You can drop anchor in the Chicago Playpen and get all the socialization any extrovert can handle. Or cruise to Ontario's Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron for some of the most remote, picturesque cruising grounds gifted by Mother Nature (p. 50). Discover secluded anchorages just off the North Channel, take a hike through lush trails that weave past waterfalls and stop at Wikwemikong for the First Nations Cultural Fest. The island is a nature-lover's paradise. A nice middle-ground between the excitement of the Playpen and tranquillity of Manitoulin Island is Wisconsin's Door County (p. 22). In our final "Waypoint" in a three-part series, contributor Myles Dannhausen completes the journey around the peninsula, from Ephraim down to Little Sturgeon Bay. This sliver of land in northern Wisconsin has a good mix of quiet landscapes and a bounty of on-land attractions, restaurants and events. Speaking of events, the Tall Ships Challenge sails into the Great Lakes this summer, featuring stately, traditional sailing rigs that will be making stops in 11 U.S. and Canadian port cities, including Bay City, Michigan; Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Toronto, Ontario (p. 46). As contributor Kim Racette writes, each tall ship “captures the imagination and takes those attending the festivals to another realm, one full of possibilities.” You all know Lakeland Boating loves canine crewmembers (flip to p. 6 to see what we mean). We’re the Janiciks, we boat out of Presque Isle State Park Marina on lovely Lake Erie, and we want you to meet the most popular member of our family, Louie. He is a 14-year-old labradoodle who has been boating with us since he was two months old. Now in his senior years, you can see that he likes to keep one paw always on deck for stability. He loves boating but, as he is always exploring the world through his mouth, he has chewed up both of his life jackets. His days of jumping off the swim platform are behind him now, so we take him to one of the dog-friendly beaches and walk him through the water while on-leash, followed by a 23hour nap. All we have to say is, “Do you want to go to the lake?” and he’s off to the car, riding shotgun. —Rebecca and Kevin Janicik

Skye and Star When we lost our constant canine companion in January, we needed two puppies to fill his paws. “Star” (white face) and “Skye,” our border collies, were only 12 weeks old when they took their first boat ride. Now at 19 weeks, they are real boat pups with all paws on deck and all noses into the wind! Even in “ruff” water, they are always having fun! Boyne Thunder Roars into Northern Michigan July 12-13 Mark your calendars for July 12-13 for the 16th annual Boyne Thunder Poker Run in Boyne City, Michigan. The poker run showcases 120 high-performance boats from across the country, roaring through the waters of Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan on a 130-mile excursion in search of the best poker hand. Card stops include Northport, Elk Rapids, Harbor Springs and Bay Harbor, with a lunch stop in downtown Charlevoix. The day concludes with a dinner and an
auction at Veterans Park, where participants play their cards to see who has the best hand. Brunswick Acquires Freedom Boat Club Boat clubs are all the rage, and Brunswick has decided they want a slice of the market. The company announced in May that it acquired Freedom Boat Club (FBC), the largest boat club operator in the nation. Founded in 1989, FBC and its franchisees service more than 20,000 members, with a fleet of nearly 2,200 boats at approximately 170 company-owned or franchised locations across 30 states, Canada and Europe. “FBC strengthens our ability to benefit from the growth in the broader sharing economy and exposes a wider range of consumers to the boating lifestyle,” says Brunswick Chief Executive Officer David M. Niagara Falls Tour Boat Going Electric
Visitors to Niagara Falls this year will get to see the sights while being environmentally friendly. The Maid of the Mist tour company is switching to all-electric and zeroemission vessels by September. The two new catamarans will be the first all-electric passenger boats in the country. “The Maid of the Mist has offered tours of the worldfamous Niagara Falls waterfalls and of the Niagara River Gorge for more than a century, and are a signature tourism attraction of Western New York,” says New York Gov. Cuomo. “The new zero-emission boats will continue that proud tradition while continuing our efforts to make New York State a premier environmentally friendly tourism destination.” The boats are currently being constructed by Burger Boat Co. in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Michigan offers more than 8 million acres of publicly accessible lands, 12,000 miles of trails, 3,288 miles of Great Lakes shoreline and more, all of which generate $26.6 billion a year in consumer spending. This huge economic impact has led the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to create the new Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry. “Every year, millions of Michiganders spend their summers swimming and kayaking in our Great Lakes, hiking and biking on our trails, and climbing the dunes on Lake Michigan,” says Gov. Whitmer. “And it’s not just Michiganders, people come here from all over the world because of the outdoor experiences our state has to offer.” The new Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry will work to: Expand the outdoor recreation economy in the state; bring

Hugelmeyer was previously president of the RV Industry Association (RVIA); prior to RVIA, he was president and CEO of the Outdoor Industry Association for 14 years. “Frank brings extensive experience and expertise in outdoor recreation and association management to NMMA, making him the ideal growth-minded leader for the recreational boating industry,” says Ben Speciale, NMMA chairman and president of Yamaha’s U.S. Marine Business Unit. The Melges 24 North American Championship will sail into Traverse City, Michigan, on August 15-18. The Grand Traverse Yacht Club (GTYC) will host the event, welcoming competitors from around the world. The races, three or four per day, are on a course about four miles along the West Grand Traverse Bay. The sailboats, designed for racing by Melges Performance Sailboats in Wisconsin, have been in production since 1994. Riders Wanted for Lake Huron Water Warriors Event
Organizers for the Water Warriors event — which will take place July 29 to August 2 — are hoping for at least 12 more participants to travel the length of Lake Huron and the St. Clair River to raise money for Special Olympics Michigan. The goal is to reach $150,000, and the more riders, the easier reaching that goal becomes. The full event price is $1,500, but you can also participate in day one for $500 or travel from one stop to another for $100. Riders raise awareness for Special Olympics Michigan at every stop along the five-day journey. The 450-mile route starts in Mackinaw City and ends in Algonac. Personal watercraft are required and riders must be 18 years or older. Volunteers to support the riders and land crew are also needed. THE STAIN Dirt, grime, gunk, muck. Fish blood, food, drinks. These are your surface stains. THE SCIENCE Most surface dirt will wash right off with boat soap and water. However, some gets ground in, especially on non-skid surfaces. That’s where surfactants come in. Surfactant molecules fully surround the dirt molecules and lift them from the surface that you’re cleaning. This allows them to be washed away with water. Chelating Agents are supercharged surfactants for specialized cleaning. THE SOLUTION Star brite Boat Wash will definitely remove most surface dirt. For tough grime and gunk, use a cleaner/ degreaser, such as Star brite Xtreme Clean or choose a surfactant based on the surface: Non-Skid Deck Cleaner for nonskid, Vinyl Cleaner for vinyl, etc…
THE STAIN Tree leaves, hull stains, rust stains, waterline stains, hard water stains, orange stains. THE SCIENCE Tannins are naturally produced in the decomposition of plant-based matter, and their signature orange-hued stains are dying your hull and fiberglass. Rust stains occur on the fiberglass around metal, where water leaches color from underneath the metal and deposits it on the surface. Removing these stains requires a chemical reaction with an acid. THE SOLUTION Star brite Instant Hull Cleaner contains a modified oxalic acid that safely neutralizes tannins and rust. There’s much more science behind it but trust us on this one, simply spray or wipe on and watch the stain disappear.
THE STAIN Black, brown, green, and even pink mold and mildew stains. THE SCIENCE Similar to grass stains, these stains are caused by organic material, and need something stronger than a surfactant alone to remove them. The oxygen in a bleaching agent attacks and breaks up these types of stains, and removes any discoloration. THE SOLUTION While most people believe that regular chlorine bleach is the answer, it also causes a lot of problems, such as breaking down fabrics and stitching and destroying gelcoats. Instead use Star brite Mildew Stain Remover—a buffered bleach formula— that attacks the stain without harming the surface. LEARN MORE
THE STAIN Black shoe marks, rub rail and bumper scuffs, marks left from dragging hoses and equipment. THE SCIENCE Scuff marks—or “transfer stains”—happen when material is transferred onto a surface and is mechanically bonded. Chemicals are rarely strong enough to remove these marks, since many times the material that has transferred is chemical-resistant (think of a rubber shoe). These abrasive marks require the same to remove them: abrasion. THE SOLUTION Star brite Ultimate Magic Sponge uses nano-sized scrubbers to grab hold and erase most marks easily. served beach-style on the south end of the village. And there’s always room for ice cream from the timeless Wilson’s Ice Cream parlor. No place means as much to as many as Peninsula State Park, the southern bookend of Ephraim and the starting point for family vacation traditions since it was founded as the second state park in Wisconsin in 1909. Families flock for the biking and hiking trails, golfers for the breathtaking views from the 18-hole course near the Ephraim entrance, and fans of the stage delve deep into the woods for performances at the renowned Northern Sky Theater. The park is also a favorite for mariners who come to see the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse that still stands watch after 151 years and, of course, Nicolet Bay beach. It’s not uncommon to see dozens of boats tied up here for fun in the sun at the county’s busiest beach. Those in the know love to take an “island adventure” with a stop at Horseshoe Island, where a hike around the trail will give a quiet retreat from the beach. From here you can venture further afield to Chambers Island, the second largest of Door County’s 27 islands (only Washington is larger) at 3,200 acres. Located about five miles from Fish Creek, the island is home to no permanent residents, but there are several vacation homes on the island owned by folks who get around on ATVs. There’s even an island within the island here, with a small dot of land in the center of the inland Mackaysee Lake. When the wind is blowing, this is also one of the favorite spots for kitesurfing in Door County. A good wind might send a dozen kites into the air as the adventurous launch themselves over the spit on the south end of the island.

