ello Lakeland readers! Sarah here — I’m a past assistant editor and a contributing writer for the magazine. Early on April 7, we added a new member to our Lakeland crew: Cohen Gabriel Bush. We’re so excited for Kate and her husband, and I hope you join us in wishing her congratulations on her new addition! In the meantime, I’ll be taking the helm while Kate is on maternity leave. This month’s issue is all about cruising. Kelsie Sullivan details her and her husband’s decision to cruise the Great Loop and their experiences along the way (p. 42). You can also add the historic Saugatuck, Michigan, this month’s Port of Call, to your list of cruising destinations (p. 46). Looking to change it up? Heather Steinberger decides to finally give personal watercraft a try in her Sea-Doo feature (p. 38). While cruising is a great way to escape and unwind with friends and family, we encourage you to keep an eye on the impacts your state’s COVID-19 regulations may have on boating access. Each state is operating on it’s own guidelines and timelines, so pay attention especially if you plan on cuising over state lines. Contact your state’s Department of Natural Resources directly for guidance. If you have kids, you should also check out Diane Seltzer’s column on cruising with kids and “nautical distancing” during these unusual times (p. 24). I hope you’re staying safe and healthy, and that I’ll see you out on the water soon. ★

A multi BWI award-winning journalist, Capt. Ken Kreisler began his nautical career while in high school, spending summers doing odd jobs in the boatyard of a local marina in Brooklyn, New York. He worked his way through undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate academic studies as the skipper of his own six-pack charter boat. Upon completion of his degree, he secured his first job as a writer in the marine industry and never looked back. Capt. EPA Gives Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Additional Funds

The Environmental Protection Agency has allocated $20 million in additional funds to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The money will be split between several organizations and projects. The Accelerate the Cleanup and Restoration of Great Lakes Areas of Concerns will receive $7.5 million for sediment remediation and habitat restoration. The Fund Research and Development of Ballast Water Treatment Systems will get $5 million for research into ballast water treatment systems that will help reduce and prevent invasive species. Support Great Lakes will get $5 million for Asian carp and other invasive species control, as well as to restore habitats and reduce excess nutrient loads. The Support the Great Lakes Trash Free Waters Grant Program will receive $2 million to create trash-free environments for fish and wildlife, and the Support Great Lakes National Program Office will receive $500,000 for operational support. To show its appreciation for those on the frontlines of the response to COVID-19, SkipperBud’s in Milwaukee, Wisconsin has donated 50 vouchers for free half-day, weekday pontoon rentals. Those eligible for the vouchers include firefighters, EMTs, law enforcement (including state troopers and local police), doctors, nurses, nurse practicioners and other healthcare professionals. SkipperBud’s hopes first responders can use the vouchers to spend some time unwinding on the water with loved ones after working hard to help those affected by the pandemic. Water Damage Forces Closure of South Haven’s Northside Municipal Marina The Northside Municipal Marina will be closed for the entirety of the 2020 boating season in order for electrical repairs to be made. High water levels caused leakage in junction boxes at the marina and damaged the shore power electric system. Because of this, the city of South Haven decided to give 97 slip holders credit for reservations for the 2021 season or a full refund. “Our community is home to one of the major recreational ports on the Great Lakes, and our goal is to provide clean, safe and reasonably priced facilities for recreational boaters,” says Harbor Master and South Haven Assistant City Manager Kate Hosier. Edgewater Resources is conducting the repairs, which are estimated to be valued at $300,000, to bring the marina back to the national electric code. For more information, visit SOUTH-HAVEN.COM. Grass Carp Found in Tittabawassee River Near Lake Huron

Officials from the Michigan DNR found a grass carp capable of reproducing near the Dow Dam in Midland County’s Tittabawassee River on March 17. It is the first time this type of invasive fish has been discovered in a tributary of Lake Huron. Only 13 sterile grass carp have been found in the lake’s waters in the last 30 years, according to mLive.com. Grass carp are considered detrimental to the Great Lakes because their plant-heavy diet can contribute to algal bloom growth. The Michigan DNR plans to develop surveys in the area’s waters to find out where the carp were produced. Studies have shown that Lake Erie and tributaries surrounding it have had grass carp spawning. oing overboard or having a crewmember go overboard can be a traumatizing and sometimes life-threatening event. Larger ocean-going boats and yachts have some options for man overboard (MOB) warning systems but, in many cases, their cost keeps them from being a viable option for smaller craft and boaters on a budget. Recent introductions of some innovative new products, including those from Fell Marine and ACR Electronics, now allow for reasonably priced and effective MOB alarm and rescue systems for any size craft. ACR Electronics OLAS system The safety kill switch, with its seldom-used and sometimes entangling lanyard is effective at shutting the engine off if the vessel operator goes overboard. However, if the operator wants to move away from the helm, out of the range of the lanyard, a dangerous man overboard situation still could exist. With the engine(s) engaged and the operator falling overboard, the possibility remains of a rogue vessel powering away from or possibly running over the operator. To combat this problem, ACR introduced its Overboard Locator Alert System (OLAS) platform. This comprehensive MOB system consists of a selection of components that can be tailored for the smallest skiff up to larger yachts, and it’s a cost-effective way to protect all onboard. The system has small electronic transmitters called “Tags” that connect via Bluetooth to an app on a smartphone or tablet. These Tags create a virtual tether that, if the connection is broken, will emit an alarm and light signal, record the time and GPS location of the incident, illustrate the direction and course to return to the alert location, and advise on VHF a Mayday call using pre-set vessel information. The Tags are small, wrist-worn transmitters called OLAS Tags that are no bigger than a standard watch. Another option is an OLAS Float-On, which is a water-activated USB rechargeable transmitter with a built-in flashlight and strobe that’s easily clipped to a life jacket. When utilizing the app, you can connect up to six Tags or Float-On transmitters. One transmitter can also be connected to several smartphones or tablets. Expand the OLAS platform by adding an OLAS Core Base Station and a wireless engine kill switch called the OLAS Guardian. This combination will

