New Adventures
CHUCK WARREN
A
ugust is here, and with it a slate of new adventures — most exciting of which for the Lakeland Boating family is the announcement of Editorial Director Kate Bush and husband Matt’s new daughter, Lane Marie Bush, born June 11. It’s with loads of excitement and love that we celebrate this new beginning, wishing the Bush’s many exciting (boating) adventures to come. Speaking of new beginnings... Excelsior’s historic Miller Block Building located just blocks from Lake Minnetonka is offered new life as the beautique Hotel Excelsior — a historic restoration well worth the visit (p. 40). If you visit, keep an eye out for the model sailboat above the coffee bar — a pond skimmmer that once graced Lakeland Boating’s Walter “Bing” O’Meara’s office for 30 years. If you’re on the search for a Great Lakes’ hidden treasure, look no farther than Michigan’s Les Cheneaux Islands, a longtime recreational boating destination brimming with beauty and history (p. 42). Mainland city Hessel is home to the prestigious Antique Wooden Boat Show and where E.J. Mertaugh Boat Works was founded in 1925, becoming the first Chris-Craft dealership in the world. Fitting, as this year marks Chris-Craft’s 100th anniversary — read about how the iconic brand survived a century building some of the most iconic boats on the water (p. 36). See you on the water!
Chuck is a lifelong boater with experience on the waters of the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and the Great Lakes. During his 25-year marine industry career he has been an offshore powerboat racing team driver, chief engineer aboard a research vessel and captain of a sunset cruise. Currently a captain for hire in Holland, Michigan, Chuck lives on his 40-foot Sea Ray in the summer, while winters are split between the West Michigan lakeshore and wherever his 33-foot motorhome takes him. While the bow provides relaxation via a chaise lounge, the aft social zone shows off a rotating lounge with multiple locking positions and built-in footrest. A fold down terrace expands the cockpit and improves your access to the water. Entertainment features are found throughout, including the galley, grill and premium stereo system. Head below deck and you’ll find two sleeping accommodations; a queen island berth and mid-cabin double berth. A complete head with separate shower provides all of the appropriate overnighting or day-yachting amenities one would need. Escape aboard the 43 LE.

Lucy Some dogs love water — others just want to be near it or ride the waves. Lucy, our 2-year-old mini Goldendoodle, has been a boat dog both in sunny Florida and the Great Lakes. Please don’t ask her to swim or jump off the dock. She even refuses to retrieve a beloved toy from the lake, ocean, or pool. However, she is the first to jump aboard a boat for a sunset cruise in the Gulf of Mexico or the chilly waters of Lake Charlevoix, Michigan. Lucy acquired her name from the other famous curly haired redhead, Lucille Ball. Her name is emblazoned on our Florida 22-foot Hurricane boat. Lucy’s favorite spot is riding shotgun next to the captain or curled up in the sunshine next to Sandi on a comfy cushion. Lake Charlevoix, our summer home, finds her bounding through the sea grass to catch a field mouse. Once caught, Lucy has no idea what to do with the unfortunate mouse except to drop it for another day. The clear freshwater lake serves as her personal water bowl and a place to cool her paws. Despite her genetics suggesting a canine water lover, it’s just not her nature to swim. As long as she is near her owners, RJ and Sandi Button, she is one happy dog. Let the wind blow in her face, flop her ears or curl up next to the captain or firstmate of the 44-foot Sea Ray. She is one lucky dog to have found her place in this boating family. —Sandi and RJ Button CALLING ALL CANINE (AND FELINE) CREW!

A new project to restore 180 acres of coastal marsh within Lakeview Wildlife Management Area on Lake Ontario in Ellisburg, New York, is beginning this summer. The project aims to develop more hemi-marsh habitat, creating better breeding habitats and access for fish, birds and wildlife, while controlling invasive species and providing improved recreational opportunities for the public. “There are few coastal marshes along Lake Ontario as special as those found at Lakeview Wildlife Management Area,” says Andy Hinickle, senior manager of Wetland Conservation for Audubon Great Lakes. “The project is a win for wildlife, and a win for people who value this incredible resource.” For more information, visit NY.AUDUBON.ORG. New Research Analyzes Wakesurfing Impact to Shoreline
A new peer-reviewed paper from the Journal of Water Resource and Protection titled “Numerical Study of the Impact of Wake Surfing on Inland Bodies of Water” found wakesurfing at least 200 feet from shore in water with a depth of at least 10 feet posed minimal impact to the environment. The research further found boat wakes have little impact on shoreline compared to wind waves. “The recreational boating industry has long focused its efforts on proactive education for consumers and boat operators that maintain the health of our waterways, protect our ecosystems, and ensure the safety of everyone on the water,” says David Dickerson, vice president of state government relations at the National Marine Manufacturers Association. “This latest research from renowned researcher Cotty Fay stresses the importance of wake surfers maintaining a 200 foot setback from shorelines and docks, while operating in water of at least 10 feet of depth.” For more information visit NMMA.ORG.

Knife. Can of tire inflator and sealant (Fix-a-Flat). Portable 12V DC air compressor. Assorted plastic wire ties, including larger lengths (10 to 13 inches). ❱❱ Pair of vinyl gloves. ❱❱ Pack of pre-moistened hand wipes for clean-up after tire changes or repairs. ❱❱ Small wire brush or tool to clean corrosion from connectors and bulb sockets. ❱❱ Can of WD40 and PB Blaster. ❱❱ Small tube of marine-grade dielectric grease to help keep out moisture and maintain good electrical conductivity. ❱❱ Multimeter or circuit tester to aid in troubleshooting lights or electrical issues. ❱❱ Bearing grease. ❱❱ Extra tongue pin. ❱❱ Spare trailer tail light lens or translucent red tape for temporary repairs. ❱❱ Rain poncho. ❱❱ Extra trailer safety chain and mounting shackles. ❱❱ Spare ratchet securing strap. ❱❱ ❱❱ ❱❱ ❱❱
Towing tips
To head off potential problems while traveling, stop in a protected area to check your boat and trailer after 50 miles or so. Start by walking around your trailer and doing a visual inspection. Check the trailer hitch attachment for problems such as looseness or missing retaining pins. Check lug nuts for tightness and touch each wheel bearing to check for overheating. Inspect stern tie-down straps for snugness, the bow eye for looseness or deformation, and make sure that the winch cable or strap is tight. Never rely solely on the winch cable to secure the bow; instead, use a separate line or chain between the bow eye and trailer. Check that the safety chains are in place and criss-crossed between the tow vehicle and the trailer coupling. Safety chains should have enough slack to allow for proper turning, but not so much that they drag. As the standard S-hooks found on most safety chains have been known to jiggle loose, consider changing them to screw-pin shackles or other positively controlled fittings. Finally, check all lights (trailer and tow vehicle) for proper operation, broken lenses or loose hardware, particularly when towing at night. ★

