One particular company that has followed this fluid nature is Carver Yachts. When the industry was dealt an economic blow, the boatbuilder chose to invest in new tooling and processes to redefine how they built boats. Contributor Heather Steinberger visited Carver’s Pulaski, Wisconsin, production facility to see firsthand the redefined processes (p. 36). Hessel, Michigan-based E.J. Mertaugh Boat Works has a talent for restoring old wooden boats to their former glory. Six boats earlier, one of the questions I was asked was, “Are you married?” My answer was, “Not yet.” As time passed and the right woman never came along, new questions arrived, like: “Have you named your boat?” and “Would you like to sell your boat?” You get the gist. And so another name was born: Knotyet. I also carry a dinghy on long cruises and that has been named Knotever. You have to look closely for the name — due to the small font on the transom, the questions are still asked. First Black Female Chicago Coast Guard Commander

The glass ceiling received another crack this summer, thanks to Commander (CDR) Zeita Merchant. In July, CDR Merchant became the first black woman to lead a U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit, and also the first woman to lead Chicago’s Marine Safety Unit. CDR Merchant is a Type-I Incident Commander and has served in the Coast Guard for 19 years. She previously served as special assistant to the vice commandant of the Coast Guard and as the executive officer of the Marine Safety Unit, Texas City. Sea Tow Rents PLBs and EPIRBs There’s never an excuse to dismiss safe boating practices. Thanks to a program by the Sea Tow Foundation and supported by ACR Electronics, it’s easier to be prepared for an emergency. The Sea Tow Foundation has launched an emergency beacon rental program that allows boaters across the U.S. to rent Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) and Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) for $45 to $65 a week. Proceeds will go to Sea Tow safety programs. ACR Electronics donated eight beacons in celebration of its 60th anniversary. Lorain Lighthouse Foundation Launches GoFundMe Page EVENTS

Fall Art Exhibit at The Inn at Harbor Shores The magic of water lilies has been transformed into works of art. Michigan artist Alli Farkas’ paintings will be on display at the “Sky Pads - Water Lily Interpretations by Alli Farkas” exhibit at the Inn at Harbor Shores in St. Joseph, Michigan. From September 23 until January 16, the gallery will display Farkas’ artwork and host an artist reception on October 13. The event is free and open to the public. “Whether a portrait, landscape or renderings of rural buildings, I construct the image through layers, attempting always to create a sense of depth through transparency, color and light,” Farkas says. The Lorain Lighthouse, known as the “Jewel of the Port,” stands as a beacon to the city of Lorain, Ohio. Next year marks the historic lighthouse’s 100th anniversary. To celebrate, the Lorain Lighthouse Foundation launched a GoFundMe campaign to help raise $24,000 for restoration projects, lighthouse operations and the 100th anniversary celebration. The money raised will also help the Foundation with utility and insurance costs related to the operation of its restored fourth order Fresnel Lens. Other proposed projects from the raised funds include: Installing memorials at the lighthouse; re-fitting the work boat; relocating a flag pole; and offering live stream videos. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1965 and scheduled for demolition in 1989, but was saved when a private group agreed to take ownership of the lighthouse. Rare 18th Century Shipwreck Found in Lake Ontario

In August, the National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo, Ohio, reported the discovery of one of the oldest, fully intact shipwrecks of a commercial sailing vessel in Lake Ontario. The Washington was a small, single-masted sloop built near Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1797. The ship was used on Lake Erie for several years and then transported to Canada for use on Lake Ontario. It was the first ship to sail on two Great Lakes. On November 6, 1803, the Washington set sail from Kingston, Ontario, with five men on-board when she met her fatal demise in Lake Ontario. The shipwreck exploration team of Jim Kennard, Roger Pawlowksi and Roland Stevens — funded by a grant from the National Museum of the Great Lakes — discovered the Washington’s remains near Oswego, New York. MBIA announces $10,000 matching grant In June, the board of directors for the Michigan Boating Industries Association (MBIA) contributed $10,000 to the Recreational Boating Industries Educational Foundation (RBIEF) as a matching grant. The RBIEF is a non-profit that provides financial support for the education, training and professional development of people in the recreational marine trades. Since its start in 1986, the RBIEF has donated more than $350,000 to students and MBIA members for college and continuing education programs. MBIA board chairman Tom Haag says he hopes the $10,000 matching grant will increase awareness about the many available jobs in Michigan’s recreational marine industry. 66th Annual Governor’s Cup Jimmy Shane of Covington, Washington, drove to a first place finish in his HomeStreet Bank/Miss Madisonsponsored unlimited hydroplane at the Madison Regatta’s 66th running of the Indiana Governor’s Cup. The event was held over the July 4 weekend in Madison, Indiana. This was the 2016 season opener of the H1 Unlimited series. Shane reached an average speed of 137.12 mph on the 2.8-mile Ohio River racecourse. This was Shane’s first win at the Madison Regatta, his sixth victory with the Miss Madison team and his 12th career win overall. Capt. Christopher Kelly Passes Away

The boating community lost an innovative and good-natured member to lung cancer this summer. Captain Christopher Kelly — an award-winning multimedia producer and publisher, magazine editor and entrepreneur — passed away July 5 in Norwalk, Connecticut. Kelly leaves behind a long list of successful entrepreneurial marine pursuits: He founded American Marine Training, BoatTest.com and VehiclesTest.com. He also worked as executive editor at Power & Motoryacht magazine, as well as in various positions for Bonnier and Active Interest Media. He pursued hobbies such as scuba diving, flying private planes, traveling and coaching softball. He is survived by his wife of 18 years and their two children.