shut off the engine when the virtual tether is broken and will allow the engine to be restarted after five seconds to perform a rescue. This combination also eliminates the need for smart devices to run the ACR app. The Core Base Station expands the platform’s capability to 15 transmitters. And if the vessel is a larger one (more than 40 feet), adding an OLAS Extender increases the platform’s range beyond 100 feet, making it viable for larger vessels. Fell Marine MOB+ Fell Marine offers its own version of an innovative and simple wireless MOB system that’s ideal for small- to medium-sized craft. Its MOB+ Basepack is made up of a small hub called the xHub that is the heart of the system. It’s the size of a standard 2-inch gauge and connects to power and the engine’s kill switch system. Compatible with all major brands of outboards and most sterndrive systems, installation and setup is simple. The Basepack is also supplied with a small xFOB transmitter. This tiny transmitter takes a regular coin-sized battery and can last up to 300 hours. If the battery dies or the captain forgets the fob, the system can be manually overridden. Up to three extra xFOBs can be added to the system; one acts as an engine stop when submerged in 4 inches of water or gets out of wireless range of the xHub, while the others activate the hub’s warning light and alarm if submerged or if out of range of the hub. The captain, crew and pets can wear the xFOBs in a variety of ways by utilizing optional wristbands, lanyards and clips. While the xHub is the heart of the system, what makes this system so simple and robust is the Wireless Marine Electronics Algorithm (WiMEA), which “is a highly advanced marine security protocol and digital data processing system utilizing high-speed link and Unique ID Technology.” Operating on a range of frequencies, WiMEA virtually eliminates any chance of interference and allows for simple programing of xFOBs and the xHub. With either of these systems, any prudent boater can now have protection against MOB incidents and can enjoy their time on the water knowing everyone onboard is better protected. ★

How to select and install the best trim tabs for your boat. ack in the age of sail, the coxswain of a ship’s tender would bellow, “Trim the dish!” to indicate that bodies needed to shift to restore the craft to proper trim. Fortunately, today’s captain doesn’t have to delicately ask guests to reposition for a smoother ride. Trim tabs provide an easy, touch-ofa-button solution for on-the-fly adjustments to level out your boat. Trim basics A properly trimmed boat is safer to operate, creates a more comfortable ride, and provides better speed and increased fuel economy. It’s a good practice to achieve static (non-moving) trim before getting underway (arrange passengers, coolers and more) as trim tabs only work while moving. Once underway, you’ll need to make adjustments to account for speed, water conditions and direction of travel (with regards to waves and wind). Smaller boats, for example, will ride bumpier in surface chop if left trimmed at calm-water angles. If you have an outboard or sterndrive, you can control bow altitude using the tilt and trim feature, but it’s trim tabs that enable you to make side-to-side adjustments.

What’s your type? Adjustable trim tabs come in two types: Hydraulic and electromechanical. The best is a matter of personal opinion; however, each has pros and cons. Hydraulic trim tab planes are controlled by hydraulic cylinders, which are powered by a hydraulic pump. The pump, motor and associated equipment is installed inside the boat in a dry, protected environment. Since they require the installation of a hydraulic pump and hoses, hydraulic trim tabs can be a bit more complicated to install than electromechanical systems. Electromechanical trim tabs utilize electric actuators to deflect trim tab planes up and down. As a result, they can provide instant response times and precise control. In an electric trim tab system, everything (electric motor and gear system) is located on the outside of the transom. This

simplifies installation, but it also runs the risks associated with electric components underwater. Both systems utilize an electronic control switch or joystick located at the helm. Pressing the switch or toggling the joystick activates the hydraulic pump or electric motor for the trim tab planes. Trim tab planes themselves come in a variety of sizes. Trim tabs for high-speed boats tend to be long and narrow, while smaller, slower boats will generally use wider, shorter planes. Installation tips and tricks Using a dealer or boatyard to install your trim tabs is a common option, but installation is well within the ability of any competent DIYer. A typical installation should take around five hours, depending on your boat. While you’ll want to follow the instructions provided by the trim tabs manufacturer, the following general tips can be applied to most installations. 1. When determining the location of the trim tab planes, keep in mind that the further the tabs are from the hull centerline, the more effective they will be. You’ll also want to make sure both tabs are symmetrical — i.e. mirror images on each side. 2. When determining the location of the trim tabs and actuators, check that there are no obstructions inside or outside of the transom. This includes double-checking that you will not be drilling into hoses, equipment or wire runs. 3. If your vessel utilizes an outboard or sterndrive, verify that the trim tab locations are outside their steering angles. 4. When drilling, run the drill in reverse until you are through the gelcoat, then switch to forward. Beveling each hole will help prevent future gelcoat cracking and provides a better seal once caulking is applied. 5. If your transom is solid fiberglass, use a quality, marine-grade sealant during the final installation. If your transom is cored, seal the exposed coring with epoxy resin to prevent water intrusion. Alternatively, drill mounting holes slightly larger than needed, fill them with thickened epoxy, then drill the properly sized hole through the epoxy plug when cured. 6. Once all holes are drilled, dry fit everything to ensure a perfect fit prior to bedding (caulking) and final installation. ★

OVID-19 is one of the most significant global crises of the century. In spring, more than 90% of U.S. citizens found themselves under stay-at-home orders, forcing businesses to scramble to find new ways to continue operations. As boat shows shut down, showrooms closed and some states even restricted access to marinas and public ramps, the marine industry faced a choice: Go dormant or dig deep. The boating industry did not turn off the lights. Instead, boating businesses leaned in hard, leveraging technology — and a little extra creativity and resourcefulness — to continue to serve the boating public. Physical boat shows, such as the Progressive Northwest Sportshow, went online. Boat International put together what it called “the largest virtual yacht show ever.” And yacht makers like Riviera and Belize joined MarineMax, Maine’s Port Harbor Marine, Florida’s United Yacht Sales, as well as countless others, in offering private online tours and virtual boat shows for current and prospective customers. Engaging with technology Denison Yachting in Florida is one of many companies that fully embraced technology. It hosted a multi-day virtual yacht show in April, with nearly 150 vessels on display with virtual tours and walk-through videos. The show even incorporated live chats with experts so show-goers could ask questions and receive guidance. Buyers could even make a deposit with the simple click of a button. Great Lakes dealers have been taking advantage of high-tech tools, too. Look no further than MarineMax in Port Clinton, Ohio. MarineMax has been offering online tours for a couple of years, so the nationwide boat and yacht retailer hit the ground running when the COVID-19 pandemic reached crisis proportions. “Governor Mike DeWine shut down our state early on,” says Ed Savage, general manager of MarineMax Ohio. “MarineMax had to be very proactive, and we started using technology that we hadn’t used in the past.” In addition to video tours of all of MarineMax’s boats, including a featured “Boat of the Week,” boaters can sign up to receive video clips via text message and stay connected through social media and email blasts.