rom blown fuses to frozen wheel bearings, “boat breakdowns” are just as likely to occur while trailering your boat as they are out on the water. When Murphy and his law strikes, nothing will get you back on the road faster than having a comprehensive trailer emergency repair kit. Trailer emergency repair kits are meant to complement your tow vehicle’s emergency road kit, which should contain items such as roadside flares and warning lights. Here’s a list of items to consider when assembling your own trailer emergency repair kit. ❱❱ A good basic tool kit. At a minimum it should include large and small socket sets and wrenches (standard and metric), assorted screwdrivers, pliers, etc. Your kit should also include any specialty tools required for your trailer. ❱❱ Hammer (to assist with removal of frozen bearings, etc.). ❱❱ Set of locking pliers (such as ViceGrip). ❱❱ Spare tire and jack. If relying on your tow vehicle’s jack, verify it will also work for your trailer (many won’t) and that it’s beefy enough to lift both boat and trailer. ❱❱ Spare hub, preferably one with bearings already installed and ready for action. ❱❱ Four-way lug nut wrench. ❱❱ Extra lug nuts. ❱❱ Spare fuses and bulbs (for both trailer and tow vehicle). ❱❱ Wire connector kit (assorted butt connectors, wire stripper, crimps). ❱❱ Spare electrical wire (for repairs on the fly). ❱❱ Electrical tape. ❱❱ Duct tape. ❱❱ Extra bearing protector. ❱❱ Grease gun and marine-grade grease. ❱❱ Sheet of Emery paper (for sanding a scarred axle spine, etc.). ❱❱ Assorted blocks of wood and a few boards (good for blocking or leveling the trailer when changing a tire). ❱❱ Spare cotter pins. ❱❱ Wheel chocks. ❱❱ Trailer hitch lock. ❱❱ A good roadside emergency kit (complete with flares, reflectors, etc.). ❱❱ Weatherproof flashlight, preferably a hands-free headset unit.

itching your tow vehicle to your trailer can be tricky at times and fraught with the thought of scratching the paint or denting a bumper with the trailer coupler. A backup camera — which is standard equipment on most new trucks and SUVs — can help if the camera is angled correctly, though many are not. For those of us using older trucks and SUVs that don’t have a backup camera or that have a built-in camera that is not adjustable, there are some good options for adding a camera that will help in hooking to and trailering your boat. There is even some nifty trailering technology on new trucks that take it a step further, if you’re in the market. Garmin offerings If you are like me and utilize an older truck as your tow vehicle, chances are you don’t have a rearview camera but you recognize how useful it can be in hitching up your boat and aiding in backing down the ramp. Fortunately for us, several effective aftermarket camera systems are available that can be added at a reasonable price. Garmin has several good offerings that can fit the bill. Suppose you already own one of their GPS navigator displays (or would like to have a dedicated GPS navigator that doesn’t eat up all your cellular data). In that case, there are camera options that connect to Garmin’s portable navigators and provide a full functioning backup camera on that screen. Garmin offers complete packages with a display and camera, such as the Garmin DriveSmart 55 and BC 40 wireless camera and a recreational vehicle version; the RV 760LMT is packaged with a different version of a wireless camera. Of course, Garmin also offers the cameras on their own. These cameras are the BC 35 wireless camera and the BC 40 wireless camera. The Garmin BC 35 is a small camera that is easy to mount and direct the field of view. Wired to power either by utilizing the reverse lights for automatic viewing in reverse, or wired to a permanent power source, this camera connects via Wi-Fi with a compatible portable navigation device. You can just toggle between navigation and reverse camera screens with a touch of a button or have the display automatically switch to a reverse view if camera power is wired to the reverse lights. The guidelines produced on the screen are adjustable for
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
your vehicle size, and up to four cameras can be used in a single system for different views. With Wi-Fi transmission up to 45 feet, these tiny cameras offer an excellent view in a rugged all-weather housing. If you are looking for a completely wireless option that is incredibly easy to install and set up, then maybe the Garmin BC 40 camera is better suited to your needs. This tiny camera does not need to be hooked to the vehicle’s power as it runs off two AA batteries that last about three months. A bracket that fits under your license plate is provided, and the camera clips into the bracket and connects via Wi-Fi to your compatible Garmin navigator. With transmission up to 26 feet, this camera will work on just about any vehicle. Garmin is not the only company offering excellent rearview cameras and camera systems. A visit online to an RV supplier or a brick-and-mortar electronics automotive accessory store can produce many other options for aftermarket systems. Options from Ford Going to the other end of the spectrum, you can always purchase a brand-new truck with a rearview camera system. If you’re considering this option, you may want to look at one of Ford’s offerings. They now have trucks equipped with Pro Trailer Back-Up Assist. These trucks and SUVs come with a backup camera system, but they are also supplied with a Co-Pilot 360 system that includes two valuable features for towing a boat. The first is Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with trailer coverage. It extends blind spot coverage to the trailer you are towing, giving you warnings of blind spots not just to your tow vehicle but also to the trailer behind you. Another excellent feature is the Pro Trailer Back-Up Assist option. This option allows easy control while reversing by simply rotating a rotary control in the direction you want the trailer to steer. The automatic system takes over the steering wheel and allows complete and easy control while reversing the trailer. A visit to Ford’s website (FORD.COM) will reveal videos and explanations on how these features work. There is no denying that using a backup camera for hitching up and trailering makes life simpler. It doesn’t matter if you have an older vehicle or a newer one that isn’t equipped to help you tow; there is a system available that can make your towing safer and more enjoyable, so why not take advantage? ★