Wilson’s Ice Cream
Ephraim No Door County community celebrates its history as much as Ephraim. This tiny hamlet founded by Norwegian Andrews Iverson in 1853 was Wisconsin’s last dry community until residents finally voted to allow the sale of beer and wine in 2016. But don’t worry, the charm of this village cloaked almost entirely in white paint remains. From the shore, the church steeples stand watch over the shallow harbor that’s popular for kayakers, paddleboarders and kite-boarders. Villages don’t get much more picturesque than Ephraim, whether it’s the sunset that ends with a round of applause from appreciators every night, the sailboats moored in the harbor, or the unmistakable Eagle Bluff across the water. But few places are more popular photo stops than the Hardy Gallery on Anderson Dock. This old graffiti-covered fishing hut on the end of the pier is a go-to for the just-married, the first date or the family photo op. Cozy restaurants sit snug in amid historic buildings. The female-powered Trixie’s wine bar offers an inspired wine list, an intriguing menu of small plates and an aesthetic made for Instagram. Around the corner, Randy Isley roasts coffee to perfection at Isley Coffee Roasters. Czarnuszka Soup Bar offers tasty, wallet-friendly soup and sandwiches when you have just a moment for lunch, and Good Eggs is a go-to stop for fat breakfast burritos

Peninsula State Park and Horseshoe Island
Fish Creek Heading back landward, the picturesque village of Fish Creek unfolds before you, the towering bluff above wrapping its protective grasp around the most popular destination on the peninsula. This was the first of Door County’s villages to claim tourism as its hallmark at the turn of the last century, and its streets still draw crowds today. Dock your boat at one of the county’s largest marinas, Alibi Marina. Neighboring Peninsula State Park, the marina offers 123 seasonal berths and 25 transient slips for boats up to 150 feet. Since it’s two blocks from downtown Fish Creek, Alibi Marina is a great launch pad for exploring the eclectic boutiques, jewelers, artists and gift shops, many housed in historic buildings not much different than the cottages that welcomed the first tourists here. For those looking for a new boat this season, Spring Brook Marina and Yacht Sales has an office on Main Street. You’ll also find great dining, whether it’s cherry-stuffed French toast at the White Gull Inn (voted the best breakfast in America by Good Morning America) or a kickin’ egg sandwich at Blue Horse Bistro across from the beach. For

lunch, you can’t beat tacos in the sun at Taco Cerveza or a seat on the balcony of The Cookery with a locally sourced plate. When the sun sets, head to Bayside Tavern or Alexander’s for the local scoop and great food, or take the kids for pizza at the original Wild Tomato location and custard at the playground at Not Licked Yet. Special occasion? At the Whistling Swan you’ll enjoy a delectable menu, fabulous wine list and a cozy dining room on the first floor of a bed and breakfast that dates back to the village’s earliest host, Dr. Herman Welcker. Egg Harbor The journey south from Fish Creek features a peek into summer life for those living on two of Door County’s most prestigious roads. Outside Fish Creek is Cottage Row, a 1.5-mile stretch of shoreline, home to some of the town’s most well-rooted families and once the location of legendary Packers Coach Curly Lambeau’s summer cottage. From the water, you get a glimpse of the majesty of many of these lakefront estates. In 2010, the village unveiled a beautiful, $7 million full-service marina where one can tie up to explore this suddenly popular dining and drinking destination. Just a few short years ago, Egg Harbor was an afterthought for many visitors, but a surge of new establishments like One Barrel Brewing Co., Hatch Distilling Co. and Fireside Restaurant has put it back on the map. Parador has been delighting diners with Spanish tapas-inspired menu for years, and Main Street Market is a perfect spot to grab sandwiches for the boat or beach, or to shop the county’s widest wine and craft beer selection. Make time to check out the stunning Donald and Carol Kress Pavilion, home to the public library on the first floor and a stunning event space on the second floor with a view of the orchards, bluffs and harbor. The pavilion opened in 2018 and immediately became northern Door County’s favorite community space. A short sail from the marina is the recently expanded public beach, a favorite for boaters with families to tie up, wade in, play in the sand or rent paddleboards. For a taste of the Door County of yesteryear swing down to The Alpine Resort, where the Bertschinger family has hosted vacationers since 1922. If you’ve got a spare $15 million, you can purchase this lodge, golf course and restaurant, and claim your own personal version of a place that feels straight out of the movie “Dirty Dancing.” Back to Sturgeon Bay From here, you’re just a few minutes from the county seat, Sturgeon Bay, population 8,900 and the shipbuilding capital of the Great Lakes. In World War II, the population of the city doubled as workers descended on Sturgeon Bay to churn out as many as five naval vessels per day. Today the output is nothing like its heyday, but skilled tradesmen continue to build and repair the massive 1,000-foot lakers that move cargo around the Great Lakes. Not far from the city, you’ll find the hidden getaway of Little Sturgeon Bay. This protected harbor is home to Wave Pointe Marina and Resort, with a 124-slip, full-service marina, family friendly lodge, restaurant and outdoor tiki bar to lounge away a sun-drenched summer evening. And just up the shore is Potawatomi State Park, originally considered a National Park and now home to camping, fishing, hiking and Potawatomi Tower, a 75-foot observation tower offering expansive views of Sturgeon Bay and Sawyer Harbor. As of this writing, that tower is closed for safety reasons, but a dedicated group is working to repair it and save it for future generations. ★

D
espite the proliferation of commercial towing companies, there will be times when a fellow mariner can arrive on-scene and offer assistance faster than a professional first responder. Let’s take a look at what you need to know in order to protect both yourself and those you are trying to help. The basics of towing While providing a non-emergency tow (i.e. boats and occupants are not in any immediate danger) may be the most common form of assistance, that doesn’t mean it’s commonly done correctly. Towing is not simply a matter of tossing your ratty dock line and goosing the throttle. Before offering a tow, there are things you, as the captain, will be required to know — both from a practical and legal responsibility standpoint. No set of guidelines will be able to cover every variable you’ll encounter, however, the following tips should be useful in most any towing situation.

