THE BEAUTY OF A CARVER YACHT IS MORE THAN SKIN DEEP. A lot of boats at the dock are all glitz and glamour. But how well do they perform when the going gets rough? All that pizazz is small comfort when you’re bouncing off the wave tops or wallowing in the troughs. At Carver, we’ve been building boats for more than 60 years that can handle the roughest water on the planet—the Great Lakes. Unlike salt water, fresh water is hard. Rock hard. And those waves can be steep and breaking. That means you take it on the chin, one wave after another in rapid succession. So we support our hulls with an extraordinary stringer system that reinforces the bow as much as the hull bottom. It’s not glamorous, but you’ll be glad of it the first time it’s blowing hard out at sea. No wonder Carver Yachts is taking the marine industry by storm. Sea trial one at your Carver Yachts dealer soon.

Stringers extend up the bow to prevent “oil canning” and reduce vibration in the hull when running into head seas.

The entire interior of the hull is coated with a white epoxy paint for easier maintenance and service.

Molded stringers are created using multiple layers of fiberglassengineered fabric for lighter weight, superior strength and resistance to water damage. Extra reinforcement in key areas provides rigid structural support for engines and generators. CARVERYACHTS.COM

FEBRUARY 2017 | VOLUME LXXI, NO. 2

I

n the boat biz, nothing compares to the excitement and anticipation of attending and exhibiting at a boat show. From the recently expanded Progressive Insurance Chicago Boat, RV & Strictly Sail show to the newly overhauled Miami International Boat Show, these events are a chance for passionate exhibitors to showcase their innovative boats, accessories and gear. You can hear the pride and joy in everyone’s voice. Growing up, I tagged along to many boat shows with my family and these experiences gave me a chance Publisher Bing and editor Kate at the 2016 Michigan City Boat Show. to truly understand what the boating community is all about. It was a learning experience not only on the different types and brands of boats, but also how friendly boaters can be. Making the boat show a family affair and exposing kids to shows at an early age may help them get involved and interested in boating. In this issue, we appeal to those who will be attending upcoming boat shows. From sea trials on two new boats: Crownline’s E29 XS (p. 40) and Cruiser Yachts’ 54 Fly (p. 44); to boat spotlights on four great models (p. 36); and new gear (p. 24), we’ve got your boat show shopping list ready to go. For those who are looking for a different type of excitement, we’ve jam-packed this issue with enthralling features: From a detailed tall ship Mediterranean vacation aboard Star Clippers Cruises (p. 49); to Great Lakes surfers who brave stormy (and sometimes frigid) lakes (p. 52); and a profile on a charming port of call: Petoskey, Michigan (p. 56). Stay warm! Do you have a story idea you’d like to suggest? Email me at kbush@ lakelandboating.com to share your ideas.

Help Reopen Lower Fox River Lock As a boater and member of the Appleton Yacht Club in Appleton, Wisconsin, I am writing to let readers know about a barrier to navigation that we are attempting to deal with on the Lower Fox River in Wisconsin. The Lower Fox is a beautiful waterway consisting of 16 locks that flow north from Lake Winnebago to Green Bay. The majority of the locks have been closed since the mid-1980s, when the Corps of Engineers decommissioned the waterway. There has been a major effort to reopen our beautiful waterway to navigation the last few years; the majority of the manuallyoperated locks have been refurbished and are reopened. Last July, the round goby — an invasive species hailing from the Black Sea region — was detected in the upper portion of the river. The Wisconsin DNR undertook a half-hearted effort to restrict its movement into Lake Winnebago and closed the uppermost lock in our chain. Since the waterway consists of a permanent barrier downstream, it’s likely that the goby entered the system via a trailerable boat; however, all ramps to the system remain open, while the lock remains closed. We believe that the Lower Fox River represents a truly unique area in the Great Lakes, offering calm-water cruising in close proximity to Door County. We would respectfully ask that all boaters throughout the Great Lakes please contact the legislators and governor of the State of Wisconsin and ask that they restore both common sense and navigation to the Lower Fox River. —Bryan Mick, Neenah, WI

Raymarine Wi-Fish Mobile App

The future of boating has arrived with Raymarine’s latest version of its Wi-Fish mobile app, which can be used with Dragonfly-PRO and Wi-Fish CHIRP Sonar systems. With the latest version of Wi-Fish, boaters can simply pan a smartphone or tablet across the horizon to see a dynamic overlay of saved waypoints on the water. The app also features a mobilefriendly mapping view, which allows boaters to see a bird’s-eye view of their location with saved waypoints plotted. To use Wi-Fish’s Augmented Reality mode, boaters must have a GPS-enabled smartphone or tablet. The Wi-Fish app is free and available on the iTunes App Store. Android versions of the app are coming soon. For more information, visit RAYMARINE.COM.

GREAT LAKES NEWS

Former President Obama passed the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act on December 16, which will fund cleanup efforts in the Great Lakes for five more years and help Flint, Michigan pay for an upgraded water system.

At the end of November, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reversed its previous course and announced it had raised mandated ethanol volumes for 2017. The final ruling will require 15 billion gallons of conventional biofuel be mixed into the nation’s fuel supply — which is an increase from the 14.8 billion gallons that were first proposed in May. The new 2017 standards coincide with levels Congress set in the 2007 Renewable Fuel Standard under the George W. Bush administration. In a statement, NMMA president Thom Dammrich says that the EPA decision threatens the safety of millions of American boaters because it could produce fuel with levels of ethanol that are damaging to boat engines. “EPA’s misguided decision not only denies the public choice at the pump to purchase ethanol-free fuels, but they are now increasing the spread of a dangerous, prohibited fuel blend that will cause damage to marine engines and raises serious safety concerns,” Dammrich says. For more info on the 2017 fuel standards, visit EPA.GOV. BUZZ

McMurdo Four-Frequency EPIRB

You don’t want to wonder which distress signal to use in an emergency. With a new line of distress beacons, McMurdo takes away indecision by combining multiple frequencies into a single beacon. The McMurdo SmartFind and Kannad SafePro EPIRBs are the world’s first distress beacons that utilize four frequencies commonly used in search and rescue operations: 406MHz and 121.5MHz for beacon transmission; GNSS for location positioning; and AIS for localized connectivity. The all-in-one beacons are also compatible with MEOSAR — an international search and rescue satellite system that can locate a beacon within 328 feet in five minutes. For more information, visit mcmurdogroup.com.

Susan Bonivich was recently named the 2016 Darlene Briggs Woman of the Year at the Marine Dealer Conference & Expo. Bonivich is the OEM/dealer sales manager for Volvo Penta of the Americas and is the second woman at Volvo Penta to receive the award within the past decade. The Darlene Briggs Award was established in 1987 for Darlene Briggs, the first retail marine saleswoman in Minnesota and the first female member of her state marine trades association. Each year the recipient of the Darlene Briggs Woman of the Year Award is chosen by the MRAA Educational Foundation and Boating Industry magazine based on leadership, involvement in business trade organizations and volunteer activities. In addition to her work at Volvo Penta, Bonivich has been a member of the National Association of Purchasing Managers, served as president of the Hampton Roads Purchasing Managers and cumulatively raised nearly $100,000 for the American Cancer Society, among other accomplishments. he abundant freshwaters of Lake Michigan and Green Bay surround Door County, Wisconsin, providing locals and tourists alike with a 70-mile long natural amusement park. Three hundred miles of coastline offers 54 public beaches; a plethora of all-season fishing opportunities; 34 islands; picturesque views of sandy shores and limestone cliffs; 11 lighthouses — the largest number of any county in the U.S.; a surplus of space for watersports; more than 260 miles of maintained snowmobile trails; and some of the best sunsets the Midwest has to offer. Within Door County, there are five state parks and 19 county parks, as well as many local parks, natural areas and nature preserves. Between the public and preserved land in Door County, there are about 23,000 acres of land begging for adventurers to explore. Much of this land is used year-round for various activities, such as hiking, biking, snowmobiling, bird watching, snowshoeing, sightseeing, camping and so much more. There really is no end to the recreational Whitefish Dunes State Park opportunities available in this scenic coastal county with a dynamic and diverse park system. Here, we list the top five must-visit parks in Door County: They’ll be well worth the trip.

One distinction that sets this park apart from others is the Northern Sky Theater located within the park, which puts on professional productions throughout the summer at its one-of-a-kind outdoor amphitheater. Walk down the tree-lined, illuminated path leading to the theater to enjoy an enchanting production under a starry Wisconsin night sky. Nicolet Beach is another hot spot in the park, with a beautiful sandy stretch, a concession stand, water sport rentals and a boat launch. Spend the afternoon kayaking along the beach; on a calm day, hop on a stand-up paddleboard and adventure over to Horseshoe Island.

Peninsula State Park: Fish Creek, WI Dubbed Door County’s most complete park, Peninsula State Park is also the largest state park in the county, providing seasonal events, watersports and recreation activities. It’s no wonder visitors travel from all over the world just to experience this slice of paradise. An 18-hole golf course, 468 campsites, 40 miles of trails, 8 miles of shoreline and the historic Eagle Bluff Lighthouse are only a few of the amazing features within the park.

