Our products rely on precision engineering, this is why we recommend that Orbis Timber Doorsets must be installed as second fix near completion of the project-reducing the risk of damage prior to handover. Caring about the community Laidlaw have a dedicated team of qualified technical consultants who can offer guidance on all relevant building regulations and legislation, including Approved Document M, BS 8300 and the Disability Discrimination Act. In particular, recommendations can be made on colour contrast, components such as high strength nylon levers that are not cold to the touch, as well as key accessibility features. For added assistance, we subscribe to NBS Plus (National Building Specification) which contains full specification clauses for all Laidlaw products. Change in Legislation “Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005� New fire safety rules affecting all non-domestic premises in England and Wales came into force on October 2006. Fire certificates will be abolished and will cease to have legal status. Responsibility for complying with the Fire Safety Order will rest with the responsible person. In a workplace, this is the employer and any other person who may have the control of any part of the premises, e.g. the occupier or owner. In all other premises, the person or people in control of the premises will be responsible. If you are the responsible person you will have to carry out a fire risk assessment which must focus on the safety in case of fire of all relevant persons. It should pay particular attention to those at special risk, such as the disabled and those with special needs, and must include consideration of any dangerous substances likely to be on the premises. Responsibility for enforcement of the new rules will be with the local fire and rescue service authority who will carry out regular inspections with top priority going to those premises presenting most risk to the community. They are able to do this within the context of the new Integrated Risk Management Planning (IRMP), part of the Government’s modernisation agenda.

Easy installation Products arrive securely wrapped for protection and are easily transportable. Installation is straightforward and fast, reducing the skill resources required at the site. Non-projecting ironmongery including lock case, hinges and flush bolts are factory fitted and the door is face drilled, ensuring correct installation of lever spindles which considerably reduces on-site work. A precise operation for Laidlaw at Queen Elizabeth Hospital The new North East Surgical Treatment Centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead was the largest health project of its kind in the area when it was commenced. Laidlaw were delighted to be awarded the contract to supply a complete internal doorset and ironmongery system for the building. This prestigious order involved the delivery of 336 Orbis Timber Doorsets comprising Steamed Beech doors with primed softwood frames, featuring a crown cut veneer to give an attractive and carefully
balanced pattern across the width of the door. The doorsets were complemented by Orbis 8 SA7 ironmongery in a Silk Anodised Aluminium finish to add to the almost futuristic look of this new venture for the Gateshead Health NHS Trust. As hygiene is such an important consideration in hospitals, our remit also included the supply of 52 postformed doors and frames for clinical areas that are subjected to heavy use by staff, patients and visitors alike.

Laidlaw perform well in new centre at Gateshead Following our highly successful supply of Orbis Timber Doorsets to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, we were chosen by AMEC Construction for another prestigious undertaking, again in the North East region at Gateshead. The English Institute of Sport has entered into a new era with the construction of a state of the art Performance Centre at Gateshead International Stadium. As well as a community sports centre and education base, this development offers sophisticated new facilities for elite athletes in the area. AMEC once more specified the Orbis brand of Timber Doorsets. The project involved the supply of 90 Orbis Timber Doorsets comprising crown cut Steamed Beech veneered doors and factory finished Steamed Beech frames. They were enhanced by a mix of Orbis 8 and
Orbis 9 SA7 ironmongery with a Silk Anodised Aluminium finish to meet the architect’s specific design requirements.There was also a need for a number of sliding doorsets with Type 13 vision panels to comply with Document M regulations requiring minimum visibility zones. It was important that the overall design echoed the cutting edge technology offered by the Centre. In addition to a gym and athletics training hall, facilities such as medical and physiotherapy consulting rooms, a physiology lab and environmental chamber needed the very best quality doorsets and door furniture. Laidlaw once again ensured a smooth and effortless installation.