Boaters can even watch livestreamed Facebook discussions on different boating topics. “People have been engaged because they’re home and online 24/7,” Savage says. “Old metrics are out the window. Day, time of day: It doesn’t really matter right now. E-blasts were going by the wayside, but now they’re really coming back. We’re finding that they’re great tools to communicate with our customers.” If you’re in the market for a new boat, you can even purchase your boat remotely. If you’d rather see and touch your new vessel first, however, you can rest assured that MarineMax is adhering to all recommended social distancing and hygiene protocols. “This is unprecedented, what we’re going through,” Savage says. “But we’re all in this together. Kids Need Boating Now More Than Ever

In a world of uncertainty, kids are yearning for the calming effect of boating. ll our lives took a detour from normalcy this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact on our kids has been no exception. After months of social distancing and adapting to remote schooling, thoughts of the boating season ahead have become even more wishful than past years. The only good part of “quarantine life” during the months of shutdown has been the ability to stay safe at home as a family. But, of course, there’s only so much family time stuck in the house that our kids can handle before boredom and the desire for a change of scenery sets in. As boaters, we are fortunate to have an escape. We don’t know what the remainder of summer 2020 will be like yet, but we sure are thankful we have our boats as a getaway. Of course, we suspect this year’s boating season will be a bit different. Our summer plans for boat trips may change and there may be more restrictions at our marinas. There may even be a continuation of social distancing that will extend to the water in the form of “nautical distancing.” The one thing that we can be certain of is that our kids will be very grateful to at least get out of the house and get back on the water with their families.

They know that the time we spend together as a family on the boat are some of the best memories of their childhood. We are so fortunate that boating is a shared passion that can bring us even closer together as a family — offering a bright, secure oasis in a somewhat gloomy time. Making the most of the season Our boat kids are the product of their boat parents — they start thinking about the boating season as early as winter. It ramps up into a near frenzy of excitement come spring. We all can’t wait to splash and get the season started. But for many, the start of the boating season has been delayed this year (as of this writing), shortening the already limited number of precious boating weeks and months in the Great Lakes. The best we can do is ensure we make the most of our time on the water. Our kids love boating, and each year they have big expectations as they set out to embrace all that they enjoy about our boating lifestyle. We’re hopeful we can do as much as possible on their summer boating bucket list. If we can’t go on boat trips to our favorite waterfront destinations, we’ll plan to venture past our usual anchorage spot to explore new coves and scenery. We’ll soak in the sun and cast a line. We’ll swim in the water, do endless jumps off the swim platform, work on our paddling skills and end our days admiring amazing sunsets. Boating gives your kids the ability to appreciate the outdoors and connect with nature in new ways every year. This year may be different, but I have no doubt that we all can still create summer boat experiences that will become lifelong memories for kids to treasure with their family. ★

Towables like water tubes provide a fun way to get on the water. Here’s how to tube safely.

don’t look for a speed rush, especially on the water. One might say I’m a chicken; however, I love watching others having fun on a towable. Tubing is great fun for all ages, from the seasoned watersports enthusiast to the first-timer. To enjoy the experience without incident, invest in reliable, safe equipment and use common sense. Here are some towable safety suggestions. Choose wisely Today’s towables aren’t like truck innertubes; they have advanced designs with different price tags. However, the price does not dictate the quality. Check online reviews and look for durability, balance, multiple season use, the number of people and weight it holds (kids or adults), and see if it’s stable at higher speeds. Can it be steered with a handle? Does it inflate easily and have a durable air valve? Avoid those marketed as high flying because even at slow speeds they can reach extreme heights and could cause injury. Check each time Check all tube parts for cracks and tears. Make sure the contact points for the handle and rope are secure. Inflate the towable at least one hour prior to using it. A loss in air can cause the tube to whip around and throw riders off, so carry a repair kit. Attach the tow rope to an approved transom towing system, never from a tower, and reduce water drag by attaching a booster ball. Afterward, clean the cover, deflate it and check for wear and tear. Wash the rope, air dry it, coil it and then pack everything in a dry location out of sunlight. Wear the right things Snug-fitting life jackets are mandatory for everyone, with high-performance neoprene ones offering the most comfort. Avoid or reduce finger injuries by wearing gloves, especially when handling rope or handles. Helmets are a good idea when there are multiple riders in a towable. It’s inevitable that riders will get tossed into the water. Even in the middle of summer, Great Lakes waters can be cold. Wear appropriate clothing while riding (a wetsuit, for example), and be prepared to treat hypothermia onboard.

Spotters and rider recovery A spotter is necessary to watch for submerged debris, other boats, the towable and people in the water. Establish a communication system using hand signals: thumbs up means to go faster, thumbs down to slow, and a fist to stop. It may be obvious, but “stop” means stop, and “enough” means enough. When riders are thrown off, the spotter notifies the driver. The driver immediately slows down and comes around on the starboard side so the driver can watch out for the person in the water. The driver should cut the engine and allow the rider to return to the towable or get onboard. Watch your speed First-time riders and young children should be pulled at a slower rate, no faster than 15 mph, and adults can be pulled at around 20 mph. Check your state laws. Start gradually with the towable inside the wake, then pick up speed to move the towable over the wake. Turning without slowing down moves the towable over the wake at a higher speed that can throw off the passengers or make it go airborne. Watch for a slack rope. Sudden acceleration will rip the tube forward causing whiplash, which can be dangerous for multiple riders. Serious back injuries can occur from bouncing too much or crossing wakes at high speeds, and sitting up increases the risk of striking the face on the knees. Head for open water and check your surroundings. Know your local water rules and respect posted signs and guidelines. Stay away from docks, piers, busy channels, marinas, boats and other towables. Sensibility reigns Alcohol and towables don’t mix for the rider or driver. If you can’t swim, stay off the towable, even if you’re wearing a life jacket. Lastly, never go over the maximum weight limit or number of people on the towable. The idea is to have fun on the water and minimize the possibility of accidents. The responsibility falls on the boat owner or driver’s shoulders, so err on the side of caution while tubing so that you can look forward to tubing another day. ★

Bay, you’ll find 400 of those hard workers hand-building 14 different models – each a sterling example of versatility and unrivaled quality. This is a significant step for a conservative boatbuilder quite satisfied with Volvo and Mercury sterndrives and IPS units. Cruisers Yachts has only turned out a cabin cruiser with outboards in 2018 and the very early 1950s, when the second generation of Thompsons (the company founders) started building wood lapstrake outboard cabin cruisers in Oconto.

However, the company recognizes that outboards are the power du jour. While triple Mercury 300s are standard, those looking for an extra boost can order this boat with triple Mercurys up to 450 hp. Either way, we were up on plane at 22 knots and clocked a thrilling 53 mph at wide open throttle: For a 38-foot cabin cruiser, that’s moving. Mercury joystick control is part of the standard package and takes the anxiety out of docking in any marina setting, at seawalls or in wetslips.

