A Look Back Reﬂecting on Lakeland Boating’s 2016 highlights.

s we near the end of 2016, we reflect back not only on the seven decades Lakeland Boating has been in publication, but also the past year of accomplishments. This year, we took readers to Ontario’s wine country of Prince Edward County; to the surfing town of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; to the pristine landscapes of Michigan’s Elk River Chain of Lakes Watershed; even on a transatlantic voyage to Cuba, Portugal and Senegal (p. 46). We tested the newest boat models on the market, from the luxurious Grand Banks 44 Eastbay to the sporty Sea Ray 310 SLX and the stunning new Tiara C53 Coupe (p. 24). We have strived to provide informative, quality content, which readers would share with their friends, saying, “You’ve got to read this!” We profiled legendary Great Lakes companies, from Walstrom Marine to Carver Yachts, Irish Boat Shop and December 1956 Issue of Lakeland Yachting Smoker Craft Inc. We rounded up the tastiest Great Lakes breweries; coolest small boats; alluring inland lakes; and thrilling winter activities to partake in during snowy months (p. 28). World Champion professional triathlete Amanda Stevens and 2000 Olympian Freestyle bronze medalist Chris Thompson churned through the turbulent waters of the Straits of Mackinac on Labor Day to reign as the 2016 gold medalists of the Mighty Mac Swim. Stevens and Thompson led the male and Silver medalist Alec Mull, gold medalist Chris female divisions of a pack of 34 swimmers who Thompson and gold medalist Amanda Stevens. attempted the crossing between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas alongside the landmark Mackinac Bridge. Michigan Boating Community Loses Dedicated Member In mid-September, the Great Lakes boating community lost David Giffin. He passed away at his home in Bay Harbor, Michigan at the age of 71. Giffin was involved in the boating world in a number of influential ways. He owned and operated Grand Isle Marina in Grand Haven, Michigan for 24 years. He also served as commissioner of the Michigan State Waterways Commission for nine years, and as chairman for six. During his tenure, Giffin led the development of marinas at Mackinac Island, St. Ignace and Traverse City. He also served on the Bay Harbor Yacht Club Board of Directors and was chairman of the finance committee. Giffin is survived by his wife, Diane, four children and seven grandchildren.

Great Lakes Grand Prix A 38-foot Skater catamaran sponsored by Performance Boat Center and powered by a pair of 750-hp Sterling engines claimed first place in the Superboat class at the Super Boat International (SBI)-sanctioned “8th Annual Great Lakes Grand Prix” offshore race in Michigan City, Indiana on August 4-7, 2016. The team of Myrick Coil, from Osage Beach, Missouri, and John Tomlinson from North Miami, Florida, had a winning average speed of 100.34 mph. They covered the 19-lap, 4.2-mile race course on Lake Michigan in 47 minutes. —Paul Kemiel

Dave Lyle Retires from Walstrom Marine

Michigan native, Michigan State University graduate, longtime Walstrom Marine employee and avid boater, Dave Lyle, will be retiring effective 2017 after 35 years at Walstrom. His deep-rooted love for the water shows throughout his successful career. In 1971, Lyle took a sabbatical his junior year of college. He borrowed a 28-foot Pearson Triton sailboat, named Cameo, which he sailed around the world for a year — from South Haven, Michigan, to New Orleans and the Bahamas, up the Hudson River, to Harbor Springs and then back to South Haven. Lyle later spent time working on Great Lakes ore boats and captaining a Lake Superior ferry boat, Salty container ships, Gulf of Mexico oil rig supply boats and Mackinac race boats. He eventually moved back to Michigan and bought a J-30 sailboat in Holland, Michigan and decided to sail to the Bahamas. In August of 1981, he took a pit stop in Harbor Springs to see his old college roommate and fraternity brother, Ward Walstrom. Lyle tied up his sailboat at Walstrom Marine and never left. He started helping Walstrom haul and launch boats, paint bottoms, and deliver and sell boats; 35 years later, Lyle is still in Harbor Springs. Lyle became sales manager, was promoted to general manager in 1991, and then became president of Walstrom Marine in 2001.

