Sanctuary of the Great Lakes: Woods and water. Fossils and fishing. Sinkholes and stars. Alpena, Michigan’s natural attributes initially shaped its history as a Lake Huron fishing port and lumbering center. After the forests were depleted, limestone for cement production helped the city continue to thrive. Located on Thunder Bay, a natural harbor and port of refuge, the area’s maritime history is accessible at several lighthouses and underwater at the country’s only freshwater marine sanctuary. by Kath Usitalo ....................................................................................................................

FROM THE HELM by Kate Bush

New Year, New Goals Make the most of 2017. akeland Boating magazine is now Kate, second from in its 71st year of publication, and right, boating with her family on Lake with that comes a new year with a new Charlevoix. set of goals and resolutions. For the magazine, we aim to discover uncharted Great Lakes ports; sea trial the latest boats on the market; and continue to find fresh ways to display our content. Personally, I resolve to spend less time in front of a screen and more face time with family — and if I’m lucky, that time will be spent out on the water. If your resolution is also to get outdoors, one Great Lakes destination that’s sure to be a hit with the family is Alpena, Michigan (p. 46). This small town on the western coast of Lake Huron is ripe for exploration. Dive the many shipwrecks in the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, peek down into deep sinkholes, climb iconic lighthouses and maybe even witness the Aurora Borealis at one of Alpena’s Dark Sky Parks. If your resolution is to dot more t’s and cross more i’s this year, check out our feature on expecting the unexpected with marine insurance (p. 44). Top marine insurance providers shared interesting claims with us that will hopefully teach us all a lesson: Be prepared! If you resolve to pick up speed, hop aboard the Formula 430 SSC (p. 36), and if you resolve to better weather the storm, the SARGO 31 might just be your dreamboat (p. 40) Whatever your resolution may be, I hope that the coming year brings you peace, health and happiness. Mail Call I haven’t had time to look at the new issue, but I immediately recognized the cover photo (background) as Spyglass Hill condos behind Holland State Park. We live about 6 miles north of there and have seen that view from our boat and Sea-Doos many times. Certainly a fitting shot since Tiara is made here in Holland. CANINE CREW Jackson Here is a photo of our wonderful boating dog, Jackson. He is now gone but boated with us on the Great Lakes for more than a dozen years. Our homeport has been Frankfort, Michigan, and he made it as far as the North Channel and through the Sault locks to Lake Superior. Our 31-foot Silverton has a three-wide front seat and he was always seated on the far left corner when we were out on the water. He was a true boating dog! —Tim and Laurene Grunwald on The Cure, Frankfort, MI Calling all Canine (and Feline) Crew!

MARITIME TRIVIA Courtesy of The Marine Art of J. Clary

The answer to last month’s question, “How was mineral cordierite used as a major advancement in Viking navigation?” is: By positioning the cordierite crystal until it turned dark, a mariner could determine the position of the sun.

Seakeeper 3 Keeps Small Boats Steady

Seakeeper’s latest model, the Seakeeper 3, is its smallest and most powerful gyroscope yet.

The Seakeeper 3 continues in the way of its predecessors, eliminating up to 95 percent of seasickness-causing boat roll. Specifically designed for boats between 30 and 39 feet, the Seakeeper 3 is 30 percent lighter and 25 percent smaller than any other model. This new model also runs exclusively on 12-volt DC power and has a newly designed touch-screen control panel. Orders for the Seakeeper 3 can be placed now for shipment beginning in spring 2017. For more information,

There are some exciting changes to the 2017 Mighty Mac Swim in northern Michigan. Usually held on Labor Day, the Mighty Mac Swim will now take place on the second Saturday of August (this year August 12). Funds raised through the Mighty Mac Swim will now go towards building a home for the family of a “deserving American hero,” and other home improvement projects for veterans and first responders across the state through Habitat for Humanity of Michigan. In an unprecedented event called “HouseBoat for Heroes,” Mighty Mac Swim Director Jim Dreyer, also an ultra-marathon strength athlete, will attempt to tow building supplies on a barge for more than 4 miles across the turbulent Straits of Mackinac. This new event is planned to begin the morning of August 5, 2017. All totaled, the weight of Dreyer’s load will be approximately 18 tons. Once the cargo arrives at the dock of the Mackinac Bridge Authority, volunteers will frame the home on August 8. The Mighty Mac Swim has raised more than $630,000 in its first two years. Online Portal Tracks Invasive Species

The fight against invasive species overrunning the Great Lakes is now online. The Great Lakes Commission has developed the Great Lakes Detector of Invasive Aquatics in Trade (GLDIATR), a web data-mining tool that aims to identify aquatic invasive species moving through online trade networks to the Great Lakes region. GLDIATR has been used to reach out to a number of online sellers suspected of supplying invasive species — for instance, for aquariums or educational purposes — with information about the regulations and impact of invasive species. The EPA and Great Lakes Restoration Initiative fund GLDIATR through grants. Visit GLC.ORG to learn more.

What’s premier in my life? One thing rises above all others. It’s what inspired us to reinvent the boating industry 25 years ago. It’s what keeps us passionate about quality each and every day. It’s why we remain proudly independent and family-owned. And it’s why leadership is forever embedded in our name. Ask yourself, do you want a pontoon, or do you want a Premier?

Muskoka Wharf Take a step back in time at this Ontario weekend getaway. e sat on the deck leisurely sipping our wine, with the late summer sun warming our faces and painting the ripples on the water a dazzling silver hue. We watched as loons paddled in the distance, as smoke billowed from the stack of a century-old steamship and as gleaming boats full of tanned passengers pulled up alongside the docks. A couple strolled hand-in-hand along the 2,000-foot boardwalk ringing the bay, while a lone gentleman sat on a bench at the end of a dock savoring the tranquility of the setting. We felt lazy and relaxed. How could you not? The breezes are surprisingly balmy, the living is laidback and everything revolves around the sparkling water. And yet there is an unmistakable energy here — a vibrancy that says Gravenhurst, Ontario’s Muskoka Wharf is the place to be.

Wenonah II coming into port.

Gateway to Muskoka Gravenhurst’s fortunes have always been linked to its waterfront. The wharves built along the shores of Muskoka Bay first served as a stepping-off point for settlers entering the wilds of Muskoka in the 1860s, and later as a link to luxury resorts along the shoreline. Gravenhurst, for good reason, was called the Gateway to Muskoka. A sight far removed from today’s attractive vistas and pleasant park-like setting greeted tourists arriving at Muskoka Wharf in the late 19th century. More than a dozen ramshackle and noisy sawmills lined the bay, each one spitting smoke into the air and debris into the water. The landscape was a barren moonscape of rocks and stumps, the forests denuded of trees to feed the insatiable hunger of the saws. Muskoka Bay was clogged with logs, and vast piles of sawdust lined the shores. By the mid-20th century, the mills were gone and the last steamships were rotting along the docks. Muskoka Wharf grew eerily silent and obsolete. Until now, that is. In the last decade, an 89-acre development has restored a luster to Muskoka Wharf, featuring tourist Gravenhurst Bay