Newport State Park: Ellison Bay, WI More than 2,300 acres of shore, wetland, forest and meadow are ripe for exploration at Newport State Park, Wisconsin’s only officially-designated wilderness park. Stroll down the tranquil sandy beaches and meander the forest trails while appreciating the organic beauty of the seemingly unfettered woodlands. The park boasts more than 30 miles of hiking trails, roughly 17 miles of off-road biking trails, 26 miles of open trails for cross-country skiing and 5 miles of snowshoeing trails. Newport State Park also offers 16 hike-in only campsites for a truly rustic camping

experience. For those seeking peace and quiet away from the everyday hustle and bustle, Newport State Park is an absolute must-see when visiting Door County. Whitefish Dunes State Park: Sturgeon Bay, WI With 867 acres — most of which is located on the rugged shores of Lake Michigan — Whitefish Dunes State Park is perfect for mermaids out there who want to rest their tired fins on a long stretch of sandy beach. This park is home to the highest sand dune in Wisconsin, Old Baldy, which rises 93 feet above the lake. You can climb to the top of the dune and look out over an observation deck. You might even be able to spot Clark Lake in the distance. Take a guided tour with a park naturalist and learn about the indigenous plants and animals that have had to adapt to the dune climate, or stop in at the Nature Center to learn more about the park. Cave Point County Park: Sturgeon Bay, WI This hidden gem is actually a park within a park, as it resides within Whitefish Dunes State Park. At 19 acres, it is the smallest park in the round-up, but it leaves a lasting impression when you visit. The mighty waters of Lake Michigan have eroded the limestone cliffs of the bank, offering spectacular outcroppings for sightseeing and climbing. This park is a must-see regardless of weather. During high seas, throw on a rain slicker and carefully view the show from one of the many spots atop the bluffs. As the waves collide with stone, the splashing water orchestrates a beautiful ballet of spray which dances in the air amidst a symphony of crashing waves. But be careful: It is also very wet. Don’t get too close to the edge if you’re not fond of a cold shower or cliff diving. On a calm day, scuba divers and kayakers explore the underwater caves that have been dredged out by thundering

waves. There are guided tours through the caves. For those who love snow and ice, Cave Point County Park is a gorgeous place to visit in the colder months as crystals form on the rock precipices, creating a spectacular winter wonderland. Ellison Bluff State Natural Area: Ellison Bay, WI This area can be hard to find but rest assured, it’s worth your time to search. A wooden observation deck and platform are securely situated on an escarpment, offering visitors some of the best sightseeing in the county. As you look out over these 100-foot limestone cliffs, you will be able to see the majesty of Green Bay and all the lush flora and fauna surrounding it. The park’s 174 acres feature excellent hiking trails, picnic areas and some rather astounding autumnal colors. Door County, Wisconsin has collected many titles in regards to its natural sprawling splendor: “Best Place to Watch a Sunset” by Midwest Living; “Best Beaches in the Midwest” by Family Fun Magazine; and “One of the Top Six Places in America to View Fall Foliage From a Boat,” as dubbed by the NMMA. Visitors have made Door County one of Wisconsin’s most popular vacation destinations, coming back year after year to engage in recreation and make memories amid this coastal county’s natural beauty. There is something here for everyone to enjoy — whether you want a relaxing time or an adventure-filled vacation. The parks of Door County truly are some of the best natural attractions in the Midwest. ★

DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier

Come Sail Away! Make the most of your test sail. boat test sail is a great way to weed out potential lemons before spending your hard-earned cash on a marine survey. Sure, you could ride around with a mango margarita in one hand while the broker regales you with tales of distant exotic lands; however, a smarter move would be to approach your test sail with planning and a critical eye. Here’s how to glean as much info as possible about your potential purchase during a test sail. Test sail vs. sea trial A test sail is typically shorter than a formal sea trial, so you may not have time for all of the checks below. If that’s the case, concentrate on the ones you feel will yield the most information in the amount of time you have. If you’re not 100 percent confident in your ability to do any of them, just leave those for your surveyor to conduct during the sea trial.

(Above) Checking engine and gear box fluid levels before and after the test sail will help spot leaks and other issues. (Top) A test sail allows potential buyers to see how a boat operates in a “real world” environment.

Leave the kids and dog at home Approach the test sail as a fact-finding mission — not a joy ride. Restrict your guest list to those with an immediate interest in the boat buying decision. This will help you stay focused on the vessel’s performance, rather than whether your kids are behaving or if Fido is watering the upholstery. At the dock Ask the owner or broker not to warm up the engine before you get there. You can learn a lot from a cold start, but the most basic observation is how hard the engine is to start — this is a perfect time for weak batteries and other problems to make themselves known. Try to arrive a bit early so you can familiarize yourself with the boat. Check the bilges (bilge water level, presence of oily water, etc.) and compare that with how the bilges look once you’ve returned to the dock. Check the engine oil, coolant levels and transmission oil level before and after the trip, confirming correct fill levels and noting any changes that could indicate leaks. It’s good to do this for hydraulic steering systems and trim tab units as well, if applicable. If there’s a generator, check oil and coolant levels and ask that it be started at the beginning of the test sail and placed under load (powering the air conditioning, for example). Let it run for the duration of the test sail, so you can observe its operation for as long as possible. Place a clean drip cloth under the engine and generator before getting underway (which makes oil leaks more noticeable). Record engine and generator hours before and after your test sail to verify the hour meters actually work. Now is also a good time to check the propeller shaft and rudder stuffing boxes for excessive leaking, once again comparing before and after test sail observations.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Underway checks Give whoever’s operating the vessel a heads up about what you’d like them to do during the test sail. Make a list of any maneuvers you’d like to perform in advance (figure-eight turns, back-down tests, etc.) and go through it with the captain before leaving the dock. Once underway, record the oil pressure, coolant temperature, volts and gearbox oil pressure for the engine at various speeds: Slow throttle, half, full and cruising speed. Record these numbers at all helm stations to compare readings in order to verify that the gauges work. While underway, inspect stuffing boxes, dripless shaft seals and rudder glands for leaks. It’s not unusual for these to be dry at the dock but leak while the vessel is underway. Check the shaft for vibration at various speeds. If there’s visible wobble, you can get a rough idea of how bad the problem is by touching the top of the gear box. If you can feel it there as well, the issue needs to be corrected sooner rather than later. If there’s an engine manual on-board, note the manufacturer’s maximum recommended rpm. Then, after the engine has warmed up a bit, ask that it be run at full throttle for a short distance. The rpm at wide-open throttle should be within 100 or so of the specs (depending on the engine). A maximum rpm higher than recommended could mean the prop is too small, while a slower rpm could indicate a prop that’s too large in pitch, diameter or both. While running at maximum speed, verify that actual speed matches advertised speed. This is also the time to look for any unusual sights and sounds: Burning smells, smoke, vibration and excessive broker sweating. Boat handling checks Standard maneuvers while under power include a back-down test and figure-eight turn. The back-down test (reducing throttle quickly while shifting from cruising speed to neutral, then to reverse, then increasing power) lets you check the engine mounts for excessive movement. Just be sure to provide sufficient time when shifting between forward and reverse. Worn or misaligned engine mounts cause shaft alignment problems, meaning the mounts themselves may be bad or due for replacement in the near future. Figure-eight turns at cruising speeds are useful to verify maneuverability, handling and that the vessel has an equal turning radius to port and starboard. As you can see, there are plenty of things you can do to make a test sail productive; but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a good time as well. You can still listen to the raucous tales of the owner or broker — just tell them to hold off on the margaritas until after your work is done. ★

ELECTRONICS by Glenn Hayes

Trending Now A look at what’s new at 2017 winter boat shows.

GLENN HAYES is a marine writer and photographer whose background in the marine industry and in marine electronics spans almost three decades and many thousands of miles at sea traveling the world. He can be reached at HAYESSTUDIOS.COM.

More bang for your buck While closeout pricing can be enticing, it’s clear that one of the most relevant trends is how much more value boaters are getting in small- to medium-size boat combination units. Prices have dropped while features and functions have grown in recent versions of GPS/chartplotter and fish finder combinations. These compact, standalone units have more built-in features and offer better, easier to operate user interfaces. A prime example is the new Simrad GO9: A 9-inch multifunction, high-resolution, bright touch-screen display with chartplotter, side and down scan sonar, and radar capability — all for around $1,200. This unit is a good example of a new electronic that has larger screens, more built-in features and better user interfaces for less than you would have paid for a smaller unit just a year or two ago. T RE N D 2

Cutting the wire The internal side and down scan sounder in the GO9 is just one of many features that are built into many new displays. Gone are the days of having to add modules or

black boxes to get features found in more sophisticated systems. Raymarine, for example, was an early adopter of built-in Wi-Fi available as a feature in some of its new displays, and other manufacturers are now including it with their products. This can be particularly useful for uploading routes, and performing software and charting updates. Look for displays with customized web browsers, such as found in Navico’s new operating system (NOS). By doing so, they have opened the door to much easier integration with other equipment, and we should see some very interesting collaborations in the near future. Raymarine has taken wireless connectivity to your smart device one step further; “Augmented Reality Viewing” uses a smart device, such as a phone or tablet, with the app and a Dragonfly-Pro sonar system. Just hold your device up with the app open and you can see exactly where you are in relation to your waypoints. Look for other interesting and useful ways to link apps to onboard displays in 2017. TREND 3

Incorporating Navionics Keep your eye out for new equipment utilizing Navionics charts and software, such as the latest offerings from Navico. These new displays take advantage of Dock-to-dock Autorouting, Sonarchart Live (allowing boaters to create their own personal, detailed bathymetry charts in real-time on their displays) and Plotter Sync, which allows wireless chart updates, along with wireless route and waypoint uploads. Don Black, senior vice president of Navionics, says, “We are excited that this technology will be more widely accessible through our longstanding partnership with Navico.” With lower prices and technology gains, 2017 is shaping up to be a great time to consider new electronics for your boat. If the latest and greatest strikes your fancy, there are a lot of new offerings, with more to come. And if you’re fine with last year’s model, there are bargains to be had. Either way, your time on the water will benefit from some great technology. ★

oat shows are some of the best places to see the latest and greatest marine electronics. A wide array of products and manufacturers are present to peruse, and discounted show price tags can be enticing. While pushing those buttons and trying to figure out what equipment would be best for your application, you can also clue in on some trends for 2017. It’s important to recognize where technology is headed and if it’s somewhere you want to go, or if you would rather take advantage of discounted prices and rebates on models that are currently (or are about to be) phased out.

