Built to last.

T

he specification of highest quality materials is at the heart of every Marlow Explorer® built, both seen and unseen. As example the specification of 316L stainless steel for cleats, chocks, stanchions, rub rails and other hardware yields provides the magnificent finish and corrosion resistance well beyond the common. In the engine room the same materials grace the exotic carbon fiber main stringers with beautiful custom made engine mounts on premium vibration isolators by Trelleborg. In lieu of mass produced off the shelf components by hundreds of vendors, insuring a yacht that is beautiful, durable and easy to maintain continues throughout. Far more of a Marlow is built by Marlow’s own full time artisans in our own shops to create the fit, finish and perfect function we believe Marlow owners deserve and have come to expect. Our design, fit, seams and welds border on artwork in fit, finish, function and sheer beauty to quote a respected maritime journalist. From the top of the mast to the custom CNC propellers, nothing escapes the eye of the bright minds at Marlow. It begins with specification of premium material but the design, care and flawless execution is what makes a Marlow Shine… Literally.

On the COver Made in the Great Lakes for the Great Lakes, the Tiara F44 Flybridge is, according to our writer, “a destination unto itself.” Ascend the staircase to take advantage of the spacious flybridge’s view. On the main deck, the F44 boasts a modern galley and an indoor/outdoor design that blends the salon and cockpit. Down below are two staterooms. Don’t miss a chance to ride on this “cruising man’s yacht.”

THE BEAUTY OF A CARVER YACHT IS MORE THAN SKIN DEEP. A lot of boats at the dock are all glitz and glamour. But how well do they perform when the going gets rough? All that pizazz is small comfort when you’re bouncing off the wave tops or wallowing in the troughs. At Carver, we’ve been building boats for more than 60 years that can handle the roughest water on the planet—the Great Lakes. Unlike salt water, fresh water is hard. Rock hard. And those waves can be steep and breaking. That means you take it on the chin, one wave after another in rapid succession. So we support our hulls with an extraordinary stringer system that reinforces the bow as much as the hull bottom. It’s not glamorous, but you’ll be glad of it the first time it’s blowing hard out at sea. No wonder Carver Yachts is taking the marine industry by storm. Sea trial one at your Carver Yachts dealer soon.

Stringers extend up the bow to prevent “oil canning” and reduce vibration in the hull when running into head seas.

The entire interior of the hull is coated with a white epoxy paint for easier maintenance and service.

Molded stringers are created using multiple layers of fiberglassengineered fabric for lighter weight, superior strength and resistance to water damage. Extra reinforcement in key areas provides rigid structural support for engines and generators. CARVERYACHTS.COM

See The Difference.

FROM THE HELM by Kate Bush

Boating on a Budget The boating lifestyle can be attainable.

“T

here’s no way I can afford it,” is the most common remark I hear when asking someone if they plan on getting a boat. And it’s a valid concern. Inflation and innovations in the industry have made a large percentage of desired boats out of reach for many. Boaters that are new to the water or have never even dipped their toes in may be blown away by high prices. But there are solutions! Today’s biggest boatbuilders offer many models that are attainable for boaters on a budget. Check out six models that are less than $35,000 (p. 44). From pontoons, bowriders, deckboats and wakeboats, there’s a style for just about any boater. Other options to get a leg in the boating game include joining a boat club, such as Freedom Boat Club, buying used or financing a new boat. Did you know that a Great Lakes company produces the world’s most powerful outboard engine? Wisconsin-based Seven Marine announced its 557-hp back in 2011 and has since added an even more powerful engine, the 627 (p. 48). These bespoke powerplants pack a punch! Located on the southern Lake Superior shoreline, Ontonagon, Michigan offers stunning landscapes that only Michigan’s Upper Peninsula can provide (p. 52). Hike the Porcupine Mountains, go spelunking in a historic mine, dine at one of the many fine restaurants, and take a walk down River Street to stop into a variety of shops and museums. Lastly, our tour of Georgian Bay has come full circle. Contributor Marty Richardson completes her circumnavigation of this Lake Huron gem (p. 26), taking readers to spectacular ports, including Port au Baril, Britt and Killarney. See you on the water! Do you have a story idea you’d like to suggest? Email me at kbush@lakelandboating.com to share your ideas.

GREAT LAKES NEWS

Visit Racine, Wisconsin Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan shore is lined with charming, must-visit ports. One of these ports is Racine — ideally positioned between Chicago and Milwaukee. Known for its Kringle and Frank Llyod Wright architecture, this lakeside town is brimming with culture and activities. Racine’s rich maritime history is always on display at the Racine Heritage Museum, where visitors can see a display of original drawings by Fred Martin, a renowned boat

designer who worked for the Racine Boat Company during the 1890s. Legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright has a significant legacy in the Racine area. The SC Johnson corporate campus, near downtown Racine, is anchored by the Wrightdesigned SC Johnson Administration Building and Research Tower. But no visit to Racine is complete without sampling delicious Kringle, Wisconsin’s official state pastry. This distinctive oval-shaped treat

has been a Racine County tradition since Danish immigrants brought it to Wisconsin in the mid-19th century. An authentic Danish Kringle is 32 layers of flaky, buttery dough filled with a variety of fruits and nuts and baked until golden brown. The five Racine area Kringle bakeries proudly ship their product all over the world — particularly during the Christmas holiday season. For more information on Racine, visit REALRACINE.COM.

Suzuki Unveils New 350-hp Model

In early June, Suzuki Marine unveiled the latest addition to its award-winning four-stroke outboard line: The all-new 350-hp DF350A. The largest V-6 four-stroke outboard Suzuki has built to date, the 4.4L engine features a high-efficiency 12.0:1 compression ratio and contra-rotating three-blade propellers. While the contrarotating props have been used in inboard engines with pod drives for years, the DF350A represents their first appearance on a production outboard. Other key features include digital shift and throttle, Suzuki’s Lean Burn control technology, and compatibility with SeaStar joystick controls. Like Suzuki’s other V-6 outboards, the DF350A features an offset driveshaft, which allows for a more compact overall size and two-stage gear reduction. Available in black or white finishes, the DF350A runs on 90-octane fuel and is fully NMEA 2000-compliant. The low-emission engine is CARB 3-rated. The DF350A’s retail price starts at $31,565. EVINRUDE PHOTO BY CRAIG RITCHIE

Electronic joystick controls make it easy for even inexperienced boaters to precisely maneuver their boat when docking, even in the toughest conditions. With the release of the all-new iDock joystick propulsion system, Evinrude has gone one step further and made joystick control easily affordable, as well. With a retail price of just $5,999, Evinrude’s iDock system comes in at about one-third the cost of competing technologies. Available for boats with twin E-TEC G2 150and 300-hp engines, iDock incorporates advanced aircraft gyroscope sensor technology to automatically compensate for wind and current. A two-stage joystick is pressure-sensitive, increasing power the farther the joystick is pushed, allowing boaters to instantly double the thrust if needed. “Evinrude iDock connects with the existing internal hydraulic steering system in the E-TEC G2 engines, which is a big reason we can offer it at such an attractive price,” says Evinrude Global Product Manager, Jason Eckman. “It leverages existing architecture, so everything needed to control the engines is already on them. All we needed to do was create the joystick and develop the interface with the engines. We don’t have to put hydraulic pumps in the boat, or deal with all sorts of extra rigging.” Evinrude’s iDock system is compatible with new Evinrude G2 150 HO, 200, 200 HO, 250 and 300 models. Unfortunately, it won’t retrofit to existing G2 engines. For more information, visit EVINRUDE.COM. — By Craig Ritchie

Selfridge ANGB is hosted by the Michigan Air National Guard’s 127th Wing, a dual Mission Design Series unit, which operates and maintains the 9,000-foot-long runway used for Department of Homeland Security operations and active/reserve Department of Defense service components training. A variety of parallels enfolded at the Fifth Annual Maple City Grand Prix tunnel boat race, held June 9-11, 2017 in LaPorte, Indiana. Formula One racer Greg Foster from Orange, California was driving his Dillard Financial Solutions-sponsored Italian-built DAC hull in a Heat race. After exiting turn six on the Stone Lake racecourse, Foster encountered Jim Robb’s boat and roostertail spray. Sponsonto-sponson contact was made. Foster was able to drive out of this high-speed situation and continued on to capture the F1 victory. During the Formula Lights race, driver #93 R.J. West, #11 Chris Hagerl R.J. West from Manteca, California, was piloting his Skeleton Racing-sponsored Composite Craft hull in a Heat race. As West was exiting turn six, he was able to catch up to race leader Chris Hagerl. Both drivers came dangerously close to each other by “trading paint” as they rubbed sponson to sponson. West was able to pass Chris to win the race. No injuries were reported from these “bump and run” incidents. Both Foster and West won their races in their perspective classes, both drivers were from California, and both incidents happened on the same part of the racecourse. As baseball great Yogi Berra once said, “It’s Deja Vu all over again.” This was the first stop of the 2017 season for the USF1 Powerboat Tour Series for the Formula One and Formula Lights tunnel boat classes. — Story and photography by Paul Kemiel

In June, the U.S. and Canadian governments released the “State of the Great Lakes 2017” report, an assessment of the health of the Lakes. Overall, the Great Lakes are assessed as “fair and unchanging,” according to the report; however, the “Nutrients and Algae” and “Invasive Species” sections were ranked as “unchanging to deteriorating” and “poor/deteriorating,” respectively, particularly for Lake Erie. “While progress to restore and protect the Great Lakes has been made, including the reduction of toxic chemicals, we are still facing challenges with issues such as invasive species and nutrients,” the report says. You can read the full report at BINATIONAL.NET.