A tall order for most, but when Shropshire County Council commissioned the bespoke buildings, Laidlaw made sure their involvement delivered six of the best. From Harelescott Library, Meole Brace Resource Centre and Monkmoor Centre to Ludlow Nursing Home. Helena Lane Resource Centre and Market Drayton Resource Centre, Costain Construction were confident our products were perfectly suited. Orbis Timber Doorsets selected for strength and durability In the picturesque town of Shaftesbury in Dorset, the former King Alfred’s Middle School had become a dark, dingy and tired old building. Dorset County Council decided to completely reconfigure the room layouts to make them light and airy throughout to meet the current requirements of new primary schools. The bright new look was achieved with the help of Laidlaw who were commissioned to supply 92 Orbis Timber Doorsets with softwood frames as an integral part of this major refurbishment. The doors were faced with plain colours from the Formica PSM door collection range, with factory finished hardwood lippings on all edges. Type 14 vision panels were fitted to meet Document M zone visibility standards, and clear glass
panels were factory fitted to all fire doors. Nylon architectural ironmongery was specified for the finishing touches, with high strength polymide coatings to ensure that levers remain durable in such heavy usage areas. Even the school caretaker has good things to say about the Orbis Timber Doorsets system. Not only are the doors extremely robust, offering good sound reduction, but they are also very easy to clean and simple to maintain – making his job a lot easier!

This is achieved by taking successive leaves of veneer and reversing each alternative leaf so as to bring corresponding opposite edges together in a mirrored effect. Crown Cut The log is sliced along its length, resulting in a figured appearance. This generally produces a veneer with a central area of strong figurative grain.

LRV is the total quantity of visible light reflected by a surface at all wavelengths and directions when illuminated by a light source. Visual contrast is the perception of a difference between one element of a building and another by reference to their light reflectance values. Differences in LRV should be used to assess the degree of visual contrast between surfaces such as floors, walls doors and ceilings between key fittings/fixtures and surrounding surfaces. The LRV scale runs from 0, which is a perfectly absorbing surface that could be assumed to be totally black, up to 100, which is a perfectly reflective surface that could be considered to be the perfect white. Because of practical influences in any application, black is always greater than 0 and white never equals 100.

Light Reflective Value (LRV)
The evidence based research available to date allows a degree of variability concerning the minimum LRV difference that is required to provide adequate visual contrast to people who are visually impaired. Whilst there is considerable confidence in recommending a difference in LRV of 30 points or more, there is also much anecdotal evidence to suggest that a difference of around 20 points may still be acceptable. Differences less than about 20 points may not give adequate contrast. Doc M Definitions Section 0.29 Contrast Visually “When used to indicate the visual perception of one element of the building, or fitting within the building, against another means that the difference in light reflectance value between the two surfaces is greater than 30 points.” Internal Doors Section 3.8 “The presence of doors, whether open or closed, should be apparent to visually impaired people through the careful choice of colour and material for the door and its surroundings. For example, when a door is open, people with impaired sight should be able to identify the door opening within the wall as well as the leading edge of the door.” Specification Advice Laidlaw through the use of their own Spectrophotometer can advise on the LRV values between the ironmongery and door facings including paint, veneer and laminate and the Hardwood door edges.

Specification Advice Following recent tests under BSEN 1634-1:2000, where proposed handles require bolt through fixings, they should include 1mm thick intumescent material to the fixing hole (wrapping the bolt/bar) for 30 minute doorset constructions. For 60 minute doorset constructions, this should be increased to 2mm thick intumescent.

ORBIS ANTI-LIGATURE TIMBER DOORSETS Building Regulations Bedroom doors are one of the most important areas, needing both security and a degree of privacy. The complexity of this doorset is increased with the added requirement of fire resistance and closing devices. Products that are designed for security are not necessarily designed to perform in a fire and care must be taken to ensure that the current fire test evidence exists. Glazing material and specialist viewing panels may be designed to be impact or scratch resistant, but do they have the relevant compliance with fire certification within the doorset? A major consideration with all the design configurations is to overcome a barricade situation and as a result of considerable testing and the supply of products to a number of projects Laidlaw can offer the following options.

OPENING AND CLOSING FORCES Approved Document M-Access to and use of Buildings (2004 edition) Doc M 2.13 a. “where required to be self closing, a power operated door opening and closing system is used when through calculation and experience it appears that it will not be possible otherwise for a person to open the door using a force no greater than 20N at the leading edge.” BS8300 Design of Buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people - Code of Practice BS8300:2001 “closing devices fitted to a single swing entrance doors should conform to the requirements of BS EN 1154.The maximum closing force at the leading edge of a door fitted with this type of device should not exceed 20N.” Amendments to BS8300 “for disabled people to have independent access through single or double swing doors, the opening force, when measured at the leading edge of the door, should not be more than 30N from 0 degrees (the door in the closed position) to 30 degrees open, and not more than 22.5N from 30 degrees to 60 degrees of the opening cycle.” Opening Forces Many door closer manufacturers claim to have achieved the required levels, but is this really the case in all configurations? Doorsets need to meet fire/smoke and acoustic requirements and all these must have a form of sealing between the door and frame and in the case of acoustic performance between the bottom of the door and the finished floor.
Swing Free Devices In circumstances where opening resistance is too great for the user to manage, the doors can be fitted with “swing free” devices. These closers allow the door to be pushed open or closed without any spring pressure. They are connected to the fire alarm system and only resume their self-closing function in the event of a fire emergency.
The resistance of the hinges, seals and even air pressure need to be considered. Typically the forces generated by these is as follows;