Twelve tips for towing 1. Take a moment to assess the situation when arriving at the disabled vessel. Everyone wants to lend a hand whenever possible, but you have the responsibility of doing so without placing yourself in danger or elevating the situation of the other vessel. For example, a boat that’s aground could have sustained significant damage, causing it to sink once towed into deeper water. 2. When towing, have the disabled boat pass the tow line over to the tow boat. This lets the towing vessel easily cast off once the tow is completed. A nylon anchor rode is ideal for this as it’s typically easily available, is long (allowing for length adjustments) and provides good shock-absorbing qualities due to the nylon’s stretchiness. 3. If the towing vessel has an oncenterline towing fixture (like a pylon for skiing) it might make a good place to attach a tow line, assuming it’s robust enough. Otherwise, you’ll want to make a towing bridle. A simple bridle can be made by running a stout line between your two stern cleats. Attach the towing line to it using a bowline, so that the loop can slide along your bridle. Keep the bridle loose enough to provide room for the tow line to slide freely, but not too loose that it can come in contact with your propeller.

4. Establish communications before starting the tow and keep in contact throughout the tow. Using your VHF on a “working” or non-emergency channel will likely be the most common means of communication; however, cell phones or even hand signals will work. For the latter, make sure everyone understands the basic hand signals to be used (stop, slow down, speed up, release the tow, etc.). 5. Once the tow line is attached to both vessels, take the slack out of the tow line slowly until the full load is achieved, at which point you can throttle up to a suitable towing speed. 6. Always agree on where the disabled vessel will be towed prior to heading out. It’s also a good idea to have a contingency plan in case something goes wrong (deteriorating weather, low fuel, etc.). 7. Maintain a “tow watch” during the tow to make sure that the towed vessel is doing OK and to ensure the tow line doesn’t foul your propeller. 8. If towing in open water, increase the length of the tow line. This not only puts some safety distance between the two vessels but also increases the shock absorbing qualities of your tow rope. If towing in larger waves, adjust the tow line so that both boats ride in sync with each other at the wave crests, troughs, etc. Boats that are out of sync while towing can experience significant shock-loading, causing boat damage (like ripped out cleats) and injury to those onboard. 9. Shorten up tow lines in calm waters or when maneuvering in close quarters, such as when approaching a boat ramp or dock. Always remember that just because the tow boat stops that doesn’t mean the towed boat will quickly do the same. 10. Provide chafe protection for the tow line anywhere it touches the tow or towed boat. An old fire hose makes great chafe gear, but even something as simple as a dish towel, old piece of canvas or a T-shirt will work in a pinch. On the opposite side of the equation, always keep a sharp knife handy should you need to sever the towline in the event of an emergency. 11. Make the tow as smooth as possible for the towed vessel. Try different speeds to find the best speed for both the boat being towed and the conditions. 12. Never hesitate to decline to offer a tow if circumstances make it unsafe: Bad weather, rough seas, your boat is too small, etc. The bottom line is that while you are obliged to provide as much help as possible in the event of an emergency, you also don’t want to attempt something that is beyond your capabilities — creating a situation that could cause civil liability for you. If the crew is stranded but not in imminent danger, the most prudent course of action may be to simply stand by and provide moral support until a professional tow company arrives to assist. ★

A Glimpse Into the Future
I
’ll never forget the sheer terror of that sweltering long-ago summer day on Tennessee’s Fort Loudon reservoir. I had been testing a large, new Sea Ray for this magazine, and as we approached the marina, I turned the controls over to my companion from the factory. After all, his boat, not mine — and my own boat was a modest 16-footer tied up to a seawall back in Algoma, Wisconsin. Oh no, he told me. The Sea Ray had this fancy new joystick technology and he wanted to give me the opportunity to try docking with it. Suddenly, that family cruiser felt like an aircraft carrier. It did not, however, dock like an aircraft carrier. In fact, maneuvering the vessel into its snug berth felt more akin to playing a video game. Joystick piloting was a game-changer for me personally, and it has proven to be revolutionary for boating in general. As with all leaps forward in technology, however, it did leave all of us wondering what would come next. As it turns out, the answer to that question was still at the dock.

The next step: A set of eyes Most of the stress and anxiety associated with boating involves departing or returning to the dock. Whether we like to admit it or not, that’s true for every boater at one time or another. “Even in your own waters, conditions can change a lot,” says Dan Balogh, director of electrical, electronics and software engineering for Mercury Marine. “It’s so frustrating, isn’t it? You have a plan and then it gets murky.” Mercury introduced the advanced Zeus joystick docking system for pod drives in 2007. Axius, the first joystick system for sterndrive engines, followed in 2008, and the Oshkosh, Wisconsin-based company brought its Joystick Piloting for Outboards (JPO) to market in 2013. After all that, what would the logical next step look like? “We’ve added a set of eyes,” Balogh says, “a system that can see what’s happening around you.” He’s talking about Raymarine DockSense, an assisteddocking system that uses advanced machine vision technology to sense and identify potential obstacles in a boat’s path. The system provides feedback to Mercury’s advanced piloting assist system, which allows the boat’s JPO to autonomously respond and ensure a smooth docking process. The roots of these technological innovations lie in the latest aerospace control systems and autonomous-car artificial intelligence. Exciting stuff, but what does that all mean? “There are a series of five binocular cameras, each with two lenses stuck together,” Balogh explains. “They’re like your eyes, so they have depth perception. These cameras can look to see where things are and how far away they are, from all angles and viewpoints, and then they can tell the computer what’s what.

“We realized we could use this with our joystick system, so Raymarine really was a natural fit,” he adds. With both systems working together, the captain has access to a dynamic map updated with information from the cameras. The computer knows where the edges of the boat are so it can let the captain know if they’re about to bump into something. This winter, Mercury and Raymarine introduced the new technology aboard a 33-foot Boston Whaler Outrage rigged with twin Mercury Verado engines and equipped with Mercury’s JPO and advanced piloting assist system. In late January, the Outrage appeared at a special media event at Mercury’s famous Lake X test center and then it traveled to South Florida for public demos at the 2019 Miami International Boat Show. “The feedback we got was excellent,” Balogh says. “Everyone feels the anxiety in a busy environment like the Miami show, but it’s testament to the maturity of this product that someone can just jump aboard and use it. They’re not fighting the boat; the boat just responds. “The biggest ‘wows’ came from people who had never been boating before, but they had played video games,” he continues. “They had no old habits to break. They just had fun.” Mercury and Raymarine aren’t just seeking to woo new boaters with this assisted-docking technology. They’re also looking at millennials, recognizing that this tech-savvy generation has certain expectations. “These younger people have backup cameras in their cars, so of course they expect cameras on their boats,” Balogh says. “It’s natural. We have smart cars now and smart homes. It’s time to put the ‘smart’ into boating.” And experienced boaters, this technology is for you too, because it’s not designed to replace the captain. At its heart, DockSense is meant to provide support and valuable assistance. “It brings the person and the machine together,” Balogh says. “Our drivability calibration team at Mercury — the people who make sure our propulsion systems work and drive well — are highly experienced, and they’re the fussiest people in the building. They realize there’s only so much a person can do, and even the old-timers recognize they can get distracted and things can happen.” Essentially, the new technology is about making boating easier. Going hands-free at the dock The folks at Volvo Penta are also committed to easy boating. In fact, the company has an appropriately named Easy Boating initiative that kicked off in 2011. “Easy Boating is a strategy to break down the perceived barriers that deter people from getting into boating,” says Ron Huibers, president and CEO of Volvo Penta of the Americas. “This is done by harnessing new technologies that will make