New things like Kids Club and all its fun activities welcome young families,” he says. “The best part is that everything is right here for us when we arrive for a few days. It’s not far from our home but it feels a world away.” The club’s location on Lake St. Clair is ideal for venturing towards the Great Lakes, but Schaden says once they arrive they don’t go too far. “We come here to kick back and get away from the daily grind, and once we get here there is no reason to leave,” he says. “We enjoy the big events, like the Fourth of July Cart Parade, and simple things for the kids, like the Turtle Race Relay. It’s peaceful and such an oasis here.” Another special program for kids is The Youth Sailing Program, and popular areas on-site include the catch-andrelease fishing ponds, the bonfire pit and the dog run for furry friends. General Manager Wendy Anglin oversees this destination and agrees this island sanctuary has a unique charm. “The Old Club is a world seemingly hours away, yet is accessible by boat in minutes from Detroit and is a reasonable drive from several surrounding communities,” she says. “With boathouses, Jet Ski garages, a Ritz hotel, a nine-hole executive golf course, an Olympic-size swimming pool and Jacuzzi, clay tennis courts, a trap shooting range and boardwalk homes that date back to the turn of the century, there is a tremendous diversity of offerings for our members. It’s a magical place!” Abundant amenities The River Bar is a favorite stop, but The Dining Room, the Grill Room and the poolside dining pavilion also offer food classics that members expect, as well as monthly menu changes that follow a simple philosophy: “Fresh is always

fresh breeze rustles the sparkling water as a variety of seafaring vessels depart from The Old Club for the day on spectacular Lake St. Clair. A premier island resort and yacht club, The Old Club is the oldest recognized yacht club on the Great Lakes. It offers glorious harbors, a comfortable clubhouse, spacious dining and meeting facilities, flexible special event spaces, a welcoming hotel for overnight guests, well-maintained and privately owned residences, and, of course, all kinds of outdoor sporting activities for those who enjoy a bit of friendly competition. The Old Club’s past is long and steeped in tradition. It was first conceptualized in a downtown Detroit bookstore in May 1872, just seven years after the Civil War ended. Four sportsmen set in motion plans for a club advocating mutual enjoyment and comradeship. A tract of land was purchased adjacent to Harsens Island, where the fish were hungry for bait and all manner of waterfowl flew overhead. Only accessible by water its first 68 years, the St. Clair Fishing and Shooting Club of Detroit (as it was then known) soon became a popular stop for the Great Lakes steamer Tashmoo, which ferried passengers to the site beginning in 1890. A bridge built in 1940 finally provided access from the island. In 1902, the club was reorganized as The Old Club and the rest, as they say, is history. There is no way those four men could have imagined their club would become, as many refer to it, “the best kept secret in Michigan.”

better, and show respect to the products you are using on an item-to-item basis,” says Anglin. “We take great pride in creating everything from scratch in the kitchen, and do our own butchery and fish cleaning when we can.” Just steps away, a large, onsite organic garden is maintained by the grounds team, providing fresh herbs, lettuce, heirloom tomatoes and other produce throughout the season. The Old Club is also a community with 50 summer residences on the grounds, including The Lodges, Bay Point Condominiums and, of course, those charming and colorful cottages overlooking the river on the boardwalk. Longtime resident Commodore Robert (Bob) Amori who, along with his wife, Lisa, lives at The Lodges says The Old Club has been a wonderful experience for his entire family. “My daughter Julia was raised here, and we have formed many lifelong relationships we treasure.” Amori says that although cruising and fishing are still some of his favorite activities, he also appreciates the attention given by the club to invite all ages to this place. “Now it’s all about kayaks, sailboats and kids activities — even food on the menu has changed,” he says. “It’s been a good thing.”

Boardwalk Cottages

Amori, his wife and daughter all share birthdays in July and celebrate it at the club. “It’s been great to introduce our friends from outside The Old Club to those we have here,” he says. “We’ve had some pretty sizable parties.” When needed, there are also accommodations for members and their guests at The Ritz, with a full-service spa onsite for those needing special pampering. Changes have come since those early days, but it’s still all about being close to nature. It’s about the glorious water and fishing along the shoreline of Lake St. Clair, with its access to the Great Lakes. It’s about the marine life that swims below, the wildlife that nest and lives nearby, and watching the seasons arrive while enjoying every moment. Those four gentlemen who imagined this place 145 years ago might be surprised to see what it has become, but at the end of the day, their vision hasn’t changed. This is an inspiring and special place to be, and it’s even better shared with friends and family. ★

WAYPOINT by Marty Richardson

Georgian Bay, Ontario: PT. 3 Cruising from Pointe au Baril to Britt, Killarney and Tobermory. In part three of a three-part series, Marty Richardson concludes her guided tour around Georgian Bay.

T

he next section of Georgian Bay’s rugged north shore is delightfully remote and unpopulated — a gunkholer’s dream with serene anchorages (see sidebar on p. 27). Towns are few and far between, so you’ll want to fill up on fuel and provisions when you get the opportunity.

Pointe au Baril Moving along the stunning shoreline, we stop next at Pointe au Baril, about 36 miles northwest of the town of Parry Sound. The town was named long ago when fur traders from Penetanguishene lost a canoe with a barrel full of whisky on the point; the next spring, another group of stranded fur traders found the barrel, had a party, and then hoisted the empty barrel on a pole as a location marker. Later, a white-sided, red-roofed lighthouse served the same purpose — minus the celebration. Here’s a local love story: Pointe au Baril’s last lightkeeper, Carl Madigan, who served starting in 1949, married 17-year-old Emmaline in 1954. She joined him in keeping the light, and continued to do so after Carl’s passing in 1977 until the light was decommissioned and automated in 1983. Emmaline was displaced and distraught, as she had said she’d rather be at the lighthouse than any other spot in the world. In 2000, the township and the Pointe au Baril Islander’s Association, which had acquired the light, asked Emmaline to return to the lighthouse. She did so and now provides summer lighthouse tours to this day; she recently celebrated her 80th birthday. Just take your dinghy to the small day dock adjacent to the picturesque lighthouse for a special tour of Emmaline’s true love. There are actually two Pointe au Barils: The point itself, with the lighthouse, and Pointe au Baril Station, about 5 miles up the channel and adjacent to the Trans-Canadian Highway, where you’ll find most of the population. Pointe au Baril is prime cottage country, offering provisions at Pointe au Baril Station’s combination grocery and hardware store, beer store and LCBO (liquor store). The Station also has two restaurants, The Haven and Harbour View Patio Café. You can also try one of the town’s chip wagons. If you want a dockside break from anchoring, marinas in the area offer gas-only and transient dockage for boats up to 30 feet. The marinas are located along the channel between Pointe au Baril and Pointe au Baril Station. Desmasdons Boatworks has 180 total slips with 12-foot depths, and an in-house

Favorite Gunkholes Watch your depth sounder and charts carefully in the magnificent array of channels, and you’re in for a gunkholing treat; you’ll have your choice of seemingly unlimited — and often empty — anchorages. Favorites include: The Bustard Islands, a group of 600 islands and a maze of channels, are about 26 miles northwest of Pointe au Baril and about 39 miles east of Killarney at the top of Georgian Bay. Once a center of the area’s commercial fishing industry, the Bustard’s trio of lighthouses now guides recreational mariners. The anchorages are a favorite of Georgian Bay boaters and feature stunning beauty and interesting wildlife, including black bears, minks, foxes and loons.

For more secluded natural beauty, just west of Killarney is a beautiful anchorage called Covered Portage. At the entrance, put a lookout on the bow to watch for rocks, keep to the deeper water, and you’ll find a gem of a protected natural harbor. A bit further up the channel, the fiord-like passage, Baie Fine, leads to a famous gunkhole known as The Pool. Many years ago, we saw the large yacht Chanticleer moored here, owned by the founder of Evinrude Outboards and his movie-star wife, Frances Langford. The ship served as the power source for their small log cabin on shore. While in The Pool, drop an anchor and then take a line to shore to explore the breathtaking landscape.