attractions, boutique shops, lakeside boardwalks and a number of restaurants with decks overlooking the water — including Boston Pizza and the fine dining Dock of the Bay (DOCKOFTHEBAY.CA), which has live music in the evenings and the best king crab cakes you’ve ever had. Charming steamships The lead attractions of the newly revitalized Muskoka Wharf are undoubtedly the steamships that continue the 150-year-old tradition of carrying passengers across the Muskoka Lakes. Book a cruise and slip back in time aboard one of two nostalgic vessels. The R.M.S Segwun, the oldest operating steamship in North America, is a charming vessel where coal is still hand-shoveled into boilers, and black smoke coils around the stack. Her sister-ship, the Wenonah II, was built in the 1990s but retains all of the historic charm of a turn-of-the-century steamship. The experience aboard either ship is timeless and unforgettable. Leaning over the railings, you can watch the rock and pine shoreline glide past at a leisurely 5 knots, wave at smaller motorboats whizzing by and admire the stately summer estates belonging to the rich and famous. There are a variety of excursions to choose from, but the most spectacular is the sunset dinner cruise aboard the Segwun. You’ll enjoy a fine meal in the ship’s dining room, where wealthy passengers would also have dined a century ago. Then, pleasantly full, you’ll want to climb up to the deck and watch the golden sun dip below the horizon. Make sure to climb up to the pilothouse and introduce yourself to Captain Phil; he’ll regale you with stories about the history of this majestic old steamship. A ticket for passage aboard the vessels comes with free admission to the Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre – Grace and Speed (REALMUSKOKA.COM), located just across the bay. The Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre is devoted to exploring the history of the steamships and luxury hotels that came to define the region. The world-class museum includes a number of interactive exhibits, including North America’s largest collection of in-water antique wooden boats. Visit Gravenhurst Gravenhurst enjoys the distinction of being the first town in Muskoka, both historically and geographically (as you drive north along the Highway 11 corridor). There’s a lot to see and do in this lakeside community of 10,000. Doctor Henry Norman Bethune, an international hero, was born and raised here. A physician, inventor, educator, activist and artist, he is best remembered for the last two years of his life, which were spent in war-torn China serving as a surgeon and teacher for peasants oppressed

DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier

Slippery When Wet Refresh your nonskid flooring with these gripping options.

T

here’s nothing more hazardous than safety equipment that seems functional but fails when it’s needed the most. A perfect example of this is worn nonskid flooring, which may provide adequate footing when dry but becomes dangerously slippery during wet or stormy conditions. Here’s a look at nonskid choices to keep your boat from resembling an ice-coated set of steps during a brutal Midwest winter.

(Top) Removing failed nonskid is something the whole family can enjoy. (Bottom) As with any project, proper preparation, such as careful masking, is the key to successful nonskid application.

What about teak? Many believe a traditional teak deck looks better and provides better traction than any modern nonskid. The first may be an opinion, but teak’s reputation as a natural nonskid is well deserved. Installation of a new teak deck is certainly an option, but there are downsides, particularly when compared to modern choices; these include price (both from a material and installation standpoint), added weight and susceptibility to staining, which make a teak deck more maintenance intensive. Teak oils and improper cleaning methods (the use of a power washer, for example) ruin teak natural nonskid properties. You do have the option of letting it go au natural, but many find the gray color teak reverts to unappealing. Grit-type nonskid As mentioned earlier, nonskid deck paints use some form of “grit” or media to provide traction, such as graded/ sifted sand, crushed walnut shells or polymer beads. Larger, sharper grit produces the best traction but is less friendly to

Basic Installation Tips While installation will vary depending on which nonskid option you choose, here are some basic tips that can be applied to most any installation. ■ Prep the surface as per the manufacturer: This will commonly involve washing the deck with a mild boat soap to remove dirt, grease and other contaminants. Allow it to dry, then sand with an orbital sander using 60-grit paper to both level the area and scuff the old surface. Finish with 120-grit paper, vacuum up any dust, and wipe down the surface with a rag and 202 Fiberglass Solvent Wash. Replace the rag as it picks up residue. ■ Good taping makes good results: Careful masking (straight lines, curved corners, etc.) when applying nonskid paint will help give your finished project a professional look. For cleaner edges, allow paint to set up for about 30 minutes before removing masking tape. Don’t wait until fully dry, however, as the tape will be more difficult to remove.

bare feet while lounging around the deck (or worse, during an unexpected fall). Conversely, fine grit is less aggressive on skin but provides less traction. Other considerations include the use of one or two parts paint (the former being cheaper, the latter being more durable) and color selection. Lighter colors are cooler to the touch, but can produce more glare and tend to show dirt more readily. Depending on the product used, the grit itself can come premixed in nonskid paint, be sold as an additive for mixing into deck paint prior to application, or be sprinkled on top of wet deck paint. Products such as Durabak (NONSLIPCOATING.COM), Epifanes Nonskid Deckcoating (EPIFANES.COM) , Interlux Interdeck

Nonskid options When the factory-molded nonskid of a typical fiberglass boat becomes worn, owners have a number of aftermarket options to choose from, each with pros and cons. Considerations such as cost and durability are certainly important, but so are factors like ease of installation. The ultimate goal is a nonskid surface that not only meets these concerns, but is also effective in extreme conditions while providing a comfortable feel underfoot. The most common nonskid replacement options can be loosely divided into three categories: Deck paints with a gritty traction material added; deck paints featuring a textured surface; and nonskid mats or coverings that adhere in place.

Smooth Cruising Seakeeper’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing Andrew Semprevivo introduces a stabilizing gyro for Great Lakes boats 30-39 feet. LB: We understand that Seakeeper gyro stabilizers provide exceptional stabilization, virtually eliminating roll and thus preventing seasickness. What is new about the Seakeeper 3?

44425 Pecan Ct. #151 California, Maryland 20619 410-326-1590 SEAKEEPER.COM

LB: What are other benefits of the Seakeeper 3?

Semprevivo: Another huge benefit is the flexibility it offers for installation. We have designed a custom leaning post foundation that allows you to install the Seakeeper 3 within a leaning post. For small center consoles, your boat could be in and out of the shop in as little as two days. LB: How does a Seakeeper work?

Semprevivo: A Seakeeper applies the physics of gyroscopes — long used for stabilization and orientation — to eliminate up to 95 percent of boat roll. Inside a vacuum encapsulation, a flywheel spins at speeds of up to 10,700 rpm. When the boat rolls, the gyro tilts fore and aft, producing a powerful gyroscopic torque to port and starboard to counteract the boat roll. LB: What types of boats will accommodate a retrofitted Seakeeper?

Semprevivo: Seakeeper has become a must-have on new builds, which has driven demand and increased awareness of the gyro among current boat owners. A growing number of owners want to refit their current boats with this latest and greatest technology in the marine industry. Seakeeper’s refits stretch across most brands and models. Because of this ever-growing portfolio, we can supply a scope of work and an estimated cost immediately in most cases. ELIZABETH ALTICK specializes in recreational marine, cultural and humaninterest subjects. She was formerly executive editor of a recreational boating magazine.

LB: Do different boats require different gyros?

Semprevivo: Yes; ensuring you have the highest level of stabilization while out on the water is important to us. We look at every Seakeeper installation individually and customize our product recommendations accordingly. We don’t want to simply reduce roll — we aim to eliminate it!

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

LB: How is the Seakeeper 3 powered?

Semprevivo: This Seakeeper model is powered by 12V DC power. The power demand is extremely low thanks to the vacuum encapsulation. LB: How does a boater operate the Seakeeper?

Semprevivo: Operation couldn’t be easier than with our intuitive touch-screen display. Simply turn it on and allow the gyro to spool up, and then the Seakeeper can be activated. Just two quick touches of a button and your boat is fully stabilized. Our smart technology adapts to changes in sea state automatically. LB: Are there any speed or sea condition limitations?

Semprevivo: There are no limitations; it is effective in all sea conditions and eliminates boat roll both at speed and at rest. LB: Where on the boat is the gyro installed? Does it take up much room?