SAFETY FIRST BY HELEN AITKEN
We Crashed! Now What? What to do after an on-water accident.
B
oat operators are responsible for passenger safety, including proper maintenance, having the required U.S. Coast Guard safety items aboard, and operating the boat safely at safe speeds. Yet accidents happen: Severe weather, fire, reckless maneuvering or human error, and over ⅓ of boating accidents involve alcohol. There are specific procedures after an accident happens.
Call it in! If you dial 9-1-1 with a cellphone, the call goes to the nearest landline emergency station. It’s recorded and then forwarded to appropriate authorities, possibly delaying assistance. Instead, use a VHF radio and use Channel 16 to call the Coast Guard saying, “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday.” Give your boat’s location, identify the problems, medical issues, number of passengers, boat’s information and safety equipment onboard.
Accident reports Even if law enforcement personnel arrive to assess damages and establish fault, the boat operator/ owner must turn in an official report to the state’s boating authority and the Coast Guard. Obtain the Coast Guard forms CG-2692 Report of Marine Casualty or the six-page CG-3865 Recreational Boating Accident Report at USCGBOATING.ORG. Each Great Lakes state requires an accident form obtained online from the state’s boating authority. However, in Minnesota, use the Coast Guard form to send to the state boating authority and to the Coast Guard. Each state’s requirements differ in reporting times and in property damages. Notification of property damages of at least $750 in Indiana and $1,000 in Ohio must be sent in within five days. While in the other Great Lakes states, with at least $2,000 in property damage, the report should be sent in within 10 days of the accident. Most states require that death or disappearances must be reported within 48 hours of the accident. Further, if the accident occurs in a state where the boat is not registered, the information should be sent to both states’ boating authorities. Failure to report an accident with considerable damage or loss of life can jeopardize legal claims or even result in criminal charges. With pertinent and complete documentation, contact the insurance company to accept responsibility or to assign fault on someone else. Repair or claims from another agency may not be a speedy process, and are dependent on coverage, deductible, severity of the accident, injuries or even declaration of a total loss.
Documentation Photograph boat and property damages, the scene at the accident like weather or environmental factors (structures) contributing to the accident, and passengers onboard using a cellphone. This evidence is for the authorities, insurance claims or potential future litigation.
Boat removal The boat(s) may need to be moved away from congested areas if they’re posing problems for other boats. Using a towing service, or under the boat’s own power, move the boat(s) to a better location. However, most accidents can be avoided, so think safety first. ★
Ask initial questions Start by asking questions to determine the problem. Has the hull been breached? Is there fuel leaking? Are electrical wires exposed? Is water coming onboard? Do you need to evacuate? Is everyone onboard accounted for and wearing a life jacket? Is anyone overboard? If so, use man overboard protocols and get them into a boat safely. Are there injuries or medical issues needing professional help? Treat until help arrives. Some injuries may not be recognized, like shock, so monitor passengers for changes. Injuries should be assessed at a hospital. Adrenaline can mask pain and emotional stress, and delaying a doctor’s visit can affect personal injury claims where the person must prove someone’s negligence caused the injury, and in determining who is at fault. Move passengers to safe areas of the boat or off the boat to safety. Render assistance to others if it doesn’t endanger your vessel or passengers.
PHOTO COURTESY OF COAST GUARD NEWS
Obtain witness statements while the accident is still fresh in everyone’s minds. Supposition and assumptions hinder an investigation. If another boat is involved in the accident, get the other boater’s information: Name, address, phone number, email address and boat registration number.

hat happens when a seasoned team of boat builders and designers combine their visions with the goal of bridging the gap between fishing, cruising and family fun? What happens is the Crevalle 33 CSF, a center console easily merging the best of an action-packed offshore fishing boat with that of a comfortable day out with family and friends. “The Crevalle 33 is one of the most solid, impressive riding boats I’ve ever been on,” says Bay Marine’s Mark Felhofer. “For the fisherman, there’s not much more you could ask for as far as standard features.” The 33 CSF is, in part, a product of customer feedback and Crevalle’s own motivation to build a faster, bigger, long-range center console that would live up to the company’s rigorous standards, including its resin-infused construction process of making the hull and stringers an integral unit.
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
With a choice of 600- to 900-hp Yamaha, Mercury or Suzuki outboards, your 33 CSF is a high-powered performer capable of getting you out and back safely and without delay. There’s plenty of angling deck space fore and aft on the non-skid decks. Fishing amenities include three livewells (all featuring 30-gallon aft release wells, 1,100 GPH pumps and LED lighting), rod holders, a leaning post tackle prep station, in-floor storage for a 5-gallon bucket, a six-rod locker and a long list of custom options. “With all the conveniences the family would expect for a day at the beach, she is a very versatile, high-quality boat,” Felhofer says. That statement includes standard trim tabs, bow and cockpit seating and sun shades, a head, an aft table, 17 cup holders, a freshwater shower, an extended hardtop, among other comforts. With a Crevalle 33 CSF, it’s easy to build lasting memories. ★