The 2016 Tiara Yachts Lake Michigan Rendezvous was co-hosted by SkipperBud’s and Walstrom Marine, and was the first Great Lakes Rendezvous Tiara has hosted since 2012. Eighteen boats attended the two-day event in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and enjoyed ideal boating weather. The event kicked off on August 3 with a wonderful BBQ dinner prepared and cooked by the SkipperBud’s team. On Thursday morning, the group enjoyed a tour of the Door County Maritime Museum, followed by an afternoon shopping trip to Fish Creek, WI. DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier

Quick Cleats he absence of a cleat where it’s needed most will make you fully appreciate their value. As a marine surveyor, I see too many cases where builders have skimped on the size, number or placement of cleats — sometimes they skimp on all three. Fortunately, an undersized or missing cleat is a problem that can be easily corrected with a little planning and an hour or so of DIY time. Here’s how to install a new cleat or upgrade an existing one. Solid vs. cored decking Mounting a cleat in solid fiberglass is fairly straightforward. Drilling into a cored deck, however, requires additional steps to prevent damage to the coring. In a perfect world, the boat manufacturer would anticipate where additional cleats are needed and “de-core” these areas by reverting to solid fiberglass. In the real world, however, you’ll likely have to do a little de-coring of your own. If the coring is plywood, simply wet the raw edges of the coring with a few coats of epoxy after drilling or cutting to prevent water migration into the coring. If the coring is a softer material (balsa, foam, etc.), it’s best to de-core the area as explained below.

How to de-core 1. Using the cleat mounting holes as a guide, take a 1-inch hole saw (or larger, depending on the size of your backing plate or washers) and remove the coring from the underside of the deck where each bolt is to be installed. Be careful not to drill through or damage the upper layer of fiberglass. You also have the option of removing a single section of coring large enough to encompass both bolts. Drill almost through the coring, but leave the last quarter-inch or so to be removed by hand to avoid any chance of damaging that outer fiberglass layer. 2. Once the cutout and coring are removed, seal the exposed edges of the coring in the holes with epoxy. Then, mount the cleat using properly sized backing plates/washers and a suitable marine-grade caulk. 3. Depending on the installation, another option would be to fill the holes entirely with thickened epoxy, drill new mounting holes through the epoxy, and then mount the cleat using a good bedding compound. This method not only keeps moisture out of the coring, but also provides a solid backing when tightening the cleat mounting hardware. Tips for a successful installation 1. For new cleats, verify that the location has adequate access and clearance beneath the deck to carry out the installation. 2. Determine the size and type of cleat you want (i.e. a traditional “horn” type or a fold-up, pop-up or pull-up model). Mounting a new cleat is primarily a matter of correct

placement of the drilling template or cut-out, depending on the type of cleat. If upgrading a traditional cleat with a larger one, the footprint of the new cleat probably won’t match the existing hole pattern. If you’re lucky, the base of the new cleat will cover the existing holes, in which case you can simply seal them with thickened epoxy. Otherwise, the new cleat may need a base of some suitable material (wood, StarBoard, etc.) to cover the holes once sealed. If replacing a traditional cleat with a pop-up or similar style, the best scenario is locating the required cut-out over the existing holes. 3. Cover the area with masking tape to protect the gelcoat from scratches and to help prevent chipping while drilling or cutting. 4. For traditional cleats, use a template (if provided) or the base of the cleat to mark the mounting holes. 5. Run the drill in reverse until it’s all the way through the gelcoat to help prevent chipping; switch to forward and continue drilling. Bevel each hole to prevent future gelcoat from cracking and provide a better seal once caulk is applied. 6. Pop-up or pull-up cleats require an additional hole be cut in the deck. Most come with a pre-cut backing plate, which makes an excellent drilling and cutting template. Place the backing plate where the cleat will be mounted, drill the first hole, insert a bolt to keep the plate in place and then drill the remaining bolt holes. Insert a bolt into each of the holes, then tighten down two bolts at opposite ends (to prevent the template from moving), and use it as a guide to cut the hole with a Dremel or rotary tool. Thicker decks may require the use of a jigsaw or sabre saw. 7. Once the holes are drilled, dry fit the cleat to ensure a perfect fit prior to bedding (caulking). Make sure there is room to install the backing plate or large, thick fender washers. 8. Bed the cleat with a suitable marine-grade caulk. Polysulfides (such as BoatLIFE’s Life-Caulk) or hybrid caulks (such as West Marine’s Polyether Multi-Caulk Sealant) work well, but avoid Polyurethane adhesives (such as 3M 5200), as they make future removal and re-bedding difficult. 9. Apply caulking to the base of the cleat and top of the backing plate. Snug up the mounting hardware using Nyloc nuts or lock washers until you first see the bedding compound ooze out around the edges. Leave it overnight to set up and form a gasket. Come back the next day and tighten to the proper torque. Avoid over tightening, however, which can crush laminate and deform hardware. ★

echnology found on-board recreational vessels today can be quite impressive, but can also initially appear complicated and daunting. Adding data or equipment may be considered difficult and for some not worth the effort. The truth is that a multi-function display with GPS, charting and sounder capabilities is a technical marvel — capable of displaying more information than ever before possible. And if it has NMEA 2000 capability, adding information and equipment has never been easier. What is NMEA 2000? The National Marine Electronics Association developed NMEA 2000 (N2K) as an industry standardized networking system to ensure products can communicate together in an easy “plug and play” manner. By creating a common certification tool that requires the same cables and connectors, NMEA was able to create a robust system. This system allows marine manufacturers to connect components that can easily share data, such as engine, navigation, fluid monitoring, depth and power distribution. The system is simple, and as such can be easily added by a DIY boat owner. Comprised of a single “backbone,” N2K acts as the main link between existing and easily added components that connect to and between T-connectors. Those T-connectors in turn plug into a drop cable coming from the N2K-capable device that is being added to the network. With termination resistors at each end of the backbone and a special T-connector that hooks to 12 volts, you have a complete N2K backbone that can be added to at any time without affecting other components in the

Installing on larger yachts Things get a bit more complicated if you are working with larger boat systems or running the backbone over longer distances. There are several physical limitations to this type of network, such as a maximum of 6-meter drops and no more than 50 connected products per backbone. These obstacles can be overcome but require a bit more planning and a greater understanding of the voltage and special requirements of N2K. Installation on larger boat systems is not out of the realm of a DIY enthusiast, but it does require more research. It doesn’t matter if you have a large yacht with complex on-board systems or a small runabout with basic depth and navigation equipment — NMEA 2000 interfacing can improve your system by adding valuable information with simple, robust installation and connections. Don’t be intimidated. Throw your boat a bone — a backbone — and enjoy greater data capability aboard. ★