coffee and Ontario-made Kawartha Dairy ice cream shop called Beans & Scoops. Beacon Marine has 90 slips total, while Payne Marine has a fuel dock and full service center. The Station is the center of activity in season. This summer, along with thousands of Canadian cities, the town celebrated the country’s 150th birthday on Canada Day, July 1. Festivities included a pancake breakfast, a triathlon swim, a run and paddle, silent auctions, a kid zone, performances by the Ontario Provincial Police Band, swimming and paddling races and a premier showing of “Pointe to the East,” a new video history of Pointe au Baril. The third weekend in July is Pointe au Baril’s annual Lobster Fest, and Arts on the Bay Dinner Theater is held throughout the summer in the community center. A real gem of the Pointe au Baril area lies just offshore: The Ojibway Club Resort, which is accessible only by boat on the 42-acre Ojibway Island. Tucked among the tall pines, a turreted Victorian building was constructed in 1906 as a hotel that hosted guests in linen suits, long dresses and summer hats who arrived by steamer and private launches. After 60 years, with hotel business declining, the hotelier decided to sell. Area cottagers had become so fond of the club that they stepped forward to buy it and formed a private club. Today, members meet on the spacious veranda for coffee, ice cream, bridge, book club discussions and to view the annual Islander’s Junior and Senior Regattas. Local youth are hired every summer to run the club’s grocery store, gift shop, post office and kids camp, which offers swimming, sailing, kayaking, tennis, and arts and crafts. The club offers a dining room and four classic rental cottages, which include membership privileges. My cookbook collection includes “Cottage Cookbook,” an album of family recipes compiled by Ojibway Club members and area cottagers, with proceeds to benefit the upkeep of the historic Victorian structure. Britt Traveling west about 26 miles, our next stop is Britt, at Byng Inlet. Once a sawmill town and later a coal depot, the town offers deep-water docking and hard-to-find gas and diesel at Wright’s Marina, with 115 slips for boats up to 105 feet, and at St. Amants Waterfront Inn & Marina, with 70 slips

for boats up to 60 feet. The latter also offers a handy grocery, liquor store and hotel, as well as an on-site restaurant. For dessert, stroll the winding waterfront road to Ice Cream On the Rocks for more local Kawartha Dairy ice cream. Killarney Our next stop, Killarney, about 65 miles west, is known as the gateway to Lake Huron’s famed North Channel. A French fur trader and his Anishinabek wife first settled the town in the 1820s and established a trading post. Framed by the gleaming white quartzite LaCloche Mountains and Killarney Provincial Park (see sidebar on p. 28), Killarney was accessible only by boat until 1962, when the first access road was built. The area remains a boater’s dream destination — if you stick to the charts to avoid numerous rocks and shoals approaching the area from both the east and west. The harbor is actually a channel separating George Island from Killarney on the mainland. Be advised, the channel is also used as a floatplane landing area, so remember to look up as you approach by boat. Almost 200 transient slips are available at the area’s marinas. Two favorite stops, Sportsman’s Inn Resort and Marina and the 1940s Killarney Mountain Lodge (both of which offer gas and diesel), are owned by the same group, which has recently invested significantly in major renovations. It’s full steam ahead at Killarney Mountain Lodge, with 30 transient slips and an upscale Bistro featuring live music by international cabaret star Andy Lowe. After a delicious dinner of draft-battered pickerel or the rainbow trout tower with sun dried tomato polenta, sweet oats and wildflower honey drizzle, I like to retire to my favorite watering hole, the Carousel Lounge, where I can put my feet on the hearth of the circular fireplace and enjoy a nightcap and popcorn for dessert. Sportsman’s Inn, with 140 slips, can accommodate boats up to 100 feet. Their Aveda Spa, across the channel, offers relaxing facials, manicures, pedicures and massages. Fine dining of “whitefish caught this morning” can be enjoyed in the stately dining room, or you can opt for the more casual atmosphere of the pub and dockside patio. You can even have dinner delivered to your boat. Roque’s Marina

DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier

Seal the Leak Tips on how to repair inflatables.

Safety first! ■ Don’t smoke or work around open flames. ■ Wear appropriate safety gear and clothing. ■ Always work in a wellventilated area.

A typical Hypalon repair kit includes patch material, glue, sand paper, roller, and instructions.

Once you find the leak, mark it with a felt pen and continue searching.

lthough modern materials are longer lasting and tougher than ever, any boat that uses air tubes — from dinghies to rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) — can develop leaks. Damage often occurs during everyday maneuvers, such as docking, beaching or simply rubbing against a barnacleencrusted pylon. The good news is the majority of these leaks are small holes, punctures or tiny cuts that can be easily repaired by the owner with an inexpensive kit available from the dinghy manufacturer or at most marine retail stores. Before you can repair your inflatable, you have to find out if it’s constructed of PVC or Hypalon. The glues, solvents and method of repair are very different for each material. Failure to match them correctly can cause the patch to fail or actually damage the tube material. While you will always want to follow the repair instructions provided by your dinghy’s manufacturer and use the solvents, glues and cleaners they recommend, here are some general tips for most any inflatable repair. General repair tips 1. Unless the damage is blatantly obvious, the first step is to find the leak. Fully inflate the tubes and brush a solution of dishwashing soap and water over the inflatable one section at a time. Soap bubbles indicate a leak. When you spot a leak, mark it with a felt tip pen and continue looking, as there may be more than one. 2. Next, cut a suitable-sized patch for the hole. Round off the edges of the patch to reduce the chance of snagging and to improve the overall appearance of the repair. For smaller punctures, the patch should extend beyond the hole 1 inch in all directions — increase this to 2 inches for cuts or tears. Rips or holes larger than 1 inch or those located within 2 inches of a seam should be repaired using both internal and external patches, ideally installed by a certified repair facility. If that’s not an option and emergency repairs are needed, larger splits or those with jagged edges can be stitched up with heavy-duty needle and thread, both to add strength and keep the edges aligned while patching. The Barton ClamSeal (BARTONMARINE.COM/PRODUCTS-THECLAMSEAL.ASP) is another good option for emergency repairs. 3. Clean the area to be repaired thoroughly with a stiff bristle brush and a solution of soap and water. If old glue is present, it will have to be completely removed either by sanding, scraping or carefully grinding with a Dremel or similar rotary tool. Once dry, wipe both the patch and repair surface with a clean cloth dampened with the appropriate solvent (MEK for PVC; Toulene or acetone for Hypalon) to remove surface oil and grease. 4. the patch in place and trace around it with a pencil. Tape off the repair area with masking tape. This makes the repair look neater and protects the surrounding area from excess glue, scuffing during surface preparation, etc. 5. Give Hypalon a light sanding with 180-grit paper to remove all shiny areas from both the fabric patch and the area of the dinghy you traced out in step 4. Stay inside the taped area. Never sand PVC. 6. Wipe again with solvent (do this for the patch, as well). Wait 10 minutes after this second solvent wipe before gluing. 7. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, apply adhesive to the marked area and the back of the patch with a stiff, short bristle glue or paint brush, one suitable for use with lacquer (natural hair for example). Two-part contact cement requires time for the solvent to evaporate, meaning both patch and tube should be only slightly tacky prior to assembly. For best results, glue out of direct sunlight at a temperature between 64 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit with less than 70 percent humidity. 8. Once the adhesive has reached the proper tackiness, start from one edge and carefully lay the patch onto the glued area. Make sure that the patch is in the correct position before the surfaces come into contact; most adhesives will be a contact type, meaning the patch will stick as soon as it touches the surface of the dinghy. 9. Once in place, press out all air bubbles and wrinkles (from the center of the patch outward) using a hard roller or large tablespoon. This pressing also ensures the patch has good contact with the tube. 10. Remove the tape and rub off any excess adhesive with the appropriate solvent or cleaner. 11. Wait at least 24 hours before inflation and use — 48 if at all possible. Inflatable-saving tips 1. Keep your inflatable inflated! Soft or under-inflated tubes promote seam separation, chafe and abrasion. 2. Protect your dinghy from the sun. You can dramatically extend the life of your inflatable with custom canvas covers and by applying products such as 303 Aerospace Protectant. Never use products like Armor All, as they prevent repair patches from sticking. 3. Keep a couple of small fenders on-board to help keep your tender from banging against concrete walls, rickety docks and the like. A small stern anchor is also handy to keep your dinghy away from rough docks. ★

Selecting a VHF handheld radio.

G

PHOTOS BY GLENN HAYES

etting on-board a boat and pulling away from the dock can be a great escape from everyday life, as well as a good way to cut communications with an otherwise hectic schedule. You can turn your cell off and forget about your day-to-day troubles as you head into the blue abyss. However, relying on that cell phone to communicate with others while afloat is not always even possible. And while having a fixed-mount VHF on-board is always a good idea, it may not always be convenient or possible to use. Having a handheld VHF gives boaters the ability to communicate freely without the confines of cellular coverage or being tied to a hard-wired VHF radio. It can be not only a convenience but also a lifesaver and an important part of onboard safety equipment. There are many benefits to having a handheld VHF, the most obvious being portability. It can go with you anywhere: On-board, on the tender/dinghy, and even in the water or life raft. A handheld VHF has its own power supply (either a charger or an alkaline battery pack), so you are not at the mercy of the vessel’s power, which can be extinguished if the boat were to capsize. A handheld VHF can be an efficient and easy means of communication with bridge tenders, the Coast Guard, towing services, marinas and harbormasters, race officials and other boaters. Beneficial features Handheld VHFs do not have the transmit power of fixed-mount VHFs, which are capped at 25 watts; a handheld will transmit anywhere from 1 to 6 watts depending on the model and power setting. Handhelds also do not have the range capability of fixed-mount radios, as all VHF transmissions are line of sight. Generally speaking, where the top of the antenna can see is where it can transmit; factoring several variables, including the height of the antenna, this is usually 12 to 20 miles for a fixed-mount radio and 3 to 8 miles for the handheld variety. Again, a vessel with both fixed and handhelds aboard is ideally equipped. The redundancy of a second radio is always prudent. When looking for a handheld VHF, you should ask yourself what features would benefit you the most. Many of today’s radios are chock-full of bells and whistles, and some may prove more useful to you than others. You may find the simplest and least expensive models will serve your needs, while other boaters may see the benefits in more expensive, feature-rich models. Many radios, such as the top-end but reasonably priced Icom M93D and the Standard Horizon HX870, will float when dropped and will flash an LED strobe, making them easy to find in the water. Another feature these two radios share is a built-in GPS. This feature not only can serve as a backup GPS on-board but also allows the

