification 1 - suitable for fire/smoke door use Classification 0 - not suitable for fire/smoke door use
Safety All panic and emergency devices have a critical safety function therefore only grade 1 is identified. Corrosion Resistance (EN 1670) Grade 3 - high resistance Grade 4 - very high resistance.

STANDARDS & BS EN CLASSIFICATIONS The standards compliance of Orbis Classic products falls into 3 categories • Performance testing to the latest European standards, including CE marking where this is appropriate • Suitability for fire & smoke doors with products successfully included on timber and steel door fire tests • Compliance with the requirements of Approved Document M of The Building Regulations and BS 8300, and thereby considered suitable for use in DDA applications BS EN Standards are the benchmark for product performance in several major product areas within architectural hardware. Each standard prescribes a set of test procedures for products which are selected at random from stock production items. The test data and product evaluation produces a multi digit classification code which runs in parallel across each product area (or as close as practically possible). The relevant BS EN standards are summarised opposite. Further details of these BS EN standards are available from The Association of Builders Hardware Manufacturers at www.abhm.org.uk
CE Marking is applicable only to those products where the BS EN Standard has been harmonised under the Construction Products Directive.
BS EN 1906 is the European standard for 'Lever handles & knob furniture' and is applicable only to items which are used to operate locks or latches. Testing and evaluation results in an 8 digit code.
Digit 1- Category of Use (Grades 1 to 4) Grade 3 is high frequency use by the public with a high chance of misuse. Digit 2 - Durability (Grade 6 or 7) Testing to 100,000 (Grade 6) or 200,000 cycles (Grade 7) Digit 3 - Door Mass (No requirement)

STANDARDS & BS EN CLASSIFICATIONS
Fire Testing Individual products are not in themselves fire tested, but are included as an integral part of a fire test carried out on a timber or steel fire door. As a consequence, the details of the test, the construction of the door, the inclusion of intumescent material etc must be considered when specifying products suitable for use on a fire door. Where Laidlaw products are indicated as suitable for fire door applications, the products have been successfully included on the test door which has achieved the stated rating. Laidlaw holds comprehensive test certification for all appropriate products and these are available on request.
BS EN 1125 & BS EN 179 Products which are designed to provide safe and effective escape from a building in an emergency situation are covered by two European standards which have clearly defined applications. BS EN 1125 is the European standard for 'Panic Exit Devices'. The primary determining factor is that a 'Panic' device must be fitted where members of the public are present and have no prior knowledge of the exit or the hardware. BS EN 179 is the standard covering 'Emergency Exit Devices'. In 'Emergency' situations it is assumed the occupants will have prior knowledge of the exit and a panic situation is unlikely to occur. Testing and evaluation to each standard results in a 9 digit code. BS EN 1125 and BS EN 179 are harmonised under the Construction Products Directive and products must therefore carry the CE mark.