Individual components like drop cables and T-connectors are also available from manufacturers such as Maretron, which sells a full spectrum of N2K components. Kits from Garmin and Navico include the necessary 12-volt connector, along with T-connectors, terminators and drop cables, which will allow for the connection of one device to an existing multi-function display. Simply add another T-connector and drop cable if there is more than one device being added to the backbone. Manufacturers are now offering their own N2K interfaces, including major engine manufacturers that allow engine data to be displayed on today’s navigation displays. They connect into existing wire harnesses and engine sensors, and connect into the N2K system via a drop cable. There are now even N2K gateways that can convert other forms of data, such as the older and simpler NMEA 0183 data format, which is the most common interface on today’s VHF radios. By hooking these VHFs via the gateway, the radio can now connect into the backbone via N2K. This is a great feature that allows the VHF to transmit your GPS position when its distress (Digital Selective Calling, or DSC) button is pushed.

arbon monoxide (CO) is colorless, odorless and can be deadly. Carbon monoxide readily replaces the oxygen we need to breathe; exposure to the gas causes headaches and nausea, which may resemble seasickness. Fortunately, CO poisoning is preventable and easily detected with an inexpensive monitor. The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) have long advocated for safety measures concerning carbon monoxide poisoning, urging boaters and boating facilities to install CO detectors. Fifty U.S. deaths were linked to boat CO poisoning from 2010 to 2014. Minnesota was the first state to establish a carbon monoxide detector law for boats earlier this year. This comes after the death of 7-year-old Sophia Baechler in 2015; while Sophia was sleeping on her family’s boat in Lake Minnetonka, CO leaked into her cabin from a hole in the boat’s exhaust pipe. By May 1, 2017, Minnesota will require that some types of motorboats are installed with hard-wired, marinecertified CO detectors. This law includes new and used powerboats with enclosed accommodation areas, sleeping berths, galleys with sinks and toilet facilities. CO warning labels will be required aft on all boats 19 feet or longer, and all approved boating courses must cover carbon monoxide poisoning information. Look for other states to follow suit. How is CO created? During combustion — when carbon-based fuels like gasoline or diesel aren’t burned efficiently — CO is produced as a waste product. Gasoline engines produce much more carbon monoxide than diesel ones, but even a little exposure to this gas is harmful. Fumes can migrate into boat cabins or holding areas where people work and sleep. Since boats are meant to be watertight, they are perfect for creating pockets to hold these fumes.

Where does it occur? At the dock, an idling engine with fumes hanging around becomes hazardous to people within the area. Other gas/diesel engines — like power washers, paint sprayers, generators or heaters — are just as bad. Leaking propane appliances and even grills can create CO buildup. On the water, breathing carbon monoxide is likely: While motoring slowly; while waiting for skiers or those trying to get on towables; and while sitting or swimming near the boat’s

engine when it’s idling. Rule of thumb: If you can smell exhaust, you are inhaling carbon monoxide. In this case, boat operators should cut off the engine and motion for passengers and those in the water to move to other areas until the fumes dissipate. CO poisoning symptoms and treatment Exposure to carbon monoxide is serious. As long as a person or animal is breathing it in, CO accumulates in the lungs, blood and brain. Without breathing in oxygen, the person can become confused, dizzy and is unable to move or get out of the area — collapsing will occur next. Breathing in large quantities of CO is cumulative, causing sleepiness, unconsciousness and eventually death. Those most vulnerable to CO poisoning are children, pregnant women, elderly people, and those with chronic pulmonary problems or COPD. People and animals need to move from the affected area to fresh air, or go to a hospital for treatment. Having a small canister of oxygen on-board may save a life. CO detectors Opening doors, windows and creating ventilation will move gas away from confined areas — but that isn’t enough. Prevention is important and monitoring CO with a detector is necessary for all boats. Hard-wired detectors in large boats make sense, and adding a compact detector or two is smart. Some instruments detect multiple types of fumes but may not detect carbon monoxide; use only certified marine CO detectors. These new units have better alarms and are triggered with lower levels of the gas. Expect to pay $60-$100 for wall-mounted detectors. Other tips Keep all equipment maintained. Try to reduce carbon buildup in the engine and use a high-octane gas that burns more efficiently. Dock upwind from other boats, at least 20 feet away, and reduce idling engine time while rafting up. Understand and recognize the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning and pass this information on to others on-board. Monitor those near the swim platform or swimming near the engine, and watch for changing or no wind. Test your carbon monoxide detector frequently and replace old batteries. ★

ith a big dose of European flare and a lot of boat building history, Beneteau introduces the Gran Turismo 46. The GT 46 is all about blending environments to create a relaxing oasis, from the sleek profile — complete with hullside windows and a completely open hardtop — to the openness of the salon, thanks to the single-pane windshield, electric glazed side windows and sunroof. Aft glass doors open fully to extend the salon into the aft deck. Here, the aft settee transforms into an electrically actuated recliner, and the salon bench seats pivot to make this a sun lounge. Enjoy the bow sunpads that convert into chaise lounge seats. In the salon, there’s seating on both sides with a starboard L-settee flanking a teak folding table. Opt for a third stateroom to starboard with dual bunks, or keep this space for a U-shaped settee and a table. That may work well, as the galley is right across in the atrium. he Regal Marine website says that the calling card for the 22 FasDeck is “to hang out and have fun.” With an open layout, proven hull and a plethora of options to choose from, you can’t help but have fun on the 22 FasDeck. Step aboard via the transom walk-thru. There’s a place for everyone, thanks to the oversized bow seating that doubles as loungers. Grabrails and cup holders are strategically placed throughout. Fill-in cushions transform this bow space into a large sunpad, perfect for catching some rays. In the cockpit is a large U-shaped upholstered seat. A portside helm seat converts by flipping the backrest to create additional seating or an aft-facing lounge. sn’t it fun to daydream about the perfect Great Lakes cruiser? Daydreaming is one thing, but creating this fantasy boat is another matter altogether. That was exactly the challenge Steve Scotchmer faced when the Toronto businessman and lifelong sailor decided the time had come to build a powerboat; one capable of handling the sometimes rough waters of the open Great Lakes, spacious enough for extended cruising, and with efficiency and performance top-of-mind. Between his carefully considered criteria and the performance of a Mark Ellis-designed hull, the groundbreaking Abaco 40 was born. Produced by Bruckmann Yachts in Mississauga, Ontario, the Abaco 40 has been quietly turning heads since it first felt water on its keel. Bruckmann Yachts got its start when Erich Bruckmann created the custom division of C&C Yachts from the mid- 60s to 1990. Iconic yachts such as Sorcery, Red Jacket, Evergreen and Archangel dominated the racing scene, setting new standards of performance and construction. Erich’s son Mark apprenticed in Europe with several of the world’s premier yards and returned to Canada to pick up the family trade, elevating it to a level of perfection unparalleled in North America.