Semprevivo: The Seakeeper can be installed virtually anywhere on-board. Depending on the needs of a particular vessel, any number of units can be installed to reach optimal performance. Seakeeper takes up a small percentage of the boat’s total volume. LB: Do most boat dealers know how to install the Seakeeper?

Semprevivo: We have created a global network of certified refit installers. To find a service center near you, visit SEAKEEPER.COM/FINDUS.

LB: How much does the Seakeeper 3 cost?

Semprevivo: The suggested retail price is $26,900. LB: How can an owner see how it works?

Semprevivo: We have demos at many boat shows across the nation and can also schedule demos with our brand ambassadors globally. Visit SEAKEEPER.COM/TAKEARIDE. ★

CONTACT Seakeeper

Semprevivo: Seakeeper is here for small boats! Our first step toward stabilization for the boating mainstream was the Seakeeper 5, optimized for boats between 40 and 49 feet. The new Seakeeper 3 is a smaller, lighter gyro specifically designed for 30- to 39-foot boats. It’s 30 percent lighter, 25 percent smaller and still eliminates up to 95 percent of boat roll, making every trip out on the water more enjoyable for everyone on-board. Since it runs solely on DC power, there is no need for a generator.

SAFETY FIRST by Helen Aitken

Is Your Safety Insured? Take the quiz to see if you’re well-informed on marine insurance.

B

oating safety depends on many helpers: A VHF radio, a first aid kit, an accurate chart or chartplotter, even high-tech equipment. These items help ensure a safe boating season, but are you insured for complete peace of mind? Take the quiz and see.

PHOTO COURTESY OF U.S. COAST GUARD

True or False T/F 1. Not every state requires boat insurance; however, all Great Lakes states require boat insurance. T/F 2. Homeowner’s insurance covers boat accidents, liability or general use in the water. T/F 3. Basic insurance covers claims for sea towing, salvage, running out of gas, mishaps while trailering a boat and while cruising across international borders. T/F 4. Insurance premiums may be lower for freshwater boating, reduced boating time, using winter storage, successfully completing a boating course and passing a vessel safety check. T/F 5. Lapsing warranties on items like engines are covered with standard insurance. T/F 6. Increased premiums occur with poor driving records, a BUI, increased yacht size and depending on types of fishing: Commercial fishing, competition fishing or recreational fishing boats. T/F 7. Every Great Lakes state has age requirements for operating a powerboat, sailboat or personal watercraft, and a requirement for passing a boating education class, like America’s Boating Course, in order to operate a boat. The operator must carry the education card; without it, a fine is possible. T/F 8. Insurance companies should disclose the claim process: Making a claim, payment period and who arranges for service. T/F 9. Renewing policies may be done over the phone or online to create immediate coverage. T/F 10. The best insurance coverage comes from A-rated companies with 24/7 coverage and paid-up premiums that cover basic emergency scenarios, with deductibles. Answers 1. TRUE There are different kinds of basic boat insurance and specialty, supplemental policies; they vary by coverage, cost and personal need. Basic policies cover boat type, size and age (new boats depreciate after leaving the dealer), and premiums are determined by the Blue Book value multiplied by approximately 15 percent. Supplemental policies cover other specialty topics. 2. FALSE Homeowner policies may limit coverage without riders, like severe weather damage. Adding marine-specific

insurance is prudent for accidents to and from your boat, injuries to passengers or others, or medical costs. Marinas may also require extended coverage for spills, pollution and dock damage. 3. FALSE Mishaps away from the shore, like a blown engine, fire, running out of gas, towing, or boat salvage require special insurance. The rule of thumb is to have enough gas in the tank for one-third out, one-third back and a little left over just in case. Calling the Coast Guard for gas isn’t an option, and VHF channel 16 is only for real emergencies. Towing is expensive, so expect about $400 per hour or more without insurance. FYI, display your insurance claim phone number in a convenient place on the boat. 4. TRUE Schedule a free 15-point vessel safety check from the Coast Guard auxiliary (CGAUX.ORG) or U.S. Power Squadrons (USPS.ORG) . This identifies the minimum requirements to pass a Coast Guard inspection. 5. FALSE Warranties specific to your boat are not covered by standard policies. When purchasing a new or used boat ask about getting additional coverage and note the expiration dates for future policies. Taking certain classes like “Engine Maintenance” through a local community college may provide the training needed to prevent or fix problems before issuing a claim. 6. TRUE 7. TRUE Classes like the America’s Boating Course or others are available online or through the Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadrons; these have reciprocity in Canada. Also, a driver’s license is not required, but crossing into Canada requires a passport. 8. TRUE 9. FALSE If the policy has lapsed, there may be a waiting period to activate the policy or submit claims. 10. TRUE AND FALSE Top-rated companies, their products and immediate claim services are best; however, the boat owner is responsible to keep the insurance active. Coverage and deductibles that reduce premium costs is an individual’s decision. The question is, “How much of a deductible can I afford in an emergency?” A good agent can help with that. Insurance is a lesson in risk management, from gradients of inconvenience, to major damage or loss of life. It’s important to weigh the pros and cons and find a reputable insurance company(s) to cover the items that meet your needs. Costs, discounts and deductibles, paired with boat owner maintenance and good boating practices create the best situation for “insuring” a peace of mind. ★

Jeanneau NC 895 Jeanneau’s outboard-powered coastal cruiser goes the extra mile.

J

eanneau raised a lot of eyebrows at the 2016 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show with its all-new NC 895 — a 29-foot, outboard-powered pocket cruiser that seems tailor-made for Great Lakes cruisers. For starters, the massive picture windows in the NC 895 make it among the brightest and airiest cruisers in its class, with unobstructed 360-degree views from pretty much anywhere in the salon and cockpit. A pair of independently operated port and starboard sunroofs in the salon, along with the ability to open up the back of the boat, further contribute to this spacious feel. Even below in the owner’s suite and the spacious guest cabin, enormous windows continue to provide plenty of natural light. The master cabin is also equipped with a head, a shower and a sink. Because it’s a Jeanneau, the NC 895 exhibits the benefits of the company’s years of experience producing exceptional coastal cruisers. A full-height sliding door along the starboard side of the wheelhouse makes docking a cinch, even when running solo. The coaming door located on the starboard side allows easy boarding amidships and creates

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

an alternative to boarding via the rear swim platform. The wide, recessed main side deck and tall, sturdy railing allow comfortable and secure passage to the bow, where a large forward sunpad — which can be easily set up as a forwardfacing bench seat — beckons. The cockpit offers a modular seating design that allows owners to configure the NC 895 exactly as they need. The standard forward-facing bench seat across from the transom can either be pushed all the way back to increase cockpit space, or can be pushed forward to allow for open and unimpeded stern access for those who like to fish. An available L-shaped lounge, which continues up the port side, adds a pedestal-mount table and transforms this area into the perfect entertaining zone. The starboard-side transom door provides easy access to the rear swim platform. Equip the NC 895 with an optional generator and AC unit to extend your cruising experience. Powered by a single 300-hp outboard or a pair of 200s, the NC 895 offers low maintenance and outstanding fuel economy, making the most of its twin 53-gallon fuel tanks for comfortable, long-range cruising. ★

Family-focused pontoon is a real crowd pleaser.