Antelope Shipwreck Found Near Apostle Islands

The ﬁnal segment of a 140-mile trail from Charlevoix, through Mackinac City and down to Alpena is now complete, making it possible for ambitious bikers to ride from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron. The ﬁnal segment to complete the trail is the North Western State Trail (NWST), a 32-mile stretch from Alanson to Mackinaw City. The path is composed of crushed and compacted limestone, which is perfect for equestrians, bikers, joggers and snowmobilers during the winter. Otherwise, motorized use is prohibited. The completion of the NWST wraps up almost 30 years of trail improvement and creation by the Top of Michigan Trails Council, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Department of Transportation and local governments. A group of shipwreck hunters have discovered the remains of the Antelope, a 187-foot schooner-barge that sank on October 7, 1897. The group calls the Antelope wreck one of the most intact sail-rigged ships found in Lake Superior, with two of three masts still standing, full rigging and the bow cabin intact. The Antelope was built in 1861, and carried passengers and freight between Chicago and Buffalo, New York. After catching fire in 1867, the ship was rebuilt and worked as a steamer. In 1897, the Antelope was being towed at a fast pace through choppy waters when it sprang a leak and eventually sank near Michigan Island. The crew escaped unharmed.

Nix the Noise How to soundproof your boat for a nice, quiet ride.

oats are great for relaxing and enjoying time with family and friends while on the water. Relaxing can be difficult, however, when you have to scream over engine and generator noise during conversations, or while lying awake at night listening to the melodious hum of an air conditioning unit. Installation of soundproofing can make a huge difference in onboard noise reduction. Here’s how to help transform the hullabaloo of your boat into a peaceful and tranquil floating Zen garden. Quiet, please! The best way to combat noise is by containing it at the source — within an engine compartment, for example. Installation of a high-quality, foam, soundproofing barrier can reduce engine noise by 10-35 decibels (about 65 percent). Soundproofing material is available in a wide variety of forms, from sprays and paints to foil-backed foam panels. Foam panels are a popular choice and are very effective against noise pollution. Self-adhesive panels are easy to install (simply peel and stick), but you have to plan and position them exactly where you want them the first try; you typically can’t The best strategy to address noise

Read all instructions (soundprooﬁng, adhesives, etc.) before starting your project.

Handle soundprooﬁng material carefully; avoid folding the material back on itself, which results in creasing.

Make templates to check ﬁt prior to cutting panels. Be sure to allow for material thickness at corners.

Ensure there’s adequate ventilation while installing and keep insulation material above bilge water levels (avoid exposure to any wet areas).

Seal all exposed edges with seam tape to prevent water or other contaminates (fumes, oil, etc.) from entering and degrading soundprooﬁng material. Seam tape can also be used to provide chafe protection at wear points.

Provide a minimum clearance of 6 inches between soundprooﬁng and engine or generator exhaust manifolds.

Use sharp tools when cutting soundprooﬁng, both to produce clean cuts and to avoid tearing of reﬂective foil. The foil or silver side should face upwards when cutting.

Don’t rely on adhesives alone; use fasteners where appropriate (all overhead and vertical surfaces) for backup in the event of adhesive failure.

Apply adhesive and install one panel at a time. Install the top panel ﬁrst so that adjacent vertical panels provide support to the outer edges of the top panel.

reposition them once in place without damaging the foam. Non-adhesivebacked panels require spray or brush-on contact adhesives. Most allow a bit of last minute repositioning, making them easier to work with in tight spaces. Regardless of the adhesives used, panels also require mechanical fasteners (such as screws and fender washers) particularly for overhead horizontal installations. To prevent gripping and tearing of the foam, wax the screws by running them into a candle prior to use.

Sound flows like water Soundproofing panels can be cut to shape with a box cutter or razor knife; however, a serrated knife will provide a cleaner cut. Thin sheets of soundproofing material can also be cut with a pair of good quality scissors. To ensure the best fit (and avoid cutting snafus) make cardboard templates first. Make sure to dry-fit everything prior to applying adhesives or peeling self-adhesive panels. When planning your installation, remember that sound flows like water: You’ll want to use special seal or joining tape provided by the manufacturer to prevent “leaks” at panel joints. Cables and hoses penetrating the material should be sealed using tight-fitting rubber grommets. Access hatches should close snugly with a tight seal. That being said, don’t forget to provide adequate ventilation for the engine. Required vents and air holes can be quieted using air baffles. It’s not realistic to expect all noise to be eliminated once soundproofing is installed, but when done correctly you should be able to carry on a conversation at a normal volume. After all, who wants to yell when trying to relax? ★

Do Your Homework Things to consider when purchasing new electronics.

ith all the options available in today’s market, selecting new electronics for your boat can be a daunting task. If you put some forethought into what will work for you and your boat, however — both now and in the future — the process becomes manageable. There are several considerations that need to be taken into account before shelling out hard-earned dollars for fancy new electronics.

