Where it All Began The birthplace of Lakeland Boating.
S
heboygan, Wisconsin is famous for its German brats, lofty waves for surfing and quaint riverfront. But a little-known fact is that Sheboygan is where the first issues of Lakeland Yachting and Motorboating (now Lakeland Boating) were created. Founder Victor “Vic” Schoen — a University of Wisconsin alum and avid boater — started “America’s Freshwater Boating Magazine” in 1946 in Sheboygan, back when an annual subscription was only $1.50 and single copies were a mere 15 cents. All of the columnists from the early days — Clovia Hitchings, Anker Hansen and Sam Seacock — were pseudonyms for Schoen himself; he wrote nearly all the copy in the original issues and sold all the ads for the first few years of publication. An early cover of Sheboygan is the home to many of our Lakeland Yachting, magazine’s “firsts”: We ran our first full-color from the January 1948 issue. advertisement in 1951; Lakeland Yachting changed to Lakeland Boating in 1957; and our popular “Scuttle” department was conceived. From 1946 until 1963, the Sheboygan office was Lakeland’s homeport. Here we are seven decades later, just a short cruise down Lake Michigan in Evanston, Illinois. We have Sheboygan to thank for helping Schoen create a legacy for our loyal readers. “We are boat owners, and I use the term loosely because our mania for boats often puts us financially and sometimes literally ‘on the rocks,’” Schoen writes in an article. “Still, in our estimation, you haven’t really lived until you’ve tangled with one of these nautical pinball machines. There are big dividends which cannot be measured in terms of money, but can only be expressed in terms of personal happiness, excitement and just plain fun that they provide.” Sheboygan is now a vibrant town with fine dining, boutique shops and abundant natural beauty. Contributor Kim Schneider has rounded up the best places to visit once there, and what makes the area so unique (p. 46). It’s a special place for us, but learn what else makes it a great port. Another man with a great history is Dave Irish, founder of Michigan’s Irish Boat Shop (p. 42). Irish sailed into Harbor Springs as a young boy and opened Irish Boat Shop in 1961. The legacy of this family-run business continues today. Contributor Howard Meyerson sat down with Irish and his family to learn the story behind one of Michigan’s most prominent boat shops. BLUE This is a photo of our dog, “Blue.” He is a blue merle border collie with one blue and one brown eye. He is 18 months old and has a love of all things water, accompanied by no fear of falling off the dinghy at any speed. Sleeping Bear Dunes Celebrates NPS Centennial
Gerald “Jerry” Nessenson, founder and president of ValvTect, announced his retirement in early June. Nessenson began marketing ValvTect in 1986; his products are now sold in more than 40 states. Nessenson is now focusing on his consulting firm of NESS Petroleum Marketer Solutions Company.

Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore isn’t going to squander a good chance to celebrate; even though Sleeping Bear itself is only 46 years old, it’s joining in on the National Park Service’s (NPS) Centennial festivities (NPS.GOV) this summer. The complete calendar is still taking shape, but centennialthemed events, workshops, concerts and outings are sprinkled throughout the year. These include the Find Your Park Concert Series held at the Platte River or D.H. Day campground amphitheaters, the two-day historical Port Oneida Fair, monthly “star parties” and a brand new, one-day Astronomy Festival. Women-led eXXpedition Sets Sail
On August 20, the all-female crews for eXXpedition Great Lakes 2016 will set sail on the first leg of their trip through the Great Lakes, Lake St. Clair and the St. Lawrence River. eXXpedition aims to shed light on the link between human health and plastic pollution in our waterways by conducting water samplings for plastics, chemicals and toxins for organizations such as the United Nations. The team is inviting the public to join them on August 20 for a day of citizen science by participating in water sampling and beach clean up. The team is also looking for women to join the lead boats or to be in charge of marina-based or landbased activities in the region. For more information, visit

Lake Michigan Rises by 4 Feet Beach-goers on Lake Michigan might have to contend with less sand and more water this summer. According to the Army Corps of Engineers, the lake has risen 4 feet since January 2013. These high tides have contributed to diminishing beaches and damage along Chicago’s lakefront walking paths. However, officials are not too worried: Water levels usually rise and fall with the seasons. Deep freezes — such as the ones the region has seen the past few winters — and slow evaporation may also eventually lead to higher water levels. In fact, in 2013 before the rise in water levels, Lake Michigan was near record lows.

Chris-Craft Unveils Commander 42 Chris-Craft is relaunching the Commander line with the all-new Commander 42, which debuted at the 2016 Chris-Craft Dealer Meeting in July. The Commander 42 was crafted through a partnership with Italian yacht builder Austin Parker. The Commander 42 is Chris-Craft’s first foray into the cabin cruiser market. The Commander 42 is a modern interpretation of a historical lobster boat line, combined with Chris-Craft’s focus on classic and timeless details and design. The model features two cockpit areas, a large bow sun bed, a cockpit galley, teak and wooden floors, as wells as twin Volvo IPS 600 D6 435-hp engines. The Commander 42 can sleep up to five people below deck. On July 2, organizers held a groundbreaking event for the Great Lakes Center for the Arts — a 500-seat auditorium that they hope will become a northern Michigan destination. The venue will be located in Bay Harbor, between Emmet and Charlevoix counties, and will start running a full calendar of events in 2018. The lead consultant for the center is Michael Kaiser, president emeritus of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Carbonation May Combat Asian Carp
The fight against Asian carp rages on: Scientists in La Crosse, Michigan, are now using carbonation to combat the spread of the invasive species. Bighead and silver Asian carp have spread through the U.S. and are threatening to move into the Great Lakes, where it’s feared they would demolish the commercial and sport fishing industries. Scientists have tried multiple strategies — from fish poison to underwater sound and electric barriers — to prevent the spread of Asian carp. A recent study by the Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center has found that Asian carp avoid water that has been injected with carbon dioxide. Carbonated water has the same effect on native fish species, however, so it would have to be used selectively. Researchers say the carbonation would have no effect on humans — in fact, people probably wouldn’t even notice carbonated water. Researchers say using carbonated water would be ideal in commercial and recreational waterways, such as on the Mississippi River. To learn more, visit umesc.usgs.gov.

Killarney Mountain Lodge This go-slow lodge is a boater’s destination that sways to its own peaceful rhythm.