it easier for boatbuilders to design, manufacture and sell new boats, while also delivering to customers a happy, worry-free experience and easy-to-operate boating lifestyle.” Volvo Penta has always been at the forefront of industry firsts, starting with the Aquatic sterndrive in 1959, saildrives in 1973 and DuoProps in 1983. Fast forward to the new century and we saw the introduction of Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) in 2003, the Inboard Performance System in 2005, joysticks in 2006, Glass Cockpit in 2013, Forward Drive in 2015, and more recently the 2019 Seven Marine Innovation Award outboard performance system. What’s next? In the last year, Volvo Penta has unveiled an advanced, hands-free, self-docking solution that it plans to officially launch in 2020. The public got a sneak peek in June 2018 during the Volvo Ocean Race stopover in Gothenburg, Sweden. In a live demonstration, the joystick-controlled Volvo Penta IPS system, coupled with sensors and advanced navigation processing power, maneuvered a 68-foot yacht into a tight space between two 65-foot racers. With this complete, integrated system, the sensors and onboard computers can react in milliseconds to changing wind and sea conditions and make adjustments both to power and the steering angle of the IPS drive. The docking process can also pause, with the system holding the boat stationary. Here’s how it works: As the boat nears its berth, the system
recognizes that it has entered a “catch zone” and sends a signal to the captain that it’s ready to dock. Once the captain activates the self-docking function, the boat moves into a dock-ready position. Then, at this final stage, the system uses a combination of GPS and sensors (which are fitted onboard and to the destination dock) to maneuver that boat into its berth safely. Throughout this process, the onboard EVC system computes all steering and drive calculations in relation to the boat’s actual position and the four sensors on the dock. That gives the boat its automated docking capability. While this unique system is hands-free, it’s not intended to be fully autonomous any more than a self-parking system is. The captain needs to remain at the helm and oversee the docking process, ready to intervene if necessary. According to Volvo Penta, the new system will not only be available for the latest IPS-equipped boats once it’s introduced, but the company is also working on a retrofit version. While neither system is currently available to production manufacturers or the public yet, Mercury Marine and Volvo Penta are working hard on their prototypes and development trials. And, with these leaps forward in innovation and engineering, they’re leading the charge toward a new — and utterly 21st century — concept of boating. ★

Fishing Fun-damentals Cast a line and reel in the catch safely with these helpful tips. y first fishing pole was a cane with several feet of line, an orange bobber and a well-used hook. I dug my own worms and put them on by myself. At six or seven years old, my brother, Steve, trained me to fish, and almost every afternoon we went two doors down to the pond, home to George the alligator. We caught brim and spot and would let go of the pole when George grabbed the fish; that only happened once and we ran away quickly. Whether you’re using a cane pole at the shore or the most expensive fish finder on a million-dollar boat, fishing is exciting and the basics remain true. Here are some tips for the safest fishing experience.

Avoid the fine Before you fish, be sure to purchase a recreational freshwater fishing license. They will vary in cost by state, and prices are affected if you’re a resident, non-resident, or senior, and may be available in annual or hourly formats. Michigan, for example, has eight different license types for anglers, including $26 for an annual resident license, $76 for an annual non-resident and $11 for an annual senior (residents 65 and older) . Special free and reduced-fee licenses are also available. Purchase these in sporting goods stores and online (FWS.GOV/FISHING). Do your homework Check your state’s Division of Wildlife’s website for updates and information like fishing basics, tips for catching different species, prime locations, regulations, workshops and mentors, fishing associations, fishing with children and more. Find out limits for size and weight, species, catch limit and the fish that must be live-released.

Don’t forget If you’re on the water, wear a life jacket, stock the first aid kit and have the required Coast Guard equipment. Bring sunscreen, snacks and water. Also read up on how to remove an embedded fish hook. Tackle box advice 1. Organize your lures, hooks and weights in separate compartments within a closed-tight box; clear plastic boxes work well. Keep hooks rust-free by cleaning with toothpaste and a toothbrush. Sharpen hooks with a metal file or buy chemically sharpened ones.

2. Create a kit for repairing reels, rod tips, lures and waders. Add instant glue, reel oil, a lighter, electrical tape, needle-nose pliers, diagonal cutters, dental floss and razor blades. 3. Carry the right flexible knives for filleting different fish. Keep them sharp, rust-free and sheathed. Common sense 1. Use all your bait, freeze for another time, or give it to another fisherman. Never dump old bait in the water. 2. Be courteous and don’t crowd other boats. 3. Look before you cast and keep the line from tangling on the gunwales or other items on the boat. 4. Protect wildlife. Deposit short line pieces or tangled line in a plastic bottle with a screw top and recycle them on shore. 5. Be stealthy. Fish can see you hanging over the side of the boat and they can hear you. Experts say vibrating lines can also be heard. 6. Add a peel and stick measuring tape to your boat’s surface and take a photo. 7. Check harvested fish for evidence of lesions and parasites. If there, don’t release them back into the water and don’t eat them. If fish are suspect, notify the Division of Wildlife. Note: Sea lamprey is a non-native parasitic eel-like fish that has affected Great Lakes fishing. There are many recipes for cooking and eating them (though, personally, no thanks). Report a tagged fish Thousands of tagged fish are released each year by the Division of Wildlife to study behavior, catch patterns, survival rates and other information. If you catch a tagged fish, note the following: Date, fish length, fish weight, tag color and type (with its numbers and letters), GPS location, water depth if possible and if it’s kept or released. Then file this information online (find your state’s website at FWS.GOV/OFFICES/STATELINKS.HTML). Clean the hull Avoid transferring pollutants or creatures to other waters by cleaning the hull after fishing. Pressurized water will loosen debris, then use a small amount of boat soap with a synthetic sponge or soft cloth and a bit of elbow grease. It’s easier to clean the hull while wet. For heavier deposits, consider using biodegradable products like Simple Green Marine or Slimy Grimy. Otherwise, products with muriatic acid (think hydrochloric acid) like MaryKate and On & Off are heavy-duty and need protective glasses, gloves and clothing. Wash the boat in a designated area, making sure the runoff does not directly flow into the water, before moving the boat to other waters. ★

Watersport Paddling Fun Know-how to get started on kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.
M
any boat kids (including my own) are anxious to join in on the growing popularity of watersports with kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. And why wouldn’t they? Paddling is a great on-water activity to enhance your boat time that adults and kids can enjoy together. Our kids have limited experience with paddling sports, but they are very eager to learn how to take their love of the water to the next level this coming season. There’s a certain sense of independence that comes with paddling around in control of your own vessel. With an oar in hand, they can become the captain of their own ship while exploring the coastline. It’s fun for kids — with the secret bonus of great exercise! Of course, with any new venture on the water, we like to make sure that kids are ready to balance responsibility with the good times. Arming them with the right gear and paddling know-how will ensure your kids are able and ready to take the plunge with these paddlesport activities.