DDA, APPROVED DOC. M & BS 8300 The implementation of legislation in 1996 made it a legal duty on those responsible for buildings used by the general public, and employers responsible for places of work, to ensure that the building and its facilities are accessible to disabled people. The aim of The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) is to make it a duty to avoid discrimination againsts disabled people and this duty requires that Service Providers make "reasonable" adjustments to the design of the building in order to provide this universal level of access.
The details on this page are a simple summary of the primary sources of information related to the use of hardware products in order to satisfy disabled access. The Disability Discrimination Act It is important to remember that the Disability Discrimination Act is civil rights legislation and does not set out specific requirements or guidance in the design of buildings. As such it is therefore not appropriate to attach any notion of conformity to products, such as "DDA compliant" or "Conforms to DDA requirements". The legislation came into force on 1st October 2004. Any new building or alterations to existing buildings, in order to satisfy obligations under the DDA, must comply (in England & Wales) with The Building Regulations, and in particular, the 2004 edition of Approved Document M (ADM) which became effective in May 2004. Where certain issues are not covered in ADM, further reference will be made to BS 8300. Approved Document M (ADM) The main requirements set out in ADM are, as with all parts of The Building Regulations, performance based and the guidelines set out in the document are recognised as one way of achieving the requirements. The scope of the requirements are clearly set out, requiring that provision is made for people to "a) gain access to and b) use the building and its facilities". This includes the provision of sanitary accomodation in domestic and non-domestic buildings. ADM applies not only to new building but also to alterations and extension of existing buildings. Where certain issues are not covered within ADM, further reference will be made to BS 8300.
BS 8300:2001 This standard provides guidance on good practice in the design of buildings to make them suitable for use by disabled people. The standard is often used as a supplement to ADM and includes more specific dimensional guidance, particularly regarding the sizes of door operating hardware.
ADM contains a number of very specific requirements for the following aspects related to architectural hardware specification.
BS 8300 contains the following recommendations related to architectural hardware specification.
Accessible Doors ADM recognises that negotiating entrance doors can be difficult for the general public, not just disabled people: parents with children, those carrying luggage or with pushchairs etc. It is stated within ADM that doors which are required to be self closing must require a force no greater than 20N at the leading edge in order to open them. In most practical applications "A powered door opening and closing system .... is the most satisfactory solution for most people" (ADM 2.10). Although the 20 Newtons ‘rule’ technically still exists it has been generally superceded by a two-phase criteria established within BS 8300 in 2005. This states a maximum opening force of 30N at the initial opening stage (0˚ to 30˚), reducing to 22.5N from 30˚ to 60˚ opening angle.
Accessible Doors Aside from the ‘headline’ figures of ADM, the guidance in BS 8300 points clearly to the use of powered solutions including low energy operators to achieve the level of accessibility required on external doors (including recommendations for the positioning of any manual controls.
Fire & Smoke Doors BS EN 1154 requires fire doors to be held closed by a door closer with a minimum power size 3. This requires a force in excess of 20N (see chart below) and therefore puts it into conflict with the 20N opening force requirement of ADM. In these circumstances ADM recommends the use of electromagnetic hold open or low energy door operators. For fire doors within corridors the preference is for electromagnetic hold open units. Where privacy is still a requirement, such as doors to individual rooms, an electromagnetic device which offers a 'swing free' facility is preferable.
Fire & Smoke Doors Doors to escape stairs and final exit doors are not specifically covered in ADM. In BS 8300 it is considered suitable to use a conventional door closer in these cases, as such doors are likely to be opening in the direction of escape (ie push to exit). In these situations BS 8300 recommends a maximum opening force of 30N.

Note: calculations are based on a door leaf width of 850mm.
Internal Doors For internal doors which need to be self closing for privacy or environmental reasons, they must meet the maximum opening force criteria of 20N. In these circumstances a high efficiency variable power door control is required. When set to the lowest strength (size 1) to reduce the opening force it may cause problems in latching the door, especially in locations which may be susceptible to drafts or air pressure differences. Locks with a 'soft action latch' and high quality hinges will help in making sure the door latches properly each time.
Closing & Opening forces As can be seen from the chart opposite, a door closer power size 1 with only the minimum efficiency allowed in the EN standard (50%) will not satisfy the maximum opening force to satisfy the 20N limit in ADM. Also clearly evident is the fact that a power size 3 closer (the min. allowed in satisfying the requirements for a fire door) has an opening force at the edge of the door beyond the 30N maximum allowed in the revised regulations. Only high efficiency closers will therefore meet the dual requirements for an accessible fire door.