1. Make a list One of the first things to think about is what exactly you’ll be doing with your boat and how to tailor electronics to those activities. If you take day trips in familiar waters, you may not need a high-end combination display that includes an autorouting chartplotter and side-scanning sonar. Similarly, if you are an avid fisherman who explores new waters, you may want to opt for top-of-the-line sonar, as well as forward and real-time scanning sounders. Start by making a list of all the features you would like in your marine electronics. Manufacturers are constantly adding more bells and whistles to their products to entice you to buy their latest models. If you have a list of what you really need, it will help keep you on track. 2. Size does matter The most common advice any experienced marine electronics aficionado will give is to choose a display as big as the real estate will allow. Of course your budget will also factor in, as marine display prices jump considerably as the diagonal screen size increases. You will want to take into account the resolution and visibility in bright sunlight. You may find cheaper units with seemingly large screens but have a tough time seeing them clearly on a sunny day. You may be able to go with two displays connected together and enjoy differing information on each, or perhaps you would prefer one large screen with customized split screens. If this is the case, keep in mind that the larger the screen, the larger each of the divided screens will be. If you are like me, with eyes not quite what they used to be, larger screens can be the difference between seeing clearly and getting frustrated. Once you start using your electronics you will find that zooming in and out of a chart and having to switch between screens can be cumbersome and annoying. A screen large enough to clearly display the information you use often can prove to be a valuable asset. 3. Think about the future You have made a list of what you want now, but does the equipment you’re considering have the ability to grow and

expand as your boating lifestyle does? Will it interface with your engines to display and share data? Can you add radar later if you so wish? Will the operating system allow future technology to be added, or is the equipment you are looking at discounted because it’s being discontinued and will not work with new product offerings? Marine electronics are no different from other electronics — technology is moving fast and products are continually evolving and developing. Be aware that new products (not too far down the road) may supersede the system you buy today.

4. Ease of installation Ease of operation and installation are also factors worth considering, whether you install it yourself or have a technician do it. If you are so inclined and the installation is easy, you can save money by doing the work. If you choose to have a technician do the work, you can save on hours of labor. There is no better way to see if the units you’re considering are easy to operate than by pushing buttons and playing with the equipment in-person. You can do so at shows, dealers or big box retailers. Try before you buy because some equipment is easy to operate, while others can seem quite complicated. Do your homework and push buttons before spending any of your hard-earned cash. You will end up with electronics that fit your needs and will help you enjoy your time on the water. ★

AT THE DOCK As I approach the C53 from the dock, my first reaction is: This canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be the right boat. For a 53-foot, 43,000-pound cruiser with room to comfortably accommodate six people, the boat is neither imposing nor ungainly. The beautifully designed hull and wheelhouse, and sleek, subtle lines create the impression of a boat that could easily be singlehanded, which turned out to be true. Stepping aboard presents an entirely different view. The wide aft lounge, forward seating, height-adjustable table and optional television make the 15-foot-wide cockpit feel like an extension of the salon. The cockpit seems to be designed as more of an outdoor living space, rather than just an area for wet swimmers and sunbathers. Transom storage, retractable power cables and a hand-held shower are to be expected in a boat of this quality, as is the cushy, recessed sunpad on the bow. An optional hydraulic swim platform makes in-water activities more fun when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dropped 18 inches below the surface. Natural light floods the salon, thanks to full-width windows and sliding glass entryway doors. The galley has room for two people to comfortably prepare dinner on quartz countertops. With the under-mounted sink and recessed cooktop covered, there is plenty of room to display an ample selection of hors d’oeuvres, entrees and drinks for guests. Cooking and preparation options are along the port side of the galley with cold storage provided by the dual Isotherm drawer units to starboard. There are plenty of overhead and lower cabinets, options for a garbage disposal, and either an icemaker or cold beverage storage. In the salon, U-shaped seating and a separate loveseat are surrounded by plenty of glass. There is even a retractable sunroof to usher in more light. The large side windows give every seat a view of the water, which only changes when the 40-inch TV is raised from behind the loveseat — or when the shades are pulled down and the windshield privacy curtain completes the transition from cruiser to cottage at day’s end.

