ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
INDIGENOUS ACCESS PROGRAMS
If your first language is not English, and you cannot verify having recently studied in an English language school system for a certain length of time, you will be required to present proof of English language proficiency. Lakehead University accepts the following recognized tests as proof of English language proficiency. Alternatively, you can choose to complete Lakehead University’s Academic English Program prior to your undergraduate studies
These programs are designed for applicants who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Metis or Intuit) and who do not meet the prerequisites for university entry.

Indigenous Nursing Entry Program (INEP)
Accepted English Language Proficiency Tests and Scores:
You may apply as a recent high school graduate, mature student or college transfer student. As a prerequisite, applicants must have passed Grade 11 U or 12 C Chemistry within the last five years.

Minimum Score: 110 (120 for Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the Two-Year Bachelor of Education)
IELTS
Minimum Score: 6.5 (no individual score less than 6.0)
PTE Academic
Minimum Score: 58 (no component score less than 50)
TOEFL (internet based iBT)
Minimum Score: 80 (no component score less than 19)
Please be advised that some academic units may require a higher score and that meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to Lakehead University.

Indigenous Transition Year Program (ITYP) You may apply as a recent high school graduate or as a mature student who has not completed high school.
Indigenous STEM Access Program (ISTEM) You may apply as a recent high school graduate or as a mature student who has not completed high school.
ACADEMIC ENGLISH PROGRAM (AEP) If you do not meet the English Language Proficiency scores, you will be automatically considered for admission through Lakehead University’s Academic English Program (AEP). You will need to successfully complete AEP before proceeding into an academic program.
FULLY ONLINE PROGRAMS CONTINUING EDUCATION AND ONLINE PROGRAMS Looking to continue your education and pursue a degree? We offer 2 fully online Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree programs. Choose between our History or General Arts majors and pursue your passion with flexible course options in Psychology, Sociology, English, Political Science and more.

CAN I START MY PROGRAM IN JANUARY? The majority of programs begin in our Fall Term (September) or Spring/ Summer Term (July/August) for college transfer agreement applicants. We do admit students for many programs into Winter Term (January) in consultation with the program chair. Course registration may be limited as a result of missing Fall Term prerequisites. CAN I STUDY PART-TIME? Yes, however some programs are more flexible than others. We encourage students to contact us directly for more information on their program availability.