radios to possess Digital Selective Calling (DSC) capability. By pressing the DSC button under a protective cover, the radio will then transmit an automatic mayday signal along with your position — something very handy when you’re in an emergency situation. The built-in GPS also allows you to navigate directly to a DSC distress call transmitted by others, as well as to waypoints entered into the unit’s memory. Other considerations Another handy feature on modern radios such as those mentioned above is a large and clear LCD display that not only shows you the channel you’re on but can also display a wide range of data. Battery power and type should also be a consideration. Most have Li-ion batteries that do not develop a “memory” like other varieties, so you can charge them at any stage in their cycle. Keep in mind, the manufacturer’s battery-use ratings are based on specific ratios of transmission and standby time, and should be only used as a guide. Just remember: The higher the battery’s mAh rating, the longer the battery will operate. Some radios will also include an extra battery pack that can be loaded with alkaline batteries — a great source of backup power. Many radios will come with 12V and 110V chargers, allowing for on-board or in-vehicle charging. Still other options could include headsets, earpieces and antenna adapters to hook into an onboard antenna. Before buying your next radio, don’t just go for a basic model based on price. Spend time researching your options and you may find a radio that has useful features and accessories at a reasonable price. ★

ASK THE EXPERT by Elizabeth Altick

Plot a Path Garmin’s David Dunn explains why state-of-the-art GPS technology is ideal for Great Lakes boaters.

GARMIN.COM

LB: How is Garmin’s Panoptix different from other sonar devices?

Dunn: Garmin’s award-winning GPSMAP product line is known for its ease of use, reliability and all-in-one offerings. Available in a broad range of screen-size options — from 7 to 24 inches — these chartplotters feature preloaded mapping, built-in sonar and Wi-Fi connectivity, an internal high-sensitivity 10Hz GPS and much more.

Dunn: Panoptix All-Seeing Sonar is revolutionary sonar technology that gives mariners the ability to see all around their boat in real time, up to 300 feet. It looks forward, backward, sideways and down — even while stationary. Its multi-beam transducer utilizes a phased-array scanning sonar technology, ideal for near-shore fishermen and previously only available in the offshore commercial market.

LB: What makes Garmin’s Auto Guidance system particularly helpful for boaters on inland lakes?

Dunn: Our patented Auto Guidance technology has helped boaters take the legwork out of navigating for more than a decade. Simply sit at the dock, enter the location where you want to go, and Auto Guidance instantly searches through relevant charts to create a safe virtual pathway on the display that helps you avoid shallow water, low bridges and other charted obstructions en route. LB: How does MotionScope technology work on Garmin’s Fantom dome radar and what does it do?

Dunn: The Fantom series uses Doppler processing to detect moving targets in real time, helping users avoid collisions, find flocks of birds and track weather. Upon detection, MotionScope highlights moving targets on the radar display with an easy-to-see color so users can navigate around other boats or severe weather, or toward fishing spots. LB: How does Fantom help anglers find these fishing spots?

Dunn: Auto Bird Gain is a unique feature that lets mariners easily locate flocks of birds at the water’s surface, indicating where plentiful fish may be. ELIZABETH ALTICK specializes in recreational marine, cultural and humaninterest subjects. She was formerly executive editor of a recreational boating magazine.

|

LB: What makes Fantom easy to use?

Dunn: Fantom allows mariners to see moving targets instantaneously, again thanks to MotionScope, which takes the guesswork out of radar by identifying targets with a different color based on if they’re approaching or moving away from you.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

LB: How can it be mounted?

Dunn: We offer several mounting solutions, including on the transom, trolling-motor and thru-hull. LB: Why is it important for Garmin’s cartography to remain strictly in-house?

Dunn: Having our cartography in-house allows us to be more nimble with updates and adds an extra layer of quality control. We invest heavily in our own surveys and have an entire department at our headquarters dedicated to cartography. It’s invaluable to not be at the mercy of another company for data. LB: How do Garmin’s VHF radios help in an emergency?

Dunn: Our VHF radios have Class D DSC functionality, which may improve your chances of a rapid rescue. When paired with a Garmin chartplotter, your position and a series of distress messages will be sent to the Coast Guard if the SOS button is activated. LB: In general, what makes Garmin’s products easy to install and user-friendly?

Dunn: Garmin was recently named Manufacturer of the Year for the second year in a row by the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA), an honor given to the most recognized marine electronics company for support of products in the field. Part of Garmin’s philosophy is to engineer and sell products that are easy to install and easy to use. To that end, we include everything in the box that a customer needs to use the product and follow NMEA 2000 standards. ★

What’s SUP?

Stay safe on a stand-up paddleboard.

D

ecades ago, popular paddlecraft included canoes and kayaks made of wood or aluminum. Today, paddlecraft are used in every type of water; they are available in different sizes and materials, offer hidden storage, and are popular for fishing and hunting. The latest craze in paddlecraft is the stand-up paddleboard (SUP), which is inspired by surfboards. From 2006-2015, U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) statistics indicate that 26 percent of all water deaths involved paddlecraft. To ensure safer practices, every sport utility boat — including rowboats, skull boats, canoes, kayaks and SUPs — should meet USCG standard safety requirements, and riders should wear a specific USCG-approved life jacket. Oars and paddles should be in great shape, and a pump or bailer should be available. Lines should be in good condition, and a helmet is required for white water. Other things like a first aid kit, knife and repair kit are also important to have on-board. A compass, GPS and even navigation charts will help to find the best areas for entering and exiting the water safely. Because SUPs are different, they should be serviceable, have a sound device, a white light/distress signal, and users should wear a specialized life jacket. Don’t forget a hat and sunglasses. A marine radio or cell phone on-board is also recommended. Other items should be stored within a life jacket or inside a wearable backpack. Sarah Spiegler from Shaker Heights, Ohio, is an ACA Kayak (level 1) and ACA SUP (level 1) instructor, Wilderness First Responder, and instructor at Beaufort Paddle Co. in Beaufort, North Carolina. She offers safety tips for paddleboarders. What mistakes do SUP users make and even repeat? “Not wearing a leash or life jacket. When recreational paddleboarders become more serious about paddling and move into racing, often their paddle is too long, which can cause shoulder injuries.” What other things are helpful? “Water, snacks and sunscreen! Equipment (board and paddle) should be appropriate for your skill level, body type, and desired activity and/or location for paddling that day. Bring a sense of adventure; every day out on the water is different.” Apply sunscreen every 90 minutes; water reflects sunlight upward so exposure comes from all directions. Should you exercise before going on a SUP? “Stretching is usually a good idea for most physical activities. Paddleboarding is an awesome fitness activity because it is a whole body workout. Paddleboarding also allows you to see the

water and land from a higher and different perspective than when you are in a kayak.” Is weather a safety factor? “Always check the wind and weather forecast before you go out. This is important when going on the water on any vessel. Beginner paddleboarders will often find it easier to go against the wind and waves at the beginning of the trip so that the return trip is not as strenuous.” Watch out for thunder and lightning, and be prepared for getting out of the water quickly. What would you say is the most dangerous aspect of going on the water? “Any activity that takes place in the water — boating, kayaking, sailing, swimming — always has inherent risk. Getting back on a SUP after you fall in is quite easy; however, you do need to be prepared with the proper clothing if you fall in. The danger of hypothermia always exists on the water.” Appropriate shoes and quick-drying clothing that retains body heat are recommended. Avoid wearing cotton clothing. Where are the best areas to paddleboard? “Stay out of boat channels. Stay close to shore if possible; there is usually less current, wind and boats by the shore. Yellow and red colored clothing is easier for boaters to see on the water than blue and green colors.” Scan and avoid hazards like overhanging trees, rocks, low bridges and submerged items. Approach boat wakes or waves head-on or at a slight angle to avoid capsizing. Beaufort Paddle Co. recommends that first-time SUP users take a class and even a local tour in a designated area with a knowledgeable instructor. When renting any paddlecraft, ask for an approved life jacket, a working vessel and appropriate paddles. Weight restrictions might also apply for different models. Expect to sign a release form. Finally, let someone know your route and expected times for leaving and returning. ★

ea-Doo knows a lot about value, and the company’s all-new GTI SE delivers smiles in abundance at a great price. This engaging three-up PWC checks all the boxes: It’s fun to ride, comfortable enough for all-day enjoyment, and priced to be affordable for most families. The GTI SE comes packed with a boatload of standard features, starting with Sea-Doo’s Intelligent Throttle Control. Select between Touring, Sport and Eco modes to tailor the ride to your taste and comfort level. Touring mode offers a comfortable ride, while the Sport setting boosts acceleration for lightning-quick hole shots. Choose the Eco mode and still enjoy all the fun while getting the best possible fuel economy. Speaking of value, the GTI SE also comes with Sea-Doo’s Intelligent Braking and Reverse function as standard equipment. Squeezing the left handlebar lever puts the GTI SE in reverse, making it much easier to back off a beach or move from the dock. Pulling the lever while running at speed applies braking power in a steady and controlled curve, allowing the driver to stop quickly without being thrown forward. Variable Trim