Slipping into wonderland The Fruehauf Trailer Corporation of Detroit originally built the lodge property in the late 1940s as a private hunting and fishing camp. The owners used it to entertain friends, customers and business associates on an invitation-only basis. With no road access at the time, guests flew in on company aircraft to come and savor northern hospitality and remarkable big water fishing. It was a place of stunning beauty and absolute isolation. A whole new audience was introduced to the region after the East family purchased the lodge in 1962 and a highway was built to access the newly created Killarney Provincial Park opened in 1964. Like a siren’s call, the picturesque waters and rugged wilderness entranced visitors. Soon, Killarney Mountain Lodge was no longer a well-kept secret; the Lodge blossomed into one of the finest boating destinations in the Georgian Bay area. A new chapter unfolds In January 2015, a new chapter for Killarney Mountain Lodge began. After more than 50 years of ownership, the Easts sold the Lodge to London, Ontario-based Holden Rhodes. The new owners have embarked on an ambitious $18 million three-phase plan to renovate, reinvigorate and expand the property and its amenities. All guest rooms are newly renovated with hardwood flooring and updated furniture. Many rooms have water views, offering spectacular sightlines onto the North Channel, where the sun glimmers off the tranquil water. The Pilot House Chalet, a two-bedroom cottage situated atop a rocky knoll, presents a panoramic view of the Channel. Future plans call for the construction of 60 additional guest suites with waterfront views to be completed this year (30 rooms were ready to open this year but burned down in May, just weeks before they were to be unveiled). The goal is to grow to 100 rooms by 2018. The focal point of evening entertainment is the Carousel Lounge. Carefully refurbished with reclaimed barn board flooring and restored historic furniture, it’s the place to enjoy a drink, tune in to a game on TV, or listen to live entertainment Sunday through Thursday. On pleasant evenings, head out to the adjacent patio and sit under azure skies. Boaters will find a totally new, full-service marina and a renovated boathouse, adding 25 percent more dockage

Contemporary cottage cuisine Make the effort to dine in at the resort’s rustic main dining room. The food, from locally caught whitefish — lightly battered and so light it flakes on the fork — to flavorful sirloin served on a bed of fluffy mashed potatoes, is flawlessly prepared by Chef du Cuisine Guy Bedard. Breakfast is not to be missed, especially the signature blueberry pancakes. “We call our food ‘contemporary cottage cuisine,’ using the best local produce,” explains general manager Kelly McAree. “Fresh fish is delivered every day from Herbert’s right here in town, and we have encouraged a garden program in Killarney, encouraging people to grow vegetables that we then purchase. It’s all about using the freshest local food we can get.” McAree, who managed a number of both large and small resorts in British Columbia before coming to Killarney, is enthusiastic about the resort’s future.
“We are a retreat for people who enjoy nature and tranquility, and we’ll continue to sell ourselves as a premier boater’s destination that highlights the best of the beautiful Georgian Bay region,” he explains. “About a quarter of our customers are boaters, many of them ‘loopers’ from the American Midwest. That will always be our primary appeal, but we have big plans to add amenities so that people have more to do when they’re here. The next few years will see exciting things here at the Lodge.” No hurry with those amenities. Soon after arriving at Killarney Mountain Lodge, I am lulled into a calmer, more sedate frame of mind. My wife and I contentedly sink into chairs along the Channel. As the afternoon draws to a close, everything beyond the shores, where waves lap at our feet, is washed in a haze. Parry Sound is just about 117 miles away, although it feels infinitely remote. Even the boats now coming into view seem like a mirage. We feel as if we’re someplace distant, perhaps even magical. There is blissfully nothing we need to do, really, save marvel as a perfect day’s end with an even more perfect sunset. That is the real, timeless appeal of Killarney Mountain Lodge. H

First Aid Kit Basics What to pack in order to stay safe on the water.
I
carry a mini emergency room in my cosmetic bag. There are bandages, antiseptic cream, Tylenol, pills for an upset stomach and heartburn, throat lozenges, tweezers, safety pins, a mirror, lip balm, wet wipes and red lipstick. I’m ready for anything: Well, almost. But on a boat, my cosmetic bag won’t do. The best first aid kit No first aid kit covers every scenario, and they vary in price. Basic kits have small amounts of things used frequently and never have items that are individual to a boater or the passengers. Marine kits are rated for recreational, motorboats, offshore or commercial boating use. Pick the right one and stock it with the items you need most often. Add specialty items to cover the length of the cruise. House the items in a watertight container, like the Ultralight and Watertight Medical Kit by Adventure Medical Kits (ADVENTUREMEDICALKITS.COM).