Comfortable compromise The elegant 39-foot, Downeast-style classic cruiser was designed first and foremost as a stylish but practical day boat, with accommodations spacious enough to handle extended voyages for two. Once you step aboard via the generous rear swim platform, you’ll notice that the Abaco 40 is quite unique. Enter through the neatly fitted transom door into the boat’s spacious rear cockpit. The standard arrangement consists of three cockpit seats: One across the transom, and one to each side butting up to the pilothouse. The cockpit’s attractive sand-textured, non-skid fiberglass sole allows this area to handle heavy traffic with ease. The sailboat-inspired cockpit seats offer a generous amount of storage space in their bases. The seats are also long enough to put your feet up and enjoy the outdoors under the protection of the overhead sunshield. With a nod to practicality, 4-inch removable foam cushions can be stored indoors overnight to protect against dew. Should a buyer wish, the cockpit seats can be removed to create a more open stern for fishing. Brilliant design The influence of Scotchmer’s sailing background can be seen not only in the cockpit’s seating arrangement, but also in the functional side decks. Finished in the same sand-textured, non-skid surface as the cockpit sole, the wide side decks not only provide comfortable access to the bow, but the channeled construction helps keep the cockpit dry in heavy weather. Any spray that finds its way over the gracefully flared bow simply flows aft along the side decks, confined within the raised edges until the spray runs off at the stern. It’s a simple but brilliant design that effectively keeps stray water out of the cockpit. Equally innovative is the inclusion of a screened door at the entrance to the main salon. This simple addition, discreetly hidden behind the twin sliding entrance doors, allows owners to enjoy the boat much earlier in the season when mosquito activity might otherwise prove annoying. Stepping into the salon, a pair of facing 6-foot, 6-inch settees with 5-inch foam upholstered cushions is large and comfortable enough to convert into inviting berths for overnight guests. Each settee offers a cavernous stowage compartment in its base, capable of storing surprisingly large or bulky items. A beautiful drop-leaf mahogany dining table between the seats handles casual drinks or full meals with equal ease.

Remarkable performance The Abaco 40 is made for cruising couples, so the single suite layout makes the most of the available floor space. Our review boat was set up with a V-berth arrangement, although an island double bed is also available. The suite is bright and spacious, with plenty of storage space for longer trips. The single-suite design is a result of the placement of the Abaco 40’s engine amidships, directly below the salon and accessible through a large but discreet hatch in the salon sole. This arrangement is a significant factor — along with the Mark Ellis Power Chine hull form — in the Abaco 40’s remarkable performance. The low, carefully balanced center of gravity provides the Abaco 40 with great handling in rough seas, and allows the boat to plane at substantially lower speeds than traditional deep-V hull cruisers. The boat is able to hold on plane at surprisingly low speeds, right down to about 10 knots. This unique capability gives the boat extraordinary driving performance, an amazingly soft ride and remarkable fuel economy in all conditions. Exceeding expectations The hull and deck are constructed from high performance E-glass over a foam core. In our sea trial on Lake Ontario, Scotchmer happily demonstrated how the boat planes at just 1,250 rpm and about 12 knots, which is unheard of performance for a boat this size. Top speed with the single Cummins 670-hp diesel is near 30 knots. The Abaco 40 will cruise effortlessly at around 20 knots while still delivering fuel economy in the range of 1 mpg. No, that’s not a typo, and yes, that is about double what one might expect from a 40-foot boat with 670 ponies under the hood. With the Abaco 40’s twin 150-gallon fuel tanks, this fuel efficiency represents serious range.

Form meets function The finish of the Abaco 40 is a class of its own, and that’s particularly apparent in the roomy, bright salon. The wood work — highly varnished premium mahogany over white fiberglass with a beautiful varnished teak and holly cabin sole — is simply breathtaking. Between the 360-degree picture windows and the overhead hatch vents, the cabin lets in plenty of sunlight and fresh air. The driver and co-pilot enjoy the comfort of twin Stidd premium pedestal seats, each with fully-adjustable armrests and substantial, fold-down footrests. Visibility from the helm is outstanding in all directions, thanks in part to the oversized cockpit windows that are designed to minimize glare. The helm itself is a study in form meets function. The classic styling of its large mahogany-over-stainless steel steering wheel blends with the neatly arched wooden dash panel. The dash features a large Furuno NavNet 3D multi-function color display, complemented with Furuno digital instrumentation, an in-dash VHF and VesselView digital control. Hydraulic steering and electronic throttle shift control are nice touches. Achieving the elegant look of a classic Downeast-style cruiser doesn’t come at the expense of modern amenities in the Abaco 40. Three steps down is the portside, U-shaped galley, which is well-lit from large overhead windows. Open to the salon for optimal illumination and ventilation, the galley is masterfully designed with a front-opening 12-volt refrigerator, a separate top access 12-volt freezer, a two-burner ceramic cooktop, a microwave oven and storage spaces positioned within easy reach. The lacquered mahogany-on-white finish gives the galley a bright, appealing look that’s as beautiful as it is functional. The Corian counter’s raised mahogany edge and polished, under-mount stainless steel sink provide an elegant touch. A roomy head with a Vacuflush toilet and a full separate shower supported by an 11-gallon water heater is located to starboard opposite the galley.