I

t’s easy to understand why pontoons continue to grow in popularity. With their ample seating capacity, comfortable accommodations and ability to do so many things well, family-friendly pontoons like Misty Harbor’s Biscayne Bay 2285 CE have a lot to offer Great Lakes boaters. There’s plenty of room for a dozen adults to stretch out on the neatly upholstered furniture, which creates up to three distinct zones in the boat. Twin front loungers surround a pedestal-mount table, creating a private area for quiet conversation while offering a multitude of seating possibilities. A similar wraparound lounge in the stern offers room to stretch out under the cover of a Bimini top, providing a welcome escape from the mid-day sun. Installing a removable filler cushion in front of the rear gate expands this area’s versatility. But the showpiece of this model is the amidships entertainment bar, complete with four stainless steel pedestalmount seats and LED lighting. Not only does this offer a shady lunch spot, but also provides that kitchen island-style lounging area that everyone seems to naturally gravitate to.

“With its comfortable seating and thoughtful amenities, this is the perfect day boat for families who want to enjoy all that the Great Lakes have to offer,” says Al Visintainer, store manager at Centerpointe Boat Services. The Biscayne Bay 2285 CE comes with a long list of standard features, including courtesy lights, stainless steel beverage holders, a removable oval table, the Biscayne Bay series upgraded console with instrument pack, a Kicker KMC1 puck stereo with four mushroom speakers, a chromeaccent steering wheel with tilt, and a Dowco trailerable playpen cover with a rail clip mounting system. Of course, Misty Harbor also offers an enticing option list, allowing owners to personalize the boat with amenities like the available Pro Series ski tow bar and the bow recliners with entertainment center. Maximum power in its standard configuration is 150 ponies, but adding the available Tripletoon Performance Package provides a third center pontoon and a 58-gallon fuel tank — plus the ability to handle engines up to 250 hp. ★

Regal 29 OBX A bowrider made for big water.

B

ig, outboard-powered bowriders that offer generous seating capacity and open deck space, combined with a wave-taming hull and the ability to handle big power, have become especially popular on the Great Lakes, where day boating still respects the power of big water. For those who like their boating flavored with a splash of luxury, Regal has just the answer in its astonishing 29 OBX. Built on the company’s performance-proven FasTrac hull — which forces air under the hull to reduce drag and improve both top speed and fuel economy — the 29 OBX was designed with a focus on enjoying the outdoors in comfort. Twin doublewide stern seats with beautiful upholstery slide away at the push of a button to extend the cockpit floor space by 10 full inches. The seating in the bow is equally comfy and spacious, with a portside lounger, full-width bow seat and forward-facing seat to starboard. Amidship, both the doublewide, powered helm seat and the doublewide companion seat include full-width, flip-up bolsters. The wraparound rear swim platform also speaks to the fact the 29 OBX was made for enjoying the water. Set low to

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

the water for easy access, the platform includes a retractable stainless steel boarding ladder concealed under a neat lid on the port side. When it’s time to change out of wet swimwear, a spacious, enclosed, full-size head compartment — complete with overhead light, dark cherry cabinetry and a clear glass vessel sink — offers privacy and functionality. The standard chemical toilet can be upgraded to a silent flush electric head if desired. While the 29 OBX comes with a long list of standard features, it also offers an enticing range of options, including luxuries like a gas grill, a cockpit refrigerator, a bow thruster, a hardtop and a Power Tower for those who enjoy watersports. “With its shallow water capability, self-draining cockpit and the ease of flushing out saltwater that comes with outboard power, Regal’s 29 OBX is a perfect boat for summers on the Great Lakes and winters down south,” says Basa’s Marine’s Rich Gotlund. With twin Yamaha F200s, the 29 OBX offers a legitimate top speed in excess of 50 mph. Throttle back to just under 30 mph and its 148-gallon fuel capacity provides a range of more than 320 miles. That’s truly impressive for a 29-foot boat. ★

Scarab 195 Open Where sport meets utility.

T

he Scarab nameplate has always been associated with performance and innovation; that heritage lives on in the all-new 195 Open and 195 Open Fish models. Scarab describes the new Open series as the place where “sport meets utility,” and they couldn’t have come up with a more apt description. Taking a tip from the automotive world, where the ultimate sport utility vehicle remains the standard pickup truck, Scarab gave their new 195 Open models the very element that makes a pickup so adaptable: A tailgate. Thanks to some brilliant engineering and space-saving qualities of the boat’s standard Rotax jet power, the entire transom on the Open models can be easily lowered like a pickup’s tailgate, swinging outward until it’s flush with the floor. This immediately creates inviting possibilities: An extended swim platform, a roomy casting deck, or just the perfect spot to enjoy the lake under the summer sun. “Stating that the 195 Open is a versatile new boat is simply an understatement,” says Scarab’s Doyle VanderPol. “The 195 Open and 195 Open Fish have unique features and amenities that will provide years of boating excitement for you, your family and friends.”

Both models feature self-draining cockpits, easy-to-clean upholstery, a cooler and even an optional ballast system for wakeboarding. There’s a standard transom tow point for watersports and an available tower with tow point. A standard console changing room, which can accommodate an available porta-potti, means there’s absolutely no need to return to shore. The 195 Open Fish edition adds four gunnel rod holders and additional rod storage in the cockpit, a baitwell and bow fish box, and a bow casting platform. Available bow and stern fishing seats represent the finishing touch. Standard power for both models is a Rotax 1.5L jet, which churns out 200 hp, while an upgrade to the 250-hp Rotax 1.5L HO is available. The standard engine delivers a top speed in the 37 to 40 mph range, while the HO model pumps that up to 40 to 43 mph. Both come with Rotax’s iNR (intelligent neutral and reverse) control system for easier shifting and enhanced maneuverability at low speeds. Both the 195 Open and 195 Open Fish come with an upgraded single axle trailer with chrome wheels, allowing you to easily tow your fun anywhere. ★

FORMULA 430 SSC The secret formula. BY ALAN WENDT

T

he urge to spill the beans and share this secret Formula with the world almost happened a year ago. Formula’s 430 Super Sport Crossover (SSC) is so unique that designers at the plant in Decatur, Indiana were worried that in a world of social media and smartphone citizen reporters, one leaked photo would allow competitors to knock off a clone before hull No. 1 debuted at the 2016 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. But the boat wasn’t ready. Three generations of the Porter family, which closely holds the reins on Formula, wanted perfection. To introduce a revolutionary new paradigm that would change the offshore boating experience required the proverbial patience of Job. 37

Hold on!

“What do you say we buzz to South Beach and give them a thrill?” asks Vic Spellberg, a long-term confidant and consultant for Formula. Admonished to not even think about posting to Facebook until the boat debuted in Fort Lauderdale two weeks later, I would be the first journalist to test the boat. As Vic eased the Mercury Digital Throttle & Shift forward, he issued a warning to the four of us on-board: “Hold on!” Under cloudless blue skies and a refreshing cold front that swept away Florida’s humidity, the engines spun up. Three information-rich Raymarine gS165 glass display screens recessed in the helm clicked off the numbers: 20, 34, 43, 50 mph, all verified by GPS. In 30 seconds, the stepped hull design got up as if on tip toes, and the GPS climbed to 60 and 61, before settling

in at 63.4 mph — and that was with a full 500 gallons of fuel and an optional $66,000 Seakeeper 5 Gyro Stabilization System. The phrases “faster than a speeding bullet,” “more powerful than a locomotive” and “able to leap a 2-foot chop in a single bound” were competing with the imaginary sounds from another TV oldie: The theme song from “Miami Vice.” Such descriptions only made sense to the generation on-board, not the bikini-clad admirers waving from the beach. But the Formula got the attention of the younger generation back at the marina, with dozens asking us, “What is that?”