Learn the basics Our first outing with stand-up paddleboards came with some basic how-to instructions from a watersports rental place on a nearby lake. Instructors took a few minutes teaching our kids the basics of standing and paddling techniques before sending them out on the board. It’s a good idea to tap into the expertise of someone with experience. With SUPs, there’s a definite learning curve on balance and control — although this is something that many kids seem to do better than adults! Calmer waters on low wind days will help greatly with first-timers. For kayaking, our kids already had some experience on a small creek at their summer camp. Although they were confident in their skills, we wanted to be sure of their abilities before letting them paddle off on bigger bodies of water. Balance and control of your paddling are also important with kayaking. Pick the right gear There’s a variety of gear available for paddlesports ranging from basic, low-budget models to higher-end professional gear. They even have hybrid models that combine both SUP and kayak capabilities into one unit. Many boaters also like inflatable models that don’t require a lot of storage room on the boat, and there are many sturdy inflatable models on the market that offer a similar level of performance as hard plastic ones.
You may be tempted to get a double kayak that allows you to paddle with your child; however, tandem-style kayaks can actually be more difficult to control and may be too large to store on your boat. In this case, a smaller, single size may work best for a child to maneuver and for you to stow away. Be safe on the water It goes without saying that you should always wear a life jacket while using a kayak or SUP, but we’ll say it again! Both kids and adults need to wear life jackets to be safe on the water in any small craft, and it’s especially important when paddling in a kayak or SUP that can tip over in the water. Another good safety precaution is establishing boundaries for young paddlers. Where is the safest place for your kids to paddle? Is there a good spot with calm water that is away from boat traffic? We chose to start our kids paddling along the coastline behind our boat when anchored out so that we can keep an eye on them. The water is also calm, shallow and far away from boat traffic in the channel. Paddling against the current or wind can wear a child out, so you’ll want to make sure they don’t paddle too far away and not have enough energy to fight a current and make it back. With kids, paddling in pairs is always a good idea. The mobility of paddling gear allows you to easily take it with you on a boat trip or drop the gear into your local river or lake for an afternoon. With the right gear and guidance, your kids will no doubt have a great time exploring new and familiar waterways on a kayak or stand-up paddleboard. The only question now: Will you be able to keep up with them? ★

Bring on the fun Versatile seating suggests Monterey has considered every way to bring fun to the water. In the cove or at anchor, the aft-facing seat with gas assisted flip-up bolster turns a chair into a lounger or flattens to become a sunpad. Underway, simply reverse the bolster, and the cockpit now features an L-shaped bench seat. The 305SS offers comfortable double seating right behind the captain’s seat equipped with flipdown armrests and the ability to recline back fully. The passenger side can also be turned from a forward-facing seat into a lounge by moving the bolster. As for the captain, the extra wide helm seat moves forward or backward, includes a flip-up bolster, armrests and exemplifies

SeaDek swim platform inlay that really enhances the look and feel of the 305SS. Recessed and hidden in the platform is a four-step stainless steel ladder. It’s mounted starboard and pointed away from the engines.
A trendsetter Although the boat is rated for 600 hp, we discovered that the twin Mercury V-8 250s provide more than enough power. With a topspeed in excess of 60 mph, a robust launch onto plane and an optional joystick, the best-looking package is the optional white cowling. These new Mercs have an ingeniously designed cowling; a near seamless hatch flips up, much like your car’s gas cap access panel, allowing for a very quick oil check. No need to remove the entire cowling.
For those who are kid-less and envision more entertainment, consider adding the wetbar that includes a solid surface insert, sink, faucet, trash receptacle and storage. Included in the standard version is a nicely appointed and large head compartment with porta-potti. However, I’d recommend the electric head system with holding tank. Another cool feature is the optional electric folding radar arch that lowers at the push of a button. Although the boat is nearly 32 feet long with outboards, towing to remote launch ramps with lowhanging branches or inside winter storage or drystacks all present some height considerations. By the way, this boat weighs in at 7,200 pounds.
Throughout the boat are recessed 12V outlets and USB charging ports. Heaven forbid we had a family day without noses pressed to smartphones! In any case, there is an MP3 connector for your own playlist convenience. As more boats transition to outboards, the benefit of bilge storage becomes a welcome addition. The entire aft sunpad lifts on gas-assist shocks to provide access to batteries, switches and pumps, as well as a very generous storage area for fenders, lines, water hoses, boat brushes and all that extra stuff Aunt Betty brought that will never see the light of day. In the past, Monterey has always kept up with market trends in boat design, but this time the 305SS is a trendsetter. H

f you are not familiar with the name Galeon Yachts, you better step it up. Founded in 1982, Galeon Yachts has had a foothold in the European markets. Since 2016, this Polish boatbuilder is becoming a player in the American boating sector. Its models from 40 to 78 feet are distributed mainly through the MarineMax dealer network across North America. One model, in particular, is the Galeon 485 HTS. With a two-stateroom, two-head layout below and plenty of social areas on the main deck, the 485 HTS will certainly be an attractive model to families entering the market, as well as those downsizing to a more manageable yacht that offers space and function with a high-end feel.

Styled as an express model, Galeon creates the lower level as a destination unto itself. Down five steps from the main deck, the galley/salon area is roomy thanks to the 13-foot, 11-inch beam and 6-foot, 11-inch headroom. Side windows with opening ports are found on either side, and a skylight floods ambient light into the area. To port, the galley has a two-burner electric stove, split stainless sinks with a dedicated storage spot for the cover, an under-counter fridge and a built-in microwave. Want counter space? There’s plenty of it. Storage? Upper and lower. Classy fit and finish? Choose between high-gloss walnut or beach wood grey cabinetry. Walls are accented by light suede materials. Across is a U-shaped dinette with a pedestal table that rotates and flips open for a larger dining area. For extra guests, the table lowers and converts into a berth. Details abound and include grabrails for the stairs, wood inlay designs on the doors, blended non-skid on the steps, beefy door handles and latches, thick diamond-stitched backrests for the dinette and a wall-mounted, 32-inch flat-screen TV.

Sleep in comfort
Midship is the full-beam master stateroom. Two items to note are the portside sofa, long enough to stretch out on, and the squared hullside windows. There are two fixed windows on each side and a third opening port for cross ventilation. The queen berth is centerline with storage underneath and a decorative, padded headboard. To starboard is a full-length credenza with storage within. Interesting is the ceiling — not flat all the way across but with varying tiers due to the main deck configuration. You may have to duck a little when transiting the room, but I would rather have that in a full-beam master than cutting the room in half. You may not even sense it thanks to the openness afforded by the windows and headroom along the port side and through the stairway. A hanging locker, 32-inch flat-screen TV, sconce/ reading lights and end tables with drawers fit out the area. An air conditioning plenum runs along the ceiling, distributing the coolness across the room. The master’s private head features a hullside window and opening porthole, skylight with blinds, glass basin sink, Corian countertop and mirrored cabinets. A separate stall shower with hinged glass door includes a mirrored cabinet (not often seen) for shaving in the shower. Forward is the guest VIP stateroom, and it’s as well-appointed as the master. An island queen berth is centerline with four-drawer storage below. Hullside windows with ports and a grand overhead skylight bring in ambient light. A beautiful wood lattice frame converts the skylight into a piece of art. The VIP has a private entrance to the day head, which has all the same features as the master head and doubles as a shower with a protective curtain. Galeon utilizes the design expertise of U.K.-based Tony Castro Yacht Design, a group that has more than 500 production, superyachts and sailing yacht designs completed. With that kind of experience, you understand Galeon’s desire to build the best yachts from one of the best designers.
Main attraction
The magic doesn’t end there, as Galeon has done an exceptional job with the layout of the main deck, from stem to stern. At the aft end, there is a 4-foot hydraulic swim platform for water access for the toys or as a beach to chill. A staircase extends from a built-in position for access back to the deck. The platform also acts as a tender lift, as there is a garage in the transom. Twin staircases from the platform do different jobs. The port side takes you straight up to the portside deck. The starboard stairs offer access to the side deck and aft cockpit. Surprising is the large U-shaped aft deck seating — it’s huge! There’s a dual pedestal table that makes this a great dining destination. Or drop the table and add the filler

cushions for one party-sized sunpad. Opt for the SureShade aft deck electric awning that extends from the hardtop. Galeon got it right again with the aft bulkhead. To enter the salon, the glass door slides to port in front of the framed glass window. For that open feel, press a button and the window/ door combination recesses into the bulkhead to give a clean changeover from two distinct areas into one large social area. Inside, there’s a large portside dining area with U-shaped settee and wood pedestal table. Thanks to the sizable side windows, single-pane forward windshield and recessed aft door/window, visibility is excellent in all directions; this is perfect for guests and the operator alike. Even though there is a galley below, Galeon created a wetbar/galley unit across from the dining area. A flip-up top reveals a stainless sink and Corian counter. A fridge/ freezer is below the counter, as is storage. This is a smart area for serving afternoon cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, or for plating and cleaning up dinner.