Brains and beauty

While the Mercury Verados are the headline feature for the 38 GLS, there are two other aesthetic design treats likely to steal your heart. One is a fold-out “beach door” starboard side aft that electronically deploys into a water-level replacement for the transom platform, now dedicated to engines. This nifty feature shifts the swimming, lounging and socializing center from traditional boat design. Aft seating swivels to face this “beach,” allowing parents to keep an eye on little ones in the water. The second feature is the full bar, complete with swivel stools that complement an outdoor kitchen 32

with grill, sink, refrigerator and ice maker. Positioned port side, opposite the helm, this layout begs for days anchored up at the sandbar – or for having another couple over for “docktails” in the marina. Mercury’s racy, low profile restyling of the engine’s cowling angles carries the eye right into the cockpit of the boat. Adjustable aft seating is high enough to look over and past the engines or to swivel to starboard when the “beach” option is deployed. Or, simply move the backrests to allow for forward seating as a bench seat in the cockpit. Versatile indeed! Before the term social distancing entered our vocabulary, I always thought bow seating was an obligatory use of space, created for teenagers who wanted space from their parental units. Cruisers wisely took a page out of living room design to create a welcoming den, complete with Rockford Fosgate speakers, multiple cup holders and a removable teak table. Sunpad, nap zone or social zone, it’s your choice. With exquisite cushion stitching and a no-nonsense eye for color blocking design in the vinyl, this area is way too inviting to even consider keeping your distance from the ones you love. One trend all boatbuilders are noticing is the return to overnighting on boats. Cruisers never

moved production away, perhaps influenced by their proximity to Door County and other spectacular Great Lakes destinations. The 38 GLS is an ideal boat for weekends or summer vacations – even for you tall fellows. With 6' 5" of headroom throughout the cabin and a nearly queen-size berth in an aft stateroom, there is ample room to move around. The lower salon performs double duty as a U-shaped dinette that converts into a berth, and an enclosed head features a hot and cold freshwater shower. Ask your dealer about the optional 5.5 kW generator to power the cabin’s air and heat, along with the salon microwave, fridge and optional TV. Ideal for a family of four or empty nesters, this is a very complete package.

So, what if you really don’t want outboards? You’re in luck. This same layout is available with sterndrive power, with a few notable differences. I may have opted for larger screens to take full advantage of the real estate available and to make it easier for older captains like myself to see the myriad of information that once required dozens of analog gauges. The arrangement of screens and blend of pushbutton accessory controls is neatly spaced. One thoughtful touch is the wireless phone charging pad at the helm. Underneath the bolster helm chair is storage for an optional ice maker. The stainless door is accessed in the companionway and does not interfere or distract the skipper. It also is within arm’s reach of the bar and those two swivel bar chairs, so an “A+” to the ergonomics designer at Cruisers Yachts. hat if you want a yacht around 59-feet with pod drives, a flybridge and comfortable social areas? What if you want the same boat to have a private entrance to the master stateroom, guest stateroom sleeping options and maybe a sunroof over the salon? Add a side deck door, 360-degree

panoramic views from the salon and a top speed of 29 knots to your wish list. “Impossible!” You might think. Well, think again. Prestige Yachts has done its homework and recently introduced the 590S. Prestige packs in the features and options so you can get what you want and more.

It starts above

With an eye toward creating comfortable “island” areas, the Prestige 590S starts at the top, as in the flybridge deck. The center helm station is fitted with dual Raymarine 12-inch multifunction displays, joystick, thruster controls and electric steering. Prestige designers also added a venturi windscreen and created an indentation for added legroom. The 590S has a large helm seat so guests can chat with the captain. There’s also a huge (yes, it really is) sunpad for multiple guests. Grabrails all around the boat make you feel secure if seated or standing. Designed in partnership with Garroni Design Studios and JP Concepts, Prestige has kept the lines of the 590S streamlined yet proportional — not an easy task. One thoughtful feature is having the flybridge deck extend aft over the cockpit (you can add a sunshade for full coverage), which allows the sunpad and helm to be set back. This was needed, as there is a sunroof forward of the helm that allows for ambient light and airflow through the main level. It’s not often you see a flybridge and sunroof combination, but the brains at Prestige figured it out and made it work. There are skylights with built-in shades in the sunroof, so even when not opened there’s lighting. Bring it in

For a smooth transition from the aft deck to the interior space, the 590S keeps it on one level. Relax on the L-shaped transom bench seat with thickly padded cushions. Gather the group around the doublefolding teak table or add in a few chairs for a casual al fresco dining experience. Fold up the end leafs for a sturdy stainless frame that has drink holders and can be used as a grabrail. Opt for the transom sunpad seating that converts this seat to another large lounging location. Inside, the layout is logical and open. When the aft bulkhead window is raised and the sliding door fully retracted, the main level becomes one with the boat. Aft to port is the galley with island and bar. Full meals can be prepped thanks to the well-fitted appliances, which include a Vitrifrigo full-sized fridge/freezer, a

Siemens three burner induction cooktop, Miele microwave oven and more. The stainless sink has a split marble cover with dedicated storage slots. There’s overhead and under-counter storage cabinets, including one dedicated to the china with presets/precuts for each plate and cup. Up one step is the midship salon. It will quickly become the choice leisure space onboard. Prestige incorporates several concepts to maximize the enjoyment factor. Carried through the main level is 6-feet 6-inches of headroom. That does not diminish when you make the step up from the galley as the tray ceiling accommodates the change in height. The port U-shaped settee is comfortable for casual lounging and works well as the interior dining area. A wood table folds out from the ends, creating ample space for meals. To starboard is a bench seat and L-settee that are split for a good reason. Here is the access for the starboard side deck door. This allows guests or the captain to transit to the foredeck or to handle a line much easier than having to walk all the way aft. In conjunction with a port sliding window and the sunroof, it also allows for great cross-ventilation on those glorious weather days.