— also standard — allows riders to adjust the boat’s attitude for a more comfortable ride in different water conditions. Since families like to have fun on the water, the GTI SE offers a huge 30.8-gallon storage capacity, spread between two compartments: A larger one located up in the bow and a smaller second compartment for wallets, cell phones and other valuables, positioned just below the handlebars. “The GTI 90-hp is ideal for the person or family that simply wants to get out on the water, but with more comfort and storage than Sea-Doo’s smallest model, the SPARK, offers,” says Sea-Doo Spokesman Tim McKercher. “Its lightweight PolyTec hull and compact Rotax 900 ACE engine give it a sporty ride that’s also stable and dry.” The three-rider touring seat includes rear grab handles for additional security. You’ll also find a retractable boarding ladder on the GTI SE, making it easier to climb on after a swim. With its 90-hp 900 HO Rotax ACE engine and lightweight PolyT ec hull, the GTI SE easily hits top speeds in the low 40 mph range, delivering plenty of smiles per mile. ★

I

n boating, there’s a saying that infers, “It’s not about the destination; it’s about the journey,” of which I can attest. But what if the journey can be inclusive of a destination? I’m speaking of cruising aboard the Tiara Yachts F44 Flybridge. Introduced in the fall of 2016, the F44 has all the creature comforts and “bells and whistles” a cruiser needs. Just being aboard the F44 is a destination unto itself. Rest assured that this is not another sportfish, convertible model (Tiara already has those in a 39- and 48-foot size). No, this is a cruising-man’s yacht, a “let’s go and see what’s past the horizon,” pulse-quickening kind of boat. Why? Because Tiara listened to its owners and decided the market was ready for a new platform.

Details, details

With more than 60 years of watercraft building experience, Tiara fusses about the little things. From an oversized but watertight engine room light switch (because anything else just wouldn’t do), to the umpteen screw-down wire loops and an overbuilt flybridge staircase that uses channel aluminum with welded plates for the teak floating steps, Tiara’s focus on quality and craftsmanship is evident throughout. Thanks to a sweeping sheer that steps aft, a symmetricallyblended house/bridge design, and a large but not overzealous flybridge/arch/hardtop combo, the F44 has that headturning “dock appeal.” Boarding from the large swim platform, there are dual entryways to the aft deck. There’s a full bench seat across the transom with a foldout teak dining table. The aft transom’s Kenyon electric BBQ grill, Isotherm fridge and voluminous garage (perfect for fenders and covers) are all accessed from the platform.

The main event

Blending is also evident when the dual sliding doors are opened: The aft deck leads right into the galley and salon area, creating a full-use main deck. To delineate the spaces a bit, the F44 has the galley aft as a central serving location, and a raised deck for the salon seating and coffee/dining table. Tiara didn’t skimp on details in the galley, including low-profile cabinets, built-in Isotherm fridge/freezer drawers, a Sharp convection microwave oven, a recessed Kenyon two-burner cooktop with a blending counter cover insert, and a deep stainless sink with a cover. Forward up two steps are the port L-settee and hi-lo foldout, rotating table. Across is a raised bench/lounge seat. All seats have great visibility outward and are comfortable at cruising speed. Finished with hardwood teak flooring, Wenge wood cabinets, marbled Corian counters and leather furniture, the F44 can certainly be enjoyed without ever leaving the dock.

At the con

Leave the dock you must, and there’s no better place to depart than from the flybridge. There’s an optional lower helm station, but why take away from the great living space below? Enjoy the protection of the flybridge’s fully integrated hardtop, secured by the arch and forward-mounted, multi-point, tubular supports; this thing isn’t going anywhere. Tiara created a functional layout with an aft U-settee with a hi-lo teak table that converts into a large sunpad, a forward port L-settee next to the helm, and an entertainment center with an Isotherm fridge and sink. Glenn, marketing director of S2 Yachts (parent company of Tiara and Pursuit yachts) and “knower” of everything Tiara, did a little magic for me as we cruised at about 20 knots. Glenn jockeyed the joystick over to make a tight turn, not using the steering wheel. The F44 leaned into the curve instantly, holding position until the joystick retuned to center. And then he did it the other way. Yup, that’s driving with the joystick, thanks to Volvo’s Joystick Driving mode. Sticks were designed to support improved close quarter maneuvering. Now they can control the whole ride. Coupled with twin Volvo Penta IPS 600 packages with 435-hp each, our ride cranked up to 28.8 knots (one direction), which is exhilarating for a 32,500-pound yacht. Tiara outfitted this F44 with the Glass Cockpit, a collaborative program with Garmin that integrates each electronic component, including radar, sonar, engine data, multimedia and more onto multiple displays with one-touch controls. An added benefit is the clean, uncluttered helm it creates.

More details

The F44 has accommodations below in two staterooms. Forward is the master with a center pedestal berth, a cedar locker, a 24-inch flat TV, teak flooring and a private entrance to an ensuite head. The VIP is midship with twin berths, carpeting and access to the day head. Wide side decks, railings and grabrails seemingly everywhere, forward sunpad/lounge seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Fusion stereos and speakers, and many more features make the F44 the place to be. Speaking of details, Tiara goes so far as to include a wealth of specific information in their standard and options listing, which is great for this writer to peruse and is almost certainly a game changer for potential customers. Tiara Yachts F53 Flybridge

Looking for more in a yacht but with the Tiara level of craftsmanship? Then the Tiara F53 Flybridge is for you. Like the F44, it’s well appointed and smartly laid out. The F53 has more of everything: More living space, storage space, stretch-out-and-relax space, and friends and family space. Up top, the helm is centered with a large bench seat that includes an armrest console housing the Volvo Penta joystick controller and chartplotter mouse. No need to be hunched over to reach the helm controls. Just sit back and let the joystick drive. Padded seating flanks the helm on both sides and in front of the helm. The aft U-settee with hi-lo teak table converts into a sunpad. Tiara located the F53’s galley aft on the main deck, again being the central point when the aft doors are opened. With four Isotherm fridge/freezer drawers to starboard next to the wine chiller and a three-burner cooktop, microwave and sink to port, there’s plenty of counter and provisioning space for an extended cruise. It’s easy to energize the yacht, as Tiara has centralized the battery buttons and shore/gen buttons in a console. Come aboard, press the power system you need, and services that have breakers on come to life. It doesn’t get much simpler than that. To switch a breaker, tilt up the starboard settee and reveal the breaker panel contained in a protective box. Some eye-opening features include dual ottoman seats for the aft deck teak foldout table, a Seakeeper 9 Gyro stabilizer, a cockpit joystick control, a hydraulic platform, lights in cup holders, a recessed salon TV and skylights for lower areas. Next to the port L-settee in the salon is a club chair that converts from an aft-facing seat to a forward-facing seat thanks to the backrest that lifts and moves fore/aft. Below, the forward VIP stateroom has a queen-size berth that can split and separate into two berths. There’s also a midship full-beam master SpecificationS with an ensuite head. Opt for a LOA: 54'6" third stateroom with bunk berths. Beam: 15'11” The F53 sports twin Volvo Draft: 4'5" Penta IPS II 950 diesels with 725 hp that top out just over 33 knots — a bit faster than the F44, but these bigger blocks drink the gojuice a bit more, too. Look at the F53 if size matters but space does, too.

BOAT TEST

I

wish airlines would pay as much attention to seating as Four Winns has on its new HD 220 Outboard model. Four Winns makes quite the claim, boasting, “The comfort-ride seat may be the most comfortable marine seat ever.” After another grueling flight to sea trial this boat (and I happen to have more than a million miles with Delta alone), I was eager for just about any seat other than a plane’s. Four Winns spent the winter layup experimenting with a new formula of Aquaflex vinyl upholstery, foam thickness and ultravioletresistant threads for secure and tight stitches. After numerous prototypes, Four Winns put all its research and findings together to create comfort-ride seating. The secret? A distinctive density foam with an integrated suspension system is built to absorb the impact of crossing wakes and lake chop, while side air vents dissipate heat, keeping things cool. Soft, forgiving and greatly improved upon over previous years, these seats live up to their claim for a sportboat of this size and price.

GET COMFORTABLE With room for 10, nearly every seat on-board adds comfort and back support thanks to plush bolsters made from the same comfort-ride

material. What’s remarkable is how Four Winns managed to engineer the motionabsorbing seating without giving up their clever under-seat storage. As experienced boaters know, you can never have enough hidden storage, especially with today’s Noah’s Ark trend, where “plus ones” are no longer exclusive to wedding receptions. The HD 220 OB has a trunk where a sterndrive motor normally resides. We’re talking about a huge, 5-foot by 3-foot-plus storage area for hiding just about anything. The U-shaped cockpit includes underseating room for a built-in cooler and dedicated space for a carry-on. Seating in the bow and cockpit swings up to reveal fiberglassmolded storage cubbies. Along the centerline is an in-floor ski locker with a thoughtful gas-assisted strut for easy access. At the bow, a flip-up access locker conceals a telescoping deep-reach swim ladder. Both the forward and stern ladders use the deep-reach concept, which means you get an extra rung. For those of us whose joints and bellies are out of alignment, that extra rung makes boarding a pleasure, not an oxygen-deprived chore. A major focal point and coveted seating area is the luxurious swim platform lounge. Accessed

via a walk-through transom, an aft-facing bench seat overlooks the non-skid surface swim platform. Life is sweet during coving moments or while watching the sunset thanks to two armrests offering built-in stainless steel cup holders, a stereo with smartphone connectivity and four speakers throughout the boat. Be sure to ask your dealer about the option to upgrade to JL audio speakers and subwoofers, which come with a remote and a transom display. Other luxury options include underwater lights and a porta-potti — a “must-have” if your boating destinations are void of on-land facilities. Located across from the helm seat, the enclosed head option includes a generous size mirror and a sink.