Check for these… The contents of the kit should handle cuts, abrasions, burns, headaches and fractures. Bandages won’t expire unless they’re open or wet, but antibiotics and pain medications have a shelf life. To be safe, the expiration date should be valid for two years. Unfortunately, the first aid kit is generally the last thing replenished or updated after its use. There may be tape and gauze but no scissors to cut them. Bandages or adhesive strips may be non-standard sizes. A few non-aspirin tablets are quickly used. The antiseptic creams may be enough to treat a wound for a day, but don’t count on insect spray or lip balm with a high SPF. Add in the things that you find at home. Make sure no one is allergic to the ingredients, and check that substances won’t interact negatively with medications currently taken. Lastly, is there medication and equipment for fishhook removal? Consider adding these… My friend and avid boater, Dr. David Henry, MD., from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, says, “I have always thought that there are a few things that would be useful in a first aid kit that are not generally recommended.” Here is his list. • Aspirin, 325 mg. for chest pain or heart attack — not for children. • Zantac — for heartburn. • SPF 50 sunscreen and aloe for skin cooling. • Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen for pain, especially sunburn.
• • • • • • •
Bactracin and Polymycin antibiotic ointment. Saline solutions for cleaning wounds. An eyewash kit. Gatorade for replenishing electrolytes after diarrhea. Freshwater for hydration. Pepto-Bismol for traveler’s diarrhea. Benadryl or other antihistamines, for allergic reactions and bites. Don’t forget your prescription of Prednisone or an Epipen.
Do you know how to use them? It’s great to have the equipment on-board, but diagnosing a problem may be complicated and assisting a patient might be overwhelming. Read the first aid kit manual and take a class from the Red Cross. If you haven’t had a class in the past five years, it’s time for a refresher course. Add a medical treatment book like “Chapman Quick Reference First Aid Guide: For Onboard Medical Emergencies” by Dan Fales, or “Marine Medicine: A Comprehensive Guide” by Eric A. Weiss. The Adventure Medical Kits’ Marine First Aid Kit series carries the Weiss manual and has waterproof bags to store specialty treatment items like “burns.” Pet first aid kits Even on short outings dogs may need attention, and a human’s first aid kit may not work. A separate kit with tweezers for tick and splinter removal, hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting after eating your chocolate candy bar, and a pet first aid manual is crucial. Check out the Adventure Dog Series Medical Kit. Dogs and cats can die from Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen. Baby aspirin can be given for pain, however, in a dose per weight determined by the veterinarian. Sunburn and skin issues are problematic; use products that are water repelling and don’t cause allergic reactions, especially if licked. Pets need to wear life jackets, have clean water and food, a place to relax out of the sun and trimmed nails for better grip on wet surfaces. If the animal tends to get carsick, they will more than likely get seasick aboard a boat; veterinarians can prescribe appropriate medications and treatment. Prevention is key Finally, place your first aid kit in a location where everyone can see it and get to it quickly. Make sure everyone knows what to do, including using VHF channel 16 or calling 911. DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier
It’s Easy Being Green Keep the environment and your boat clean.
Properly containing waste oil, filters, etc., reduces the chance of spills and makes recycling easier.
The job: Fluid changes Oil and coolant are your engine’s lifeblood, but just like the acid blood of those critters from the Alien movies, they’re extremely toxic to marine life. Even more insidiously, engine fluids labeled as more environmentally friendly can be anything but when it comes time to dispose of them. Even non-toxic antifreeze can become so contaminated with lead or fuel after use that it has to be managed as hazardous waste. Waste fluids generated during fall decommissioning, spring preps or routine maintenance can easily find their way into the environment if not properly managed and disposed of. The same is true of leaking or poorly maintained engines or generators, which can drip oil, fuel and transmission fluid into the water, either directly or indirectly via leaks into the bilge. 1. Use green alternatives whenever possible. Choose less toxic propylene glycol-based antifreeze (usually pink or orange) over those that use ethylene glycol (greenish-yellow). 2. Use drip pans and funnels during oil changes and while transferring antifreeze to minimize spills and drips. 3. Keep a supply of oil-absorbent rags handy for quick spill cleanup. Even small spills of oil or fuel can contaminate a large volume of water. 4. Contain and dispose of waste fluids properly. Your marina likely has disposal or recycling programs available, but there are other options as well. Automotive parts stores typically maintain a waste oil recycling station, while many household hazardous waste programs will take old, unwanted gasoline or gas/oil blends. Waste gas is typically not considered hazardous waste if it’s recycled or burned as fuel, which means another possible option for stale gas is to “recondition” it by treating and mixing it with a larger ratio of fresh gas for use in less critical equipment (lawn tractors, mowers, etc.). 5. Store waste fluids separately until you can properly dispose of them. Mixing fluids can make recycling impossible and create a veritable Hell’s Broth that’s even more toxic (and difficult) to dispose of.

6. Maintain your engine and its systems. Inspect fuel lines and cooling system hoses for cracked or deteriorated hoses, leaking connectors and chafe points. Fix leaks and other problems immediately.
The job: Battery replacement Lead and sulfuric acid (the primary components of a typical marine battery) can contaminate water, soil and even the air itself if not handled, maintained and disposed of properly. In some circumstances, batteries can also be a fire hazard or explosive. Sulfuric acid is caustic, while lead poses a serious health risk to both aquatic and terrestrial life. Keeping it green 1. Old batteries cannot simply be disposed of like non-toxic solid waste — they have to be recycled. Most retailers charge you a battery core fee if you buy a new battery without a trade-in. Trading in your battery not only offers a convenient way to dispose of that old battery, but is easy on your wallet. 2. Replace cracked or leaking batteries immediately. Never try to drain the case of a leaking battery — simply place the battery upright in a sturdy, acid-resistant, leak-proof container (such as a sealable 5-gallon plastic bucket) and transport to a recycling center.
The job: Bottom painting The toxicity of bottom paint should come as no surprise — its job, after all, is to kill aquatic critters and plants. Traditional antifouling paints contain elemental copper, cuprous oxide (a copper compound) or possibly old-school style tinoxide compounds (tributyl tinoxide), all of which kill organisms in an effort to keep your boat bottom free from growth. Prepping your hull for reapplication of bottom paint can also generate deadly waste products (sanding dust, Low-toxicity bottom paints are not only safer to use, but better for the environment.

ost everyone’s on-board with the basics when it comes to keeping our lakes and rivers clean, but what about potential environmental problems that arise as a result of improperly maintaining your vessel? Here are a few tips on how to take good care of your boat, as well as the environment.

Rather than following a scorched earth approach, use low-toxicity bottom paints — those containing the minimum amount of copper needed to get the job done. Go one step further and give some of the greener, non-toxic alternatives a try. 2. Haul your boat at a yard or marina that utilizes a “closed-loop” system, where runoff is collected in a settlement tank and filtered before being recycled. 3. For boats that are rack stored (and not continuously in the water) consider alternatives to antifouling paints, such as bottom wax or non-metallic epoxies. 4. When prepping or removing old bottom paint in preparation for painting, use dust-collecting vacuum sanders or environmentally-friendly chemical strippers (such as Franmar Soy Strip Marine Coating Remover). Use tarps and sheeting to contain paint chips, droppings and spilled materials. Weight the bottom edges of tarps and plastic sheeting to keep them in place while working in windy conditions. Use tarps to
create a windbreak to prevent flakes and residue from blowing off the drop sheet. 5. Sweep or vacuum paint chips immediately after scraping or sanding. Never use an air or water hose. 6. Avoid in-water hull cleaning if possible. If you must, use soft sponges to clean marine growth from the hull, and use stainless steel pads or brushes only on unpainted equipment (props, shafts, etc.). ★

LB: Can the Wi-Fi device be used with more than one computer?
Nial: Among other advantages, it’s very easy to use. Connecting to Wi-Fi is all done through a web browser, so no advanced computer skills are needed. Simply bring up the list of networks through a web browser on your device that is connected to one of our systems. Then, click on what you want to connect to. If a password is required, you will be asked for it. Once you’ve put in the password on the Aigean Networks Link, all of the networks will automatically be saved. The Wave Wi-Fi Rogue can save up to 10 networks.
Nial: Yes. You can connect laptops, iPads, smartphones and even smart TVs through any router. I’ve had many customers buy our products specifically so they can stream movies through Netflix or Hulu to a smart TV. We offer a couple of inexpensive routers for those who need it.
LB: What is the range of connectivity to an access point or Hotspot under ideal conditions?
Nial: We’ve had connections 7 to 9 miles from an access point on a tower over open water. That is rare. Most times it will be 8 to 10 times the distance you’d get with a laptop. It mostly depends on the marina’s access point power and quality. Do they use a cheap home router in the dock master’s office or a more capable, high-powered outdoor access point with specifications comparable to ours? Wi-Fi is two-way dependent, so your connection is only as good as your weakest component. LB: What factors determine the connection distance?
Nial: It depends on the power of the access point you are trying to connect to and the type/positioning of the antenna(s). Other factors include obstacles affecting clear line-of-sight, radio environment (such as other Wi-Fi devices), atmospheric conditions and poor access point configurations. LB: Why does Land and Sea use Ethernet as opposed to a USB cable?