Just ahead to starboard is the lower helm. With electronics similar to the flybridge work area, it also has an adjustable double helm seat, low profile console and two large windshields. Furnishings are low profile, so the extra-large side windows can offer commanding views, flood in ambient lighting and give the captain and guests 360-degree visibility. Even on those not-so-nice days, relaxing in the salon can still be a great experience. Privacy please

You want a private master suite? You got it. Aft to starboard is a dedicated staircase to the lower master, a destination in itself. It has a center double berth, nightstands, sconce lighting/reading lamps and hull-side windows with opening ports. It also has a vanity desk on the port side that doubles as a work area or casual desktop. With opposing cushioned seats, this is a nice hideaway for morning coffee or reading a book. Forward is a walk-in closet to port and ensuite head to starboard with a centerline shower. These rooms act as a buffer from the forward sleeping areas. This is no dungeon, as Prestige carries the 6-feet 6-inches of headroom to the lower level.

There’s access to the forward and port guest staterooms from a staircase next to the helm. The VIP has a great feature: The center double berth can separate into a V-berth configuration, adding flexibility. An ensuite head with shower doubles as the day head via a second door. There’s a VIP walk-in closet that can be ordered as a head for the port stateroom, which has twin berths. There is a crew quarters in the aft area and if not needed, this space can become a tender garage. With full walk-around decks, transiting fore and aft is easy. Up front is a sunpad that measures 6-feet by 7-feet, large for a bow setup. Add in the four-post sun awning for protection. Vroom, vroom!

Making this all possible is a pair of Cummins QSC 8.3 600-hp diesel engines coupled to ZEUS pod drives for exceptional handling. Gently motor along at 10 knots, burning approximately 11 gph, or cruise at 23 knots, consuming 48 gph. Wide open will get the 590S up to 29 knots. Prestige Yachts has deftly figured out how to deliver more based on wants. Now go and get your own. H

herd of Sea-Doo personal watercraft (PWC) bobbed at the Lakeway Marina dock, begging us to climb aboard for a day adventure on Texas’ Lake Travis. All I could think about, however, was a long-ago misfire with a Harley-Davidson Sportster — an occasion that proved I’m one of those people who shouldn’t give my hands and feet different jobs. Don’t get me wrong, I love the water. I spent my childhood powerboating on Lake Michigan, and I fell deeply in love with sailing as an adult. But this PWC business — I wasn’t sure it was going to be my thing.

Along with a sizable cohort of media colleagues, I’d arrived in Austin, Texas to spend a late-summer day with the Sea-Doo team at the Lakeway Resort & Spa learning about the 2020 model lineup and taking the watercraft for a spin. Despite 25 years in marine journalism and the better part of five decades in boating, I felt like a newbie. Turns out, I’m not alone. Sea-Doo created the “Rec Lite” PWC category in 2014 with its affordable, compact, fuel-efficient and lightweight 60- to 90-hp Spark model, which most sedans can tow. These days, the Rec Lite category comprises 30% of the North American PWC industry, and 60-65% of Rec Lite riders are newbies. With the Spark, Sea-Doo also launched its new scratch- and impact-resistant Polytec hull material. It’s both robust and easy to repair. According to James Heintz, BRP Marine Group’s director of global product management, its impact resistance is as good as fiberglass. It might even be better, as PWCs are vulnerable to damage from underwater debris, beaching, docking and collision. “This is our ‘no worries’ hull material,” Heintz says. “The beauty of Polytec is that it can be replaced. It also delivers in terms of hydrodynamics and fuel. There’s a bit more drag, but only experienced, high-performance customers would feel the difference.” 38

These high-performance enthusiasts make up a solid chunk of the PWC industry, with 22% into touring and 17% into serious performance. Heintz notes that Rec Lite’s big sister, the Recreation category, remains strong at 30% of the industry. In fact, the number of recreational customers is growing, so I was eager to see Sea-Doo’s new recreational GTI platform. At the low end, you have the GTI with 90- and 130-hp engines. At the high end, you have the GTI SE with 130- and 170-hp engines. These are natural upgrades for the Spark rider who is ready for something new and more powerful. The GTI and GTI SE, along with the rest of the 2020 Sea-Doo lineup, features Rotax ACE, or advanced combustion efficiency engines. As we walked down the steep, winding road to the marina, I planned to see if a Spark was available. Instead, I was cheerfully steered toward a GTR 230. Complete with a supercharged 230-hp Rotax ACE engine, it also boasts a new hull design that’s 30 to 40 pounds lighter for maximum performance. I clambered aboard, half expecting the machine to roll and dump me unceremoniously over the side. However, these PWC are approximately 40

1-inch wider and 30% more stable than their closest competitors, according to Heintz, and they offer a lower center of gravity. My stable steed barely shimmied beneath me. Gritting my teeth, I fired up the engine and prepared for launch. However, Sea-Doo’s Intelligent Throttle Control technology allows these PWC to start in neutral. The technology also has activity-specific modes to accommodate different riding preferences. We slowly reversed out of our holding pen, spun around and motored for open water. With the marina safely behind us, my cohort immediately gunned it. Well, most of the cohort. I practiced throttling up and easing off, time and again. I maneuvered through several S-turns and a few increasingly thrilling donuts. I felt the GTR’s stability, and I appreciated how I could hug it with my knees. As I reached my companions at Mansfield Dam Park, I noted the easy tracking as the GTR held its course, the softness as it charged across the zig-zagging wakes, the responsive trim system for the jet nozzle and the bullet-like acceleration when I was brave enough to switch on Sport Mode. Okay, this was fun.

I learned something else that day in Texas. These machines offer so much more than performance, entry-level or otherwise. It’s not just about the donuts.

“We’re redefining the watercraft experience by enhancing the limited time people have to spend on the water,” Heintz says. “We’re bringing features and benefits to customers who appreciate an unbeatable value.” What does that mean, exactly? It means that Sea-Doo has some really cool add-ons, like its ingenious LinQ attachment system. “It started on Ski-Doo snowmobiles, so riders could carry essential gear,” Heintz explains. “We have a standard, 16-inch, center-to-center latch system for plug and play — or clip and cruise! You swap out the accessories you want.” The LinQ catalog has more than 40 accessories, including a cooler, retractable ski pylon, watertight bag, fuel caddy, quick-attach rod holder and storage bin. As Heintz says, LinQ is like an app store for PWC life. I was also impressed to learn about the 44 liters of water-resistant storage and the fully watertight phone storage in the glovebox with available USB port. Heintz says the company even added heated grips for 2020. “There are more than 50 million registered fishermen in the United States, and Sea-Doo has the only dedicated fish model in the PWC industry,” he says. “Fishermen really appreciate those heated grips because a drysuit doesn’t cover your hands.” After capturing a few images at the dam, I tossed my iPhone and baseball cap back into the watertight glovebox compartment, and