The hull tracks beautifully underway, due in part to a long, deep skeg that not only provides directional stability but also serves to protect the single four-blade bronze prop, should the bottom turn up where it shouldn’t. Bow and stern Side-Power thrusters make close quarter maneuvering as simple as flipping a switch and are a real plus in this single-crew boat. The exquisite fit and finish of the Abaco 40 interior is also evident on deck. Up front, there’s a windlass with a stainless steel anchor and anchor roller, six 10-inch stainless steel mooring cleats, and a beautifully welded 1.25-inch stainless steel bow rail that extends all the way aft to the cockpit. Four Lewmar stainless steel hatches with Oceanair screens and shades work in conjunction with four stainless steel opening ports to let in plenty of fresh air without spoiling the yacht’s classic lines. It’s always fun to daydream about how we would design our ideal Great Lakes cruiser, but after spending time aboard the Abaco 40, it’s hard to imagine a more compelling design. With its classic lines, outstanding performance and beautiful construction, the only thing I’d be inclined to change is the name on the ownership. ★

oatbuilders are a resilient, resourceful lot. They have to be — their livelihood is always at risk from sea changes that buffet the industry. In this business, it’s not a matter of if — it’s when. Just in the last half-century, builders oversaw the shift from wood to fiberglass. They endured the economic turmoil of the 1970s. They suffered the aftershocks that followed the U.S. government’s “luxury tax” in January 1990, which brought sales of boats priced at $100,000 and above to a veritable standstill. And, most recently, they faced a bomb of historic proportions with the Great Recession. Some builders hoped to simply weather the storm. Others sought to adapt once again. Carver Yachts in Pulaski, Wisconsin, is definitely in the latter camp. In the wake of the recession, the team decided to clearly differentiate between the old Carver and a new, more versatile and highly competitive Carver. With industry veteran Rob Parmentier at the helm as president and CEO, they got the go-ahead to launch a new line of boats:

They’ve unveiled five new models since January 2013, and the sixth will debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show on November 3-7. The transformation, however, went much deeper than simply producing new models. “We invested in all new tooling, from the keel up, and we took a hard look at how we use our materials,” says Josh Delforge, vice president of design and engineering. “We needed to redefine how we build our boats.” Redefining design and constRuction Rather than continue to build its hulls with hand-laid, hand-rolled fiberglass, Carver has opted to use vacuum-infused resin technology. Craftspeople load the molds with dry fiberglassengineered fabric, put a bag on, vacuum seal it and then open the resin feed line. In just minutes, this draws the precise amount of resin to saturate the fiberglass laminate, which eliminates voids and any excess fiberglass and resin build-up.

Despite its evolution, boatbuilding is not automated. It’s very much hands-on: From sanding metal parts in preparation for the painting process (top); to using a computer controlled water-jet cutter for metal parts (middle); to the vacuum-infusion process (bottom).

This process virtually eradicates the noxious airborne fibers and odors so well known to all who have frequented boatbuilding plants over the years. It also allows the builder to create a lighter, stronger boat; conserve on excess material; and provide additional savings on the back end. “Vacuum infusion was an extra investment, but now our design tolerances have smaller and tighter variances,” Delforge explains. “We jumped in headfirst, but it was worth it. Now a model might be just 50 pounds (off) rather than hundreds.” “That matters for boat owners, because if a boat is 2,500 pounds too heavy, it’ll need repropping to run right,” adds Kelly Kraning, Carver’s national sales manager. “And, since our costs are now less, we can keep retail costs lower.” Another new aspect of Carver’s production process is its relationship with Donald L. Blount and Associates Inc., a naval architecture and marine engineering firm based in Chesapeake, Virginia, that specializes in the technical development of high-performance vessels. Although the Carver team handles its design and engineering in-house, it leverages Blount’s extensive knowledge and expertise to develop very specific lamination schedules based on parameters such as hull speed and longitudinal center of gravity. “We send Blount the three-dimensional models of the hulls and stringer systems, and we go back and forth,” Delforge says. “Three weeks later, it’s done.” The company has a new way of installing stringers to both speed up the process and improve quality. After hand-laying fiberglass-engineered

fabric through the entire deck-support grid, the team determines the molded stringers’ strength in pounds per square inch. The final stringer grid is then glued with a 3-inch flange. Not only does this provide better adhesion than tabbing, it has a valuable unintended consequence. “Because the floor is glued to the stringers, it absorbs energy, which makes it act as a shock absorber,” Delforge explains. “This is a quieter, smoother ride. I tell people they have to experience it to fully appreciate it.” The stringers extend through the bow to prevent oil canning or buckling, and to reduce vibration in head seas. These are significant benefits, as the new Carver Yachts models are designed to go 30 knots or more in a wide range of sea conditions. “That’s up to 40 miles per hour,” Delforge advises. “This is not the old Carver.” It’s all here, IncludIng lessons from marquIs Walking through more than 450,000 square feet of manufacturing space, one thing is readily apparent: Carver remains a vertically integrated boatbuilder, with a variety of in-house operations that many of its competitors outsourced long ago. Not only does Carver build its own stainless steel molds for stringer systems, it also operates workshops for everything from painting and wiring to cabinets and upholstery. “We’re still boat manufacturers, as opposed to assemblers,” Delforge observes. “We try to do everything ourselves. When you contract things out, you just don’t know what you’re getting.” “It also enables us to be a ‘just in time’ manufacturer,’” Kraning adds. “Every part has a hull number on it. There’s no glut of anything. That keeps our inventory costs down, but it also means we can be light on our feet. We can make changes fast, and if there’s a problem in the field, we can address it immediately.” Also in-house is Carver’s big sister, Marquis Yachts. The development of these large, semicustom luxury yachts has played an important role in Carver’s evolution, despite the fact that the latter is a production builder. “We learned a lot with Marquis, and that absolutely has impacted Carver,” Delforge muses. “The untold story with Marquis is the amount of structure that’s built in, like the aluminum roll cage. It acts like your rib cage, and it creates a rigid hull that won’t sway.” Today’s Carver has its own version of that internal rib cage, with a structural grid incorporating aluminum cabin trusses and aluminum floor truss systems for added strength and rigidity.