SAFETY FIRST by Helen Aitken

Take the Search out of Search and Rescue Test your knowledge of Maritime Mobile Service Identity.

T What’s on your radio? The most important safety tool on-board a boat is a VHF radio. Equipped with a onebutton DSC and a MMSI, casual hailing is easier, and a rapid distress signal improves the possibility for a successful search and rescue. To register for MMSI, contact BoatU.S. at BOATUS.COM/MMSI; there is a $25 fee (free for subscribers). U.S. Power Squadrons does not charge a fee: USPS.ORG/ PHP/MMSI. hroughout the world, the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System uses digital protocols for routine and distress-hailing signals, managed on different radio frequencies. This reduces signal congestion with designated calling channels and provides appropriate emergency assistance to hail the Coast Guard on Channel 16. Any boat monitoring Channel 16 may also assist. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) updated this system in 1999, adding Digital Selective Calling (DSC) in the U.S. DSC is a one-button emergency key that broadcasts a vessel’s latitude/longitude location from fixed and new handheld radios on Channel 70, which is also monitored by the Coast Guard. When activated, a piercing alarm notifies nearby boats, encouraging Good Samaritan assistance before the Coast Guard arrives. This established a good system, but pertinent information was lacking. The recent Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) addition to DSC identifies the boat, the owner’s personal information, ship earth stations, coast stations and coast earth stations within a unique nine-digit number. GPS locations update continuously (even while drifting) and the time of call is recorded. MMSI works on fixed or handheld radios, and should the captain be incapacitated, it will continue to send a signal. Take this quiz to see how much you know about MMSI. True or False? T/F 1. Pressing a DSC key in a non-emergency is illegal. T/F 2. A marine handheld transceiver or radio may be used on-shore. T/F 3. Boaters can still hail the Coast Guard on Channel 16 in an emergency. T/F 4. A MMSI is programmed into the boat’s radio. It also acts like a cell phone “caller ID” for hailing another boat with MMSI. T/F 5. A casual hail to a boat with MMSI “rings” like a telephone. Once acknowledged, it transfers to a working radio channel in which the conversation becomes public. T/F 6. MMSI validates and reduces the emergency search and rescue time, especially in open water. T/F 7. Only one MMSI number is designated for a boat’s radios, including INMARSAT telephone, two fixed radios, or a fixed and handheld radio combination. T/F 8. Most recreational boats cruising U.S. waters obtain MMSI numbers from BoatU.S. or U.S. Power Squadrons (USPS). Information is then passed on to the Coast Guard and stored there or with USPS as confidential data.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

T/F 9. Boats cruising international waters or traveling to Canadian ports require a Ship Station License from the FCC, which includes MMSI. Canadian boats must obtain MMSI from Industry Canada/Industrie Canada. T/F 10. If you forget your MMSI, call another boat with MMSI to relay the number back to you. T/F 11. EPIRBs and PLBs may also get MMSI. *These beacons transmit a distress signal in 406 MHz and can’t receive signals. However, they should be registered with NOAA and then added to the MMSI application to consolidate the information. T/F 12. If I sell my boat, the MMSI stays with the radio on-board. *The original owner cancels his information while the new owner updates his. If the radio is removed, MMSI is cancelled and the new owner applies for a new MMSI. T/F 13. If a radio is replaced, cancel the original MMSI and get a new one. *Program an additional radio carefully with the original MMSI number; you may only get one chance. T/F 14. If your boat uses Automatic Identification System (AIS) with MMSI instead of DSC, the ship’s movements are visible and can be tracked in real-time using websites like NOAA Ship Tracker (SHIPTRACKER.NOAA.GOV) . T/F 15. A handheld transceiver with DSC and GPS not intended for dedicated use on a particular boat needs a unique MMSI that can be updated with use on different boats. T/F 16. You may test if MMSI works by pressing the DSC button. *This creates an illegal false alarm, sending an unnecessary rescue response. You may program the Coast Guard MMSI number (003669999) into your radio’s memory, select “test call,” and press the “call” or “enter” key. It silently hails the Coast Guard with a digital signal on Channel 70 and an almost immediate response is returned. However, the best options are to hail another MMSI to verify the ID and respond, or contact a local TowBoatU.S. captain for a courtesy DSC radio check. ★

ASK THE EXPERT by Elizabeth Altick

Easy, Breezy Boarding Nautical Cross’ Jim Stefano describes nifty boarding and safety devices. LB: Boarding a boat can be tricky, especially for small children and older adults. Is there a device that can make it easier and safer?

CONTACT Nautical Cross 419-341-0432 NAUTICALCROSS.COM

Stefano: The Nautical Cross Boarding Pole creates added safety, confidence and comfort for everyone on-board, regardless of age. People tend to reach for something when they board, and our Boarding Pole serves the purpose perfectly, allowing a smooth transition on and off a boat. The temporary vertical bar slips and locks into a flush-mount rod holder in just seconds. It can be left in while running or be stored elsewhere on-board. Made from finely polished, non-rusting aircraft-grade aluminum, our Boarding Pole is rated for 300 pounds. LB: What is the best way to keep lines from becoming a tangled mess and, even worse, falling into the water?

LB: Is there an easy way to keep fenders and buoys from damaging the boat?

Stefano: Over the years, I’ve noticed lots of beautiful boats damaged, cracked or marked up from docking, rafting together or sitting at the dock. I was often frustrated trying to find a place to secure a fender toward the back of a boat. Our Nautical Cross serves as a temporary tie-off for fenders, tenders, even chum bags for fishing, as well as a great way to manage fenders and lines to keep decks clear. Made of anodized aluminum, it slides into the rod holder and locks into place, creating an easy way to secure a fender. It can be used for either a ball fender or a cylinder tied vertically. ELIZABETH ALTICK specializes in recreational marine, cultural and humaninterest subjects. She was formerly executive editor of a recreational boating magazine.

LB: At the dock, multiple cables with water and electrical lines can be hard to sort out. This may create a safety issue. Is there a way to keep the lines organized?

Stefano: The Cable Caddy is the proper way to eliminate these annoyances. It adheres to your boat slip for convenient access every time you dock. An easy, one-screw system

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

allows for efficient setup. The Cable Caddy is made of non-rusting aluminum and stainless steel hardware. LB: Boat owners love to show off their allegiances. What’s the best way to display a burgee flag?

Stefano: Boaters fly multiple burgee flags for identity as well as spirit. Our Burgee Pole is a great way to wave the flag. It’s easy to use and designed to fit your boat’s rocket launchers and flush-mount rod holders. It is 29 inches long and has stainless eyes with nylon spacers to easily attach the burgee with a clip or plastic wire tie. The Burgee Pole is made from finely polished, non-rusting aircraft-grade aluminum. LB: Some Nautical Cross devices require a flush-mounted rod holder. What if a boat owner doesn’t have one?

Stefano: We have our own high-quality Nautical Cross flush-mount rod holders. They fit our small-diameter Nautical Cross and poles. LB: For what types of boats are your products best suited?

Stefano: Our products work well on smaller fishing and cruising boats, as well as on megayachts with tenders. The great thing about our products is that they bring safety and comfort aboard and are simple for all ages to use. Our products are high quality and our customers love us for it. ★

Stefano: Our Swinging Line Holder is a great way to hang your lines; it’s a simple, convenient hook that fastens to your dock and holds the lines until you need them. You can easily retrieve them upon arrival at the dock without having them fall into the water. The device also allows you to dock without ever leaving the boat. An integrated hinge positions the holder exactly where you need it. The galvanized steel hook and stainless steel hardware will ensure many years of docking convenience.

Azimut Verve 40 Standing out from the crowd.

W

hen it comes to the fun and flexible express cruiser design, the North American market has long been dominated by names like Cruisers Yachts, Sea Ray, Four Winns and, more recently, Beneteau and Jeanneau. Despite these boating giants, Azimut is aiming to change the game with its new Verve 40, a unique and lavish express cruiser with triple outboard power. Selecting outboard power for the Verve 40 allowed Azimut to create a single-level cockpit that’s not only lower to the water than most typical express cruiser designs, but also offers many wide-open outside entertaining space. Teak decking just about everywhere creates a warm atmosphere and a unique boarding door in the aft port topside quarter makes hopping on-board easy. Folks who love laying in the sun will enjoy the expansive sunpad spaces on the foredeck. All in all, this departure from the typical layered wedding cake decks found on many express cruisers is refreshing. Below, the Verve 40 has a forward, private master stateroom with a queen-size island berth and lots of natural light and ventilation. The main salon features a portside

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

galley with a bench dinette adjacent to it. Farther aft is an enclosed shower and head. There isn’t a midcabin guest stateroom, but the dinette can be converted into a sleeping berth. As you’d expect from an Azimut, the interior is layered with lots of luxurious touches, including leather upholstery, stainless steel hardware and contemporary wood trim. You would expect a large dollop of performance with 1,050 hp bellied up to the stern, and the Verve 40 doesn’t disappoint. Three big Mercurys push the Verve 40 to a top speed of 44 knots, and the sleek design efficiently cruises at a snappy 37 knots. The control center for all of these ponies is at the helm, which features joystick steering that integrates with the bow thruster to make docking a snap. Federico Lantero, Azimut Yachts brand manager, says: “More sophisticated than a walkaround, more stylish than a center console, and more spacious than a day cruiser, the Azimut Verve 40 stands out from the crowd. The elegance of its styling and its spaciousness, featuring an extensive cabin area, gives it every right to call itself a weekender.” ★

Practical elegance from Maine.