BELLS AND WHISTLES Taking a cue from Detroit’s automakers, the dash on the HD 220 OB has that luxury car feel with a hand-fitted, top-stitched upholstery wheel. Polished and easy to read gauges for fuel, oil pressure, temperature, speed, volts and more all fit nicely into the console with plenty of breathing room. With this ample space, you may consider adding the optional Raymarine A77 GPS/fishfinder with Navionics cartography. For those who boat on smaller inland lakes, the Four Winns HD 220 OB includes a standard custom-matched trailer. Exploring new bodies of water is part of discovering boating. Besides, you’ll need to store the boat during the winter, and many boaters today have the engine maintenance handled right at a dealership. Our test boat came with an optional wakeboard tower and colored Bimini top. The Turbo Swing Ski Tow is ideal for outboardpowered boats since it pivots the towline and swings across the wake; it’s a feature that tubers and skiers will appreciate. From a performance perspective, the number of passengers, amount of fuel and outboard size affects actual top-end speed. Our test boat was rigged with a 250-hp Mercury Verado XL. Depending on your dealer, the HD 220 OB can be ordered with a range of Mercury, Yamaha or Evinrude E-Tec G2 engines. We were up on plane in less than 4 seconds, and with the hammer down, we hit 50-plus mph rather quickly. This is a very stable boat, thanks to an 8-foot, 5-inch beam and the Four Winns Stable Vee-Hull, which grips the water in a turn. This feature alone is very convincing for family members new to boating who are still finding their sea legs. ★

Let the wind tangle your hair while lounging in the bow. Sit alongside the captain in the co-pilot swivel seat. Or enjoy the soothing view of the wake while relaxing on the aft-facing loungers and indulging in a light snack on the removable table. Although there are a lot of seating options spread out over the 20-foot, 10-inch boat, the captain can always be a part of the conversation. Play some tunes on the Infinity PRV 250 AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth, auxiliary and MP3 port. The color-coordinated Bimini protects the little ones from the sun’s rays. A nice feature on a boat of this size is the hand-pump faucet located near the helm. Options include synthetic teak flooring, in-dash GPS/fish finder, underwater lighting, wakeboard racks, a stainless steel grill, a porta-potti, wake tower speakers, and black painted tubes, which look sleek on the water and hide unsightly water spots.

Wisconsin-based Seven Marine creates the world’s most powerful outboards. B Y C H R I S C A S W E L L

48

AU GU S T 2 0 1 7 | L AK EL AN D B O AT I N G. C O M

T

he first versions of the Seven Marine 557-hp outboards were shiny and black, and one wag suggested they looked like Darth Vader’s helmet. That was a fair observation for more than aesthetic reasons because the Seven — like Darth — is both powerful and menacing. If there was ever an outboard motor that says something about its owner, this is it. Hang one, two or three (or more) of these on the transom and you are no longer just another skipper but an all-conquering hero of Homeric proportions. You may not be able to scale tall buildings, but wrapping your fist around the Seven throttles is like picking up Darth’s light saber.

Simple fact: The Seven Marine 557-hp was the most powerful outboard in the world when it was introduced at the 2011 Miami International Boat Show. It has since been joined by a 627-hp muscular brother, making the Seven 627 nearly twice as powerful as any other outboard on the market. Over the past few years, outboard manufacturers have responded to the horsepower race with modest increases: 250-, 300- and 350-hp. It was a civilized and genteel power battle. It took a bunch of guys in Wisconsin to rattle the marine world with a supercharged V-8 engine that not only puts out a whacking 557-hp, but 550 foot-pounds of torque, meaning you’ll need to hang on tight when you shove the throttles forward. PHOTOS COURTESY OF SEVEN MARINE

Who needs a 557- or 627-hp outboard? If you haven’t been paying attention, center console boats are getting bigger — a lot bigger. A decade ago, center consoles were considered large when they approached 30 feet in length. Today, there is a fleet of center consoles greater than 40 feet, topped by the new 53-foot Hydra-Sports 5300 Sueños that weighs in at 14 tons. Getting those big boats up and moving takes some serious umph, and the Seven outboards provide it in spades.

Big outboards are also finding their way into express cruisers, where hanging all the machinery on the stern opens up enormous space that was once taken up by inboard engines and their drive systems. And, while no one wants to think about boating maintenance, an outboard is a lot easier to work on than an inboard; you can take it off for repairs without ripping up the boat. You might expect some wild-eyed gearheads in a cluttered workshop to come up with such a crazy idea like a 557-hp engine, but the reality is actually far more interesting. Seven started as a family business in Germantown, Wisconsin, and was founded by a team with a wealth of marine power experience. Company President Rick Davis had retired after 40-plus years as an engineer and innovator, responsible for industry firsts such as the Mercury Optimax clean two-stroke direct injection outboard, the Mercury Verado and the Cummins-MerCruiser diesel Zeus pod drives. After Rick Davis retired as chief technology officer from Mercury Marine, he and his son, Eric, formed Davis Engineering. They were tinkering with various projects, including an all-terrain vehicle, when Eric saw the need for truly powerful outboards and came up with the idea for a 1,000-hp outboard. That was in 2009. Eric had watched the growing number of boats

running quad outboards and thought that a pair of very powerful outboards was a better idea. According to Eric’s younger brother, Brian, “Eric had the idea and so he had the responsibility of convincing Dad that it could work. And every objection that Dad had, Eric worked through and around.” At that point, Brian said, “If you and Dad can do it, let’s stop talking about it.” The plan clicked into place when General Motors made the decision to build the Gen IV series of powerful V-8s, which presented the ideal powerhead for their outboard, albeit not one of 1000 hp. The transmission was a problem, but Rick knew that the German ZF had built a compact transmission for a pod drive. “Outboard engines were always vertical,” Brian says. “Allaluminum engines hadn’t been in passenger cars and the pod drive solved our transmission issue, allowing the new powerful automotive engine to be fitted as an outboard.” The project was on. Brian joined the team to handle marketing and sales, and a meeting with 33 boatbuilders at the 2010 Miami Boat Show convinced them that, while some builders were wary, there was enough interest to launch the project. A prototype debuted at the 2011 Miami show.

Tell me about this big kicker

The starting point for both the Seven 557 and 627 is the Gen IV series of aluminum V-8s produced by General Motors. This is the humongous 6.2-liter supercharged engine that Cadillac drops in its CTS-V, a car that has a reputation for being a Porsche killer and which can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. This brings up an interesting point about

50

AU GU S T 2 0 1 7 | L AK EL AN D B O AT I N G. C O M

Seven Marine: They don’t build their own engines. Sure, they assemble them, but they use the readily-available General Motors V-8 to power an off-the-shelf ZF transmission, and then add very carefully selected goodies to up the horsepower ante. Wisconsin has some technically savvy suppliers, and Seven Marine sources its parts and services from more than 80 Wisconsin companies, ranging from foundry services to paint for the cowls. Locally machined Corvette motor mounts hold the husky Seven engines to their brackets; the serpentine belt is one you can buy at any auto parts store, and the steering tube bushing is from the bucket on an earth-mover. It is a remarkable synthesis of parts that allows Seven Marine to have no foundry and not even a paint booth! While the Seven outboards are production engines that run happily and heartily on 89-octane gasoline, each is a bespoke engine created with a builder and customer. Not only do the rigging and controls have to match the boat, but the color scheme (you won’t find black Darth helmets any more) will also match the customer’s choice. The Seven engine is technically a LSA 6.2-liter SC V-8 from GM’s Global Propulsion Systems in Mexico and, besides the Cadillac, it also powers the hot Camaro ZL1. The cylinder heads are switched for a sophisticated set with machined combustion chambers made by Lingenfelter Performance Engineering, a Decatur, Illinois-based company with a four-decade reputation producing performanceenhancing parts for GM cars such as Corvettes and Camaros. The lower gearcase of any outboard is always the weakest link, especially when carrying the huge torque from the Seven engines. In this case, Seven uses two pinion gears instead of one to transfer the power. Not

only is the lower gearcase strong, but it’s also nearly an inch narrower than other outboard cases, which significantly reduces the drag. The combination of the ZF transmission and the robust drive train allows smooth shifting, the ability to troll at low speeds and none of the usual “clunk” when shifting. The stainless steel exhaust headers — a double-wall system created to jewel-like precision by Custom Marine of Neenah, Wisconsin — are carefully tuned to further increase the horsepower. And, should you want to use your Seven in saltwater, you can rest assured because it has closed cooling, so no salt or raw water reaches the powerhead. That cooling system, by the way, is from a world leader in cooling and fluid handling systems: Alfa Laval. Steering is critical, and an internal steering system was created and fabricated by Latham Marine, a company with a long history of high-performance steering systems that race drivers trust with their lives. This horsepower and torque meets the sea via a pair of stainless steel props from Hering Performance, which holds numerous speed records with its products. Seven offers three different lower units: A standard for normal use, a high-speed for 100 mph boats, and, next to be available, a dual-prop counter-rotating version as well. Finally, the cowling gets a multi-step paint job at Calibre Inc. in Grafton, Wisconsin, which paints most of the custom motorcycles for Harley Davidson. Since the cowling is what most people will see, these are matched to each boat. For added styling zip, Seven owners can add the Spectra Blade LED lighting system, which provides inner lighting on the front and back of the cowl with infinite color adjustments. “We adopted the model of high-tech businesses,

which is to create a superior design, carefully control the quality of outside supplied parts, and deliver a unique product to the customer,” says Brian.