In order to maintain the fire resistance of a fire resisting wall or partition with a timber door assembly the junction between the two elements should be adequately sealed. This can be achieved by pre-formed intumescent seals fitted into the back of the frame at the factory or by the application of intumescent mastic on-site. SOUND REDUCTION Building Regulations The new approved Document E came into force on 1st July 2003, with revised guidelines for rooms that will be used for residential purposes. A doorset must have a minimum sound reduction index of 29dBRw (measured in the laboratory according to BS EN ISO 140-3:1995 and rated according to BS EN ISO 717-1:1997). This means that multioccupational buildings, e.g. flats, apartments, student accommodation and hotels must meet this standard. It is also recommended that potentially noisy parts of the building, e.g. function rooms or the bar, should preferably have a lobby area, double door or high performance doorset to contain the noise. Acoustic conditions in schools Section 8 of Document E states that the normal way of satisfying requirement E4 will be to meet the values for sound insulation, reverberation time and internal ambient noise which are given in section 1 of Building Bulletin 93: The Acoustic Design of Schools produced by the Department for Education and Skills. Other buildings The specifier is concerned with eliminating or reducing noise between one area and another – the source area to the receiving area. Before a specifier can determine the choice of doorset, the following considerations should be made: •
What is the noise level in the source area?

What level should this be reduced to in the receiving area?

What is the performance of the wall separating these two areas?
•
What proportion of the wall area does the doorset occupy?
Threshold seals are essential to maintain the acoustic performance and can be achieved by either drop down seals or wiper seals with a rubber threshold. Overall acoustic performance depends on the elimination of all routes of sound penetration, therefore the gap between the back of the door frame and the wall must be well sealed – achievable by using mineral wool or mastic. Rw is the weighted sound reduction index and is a single figure value which characterises the acoustic performance of a partition or partition element, taking into account frequency (or pitch) dependency. The Rw figure is determined by comparing a reference curve to the measured sound transmission curve. The Rw figure is a measure of the relationship between these two curves. Test results shown are generally for single leaf doorsets. A small reduction in the dBRw rating can be expected for pairs compared with single doors. Astragals and rebated meeting stiles will be required to achieve sound reduction levels.

Note The practice of fitting door leaves to frames sourced elsewhere is not in itself in contravention of any relevant building regulations. However, it should be borne in mind that this may result in the non-achievement of required performance, particularly for fire/smoke resistance and sound insulation. The project architect or contractor will automatically assume responsibility for performance and statutory compliance in such circumstances. Single sourcing of doors, frames and ironmongery from Laidlaw’s Orbis Timber Doorset Range ensures total regulatory compliance and resultant peace of mind for clients, specifiers and contractors. BS476 Pt22 will be superseded by the new European Standard BS EN 1634 Pt1 which is a far more onerous test. The primary differences between BS476 Pt22 and BS EN 1634 Pt1 test standards are:
2. Pressure Regime. BS476 Pt22 requires a neutral pressure axis at 1000mm from floor level. BS EN 1634 Pt1 requires a neutral pressure axis at 500mm from floor level. Lowering the neutral axis increases the pressure by more than 35%, creating additional pressure at hinge and latch positions. 3. Cyclic Testing. There is no requirement for cyclic testing under BS476 Pt22, but BS EN 1634 Pt1 requires a minimum of 500 cycles. "Direct Field of Application" is included within the new standard so that in the test report certain changes to the assembly may be allowed subject to the test assembly exceeding the required time to failure by a given amount. A transition period will apply during which both the BS476 Pt22 and BS EN 1634 Pt1 can be used for testing. This is likely to be between 5 and 10 years.
1. Temperature control method. Furnace temperature control under BS476 Pt22 uses 1.5mm thermocouples, whereas BS EN1634 Pt1 uses plate thermocouples. Therefore to achieve the correct time/temperature curve the furnace is running between 10% and 34% hotter relative to the same test run to BS476 Pt22 in the first 10 minutes.
Regulations and Standards Relating to Doorsets A critical selection criteria in the selection of the appropriate doorset for a given application is its ability to comply with the standards in force at the time. In this section is a summary of how the key parts of these regulations relate to doorsets. The Building Regulations 2000 Document M-Access to and Use of Buildings Doc M requires that reasonable provision is made to ensure that buildings are accessible and usable. It applies to existing buildings as well as new developments, alterations, extensions and changes of use. Doc M provides guidance on achieving inclusive environments, where the overall requirements for access satisfy all users of a building, regardless of disability, age or gender. Technical Standards – Scottish Regulations Technical standards are mandatory provisions for disabled people and cover new buildings, conversions, extensions and parts of buildings that are subject to a change of use. The most relevant topics (and associated parts of the standards) are aids to communication – Part N, toilet accommodation – Part M and access and movement around buildings – Part S.