D

ang, that’s a sharp looking boat,” is what crossed my mind the first time I encountered Back Cove’s Downeast 37. This open variation of the builder’s immensely popular 37 not only looks good, but also has an immense amount of outdoor space. It’s quick, too, with a 25-knot cruising speed and a top-end near 30 knots. Outdoor entertaining and relaxation spaces received a lot of attention from the Back Cove design team, and their hard work is apparent in the Downeast 37’s aft cockpit and bridge deck areas. A transom walkthrough door provides easy access to the aft cockpit. The bridge deck is on the same level as the aft cockpit (read: no step up, a nice feature) and is accented by an L-shaped dining area, bench seating behind the starboard side helm, and copious amounts of glass for great visibility and lighting. Below, the Downeast 37 features a large master stateroom with an island berth in the bow, a capable and well-equipped galley with tons of stowage space and all the cooking goodies, and an enclosed head/shower as part of a large, open-concept main salon. Light, airy and

contemporary, it’s perfectly suited for a couple to enjoy extended cruises or long weekends. A 480-hp Cummins QSB turbo diesel is standard on the Downeast 37, though many customers order it with the optional 600-hp Cummins powerplant. The optional engine provides spirited performance, consuming 22.6 gallons of diesel fuel per hour (gph) at cruising speed. Most folks will likely cruise in the 18- to 20-knot range, however, where fuel burn settles down into the 14- to 17-gph range. Bay Marine’s Mark Felhofer summarizes: “The Back Cove Downeast 37’s 150-square-foot cockpit accommodates family and guests with ease, and there is more than ample storage aboard for all of the necessities, including water toys. The galley, stateroom and headspaces are all large and airy with a centerline island berth, a full galley and a private head with a separate shower stall. A 30 mph cruise with more than a mile per gallon performance is truly remarkable in its class, making her fast, efficient and comfortable. The Back Cove Downeast 37 is practical elegance from Maine.” ★

Tahoe Cascade Cruise 23 Cruise comfortably.

T

ahoe has a well-cemented reputation for building pontoon boats with solid construction, great performance, smart looks and at a good value. One of the builder’s most popular model lineups is its Cascade range, which includes the Cascade Cruise 23. At first glance, I can tell the Cascade Cruise 23 caters to lounging and relaxation. The forward end of the deck has two L-shaped lounges — one long, one a bit shorter — that can be used as upright seating for seven to eight people or as two comfy chaise lounges for a pair of folks to stretch out and relax. Entry gates are located between the two lounges forward, and just aft of the portside lounge unit. The skipper gets his own heavily cushioned and upholstered swiveling captain’s chair, which is set behind a helm loaded with LED-lighted rocker switches, big analog engine gauges, a Polk stereo and a chartplotter unit. There’s an L-shaped lounge aft and a sunpad at the stern. Despite its reasonable price of around $47,000 (as described here), the Cascade Cruise 23 looks as if it’s a much more expensive model. The upholstery and cushioning material

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

used in the furniture is top-rate and every deck component feels as if it were installed with expert care — no creaks or irritating rattling noises from poorly installed components that prove problematic on other pontoons I’ve run. Under the deck are precisely welded tubes with lifting strakes that improve performance. The deck fencing has sweeping lines and coordinated colors that make this a great looking pontoon. You can get all sorts of performance baked into the Cascade Cruise, depending on your budget. This particular model came equipped with a Yamaha F115-hp four-stroke outboard, though you can get powerplants from Evinrude, Suzuki and Mercury, ranging from 9.9 hp all the way up to the maximum 300-hp rating. Outfit the Cascade Cruise 23 with the Waveglider package and you’ll get handling much like traditional V-hull boats. Matt Mrozinski, with Lake Michigan Yacht Sales, says, “Performance of the Cascade with the Waveglider Triple Tube Package is truly second to none. Amazing rough water capability, coupled with maximum speed and enhanced turning, makes the Cruise 23 a blast to drive.” ★

hen it comes to sportfishing yachts, there are few names more iconic than Viking. A new member to the legendary family is the Viking 37 Billfish, a smaller but very capable sportfish with the credentials to raise big fish to the transom and excellent seakeeping abilities, to boot. Getting out to the canyons — or deep Great Lakes water — is a speedy affair thanks to twin Cummins turbo diesel power. The two six-cylinder common rail diesels churn out a combined 1,100 hp, good for propelling the Billfish up to nearly 35 knots, with a cruising speed in the low 30-knot range. Control of all those ponies happens up on the flybridge, which provides a commanding view of your trolling spread and lounging space for guests via two generous bench seating areas to port and starboard. A unique lower helm station is situated in the luxurious main salon, which has a U-shaped dinette and additional bench seating. Take three steps below and you’ll find an L-shaped galley to starboard with a two-burner stove, a sink, a microwave/ convection oven, refrigeration and plenty of stowage room for provisions. To port is an enclosed head/shower, while forward is the master stateroom. It can be fitted with an island berth or

with offset berths more suited to crew napping. Rich upholstery and interior fabrics accent the elegant woodwork and joinery. The cockpit is where the action happens on any good dayboat or sportfish yacht, and Viking has outfitted the 37 Billfish with features commonly found only on larger yachts and sportfishing machines. A set of aft-facing benches on the mezzanine provide a great place for keeping an eye on live baits, a trolling spread, or simply enjoying the ride. Large fish lockers hide beneath the cockpit and there’s also a bait freezer and livewell, all of which can be easily used for storage and stocking up for cruising. An opening transom door facilitates boating large catches, and add a swim platform for a joyful day of fun playing in the water. Erik Krueger, VP at Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales, states, “It’s exciting to see Viking put a smaller model in the marketplace. I’d take this over a high-end center console any day, and it’s perfect for cruising or fishing. A home run.” The first Viking 37 Billfish will make its inaugural appearance at the 21st Annual Viking VIP Boat Show Preview in February 2017 at the Viking Yacht Service Center in Riviera Beach, Florida. ★

BOAT TEST

It’s not easy turning heads when you’re cruising on Michigan’s Torch Lake, located within the northwest corner of the state’s Lower Peninsula. But stand out from the crowd is exactly what Crownline’s new E29 XS did as it slowly glided out from the Torch River. I was looking forward to putting this 29-foot, 3-inch vessel through the paces. Before delving into the nitty-gritty of my first impressions, however, let me explain why any craft can easily go unnoticed here. 41

LA K E LA N DB OA T IN G . C OM | F E B R U A R Y 2 01 7

First off, the 18,770-acre lake, measuring about 19 miles long and 3 miles wide, is a real jaw-dropper itself. The lake’s aqua-blue water is so clear that you can see the bottom in 40-plus depths on a calm day. The aesthetics of this lake is why multi-million-dollar homes are built upon its shores, and, as you can imagine, these homeowners dock some mighty fine boats out front. Boaters will travel many miles just to cruise the dozen bodies of water within Torch’s Chain of Lakes system, which eventually flows into Lake Michigan. And then there’s “The Sandbar” directly out front from where the driver was picking me up; where thousands of folks and hundreds of boats anchor for summer fun. Our sea trial took place in late August, just as The Sandbar’s party was about to start. To stand out on Torch Lake is not easy, yet most everyone on the lake that day took a second glance at the sleek body of this boat. The E29 XS is undeniably eye-catching.

Right off the bat

Classified as a sport deckboat, the E29 XS is the largest in Crownline’s Eclipse XS series and sports the F.A.S.T. Tab hull, with her bow angled at 31 degrees. That’s what my eyes were fixed on as it sliced through the surface while coasting up to the dock. I could tell right off the bat this was, at the very least, going to be a smooth ride in a chop that was accumulating from the increasing wind and boat traffic. A performance hull like this is also great for motoring through fast-flowing river systems, such as the one the boat had just exited. Here, the river narrows and runs about 5 mph. The Torch River typically has dozens of boats traversing at one time, which then spin around and tie up to the boardwalk of the on-shore party store, where boaters can get gas and supplies for the day. Boat control is crucial in situations like this for safety and keeping the peace, and the E29 XS steered flawlessly through the current. The first test, however, came well before starting the twin 250-hp four-stroke Mercury Verado outboards (the E29 XS is rated for up to dual 300s, mind you), and that was seeing how difficult it would be to get myself — with ruptured disks in my lower back, a new titanium hip and other assorted ouchies — into the rig. To my relief, the rear full-width, wraparound swim platform was a great height for boarding from the dock, with soft, non-slip matting and room to move about, including plenty of space between the two rear seats. All I had to do was step on, touch one hand to one of the outboards to steady my now-normal wobble, then walk right through and down into the cockpit area.

it slices, not dices

The E29 XS is nothing like the dicey deckboats of yesteryear that my uncle used to rent for family events on this Chain of Lakes. Those would jar your every joint if the chop rose above 1 foot, and then take water over the bow in waves any taller. Instead, this boat’s hull made for one of the smoothest rides I’ve had in a long time.