Forward of the wetbar is the helm station. Multi-tiered yet with a sleek, low-profile look, the console houses a 12-inch Raymarine multifunction touch-screen display, a Volvo Penta engine monitoring display, rocker switches and a fixed steering wheel. Throttle controls and joystick are on the right-side console. Ergonomically, the twin helm seat has a flip-up bolster, a built-in footrest and a drop-down platform for elevated line-of-sight visibility. A side power window is a nice touch for fresh air or speaking to a dock attendant. Overhead are skylight panels, with the forward section opening as a sunroof. Horsepower is compliments of twin Volvo Penta IPS600 drive trains, offering 435 hp each. Access the engine room via a hatch in the aft deck. It’s a little tight for a guy like me but is workable. With a cruising speed of 25 knots, the hull design knows how to manage the speed and the seas if caught out in the snot. It’s a sure-footed ride, and with the tabs set right, the bow will maintain an upright angle and slice through as expected. Top speed is just over 30 knots.
All in the family

f you’re like me, your dog is part of the family. No way you’re going to leave him or her (or them!) at home while you’re having adventures on the boat. Most dogs love the boating life and adapt to it very quickly. New places, new smells, new people and the chance to be outdoors are what most dogs love. Of course, you know your own dog better than anyone and are the best judge of whether they’d like the experience. Just as with people, there are some dogs that never take to the boating life. When we began cruising, we couldn’t imagine that we could have a dog aboard. But after meeting a few cruising dogs, we saw how much one added to the experience. In 2004, we adopted Paz and brought her aboard our boat. And so we began figuring out the realities of having a dog as part of the crew. No two ways about it, small dogs are easier to take on boats than large dogs. You can easily pick them up to put them aboard or in the dinghy. It’s easier to confine them to a safe space when docking or anchoring. They’re not likely to jump to the dock without permission. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t take a larger dog on a boat! A ramp will help considerably with getting them on and off the boat, such as the Solvit PetSafe Deluxe Dog Ramp, available on Amazon. My assistant, Pamela Webster, swears by it for her golden retriever, Honey (pictured top left). At 7 feet long, it easily bridges the gap to the dock and makes getting into a dinghy a snap. Other friends have rigged it to allow their dog to go up and down the companionway. Larger dogs do have the advantage when it comes to rougher weather. Being larger, they are simply less likely to break bones or otherwise be injured. However, Paz, a 7-pound bit of fluff, has sailed with us in gale-force winds and 8-foot seas with no injuries. On both of our boats, we have made sure that she has a safe place to go when things get boisterous — one that is padded all around and where nothing can fall on her.
AGILITY
The more agile the dog, the easier time they’ll have navigating the deck in general and keeping their footing underway. But you can help with cushioned, non-slip mats at points where they have to jump up or down. Keeping their nails trimmed also helps. And if your dog likes to walk on the dinghy tubes, adding some non-slip shower stick-on strips helps their footing immensely.
HARNESS AND TETHERING
Even if your dog is agile, it’s best to keep them tethered underway so they don’t go sliding across the boat — or overboard. Hook the tether (we use her leash) to a tight-fitting harness; a collar can break their neck if they go sliding. For larger dogs, the Help ‘Em Up harness is great as it also has handles to help lift them when necessary (HELPEMUP.COM).

Lifeline netting will help keep dogs on deck and seems to help them feel more confident walking down narrow sidedecks. Bonus: It will probably save a few tools from going overboard too! You can get very high-quality netting at a good price from Seamar (Seattle Marine & Fishing Supply Co., SEAMARNETS.COM). But never just rely on the netting; use a harness and leash when the dog is on deck while underway.

GOING ASHORE
Exploring new places is a dog’s dream. Always leash your dog as you go ashore so that you can first assess appropriateness for going off-leash. Are there any hazards? Unfriendly animals or people? Leash laws? If your dog has any aggressive tendencies — toward people, other dogs or anything else — don’t let them off-leash until you have thoroughly scouted the area and made sure that what seems to be a deserted island with no one else ashore really is deserted. Be sure to take water along and a cup or bowl to drink from. This is doubly important in hot weather. On beaches, most dogs enjoy wading to cool down; some are energetic swimmers. Always keep an eye on them, though, particularly when there are waves or a current. Obviously, always clean up after your dog. No one wants to step in dog poop, particularly if going barefoot on the beach. The good news is that most businesses that cater to cruisers are dog-friendly. Grocery stores and medical facilities generally don’t allow dogs, but most other stores do. And almost every restaurant with an outside seating area welcomes dogs there. Always ask, though!

ELIMINATION ONBOARD
The most frequent question I get about having a dog on our boat is what do we do about her bathroom needs. And no, we don’t take her ashore multiple times a day. Teaching your dog to poop and pee on a piece of carpet or Astroturf on the bow of your boat is an absolutely worthwhile endeavor. Whether you’re underway for more than a few hours or anchored out overnight, it’s infinitely easier if you don’t have a dog who is desperate to go ashore. Put your chosen mat on the bow, away from where people sit. If you’re lucky, you can get one that another dog has used (or you can use a specimen cup and “pre-scent” it yourself). Leash your dog up in the cockpit, just like you were going for a business walk ashore. Walk them to the mat and say whatever you normally say to indicate it’s a good spot (for us, it’s “get busy”). Let them sniff to understand what the mat is for and keep them there until they do their thing, then praise highly. Tie the mat down with a bit of line, and once a day clean it off, then dunk it overboard to rinse it. his summer, sailing vessels from around the world will be visiting 11 host ports in Canada and the U.S. during the spectacular Tall Ships Challenge: Great Lakes 2019. The ships will be the centerpiece of maritime festivals, with opportunities to board, meet the captains and crew, and even set sail on these incredible ships. Coordinating the vessels that participate in the event is Tall Ships America, an international organization that represents more than 250 tall ships and sail-training vessels from 25 countries. Each year, the Tall Ships Challenge rotates around the Atlantic, Pacific and Great Lakes coasts of America. This year, 23 extraordinary ships from around the planet will be participating in a series of races and rallies throughout the Great Lakes, all to bring awareness to our beautiful natural resource.