we screamed down the lake to our next stop: Lake Travis Zipline Adventures, right on the waterfront. Motoring toward the dock, I was grateful for Sea-Doo’s Intelligent Brake and Reverse, which is the world’s only on-water braking system. With just the squeeze of a lever, I ghosted into our slip and came to a stop. TripAdvisor calls Lake Travis Zipline Adventures the “Best Adventure in Austin,” with 1 mile of zips in five lines. The last three are the longest and fastest in Texas. My heart thumped unhelpfully as we hiked up, as I straightened my helmet, as the attendant clipped in my harness and as I stepped off each platform into thin air. There’s nothing quite like launching yourself off a 20-story cliff and soaring for 2,800 feet across the treetops and sparkling water. All too soon, we were on the ground again, eating steaming hot burritos with fresh chili, queso and jalapeños. Plus, hot sauce. Viva Texas. At the dock, the team steered me to the GTE SE so I could give it a try on the way back to the marina. The sky purpled with an impending storm and the wind showed its teeth, but the watercraft handled the chop with ease. Just off Lakeway, we cut our engines and drifted for a while. I lay back on the GTE SE’s seat and stretched out my legs on the large, flat swim platform. We heard an ominous rumble: The day was over. We fired up our engines and headed for the marina — after a few extra donuts, of course. H

ur dream of sailing off on the Great Loop began with a rather simple question: “If not now, then when?” We’re just a young couple in our thirties from Northern Michigan who share a passion for travel and a love of the water. Growing up in Michigan, both Charlie and I were raised within minutes of some of the most beautiful bodies of freshwater and by parents who passed down their joy and respect for the water to their kids. As we look around at our life right now, we can’t thank them enough for that. After traveling out west in a small SUV and living out of a tent (a true test of how well we and our 2-year-old golden retriever, Dudley, could endure confined spaces together), we decided to take our travels off of the dry land and onto the water. We lusted for a more liberated way of life. We know firsthand how short life can be and we didn’t want to wait for retirement to take our trip of a lifetime. We are young, healthy and able, so again we asked ourselves, “If not now, then when?” So, after telling our families, quitting our jobs, breaking our lease and moving out of our rental, selling almost all of our furniture and putting the rest of our belongings in storage, we moved the very few items we could take with us onto our new home, Resolute.

Resolute means admirably purposeful, determined, steadfast and unwavering. So what made this the perfect Great Loop boat for us? Well, Grand Banks are known for their beauty but also their venerable practicality. They are sea-kindly, safe and will never have you doubting their ability to get through even the worst conditions. In our opinion, it’s the ideal boat for cruising at a leisurely pace and really taking in all the beauty that is America. We joked our entire trip because you just can’t be in a rush onboard a trawler and that’s exactly what we wanted. To slow down. To simplify. We also didn’t want to break the bank on our voyage. So with its single 120-hp diesel engine and stately cruising speed in the 8-knot range, we were able to keep the fuel consumption relatively low. Also, since the length overall is 32 feet, this makes it more cost-friendly at marinas, especially when you’re paying by the foot. Comfort and livability were also a huge component. There is ample counter and storage space (a major bonus!), a deep stainless steel sink,

fridge, oven, microwave and countertop. The 12-gallon water heater and holding tank make anchoring out for days at a time a breeze. Below is a V-berth in the private stateroom, and a head with a handheld shower, toilet and sink. Above, the flybridge seats six adults, which provides the perfect space for cocktails with guests that you meet along the way. There’s also a mast set on a hinged bracket, which makes lowering and raising the mast easy, especially for those low bridge clearances on the Illinois River. We also love the wide side decks, which make getting around the boat uncommonly easy and secure with a tall rail. The large side windows allow for beautiful panoramic views of the entire journey from the salon. Of course, everyone will have their own list of necessities for their own Great Loop boat; however, this boat checks most of our boxes and is overall our perfect Great Loop vessel.

Cruising the Midwest river system and Florida’s Panhandle

Resolute’s homeport is Boyne City, Michigan, on beautiful Lake Charlevoix. We began our trip southbound on Lake Michigan, on October 4, 2019. Charlie and I were excited to hit peak fall colors throughout our entire trip down and I was personally eager to begin the Loop going through one of the most industrial parts of our country; however, I had no idea what to expect. I’ve always heard that this part isn’t everyone’s favorite and ends up getting rushed through. After personal experience though, I believe that this part of the loop is so overlooked. It’s the part that makes you proud of your country. The quiet, solitude of anchoring out on the peaceful rivers at night and the abundance of bald eagles soaring overhead gives you such peace. Watching the hustle and bustle of barges and tows coming and going north and southbound and American flags flying high brings you such pride. The kindness and selflessness of the marina workers going above and beyond for you and your boat, staying past their shifts to help you tie up after dark or offering their personal vehicle to take to the local grocery store to provision left my heart so full. You won’t find better fried catfish or sweet tea. And it gives you a glimpse into what it must have been like for Native Americans, fishermen, military, traders, trappers and loggers who traveled those waters as they created the foundation of our country. This is the true heartland of America.

We experienced firsthand how powerful the Mississippi is with its extreme current and whirlpools. We embraced the solitude and quiet with no cell phone service. We witnessed the devastation of flooding and tornadoes just weeks prior. We admired nature’s beauty and the change of species and climates. We experienced record low temperatures and dealt with unfreezing our lines from the cleats in the morning. We realized the importance of radar, GPS, AIS and what a good VHF radio can do. We dodged crab pots, hit our fair share of debris and navigated around underwater buoys being pulled out of sight by the current. We dealt with shredded belts and an overheated engine. We learned more about Asian carp and drove through electric fish barriers. We tested our limits and practiced patience and respect for the water. We made 34 stops in 47 days. We traveled through eight states on eight-plus different major waterways. We docked up at 18 marinas, tied up to five walls, anchored out at nine anchorages and locked through 22 locks. We made one overnight Gulf crossing and traveled approximately 2,500 nautical miles. And we’d do it all again.

A lot of people have asked, “What is it like boating with a dog?” and, with all honesty, it’s one of the best parts of this entire adventure. My love for dogs is probably a bit on the extreme side since I work in veterinary medicine, but it’s truly amazing watching them adapt to different surroundings and learn new things. For instance, Dudley learning how to use the turf “Potty Patch” in the cockpit at mile 1,500 on our trip was a definitely a proud mama moment! As was watching his confidence jumping on and off the boat from the dock during high tide and low tide; watching him learn where he’s allowed to go on the boat and where he’s not; and watching him experience dolphins for the first time. Dudley is a 2-year-old golden retriever who loves the water, other dogs, humans, napping, retrieving toys and food — all the food. I raised Dudley basically in the back of my car. Wherever I went, he went. He was never left at home if I could help it. He traveled the U.S. with us, camping in tents, sleeping in cars, swimming in rivers, lakes and ponds, climbing mountains and basically just adapting to whatever adventure we threw at him.