Serious SmartZones

Formula has combined an open bow and cabin elements, inspired by their sleek Super Sport lineup and trendy Crossover Bowrider, with today’s smoking hot demand design — a flush, coupe-like cockpit middle console. Transformative and paradigm shifting, this flagship Formula is the epitome of SmartZones that have taken the industry by storm. On a 12-foot beam, the expansive open bow is a world unto itself. Deep, comfortable seating; serious lounging capacity; ubiquitous, LED-illuminated beverage holders, including a flip-down armrest/cup holder in the center bow seat; and not to mention JL Audio blue LED-lighted, chrome finished speakers powered by a Rockford Fosgate sound system are featured in one of the many SmartZones.

While I had plenty of time at the helm, I also took advantage of the ride at speed up front. What surprised me was how quiet the atmosphere was even at 50 mph, allowing for conversation. Unlike a traditional 20-foot bowrider, where one misplaced wave can send you flying, these higher sides and deep seating were convincingly safe. You aren’t likely to move about between the cockpit and bow while underway, however; the split windshield upper door that hinges over is simply too unwieldy for children or persons with limited upper body strength to move when it reaches its zenith. Formula is likely to modify the design on subsequent models. With nearly 40 linear feet of cockpit space flowing uninterrupted on one continuous level, these separate areas foster a variety of activities and boating preferences. A starboard side console helm with triple command seating chiseled for support and crafted for comfort is a nod to Formula’s offshore heritage. Even the footrests mounted in the console electrically actuate up and down to adjust perfectly to each passenger’s stature. While hull No. 1 offered Herculean performance with Quad-400s, the base boat is offered with Mercury 300 Verado outboard engines or the optional 350 Verados. Either engine is perfectly paired with the Mercury Joystick Piloting for Outboard with Active Trim. It takes the guess work out of maintaining perfect trim at any acceleration rate and will bump your

Under a cloak of shrink wrap to hide and protect the Imron Elite Clearcoat finish Formula is famous for, this 43-foot sleek boat was transported to Mercury Marine’s secret testing area in the Florida Panhandle to begin a painstaking marriage of Mercury Racing Quad Verado 400R outboards to a never-before-seen hull and extended swim platform. Technicians literally moved the engines left, right, up and down by millimeters — not inches — before reaching the secret formula that delivers a top speed in excess of 63 mph.

fuel economy as well (although on a performance boat like the 430 SSC, I doubt owners will really quibble over a few gallons here and there.) Behind the helm is SmartZone 3 with a massive U-shaped aft lounge, storage beneath each seat and multi-position backrests, which quickly convert to an aft-facing sun lounge, leading to an impressive swim platform. Water access is via a quick stow ladder that attaches to either side, while other nifty options include twin SUPRAX upright holders that pop into the deck for securing paddleboards. Be sure to have your sales rep demonstrate the three power-adjustable height tables — one in the cockpit and two in the bow — creating dining and entertainment space. These recess flush into the deck and open up space on command. Built-in coolers throughout the boat, a pullout Yeti Tundra 35 cooler, a Gaggenau oval electric grill in the cockpit, an upper deck refreshment galley with a sink and a Cuisinart blender mounted inside a storage door, even a place to secure the flat screen cockpit TV when not in use, show tremendous forethought to the versatile entertainment options up top. Now let’s go below to the cabin. Yes, a real cabin with 6-foot, 6-inch headroom. There’s private relaxation space for a couple and separate sleeping quarters for families with children. The forward berth doubles as a dinette with an electric actuated table that adjusts for sleeping or dining. The aft berth (I’ll resist

calling it a stateroom because of the privacy curtain) is constructed of a Sensus memory foam bed for comfort. Two standard 32-inch TVs, a galley, portside storage with a stainless pullout refrigerator, a microwave, a Keurig coffee maker — yes, all the comforts of home — are built right in. Even the head and shower compartment have designer touches we are accustomed to seeing on overnight boats, but are missing from most day boat and center consoles that are so popular now.

Secret Formula touches

Ever have doors and drawers fly open when you hit a wave? Of course, we all have. Formula uses Posilock latches throughout the boat. Nothing flew open. The real test came at 60 mph with the iPad that allows you to monitor and control virtually every component on-board. Mounted in the cabin through an inductive charging, magnetic secured LaunchPort, it withstood the rigors of speed and waves. Aside from the mobile screen emulation, capture of operational data and digital switching capabilities, it’s the simplest of tasks that amaze. When you are in bed and realize a light up top remains on, simply take the iPad, swipe to the page that controls lights, turn it off and say goodnight. The marriage of touch screens and function throughout the vessel is well orchestrated. There are the numerous well-placed USB charging stations throughout the boat. We all

bring smartphones on-board, and guests will all have a plug to call their own. Another notable feature: An optional built-in stainless steel towing ring in the bow. “A lot of larger yachts 125-150 feet will use this boat as a luxury tender,” observes Vic, “and while the stateside market is aimed at the 38- to 40-foot owner looking to move up, Formula will have two distinct buyers both attracted by the trend toward outboard center consoles.” I always clean my boat myself after a day on the water, so I appreciate the Reverso Outboard Flushing System. Instead of hooking up rabbit ears, you simply plug in dockside water, flip a switch and the system automatically moves engine-to-engine for the 10- to 15-minute per engine flush cycle. All of this gadgetry is housed in the transom utility locker with an electric hookup, a transom shower, a wash down and a cable TV connection. From sunshades forward and aft of the coupe-style cockpit to the full-width motorized glass sunroof, to a new Poseidon pleated blind system, adjusting the right amount of light inside is all at your command. Available in limited production for 2017, the newest flagship for Formula creates a new category of boat sure to please the owner who wants the thrill of speed, as well as the partner who values the pleasures of home, packaged nicely in a technology-rich environment ideally suited for memorable entertainment and relaxation. A

four-hour drive across Michigan brought me to an area on Lake Huron’s coast known as The Thumb. Four continuous days of brisk September winds and rain made the trip a gamble, but thankfully the storm blew over, leaving Saginaw Bay a little overcast and choppy. It was the perfect day to test-drive the SARGO 31, which owner John J. had recently purchased. John knew exactly what he wanted. Experience on commercial vessels and at the helm of his own boats had produced specific requirements for his next purchase. However, none of the offerings from American manufacturers satisfied all of his requirements; he either traded performance expectations for safety, or gave up safety features for comfort. The unpredictable Great Lakes weather was a primary factor in John’s search, and each boat he tested fell short of his target. But since he was in no hurry, John kept looking. With the variety of products available in the U.S., it’s easy to forget about options that lie beyond our borders. After a 5-year search, John discovered the Finnish manufacturer Sarin and their SARGO line, which is marketed as “The All Season Boat”. John researched all available information on SARGO for more than a year. He talked with boat owners around the world and had lengthy discussions with the dealer before finally deciding on the SARGO 31. Since each boat is built to order, there was a 6-month wait before the boat was shipped from Finland. When asked if his boat, the Ava Jeanne, met his expectations, John replied, “It far exceeded them.” And it’s easy to see why. The Sarin family has been building boats since 1967, and their experience and commitment to innovation and quality shows in every detail. The family is more than willing to accommodate customer requests for reasonable feature changes or customizations. John’s boat included several adjustments that were graciously incorporated, creating a much more personalized product. The SARGO 31 has a tug-like, working class appearance: Burly and tough like a Nordic dockworker, but upon a closer look reveals elegance and style. Comparing it to a professional boxer might be best: Good looking and well-dressed, light-footed and quick, but rock solid and able to take a punch when necessary. That’s exactly what John wanted in a boat.