The city’s award-winning Tall Ship Celebration takes place July 18-21 on the banks of the Saginaw River and is organized by BaySail, the owner and operator of the two Appledore gaff schooners. In addition to Bay City, the Challenge will stop in the U.S. ports of Buffalo, Cleveland, Green Bay, Kenosha and Erie, as well as the Canadian ports of Toronto, Sarnia, Midland, Kingsville and Brockville. The races and port festivals are to remind people about maritime ships and awaken the imagination to the possibilities of adventure and education available while sailing the waters of the world. Erin Short, director of the Tall Ships Challenge, says it’s a very visible way to promote sail-training. “At the port stops, folks are encouraged to see and touch [the ships] and can talk to the crews,” she says. “We want people to know that anyone can sail on these ships!” The vessels are all crewed by professional mariners who teach traditional sailing techniques. “Climbing rigging,

What is a tall ship? Although the term “tall ship” had been used occasionally in early sailing days, it was the spectacular 1956 race from Torbay to Lisbon that inspired the formation of the Sail Training Association (STA), which ultimately led to the formation of Tall Ships America (TSA). Today, the term “tall ship” is used frequently as a generic description of traditional sailing vessels of all rigs. There are many different types of sailing ships, but they all have certain basic things in common. Every sailing ship has a hull, rigging, and at least one mast to hold up the sails that use the wind to power the ship. Ballast weighs down the bottom of the ship so the wind does not push it over. mending sails and navigating using the sun are all part of it,” Short explains. “The port visits provide a place to highlight this, with the maritime festivities as a backdrop.” Many of the ships participating in the Challenge race series have berths available for an incredible introduction to sailing aboard tall ships.

Traditionally rigged and operated sail-training ship Picton Castle returns this year (the last visit was in 2006), and Captain Dirk Lorenzen, who’s in command this summer, explains that they join in the Challenge when they can fit it in the schedule between longer deep-sea sail-training voyages and excursions throughout the world’s oceans. The 284-ton barque Picton Castle is based in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, and while at sea she also delivers supplies and educational materials to many of the remote islands she visits. “Joining in this series of fleet movements and port visits is nice because we get to meet people and share our ship and way of seagoing life with them,” Lorenzen says. “What we really like is how keen folks are to see the ships. It’s a chance to teach our crew hospitality and how to give a good ship tour. We see open ship days as just another form of seamanship, and we are proud of the quality and charm of our receptions.” Lorenzen is quick to mention the camaraderie his crew feels in spending time with their peers in the various ports. “It is always good to see the other ships and meet the crew,” he says. “We also like to share the Picton Castle with the other ships, too, as we see them so rarely.” Picton Castle will be joining the fleet in Bay City, although not all the vessels visit every host port.
TALL SHIP CELEBRATION
Bay City has been recognized and awarded the prestigious “Port of the Year” four times by Tall Ships America — more than any other port in North America. Celebrating 18 years of award-winning maritime festivals, BaySail Director of Marketing Scott Ellis works closely with longtime Event Coordinator Shirley Roberts and says it’s all about showing hospitality. He points out that the city’s welcome reception to those attending the festival has been the key to success. After the events each day, Ellis says folks head into town, where there are many other tie-ins and activities.
“Our festival is a very family focused event, where we strive to make sure that there are a lot of learning opportunities for kids,” Ellis says. “With two city parks across the river from each other, we make sure there are lots of activities with no additional costs beyond the event admission charges.” The Bay City Tall Ship Celebration begins on Thursday with the Parade of Sail, as the fleet arrives in Saginaw Bay from the deep, blue waters of Lake Huron. According to Captain Lorenzen, this is not always as effortless as it seems. “Parades of Sail can be, to use an oft-used word, ‘challenging,’ to say the least,” he says. “Good planning and excellent communication are very important. Getting underway in such close quarters is a situation that is pretty unnatural for a sailing ship. In a parade situation, all these ships get in line, set the sail in a crowded harbor and maneuver as close as they can while helicopters fly overhead and bands play — you can’t even hear yourself! It’s amazing there are so few incidents.”
CAPTURE THE IMAGINATION
As the fleet arrives, there is often a collective intake of breath by those on shore. The ships are otherworldly, seemingly from another time. Some are sleek and streamlined, others bulky and imposing. The rich warmth of a polished teak deck, bold primary colors of signal flags and the crisp white sails fluttering in the breeze all flow into the energy that suggests adventure is just beyond the horizon. It captures the imagination and takes those attending the festivals to another realm, one full of possibilities. “Even in this day and age where virtual reality is commonly mistaken for the real thing, I know for a fact that there are boys and girls out there who dream about running away to sea, just like I did so many moons ago,” says Captain Lorenzen. He encourages getting up close and personal while the vessels are in port. “There is a great variety of ships out there, catering to all manner of clientele. Touch them, smell them, listen to their peculiar noises, and then get involved.” Each festival held throughout the season features similar elements. They lead with the Parade of Sail, charge a daily admission rate, and a Souvenir Passport to board the ships is available. Sail-Away tickets offer a memorable experience sure to thrill young and old alike. Most ports provide live musical entertainment, historical exhibits, crafts for the kiddos, food, beverages, parking and shuttle services. “Our mission is to encourage environmental stewardship of the Saginaw Bay watershed and the Great Lakes, and provide learners of all ages opportunities for personal growth through both shipboard and land-based educational experiences,” Ellis says of BaySail. Many of the other host ports would echo that sentiment and are making a collective effort in local communities to help ensure the spectacular Great Lakes not only survive but thrive. ★

hen you cruise the waters of Canada’s North Channel — an Ontario waterway widely considered one of the world’s best freshwater boating destinations — Manitoulin Island is your constant companion. Guarding this pristine passage from the winds and waves of Lake Huron, Manitoulin boasts rugged limestone cliffs, great stands of primal forest and friendly villages where you can people-watch from dockside patios, sipping local “Swing Bridge” golden ale from Manitoulin Brewing Co. Manitoulin is home to the hardy. European settlers who first arrived earned the name of “Haweaters” after a winter of surviving on local Hawberries. That legacy lives on today in the August “Haweater Weekend,” a celebration featuring events from street dances to wood-carving competitions. Manitoulin is home to substantial tracts
of First Nations land, while First Nations residents comprise 40% of her population. She is the home, according to First Nations traditions, of Gitchi Manitou (that’s how she got her name). She is the home, in short, of the Great Spirit. Cruise here — tying up on Manitoulin or dropping the hook in a bay decorated by pink granite and pine — and you’ll be convinced the Great Spirit has pretty good taste in real estate.

Huron, stretching from the furthest reaches of the Thirty Thousand Islands (another popular boating destination) to the Michigan border. Rhumbline from Chicago to Mac is roughly 289 nautical miles; from Port Huron to Mac it’s around 220 nautical miles. Although Manitoulin Island is 100 miles long, her population is only around 13,000. These factors contribute to the fantastic feeling of solitude you experience here. On the other hand, it’s still possible to experience city life, Manitoulin-style. Book a berth at Spider Bay Marina then stroll Little Current’s main street. Check out Turner’s of Little Current — old-fashioned general store meets hardware downstairs, combination art gallery/trading post/local museum upstairs. Pull up a patio chair at Anchor Inn Grill for some of the best whitefish on the Great Lakes. Do dessert up
the hill at 3 Cows and a Cone, which boasts local Farquhar’s ice cream that’s every bit as delicious as the whitefish. Stop in at Gore Bay to pick up gifts at Fish Point Studio for those you left behind. Take in a play at the Gore Bay Summer Theatre, or do dinner at the waterfront Rocky Raccoon Café, where Asian and Manitoulin cuisine join in a delicious partnership. Another local favorite is Buoys Eatery on the Gore Bay harbor, offering handcrafted pizza, fresh and locally sourced trout and craft beers. Speaking of craft beer, sample Manitoulin Island’s very own Split Rail Brewing Co. small-batch beers on the brewery’s lakeside patio. Brush up on local history at the Marine Centre in the Gore Bay Museum or visit the Assiginack Museum Heritage Complex in Manitowaning, which contains artifacts from the island’s early settlers.
When an errant bear climbed onto a boat off Heywood Island, boaters were first warned here. When storms lash the Channel, people hear about it here. “Here” is the brainchild of local boater Roy Eaton, who produces Cruisers Net every morning of the season from July 1 to August 31. Want to be part of it? Tune in to VHF Channel 71 at 0900 hours. “We start with emergency contact information in cooperation with the Coast Guard,” Eaton says. The next segment is the weather, then the news of the day, “[From] baseball scores to world events.” The final segment — a huge draw — is the boater call-in, where boaters can share information or simply reach out to other boaters. But Cruisers Net isn’t just this “virtual” water cooler. “If you’re in Little Current on Fridays between 3 and 5 in the afternoon, come and join us for Happy Hours at Anchor Inn Grill,” Eaton says. Eaton is modest about this service that’s become a boating institution for the past 15 years. “I’ve gained more than I’ve given,” he says. “That’s because up here we’re a wonderful boating community.” For more information, visit CRUISERSNET.NET.