42

f e b r u a r y 2 0 1 7 | L a K e L a N D b O a T I N G. C O M

Between the boat traffic and wind, the waves were reaching 2 feet and coming from all different directions. Not once did the boat waver as the hull sliced through the inland sea, no matter our speed. And in this chop, the craft averaged only 4.5 seconds from idle to a comfortable 30 mph cruising speed. The idea behind the E29 XS is a melding of deckboat and bowrider, including its seating. The spacious U-shaped bow area is designed for comfort and convenience, featuring “hot tub” style lounge seats with heavy-duty flip-down armrests. The driver and passenger seats face forward or recline into rear-facing loungers, and feature flip-up bolsters, which allowed me a higher ride while viewing well over the windshield. Dual electric aft lounge seats easily adjust to your desired position: Foward-facing, aft facing, flat for use as a sun lounge and every position in between. To tell you the truth, the seating was more comfy than any in my home.

information. Depending on your choice of engines, you have the option of Mercury D.T.S. or Yamaha D.E.C. controls. Everything the kids want for waterskiing is here, too, including a rope station and a built-in ladder that conceals when not needed. If anything, the E29 XS was comfortable enough that I could hang out in it all day — just what Crownline designed it for. Go figure. ★

NOW YOU SEE IT, NOW YOU DON’T

Is there anything worse than having to step over stuff when you’re moving about a boat? I think not. And with all the storage available on the E29 XS, I couldn’t see how this would ever be a problem, even if surprised with extra guests and gear. The large storage areas beneath both bow seats were impressive enough. Combine those with two huge in-floor storage compartments with impact-resistant finish on the floor; a finished storage tub at the transom; and in-floor bow storage, and the only thing you should see out in the open are the cold drinks in the stainless steel cup holders. To keep drinks and munchies ice cold, there’s a marine drawer refrigerator incorporated under the cockpit bench seating, and a built-in 36-quart cooler at the bow; out of sight but not out of mind. A portable dining table can be used at the bow or within the cockpit area, and stores away in the under-mount storage drawer when not in use. When nature calls after all that sipping and feasting, there’s a well-lit, roomy head, featuring upper and lower cabinetry and granite countertops, a vessel sink and silhouette faucet, and an electric-flush head with holding tank — all concealed within the passenger-side console. And when I say it’s roomy, well, let’s just say if I can fit in there, anyone can. When you’re tired of the sun’s rays, there’s a standard Marquis aluminum hardtop featuring a pullout SureShade canvas extension to protect everyone in the cockpit; a feature I was more than happy to utilize on this hot summer day.

IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS

I admit, I like to listen to music while boating, and the E29 XS impressed me with its premium Polk stereo and 10 marine WetSounds speakers; they’re nice enough you don’t have to crank the volume and annoy the neighbors… Well, unless you want to. Keeping up with modern technology, there are several USB ports located throughout the boat, and a Raymarine eS98 touch-screen MFD with engine and depth

Cruisers Yachts The need to fly.

I

PHOTOS COURTESY OF CRUISERS YACHTS

’ll let you in on a little secret: Cruisers Yachts did their homework. They planned ahead. And that makes the addition of the new 54 Fly fairly seamless for them and attractive to the marketplace. Cruisers anticipated change when they designed and constructed the popular 54 Cantius. They knew they would want to make a flybridge model, and why not? So they designed the hull, powerplant package and exterior lines to easily translate from the 54 Cantius hull to the 54 Fly. And it works. Cruisers retains the ability to open up the yacht with the aft deck and galley/salon blending together. The flow of the 54 Fly is basically from stem to stern, courtesy of a fold-back door and drop-down window in the aft bulkhead. From the aft deck settee with a double-post wood table, there’s clear access to the portside U-shaped galley, which includes drawer fridge/freezer units, a two-burner cooktop, a microwave oven and abundant counter space. Midship to port is the U-shaped settee and dining table, and across is a sofa and recessed TV. Forward to starboard is the full helm station, with a Volvo Glass Cockpit system, a joystick controller and touch-screen monitors for charts, radar, etc. Accommodations are just a few steps below and include a VIP in the forepeak and a full-beam master midship. A third stateroom is an option, or go with the standard open atrium with couch layout — a neat hideaway nook. (For more interior details, check out the 54 Cantius Boat Test in the Lakeland Boating June 2016 issue).

Don’t fear the engine room, as there’s 6 feet of headroom and access around the twin Volvo Penta IPS 950 engines/ pod drives. That’s 725 hp each helping the 54 Fly attain cruising speeds of 31 knots at 2,300 rpm (62 gph) and WOT of 36 knots at 2,550 rpm (76 gph). Make no mistake; those powerplants are working hard for you. Interestingly, the addition of the flybridge doesn’t add noticeable weight, as it replaces the heavy sunroof and associated apparatus. But since sitting higher gives a different feel to the motion of the ocean, there is an option for a Seakeeper 9 gyro stabilization system.

More everything

With the addition of the flybridge, there’s an exponential jump in creature comforts, usability, visibility and function. What Cruisers has done is make the flybridge a destination unto itself. Climb the teak-capped floating steps and you’ll find a thoughtfully laid-out deck that can accommodate your entire party, or just the two of you. Overhead, the hardtop has a beefy integrated arch that is sized and angled to fit in with the overall style. An aft V-shaped metal stanchion and side support poles keep the hardtop solidly in place. Without the need for forward support poles, there’s 180-plus degrees of open viewing. The 14 recessed hardtop lights and four speakers will keep the party going day and night. The aft half of the deck is a plush U-shaped settee with a foldout, rotating solid teak dining table. You can easily fit six to eight people here, no problem. Or take it all for yourself and relax under the stars. On the port side is a prep station with a Kenyon electric grill and sink under the cover, and a Vitrifrigo fridge/freezer and ice machine units below. Forward to port is a second settee with an L-shaped seat

LaKeLaNDbOaTING.COM

and a teak foldout table. For a cruising couple, this is perfect for keeping the captain company or enjoying the forward view. There’s a nice seat pad forward and a built-in draining cooler.

At the con

The starboard helm doesn’t disappoint. With a commanding view and a full complement of controls and electronics, there may be no need for the lower station. On my sea trial, Matt VanGrunsven, director of marketing for KCS International (the parent company of Cruisers Yachts), had the con as we plied the Atlantic Ocean with 3- to 4-foot choppy seas, while I took some numbers and sat around the flybridge for a sense of the ride. True to form, the 54 Fly handled very well on all points of the compass. The Venturi screen helped deflect enough wind to allow us to hold a normal conversation, even at 20 knots. From the commander’s seat, the Volvo IPS joystick controller is aft of the throttle/gear shifters on the right. Depending on needs, there’s ample room for two chart displays, a VHF, a Seakeeper controller, trim tabs and more. The twin helm seat bench with armrests and swing-up bolster aids in comfort, as does the tilt steering and angled footrest on the helm’s base. Cruisers designed the helm seat to swivel inward, creating a functional perch when not underway. Additional niceties are the placement of several 110V outlets around the flybridge (to keep those phones charged), under-seat storage, an optional hatch over the staircase and under-dash access for wiring electronics. Cruisers Yachts’ 54 Cantius is a great boat. Having the option to go with the 54 Fly makes this an exceptional yacht that needs to be looked at if shopping for a mid-50-foot yacht. Cruisers did their homework. Give them an A+! ★

Cruisers Yachts 60 Fly Specifications LOA: 59'10" Beam: 16' Draft: 4'4" Weight (dry): 56,700 lbs. Fuel Capacity: 647 gals. Water Capacity: 149 gals. Base Price: $2,333,690

Cruisers Yachts 60 Fly: A Horse of a Different Color Not to be outdone by the 54 Fly, Cruisers Yachts also repurposed the 60 Cantius into the 60 Fly. SIZE DOES MATTER The largest of the Cruisers Yachts line, the 60 Fly follows the overall design concept of the series: A large aft deck with an opening bulkhead to blend the aft deck and salon into one main level entertaining area; a lower helm station; and two staterooms (an optional third room is available). Everything is larger and there’s more usable space when stepping up from the 54 Fly. There are twin Stidd seats at the lower helm, longer dinette seating with a larger table, four drawer-style fridge/freezers, dual stainless galley sinks and more. You get the idea. COME FLY AWAY Up top, Cruisers has taken the available acreage and created an oasis like no other. The center console immediately catches your eye. Wait, what? You heard that right; the helm station is in the center of the flybridge deck, and at first it looks a bit out of place. But once you study the layout and how Cruisers maximized space utilization, you realize once again that they put some thought into the design. Thanks to the low profile of the helm pod, it’s not an unsightly appendage but a comfortable workstation. Throttle control, a Volvo joystick, an engine controller and monitor, a chart display, a Seakeeper controller, trim tabs, a Polk stereo — it’s all here. Dual bench seating, tilt steering and a six-spoked leather-wrapped wheel add to the sporty feel and look. Set back a bit is the hardtop. It does cover the helm station and aft seating area, but allows for unrestricted sunbathing on the forward sunpad. Huh? Yes, in front of the helm station is a full-length, large sunpad lounger with backrest that fits two or more people. I enjoyed this space during our sea trial and have to attest: It’s a cool idea in the right spot. Even if you’re just cruising the local waterway, it’s certain to be a favorite spot on the flybridge.