Nial: USB devices require software drivers on the computer it is plugged into, and the length of the cable is limited. Some USB devices don’t have drivers for Apple’s Mac computers. Ethernet will plug into any computer with an Ethernet port or router. It’s all automatic; there’s no software to install or configuring to do. The technical limitation of Ethernet is 300-plus feet. USB also makes sharing the connection through a network very difficult and requires additional software or hardware, in addition to having a PC that’s always on.

LB: What devices are appropriate for smaller boats and why?
Nial: The Link 2 by Aigean Networks is my first choice and the Wave Wi-Fi’s Rogue Wave is a close second. Both paired with any router are ideal. They are very simple to mount and move if needed. I’ve had boaters tell me they have even tied them to a rope and raised them up the mast. They will lower and stow it when they get underway. Aigean Networks AN-7000
LB: What devices are suitable for larger yachts?
Nial: Aigean Networks’ AN-7000 is the newest and most capable marine-based device on the market with dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and MIMO (multi-in, multi-out antennas) on each frequency. It has much faster throughput than other systems, although both the Aigean Link and Wave Wi-Fi Rogue are sometimes used on larger yachts. It all comes down to how important internet is to the customer. LB: Are Wi-Fi devices hard to install?
Nial: Not at all. Plug an Ethernet cable into a device at the antenna, run it down to the router, plug it into power, wait a minute for it to start up, connect the computer to the router and bring up the interface from the device through the web browser. The hardest part is figuring out how and where to run the Ethernet cable. After a little practice, users can mount and dismount the devices. The larger units should be professionally installed for best results. LB: What is the price range of Land and Sea Wi-Fi devices?
Nial: The Aigean Link is priced at $350. The top-ofthe-line AN-7000 costs $2,745. There are mid-range options available as well. ★

ly is the short version of flybridge; however, hipsters, rappers and social media have been using the word to describe something that is cool and in style — like Sea Ray’s new 400 Fly. Multiple entertainment venues greet you at the transom, where the extended swim platform doubles as a teak beach or hydraulic tender launch, and provides access to the optional transom gourmet space. A grill and sink with storage drawers underneath keep the party outdoors for meals and entertaining. Another optional cooking venue is available on the flybridge, adjacent to the U-shaped settee and table, and is complete with a handy fridge. The main galley is located on the salon level. Sea Ray has moved the flybridge helm station to port, created an impressive command center outfitted with multifunction displays of your choosing, and provided an expansive gathering point on the bridge with each seat offering incomparable views. Walker Bay Generation 525 Exceeding expectations.
R
igid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) are a niche market; designing one that sets new standards for design is admirable. But Walker Bay, an innovator in several recreational marine categories, introduced a new RIB: The Generation 525, a 17-footer that exceeds expectations in function, design and comfort. Plywood stringers are out. Walker Bay spent countless hours developing an improved polyurethane composite micro stringer system that results in a lighter, smoother ride. Behind the scenes, factory tooling includes a proprietary jig and alignment system that improves the accuracy of the RIBs track, lessens the likelihood of stress cracks and provides better handling. The Generation 525 has a unique approach to joining the hull and deck using a unidirectional glass and polyurethane grid bonding system that eliminates the air cavity found in other RIBs. This creates a stronger hull that’s far better at absorbing wave chop and a lighter-weight boat (at 1,160 lbs.) that’s quick to plane and faster to ride. While it’s only natural to compare a RIB and dinghy — since they are somewhat like cousins — the Generation 525
inherits better looks. A spacious cockpit layout has more of a boat feel, including a flip-up driver’s seat for extra room while standing. A very welcome feature is the hydraulic tilt steering system. Meticulous attention to detail includes recessed port and starboard teak boarding steps, a removable leaning post boarding handle, seven davit lifting points, six stainless steel handrails, five cup holders and four pop-up, stainless steel cleats. While there is no partridge in a pear tree, the 10-gallon freshwater transom shower will be a welcome relief after a day of snorkeling or island gunk-holing. Actually, your pears, apples and grapes will all fit nicely in the insulated cooler locker. Paired with a 115-hp quiet outboard, you may wish to add an optional retractable ski pole for towing the kids on tubes, wakeboards and skis; top speed is roughly 44 mph. One other tantalizing option is the bow area deluxe sun bed. Rated for 10 passengers, the Generation 525 has a 32-gallon built-in fuel tank. You will be amazed at how much space is available inside the 8-foot, 4-inch beam. ★

U
nbridled anticipation: That’s the feeling that overcame me as I headed towards this sea trial assignment. It wasn’t a regular excursion either. Due to scheduling issues, I had to get up early — before dawn — for the two-hour trek to the meeting point. Cup of joe? Check. Bagel to nosh? Check. Map app to get me there? Check. I ramped up my speed on the highway, a few clicks over the limit in eagerness to get to my destination. (Eventually I pulled back to eliminate the possibility of meeting my local law enforcement officer — that would spoil the whole story). Piercing the darkness, the sun’s rays started to highlight the morning fog over the open fields, yielding to a near cloudless sky as I continued down the thoroughfare. What had me so stirred up this morning, with butterflies in my belly the likes I haven’t had since I was a newbie captain many years ago? I wasn’t going out on a big yacht, or a hardy sportfish. No, I was getting giddy about the new Stingray 186 Center Console. First impression
It’s like this: Here is a brand new model for Stingray. The company that builds sporty deck boats has crafted a center console. And it’s so new that I’ll be riding on the prototype, not even hull number one. I’ll be the first journalist to ride along and write along. It’s out of my usual comfort zone of size, and that’s cool. About 30 minutes out, I called my contact, Aaron Dumont, regional sales manager at Stingray Boats, for instructions on my final approach. After a few miles on side roads, I could smell the salty air permeating the car’s cabin — a sure sign I was moving in the right direction. After turning into the park, the Ranger gave me directions to the boat ramp. Here we go! As I pulled into the parking lot, the 186CC was evident right away. Proudly perched on her single axle trailer, the 186CC glistened in the sunlight, thanks to the metal trimmed rubrail and polished gelcoat hull. After greetings, Dumont went right into explaining the features and highlights of the 186CC, not so much as a salesman, but as a proud employee showing off the next best thing since sliced bread. Dumont’s passion was evident, as his