At the helm, dual screens of Volvo’s Glass Cockpit dashboard system are more reminiscent of a private jet than a pleasure boat. The Garmin touch-screens provide customizable gauge packages for both of the 725-hp IPS950 drive systems. Simply hold a fingertip to the surface and the captain can swap voltage for manifold pressure, or engine temperature for prop speed; any desired instrument combination is just a touch away. The glass panels can also provide up to four navigation screens and controls for the Fusion entertainment package. The captain has complete control over what’s on-screen and can resize charts by pinching two fingers. Joystick controls are becoming the standard on many boats, but the futuristic design and handling characteristics continue to impress me. experience them. The touch of a button will lock the boat in place while in the slip or on open water. With the DPS active, you can untie all of the dock lines, put away cords and bumpers, and make your way back to the helm when you’re ready to go; the boat will stay in place. The performance of the C53 is exceptional for its size and class. The boat was designed with a focus on fun — and it shows. The boat handles like a 25-foot sport boat instead of a 53-foot luxury cruiser, responding to the throttles as if she was born to run. During the sea trial, the C53 accelerated to an optimum cruising speed of 28.1 mph in just 11.5 seconds at 2100 rpm. Kick it up a notch and cruise at 32.1 mph at 2250 rpm. The Drive Mode feature, which is coupled with the autopilot, will keep the boat on your chosen course by simply steering. Turn the boat, let go of the controls, and she will track straight and true until you tell her otherwise. One person can easily handle the C53. The boat’s 360-degree visibility and joystick controls allow the captain to face aft while backing into the slip. Even without the optional bow thruster, Volvo’s IPS system can walk the boat perfectly sideways. Engaging the DPS will hold the C53 steady while dock lines and cables are reattached, giving the owner the option to enjoy a quiet day on the water, or a fun-filled family escape.

BACK IN THE SLIP

Below, a wide atrium allows access to the staterooms and heads. The forward VIP stateroom with its “scissor” berth has bunks on either side that can be combined into a queen-sized bed. The space also has ample storage beneath the bunks and a cedar-lined hanging closet. A private access door to the head can be closed and locked for privacy while still allowing head access for other guests. A portside utility closet holds a stackable washer and dryer with room for hanging clothes. The space can be

optionally configured as a third stateroom with top and bottom bunks, combining the washer/dryer into one unit in the master stateroom cabinet. Just inside the master entry is a private head. The C53 has skylights with privacy screens that bring natural light into traditionally dark spaces, such as the heads and aft stateroom. Both the master and VIP heads are brightly lit, with room to close the door and comfortably prepare for dinner in port. Both heads feature separate fiberglass shower stalls with glass doors, teak seats, lighted medicine cabinets with mirrors and vanity storage. The master includes an overhead waterfall shower, and both have Vacu-Flush toilet systems for onboard freshwater preservation. Further aft is one of the brightest master suites Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever seen. Natural light pouring in through the hullside windows combined with clean colors creates the feel of a much larger

space. The queen-sized berth leaves plenty of room to move around either side, and exceptional headroom throughout the boat adds to the comfort of the stateroom. A separate stereo system is hidden in the aft nightstand and a 32-inch flat panel TV and BlueRay player allow for a comfortable, private place to spend rainy afternoons or lazy evenings while guests enjoy the main salon. DO I NEED BOAT INSURANCE?

YOU’RE PROBABLY NOT REQUIRED by law to have boat insurance, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need it. Even if your state does not require you to carry boat insurance, your bank will if you have a loan on the boat. Also, most marinas require proof of liability insurance before they will accept a contract for a slip or a mooring. If you’re required to carry boat insurance, your homeowner policy will generally not be acceptable to them because homeowner’s policies are usually limited to boats under a certain size or value, and they don’t have the necessary provisions to cover the types of losses that may occur with a boat. Look for “All Risk” policies, which provide coverage for a broad array of calamities that could befall your boat, including theft, vandalism, lightning, fire, grounding or sinking, and lost or stolen belongings. Look for options that will protect your personal items, such as watersports equipment and fishing gear, as well as provide towing coverage in the unfortunate event of a breakdown. Many companies also give you the option for an inexpensive policy that does not insure physical damage to your boat at all, but only provides a specified amount of coverage for your liability to others in the event of an accident, as well as protection from uninsured boaters. Even if you are not otherwise required to have insurance and your boat is not worth very much, you should still consider insuring it. A collision with a small powerboat can cause serious injuries, and even if you are not found liable for those injuries, you could end up spending a significant amount of money in legal fees to defend yourself. Get a quote on several different policies so you can make an informed decision based on the coverages versus the cost. The more your boat is worth, the more important insurance becomes to protect yourself from financial loss.