Flanking the port and starboard sides are additional lounge seats with cushioned side backrests for normal seating and end backrests for full-length lounging. BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE Behind the helm bench seat is a center pod that contains a Kenyon electric grill under the cover, as well as an Isotherm fridge below. A starboard pod has a wetbar and an under-counter Isotherm icemaker. A port pod has additional capacity and storage. Strategically placed, these functional pods are situated next to the large aft U-shaped settee. Here’s an area where family and friends can gather for a meal, game time or while relaxing at anchor. It offers a great view of the swim platform so you can keep an eye on those enjoying the water. It also has a center, foldout teak table that can accommodate dinner settings for an al fresco experience. With seating for eight or more, plus all the additional seats forward, the flybridge is certain to become the destination on this yacht — unless, of course, guests opt for the bow sunpads or foredeck bench seating with two drop-in teak tables. DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS Take a look around the 60 Fly and other details will pop out, such as the side boarding gates with cutouts, a 7-foot salon settee, grabrails seemingly everywhere and hullside windows. There’s also foredeck storage compartments for lines and fenders, a fullbeam master with his/her table and seating (perfect for a vanity or mini office), a floating staircase to the lower level with leatherwrapped railings, hardwood floors and more. Not to be outdone, the 60 Fly is pretty fly on the speed curve, thanks to the twin Volvo IPS 950 diesel engines/pods. Spec numbers show an impressive range of 347 nm at 2,100 rpm and speeds of 24 knots. Push the 56,700-pound yacht to 33 knots at wide-open when conditions permit. Finding a new way to redefine a center console while adding in a plethora of features usually found on larger yachts, Cruisers Yachts once again proves that they did their homework, and they did it well. The 60 Fly should be at the head of the class. ★

hey say people from the flat prairie regions of the Midwest make good sailors, despite being born nowhere near the sea. It has something to do with being accustomed to the big sky and flat horizons, comfortable with miles and miles of open space stretching out before you, and familiar with the big water of the Great Lakes. I’m not sure exactly who “they” are, but I think there is some truth to the notion. And hailing from Manitoba — the Canadian province north of North Dakota — I am always eager to put this theory to the test, as I did last summer on the Star Clippers Cruises tall ship, the Star Flyer. Star Clippers manages to walk a fine line between cushy cruising and adventurous sailing. Demand for small ship and river barge cruising is increasing, despite the fact that cruise lines continue to make even bigger megaships. This cool company gives modern luxury a historic twist, taking passengers on a true-to-life tall ship adventure. Launched in 1991 and based in Monaco, Star Clippers operates three ships: Star Clipper, Star Flyer and Royal Clipper. These vessels are the perfect escape for sailing enthusiasts, whether you lend a hand with the rigs, climb the mast, or stare out to sea awaiting your next port of call. The ships are large enough to offer first-class indulgences, but nimble enough to navigate more intimate ports, which include destinations throughout the Caribbean and Cuba, the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, Indonesia and the Far East, plus the Panama Canal and an Atlantic Ocean crossing. I don’t mind being spoiled, so I was right at home on the Star Flyer. This classic little taste of luxury accommodates 170 guests and a crew of about 80, with 85 cabins in six categories. Outfitted with all teak decks, nautical décor, gleaming brass and regal blue velvet, the ship has ample deck space, including the bowsprit net you can lounge in, the crow’s nest you can climb and a swimming pool, which provides natural light into the lounge below it. She sails all year long, with Cannes serving as a home port during the summer months. Dinners are casual and unhurried, with snacks served throughout the day. When you tire of your book, you can pop into the library to listen to a talk, get a massage at the spa, visit the bridge or daydream on the bowsprit while planning your next trip.

Sailing the Mediterranean

My tour began in Barcelona, Spain, which had changed since the last time I visited in the 1990s. The Star Flyer’s masts and sails certainly stood out in a sea of commercial vessels, big and small. It was like we were part of a swashbuckler movie set, awaiting our walk-on cue. The island of Mallorca was our first port of call, at the resort capital of Palma de Mallorca. This port is known for the landmark gothic La Seu Cathedral that dominates the waterfront and the round Castell de Bellver that overlooks the city. The medieval streets, baroque buildings and tree-lined boulevards take you right back to the 13th century. Menorca, another island in the Balearic Islands chain, was our next stop. We docked at Mahón, a quaint and quiet town known for inventing mayonnaise (likely much to the chagrin of the French). We wandered over the cobblestones, through the 14th-century Portal de Sant Roc, the only remnant of the former city walls, and around Claustre del Carmen, a former convent that has been transformed into a marketplace and library. Museo de Menorca, which opened in 1889, is well worth a visit. We then practiced our French on the way to Bonifacio, Corsica, the city across the Strait of Bonifacio from Sardinia, where we found a beautiful fortress built on a clifftop. Ancient walls of the ninth century citadel surround Old Town, its crisscrossing narrow lanes and squares revealing something new (yet very old) at every turn. It was here I took the 187 King Aragon Steps down almost to the shoreline, following in the footsteps of Franciscan monks who carved the path into the limestone cliff to connect them to a freshwater stream. Later, after a hike along shrub-lined clifftops, I found a quiet moment on a secluded bit of shoreline and enjoyed a picnic in the sunshine.

Arriving at the Corsican city of Calvi the next day, Star Flyer anchored near a rather sleepy marina, its café chairs noticeably empty — but not for long. The small city has a population of 5,000 in the winter, which then swells to 60,000 in the summer. We hopped on a bus and wound our way up narrow country roads to the nearby villages of Catteri, Pinga and Cobara, and spent the afternoon wandering around 1,000-year-old almond trees, breathing in the scent of the wild herbs that cover the hillsides, and sampling the fresh local lemonade. The next day, we dropped anchor off the coast of Saint Tropez, the epitome of French Riviera chic. Some of those in our group climbed the hill to the Citadelle, while others headed straight to consignment stores to find the designer bargains cast off by the well-to-do, whose yachts line the so-called Millionaires’ Bay. As you can imagine, people-watching is a spectator sport in Saint Tropez. Plage de la Bouillabaisse is the closest beach if you fancy a swim, about a mile from the tender dock along the seafront road. When you’re hungry, find a marina-side restaurant that looks interesting and relax into a nice, four-hour lunch. Make sure it concludes with the town’s famous local pastry, the Tarte Tropézienne. With Star Clippers, ports of call are arranged so you can spend as much time as possible wandering around and/ or hopping on one of the daily excursions, which can be anything from touring tiny mountain villages to cycling through city gardens. Though the sailing schedule is strict, with rigid port timetables, there always seems to be time to fit everything in. This was no doubt due to the skills of Captain Mariusz Szalek, who joined the Star Clippers family in 2008. He typically spends four months at sea, followed by two months off — that’s serious shiftwork. Originally from Poland, he has experience with many different types of vessels of varying sizes, and has

sailed to many different international destinations. Years ago, Szalek says, you started out as a deck boy and worked your way up to captain. Now, there’s way more training involved. Still, “sailing isn’t something you can learn from a book,” he says. “The crew is one big machine,” Szalek says. “All the pieces have to work together to have the sailing be a success. In the old days, you would have a ship based in Poland, England or Spain, with the whole crew being the same nationality, using the same language and carrying the same national traits. Today, the Star Flyer has 18 different nations represented on-board.”

An expAnding fleet

The Star Flyer launched in 1991, with the Star Clipper following closely behind in 1992 (also accommodating 170 guests and about 80 crewmembers). The Royal Clipper, which joined the fleet in 2000, sails with 227 passengers and a crew of 106. A fourth ship will be added to the fleet within the next year: The 35-sail, five-mast Flying Clipper. It will be the largest square-rig sailing ship ever built, accommodating 300 guests and 140 crew, and powered by almost 40,000-square-feet of sail. Its design was inspired by commercial merchant sailing ship France II, a 1911 vessel built in Bourdeaux, which sank in 1922. This ship is the company’s first new build in 15 years and will sail the Mediterranean in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter. Like the other ships in Star Clippers’ fleet, the Flying Clipper will have the tropical bar as its focal point, a gathering spot for pre- and post-dinner music, lectures and briefings, some exercise classes, trivia nights and staff skits. Two plunge pools will give guests a chance to cool off, and a dramatic scuba diving pool with glass sides will descend 20 feet through two decks, letting guests watch divers head out on their dives. A watersports platform at the stern will give passengers a chance to snorkel, kayak and waterski. In the long run, my prairie background didn’t let me down on the Star Flyer. I took to tall ship sailing like a fish to water, and will happily pounce on the opportunity again should one arise. There’s just something about the combination of open sky, big sea, luxury trimmings, superb scenery and exotic locales that makes this kind of adventure an all-out thrill. H

Caribbean cruises run all winter to the end of March; from seven to 14 nights; aboard the Star Flyer and Royal Clipper; to and from Barbados and St. Maarten. The Star Flyer handles all Cuban routes, sailing from December to February for seven to 10 nights between Havana and Cienfuegos. Eastern Mediterranean trips, up to 11 days, run between Athens and Venice in the spring and summer. Western Mediterranean vacations run from the end of April to the end of October, centering around Rome, Venice and Cannes. The Star Clipper is super busy, hosting seven-night trips to Thailand and Singapore in winter, spring and fall, plus up to 14-day adventures in Indonesia in the spring, summer and fall. Atlantic crossings, three in the spring and three in the fall, can take up to 28 days, including post-cruise days that see you hanging out in Lisbon or Cannes. Bon voyage! Freshwater surfing gains popularity — even in the winter.

Great Lakes Wave Chasers T

he summer shores of Lake Michigan are a dream, lucid and blue like Taylor Swift’s eyes in the shimmering sun. The sand between my toes feels as refreshing as the Piña Colada is on my sun-drenched lips. The gentle roll of a yacht in the distance signals the arrival of another swell. Rolling walls stacked to the horizon in perfect unison march towards the shore in an open invitation: Ride me. My friend Tommy points his 9-foot longboard towards the shore and paddles with urgent gratitude for the lake’s generous offer. In one graceful, angelic lift, Tommy is in flight — a perfect balance of motion, force and foam. He glides down the glassy face as the curl chases him down the line. Seagulls are heckling me back into the water. I finish the last slurp of my drink, pick up my surfboard and happily accept the lake’s invitation to play in her warm waters. Like a needle scratching across a record, I snap out of

my daydream just as a mountainous wall of brown water explodes on top of my head. It shouts in its low, grumbling voice: “Mike, snap out of it and paddle!” The water is just a few degrees above freezing and the howling wind and sand blasts my face with ice pellets. Another wave crashes on top of me, causing a brain freeze. The pain in my head gives way to merciful numbness, and I finally paddle through the rapidly successive whitewater. I’m now aware of a new pain around my mouth: I’m smiling, causing the icicles forming on my face to pull on my skin. Why the hell am I smiling, then, you ask? Because this is lake surfing, and I love it! Ironically, the best waves happen during the worst weather; the lake rarely has waves in the summer. The best season for lake surfing is from September until January, before the water turns to solid ice, forcing local surfers to find new ways of punishing themselves.