With a distinctive profile, these extended cruisers/live-aboards are clearly recognizable and greatly admired. And as the brand-new GB85 hits the water, a new chapter in the iconic company’s history will begin. “We had one primary objective above all when we started the 85,” says CEO Mark Richards, “to deliver the most fuel-efficient, high-speed, long-range cruiser of this size.” Running on a lengthened version of a proprietary V-Warp hull designed by Richards in partnership with naval architect Andy Dovell, her fine entry flares amidships, which, according to the company, rolls the seas away from the yacht. On the construction side, achieving maximum rigidity and strength while paying special attention to optimizing weight and balance is achieved with
vacuum-infused E-glass, carbon fiber in structural areas, Corecell and Airex foam, stitched multiaxial fabric and 100% vinyl ester resin. The result is the exact ratio of resin to material. “After running the 85, we can state that yet again, we’ve moved to an entirely different level,” Richards continues. Fast forward to May 2022 and the Gold Coast’s major boat show, Sanctuary Cove, where the latest Maritimo M60 glistens in the Queensland sun while I talk with Bill’s son Tom Barry-Cotter, who is now managing director. “What we’ve tried to do on this boat is elevate all the great features of the original boat — shaft drives, long-range capabilities, flybridge wings and offshore performance capabilities shore — to a new level.” The newly arrived sibling is in the middle of the company’s bridge range that has the M51, M55, M64 and later this year the M75. The M60 is all about lifestyle, both at anchor and at sea — important characteristics for
boats designed to cruise the often harsh 36,000 miles of the Australian island continent. The challenge when designing towering enclosed flybridge cruisers is avoiding making them ungainly and top-heavy for offshore passages. This is a test which Maritimo’s design team conquered by putting slightly more beam into their hulls and using lighter weight laminates and a patented structure system within the flybridge to optimize weight. Finished off with some stylish aesthetics, including molded bridge wings which are a legacy from that very first 60, it creates a timeless profile on top of a stout hull that should give no unpleasant surprises as the years pass.

CRUISING VERSION
Hull No.1 that I board is a cruising-focused, luxurious yacht with a vast “adventure deck.” The area provides an expansive teak swim platform with hydraulic aft section to float a tender and includes a full beam wet bar. Handily, the entire transom deck hinges open on electric actuators to reveal a tender garage, enclosed by a deep gutter and double sealed rubber flange. Inside is enough space for a large PWC, hoisted by a folding davit. A step above this area is the aft cockpit completely shaded by the flybridge overhang, ideal for dinners around the transom settee with removable stools and swivel table. Underfoot, a teak clad hatch gives easy access to the spacious engine room. Tall side rails guide me safely to the bow where this first hull sports a double sunbed; a dinghy and davit can also be installed here if required.
DEDICATED SALOON
The new M60 saloon is dedicated to relaxation, with lounge forward and galley aft, ideally placed to serve outdoor diners via the triple bifold doors. The galley has an island bench which allows several people to work here and is extensively equipped for usability with large upright Miele appliances including fridge, freezer drawers, microwave and separate oven with three plate electric cook-top. Other appliances include a small dishwasher and downstairs, the option for a combination or split washer/dryer. Just slide the folding doors shut when the rain comes and it becomes cozy yet airy thanks to vast side windows adjoining from the saloon. A step-up on the paneled vinyl floor to the lounge area gives the ambience of a much larger vessel, thanks to that generous beam and tall windows placed ideally at eye height when resting on the couches that surround the area. A folding dining table on port and elevating 55-inch television hidden nearby complete the luxurious space. The satin walnut finish is understated and contrasts nicely with the light-colored leather furnishings. Access to the enclosed bridge and helm area on the M60 is by the wide internal stairs where the starboard helm shares a large lounge space with the sofa bed. Behind this mini-saloon is a spacious upper deck area. This M60 flybridge is the largest in the company’s current range of boats and can probably seat a dozen people — an ideal sundowner space at anchor. The uncluttered helm console belies a highly equipped bridge with Twin Disc EJS joystick and throttles starboard of the helm. Given the windage, controlling the shaft drives and thrusters with a simply operated joystick system delivers comfort to shorthanded owners.
FULL BEAM OWNER’S STATEROOM
Located deep in the hull, using the entire 17-foot beam, the king-sized owner’s suite is outstanding with several furniture options including vanity table and benches. Elongated hull windows give light with two opening portholes to increase natural airflow at anchor. The ensuite head is spacious and easily wiped down, with natural ventilation and a generous shower cubicle. Another creative use of space is the forward stateroom, where the queen berth is offset to starboard, creating a complete walkaround berth with a similar head to the master. The third stateroom with its movable bunks and large portlight finishes off this practical layout, making for a very versatile family boat. 30

• Huge enclosed flybridge feels like second saloon • Simplicity of all mechanical systems. • Could benefit from additional reading lights in saloon.
The key characteristics of the M60’s deep-V hull, long keel, modest deadrise and flat aft sections for planing all deliver good offshore performance. Interestingly, this first M60 is destined for shoal waters so molded tunnels are used to reduce draft. Additional directional stability comes from molded spray rails. “The hull is where you need the strength and weight so why compromise it,” says Tom. This M60 is powered by upgraded twin Scania 900-hp single turbo units instead of the standard Volvo Penta D13 800-mhps. The fuel system is designed to further increase stability, and indicative of Maritimo’s keep it simple approach, traditional breaker switching is used throughout the M60, allowing for simple troubleshooting by the owner should faults occur. Taking a tall flybridge cruiser offshore is usually not my idea of fun because the pendulum effect can make steering onerous. However, Australians have some good reasons for liking flybridges offshore: The great vision afforded when navigating our coral strewn waters and that third level of living space when at anchor. Sitting comfortably in the leather bucket seat at the helm of the M60 as we motor out of the narrow seaway to the Pacific Ocean, I realize the lack of pendulum sensation; albeit aided by only a small swell. It allows me to enjoy the light touch of the hydraulic helm and feel the thrust as I push the throttles down to stir the twin Scanias into full-ahead. The hull rises seamlessly out of its shallow hole to plane easily and without any tabs as the SOG numbers pass the 20-knot cruising speed before ceasing to rise at a tad over 30 knots. Nearing the shore it’s time for some slow handling with help from the silky smooth gearbox and joystick system. The intuitive movement of pointing the joystick in the direction of travel backs up the M60 straight as an arrow and its adjustable power is useful as the wind gusts. Done with aplomb, as befits every part of this immaculate M60 that certainly does Maritimo and its illustrious heritage proud. ★

here have been some amazing innovations in the marine industry recently. Some new products are the evolution of tried-and-true solutions, while others represent leaps forward to solve a problem or find a better answer. The new Iguana Yachts X100 is a perfect example of both. If you live on the water and can’t build a dock due to environmental or regulatory constraints, or if you just don’t want a dock, Iguana has the solution. A boat that can drive out of the water on treads and park on land.