background and family life is pretty much centered on boating and being on the water. The 186CC is his baby, and he has an enviable job of showing it off to the world. pUt throUgh her paces
The 186CC has a low profile with just under a 5-foot bridge clearance. If bridges are a concern in your boating area, this may be a solution. The package may fit nicely inside a home garage; I would prefer that over storing it in a rack, unless I can get the coveted top row. Launching and securing is easily a one-man operation, so stepping on and getting out was a breeze. After checking out the local scenery, it was time to hold on as Dumont put the 186CC through her paces. Powered by a single Yamaha 115-hp outboard, I noticed the hull do two things: One, it cut through the chop nicely and held its track during the range of speeds and turns, thanks to the 19-degree forward deadrise and 15 degrees on the transom. My other observation was that when on plane, the point of contact with the water surface is back behind the bow, almost midship. This not only makes for a dry ride, it also reduces the noise level of the water on the hull. Credit has to go to the Stingray exclusive Z-Plane hull, where strakes have no vertical edges that can trap air bubbles, thereby reducing performance. The 186CC topped out at about 42.5 mph — an exhilarating speed on an open boat. Bells and whistles
Stingray has created a fun, stable and convertible platform. The center console has a helm seat for two, with a backrest that swings forward for rear-facing seating (and opt for

the ski tow). There’s also a forward helm seat with padded backrest. Grabrails on either side of the helm pod are beefy and stable, and also secure the forward windshield. A sport-style wheel with a suicide knob is easy to handle thanks to the electronic steering. The dash has two beveled, chrome-ringed analog rpm, mph, voltage and fuel combo analog gauges. There’s plenty of room to add a 10-inch fishfinder/plotter display. Power jacks and in-dash storage are included, as well as cup holders and room to mount ancillary gear on the console top. Additional seating can be found in the center aft padded seat with backrest. Oh, and the two aft walk-through openings (so you don’t have to step on the seating) flip up for two more jump seats with backrests. Want storage? Stingray has really figured out the best utilization of space in my book. Here’s a list: Foredeck center is the anchor gear locker flanked by port and starboard storage lockers, great for fenders and lines; the center console that once unlatched flips back to reveal not only access to electronics and battery, but storage for gear; the forward helm seat houses an 18-gallon cooler or optional livewell; the main helm seat has a 26-gallon livewell (hey, you have to store the bait, right?); and rear storage (great for a large cooler) is under the aft seat. Don’t forget about the side rod storage. Whew! And speaking of rods, Dumont and I did wet a line during our tour to prove that this is not only a fun cruising boat but also a viable fishing platform. a large foredeck, tackle drawers and 12 rod holders, battling a finned foe is easy. Opt for the forward fishing seat and you have a flats boat, too, thanks to the shallow draft. By the way, that seat is securely mounted to the deck, as tested by my 250 pounds of beefcake — the diet starts tomorrow.

Founded by Al Fink in 1979, Stingray Boats (named after his affection of the automobiles of the same name) has a 225,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Hartsville, South Carolina. he stepped hull on Scout Boats’ newest innovative design, the 231 XS center console, is more designed for fishing; it’s not simply a pleasure boat. But that doesn’t mean it’s just a run-ofthe-mill fishing platform. This 23-foot bay boat is a beautiful inshore fishing machine. Scout spent more than a year developing the second in the XS series, to compliment the popular 251 XS. An important part of the process included consulting with charter captains and fishing guides. The results translate into a range of amenities that should please any fishing enthusiast. LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Starting at the bow, casting platforms are located on the flush deck. There are also two locking horizontal rod storage lockers, a plug for a 36-volt trolling motor mounted in the anchor locker and an optional 11-gallon livewell. Another option forward is a deck base plate to hold a butt-seat extension. Vertical rod storage is featured on either side of the console. An added feature to the rack storage is an upper bracket that provides more rod protection underway. Two stainless flush rod holders, as well as four stainless dual cup/rod holders, round out the choices of rod placement. Aft, 26-gallon lighted livewells to port and starboard bracket the fishing platform; both are designed to be release or bait wells.
Plentiful options
Seating consists of a bench seat attached to the front of the console with a cushion and backrest; another bench seat is located at the stern. The helm seat is a standard high performance leaning post with a curved cushion; one of its cushions slides down to make a seat. The leaning post accommodates two people and provides an added sense of security, especially when running at high speeds. Other innovations include a storage compartment forward between the rod lockers, which holds a 45-quart Yeti cooler and still has room for life jackets and other gear. The entire front of the console opens upward, much like the cargo door on an SUV, revealing space for batteries, storage and an optional Porta Potti — my first option recommendation. Rather than folding up onto the transom, the swim ladder has its own built-in storage compartment, keeping the area clear for fishing tackle. The aft seat also folds down, offering yet another fishing platform. Another notable Scout feature is the easy accessibility under the aft seat to the bilge where livewell pumps, raw water pumps and a toolkit are installed. The console and its windscreen incorporate Scout’s curved design. The console houses the steering wheel that drives the Sea Star hydraulic steering, as well as an integrated navigation system, a storage area, Yamaha gauges and controls, a Fusion stereo system and a jack plate control. Other options include an Edson steering wheel, an LED trim indicator switch and power poles with bracket mounts. An optional powder-coated T-top can be ordered, and buyers can opt for four different hull colors and different cushion color packages. One last option has the most impact on the 231 XS: The engine. Prospective owners can choose between a 200-hp Yamaha that tops out at around 50 mph, while the 300-hp model has reached up to 66 mph. My test drive was on the model with the F300 engine. But as luck would have it, the weather offered up dark gray skies, gusty winds and pouring rain that hindered having an extensive test drive.
Run like a thoroughbred
Scout founder and CEO, Steve Potts, describes the 231 XS as having “sexy, aggressive lines.” As I looked down from the main dock at the 231 XS and her older, larger sister, the 251 XS, I could understand what he meant. On the 231 XS, the flush deck accentuates the height of the bow and, coupled with the line back to the reverse transom, the boat just appears, well, racy. It looks really different from the 251 XS. Or, as my husband notes, “It’s kind of like looking at a thoroughbred next to a regular horse.” When it was time to see if the 231 XS could also run like a thoroughbred, she didn’t disappoint, giving us an exhilarating (although short) ride. The boat felt solid beneath our feet, accelerating smoothly but powerfully to plane. During the two high-speed turns we made, the helmsman position still felt safe and dry (except for the