So it was no different when he first stepped foot on the boat. He was like, “where to next?” Careful planning is essential though, and we did not overlook the little things when it came to Dudley coming with us. We knew that boating wasn’t for every dog and we weren’t going to throw Dudley into a situation that made him stressed for days on end or could potentially make him sick. Safety was our first big consideration. You hear so many harrowing tales about dogs onboard and the things that could go wrong. The first thing we purchased was a Ruffwear Float Coat life jacket. Even though we know he’s a good swimmer, we also know that accidents happen. Next to safety comes comfort. We wanted to make sure Dudley was used to the smell and sound of the engine, the confined space, and the vibrations and movement of the boat, so we took him on a couple mini trips before the big voyage. We also made sure he had his own space on the boat and that included the entire portside couch. He knows this is his space while we are underway in rough waters. Working in veterinary medicine, I also made sure we had all the precautionary medications and supplies onboard in case of an emergency: Anti-nausea medication, anti-anxiety medications, pain medications, antibiotics, telfa, gauze, triple antibiotic ointment, hydrogen peroxide, etc. We also had a laminated chart of all of his vaccine records, Rabies certificate, microchip number and anything else veterinarians might need, especially traveling between state lines and even internationally. Everyone’s experience is different and every dog is different; however, for us, traveling the Great Loop with Dudley was one of the best decisions we made. If Dudley could speak, I think he would agree. Pets definitely don’t need to be the anchors to our life dreams. When properly prepared, they can add so much joy to your cruising adventure.

What’s next?

It’s been eight months since we’ve untied the dock lines from our land-dwelling life. And thus far, we haven’t regretted a single minute. We have no idea what the future holds for us (and fellow Loopers during this pandemic), but as boating has taught us, we’re learning to go with the flow. We’re just a young couple who stopped waiting for “someday” and turned it into “right now” — and we haven’t looked back. ★

sawmills, shipbuilding and taverns fueled the local economy of three In e early 1800s, Michigan villages dotting the banks of Kalamazoo Lake and the Kalamazoo River

as it flows into Lake Michigan. Just a few miles apart, Saugatuck, Douglas (a combination of two hamlets named Dudleyville and Dutcher) and Singapore harvested the dense forests surrounding them, built ships and transported lumber. The peak of the tri-cities was during the 1871 Chicago Fire, when Michigan’s woodlands helped rebuild that great city. But it came at a cost. Totally denuded of trees, their main economy went bust. For Saugatuck and Douglas to the south, it meant a decline in prosperity that continued until the turn of the last century, when steamships and railroads transported vacationers from Chicago and Milwaukee, eager to escape summers in the city. For Singapore, farther north and closest to Lake Michigan, the result was much more dire. Founded in 1831, Singapore was a bustling sort of place with a one-time population around 200, complete with a school, public hall, general store, boarding house, 25 to 40 houses and a wildcat bank that printed its own money. Monetarily, I guess, things were a little looser back then.

It might have been profitable to chop down all those trees, but ecologically it was a loser. Without the barrier of forests, Singapore ultimately disappeared under drifting sands. For a while, the peaks of buildings could sometimes be spotted in sand dunes until they, too, were finally covered. The village’s demise earned it the rather romantic name of Lost Singapore, as well as comparisons to Pompeii. But traces of Singapore still exist. Before the village was completely lost, the bank and at least three homes were put on skids and pulled down the frozen Kalamazoo River to Saugatuck. Two homes remain and are private residences. The 183-year-old bank building became a general store, moved again in 1890, and is now the Singapore Bank Bookstore and Saugatuck Art Gallery. But as far as we know, it stopped printing money a long time ago.

On the water

At the intersection of Mary and Water streets in Saugatuck, hop aboard the Saugatuck Chain Ferry, which dates back to 1838 and is the only remaining chain-driven ferry in the U.S. The ferry is operated by a hand crank that activates the pulleys for the short ride across the Kalamazoo River. Take off-road biking in a different direction. Saugatuck HydroBikes rents water bikes — a combination of pontoons and pedaling mechanics once known as velocipedes.

For a stylish way to travel the waterfront, go vintage with Retro Boat Rentals — sleek, candycolored fiberglass jet age runabouts (think fins and silver chrome accents), which were popular from 1958 to 1963. For large groups up to 10, consider one of their bright orange donut boats. Complete with a round table in the center, these donut boats are an option for on-thewater picnics. Board one of Harbor Duck Adventure Tours’ refurbished World War II duck boats for a ramble through the streets of Saugatuck and Douglas before plowing into the waters of Saugatuck Harbor. Jump off at any time while on land, grab lunch, do some shopping and then catch another boat later. Big Lake Outfitters offers a myriad of water equipment — think 18- and 24-foot pontoons, paddleboards and kayaks. For landlubbers, they also have bike rentals. Making Waves has pontoons, boats and jet skis for rent. Choose from a variety of waterway trips offered by Running Rivers Kayak. Starting at Wade’s Bayou in downtown Douglas, choices include a onehour wetland paddle, two or three hours through wetland and forest and, if you’re really fit, a sixhour forest run. Take a hike — if you’re brave enough — up Mt. Baldhead, a 302-foot steep climb that pays off by controlling those calories (after all, you did eat that fried chicken at The Southerner, didn’t you?) and in the spectacular views of Lake Michigan.

paddleboats, up the Kalamazoo River to Kalamazoo Lake and back to Lake Michigan. The trip takes 90 minutes. Star of Saugatuck also hosts pirate, Halloween and wine-themed cruises. Set sail on Sailing Saugatuck’s tall ship Serenity on one of its two-hour daily cruises. For special occasions or work outings, you can also privately charter the schooner (up to 24 passengers) along Saugatuck’s waterfront and out to Lake Michigan.