This, too, is significant. For many people, the Carver name became synonymous with aft-cabin motoryachts by the 1980s. Over time, Carver’s motoryachts became known for accommodations rather than performance, particularly among East and West Coast boaters who had little to no experience with the Great Lakes and their tempestuous, unpredictable, ocean-like conditions. “That’s one of the things that bugs me the most,” Delforge admits. “People say, ‘Oh, it’s just a lake boat.’ Please tell me what that is. I don’t have those specifications, because there’s no such thing. What I do have is our Class B specifications, and we go beyond the requirements to meet our own expectations.” Class B states that a vessel is built to navigate up to 200 miles offshore, sustain winds up to Force 8 on the Beaufort scale (39-46 mph) and manage rough seas with waves up to 4 meters (approximately 13 feet). Carver has been building boats in the Great Lakes for six decades, and it has stayed true to its roots — its boats are meant to go places, and they’re designed and built to handle serious conditions. “We’re probably [Class] B plus,” Kraning says. “We go beyond the requirements, because we know most owners are not going to be professional captains, and bad weather happens. That extra safety factor helps give people peace of mind.” No such thiNg as compromise With all the talk of performance standards and durability, one might assume that Carver’s focus has shifted away from accommodations. The opposite is true, according to Delforge: There’s no such thing as compromise in today’s marine industry. “You have to have it all and at the right price, because there are so many options,” he explains. “We have to hit all the marks, because if we miss one, the boat buyer goes somewhere else. Common misconceptions are that you’ll give up performance to have certain accommodations, or that you’ll give up performance for styling. But a straight bow doesn’t change the running bottom. We check all the boxes.” Today’s Carver Yachts have large, no-threshold sliding glass doors between the cockpit and salon, creating single, wide-open living spaces and eliminating the need to wrangle canvas. They offer molded steps, well-placed handrails, larger doorways and companionways, functional headroom throughout the interiors, and plenty of beam for stability. “There are no steps, so it’s not like a tightrope act to get up there,” Kraning says. “People love the open

space, the open doors, how we bring the outside in. The C37 Coupe has been a hot boat, because they can’t believe the shower headroom or the fact that it’s not a wet head; it’s a separate shower stall. Because the boat has such deep in-floor storage compartments, you don’t have to use your second stateroom as a junk room for luggage or toys.” The new C52 Command Bridge also has been a hit; it marks a significant step up in terms of design touches, materials and interior spaces, rivaling that of a 55- to 60-foot yacht. For example, this 50-footer has a rare private staircase descending to an impressively large, open master stateroom. The C52 also has fully appointed separate quarters for a single crewmember aft of the engine room. Kraning has it right when he says, “We’re not your father’s Carver anymore.” No kidding. KeepiNg it persoNal Self reinvention hasn’t changed the soul of Carver, however. In the end, as Delforge and Kraning both point out, boatbuilding is not automated. It’s deeply personal. They say all 300 employees bear this in mind on a daily basis. “Our boat owners have our cell phone numbers, and they know all three customer service people on a first-name basis,” Kraning says. “They’re always welcome to come here to see their boats being built, or just to have a tour because they’re interested.” He recalls a buyer who, while on his own plant tour, wanted to put his signature on the hull. Not only did the employees allow that to happen, they clear-coated it so he could keep it. “He was so thrilled,” Kraning says. “The reality is, the day you buy your boat is one of the biggest and most important days of your life. We always honor that.” H

reat work takes time, and this laborious project completed by E.J. Mertaugh Boat Works in Hessel, Michigan, proves just how much attention to detail goes into restoring classic wooden boats. The team at Mertaugh Boat Works transformed this once run-down 1949 Chris-Craft 22 Utility from the hull up into a polished, like-new classic beauty. Here, we walk you through each step of this restoration project.

1. (BEFORE) When the Chris-Craft 22 Utility was ﬁrst brought to E.J. Mertaugh Boat Works, the boat was run-down, with lackluster varnish and aged upholstery. 2. The old, original factory-installed bottom is removed. 3. In its place, a new double bottom is installed using Okoume marine plywood. The inner liner is glued and screwed to new white oak frames, chines and keel.

The mahogany wood on the transom is then sanded, ďŹ lled and faired, along with the hull sides and decks. Necessary repairs are made to the old mahogany planks.

GREAT LAKES STORIES From the depths of the lakes to Civil War cemeteries and tortured lighthouses, the Great Lakes hold many haunted tales. b y Andr e w H i nd

he five inland seas that make up the Great Lakes offer scenery and spectacles aplenty, each new discovery enticing boaters to explore. But there’s also a darker side to them — one that fortunately few experience. Whispers of spectral figures emanate from tragedy and misfortune abound. So next time you’re enjoying the peace and serenity from your boat’s deck, watch out — there might be more lurking in the depths than just fish. Presented here are a few of the more notorious Great Lakes ghost stories.

Located in the middle of storm-tossed Lake Superior, Stannard Rock Lighthouse was once known as the “loneliest place in America.” The Coast Guardsmen tasked with manning the lighthouse were happy to see her close in 1961, and not just because of the mind-numbing boredom and aching loneliness that came with serving there. This lighthouse, you see, is allegedly haunted by a restless spirit that views the tower as his domain and doesn’t tolerate trespassers. Located 44 miles north of Marquette, Michigan, Stannard Rock is a submerged shoal that could tear the bottom out from even the largest ship. Worse, the area is known for strange and powerful magnetic disturbances that disorient a ship’s compass, making sailing through this stretch of water particularly dangerous at night or when fog descends upon the lake. In 1866, the Lighthouse Board stated the shoal presented the “most serious danger to navigation on Lake Superior.” Construction of a lighthouse to mark the location began soon after. When completed in 1882, the 110-foot tower was the most isolated lighthouse in North America. Indeed, several men responsible for tending the light had to be taken off duty due to the maddening loneliness that came from spending weeks at a time surrounded by nothing but water. During the process of automating the light in 1961, there was a gas explosion that killed one man and injured three more. The body of the deceased individual was never found, as he was incinerated in the blast. Since then, the Coast Guardsmen tasked with servicing the light have sworn the lighthouse is haunted; a sense of deep melancholy comes over them, and there is the feeling of being watched. Ethereal footsteps are heard and invisible hands rearrange furniture. Once, several men had to spend the night when a sudden storm made leaving impossible. When they were picked up the next morning they were ashen-faced and swore they would never return due to the horrors they endured.