The ’50s produced an amphibious vehicle, which was a car that could drive into the water and cruise a little like a boat. While innovative, the solution had some pretty big limitations. First, cars do not make very good boats and if the water wasn’t calm, the low freeboard would soak everybody’s shoes in short order. Not to mention, it had all the performance of a car forcing its way through the water. But, what if you went the other way? Why not make a boat that can drive onto land? The boat doesn’t have to go very far. You just need to get it out of the water where it’s protected from stormy weather and secure from unwanted attention. Iguana Yachts looked at the issue from the boater’s perspective and designed an amphibious vessel that is first, and foremost, a boat. Instead of a novelty item like the amphibious car, Iguana created a truly useful, great performing day boat with the ability to deploy its caterpillar-like landing gear and drive right up onto terra firma. Problem solved. 34

FROM LAND TO WATER Now, the first question that comes to mind is, why not use a trailer? For waterfront homeowners who can’t build a dock, the Iguana removes the need to hitch up, drive 20 miles to back the boat down a ramp, and then haul the boat back out of the water and drive back home to put it away. For many people, the trailering process removes the opportunity for a spontaneous cruise with friends or family. Iguana owners can (and do) park their boats on their property, then drive into the water, fire up the outboard engines, and head off to their destination — all while dressed up for a nice night on the town. On the way up to test run the boat in Elk Rapids, MI, I wondered if the X100 was truly a boat with the extra ability to “stretch its legs,” or if its superpowers added weight and drag that would take away from its primary purpose. I didn’t know it, but I was in for a very pleasant surprise. When I got there, I felt very weird about climbing aboard a boat knowing it was about to drive down the street, but up the boarding ladder I went. At the helm, a glass panel provides control over all of the boat’s

systems except a few, such as starting the outboards. Almost everything else can be controlled with a finger on the screen. A touch starts the auxiliary power plant under the center console which powers the hydraulic system and deploys, retracts and drives the tread system. Two small levers to the left of the helm control the treads making it feel a little like driving a Bobcat on land. The operator can choose between Fast or Slow modes, and then down the street or across the yard it goes. People stare at the Iguana X100 while it’s standing still. Once it starts moving, cars stop, joggers trip, and people reach for their phones to grab a picture or video. Riding down the street and waving back at people while standing at the helm feels like being in a parade. All of the hydraulics and drive gear are designed for longevity and low maintenance, and all of it stows in a recess in the hull creating no extra drag. After driving forward down the ramp, we retracted the landing gear, stopped the auxiliary engine, and a twist of the keys brought the Mercs to life. At that point, the Iguana X100 was all boat.

A POWERFUL SOLUTION The test boat featured twin Mercury 225s, although it can be ordered with a single 250 hp engine or with a max of 600 hp which will push the X100 to a top speed of 50 mph. A push on the throttle brought the boat up on plane like any other 32-foot open bow. At 3200 rpm, the X100 cruises comfortably at 22 mph. Wide open, the twin 225’s push the Iguana up to 40 mph with a smooth, quiet ride and the performance and handling you would expect from any other boat its size. Although it may seem like a novelty item, the Iguana Yachts X100 is anything but. The company’s quality and craftsmanship can be easily seen in the 10-year-old Iguanas that are still in regular use. It comes in many different configurations based on the same hull; the model tested was essentially a rigid inflatable, but with tank treads. Whether in use as a private vessel for a beachfront house, private island access, or the tender for a bigger yacht, the Iguana Yachts X100 can be the right solution where docking issues are best solved by the next link in technology’s evolutionary chain. ★

he U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says 20% of all new businesses fail within their first year. They further note that half of all new businesses go under before their fifth anniversary, and barely 30% survive to see their 10th year of operations. For a company to not only survive but thrive for 100 years is very rare indeed. Those which do go on to celebrate a 100th anniversary tend to be iconic brands that everyone knows: Coca-Cola, Harley Davidson, Ford, Kellogg’s. And, of course, Chris-Craft. Founded in 1922 as the Chris Smith & Sons Boat Company, the Algonac, Michigan-based boat builder changed its name to Chris-Craft in 1924 and has been an icon of recreational boating ever since. Ironically, the launch of Chris-Craft represented the culmination of a near 50-year career for founder Christopher Columbus Smith. Building boats came naturally to Smith, who constructed his first wooden boat — a flat-bottomed punt of a style widely used by duck hunters on nearby Lake St. Clair — in 1874 when he was just 13 years old. His punt was well made and proved durable, leading to requests from friends and family members to build similar boats for them. By 1881, Smith, with his brother, Henry, began to build boats full-time. Their fledgling company survived its first year in business, and its fifth, and its 10th. In 1910, with the business having beaten the odds and nearing its 30th birthday, the Smith brothers merged operations with some new partners to grow the concern and produce affordable boats for the mass market. Then known as the Smith Ryan Boat and Engine Company, the firm embraced new technological developments to create fast, attractive, yet economically priced runabouts. The new products made their debut at the Chicago and New York Boat Shows that year and sold well.