In normal conditions, the Yamaha F300 had the best cruise performance at 3,500 rpm traveling at 32.5 mph for a fuel burn of 8.8 gph or 3.70 mpg. It topped out at 6,000 rpm at 60.5 mph with 26.1 gph and 2.32 mpg. Once again, Scout Boats has achieved Potts’ quest to create “a hardcore fishing machine” packed with innovation and performance. A Life Spent Playing with Boats The humble and spirited force behind the Irish Boat Shop. BY HOWARD MEYERSON
I
n the resort community of Harbor Springs, Michigan, the name Dave Irish brings nods of affirmation. Accolades often follow about the 79-year-old entrepreneur who sailed into port as a 6-year-old boy with his family; who grew up working on boats in his father’s shop; and who, at 24 years old, would open a boat shop of his own. His legacy, Irish Boat Shop, is well known in boating circles as a high-quality, family-run boatyard and marina. It opened in 1961 on the sheltered waters of Little Traverse Bay on Lake Michigan. A decade later, Irish built a second location on Lake Charlevoix where he now offers dockage at two sites. If asked, Irish admits to being a highly competitive sailor, and a man who has been involved in the upper echelons of Olympic sailing governance. But those who know him say he’s not one to brag. “I like being around boats and water, and particularly enjoy the company of people who have and use boats,” declares Irish, a tall and lanky, soft-spoken man with a penchant for laughter and enjoying life. “Our customers are here because they want to play with their boats, and my job is facilitating them having a good time. I’ve never felt burdened doing the job I call ‘playing with boats.’”

Irish Boat Shop (IBS) is a full-service operation that serves boaters from all over the Great Lakes region. Its skilled staff handles power and sailboats. The company has 300 slips and more than 200,000 square feet of cold and heated indoor storage. The Charlevoix operation handles boats up to 80 feet in length, while Harbor Springs handles boats up to 65 feet. Michael Esposito, president and CEO for IBS, says the company’s technical and yard crews can handle nearly any job, from engine work to hull damage, painting and electrical, or mast and rigging repairs. “We can provide virtually any service a recreational boat requires,” Esposito notes. “With the exception of AC and refrigeration or boat trailers (where specialists are brought in), anything that needs to be done with a boat we can do.”

Irish is sitting in his sunny, second-story marina office overlooking the waters of the bay. He is dressed in casual attire — the look of someone who is comfortable with success but without any pretense. Thoughtful and well spoken, he is known for being civic-minded, a man concerned about bettering the community. Irish served as Harbor Springs’ mayor for six years. Prior to that he held a seat on City Council and helped found the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, along with the Little Traverse Conservancy — a regional land trust established to protect natural areas nearby. Despite his age and retirement as CEO in 2007, Irish still comes into the office every day. There are boats to play with and things to do. His 25-year-old grandson, Colin Texter, the company’s marketing and sales coordinator, has his routine down. “He’s in every day from 8 to 12 and 1:30 to 5,” notes Texter, the youngest adult grandson of 10 grandsons — and the only one employed by the company. “Professionally, he is very wise and very conservative in his business practices, but personally he is very friendly and has a positive attitude. It’s in the way he carries himself; he’s not boastful or flashy.” Irish laughs when he hears of his grandson’s comments. “Evil child,” he quips with a gleam in his eye.

Esposito took over as president when Irish retired in 2007. He began with the company in 1994 after managing a Chicago yacht yard. Starting as general manager of Irish’s Harbor Springs shop, Esposito says one of his goals was to incorporate computers and other modern technology into daily operations. Doing so integrated important business functions that enabled both shops to operate as one company. “That changed the company tremendously,” Esposito explains. “Each had developed differently, and they were run differently. It now operates more like one company with two locations. The idea was that customers could go to either [location] and feel like they were dealing with the same business. They get the same greeting on the phone and the same service.” Esposito attributes the company’s success to Dave Irish, who stresses quality. He describes Irish as “complicated, but very bright” — someone conservative in his business practices. The company operates with no long-term debt. Its growth was achieved on a cash-basis, where other companies leverage assets for expansion. “We’ve operated slowly and consistently,” Esposito says. “In the early 2000s we were often criticized by peer and performance groups who said we should leverage this and buy that, but in the 2008 recession we didn’t have to lay anyone off. That philosophy over 50 years has allowed us to grow in a slow but consistent pattern, and we think that is healthy.” IBS sells J/Boats, Alerion Yachts, and LaserPerformance sailboats, Boston Whaler, Sea Ray, Nautique, Zodiac, and Sealegs powerboats. It has attained some of the highest levels of certification and recognition in the industry, according to Esposito. The company is a Brunswick Master Dealer, Mercury Marine Platinum Dealer, Authorized Hinckley Service Center for the Great Lakes Region and authorized Legacy Service Center. “Both Harbor Springs and Charlevoix are Michigan Certified Clean Marinas,” Esposito elaborates. “That’s a program that certifies boat yards on their performance meeting a variety of environmental standards and having clean operations. We’re also proud that within our company we have three Certified Marina Managers, which is an international designation from the International Marina Institute.”

Irish considered opening a third marina in Traverse City, Michigan, another popular resort town, but later thought better of it. IBS had the financial resources, but the “fit wasn’t good,” Irish says. The time demands would be high, and that would pull him away from the existing operations. Delivering quality is an important business pillar at IBS. “I just wasn’t comfortable,” Irish explains. “I had a talk with myself and said, ‘Irish, you can probably do this, but do you want to?’ It didn’t pass the test, and the lifestyle I live took precedence. I didn’t want to spend that much time driving and never have time to go on the dock and talk with customers about their boats. We really [strive] to be on time with our scheduling, where traditional boat yards always tend to be late — it’s a hardwired habit — and we don’t do that. If we don’t finish a job on time, we steal the valuable and scarce time that customers have to play with their boats.”