BS 8300 BS 8300 Design of Buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people – Code of Practice is now the statutory standard that provides guidance on good practice in the design of buildings so that they are convenient for use by disabled people. HTM 58 and 59 Hospital Technical Memoranda represent technical guidance to be applied in health buildings. The guidance provided by HTM 58 (doorsets) and HTM 59 (ironmongery), particularly in relation to access by disabled people, is not up-to date. It is recommended that Document M and BS8300 are followed. The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) introduces new laws and measures aimed at ending the discrimination that many disabled people face. Over time, the Act gives disabled people new rights in the areas of employment and access to goods, facilities and services. Whilst specifying in accordance with the building regulations does not, in itself, guarantee that a disabled person is not discriminated against, it does indicate that the provider has followed best practice in the building construction.

Building Regulations Approved Doc M Vision Panels in Doors Entrance doors Door leaves and side panels wider than 450mm have viewing panels giving a zone of visibility between 500mm and 1500mm (in one glazed panel), if necessary interrupted between 800 and 1150mm to accomodate a horizontal rail. Internal doors The same guidance as above, but vision panels to be provided only where appropriate.

Laidlaw comment For single leaf, single swing doors, the 800 and 825mm clear opening widths can be safely achieved using 1100mm doorsets.
Laidlaw comment The 800mm clear opening can be achieved using a 1000mm doorset, and the 750mm clear opening using the 900mm doorset.
Laidlaw comment Where single swing double doors with unequal leaves are used across a 1500mm wide corridor, the smaller leaf will be greater than 450mm, so vision panels will be necessary. In practice, vision panel options are determined by current fire certification. Laidlaw recommends extending vision panels above the top zone of visibility (1500mm) to allow greater range of vision by ambulant people.
Laidlaw comment Although BS 8300 gives a range of heights for lever handles and horizontal pull handles, Laidlaw recommends a spindle height of 900mm. A pull handle length of 450mm, with a top fixing position of 1400mm is also recommended. The 400mm height of the kicking plate provides greater resistance to damage from wheelchairs.

SITE FIXING, HANDLING AND STORAGE OF ORBIS TIMBER DOORSETS Orbis Timber Doorsets are delivered to site ready for fitting. However, in order for installation to be completed satisfactorily, it is important that certain handling, storage, finishing and installation requirements are met. For best performance and to ensure that your guarantee is not invalidated, the following guidelines must be carefully observed.
Handling and Storage Timber used in doors and doorsets is kiln dried to a low moisture content and should not be brought to site until conditions are suitable. Wet trades work should have been completed and the building dried out. All edges of the doors must be sealed, especially the top and bottom, as these areas will absorb any moisture. The ends of door jambs should also be sealed as any end grain will absorb moisture. Doorsets should be carefully stacked and stored in dry conditions where relative humidity is between 40% and 60%. Temperature extremes must be avoided and should be within the range 12°C to 21°C. Doors should be stacked level and on supports. Supports should be timber, covered with plywood or cardboard to avoid marking the door surface, minimum 100 x 50mm across the full width of the door. There should be three supports equally spaced, one across the centre and one 300mm from each end. Doors with glazed apertures should be stacked with spacers between to prevent damage to glazing beads. Veneered surfaces should be covered with plywood or cardboard to prevent exposure to sunlight which may cause differential fading, particularly where stacks include doors of different sizes.
Protection Packaging should not be removed until the products need to be installed, remembering that they are a late second fix. Under no circumstances should any tape, including “lowtack” be applied to the doorset surface as solvents may react with the finish and cause damage.
Finish The initial coat of primer or clear sealer will tend to raise the grain of the timber and will require flatting on-site with a fine abrasive before further coats are applied.
Appearance As a natural material, hardwoods used for frames, lippings and beads can vary in colour from its equivalent veneer. Occasionally, lighter colour sapwood or resin pockets may be present – this is a natural feature and not a defect.

