In a workplace for example this is the employer and any other person who may have the control of any part of the premises, e.g the occupier or owner.

ORBIS STEEL DOORSETS The high levels of physical stability and durability of steel doors is a tough combination to beat....
Advantages of Steel Doorsets The demands placed on building components to provide ever higher levels of performance are ever growing. The high levels of physical stability and their inherent durability makes steel doorsets hard to beat in terms of security, vandal resistance, durability and fire resistance. But don't be fooled into thinking our steel doorsets are 'rough and ready'. Using the latest in-house powder coating facilities we are able to provide doors and frames of the highest quality, suitable for a wide range of internal and external applications.
The benefits of Orbis Steel Doorsets include:• • • • • • • •
3 www.laidlaw.net
Longer life performance and improved life cycle costs Door, frame and hardware supplied complete saving time and costs on-site Moisture resistance - will not warp or twist Inherent strength of material and construction has superior resistance to forced entry Precision engineered and requires little or no maintenance Environmentally friendly, being 100% recyclable Long term fire resistance with integrity and stability up to 2 hours Long life product provides good value for money
ORBIS STEEL DOORSETS Offering strength, durability and a range of performance characteristics to suit a wide variety of practical applications.
Fire Resistance Fire causes irreparable damage to property and lives every year. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2006 has effectively moved the fire safety responsibilities from fire authorities onto the building owners and operators. All our Orbis Steel Doorsets are fire tested to EN 1634 and Certifire Approved
Orbis Steel Doorsets form part of the Orbis product portfolio which includes Timber Doorsets, Timber Doors with Steel Frames and an extensive collection of door hardware. For further information please contact your Laidlaw Technical Consultant for a detailed information pack.
Thermal Insulation Recovering energy consumption is becoming a major consideration where energy efficient buildings call for greater levels of thermal insulation. The Orbis Thermal Steel Doorsets are designed to satisfy the higher levels of insulation stipulated with the Approved Document Parts L2A and L2B of The Building Regulations.
Acoustic Performance Controlling the transmission of sound can be a significant requirement in applications such as cinemas, hospitals, schools, airports and hotels. Even in commercial applications, relatively low levels of unwanted noise can be a drain on employee morale and productivity. Orbis Steel Doorsets offer up to 30dB sound reduction and this can be combined with a fire rating of up to 2 hours.

Vision panels in doors
Where single swing double doors with unequal leaves are used across a 1500mm wide corridor, the smaller leaf will be greater than 450mm so a vision panel will be necessary. In practice, vision panel options are determined by current fire certification.
Entrance doors Door leaves and side panels wider than 450mm have viewing panels giving a zone of visibility between 500mm and 1500mm (in one glazed panel), if necessary interrupted between 800mm and 1150mm to accommodate a horizontal rail.
Laidlaw recommends extending vision panels above the top zone of visibility (1500mm) to allow greater range of vision by ambulant people.
Internal doors The same guidance as above, but vision panels to be provided only where appropriate.

Location of ironmongery BS8300 provides this diagram in order to ensure the correct location of door furniture.
Although BS8300 gives a range of heights for lever handles and horizontal pull handles, Laidlaw recommends a spindle height of 900mm. A pull handle length of 450mm, with a top fixing position of 1400mm is also recommended.
Note: where a full width mid-rail plate or lock are required the recommended pull handle sie or position will need to be altered to avoid clashing with the plate or lock.
17 www.laidlaw.net
The 400mm height of the kicking plate provides greater resistance to damage from wheelchairs.
INSTALLATION, CARE AND MAINTENANCE Introduction Regular maintenance of the doorset and its fittings will prevent unnecessary wear and tear. Doorsets and furniture can fail or be damaged through lack of maintenance so it is important that attention is paid to the need for regular inspections, with adjustment and cleaning as necessary.
Product Guarantee
Assembly
The Orbis Steel Doorset range is covered by a 10 year guarantee on internal doorsets assuming normal wear and tear. Conditions and usage must be according to our recommendations. The guarantee does not cover willful neglect or unskilled installation or any defects which were visible before the installation of the product but not reported within seven working days of delivery.
After checking all components for damage and quantities (using parts list) select correct frame member markings for the appropriate opening reference, ensuring all components are compatible. As the frames are supplied knock down, assembly MUST be carried out adjacent to the opening Installation “The sizes described in the Orbis Steel Doorsets Range indicate the size of the structural opening required to receive the doorsets. All prepared openings should be equal in wall thickness at all points and plumb and square with tolerances of +10/-0mm in the width and +5/-0mm in the height” Frame Fixing All frame holes plugged with snap-fit nylon grommets. Plastic or steel packing shims included to suit the fitting tolerance.
Protection Packing should not be removed until the products need to be installed, remembering they are a second fix. Under no circumstances should any tape, include “low tack” be applied to the doorset surface as solvents may react with the finish and cause damage. Storage It is recommended that all doors and frames should be stacked horizontally using spacing/protection and support as for delivery pallets.
Type A – 2nd Fix to brick/blockwork via M6 expansion anchors as supplied. Type B – 2nd Fix to steelwork via Teks self drilling/self tapping fasteners as supplied Type C – 2nd Fix to studwork/timber via No.12 round head woodscrews as supplied.
Care of Ironmongery Stainless steel should be cleaned regularly using warm soapy water and dried with a soft clean cloth. Avoid acid and chloride based cleaning products and abrasive materials. External fittings will require more attention due to their greater exposure to atmospheric deposits. Hinges Orbis Steel doorsets are supplied with pre-lubricated low maintenance bearing hinges. Periodically check the hinge fixing screws for tightness. Lubricate internal doorsets with a light machine oil. On external doorsets, apply a liberal amount of petroleum jelly around each bearing point. Emergency Exit Devices Check functioning of exit devices as part of periodic fire safety test procedures. At quarterly intervals, lubricate all pivot points and shoots where guides retain them. Check all fixing screws are tight and shoots engage properly into keep plates etc. Overhead Door Closers Inspect closers for oil leakage and correct operation. The door should close without undue slamming, but firmly enough to engage latches where fitted. Adjust closing force as necessary to achieve this if the closer has the facility. Check the tightness of all fixings. Grease the lever arm pivots if necessary. Locks & Latches Inspect all locks and latches for proper operation adjusting the strike plates if necessary to ensure the smooth action of the latch bolt. A small coating of petroleum jelly should be applied to the lock snibs in coastal locations to resist corrosion. Flush Bolts Lever action flush bolts should be checked for smooth operation and damage to ensure compliance with any fire prevention requirements when fitted to fire doors. The floor socket must be kept clear of accumulated dirt and debris at all times. Lever and Pull Handle Furniture Check all lever handles for smooth operation and fixings for tightness. Ensure that all pull handle fixings are positive including grub screws on back to back applications.