During WWII ChrisCraft built boats for both the Navy and Army, as domestic advertisements encouraged boaters to buy war bonds.
In spite of that success, Chris Smith found mass-producing boats to hit low price points unfulfilling. Approaching the end of his career, he wanted to focus on building higher quality vessels with more comfortable amenities. In 1922, he formed the Chris Smith & Sons Boat Company in Algonac. It was the sons who, in his honor, changed the company name to Chris-Craft two years later. Chris-Craft leveraged everything Smith had learned in nearly five decades of boat building, combining the best of old-world craftsmanship with the leading-edge technology of the day to create powerboats of the highest performance and quality. Although the boats were not inexpensive, neither were they unattainable for a majority of buyers. As a result, Chris-Crafts quickly caught on with serious boaters and attracted their share of celebrity buyers, including the likes of Henry Ford and William Randolph Hearst.
The next generation
By 1927, Chris Smith, now 66, passed the leadership of Chris-Craft to son Jay, who led the growing company as its president and general manager for the next 31 years. Under his leadership, ChrisCraft became the world’s largest builder of mahogany powerboats. Although sales declined in the 1930s with the onset of the Great Depression, the company’s high-quality runabouts and launches continued to find buyers among those who managed to weather the storm. Chris-Craft faced a promising future when founder Chris Smith died in 1939, at the age of 78. With the arrival of World War II, Chris-Craft shifted its focus to producing military goods, including patrol boats, rescue vessels and utility launches for the U.S. military. By the end of the war in 1945, the company had built in excess of 12,000 small boats for the Navy and Army alike. Following the war, Chris-Craft returned to building pleasure boats, just as the U.S. economy began an extended period of unprecedented growth. Once again, its well-made and stylish runabouts hit a high note with American consumers, attracting celebrity buyers like Dean Martin, Katharine Hepburn, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. By 1955, Chris-Craft’s powerboat lineup had grown to no less than 139 different models, the majority constructed from mahogany and equipped with only the highest quality hardware and fittings. But the 1950s brought about another significant change for Chris-Craft when the company began constructing its first boats from fiberglass. Tough, lightweight and impervious to rot, fiberglass showed significant promise as a boat building material, with the bonus of being easy to form into complex shapes that would be difficult to construct from wood. In a further step toward experimenting with new materials, Chris-Craft acquired the Roamer Boat Company in 1957 and began manufacturing metal boats under its newly formed Roamer Steel Boats division.
Ownership changes
Chris-Craft’s meteoric growth and enduring popularity soon attracted the attention of larger corporate concerns looking to expand, and in 1960, the company was acquired by National Automotive Fibers Inc. One of its first priorities was to expand Chris-Craft’s large boat lineup. Making its debut at the 1964 New York Boat Show was the all-fiberglass Chris-Craft

Commander, a 38-foot hardtop with a generous 13-foot beam. The Commander proved an immediate hit, and the model range soon grew to include vessels from 19 to 60 feet — all “styled in fiberglass” as the company moved increasingly toward the new material. Buyers loved it, and the writing was on the wall. In 1971 Chris-Craft closed a chapter in its long history with the production of its final mahogany boat. The early 1970s brought other changes, including declining sales due to the energy crisis and the resulting recession that followed. Chris-Craft came under new ownership again in 1981, when it was acquired by a group of private investors. Fresh ownership injected new energy and spawned a range of new products, including a sport boat line introduced in 1984 topped by the 300 Chris-Cat, a racing catamaran powered by twin 420-hp high-performance inboards. The Chris-Cat went on to set a number of new speed records in its class. That sporting image was further reinforced in 1985 as Chris-Craft products began to make regular appearances on the hit TV series “Miami Vice” and attract a whole new generation of celebrity owners, including Formula 1 and Indy Car driver Emerson Fittipalidi. Once more Chris-Craft’s success and star-powered profile attracted the attention of larger corporations looking to add to their own portfolios, and in 1989 Chris-Craft was acquired by Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC), manufacturers of Evinrude and Johnson outboard motors as well as OMC sterndrive engines. The acquisition of Chris-Craft was one of several made in rapid succession as OMC attempted to corner the recreational boating market altogether. It was a major gamble, and one that ultimately failed, leaving OMC to declare bankruptcy in 2000. Its assets were sold off, and Chris-Craft came under new ownership once again as part of Genmar Holdings Inc. Genmar subsequently sold Chris-Craft to Sarasota-based Stellican Ltd before declaring bankruptcy itself in 2009. By this point a global company with more than 120 dealers in over 45 countries, Chris-Craft flourished for another decade under Stellican’s ownership before being once again acquired by a bigger fish — in this case, current owners Winnebago Industries, in 2018. With the financial backing of an RV industry icon, Chris-Craft today continues to do what it has always done: Build stylish, well-made boats that combine the latest technologies and sporty performance with old-world quality and craftsmanship. ★

Lawrence Welk, the Andrews Sisters, the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones. Lake Minnetonka remains a Midwestern gem in the 21st century. Its shores are dotted with full-time residences and beloved cottages. Sightseeing boats ply its waters. The lake is also a haven for recreational boaters, with roughly 140 miles of shoreline, more than 30 protected bays and several waterfront communities to explore. Restoration and renovation One of those communities is historic Excelsior. Although the dance hall and amusement park are long gone, visionaries and dreamers still converge here to bring that Lake Minnetonka magic to life in new and unexpected ways. When Tyler Nelson first saw the 1902 Miller Block Building on Water Street, just a block and a half from the Port of Excelsior, it was a shambles. Abandoned for the better part of 30 years, the structure was on the verge of being condemned.
“Part of it actually was,” he recalls. “On the upper floor, there were apartments that hadn’t been rented since the early ‘90s. The roof was collapsing.” Yet Nelson saw the potential. Together with wife, Catherine, and partner, Jeff Verdoorn, he purchased the building in August 2019 — and very quickly learned that he had taken on a much more challenging project than he ever could have imagined. “I couldn’t touch it for six months,” he says. “I paid six figures before I could begin due to all the toxins. Then, the day I was done with the environmentals and got the go-ahead… well, it was March 2020.” Nelson didn’t let the COVID pandemic derail him, however. A licensed general contractor, he delved into the hard work of restoration and renovation, which had to be done in keeping with Historic Preservation Council standards. That was no small feat. Over the years, the building housed a hardware and tin shop, a milliner and a dry