Lever handle dimensions
Approved Document M (ADM)
BS 8300:2001
Door Opening Hardware Guidance on the specification for door hardware falls into 2 main categories
Door Opening Hardware BS 8300 is more detailed in its recommendations, prescribing dimensional parameters for locks & latches, lever and pull handle furniture.
- ability to grip and operate the hardware - ability to visually locate the hardware
19mmØ 45mm minimum 'generous length'
Lock & latch critical dimensions BS 8300
Ability to grip and operate the hardware The requirement within ADM is that "where fitted with a latch, the door opening furniture can be operated with one hand using a closed fist, e.g. a lever handle" (ADM 2.17). Whilst no specific dimensional requirements are laid down in ADM, such recommendations are covered in BS 8300.
72mm minimum
It is a requirement of ADM that external handles (ie those used to open manual external doors), should not be 'cold to the touch'. Whilst most people will find a bare metal handle unpleasant to grip in the depths of winter, for some, particularly elderly people, it can be quite painful.
hor
izo n hantal pu dle ll
min .l 600ength mm
It also requires a backset of 54mm minimum (from edge of door to the lockcase operating centre - see diagram opposite). Lever handles The principal requirements are that "where possible, door opening furnitue with a lever action should be used .... without tightly grasping it or twisting the wrist e.g by using a closed fist".It also recommends levers return to the door face at the open end to aid the grip and avoid catching clothing. Dimensional characteristics for lever handles are covered by Fig. 17 of BS 8300. See diagram opposite. Whilst lever handles are the preferred solution, there are circumstances where other issues can take precedence. The requirement to prevent self harm is one such issue where the risk associated with the lever furniture takes precedence over disabled access. Such situations will be covered by the provision of an Access Statement at the planning stage.

Locks & latches To improve physical and visual access to the lever and lock keyway, the distance from the edge of the door and between the lever and keyway should be maximised; "..the cylinder should either be above the lever handle, or the minimum distance between the handle and the keyway .. should be 72mm." (BS 8300 - 6.5.3.2)
Building Regulations in Scotland & Northern Ireland Technical Handbooks are published to guide specifiers in Scotland and Northern Ireland in much the same way as ADM but are not as detailed, offering little or no guidance in the specification of door hardware although the amended Technical Booklet (Part R) published in Northern Ireland does contain specific information related to handrailing and sanitary fittings. In most cases the Handbooks for Scotland refer specifiers to the guidance contained in BS 8300.

Recommendations also include the provision of a horizontal pull handle on doors fitted with a latch to enable wheelchair users to pull the door closed.See diagram opposite. DDA, APPROVED DOC. M & BS 8300
Approved Document M (ADM) Continued Colour contrast & light reflectance For people with impaired vision the ability to identify key objects in the environment determines their ability to live independantly. It is a requirement of ADM that "all door opening furniture (on manually operated doors) contrasts visually with the surface of the door" (ADM 2.17). "All door furniture should contrast in colour and luminance with the surface of the door ..." (BS 8300 - 6.5.1) The measure of brightness or luminance is measured by the amount of light which objects reflect (Light Reflectance Value - LRV). Whilst people with impaired vision may not be able to easily identify colour they will generally be able to identify some reflected light. The greater the difference in LRV between the door and the hardware, ie the contrast between the two, the easier the hardware will be to locate. On a basic scale of 1 - 100, where a black object which reflects very little light has a LRV of typically less than 10, the recommended contrast is 30 points of difference (although it is recognised that a value of 20 points may be adequate).
The use of backplates could contribute to increasing the visibility of the operating hardware.
Metallic finishes The suitability of metallic finishes is a complex issue due to numerous external factors which affect the percieved LRV of metallic substrates. The level and angle of incident light, the colour and nature of the door surface and the surrounding structure of walls, ceiling and floor will all have a bearing on the amount of light which each item of hardware reflects. It is therefore not possible to state which finishes are good and which are not; each must be judged in context to the surrounding environment. Recent Research The Research Group for Inclusive Environments was commissioned to undertake specific research in this area in association with the GAI (Guild of Architectural Ironmongers). A small (but nonetheless representative) group of visually impaired people tested actual ironmongery samples against various typical door finishes. Results showed that even at LRV differences of 10, over 72% of the test sample were confident of locating the hardware. It is thought that the 3D nature of the hardware, with its highlights and shadows contributes to the ease of location. Also, the nature of the hardware (gloss or matt) appeared to have no significant bearing on how easy it is to detect (see www.gai.org.uk for further information). Measurements Available to specifiers of Laidlaw products is a portable 'Spectrophotometer' which enables LRV readings to be taken of any material, for example door finishes and veneers, to compare with LRV readings of Laidlaw products. Please ask your Laidlaw Technical Consultant for more information. CPD seminars Laidlaw can provide a comprehensive series of RIBA approved CPD seminars including presentations covering DDA and Doc M issues. Subjects covered will include all aspects of colour contrast and demonstrations on the use of the 'Spectrophotometer'.