Johnson’s Island Ghosts During the Civil War, northern armies captured thousands of Confederate soldiers. The Union needed a place to imprison them for the duration of the war, and eventually settled on Johnson’s Island, located 2 miles off the Lake Erie shore near Sandusky, Ohio. As many as 15,000 Confederate soldiers languished here. Johnson’s Island conditions were bleak. The harsh winters, with icy winds howling off the open lake, tormented men who were used to more moderate southern climes. Pneumonia and fevers were rampant. Worse, in retaliation for the poor treatment of northern soldiers in Confederate prisons, rations were often cut, reducing men to walking skeletons. More than 200 men perished during their internment and were buried on the northeast tip of the island. For them, Johnson’s Island is an eternal prison, shackling their souls to perpetual misery on this lonely isle. Visitors speak of an overwhelming sense of dread and sadness here, and all forms of terrifying haunted activity are experienced: Spectral figures flitting through the woods; ghostly whispers; the faint sounds of Dixie drifting on the breeze; the chilled touch of an unseen hand. The dead yearn for a repatriation that will never come. Step ashore at your own risk.

Tug C.C. Martin The very term “ghost ship” conjures up nightmarish images of a spectral vessel emerging from a bank of fog. No one moves about the deck and a silent blanket of morbidity hangs over it. While this might be the product of Hollywood films or tall tales, it accurately describes the eternal torment of C.C. Martin, As the narrative goes, this lifeless vessel has been seen scouring the waters of Georgian Bay for over a century — an omen of ill fortune for those who see her ethereal shape. August 25, 1911, was an unremarkable day, calm and pleasant. Captain George Vent was optimistic that he could deliver his tug, the C.C. Martin, and the Albatross, the barge it towed, to Byng Inlet without incident. He was wrong. The weather took an unexpected turn for the worse. Temperatures plummeted, rain began to fall and the water roiled in anger. Rather than wait out the storm in Pointe au Baril, Capt. Vent pressed on. Soon waves crashed over the deck, and the twin vessels began to flounder. Those aboard Albatross sought safety in a skiff and survived. Those aboard the tug had no such chance, as their lifeboat had broken free. Capt. Vent, his wife and eight crewmembers all perished. The C.C. Martin, does not rest easily beneath the waves, rising occasionally with its undead skipper at the helm. According to the tale, it’s his punishment to sail on into condemned eternity as penance for causing the deaths of the men entrusted to his care. Sailors cringe at the thought of spotting the ghost of this ill-fated vessel, certain that doing so means they will share the same tragic fate as the drowned crew. Was the Atlantic a cursed ship? The passengers and crew aboard her final voyage were given good reason to believe so. Originally known as the Manitoulin, the ship was launched in Owen Sound in 1880. Just two years later at Manitoulin Island, the vessel faced disaster for the first time. On May 18, 1882, the Manitoulin suddenly caught fire. The horrified crew watched helplessly as a fireball spread through the hold and expelled onto the deck. The Manitoulin was grounded on the shore and the crew leapt over her sides into the choppy surf. Sadly, for some it was not in time. Fifteen men were burned alive aboard the Manitoulin; the ship became their charred tomb. It would have been wise to scuttle the burned-out remains and leave the ship and her dead to rest in peace. Instead, her owners salvaged her hulk, rebuilt her and launched the renamed Atlantic that autumn. Seasoned mariners shivered at the thought of renaming a vessel — to do so was to bring a curse down upon it. On November 10, 1903, the Atlantic caught fire again. This time every passenger and crew made it to safety. The Atlantic, charred and lifeless, remained afloat throughout the next day until she finally sank near the Spruce Rocks. The curse continued, however, as neither the ship nor her victims rest easy. For more than a century, people have reported seeing walking corpses dripping with water, stumbling through the surf off Manitoulin Island. Sometimes, eyewitnesses swear the corpses have been blackened by flame — charred by the fires that raced unchecked through the Manitoulin. While the Manitoulin’s doomed crew is bound to the waters in which they met their fate, the same is not true of the ship itself. Her ghostly hull is encountered throughout Georgian Bay. On the moonlit waters, the legendary steamship sails on a voyage without end — a ghostly remnant of a fatal accident many years ago. ★

lovely port city on a curve of land where the Ashtabula River meets Lake Erie, Ashtabula has a charming historic downtown filled with unique shops, galleries and restaurants. For nature lovers, Ashtabula’s city parks and beaches offer options for boating, watersports and fishing. Numerous wineries are nearby, like Debonne Vineyards in Madison, Ohio. This winery has been in operation for 100 years, making it the state’s oldest and largest vineyard. Covered bridges can be found on the winding roads of Ashtabula County. This includes one of the world’s longest covered bridges, the 613-foot-long Smolen-Gulf Bridge, and the shortest in the nation, the 18-foot Liberty Street Bridge. Some of these covered bridges date back to the 1850s, while others are more modern, like the Smolen-Gulf Bridge, which was built in 2008. There used to be more than 60 covered bridges in the county, but many have since been replaced with modern cement and concrete bridges; there are now 18 left in the county, spread out over the three cities of Ashtabula, Geneva and Conneat and the county’s seven villages. To celebrate the covered bridges that remain, the Ashtabula County Covered Bridge Festival in October (this year October 8-9) features a parade, a car show and bridge tours.

In the late 19th century, Ashtabula Harbor was the busiest port on the Great Lakes, shipping large quantities of coal and iron. The bustling shipping port became a hub for immigrants from Finland, Sweden and Italy. A melting pot of nationalities, Ashtabula Harbor in the 1800s held the rather dubious honor — along with Calcutta and Shanghai — of being one of the most raucous ports in the world. Oh, what a difference a century or so makes. The city’s famous Ashtabula Lift Bridge, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, welcomes you into port. The revitalized Bridge Street District’s commercial Victorian-era buildings, which in rowdier days housed bustling bordellos and the toughest of dive bars, have been renovated and replaced with hip, mainstream tenants like Marianne’s Chocolates. This purveyor of handcrafted sweets is known for its bestselling dark chocolate sea salt bark, dark chocolate sea salt caramels and kettle-fresh small batch candies like milk chocolate turtles.