What about the 627?

The 627-hp engine starts with the same LSA 6.2-liter block, but it has what the Seven team calls a HighTurbulence Combustion Chamber that provides a consistent operating range of both horsepower and torque. They’ve added the inconel nickel-chromium exhaust valves, too. Seven has developed a proprietary Engine Control Module (ECM) that monitors the fuel injection to up the horsepower and add 50 foot-pounds of torque to boost the acceleration. But, even with the larger horsepower, the Seven 627 runs comfortably on 89-octane.

What about speed?

The first boat to run a pair of Seven Marine 557 outboards was an Intrepid 37, and Intrepid President Ken Clinton labeled the new engines as “game changers.” The Intrepid Panacea 475 tops out at 73 mph with quad Sevens, and has a cruising speed of about 60 mph. Clinton says this compares to quad Yamaha 350s that would top out at 63 mph. The trend-setting Hydra-sports 53 with quad 627s topped 69 mph. Both Hydra-sports and Seven Marine won coveted NMMA Innovation Awards for these new products. In 1907, Ole Evinrude invented a whopping 1-hp outboard that clamped on the transom of rowboats and he’s probably spinning in his grave at the sight of the new breed of Seven Marine powerhouses. Once seen as a novelty, the Seven outboards are now an essential part of the new super center console world of 40 and 50-footers. And they look way cool, too! H

y family and I cruised north along the wild Lake Superior shoreline of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (U.P.), where marinas are 30-some miles apart. We had just traveled 35 miles from Black River Harbor, and it was another 38 to the upper entry of the Keweenaw Waterway. My husband, Mark, said the wind was picking up and we should probably head into Ontonagon for the night. We had visited Ontonagon County by land a few years earlier for the annual Porcupine Mountains Music Festival held every August. It was a terrific weekend of live, eclectic music with the backdrop of beautiful mountains; we were excited to return and explore the area. The Porkies Perhaps the biggest draw to the Ontonagon area is the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, which brings more than 300,000 visitors every year. About 15 miles west of Ontonagon, it’s Michigan’s largest state park and has the tallest mountains in the Midwest, majestic and wild — especially when seen from the Big Lake. The 60,000-acre park has 90 miles of backcountry hiking trails, waterfalls, rivers, and a virgin forest of eastern hemlock and northern hardwoods. According to Bob Wild, the park’s naturalist: “The primary reason we are a park is because a group of organized citizens pushed to protect the old-growth forest found in the present-day park. They saw value in preserving a small portion of the state so future generations could see what our landscape has looked like [unaltered] for hundreds of years. Because of this effort, we have the largest old-growth northern hardwoods forest in the Midwest — if not the entire country.”

Porcupine Mountains Music Festival: August 25-27 The Porcupine Mountains Music Festival, held every August, is a three-day outdoor festival of eclectic, high-energy music. Top musicians from across the country — some folk, some not — take the main stage at the Winter Sports Complex in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Canopycovered stages are set up at the base of the hill, and folks bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on several acres of open slope. Organizers say there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Workshops are available, along with a busking barn (by audition only). The ski chalet has a restaurant, but most people bring their own coolers and drinks, and sit back to enjoy the music. The relaxed atmosphere is full of people who come for the great music in a gorgeous setting. For more information, visit PORKIESFESTIVAL.ORG.

The Keweenaw Peninsula and its rich resources — copper, fish and forests — have attracted people for 7,000 years. Ontonagon is the oldest permanent settlement on Lake Superior’s south shore. The village was founded in 1843 at the mouth of the Ontonagon River and served as a shipping port for the booming U.P. copper mining, fishing and lumber industries. The first people hammered and chiseled to get to the pure copper; later, sophisticated mines, drilling and dynamite expelled the copper. Miners in the 1800s and early 1900s worked 10-hour shifts, six days a week. In 1920, the underground mines were left vacant and the remaining copper was abandoned. At that same time, the lumber companies were clearing U.P. white pine, which was expected to last a thousand years. But 50 years later, the trees were gone and the land was left to the townships. Immigrants who came to the area for the mining bought the land for back taxes and started businesses and farms. Today, Ontonagon County is home to the descendants of the native people and immigrants who came for the natural resources and opportunities. It’s home to people who appreciate the incredible natural beauty. And it’s nestled amongst two natural giants: Lake Superior and the Porcupine Mountains.

Presque Isle River’s Manido Falls

Roxey’s

Wild recommends three scenic sites to visitors: Lake of the Clouds, Summit Peak and Presque Isle River. “All of the sites are very scenic and each could easily be a park all by itself,” he says. Lake of the Clouds, a stunning mountain lake, has a lookout easily reached by car. You can also hike trails to the lake. The Presque Isle River features three gorgeous waterfalls: Manabezho, Manido and Nawadaha Falls. The Summit Peak observation tower is one of the most visited spots in the “Porkies” for its incredible view. In mid-September, the fall color chairlift rides begin in the park, giving visitors an exceptional picture of the autumnal colors of the Upper Peninsula — from above. The park hosts other events throughout the fall to celebrate this beautiful season. Park visitors will find interpretive programs all season long. They can also take a class through the Porcupine Mountains Folk School. Renowned artists teach topics ranging from stained glass arranging and watercolor painting, to hand-forging copper bracelets and creating a Greenland-style kayak paddle. Many of the classes reflect the Scandinavian heritage of the area’s immigrants, like making a Viking weave wire-woven bracelet.

Safe harbor The Village Marina is about a quarter-mile up the Ontonagon River on the west side. The full-service, 38-slip marina with seven transient slips and day-use dockage has a hoist, a service building, a fish-cleaning station, gasoline, ice, pumpout and restrooms with showers. Once in the slip, we were eager to get on land and explore the field to the north of the marina along the riverbank, with its small playground and picnic area.

“The marina is peaceful and quiet,” says Harbormaster Don Kneisler. “It isn’t sitting right on the lake where you get the pounding of the waves. It’s a safer area.” The marina may be on the west side of the river, but most of the town’s action is on the east side. You can cross by dinghy or walk the mile into town using the Highway 64 bridge to cross the river; it has a designated sidewalk. We hadn’t brought bikes, a stroller, or a trailer along for the trip (a lesson learned for a boat trip with three little kids), so we called On-Tran (Ontonagon County Public Transit) for a ride. Within 20 minutes, the van pulled into the marina, we paid our small fee, and the cheerful driver took us over the bridge to River Street.

A walk down River Street Ontonagon may attract visitors for its scenic beauty, but there’s nothing touristy about it. While walking along River Street — the downtown area — I got the sense that we were visitors in someone’s home; the homeowners love and respect their natural environment with a fierce family pride. River Street offers a unique combination of shops, restaurants and museums. Syl’s Café, a family-style diner that one local calls “nothing but good,” serves a varied menu, including pasties, fish and chips, shakes and pies. Roxey’s Lounge has an outdoor patio, “the best burgers in a 100-mile radius,” and a full bar featuring seasonal specialty beers. If you’re really looking for something unusual, stop in at Stubbs Museum Bar. This popular local bar features a vast display of antique rifles, taxidermy and relics celebrating Upper Peninsula wilderness life. There’s even an old Wurlitzer jukebox.

For some intriguing dining options beyond River Street, Paul’s Superior View Restaurant at the base of the Porcupine Mountains boasts a Lake Superior backdrop and a local menu of pasties, flatbreads, rutabaga sliders and fish. Wednesday night is the smelt fry. In nearby White Pine, diners at Konteka Black Bear Restaurant enjoy fine dining while watching live black bears (safely behind a wall of windows). Back on River Street, there are a handful of gifts shops and galleries. The unusual Nonesuch Gallery features work by local artists, including quilted art made by the owner, Edna, and acoustic guitars made by her husband, Brad. You could spend hours here talking and browsing while drinking a great cup of coffee. We explored the Ontonagon Township Library, not far from River Street, and the True Value Hardware Store, where the kids ate ice cream while Mark stocked up on supplies for the boat. Later, we stopped by Pat’s Foods IGA, a grocery store about a mile and a half from the marina. We wandered the neighborhood streets of historic homes and made our way to the Ontonagon Township Park for a warm, windy picnic right alongside Lake Superior. The park has a campground, miles of beach with “singing sugar sand” and a huge playground. The campground office rents kayaks for those who want to paddle through Lake Superior’s waves.