Installation The sizes described in the Orbis Timber Doorsets Range indicate the size of the structural opening required to receive the doorsets. All prepared openings should be equal in wall thickness at all points and plumb and square with tolerances of +10/-0mm in the width and +5/-0mm in the height. Frames should NOT be built in or installed as first fixings, as they are highly susceptible to intake of moisture which will distort the frame and prevent the door from opening correctly. For masonry walls, a template should be made to the exact opening dimensions or a timber subframe installed to the correct opening dimensions.
Fixings Timber frame Timber frames must be fixed back to either timber, steel stud partitions, or masonry walls, with fixings per jamb set no greater than 150mm from corners and at centres not exceeding 600mm. Single frame head members generally to have one central fixing. Double frame members to have two fixings. Where fitted in steel stud partitions the edge of the door opening must be filled with timber (Laidlaw recommend minimum 50mm thickness) to provide stiffness and suitable fixing capacity. In the case of Fire Resisting Doorsets the frame to wall gaps must be sealed to maintain the fire resistance of the assembly. This can be achieved by following the recommendations contained in BS8214, alternatively the back of the frame can be factory fitted with an intumescent strip. Metal frames, second fix Frames to be installed with a minimum of four throughbolt-type anchors per jamb as supplied by the manufacturer. Maximum jamb fixing centres 600mm. Single frame head members generally to have one fixing only on widths over 1200mm. Double frame members to have two fixings, 300mm in from edge, on widths up to 1800mm and three fixings on widths above 1800mm. Steel packing shims included to suit a fitting tolerance of up to 5mm each side. Frame fixing holes to be plugged with snap-fit nylon grommets supplied by manufacturer.
CARE OF ORBIS TIMBER DOORSETS Veneers Veneers should be lightly washed with a diluted liquid detergent applied with a sponge or soft cloth. Minor damage should be repaired by lightly sanding, using beeswax if required and finally applying a semi-matt lacquer using a fine brush. Fully painted Factory applied paint is water-based and highly resistant to most household chemicals, grease and solvents. It is also resistant to minor abrasions. Lightly wash with a diluted liquid detergent applied with a sponge or soft cloth. Minor damage should be filled and painted with a matching BS/RAL colour satin finish paint. Laminates Lightly wash with a diluted liquid detergent applied with a sponge or soft cloth. Minor damage or scratches should be filled with a special laminate filler available from laminate manufacturers. Maintenance Regular inspection should be carried out to ensure that doors are operating correctly and not binding on floors or against the lock keep, as this will cause damage to the door. It is particularly important to check that intumescent/smoke strips are undamaged. Ironmongery Hinges - Hi-load hinges are self lubricating and require no maintenance. Overhead Closers - Ensure the door closes smoothly and firmly into the frame overcoming the latch and or seals. Where back check or delayed action functions are incorporated these should also be checked and adjusted. Similarly, with adjustable power units the valve should be adjusted to take account of the size of the door, variable air pressures and the ability of the user to operate the door. It is recommended that door stops are fitted to all non back check applications to prevent the door opening beyond the limit of the closer.
Floor Springs - Should be checked quarterly to ensure that the door closes correctly and that all fixing screws are tight. Adjustments to the controls should be carried out if the unit is not closing correctly i.e. closing speed, latching action, back check action and delayed action is fitted. It is important to check that the door has not dropped out of alignment. It is recommended that door stops are fitted to prevent undue strain on the spring mechanism. Electro Magnetic Devices - any electrical hold open device and its associated sensor or alarm should be checked once a week. Product Guarantee The Orbis Timber Doorsets Range is covered by a ten-year guarantee on internal doorsets assuming normal wear and tear. Conditions and usage must be according to our recommendations. The guarantee does not cover wilful neglect or unskilled installation or any defects which were visible before the installation of the product but not reported within seven days of delivery. Dimensional Tolerances All manufacturing processes require certain tolerances when working with natural materials that have a tendency to move with climatic conditions. Our standard is to work within the tolerances of BS4787 Part1 for internal and external wood doorsets, door leaves and frames. Item