Finnish fit and finish

Stepping aboard, dual sliding entry doors provide easy access to the helm and salon from the wide walkways outside. Handling the boat is facilitated by 360-degree visibility and well-placed controls, which also tip up and aft to make standing at the wheel comfortable. Electronics are easily accessed on the dash or overhead, including the autopilot and standard bow thruster. The helm and salon are bright and airy, with a standard sunroof with optional glass panel inlays overhead. The rear window also opens to allow plenty of air through the space. Ava Jeanne’s blue upholstery is complimented by plenty of teak throughout the cabin. Along with impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail, the Finnish traditions of practicality and inventiveness are reflected in many unexpected options; everything in the boat seems to have more than one purpose. Hinged counter sections allow access to the stove and sink, and create serving space when folded down. A cold storage drawer hides below the helm seats and a built-in cabin heater extends the boating season. The passenger seat spins to join the salon where the dining table can also be folded in half and swiveled aft to create more space. Forward, a short descent leads to a V-berth, which is well lit by twin hull windows and an overhead deck hatch. Another door

to starboard leads to a well-appointed, full-height head. Lifting the port salon seat provides access to a cozy, twin-sized aft berth with storage and a functioning porthole hidden below the salon. Outside, stern seating directly behind the wheelhouse and on either side of the large aft deck doubles as storage, and includes a recess and 12V port for an electric cooler. A 10.8-foot beam makes it easy to picture the space alive with fishing or diving activities, especially with the standard transom door leading to a large swim platform out back. Sturdy stainless rails, cleats and even keel protection ensure safety and security.

Surprisingly single

Under the expansive access panel and perched in a beautifully engineered engine room, I was surprised to find a single Volvo D6 330-hp diesel engine. Twins are available, but John had intentionally ordered the smallest sterndrive option to keep his operation and maintenance costs down. The Volvo D6 is a powerful, reliable engine, but I was prepared to be underwhelmed with the boat’s performance and possibly even maneuverability. I was quickly corrected. Activating the SARGO 31’s bow thruster eliminates any challenges that might be expected while docking a 31-foot boat with a single engine. Performance was another surprise since the single 330-hp engine had no trouble pushing the 11,000-pound boat through the water. And with only one fuel-hungry mouth to feed, range is increased while maintenance costs are reduced. As John pointed the boat out into the bay, I stood in the portside doorway to get an idea of engine noise. With the boat at a comfortable cruising speed of 24 mph, I had no trouble carrying on a conversation or leaning comfortably in the doorway since the boat handled the bay’s choppy water with ease. There was no slap against the hand-laid hull, no spray over the gunnels, and I had no problem hearing John tell me about the lunch he had brought along for us to enjoy back at the dock.

Dreamboat

In the two months since the boat was delivered, John has logged 40 hours at the helm. His family prefers day trips and swimming, and since the summer season around Michigan’s Thumb provides a great deal of attractions for those willing to take a ride, they also enjoy everything from secluded beaches and burger festivals to bird watching and local resorts. However, many of these adventures may require a 15to 30-mile journey, or crossing to the other side of the 25-mile-wide Saginaw Bay. Nothing can ruin a great day on the water faster than unexpected weather changes, and for John, the ability to provide safe passage home was one of the SARGO’s biggest selling points. Having already experienced 3- to 4-foot seas with six people on-board, John says he felt perfectly confident in the SARGO 31’s ability to get everyone safely home. And with a top speed of 37 mph, the boat can get you home quickly. When asked if John had any future plans to go bigger or smaller — as many owners do after a few years of ownership — he said, “Nope, this is it. This is my dream boat.” We should all be so lucky, but maybe luck wasn’t really a factor. John put in the time and effort to find exactly what he wanted, going to great lengths to ensure he was making the right decision. He knew what he was looking for, and it didn’t matter where his search took him before he found it in the SARGO 31. The Ava Jeanne truly is his dreamboat. ★

SCOTT CROFT AT BOATU.S. In 2008 after Hurricane Ike hit Houston, Texas, I was assigned to our BoatU.S. Marine Insurance Program Hurricane Catastrophe, or “Cat” Team. Our Cat Team walked through what was left of marinas wearing our shirts with big blue “BoatU.S.” letters on the back. As we identified and arranged for the salvage of our BoatU.S.-insured vessels, other boaters routinely kept approaching us. These boaters were insured with other insurance companies that had paid for their loss provided under their policy’s hull coverage. In fact, some of these boaters had actual checks in their hands from their insurer, and they showed us their loss payment. And yet, these boaters were approaching the BoatU.S. Cat Team to ask for help salvaging their boat from the bottom of the bay or out from under a pile of boats blown into a marsh. While these boaters had been paid for the loss of their vessel (hull coverage), their insurer did not provide for full salvage coverage up to the policy’s limits (unlike BoatU.S. coverage). In essence, these boat owners were being forced to take money out of their own pocket (or from the claims check in their hands) because their policy did not pay enough to cover the total salvage cost.

Lesson Learned No matter if you live in a hurricane zone or not, you should ensure that your boat’s insurance policy has full coverage and a separate “pot of money” for salvage that’s equal to the policy’s hull coverage. A good insurance policy provides separate salvage coverage up to the insured value of the boat, in addition to any payments to fix the boat or replace equipment.

Marine insurance providers recall memorable claims they hope will teach boat owners a vital lesson: Be prepared.

SCOTT GRASSIE AT PROGRESSIVE You may not think about boat damage from animals often. But bird and other critters can not only wreck the mechanics of a boat, but also the vinyl and canvas interior of your boat. When they get the craving, the damage is not easily repaired; matching colors and textures of any boat interior is a costly venture. One claim we received was rare, as the pontoon boat was well kept and was appropriately covered when the incident happened. After leaving the boat for just a few short weeks, the owner returned to find that the boat cover had been partially removed and the entire interior was riddled with holes and cuts, and signs of pecking and ripping. While the boat owner took all the right precautions, there are a few additional steps you can take to ensure this doesn’t happen to you: Cover your vessel tightly with a fitted cover when not in use; remove any and all sources of food that you may store on the boat; and make sure your boat is not stored or docked next to any trees or power lines where birds frequently feed.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF PROGRESSIVE

Lesson Learned While there are stipulations and exclusions in most insurance policies regarding damage from animals, what boat owners can do to limit those exclusions is simply demonstrate that you’re doing everything possible to protect your boat. A reputable boat insurer will be able to differentiate between a cared for or neglected vessel. In this particular case, having boat insurance with a reputable company like Progressive paid off for the insured, as the damages were covered as a “comprehensive loss.” You never know when a flock of birds is going to choose to dine on your boat, so keep your boat covered with both a good insurance policy and a tight fitting cover when it’s not in use.

MATT ANDERSON AT GLOBAL MARINE INSURANCE Nearly 20 of our insured vessels were laid up for the winter in dry storage when the storage building caught on fire. Two vessels ended up being declared a total loss but most just had heavy smoke and soot damage. One particular claim we received was for a 35-foot Carver that had $49,000 in smoke and soot damage. Boaters may think that when the boating season is over they need not worry about a claim that may occur in the off-season. Unfortunately, fires or collapse from snow at storage facilities happen every year around the country. The owners of the facility were very quick and cooperative with the boat owners to minimize damage and to begin repairs immediately. They handled a very difficult situation professionally and efficiently.