here’s something a little bit magical about Lake Minnetonka, a 14,000acre glacial lake just 20 miles west of Minneapolis-St. Paul. For nearly 170 years, it has drawn people to its shores to play, to make memories and to dream. It started with poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1855, when his celebrated “Song of Hiawatha” launched a Victorian holiday-making boom. Travelers patronized grand establishments like the 1879 Lake Park Hotel, and they cruised the lake aboard the 160-foot sidewheeler City of St. Louis and the 300-foot, 2,500-passenger steamer Belle of Minnetonka. The good times continued to roll after the turn of the 20th century, thanks to the 1905 arrival of the Twin City Rapid Transit streetcars and the lake’s distinctive Express Boats. Day-trippers could easily travel from the city and enjoy lakeside destinations such as the small city of Excelsior, with its Coney Islandinspired Excelsior Amusement Park and Big Reggie’s Danceland, which hosted

he narrow waterways weaving through Les Cheneaux Islands in northern Lake Huron have welcomed an array of boats over the past 350-plus years — from the early Native Americans and French voyageurs in birch bark canoes to generations of tourists arriving by steamer, and later residents cruising along in their wooden runabouts. Pronounced “Lay-Shen-O” and affectionately called “The Snows,” this area stretches for 12 mainland miles and encompasses an idyllic 36-island archipelago that appeared on maps hand-drawn by Father Jacques Marquette as early as 1670. Residents would ultimately name their largest island after this Jesuit missionary. Accessible exclusively via boat, Marquette Island is home to Les Cheneaux Club (founded in 1888 as the Les Cheneaux Island Resort Association). The earliest members summered in canvas tents perched upon wooden platforms or unfinished frame cabins. Over time, the elite from large Midwestern cities constructed cottages and boathouses, as well as a large clubhouse and hotel. Among those early families were Wisconsinites Carl and Clara Leopold, and their son, (Rand) Aldo, who would go on to become a noted American naturalist, ecologist, conservationist, environmentalist and author of “A Sand County Almanac” (1949). Each June, his legacy is celebrated with an annual nature-focused festival. Boaters can access Marquette Island at Leopold

Marquette Island is also the home of Les Cheneaux Yacht Club, a reciprocal member of the Yachting Club of America, which represents approximately 150,000 boaters and over 600 registered yacht and sailing clubs throughout the country. Just off the northeast side of Marquette Island is Les Cheneaux’s one-of-a-kind house on Dollar Island. Legend has it that the government sold this 0.6-acre island for a single dollar (thus the name) and over time an elaborate three-bedroom, two-bath “Aladdin”-esque cottage — complete with a three-stall boathouse, wraparound deck, gazebo and waterfront “kissing booth” — has been constructed. Sitting just under 2.5 miles apart along the M-134 North Huron Scenic Byway, Hessel and Cedarville are midway between St. Ignace to the west and DeTour Village (the access point to Drummond Island) to the east. “Many bays among the islands offer protection from winds, so boaters can usually find an area of calm waters, no matter the wind direction,” says long-time local resident Norman Brood. Recreational boating has been the lifeblood of the Les Cheneaux area since its founding. E.J. Mertaugh Boat Works in Hessel opened in 1925, becoming the first Chris-Craft dealership in the world. These handcrafted wooden boats were built downstate in Algonac before being motored up Lake Huron to Hessel. Given both of these companies were founded during the Prohibition era, it’s no surprise that some of these now-classic vessels were used to smuggle bootleg alcohol to speakeasies on nearby Mackinac Island. The docks here are also the setting for one of the Great Lakes’ most prestigious in-water events — the Antique Wooden Boat Show — held annually on the second Saturday of August. Since 1978, this impressive exhibit features as many as 150 timeless beauties from legendary manufacturers such as Chris-Craft, Century, Hacker Craft, Lyman, Thompson and Gar Wood, among others. “My Father kept his 1930 Triple Cockpit Chris-Craft in Hessel at Mertaugh’s during the early 1980s,” says Bill Veneklasen, who was raised in Holland, Michigan, but now lives in South Carolina. “We would tour the waters and islands in that boat for hours. Years later, our family purchased a home on Coryell Island. Exploring the other islands and their special places within ‘The Channels’ are forever ingrained in my memory even though it’s been 10 years since my last visit.” Nearly a century later, Mertaugh’s continues to service locals and visitors alike, with its fuel dock, Ship’s Store and North Coast Shop, featuring sweet treats like ice cream, fudge and specialty coffees. Sailing is also a vital part of the Les Cheneaux experience, where Fleet 31 of the Ensign Class can be found. This is the largest fleet of its kind in the world, featuring more than 60 registered boats. This area is so well respected that the Ensign national championships were held here in 2010.

Les Cheneaux is a picturesque layover for cruisers heading into the North Channel or into the Straits of Mackinac. Access — which is less than a quarter-mile in width at is most narrow point — may seem daunting, but there are four primary access points to this maze of islands: • East entrance (between Booth Island and Strong Islands) • Middle entrance (between Marquette Island and Little La Salle Island) • West entrance (between Point Brûlé — named for French explorer Étienne Brûlé — and Marquette Island, beginning at Marker G1, is the main entrance to Hessel) • Fourth entrance (unnamed on official charters but often referred to as “Yacht Entrance” for the many yachts that access Government Bay for overnight anchorage). “On a nautical chart, the passages marked by buoys appear very narrow, contributing to the feeling when you come off the big waters of Lake Huron that you are entering a special, more intimate environment. But in years with good water and fewer weeds, these passages have plenty of room for two boats to pass,” says Sandy White, who has often navigated Les Cheneaux with her husband, Nicholas DeGrazia, on their Tiara 3500 Express, Old No. 7 — named for the early 1900s toy electric train designed by Joshua Lionel Cowan (Nicholas is a former president of the Lionel Trains Inc.). “Mariners in 2021 reported having found excellent anchorages in Search Bay, Wilderness Bay and Marquette Bay.” Government Island is a federally owned, uninhabited part of the Hiawatha National Forest System — the only totally public island in the region — maintained by Les Cheneaux Watershed Council. Once home to a Coast Guard Station, the island now boasts an extensive shoreline trail system and no-trace camping for those looking for a unique wilderness experience.