Waves are formed when high winds blow over a stretch of water. Ocean waves are created from storms thousands of miles away that create a ground swell, whereas lake waves are more often the result of winds from a heavy local storm. The shorter fetch (the distance wind travels over water) of the Great Lakes makes predicting waves much more difficult than in the ocean. Most lake surfers have a daily ritual of burying themselves in surf forecasting sites, carefully studying the winds and swell directions in hopes of finding surfable waves. Heavy winds pushing against 300 miles of open water can create huge waves. As a reference, Lake Superior is 349.8 miles long. The bottom of the Great Lakes are littered with examples of the lake’s power, including the 729-foot SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in Lake Superior in 1975 from waves in excess of 30 feet. The Great Lakes contain more coastline than the east and west coasts of America combined, offering many nooks and crannies to find waves. But the search isn’t easy. Needless to say, if you have a car and some motivation, you have an adventure worthy of a surf movie. And if the waves aren’t big enough, you can always paddleboard or wakesurf. Lake surfers are some of the most dedicated wave riders in the world. We surf in the worst conditions and drive from state to state, sometimes for more than eight hours, just to find waves. The chase for waves is typically a chase towards low-pressure systems. Since the forecasting isn’t as accurate as the ocean, some road trips result in no waves at all.

Lake surfing roots

Midwest surf historians say that surfing on the Great Lakes originated in the early 1950s in Grand Haven, Michigan when a man named Doc “Makaha Dave” Seibold brought the sport home from his time stationed in the Army in Hawaii. However, there are photos pre-dating Makaha Dave of people paddleboard surfing the lakes in Grand Haven at Pole Pier in 1907 (not to be confused with the modern version of stand-up paddleboarding). One of the most influential surfers of all time, Tom Blake, got his

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

start as a lake surfer off the coast of Lake Michigan. Blake was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1902 and went on to become a pioneer in the modernization of the sport. Lake surfing has boomed and is even represented in the Hollywood animated movie, “Surf’s Up.” The movie features Chicken Joe from Sheboygan, Wisconsin — a character based on Larry Williams, another notorious lake surfer. Sheboygan, also known as the “Malibu of the Midwest,” is where Larry and his twin brother Lee started their freshwater passion. They have been surfing the lake for more than 50 years and have been featured in books, articles and surf documentaries. A book called “Some Like it Cold” details the brothers’ history on the lake. Sheboygan is one of the places that can accommodate many surfers at one time without people getting in each other’s way; not all Great Lakes surfing locations are like this.

Surfing safety

Lake surf spots are not as crowded as your average California hot spots, but are getting more popular each year. The great equalizer is the cold, when the winter weather sets in and significantly reduces the number of people in the water. Some locations in the past year have had more than 40 people battling for the same wave, when in previous years you would only see a handful. With crowded lineups and lots of lake surfing newbies, things can get dangerous; surfers can run into each other, and since fins are sharp, they can slice you right open. A board to the noggin is no fun either. Serious injuries caused by crowds are starting to happen more often. On top of that, the more people battling for the same wave, the less rides each surfer gets. A few fights have actually broken out, which is something that was rare on the lakes and more commonplace at crowded ocean breaks. Because of this, surfers have become tight-lipped about where the best surfing spots are (hence, the reason none of the photos featured in this article give details on the actual location).

Northern Lake Michigan in November — with Lester Priday, Burton Hathaway, Will Wall and Dave Meisinge

However, the positives definitely outweigh the negatives. Despite the struggles and difficulties of surfing on the lakes, the sport has gained immense popularity. Third Coast Surf Shop in New Buffalo, Michigan has done so well that they opened a second store in St. Joseph, Michigan. Surfing on freshwater isn’t for the faint of heart. Compared to saltwater, lake surfing has a shorter period between the waves, which makes it harder to paddle out. While the waves usually have less power than ocean waves, the threat of extreme weather conditions and hypothermia make lake surfing its own brand of dangerous. In winter months, it’s not uncommon to see huge chunks of ice floating in the lineup. The one upside to lake surfing is you don’t have to worry about sharks. I am not a super tough guy — my girlfriend will be the first to agree — but I still manage to surf when it’s well below freezing with the help of a wetsuit. Modern wetsuits have evolved so that they are flexible enough to paddle in and warm enough to keep you from freezing to death. Lake surfers wear wetsuits that are about twice as thick as saltwater surfers. A 4 mm wetsuit is considered a coldwater suit in California. The standard lake wetsuit is 6 mm in the chest, 5 mm on the extremities and 7 mm for boots, mittens and hood. All that extra neoprene makes it a lot harder to paddle and kills your endurance, but that’s the price of admission if you want to surf the Great Lakes when the waves are at their best. You really don’t feel that cold until your face goes underwater: Then things change. Some of the most iconic photos of lake surfing are not of the waves themselves, but the surfers with beards encrusted in ice. On the coldest of days, I can usually last a few hours in the water before my toes go numb. But surfing the lakes isn’t all about danger. It’s relatively safe when the waves are small and you are a decent swimmer. Surfers have actually saved many swimmers. Dave Benjamin of Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project (GLSRP.ORG) says that surfers likely make many rescues each year. Surfers often have the knowledge and experience of how to handle waves

Did you know? A cubic meter of water weighs about a ton. That is a lot of weight crashing down on you. The good news for lake surfers is that freshwater is lighter than saltwater at the same temperature. A gallon of saltwater weighs roughly 8.6 pounds, whereas a gallon of freshwater weighs roughly 8.36 pounds.

and dangerous currents. They will also have a flotation device with them and are dressed for the cold water. Want to try it out? Beginners should start surfing in the summer on a small-wave day and away from the more experienced surfers. To skip many hours of frustration, it may be smart to start with surfing lessons. So the next time you are stuck inside this winter during a snowstorm, and your boat sits all alone in dry-storage, remember that there are surfers out there still having a blast on our wonderful Great Lakes. ★ About the Author: Mike Calabro is a freelance photojournalist and commercial photographer. here is a moment in Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 novella, “The Torrents of Spring,” when the soul-searching protagonist,

Michigan, in the middle of a snowstorm. Adrift, unhappy and in the midst of an existential crisis, the bewildered Scripps looks at the sky above and wonders if it is in fact the sky. He feels a gust of warm Chinook wind and wonders, too, if that could be the warm Chinook wind. Was it true, as he had been told, that spring was not far behind? Finally, he looks at the station’s signboard labeled “Petoskey, Michigan,” and asks himself: Does that signboard truly read “Petoskey, Michigan”? And, if so, could this place really be Petoskey, Michigan? In fact, it was — for Scripps and for Hemingway — as it is for countless other seeking souls, Petoskey, Michigan, a place whose otherworldly charm makes it PHOTO COURTESY OF PETOSKEYAREA.COM

Unlike Scripps, you likely won’t arrive in Petoskey between wives and by way of Mancelona, a northwest Michigan town to the east. You’ll drift in the way the ancestors of the area’s Native Americans, the Anishnaabek tribe, did: Floating atop the azure ripples of Little Traverse Bay from Lake Michigan. The bay, about 170 feet deep and 8 miles across at its widest point, is Lake Michigan’s fourth largest. Its shore links four of the most picturesque burgs at the tip of Michigan’s mitten: The city of Harbor Springs to the north, the Victorian-era cottage enclave of Bay View to the southeast, the city of Petoskey (just 3.5 miles across the water from Harbor Springs) at the southern base, and the Bay Harbor community at the southern tip of the bay’s opening. Petoskey’s recently expanded 144-slip city marina — whose transient dockage is open from May through October — offers a tantalizing deal for any boater who wants to spend just a few hours poking around the city’s 170 bustling boutiques and outstanding eateries: Free short-term shopping dockage in the best slip available. But before you hail the marina on Channel 16 to find out which slip will welcome your abbreviated stint, consider instead setting your sights on one of the marina’s 72 slips designated for transient use. You likely won’t need to stay the maximum 14 days allowed (a limit that’s waived if open slips are available after day 14), but few could blame you for wanting to. Petoskey’s City Marina offers updated and always clean restrooms, showers and laundry facilities; a renovated lounge with a HDTV, cable and internet; improved marina-wide Wi-Fi; and loads of small but significant family-friendly essentials like picnic areas (both open and sheltered), a change machine, a vending machine and a playground with a viewing telescope that tot mariners love. As for the practical stuff, most slips boast a 7-foot depth, and a few go to 10 feet. You’ll find spring pilings between each slip; 30-, 50-, and 100-amp power; premium ethanol-free gasoline and diesel with ValvTect; multiple pump-out locations; water hookups; block and cubed ice; and an exceptionally trained, friendly staff.

slots, table games, a poker room, fine and casual dining and nightlife options. Both are a quick taxi or shuttle ride away. Likewise, the marina’s courtesy bikes and the city’s weekend trolley are available to take you to Petoskey’s downtown. But truth be told, you probably won’t need either; downtown Petoskey is not only delightfully walkable but is also steps away from the marina via a safe pedestrian tunnel. Named one of the “Best Small Towns in America” by Smithsonian magazine, the wee downtown of Petoskey packs a seriously large wallop of arts, culture, shopping and dining opportunities along its gently sloping streets. At the heart of it all is the downtown’s famed Gaslight District. A glowing nod to the city’s Victorian roots, the warm streetlamp lights cast an incomparably quaint ambiance over its clusters of shops, galleries and restaurants, giving today’s visitors a glimpse of the city’s earliest incarnation as a vacation destination. Thanks to the northward expansion of the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad, Petoskey in the early 1870s became far more than the safe harbor it had long been for fur traders and missionaries trekking up and down the coast; it became a luxury resort town that drew trainloads of wealthy Chicagoans and Detroiters in search of respite and renewed health in the cool breezes off Little Traverse Bay. A modest holdover from the city’s time as a purveyor of miracle cures can be found today on the south side of East and West Lake streets between Bayfront Drive and Quaintance Avenue: Mineral Springs Park, whose natural mineral springs — purported to cure whatever ails you — were often tapped, capped and transported home by locals and visitors alike.