Irish grew up under the tutelage of his father, Herb Irish, a hard-drinking man who was not always pleasant. But he considers him an important mentor and gifted in other ways. The two enjoyed walks in the woods and sailing together when Irish was a boy. His mother, Edith, was a “can-do, wonderful, enthusiastic person,” Irish says. “[Dad] was a mixed bag. When he was drinking, he was someone you didn’t want to be around. But when he was good, he was really good, very capable. He could fix a transmission without any tools,” Irish reflects, laughing gently about an incident on the fateful 1943 sailing trip from Lake St. Clair to Harbor Springs, where the family resettled. Herb Irish had been an inspector at Willow Run manufacturing complex near Ypsilanti, Michigan, where B-24 bombers were built for the war effort. A union steward overruled him after a problem with airplane engine firewalls. Failures occurred and airplanes were lost. “He said, ‘We won’t live this way anymore,’” Irish recounts. “We gave up our rental house, put the furniture in storage and put the family on the boat (a 1903, 32-foot Crosby Catboat). There were five of us: My mom, dad, two sisters and me. My parents didn’t know where they were

going, but they had heard of Charlevoix. We sailed and got here October 6. The colors were just beautiful. We couldn’t believe how clear the water was, and Dad said ‘I guess we will stay here.’ He tied up, and we did.” Today, Irish and his wife, Ann, live in Harbor Springs, the homeport they love and where they raised four children. When not working, Irish still likes to mess around with sailboats. He owns an NM, an early Northern Michigan one-design, and a J/111 that he campaigns in serious competition. Over the years, he has served as president of the U.S. Sailing Association, vice president of the International Sailing Federation and director of the Michigan Boating Industries Association. Texter fondly remembers the early sailing lessons, the Thanksgiving gatherings, and the personal and professional advice he’s received from his grandfather. Today he occasionally crews for Irish on what he calls the “beer can races.” “I remember sailing with him pretty vividly. It was probably my first time,” Texter recalls. “I was five or six and we were heeled over. I thought we were going to die — and grandpa was at the helm having a ball. That was inspirational.”
Protecting the pristine environment
Irish is known as a skipper who “doesn’t yell,” which is a significant distinction among racing sailors and one that carries over to his management style in business. He is well respected by the environmental community, too. Irish Boat Shop was one of the first area marinas to attain Michigan Clean Marina Certification. “Dave is a great community leader,” offers Gail Gruenwald, executive director for Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, an area nonprofit group that works to keep Northern Michigan waters clean. “He’s one to look at the big picture and he values personal stewardship. I’ve known him for 30 years. He commits himself to nonprofits and is very philanthropic. He wouldn’t necessarily call himself an environmentalist, but he sees the need and value of conserving natural resources.” Tom Bailey agrees. He’s the executive director for the Little Traverse Conservancy that Irish and others founded in 1972 as an alternative to using litigation to stop development and preserve the area’s beautiful natural features.

“Dave isn’t an orthodox environmentalist; neither is he a hook and bullet guy,” Bailey notes. “He appreciates that this part of Northern Michigan is a wonderful place to live because of the environment here. And you don’t want to kill the goose that laid the golden egg. He sees that a pristine environment is good for business…and it is in everyone’s best interest to maintain a healthy balance between land development and land conservation.” Irish chuckles now about the litigation he and others initiated in the 1970s looking to halt two large development projects that were being proposed for Harbor Springs. The litigation was contentious, and Irish said he had hoped to “run the bastards out.” But he eventually soured on using legal tactics and came to favor the voluntary approach utilized by the land conservancy. “That was a really crazy time,” Irish reflects. “There was huge growth (here) and everything was getting sold. I’m not a ‘no-growther’ but I am a little less aggressive about desiring growth. And maybe that’s because we have a comfortable business here. There is a general feeling here that more is not necessarily better. We don’t need to be or want to be the biggest resort town.”

Irish owns and tends a 500-acre wooded parcel outside of town that he is proud of. It is managed for high-quality commercial timber grown on a sustainable basis. The land was acquired in 1947 and it is now “part of the family,” Irish says. The logging trails are groomed for cross-country skiing in winter. On his own time, Irish remains physically active. If not racing sailboats, he cross-country skis and enjoys citizen ski racing on area downhill slalom courses. He is a man who likes to push himself. He enjoys ski mountaineering and helicopter skiing in British Columbia, but laments that he had to give up European and Canadian hut-skiing last year. In 2014 he finished first in his age class while competing on the 20-kilometer cross-country ski course in the White Pine Stampede, an annual northern Michigan race. When asked what else he does for fun, Irish smiles, looks around the office and at the marina below, then stretches out his arms and says simply: “All this.” ★

’ve finished most of my sampler pours of Cashmere Hammer, a nitro rye stout, and Rebel Kent the First, a tasty Belgian style amber ale, but there’s enough left that I mutter “not quite yet” when the waitress at 3 Sheeps Brewing Company starts taking the glasses away. “Ah. One more schluck?” she asks, grinning. Huh? “German for sip,” the guy at the next stool explains. And so, in a factory-turned-brewery on my first evening in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, I get my first taste of the way old and new coexist in this friendly town built mainly by German immigrants. Those early settlers left their legacy on this port midway between Milwaukee and Door County through an industrial heritage and a popularity of beer; a legacy with menu items like the famed Reuben wraps at 8th Street Ale House and events like Al and Al’s Steinhaus’ Oktoberfest. The city takes brats seriously; the nickname, “Bratwurst Capital of the World,” was officially secured in 1970 after battling for the title with the city of Bucyrus, Ohio.