NEW TECHNOLOGY: MARINE WINTER FUEL MANAGEMENT

FUEL IN BOATS going into winter storage needs to be stabilized. However, in order to ensure peak performance in the spring, you need to do much more than just stabilize the fuel. In addition to preventing gum and debris formation, fuel must also be protected against moisture. Ethanolblended gasoline is especially susceptible to degradation because ethanol (alcohol) and gasoline cannot form a chemical bond. Within 30-45 days of blending, E10 begins to deteriorate, forming gums that cause engines to run rough or become difficult to start as the carburetors, fuel injectors, valves, rings and combustion chambers develop deposits. Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment stabilizes fuel for up to 2 years, but it does much more. Star Tron’s enzymes maintain fuel chemistry in all fuels, plus they also enhance fuel combustibility, break apart and disperse gums and other debris, and treat moisture in fuel without the use of alcohol. Star Tron uses a combination of enzymes – reactants - that continue working until the fuel is consumed in the combustion chamber. Enzymes have been used by fuel refiners for more than 50 years to improve combustibility and stabilize fuel chemistry. While some enzymes are stabilizing fuel chemistry, other enzymes improve fuel combustibility while others break apart and disperse gums and other debris or disperse water throughout the fuel. This also results in maximum power, improved fuel economy, prevention of deposits and decreased emissions, to ensure that engines

start easily and run strong when they come out of storage. Many mechanics regularly use Star Tron to clean dirty carburetors or fuel injectors, simply adding a heavy dose to the fuel before running the engine. Because Star Tron’s enzymes are in a fuel suspension, it cannot be overdosed or in any other way cause harm to engines or fuel delivery systems. E10 fuel can hold some amount of water, which can be a problem in the spring. Some treatments rely on alcohol, or other emulsifiers that “clump” water molecules together and cannot remove them. Star Tron’s enzymes are de-emulsifiers, actively breaking apart clusters of water molecules so that they can be widely dispersed throughout the fuel. arla loved Île-à-Vache, Haiti and seeing Cuba before its tourism surges. Sebastián fondly remembers arriving at the beautiful Port of Horta in the Azores after a few long weeks of sailing. The kids enjoyed the many sounds and smells of Rabat and Marrakesh in Morocco. The time spent winding through the small villages of Africa — Senegal, Gambia and Cape Verde — were unforgettable, according to the Koziura family. Even though they’ve been back for more than four years, the Koziuras still have a hard time narrowing down their list of favorite ports and adventures from an epic transatlantic sailing trip they began in 2010. The 18-month journey took the Koziuras — Karla and Sebastián, plus their kids Sofia and Benjie — to 21 different countries and over 13,000 nautical miles, introducing them to new people, places and cultures. Lakeland Boating caught up with Sebastián and Karla at Frio Gelato — the small Argentinian gelato store the couple opened in Evanston, Illinois after their return — to learn more about their trip and recommendations for other boaters who dream of going on a long-term cruise.

FALLING INTO PLACE

Sebastián became the captain of the journey, both literally and metaphorically. Growing up in Argentina, Sebastián began sailing at a young age, first with his parents, and then on his own. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean was a lifelong dream of his. Around 2008, events in the Koziuras’ lives began to fall into place in such a way that it became apparent it was now or never: The timing was perfect to set out on an Atlantic journey and fulfill Sebastián’s dream. The family’s main business, real estate, was struggling due to the market crash. Sofia and Benjie were old enough to sail, but not yet in the sulky teenager phase (which the Koziuras were told is not fun to deal with for months on a small boat). Then, in the same year they left, Karla lost her mother and Sebastián lost his grandfather. “They were both people who lived their lives to the fullest. We wondered, ‘What are we going to say on our deathbed? Are we going to be able to say we accomplished our dreams?’” Karla says. Despite being a self-proclaimed “reluctant sailor,” Karla says they decided to make the trip. “It just felt like the right time for so many reasons. Plus, I didn’t want to be a fraidy cat; I want to take advantage of opportunities. It seemed like an incredible one for our kids.”