Nature truly abounds throughout the Les Cheneaux area, with many sites under the umbrella of the Little Traverse Conservancy open to the public for individual exploration. Woods & Water Eco Tours in Hessel offers a plethora of guided opportunities for kayaking, biking, hiking and birding. Public programs for adults and children are also available through the Friends of the Les Cheneaux Trails.
Culinary
Start your day with a visit to Les Cheneaux Coffee Roasters in Cedarville, a family owned, full-service artisan shop offering a variety of cold and hot beverages with fresh baked goods made daily. You’ll find bread, pastries and cakes, as well as homemade soups, salads, sandwiches and pasta at Little Buoy Bakery, also in Cedarville. In the heart of downtown Hessel, Les Cheneaux Culinary School & Restaurant is a year-round, hands-on classroom offering educational programs from September through May, with students putting their skills to work at the farm-to-table eatery during the busy summer season. Among the featured beverages served are spirits from nearby Les Cheneaux Distillers. “The distillery is definitely something that is unique to the area, since we make all of our own spirits, beer and wine,” says Katie Duman Bowlby, manager at Les Cheneaux Distillers, a local family owned, award-winning operation in Cedarville. “Both the Bohn and Bowlby families have been in the area for generations, and the local pride and support here in the area [for our products] is phenomenal. All of our spirits and cocktails are made with our area in mind. Marquette Island residents [among others] feel the extra love when ordering our ‘Marquette Mule.’” Other popular places to eat and drink include Ang-Gio’s, Cattails Cove, Hilltop Drive-Thru, Narley Whale Fish Market, Snows Bar & Grill,

The historic Hessel School House is home to the Avery Arts & Nature Learning Center and its new “Storybook Trail” for youngsters and their families. Winding through the woodland area around the school, the trail’s 18 stations highlight a variety of titles featuring Great Lakes lore. Inside in the 1920s-era O.M. Reif Boathouse on M-134 in Cedarville, the Maritime Museum is chock-full of vintage boats, antique outboard motors and marine pieces, as well as historic photos that give a glimpse back in time to the area’s rich boating heritage. The nearby Historical Museum is housed in an authentic log cabin with countless displays focusing on the development of Cedarville and Hessel dating to the 1880s. The Great Lakes Boat Building School opened in 2005 as a marine trades institution, and offers a 12-month comprehensive program. While not open to the public, the 12,000-square-foot facility complements the design of the region’s historic structures and is worth a drive-by.
Marinas
Those seeking to overnight in the Les Cheneaux area will find plenty of spots for boats of all sizes. Hessel Marina currently offers 24 slips with electrical and water hook-up and access to restrooms with showers, on-site laundry and pump-out service. According to Clark Township Supervisor Mark Clymer, they hope to expand the marina in the coming years to accommodate dockage demands from transient boaters, seasonal dock rentals, local day-use boaters and island residents, as well as develop an additional 115 feet of shoreline for the second yacht basin. (For reservations, visit MIDNRRESERVATIONS.COM).

Cedarville Harbor Marina features 14 slips and a spacious marina building with a lounge, showers and restrooms. It is within walking distance to several local businesses, the Les Cheneaux Library and boat service operations. (For reservations, visit MIDNRRESERVATIONS.COM).

Pier 53 Marine, Port Clinton Where fun and adventure begin.

eading out of peaceful, quaint West Harbor off Catawba Island in Port Clinton, Ohio, easy access to the Erie islands, southern Michigan and the Toledo and Cleveland metro areas awaits. It’s hard to imagine the now full-service 115-slip Pier 53 Marine situated in the harbor began as only a small brokerage and service facility back in 2009. Today, in addition to its 115 slips, transient dockage and newly renovated marina facilities, Pier 53 offers a full service department, a sales showroom offering both brokerage and new inventory consisting of Monterey, Blackfin, Fountain and Cobia boats, and multiple storage facilities. “Our goal was and still is to provide a hassle-free, one-stop boating experience with a focus on customer service and satisfaction. We strive to create customers and friends for life!” says Tustyn Wiedbrauk, sales and marketing at Pier 53 Marine.
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
And the focus on customer service is truly alive and well at Pier 53. A Mercury and Yamaha certified maintenance dealer, they were recently presented with Mercury’s 2021 Customer Service Index award. “Ultimately, what sets our marina apart is our dockers. We aren’t just a marina but more so a family! Everyone knows everyone and looks out for one another’s vessels,” explains Wiedbrauk. Since 2018 Pier 53 has been working on renovations to the marina, adding three new floating piers with water and electricity, with a fourth planned for later this year. With additional space, the marina is currently welcoming new dockers, and offers a variety of amenities including Wi-Fi and shower facilities. With an unbeatable location for cruising Lake Erie and exploring Michigan, Ohio and Canada to the north, Pier 53 Marine is your jumping off point for fun and adventure. ★

This Chris-Craft Roamer was built in 1967. The owner paid an extra $1800 to have the hull made of aluminum instead of steel, allowing the boat to maintain its integrity and be enjoyed for generations. The boat was purchased about 15 years ago in Point Breeze, New York. and brought to Caseville, Michigan. Since then Glory has been in most harbors around the Great Lakes as we cruise during the summer months every year. You get a lot of attention when you pull into dock, as it is a classic! Imron paint was applied in 2015, stainless steel rudders and rudder posts were also installed as they get along with the aluminum hull much better than steel ones do. Glory’s hull is thicker than most aluminum boats so you get a good ride. The hull is 3/16 inches thick with 1/2-inch stringers. It was repowered in 2019 with MercCruiser 454s. I have been replacing the isinglass enclosures a couple panels at a time. We have enjoyed all of our days on Glory as she is a terrific boat! The past seven years she has been in Cheboygan, Michigan, which allows for short day trips and cruises to many different places in northern Lake Michigan. Glory is for sale and is an excellent starter boat or live aboard. Should you be interested, please call Doug at 810-955-4065. — Douglas Bungard, Cheboygan, MI