Lesson Learned Generally, the storage agreements that boat owners sign limit the options to sue the storage facility when there is a loss. Without boat insurance, the cost of repair for the fire damage would have been paid out-of-pocket by the boat owner. The owner of the boat who started the fire, if he had boat insurance, would have exhausted his liability limits and the likelihood of collecting would have been minimal. The best option is for a boat owner to carry their own insurance on their boat. Make sure that you have a policy in force year-round with an A-rated insurance carrier that is experienced in providing marine coverage. To have primary insurance on a standalone boat or yacht policy provides much broader coverage than having the watercraft listed on your homeowners policy.

Woods and water. Fossils and fishing. Sinkholes and stars. Alpena, Michigan’s natural attributes initially shaped its history as a Lake Huron fishing port and lumbering center. After the forests were depleted, limestone for cement production helped the city continue to thrive. Located on Thunder Bay, a natural harbor and port of refuge, the area’s maritime history is accessible at several lighthouses and underwater at the country’s only freshwater marine sanctuary.

the largest city in the northeast corner of Michigan’s Mitten, Alpena’s appeal is rooted in what it isn’t, according to Mary Beth Stutzman, president and CEO of the Alpena Convention and Visitors Bureau. “This is not the place for massive shopping sprees or jumping out of a plane,” she says with a laugh. “Our big thing is just getting outdoors. We’re for people who are looking for the relaxed adventure: Stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, hiking, bicycling, fat tire biking in the winter, cross-country skiing and fishing — including ice fishing. Sometimes I think we overcomplicate life. Sometimes a simple walk in the woods with your kids is enough; it’s creating a memory you won’t forget.”

A river runs through it

Alpena’s first industry was fishing, and its earliest settlement was on the Thunder Bay River, which cuts through the city on its way to Lake Huron. It’s not unusual to see anglers of all ages perched on piers, bridges, the riverbank and the shores of inland lakes and ponds. The summer’s major event, the Michigan Brown Trout Festival, now includes walleye and bass tournaments in addition to the original namesake contest. The river winds through the Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary, a 500-acre retreat in the middle of the city. It’s home to the 17-acre Island Park, accessible by pedestrian bridge from Duck Park. Easy foot trails cross meadows, woods and marshlands. Great blue herons, swans, sunning turtles and other small wildlife sightings are common. Kayakers can launch from Duck Park for a quiet paddle through the sanctuary. It’s hard to picture the peaceful waterway during the lumbering era when, at its peak in 1889, 220 million board feet of timber rushed through the mouth of the Thunder Bay River.

The “traveling ladders” reach the upper wooden shelves that are lined with antique medicine bottles, sundry boxes and tins. Area artists display and sell their creations at Art in the Loft and Thunder Bay Arts Council & Gallery, and the Local Basket Case is jam-packed with quality wearables and Alpena souvenirs. The Besser Company is still headquartered in the city, and the museum also houses wildlife specimens, a planetarium and a surprisingly deep collection of art. A handful of historic buildings form a village on the museum grounds. A roadside attraction worthy of a jaunt south along US-23 to Ossineke is Dinosaur Gardens, which grew from the curiosity and talent of Paul Domke who was fascinated by the prehistoric creatures. After extensive research, he crafted cement interpretations of about 30 massive animals that have been amazing and amusing vacationers for more than 80 years. North of the city at the Lafarge World Headquarters and cement plant, viewing areas allow the public to watch the action at the world’s largest limestone quarry. Giant haulers loaded with tons of rock look like toy trucks scooting through a field of gray gravel. At the harbor view area, it’s possible to see freighters pull alongside cement storage silos for loading. One of the area’s most unique attractions is Thunder Bay Resort, located just 25 minutes west of Alpena in Hillman. USA Today named the winter version of the resort’s four-hour “Elk Viewing, Sleigh/Carriage Ride, Gourmet Dinner and Wine Tasting” event as one of the “10 Best” sleigh rides in North America. Pulled by massive teams of Belgian draft horses through the resort’s 160-acre wooded preserve, one can observe elk in their natural habitat and take in the pristine scenery. Enjoy a five-course gourmet dinner and wine tasting at the Elk Antler Cabin, decorated with antiques, trophy mounts and a massive stone fireplace. Fossil hunting at Rockport State Park

Thunder Bay Resort also offers a challenging championship golf course — carved around mature forests and numerous ponds — as well as golf packages with neighboring courses.

Sinkhole

Stargazing and sinkhole hunting

Stargazing is an otherworldly experience at Alpena’s three designated Dark Sky Preserves. All of the preserves are on the shores of Lake Huron where there’s little to no artificial light to interfere with a sky show that may, if you’re lucky, include the Aurora Borealis. Two of the parks are undeveloped and stellar destinations for both night and daytime viewing: Thompson’s Harbor State Park, with more than 7 miles of shoreline, and the isolated stretch of sandy beach at Negwegon State Park, accessible via a rugged drive that sometimes requires a four-wheel drive vehicle. Rockport Recreation Area might be Alpena’s most unusual Dark Sky Park. Located on the site of an old limestone quarry, it features a deepwater protected harbor with a boat launch and a former commercial shipping dock that’s popular as a fishing pier. According to Stutzman, rock hounds love it because “you can trip over the fossils” sprawled across Rockport’s eerie, gravely landscape. It’s also one of the few public parklands where it’s legal to carry away the ancient rock. Rockport’s 4,200-plus acres are also the site of 13 sinkholes — areas of sunken earth caused by the crumbling of layers of below-surface soluble rock, including gypsum, shale and limestone. With more than 200 sinkholes, the Alpena

region has one of the world’s highest concentrations of the topographical formations. Prime examples open to the public are the Bruski Sink, measuring 2.5 acres and reaching a depth of 115 feet, and neighboring Stevens Twins Sinks, with earth cracks indicating that the two 85-foot sinkholes are continuing their slow collapse.

Shipwreck Alley

There’s a reason — hundreds of them, really — that the waters off Alpena’s shoreline are known as “Shipwreck Alley.” More than 200 vessels rest on the floor of Lake Huron at depths of up to 200 feet due to unfortunate encounters with violent storms, thick fog, rocky shoals and other ships. Scuba divers have located nearly half of the known wrecks in the 4,300 square miles protected by Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, where the cold freshwater has preserved an underwater museum of Great Lakes commercial shipping and passenger ships from the 1840s to the 1960s. Wooden, tall-masted schooners, steel hulled freighters, barges and steamers attract recreational divers of all abilities, according to Jim Wood, a certified diver who has logged dives in Lakes Michigan and Superior, in addition to the shipwrecks of Thunder Bay Sanctuary. “The beautiful thing about the preserve is the wide variety of interesting dives,” Wood says. “There are lots of wrecks suitable for almost any diver’s skill level, as well as interesting geological features.” But you don’t need a tank to observe the maritime

treasures. The water is so clear that kayakers and snorkelers can view wrecks 11 to 20 feet below the surface. Local dive shops that offer charters and scuba equipment service and rentals also rent snorkeling gear. Alpena Shipwreck Tours offers two-hour, glassbottomed boat cruises over a half-dozen wrecks from late May to early October. The 65-foot Lady Michigan departs from the Maritime Heritage Trail, which follows the Thunder Bay River under the Second Street drawbridge to Lake Huron. The interpretive Heritage Trail is adjacent to the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, the Marine Sanctuary’s visitor facility. Centerpiece of the Maritime Heritage Center is the full-size replica of a wooden schooner that simulates the perils of sailing the Great Lakes during a storm. Model ships, artwork, shipwreck artifacts, hands-on activities and a film theater round out the “Exploring the Shipwreck Century” exhibit of the free, year-round interpretive facility. Tucked among the museum shop’s shirts, caps, nautical toys and books, a refrigerator chills locally made Shipwreck Soda; the bottle labels feature photos and stats for E.B. Allen Orange, F.T. Barney Grape and The Grecian Cream sodas.