GETTING READY

For the next nine months, the Koziuras were in full preparation mode. Since Sebastián had been reading up on transatlantic crossings for years, plotting the route was fairly easy. In fact, by simply avoiding bad weather — or following the summer and avoiding hurricane seasons — much of the trip planned itself. Instead, Sebastián’s focus centered on preparing the boat, a 2001 38-foot Fountaine Pajot Athena, named the Begonia. The Koziuras purchased the catamaran from a charter fleet in the Caribbean. About three years before their trip, they had conveniently done a complete refit of the sailboat, replacing engines, rigging and sails. The year before their journey, Sebastián made frequent trips to Florida, where the Begonia was docked, to get the ship set to sail; he focused on safety, communication and comfort. When they set sail, Sofia was 7 and Benjie was 4. In retrospect, Karla says the kids had so much one-on-one time with parents and down time for reading that she could have stressed less about creating a rigorous academic plan. Three weeks before they officially set sail, the Koziuras headed down to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for some last minute preparations. They made Costco runs, stored canned goods and organized the boat. After Christmas, the trip began.

THE BIG TRIP

The Koziuras set sail on their 18-month journey at the end of December 2010. From Florida, they looped down through the Caribbean, visiting countries such as the Bahamas, where they found a beach crowded with wild pigs; the Dominican Republic, where they caught and ate fresh lobster; and Saint Martin, where Karla stayed with the kids for a month while Sebastián made the first Atlantic crossing with a small crew. After about two weeks of crossing the Atlantic, Sebastián and the family reunited in the Azores, off the coast of Portugal. They then took the Begonia around Spain and the Balearics, to Morocco and back to the Canary Islands. Often, the Koziuras would meet

others also on a trip across the Atlantic and “buddy boat” with them for days to weeks. Sebastián and Karla say the kids’ favorite stops seemed to be wherever they could find other kids to hang out with. The Koziuras say they often met other families making the transatlantic trip, and even befriended a couple sailing with six children. “It was surprising how often we would meet up with the same boats in a different port down the line,” says Karla. The Koziuras say the community of boaters making the transatlantic trip was a close one. They landed in the Caribbean, where they made a few more stops in countries such as Tobago, Grenada and the Bahamas, before eventually returning to the first and final stop in Fort Lauderdale.

Although they had to sell the Begonia upon their return to the U.S., the Koziuras are still reaping the benefits of their big trip. A few years ago, friends from France that they met while sailing visited them in Evanston for Thanksgiving. Just a few months ago, the family went to England to visit another family they met on their journey. “These are people we probably won’t see all the time, but every time you see them you share a dream — we share a big trip,” Sebastián says. “It’s a great connection.” The Koziuras say they haven’t been sailing too often since their return, but they haven’t dismissed another trip altogether. At the moment, they’re toying with the idea of a grand circumnavigation around the equator, maybe in 10 years or so. Although the Koziuras may not be able to pick just one favorite moment or place from their 18-month journey aboard the Begonia, they wholeheartedly agree on one thing: “Whoever dreams of doing this, they need to do it,” Sebastián says. “You can come up with a thousand excuses not to do this trip or a trip like this, but the bottom line is: It’s just a matter of making the decision to do it.” ★

In the winter of 2010, I began my search for a project boat. I came across a Lyman Leader in Flint, Michigan that had been posted for sale on the Lyman Boat Owners Association’s (LBOA) Trading Dock. The ad simply said, “1952 Leader, needs restoration.” After exchanging a few emails and some photos, we agreed on a price of $100 for the boat with a promise that I would fully restore it. The boat didn’t look too bad in the photos: Some ribs, a new front deck and a refinish ought to fix it up — so I thought. I drove from Cleveland, Ohio to Flint, MIchigan in January 2010 with near whiteout conditions that made the drive around 10 hours roundtrip. I thought to myself on the way home: I must have really lost my mind this time. The 13-foot Lyman Leader is a neat little boat. A bare bones and affordable fishing boat, Lyman built more than 3,000 of these little beauties between 1948 and 1960. Despite the large number of Leaders produced, they seem to be hard to find; with an original purchase price around $300, they may have been considered somewhat disposable after many years of use. I consider myself to be skilled in boat restoration; I have been restoring Lymans since I was 15 years old and spent two years while in graduate school at the University of Cincinnati working at the Antique Boat Center. I completed a keel-up restoration on the boat, which included 30 new ribs, a new bottom, a deck, gunnels, a transom, a keel and a new interior. When I bought this boat for $100, I had no idea it would be more than three years until I got it in the water. After a couple thousand dollars and hundreds of labor hours, I’m glad I spared nothing to bring this boat back to better-than-new condition. It was a perfect size and price to hone my skills.