Overnight success

A harder-to-miss beacon of Petoskey’s Victorian heyday is Stafford’s Perry Hotel. Erected in 1899 by Dr. Norman J. Perry, a grieving dentist who dumped his clinical profession after a tooth extraction killed his patient, The Hotel Perry was one of 21 grand hotels standing in Petoskey in 1900. It would endure longer than any other, however, for one simple reason: Unlike the others of that kerosene-fueled era, The Hotel Perry was made of brick, not wood. Today, its turn-of-the-century charm and style is fully intact, along with modern conveniences like private, in-room baths in each of the hotel’s 79 rooms, air conditioning throughout the hotel and a well-wired business center. Should you opt to stay a night at Stafford’s, do yourself a favor — step back to a time when carbs didn’t matter and indulge in the hotel’s malted Belgian waffle with fresh strawberries, ginger, toasted almond and crème chantilly. You’ll find this palatial treat in the hotel’s H.O. Rose Dining Room, whose sweeping views of Little Traverse Bay are a fitting tribute to the city’s legendary Captain Hiram Obed Rose. Considered the father of Petoskey, Rose arrived in the burgeoning community in 1873, when it was still known

A tour of Kilwins Chocolate Kitchen is a must-see for the whole family while you’re in the area. They have been a celebrated part of Northern Michigan since they were founded in 1947 by Don and Katy Kilwin. The tradition continues today with the highest quality confections made from premium ingredients —using original recipes and a warm, friendly customer experience. With more than 108 stores in 22 states, Kilwins is where people celebrate and share the experience of life, family and gifting in a nostalgic Americana setting. A box of the world’s best Mackinac Island fudge is the perfect gift for those back home... if it makes it back! If it’s arts and culture you seek, you’ll find oodles of art — paintings, furniture, artisan jewelry, ceramics and more — in the many shops and dedicated galleries dotting the town. But you’ll find a veritable cornucopia of it, as well as concerts, dance, live theater and other events, inside the breathtaking 130-plus-year-old church that is Crooked Tree Arts Center. Three Thursdays each month during summer, Crooked Tree hosts live music in its neighboring Bidwell Plaza. It also sponsors live concerts — folk, jazz, strings, rock and more — several times each week from noon to 1 p.m. in downtown’s Pennsylvania Park. Every Friday morning from June through September, you can stock up on the freshest provisions in town at the Downtown Petoskey Farmers Market. Nearly 30 vendors of fish, meat, herbs, fruits, veggies and more line the 400 block of Howard Street. No matter what you do in Petoskey, don’t leave without taking in one of the city’s million dollar sunsets. Except for the deck of your own floating kingdom, the best places to watch that ball o’ fire sink into Lake Michigan’s waves is the aptly named Sunset Park overlooking the harbor, or Bayfront Park, directly adjacent to the marina. Should you take the marina up on its offer of courtesy bikes before you leave Petoskey, leave Petoskey. A quick roll north on the Little Traverse Wheelway — a paved, non-motorized path that runs about 23 miles along the coast between Charlevoix, south of Petoskey, and Harbor Springs — brings you to one of the prettiest places in northern Michigan: Petoskey State Park, home to camping, hiking trails, beaches, dunes, playgrounds and, of course, Petoskey Stones, the fossilized coral remnants of Michigan’s ice age. Is it unreal that all this exists within just 5.2-square-miles on Lake Michigan’s shore? It might at first seem so. But whether or not you’re feeling as lost when you come ashore as Scripps O’Neill did at the train station, chances are you’ll find whatever you’re looking for in Petoskey. Even the fictional Scripps’ very real train station, once a part of the fabled Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad line, is now the Pennsylvania Plaza Office Complex at the corner of Bay and Lewis streets. Did that signboard truly read “Petoskey, Michigan”? And, if so, could this place really be Petoskey, Michigan? It was once and it is still. Savor every inch before you ship back out. ★

home like this comes on the market once in a blue moon. With a private, sheltered marina in the front yard of this classic northern Michigan log home and sweeping 180-degree views of Lake Charlevoix’s main basin, you’ll have a hard time finding a property that compares. “It’s very unique to have your own marina in front of your home where you can dock up to a 70-foot boat,” says realtor Pat O’Brien. “This is not something you’re going to be able to repeat on Lake Charlevoix.” The calm, protected bay can accommodate several large boats; invite your seafaring friends over to entertain on the indoor/outdoor porch, which opens thanks to a 25-foot Nana Door wall system. West-facing views, an outdoor kitchen and a fire pit will make for a memorable cocktail hour. The spectacular plot of land features a sandy beach and a meticulously landscaped lawn. Inside, the six-bedroom, four-bathroom log home provides an open yet cozy layout. Enjoy the crackle of the wood-burning fieldstone fireplace — visible from the great room, chef’s kitchen and screened-in porch — as you

pour a glass of wine from the bar, which is illuminated by an eye-catching canoe light fixture. Knotty pine cathedral ceilings in the great room add to the open yet homey atmosphere. The impressive kitchen, with walk-in pantry and prep kitchen, features polished concrete countertops, a unique stone-framed commercial-grade gas range, a 16-foot island and a three-basin sink. An additional living room with a second kitchen provides guests with a private space to brew a pot of coffee or fix a snack. Need more space? The detached guesthouse/office provides roughly 800-1,000 additional square feet, and is equipped with a bathroom and kitchenette. A connected 40- by 40-foot storage building is the perfect place to house water toys and accessories. Activities are limitless no matter the season, thanks to the home’s proximity to Boyne City, Petoskey and Charlevoix. Head to Boyne Mountain for a day of skiing or take off on a snowmobile adventure. If you’re in search of a private, lakeside retreat, slip into this one-of-a-kind marina and call it home. ★

t often takes just one small spark of an idea to successfully launch a company. For Hurley Marine — a boat accessory manufacturer based in Escanaba, Michigan — that first igniting spark took the form of the Hurley Marine Dinghy Davit. More than a decade and a few flagship products later, Hurley Marine has grown into a global business and a well-respected name in the boating industry. Todd Hurley, founder of Hurley Marine and a U.S. Merchant Marine captain, says the idea for the Dinghy Davit came to him in “a moment of ingenuity.” The Dinghy Davit is a platform that attaches to the back of a boat, providing storage space for a dinghy, tender or Jet Ski. Today, the Dinghy Davit is still one of Hurley Marine’s most popular offerings. It’s sold in a variety of sizes and styles, and the company says next year they will launch an extension for use with their H3O Davits and smaller swim platforms. “Hurley Marine was born from a passionate boater solving boating needs,” Hurley says. “Our mission is not about gaining huge profits. We care about people because by choosing our store, you are giving us a chance to change a small part of your world.”

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

The second product to put Hurley Marine on the map was the company’s Trim Tab Lights. The lights can be mounted on a boat’s hull, eliminating the need for boaters to drill holes in the hull during installation. Today, Hurley Marine’s line of products has grown. In addition to these flagship items, Hurley also manufactures Muskrat Guards, boat and dock signs, Fish ConTroll and a number of other accessories. Fish ConTroll adjusts a boat’s throttle to maintain a desired speed based on a built-in GPS receiver; it’s basically cruise control for your boat. Hurley’s passion to make the boating experience easier extends from his products to the company itself. Hurley says the company is particularly known for its customer service, and boaters are encouraged to contact the Escanaba office with questions. “Since the beginning, our team has extended its passion to sell premium quality goods for your boating needs,” Hurley says. “We are confident that these systems will continue to inspire boaters and will allow for nautical outings they pursue and deserve.” ★

CLASSIC CRAFTS by Kate Bush

Crush

ADD YOUR BOAT

88

Crush is an unrestored 1977 Glastron CVX-16 Deluxe, complete with her original Mercury 115. Glastron enthusiasts refer to the two-stroke inline-6 outboard as the “Tower of Power,” which can propel this boat to speeds exceeding 55 mph. Glastrons were always known for their performance, sexy style and eye-catching paint jobs. Their reputation was further bolstered by prominent placement in James Bond films of the time such as “Live and Let Die” (1974), “Moonraker” (1979) and “A View to Kill” (1985). In “Live and Let Die,” James Bond uses a Glastron GT150 speedboat in a thrilling chase through Louisiana marshes. In the days before computer-enhanced graphics, the boat made a record-breaking 120-foot jump. Original boats like this one are rare due to the nature of the metal flake in the gelcoat. The metallic elements in the pigment heat up from the sun and over time degrade the gelcoat, causing fading, chalking or blistering. As a result, the vast majority of original Glastrons in service have been repainted or re-gelled. The old outboards can also be problematic; plagued by ethanol in modern fuels and limited availability of service parts, many have been relegated to the scrap heap. We found Crush in Florida during a visit to the Antique and Classic Boat Society’s (ACBS) Sunnyland Chapter boat show; while walking through the land displays, a flash of orange caught our eye. It was love at first sight — a crush! We learned that this boat had been donated and was being auctioned to support the chapter’s excellent and well-run youth apprenticeship program. We also knew this boat would be very well suited for our small inland lake. We returned to Michigan with our little orange Crush affixed to our trailer’s hitch. Crush was the perfect boat for us last summer. It also attracted appreciative glances from the next generation of classic boaters when it was displayed at the ACBS Michigan Chapter’s Algonac Boat Show last June. We look forward to enjoying this boat on our lake and at ACBS boat shows in the future to attract people to the hobby who grew up on classic fiberglass. —Scott and Shannon Knight, Waterford, Michigan Email kbush@lakelandboating.com if you have a Classic Craft with a good story to share!