New claims to fame have emerged as well; farm-to-table fare and trendy microbrews have made the town a culinary draw, while sandy beaches, clean water and impressive waves have created a surfing Mecca in what’s sometimes called the “Malibu of the Midwest.” “When you come into a small, curiously-named town like Sheboygan, you expect the small town Wisconsin aspect,” notes Kevin Revolinski, author of “Backroads and Byways of Wisconsin” and “Wisconsin’s Best Beer Guide.” “While the brat capital title is amusing and delicious, the certified authentic Pizza Napoletana (at downtown’s Il Ritrovo) is a surprise, and the local brewery is fast becoming notable for its specialty brews. The open house might feature a paddleboard demo, a Sheepshead card tournament or a trivia contest in the upstairs game room. “We have an approach where we look at our hospitality more like a resort would,” Bauer says. “We have winter boat storage and hauling, and all the traditional services, but our main focus is to offer a vacation feel.” The marina’s on-site store promotes the eat-local sensibility found elsewhere, stocking local Grand Champion brats from Miesfeld’s Meat Market and the popular jalapeno cheddar from Hennings Cheese. The marina also rents slips on the town’s South Beach area, anchored by Blue Harbor Resort, a popular site for weddings and the venue for the annual craft beer fest. For those who opt to sleep off the boat, Blue Harbor Resort’s 180 guest rooms are close enough to Lake Michigan for a stunning view and a lullaby of crashing waves. The on-site spa, miniature golf course, popular
indoor waterpark and lakeshore trails are offered for resort guests or visitor day use. Harbor Centre Marina connects via boardwalks to wide beaches at the North Side Municipal Beach, the iconic Sheboygan Breakwater Lighthouse and Deland Park — home to frequent festivals. There is an intriguing art community and heritage in Sheboygan. The John Michael Kohler Art Center features multiple galleries and rotating exhibits — among them, wall designs crafted from bugs and the original coat of the Rhinestone Cowboy. The Art Center also has a quirky art tour of its six artistdesigned bathrooms. The clever Bookworm Gardens on the local campus of the University of Wisconsin, Sheboygan, offers six literature-themed gardens with related laminated books to read in each. Look for “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Charlotte’s Web,” or “Three Little Pigs,” fittingly read inside a straw or brick house. Local coffee shops display the works of so many local artists that you could take an informal art tour with coffee, notes Amy Wilson, the city’s tourism and planning

added homes for the immigrant workers who flocked by the hundreds to craft the ceramic bath and kitchen products. The region’s history stretches back to the ancient Hopewell tribe, the builders of the earthen mounds showcased at Sheboygan’s Indian Mound Park. The tribe later built industries like fur trading, fishing and chair making. Its fortunes turned to enamelware after John Michael Kohler (later elected mayor of Sheboygan) purchased a foundry in rural Wisconsin to make cast-iron and steel farm implements and hitching posts. A decade later, he sprinkled a horse trough with enamel powder and showcased it in a catalog as a “horse trough/ hog scalder... which, when furnished with four legs will serve as a bathtub.” A replica of the tub is now displayed as part of the history exhibit in the lower level of the Kohler Design Center. Take the factory tour to see tubs in their molten state. The Design Center’s basement showcases the history of tub and sink design, down to color and function. If you wonder why the city’s film claim-to-fame is the surfing rooster in the animated film “Surf’s Up” (the rooster’s hometown is Sheboygan), look to the topography that often leads to 20-foot waves along Deland Park beach, Wilson says. Since the 1950s, locals have ridden the waves, creating a cult industry that’s made this the unofficial surfing base for the Midwest. Surfing lessons are offered for experts and beginners alike. the country’s top 10 golf courses. The golf course hosted the 2004, 2010 and 2015 PGA Championship. Further inland, the Whistling Straits Irish course features grasslands and dunes. World Golf Hall of Fall designer Pete Dye crafted both courses. For picturesque dune views and hiking trails, visit the Kohler-Andrae State Park, which, according to the Wisconsin DNR, is one of the last natural preserves along the Lake Michigan shoreline. In 1894, the three-masted schooner Lottie Cooper sank just off the coast of Sheboygan. The wreck of Lottie was later discovered and reassembled at Deland Park, and is the only wreck from the Great Lakes that you can walk through.

Northwest Marine Yacht Club A quiet and friendly marina on Lake Charlevoix.
T
he Lake Charlevoix region in northern Michigan is ripe for adventure. Located just off of Lake Michigan, Lake Charlevoix is the perfect base for countless day and weekend trips. Sometimes, though, it’s nice to stay somewhere familiar, put your feet up and relax. Northwest Marine Yacht Club, whose slogan is “A port you can finally call home!” is such a place. Founded in 1981, Northwest Marine was Michigan’s first “dockominium,” meaning boaters can purchase slips at the marina, rather than renew a lease each season. The marina’s basic services — including its impeccably clean facilities and friendly staff — contribute to the family-friendly and low-key atmosphere. The marina also offers seasonal rentals, a swimming pool, a fire pit, picnic areas, free Wi-Fi, and shower and laundry facilities. However, Northwest Marine’s homey and tranquil atmosphere doesn’t mean it’s lackluster; Eric Kammerman, Northwest Marine’s harbormaster, says the marina is very socially active. Each year, the marina holds a spring fling, as well as an annual picnic. Kammerman says the social committee usually schedules additional events throughout the season.

The marina is near the public beach and playground, and just a short walk to downtown Charlevoix’s shops, markets and restaurants — it’s the perfect combination of private yet accessible. Although Northwest Marine does not offer any repair services, there are municipal launch ramps and lifts nearby, and the Irish Boat Shop’s extensive service department is within a stone’s throw. “We are walking distance to anything you need,” Kammerman says. There are 207 slips at Northwest Marine for boats up to 55 feet. Kammerman says there are roughly 17 transient slips, depending on which members are out on the water for the day. He recommends boaters call the morning of the day they’d like to dock at a transient slip. For more tech-savvy boaters, the marina will be using Dockwa this season, allowing boaters to reserve a slip directly from their smartphone or computer. So if you need a place with friendly faces to recuperate for a day (or an entire season), Northwest Marine Yacht Club is there. “It’s a great destination,” Kammerman says. “Come in and make it your home.” ★

Tradition
The Tradition is a 1939 24-foot Chris-Craft Deluxe Utility and is hull no. 1 of seven made. This model was built on the same hull as the 24-foot Sportsman, and is appointed with minimal hardware. We found this boat in St. Clair, Michigan, and bought it for the windshield only, as the 21 Utility we had was missing one. The boat was gray with no varnish and was pretty toasty. After some research, we discovered that this model was quite rare. This boat was one of seven boats made for the Smith family, as they got a new boat every year or two. Tradition was restored over a five-year period. It makes for a dry and comfortable ride, even in Big Water. We trailer this boat from a cottage just south of Grand Haven, Michigan. We love to get up early in the morning when we still have an offshore breeze and fly up the lake just off the first sandbar. It doesn’t get any better than that. Our father, Henry Schantz, a Navy World War II veteran, instilled in his family the love of wind, water and boats. He helped form the Grand Traverse Ice Yacht Club and was an avid sailor with 24 Chicago Macs under his belt. Whether hard water or soft water, he never met a body of water he didn’t like.