The well-favored passage
In her guide to the North Channel, “Well-Favored Passage,” author Marjorie Cahn Brazer describes the waterway as “A flight of the soul to a distant haunt — of peace, of timelessness, of mystery… of aching beauty.” If you’ve never cruised the North Channel — the main reason boaters come this far north — you’d consider Brazer’s description over-the-top. If you have plied these waters you’d think it an understatement. “Cruising here means wilderness boating,” Brazer writes. “No cottagers — almost anywhere — to chase you away.” This unique boating experience is partly due to the region’s isolated location and partly because Manitoulin herself is sparsely populated. Some of the most popular North Channel islands are even more isolated. Many are Crown land (government-owned, so completely free of any development). Many, owned by First Nations bands, only host transient fish camps. The ambiance of the North Channel is also a result of sheer numbers: Roughly 350 islands are scattered across this 70-mile-long passage sandwiched between Manitoulin’s north coast and the northern Ontario mainland. Add in the spectacular scenery of LaCloche Mountains, the landscape of the Canadian Shield and the sheer cliffs of Manitoulin herself, and you’ve got an irresistible combination of isolation and beauty that once inspired an iconic congregation of Canadian painters known as the Group of Seven.

Take a hike
If you want to get off the boat and stretch those muscles you’ll find plenty of options here — just take a hike. Head east from the docks at Kagawong, past Edwards Art Studio in the old mill building, then onto the trailhead. Follow the banks of the Kagawong River until you emerge from the shade into a glade dominated by sun-dappled Bridal Veil Falls. Cool off in the pool reclining at the base of this cascade, then follow the road back to your boat, stopping for some well-earned Belgian chocolate at Manitoulin Chocolate Works. Hug the shores of Gore Bay during your stroll along the boardwalk, or climb the Noble Nature Trail, taking in panoramic views of the Channel. Gaze over sapphire waters decorated by a lace collar of whitecaps from your perspective atop limestone cliffs 800 feet high; admire the village snugged down across the bay. Make for points east, dropping hook in Baie Fine and hiking up the old logging road for magnificent views, then swim in a secret lake nestled in granite, named Topaz for the hues of its water.

The drum echoes across the expanse of the powwow grounds on the First Nations land known as Wikwemikong on the first day of the annual Cultural Festival, held at the beginning of August. As the drums beat — symbolic of the heartbeat of the people — voices begin to sing, eerie, haunting, strangely beautiful. As gray smoke rises from the spirit fire that burns through the whole event, different sounds join in: The excited giggling of children and the jingle of bells on costumes as bright as the plumage of birds in mating dances. Welcome to one of North America’s longest-running and biggest competitive powwows. Dancers leap in fancy dress,
shuffle in smoke dances. “Debajehmujig,” — or “story-telling” — is a live theater, dance and multimedia presentation highlighting this place and these people who call it home. Maybe take a break from the spectacle and explore the nearby grounds. Experience Anishinaabe cuisine, learn the story of the drum or pick up First Nations art. Even if you don’t make it for this special celebration, Manitoulin boasts a wealth of First Nations activities, attractions and arts. Welcome to the home of the Great Spirit.

Travel some 15 nautical miles and pass through narrow channels of jade-colored waters between wind-crippled pines and mountains of quartzite that look like snow-capped peaks. Glide past 12 islands, four cottages and five other cruising boats. Off Croker Island, throttle down when you spot a black bear swimming off your stern. Watch, drifting, mesmerized, until he climbs ashore, shakes himself thoroughly and turns to scowl at you before disappearing into a pristine forest of pine, birch and aspen. Now in the Benjamin Islands, drop anchor. Dinghy ashore and scramble onto outcroppings of pink granite to watch a perfect sunset paint the waters of the North Channel orange, then red, then purple. As night steals over this South Benjamin oasis, gaze at distant Manitoulin, guarding the southern horizon like an indigo castle. The stars come out and Aurora Borealis lights up the night sky. Presque Isle State Park Marina Lake Erie marina offers plenty to see and do.
W
hat began as an engineering project in the 1950s and ’60s and turned into a national landmark in the late 1970s has now grown into a Lake Erie must-see. While Presque Isle State Park is only seven and a half miles long, there’s no shortage of things to do. The peninsula directly off of Erie, Pennsylvania, gets about four million visitors a year, according to Matt Greene, the park operations manager. And there’s a good reason that number is so high. There are 13.5 miles of multipurpose trails along the park, nine places to swim with a total of seven miles of beaches, more than 300 species of birds on the isle, a free shuttle service that takes you off and on the peninsula and a 75-foot tower where views of the sunset can’t be beat. Plus, with water becoming warmer in the summer, the area draws in shipwreck divers who come to explore the many wrecks off the coast of Presque Isle. “We’re well known for our beaches,” Greene says. “[And] our section of the lake is on the shallower end, so scuba diving those wrecks has become popular.”

All of these entertainment opportunities make the 500slip marina on the peninsula the icing on the cake. Each slip was designed to be transient, and with a quick call ahead (814-833-0176), one of them can be yours — even day-of. Slips for boats up to 42 feet, lifts, gas, diesel, pump-out, four public launch ramps, showers and laundry are all located on-site, allowing you to fill up, tie up, freshen up and then explore Erie’s downtown. If there’s ever a time to do just that, it’s July. On the last weekend of the month, more than 100,000 people descend on the peninsula for Discover Presque Isle (this year July 26–28). This three-day, family friendly event features a local artisan craft show, giant bonfire, nature awareness activities, live music on the beach, tours of the Presque Isle Lighthouse, a sunset kite display at Sunset Point, a sand sculpture competition and more. Just like the isle, there’s no limit to what you can do at the event. Discover Presque Isle serves as an annual fundraiser for the State Park. “There’s something for everybody that weekend,” Greene says. H

Bill Drackett has summered at Lakeside Chautauqua, a historic community established in 1873 on the western basin of Lake Erie, every summer of his life. Bill is a fourth-generation “Lakesider,” which is something the locals like to boast about. Growing up, Bill always enjoyed the elegant lines of Chris-Craft boats. In 2004, when he decided to take the plunge, he found a 1930 24-foot Triple Cockpit. It was in Lake Tahoe where it had taken “Best of Show.” He brought it back to Lakeside, which has a very active wooden boating community. For many obvious reasons, he named it Tradition. The Dracketts have enjoyed Tradition taking them on many special family times, sunset cruises and family engagement photos. Bill and his wife, Mame, along with other dedicated wooden boat friends formed the Lakeside Wooden Boat Society in 2004. Mame is also the director of the Lakeside Wooden Boat Show (July 21 this year). It’s a family obsession!