On shore

Of course, you could spend all your time on the water, but Saugatuck — with its enchanting shops, restaurants, wine tasting rooms, coffee bars, live music, plays and art galleries — beckons. The lake effect from Lake Michigan creates a lush growing area. The result is a bounty of local farms, vineyards and orchards. Two shops, side-by-side on Butler Street, have corralled the flavors of the region into delicious food products. Before there was farm-to-table, there was Justin Rashid, avatar of local, foraged and handcrafted, who founded American Spoon, a paean to artisanal Michigan foods, almost 40 years ago. The American Spoon in Saugatuck features an extra bonus: A gelato shop. Wines made from cherries, blueberries and raspberries, picked at the peak of ripeness, are among the specialties of Fenn Valley Vineyards, a small hamlet about 10 miles away. Samplings of these wines, as well as its reds and whites, are available at its Saugatuck

tasting room. Just down the street, Tabor Hill Winery also has a tasting room. At Good Goods, a two-story gallery featuring the works of over 140 artists, look for highquality crafts, furnishings, sculptures, ceramics, paintings, woodworks, yardbirds, functional and sculptural handcrafted glass, jewelry, bags, among other items.

Eat

A few years back, James Beard Award nominee Mark Miller opened The Southerner on the Kalamazoo River, a homage to the food he grew up eating. Call it Appalachian by way of Detroit cuisine. Using long-cherished family recipes and local ingredients, specialties include his fried chicken soaked overnight in buttermilk. Other southern-style specialties include shrimp and grits, pimento cheese and goat cheese topped with slow-cooked red pepper jelly. The latter two are accompanied with saltines. Forget the diet and spread an extra thick layer of honey butter on piping hot laminated biscuits (and yes, you’ll want to order extra). All this wonderfulness comes with free river views in a retro ambience that’s both comfy and downhome. Uncommon Grounds Roaster Cafe — located in a charming cottage accented by masses of colorful blooms and outdoor tables topped by bright red umbrellas — takes its coffee as seriously as oenophiles take their wine. It sources freshly picked single-source beans

HARVEST TIME The rolling hills surrounding both Douglas and Saugatuck are dotted with orchards and farms. From mid-summer and well into the fall there’s plenty of farm stands and places to pick your own. Depending on the growing season, fill a basket of sweet cherries or red raspberries; pick a peck of apples; choose the biggest pumpkins — all to take home with you.

Rest your head in style

Wickwood Inn, a 1940s Colonial Revival-style home just steps from the downtown, now houses a bed and breakfast that’s highly rated. Owned and operated by Julee Rosso, cofounder of the Silver Palate line of foods and also the coauthor of the Silver Palate cookbooks, the place is a delight for both culinarians and those just wanting a little luxury at the end of their day. Want palatial accommodations? Built in 1912 by an associate of Frank Lloyd Wright, the Belvedere Inn and Restaurant was once the summer home of a wealthy Chicagoan. Set on five acres of lushly landscaped lawn, it’s now a richly furnished bed and breakfast with an on-site restaurant located two miles from downtown.

Beach it

The only problem with the area’s golden beaches is trying to decide which one to hit first. Oval Beach — named by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the Top 25 beaches in the world and National Geographic Traveler’s Top Freshwater Beaches in the USA — is open year round. Douglas Beach is a small neighborhood beach just south of Oval snuggled between summer homes.

The 40-minute ride winds passengers through the area’s forest and sand dunes, stopping at certain points to offer historical insight on the area, including when crossing over the buried town of Singapore.

Cross over the bridge into Douglas

Just off of Blue Star Highway, Douglas’s Center Street, a wonderful mix of pre- and post-Civil War Greek Revival, Italianate, Arts & Crafts, Victorian and Colonial Revival, runs for eight or so blocks before ending in a small park fronting Wade’s Bayou. Built in 1866, the Old School House, one of the country’s oldest surviving multi-classroom school buildings and among the finest examples of 19th century school architecture in America, is now the Douglas-Saugatuck History Center. Intriguing both indoors and out, it features exhibits and multiple garden areas, including the Life Boat Exhibit & Back-in-Time Garden. If you like peanut butter, order a glass of the Peanut Butter Porter at the Saugatuck Brewing Company. Stop by for free tours with samples every Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

Those that might worry about being near the hubbub of the docks all summer will appreciate the included empty lot next door and the low maintenance backyard, which features a small pond and waterfall, firepit and flowers. “I hope that whoever decides to purchase this house can enjoy it as much as we have,” Loder says. Two locations mean double the fun and history.

arlene Wiser has been harbormaster at Beaver Island Municipal Marina for three years, but she has known the area all her life. So has her family — she’s the fifth generation to live on the small, Lake Michigan island northwest of Charlevoix. “Since our family property is on the harbor, I spend most of my time in it, on it or watching it,” Wiser says. However, Wiser and her family aren’t the only ones with deep roots on Beaver Island and with Beaver Island Marina. For the past 20 years, three generations of the Anderson family have operated Beaver Island Marina. That changed in October 2019, when the Andersons sold the marina to the JA Woollam Foundation, which then gifted it to St. James Township. Now run as a municipal dock, Beaver Island Marina is expected to be open for the 2020 season, complete with renovations. The township has also added its original municipal marina to the mix, calling it “Marina

North” while the original Beaver Island Marina is now called “Marina South.” With two locations to dock (each marina has 23 transient slips that can be reserved online through the Michigan DNR), there’s ample reason to take advantage of what local families have been enjoying for years. “Boaters can tour the island by bicycle or rent a car to circle the island in an afternoon,” Wiser says. “Because of our location in the middle of northern Lake Michigan, Beaver Island is one of the finest dark skies stargazing locations in the United States.” Boaters can also experience the historic stories of the island’s people and buildings, which Wiser describes as “humorous [and] often heroic.” For example, what used to be the Beaver Island Lumber Company is now the marina office. “Time slows down here, offering a peaceful, relaxed way of life,” she says. “This harbor is my home and my favorite place in the world.” H

In the early 1930s, the owners of Stroh Brewery commissioned well-respected naval architect Ned Purdy to design a fast and stylish express commuter. However, the Stroh family decided not to have it built and the design was put aside for 40 years. In 1974, the Stroh family decided to have the cruiser built, but the Purdy Boat Company had long since closed its doors. Instead, they commissioned the Staudacher Yacht Company to build their magnificent cruiser as it had been planned four decades earlier. Staudacher, located in Michigan, used modern construction techniques while remaining faithful to the original design, creating a modern version of a classic 1930s Purdy design. This beautifully designed commuter, named Zipper, was donated to the Antique Boat Museum in 1985 by the Stroh family. It has become the flagship of the museum’s in-water fleet. Every season, Zipper provides speedy cruises for hundreds of delighted passengers, gliding effortlessly through the water to a wide range of destinations. As a Subchapter T boat under U.S. Coast Guard regulations, the Zipper can carry a maximum of 17 passengers and requires a captain with a 25 GRT Masters upgrade to their Merchant Mariners Credential and Marine Radio Operators Permit.