Blue water fishing Our third morning in Ontonagon dawned with clear blue skies and hot, gale-force winds. On the dock, we chatted with Al Pletzke, captain and owner of Voyager Charters. He has more than 30 years of experience on the Big Lake and charters groups of up to

Fishing with Voyager Charters

six people to fish for lake trout, salmon and browns. He’d chartered a very determined group that morning; they took blue water over the stern, including 12-15 footers. “Never seen water like this in 25 years,” Pletzke says. He nodded toward Voyager, his 33-foot Carver cabin cruiser. “That boat’s stout,” he says. “Stouter than I am.” Ontonagon offers great options for fishing, from casting a line from a riverfront platform to heading out to Lake Superior. Harbormaster Don says that people will “catch their limit of walleye on the river and then go out on the Big Lake and try the big guys. It’s quite versatile right here.”

History lessons Since we weren’t going anywhere in those waves, we headed back to River Street and toured the Ontonagon Historical Museum. You can’t miss this purple building with its pink door. Inside the self-guided museum, which is staffed by volunteers, you’ll find an enormous display marking the history of mining, logging and fishing settlements in Ontonagon County. You’ll find a replica of the Ontonagon Boulder, a 3,708-pound rock of almost pure copper discovered in the 19th century on a branch of the Ontonagon River; the original is at the Smithsonian Museum. The boulder led to the Upper Peninsula Copper Rush of the 1800s. Museum visitors will also find pre-Columbian copper and stone implements, copper mining tools, a replica of the founder’s cabin, medical tools and even musical instruments. Kids can try the treasure hunt, and museum volunteers will even help with genealogical research for people with ancestors from the area.

“I always recommend people start at the Historical Museum,” says Sally Berman, president of the Friends of the Porkies and longtime Ontonagon resident. “Not only is it a wonderful museum and a comprehensive history of Ontonagon County, it’s also the headquarters for the Chamber of Commerce booth; that’s where people can get a lot of information about what’s available.” At the museum, you can also book a tour of the Ontonagon Lighthouse, which stands sentinel at the mouth of the river. It’s been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975. “The lighthouse tour is comprehensive,” Berman says. She would know, she has given many tours of the three-story, iron decagonal beacon house; the fifth order Fresnel lens is on display in the museum. “No rooms are roped off. Nothing is untouchable. The guide who will take you through will give you a lot of information not only about the Ontonagon Lighthouse itself but also the families who lived there. Our lighthouse is unique. It’s close to town, so all you have to do Special Thanks is get across the river.” Thanks to Nathan “Invincible” One of the unexpected highlights of Miller for donating the amazing the property is the original 1866 brick opening shot of Ontonagon’s outhouse. “Most lighthouses lost their Lighthouse, taken from a kite! outhouses,” Berman explains. “Ours Nathan is a landscape and was built over a permanent vault with kite aerial photographer in the the same brick as the lighthouse and Western U.P. Learn more at has been there since 1866.” When a NATHANINVINCIBLE.COM. writer from Lighthouse Digest visited,

Mining and more Visitors will find the Old Victoria Historical Site just outside Ontonagon in Rockland. Open June to October, this restored mining village highlights many historical items found in cabins of the early mining days. A Log Cabin Day Celebration is held on the fourth Sunday of June, and a craft fair is held the third Sunday in August. A nearby scenic trail brings hikers to a view of the county’s only hydroelectric dam. What trip to mining country would be complete without seeing an actual mine? In Greenland, visitors will find the historic Adventure Mine, where you can still see knobs of copper peaking through. With four options for guided underground tours, there’s something for everyone. You can walk through part or all of the first level tunnels or, for the more adventurous, try rappelling with a rope and harness to the second level of the mine. There are miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking at the Adventure Mine site, including some of the most challenging single-track trails in the Midwest leading to the top of Adventure Bluff. Come mid-July, Adventure Mine hosts the annual Miner’s Revenge Mountain Bike Race, the only race of its kind. Cyclists ride over the mountain, then through it. Organizers suggest bringing a light since a section of the underground course is in total darkness. In late June, the Ontonagon County Chamber of Commerce hosts the CopperFest Heritage Festival celebrating the natural resource. Come for copper jewelry and mine tours, and stay for the boat parade and fireworks. Finally, you can’t go wrong spending a day at the Ontonagon Township Park Beach looking for sea glass and agates, swimming, or just lying on the sugary-soft sand and listening to Lake Superior. “There is a presence to that body of water,” says Berman. “It’s a force.” On our trip, gale-force winds lasted nearly a week, socking us into the marina for five nights. When the wind subsided at last and we headed out, our departure was bittersweet. There was still a lot of Ontonagon to explore. But we can always go back; with the five nights we paid to stay in the marina, we earned two for free! ★

Holland, MI Home with “European flavor” on Lake Michigan bluff.

A

trip to France’s Loire Valley may afford you the tastes of vintage wines and the sights of stately, historic architecture; however, one thing this region lacks is the incomparable Lake Michigan views offered at this bluffside home in Holland, Michigan. With seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms and 7,201 square feet, this home rivals Loire Valley châteaus. Homeowner Julie Hutson is an antique collector and has incorporated many French and Italian artifacts into the home to create what she calls a “European flavor.” The property’s entrance is flanked with 200-year-old French château stone columns, opening up to a long driveway that winds through the property’s woodland. “The unique part of this area is there is so much vacant land and preserved bluff,” Hutson says. “The views are amazing because this is almost 4 acres of land and you have total privacy.” Enter the home and you’ll be greeted with an impressive spiral staircase and a sightline to the water. Herringbone inlaid hardwood flooring lines the foyer and leads into the

chef’s kitchen, which is outfitted with a La Cornue oven, custom cabinetry, a wine cooler in the island, and integrated appliances. The first floor also features a formal den with rich wood molding, a living room with a fireplace, a formal dining room overlooking the lake, two half baths and a master ensuite. Ascend the spiral staircase to find plenty of accommodations for guests, as well as a quiet library to relax and enjoy a book. Outside is where everyone will want to spend summer days. Take a refreshing dip in the pool, warm up in the Jacuzzi, watch the chef prepare a meal in the full outdoor kitchen, roast a marshmallow in the stone fireplace, or unwind in Hutson’s favorite space, the terrace overlooking the bluff and the lake. “There’s no saltwater or sharks, but there are sandy beaches,” Hutson says. “You’ve got the best of everything here.” The home is less than 10 minutes from a marina on Lake Macatawa and is ideally positioned between two popular harbors: Holland and Saugatuck. Exploration on the water is endless. “If I could have a place that’s heaven on earth, this is it,” Hutson says. ★

Manistee Municipal Marina Accommodating marina in lively Northern Michigan port.

T

ucked along the eastern coast of Lake Michigan sits the small Victorian port city of Manistee. But this is no “sleepy small town.” In fact, boaters who stop by Manistee Municipal Marina for a day might find themselves spending a few nights to enjoy the historic downtown, events and welcoming atmosphere. Manistee Municipal Marina is a 37-slip harbor that sits along a 1.5-mile riverwalk running east from Lake Michigan into downtown Manistee. The marina also has a 400-foot seawall for larger boats. A nice perk for sailors: The route from the lake to the marina is free of bridges. “You have a family feel when you come here to Manistee,” says Tim Kozal, harbormaster and local public safety director. “We’re very accommodating, sometimes to a fault. But we want to get people to come to Manistee.” Some of that family feeling comes from the marina’s central location, which is within walking (or biking) distance to the downtown area, the beach, theaters, museums, restaurants and more. Downtown Manistee boasts a number of old Victorianstyled buildings, including the renovated Vogue Theatre and Ramsdell Theater and Regional Center for the Arts.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Just a few steps away from the marina, boaters will also find the Saturday Morning Farmers Market, which features local produce, wine tasting, entertainment, and arts and crafts. Boaters can head to the beach over the weekend to watch cat sailing races by the Catamaran Racing Association of Michigan. Even mid-week visitors can take part in the fun with free concerts on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Boaters searching for an end-of-summer festival should check out the Grapes on the River Festival on August 12, or Hops and Props on the River on September 16, an event featuring classic wooden boats and Michigan craft beer, held at the marina. The marina building has an event space on the second floor overlooking the Manistee River Channel that can be reserved for birthday parties, family get-togethers and even small weddings. Kozal recommends making a slip reservation in advance, as this certified Clean Marina hosts a number of fishing tournaments throughout the summer, including the annual Tight Lines with Troops Event, which is a day of fishing for veterans. “Whatever needs you have, we’ll try and make it as accommodating as possible,” Kozal says. ★

CLASSIC CRAFTS by Kate Bush

Wooden explorer.

ADD YOUR BOAT

84

The 1960 Chris-Craft Conqueror, Rock On, is constructed of Philippine mahogany with teak decking. The layout forward has V-bunks and a private head, a midship galley and salon, and aft captain’s quarters with a private head and lazarette. We have owned the boat for 29 years and have always harbored Rock On at Sunset Marine in Rock Island, Illinois. We have enjoyed many cruises on the upper Mississippi, ranging from Burlington, Iowa, to LaCrosse, Wisconsin. This stretch of the river is ideal for recreational boating with many deep-water sloughs and chutes that offer good anchorages and lots of solitude. Many towns along the way offer docking for the occasional stroll about. There is something unique about how a wooden boat absorbs the engine sounds and vibrations. It’s impossible to stay awake underway in the front bunk with the forward hatch open. — Bill Stengel, Andalusia, IL Email kbush@lakelandboating.com if you have a Classic Craft with a good story to share!