Beacons beckon

Lighthouse lovers have seven distinctive sentinels to explore along the Lake Huron coast near Alpena, including “Little Red,” right in the city at the mouth of the Thunder Bay River. The 1914 steel skeletal structure replaced wooden beacons that dated back to the late 1800s. Described as “long on duty, short on beauty,”

the sturdy red light has been compared to Sputnik, the Russian space satellite, and is a unique style in the U.S. The Presque Isle lights north of Alpena are a more traditional style, and you can climb the towers for sweeping views. The 30-foot tall stone and brick Old Presque Isle Lighthouse was built on the peninsula in 1840 and is one of the oldest on the Great Lakes that welcomes visitors. Rumors persist that the former museum caretaker, George Parris, haunts it and occasionally lights the long-dark lamp. In 1871, the New Presque Isle Lighthouse (a mile to the north) replaced the decommissioned light. At 113 feet, it’s the tallest light on the Great Lakes that visitors can climb (open to those 42-inches and taller). At the base of the graceful, white brick tower, two keepers’ houses serve as museums, and the compound is surrounded by parkland with a stony beach.

A warm and friendly port

In an unusual public-private arrangement, Alpena’s Municipal Marina is operated by Thunder Bay Shores Marina, which is co-owned by Michael Connolly and Richard McTaggart. Fifty of the 140 slips are seasonal, and availability is usually not an issue. The marina can accommodate boats up to 60 feet, however, “we have had them up to 111 feet,” says Connolly. “We can handle pretty much anything on the Great Lakes.” Connolly ticks off their services including fuel, dockhands, repair mechanics on-site, a 35-ton travel lift, sewage pump-out, marine store, showers, long-term parking, shrinkwrapping, storage and rental cars delivered to the marina. facility is just a couple of blocks from downtown restaurants, shops, pubs and movie theaters. Pricing is competitive, says Connolly. “We have probably the lowest rates on the Great Lakes, and we’ll work on multiple day, weekly rates and monthly rates. We’re like Priceline,” he chuckles. “Just call.” Thunder Bay is a federal harbor of refuge and the marina keeps a long season, opening as soon as the ice melts — usually in April — and closing in November. Diana Easthope, an Alpena area native who now lives in southeast Michigan, returns often to visit family — sometimes cruising Lake Huron to Thunder Bay with her husband, Mike. She knows Alpena as a sanctuary for sailors and a great place to catch summertime concerts in the park, enjoy a burger at Burgies, hear local bands at The Black Sheep Pub and connect with a caring community. “Alpena is a best kept secret,” Easthope says. “It’s a good little place.” ★

Baileys Harbor, WI Indoor and outdoor spaces merge at this luxurious lakeside home.

B

oaters looking for a property that can seamlessly morph from a relaxing nature retreat into an entertainment hub will have a hard time finding a better option than 7093 All Creatures Lane. Located on a near 3-acre lot in Door County’s quaint town of Baileys Harbor, this property boasts 229 feet of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline, a salmon and trout-filled backyard stream, and a path winding through the surrounding woods. The beauty of the environment isn’t lost once you step indoors, either: Each of the four bedrooms and the living areas in this house feature a lake view, while the great room revolves around floor-to-ceiling windows with two sets of French patio doors. The gathering room and barrel-vaulted loft are among the many perfect quiet spots to sneak off with a good book. “The deck upstairs is great for viewing the stars at night,” adds homeowner Carol Redfield. “You can see the Milky Way all the time. Twice we’ve seen the space station fly over. You can see the harvest moon rise off the lake, which is fantastic.” Although it’s hard not to get lost in its big views of Lake Michigan, the detailing and craftsmanship of this Nantucket-style abode are a treasure in its own right.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

“The attention to detail of our designer and architect is incredible,” says Redfield. To name a few: Scraped white oak hardwood floors with a chocolate stain throughout the house, a professional chef–designed kitchen and a pastel color palette, creating a comfortable ambiance. Subtle design elements — such as a tongue and groove beadboard kitchen ceiling, a fireplace with hand-shaped clay brick and customdesigned mahogany handrails — give this home extra charm. Like the Redfields, the next homeowners may have a hard time keeping the space to themselves. With some furniture reshuffling, the house has hosted two chamber music concerts and a 13-foot Christmas tree. Guests will have plenty of rooms to choose from, including a kid’s boat room complete with original Coast Guard navigational maps. Nearby wilderness areas in Baileys Harbor, such as the Ridges Sanctuary or the historic Cana Island Lighthouse, provide countless opportunities for exploration. Numerous nearby harbors also make this property ideal for adventurous boaters. “It’s relaxing. It’s beautiful,” says Redfield. “It’s been a great home.” ★

The Pioneer 222 VenTure

From the very first glance, the Sun Odyssey 349 captivates with her pure lines, generous interior volume and inviting cockpit. Designed by Marc Lombard and true to the values of the Sun Odyssey line, the 349 is the perfect combination of performance, comfort and safety at sea. Whether in the cockpit or at the helm, at anchorage or at sea, you will enjoy taking full advantage of this seaworthy, stable and easy-to-handle sailboat.

From water sports to hardcore fishing the Venture 222 is “the ultimate family fun and fishing boat!” With twin 14 gallon baitwells and 96 gallons of fuel this boat is equally at home 40 miles offshore as it is on a freshwater lake. The walk through windshield gives superior protection from wind, rain and weather. Lounge seating, enclosed head and cockpit table gives you features and room to entertain a boat load of friends.

CLASSIC CRAFTS by Kate Bush

Take Two

ADD YOUR BOAT

72

Take Two is a 1956 25-foot Chris-Craft Express Cruiser. I had previously owned a very similar boat in 1981: A 1954 24-foot Chris-Craft Express, which I had purchased after graduating college. I ending up parting with the boat over a girl, but the funny thing is that I ended up with neither and I always regretted selling that boat. In 2005, I had already restored and still owned a 1936 19-foot Chris-Craft runabout, but I longed for the cruiser that I had sold years ago. I located the old boat in Barrie, Ontario, and made the drive from my Grand Rapids, Michigan home only to find the boat in such disrepair that I reluctantly decided to pass on it. I found Take Two in Harbor Springs, Michigan. The boat was complete with its original engine and was sitting on a homemade trailer stored behind the owner’s house. The deal was made and the boat was mine. Over the course of 10 years, I completely restored the boat myself, starting with a new bottom, chrome, upholstery, finish, custom trailer and lots of woodwork. Many summers went by during the restoration with my wife lamenting, “It’s not going to be done this summer either?” In the summer of 2015, Take Two finally made its debut at the Les Cheneaux Antique and Classic Boat Show in Hessel, Michigan. My efforts and hours of labor were rewarded with a “First in Class” and “Best Amateur Restoration.” The boat is easily trailered and is enjoyed by the Frye family around the many lakes and rivers of the great state of Michigan. The name Take Two is derived from my profession as a voice talent/producer/engineer for radio and television. Also, this was my second attempt at owning a Chris-Craft Express — because no one gets it right on the first take. Email kbush@lakelandboating.com if you have a Classic Craft with a good story to share! —Tom Frye, Grand Rapids, MI