Once a butcher shop owned by Thomas Rennick and his family from 1889 to 1962, the mantra at Rennick Meat Market — a farm-to-table restaurant housed in the same building and honoring its past — is “butcher inspired American food.” Seasonal appetizers include deep fried beets, cheddar cheese curds, poutine (the Canadian dish of French fries topped with gravy) and Kobe corndogs with house-made ketchup. There are, of course, a variety of cuts from ribeye to the lesser known bavette — comparable to flank steak but more tender. Need a jolt of caffeine? Harbor Perk has just the thing: Roasted and brewed on-site specialty coffees such as lattes and cappuccinos, as well as teas, smoothies and locally-made pastries. Call it lake effect: With its long stretch of Lake Erie shoreline and rich soil, Ashtabula County creates a microclimate perfect for growing high-quality grapes. The county produces 75 percent of all the grapes grown in Ohio and is the only designated American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the state. Once a major producer of Concord grapes used in making jams, jellies and juice, the 25 wineries located in the county now grow a sophisticated range of grapes perfect for making merlot, chardonnay, syrah, pinot, Riesling and dessert wines. “We have fantastic winemakers here,” says Nancy Camp, who with her husband owns Barrels & Bridges Tours. “The nice thing is they’re not pretentious at all; they’re just very nice people making great wine.” Camp says they offer several wine tours that combine history with tastings, including 4- or 5-hour trips that visit four to seven wineries and cross several historic covered bridges. No matter what your palate is, there’s a grape for every taste. “If you like sweet Kool-Aid wines, we’ve got them,” says Stephanie Siegel, executive director of Ashtabula County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. “If you like very dry reds, we have those too. Our wineries aren’t just places to come and sample, they also offer a lot of events.” Take in the view from above at Debonne Vineyards; their signature summer tethered hot

air balloon rides lift you up 50 to 70 feet in the air. In June, the vineyard also hosts the Hot Air Balloon Night Glow and Rally where you can enjoy dinner underneath illuminated hot air balloons and float in untethered balloons. The small downtown Park Avenue Winery is open year-round and produces less that 110 cases of wine each year. Sample their wines while sitting on the patio of the renovated historic home. The cheese plates and flatbreads on the menu pair well with the wine.

Fish stories

The significance behind Ashtabula’s name continues today: It’s an Algonquin Indian term meaning “River of many fish.” Depending on the season, the waters of Ashtabula River and Lake Erie abound with yellow perch, steelhead, walleye and bass, says Bill Hill, owner of Compensator Fishing Charters and captain of the Compensator, a 30-foot Baha cruiser. Hill offers 8-hour fishing trips on Lake Erie’s Central Basin. “The walleye fishing is excellent,” says Hill. “This area really is the Walleye Capital of the World.” Michael Frey, owner and captain of Bite Me Sportfishing, also runs daylong trips that typically depart at the break of dawn into what he describes as “walleye-rich waters.” “We’re in a very calm area back here; the fishing is good,” says Roy Skinner, vice commander of Riverside Yacht Club on the Ashtabula River.

Hop aboard a fishing charter, including Sturgeon General Charters, at Kister Marina. Located on the Ashtabula River just south of the Bascule Lift Bridge, Kister Marina features gated entry, parking within 20 feet of your boat, water and electricity at each dock, and new camper sites. Four charters, including Bite Me, operate out of Ashtabula Recreation Unlimited (ARU). ARU also offers 120 campsites, dry storage for your boat and six launch ramps. “In the fall, you can fish for walleye, perch and steelhead right here on the river,” says ARU manager Tony Ellis.

The great outdoors

With jewel-like beaches stretching along the Lake Erie shore, there are plenty of places for sun, water and fun. “Walnut Beach has a great sandy beach with lots of space to set up your beach chairs and spread out your beach towels,” says Siegel, noting the park also has a waterfowl pond where white mute swans and mallards come to rest. Walnut Beach amenities include a playground,

volleyball courts, bocce courts, picnic tables and a short boardwalk. Another bonus is the pretty view of Ashtabula’s historic lighthouse. Open year-round, the 18-hole disc golf course, boat launch, bait shop, bocce court and swimming beach are popular features at Lakeshore Park. The 54-acre park has five on-site pavilions, making it a great venue for family outings.

Becoming unmoored

Ashtabula offers a plethora of activities and events, but for those docked at marinas, the issue may be getting there. “One of our members will usually loan out his car so a boater can get groceries and other supplies,” says Skinner. “We’re close enough to downtown, so people staying at the [ARU] marina can walk,” says Ellis. Camp says that they offer pick-up services for those going on their wine and covered bridge tours at whichever hotel or marina they are staying at. Ashtabula County Transportation System (ACTS) provides door-to-door service for those traveling anywhere in the county. Call 24 hours ahead to schedule.

Culture hub

There’s a wide spectrum of creative endeavors at the Ashtabula Arts Center, which offers classes, performances and activities in the areas of dance, theater, music and visual arts. The Arts Center has been a part of the community for 60 years, offering programs for all ages and levels of artistic talent. It also hosts workshops in pottery, painting, wood working, knitting and screen painting. Bridge Street Art Works, a co-op of local artists, sells creations such as jewelry, painted furniture, pottery and home décor. The fine art co-op also hosts classes and gallery displays. The city celebrates its natural artwork during the annual Ashtabula Harbor Beach Glass Festival each June. The two-day festival highlights local artists, the beautiful harbor and handmade jewelry. Built in 1871 and once the home of the light keepers and Coast Guard chiefs, the Ashtabula Maritime Museum in Walnut Park displays artifacts such as vintage photos of Ashtabula during its heyday as a shipping port, paintings, navigational equipment and tools.

For those really into this kind of thing, another great feature at the museum is the world’s only working-scale model of a Hulett Ore Unloading Machine. The museum is in the planning stages of a $5 million addition. The future 7,000-square-foot building will house much-needed additional space for permanent and traveling exhibits, educational programs and special events. Ashtabula was once the site for several stops along the Underground Railroad. One of those stops was at the Hubbard House, which has been made into a museum located in Walnut Park. The museum tells the story of the Hubbard family, who helped escaping slaves find their way to freedom by hiding in the home’s basement.

At the pet-friendly Brant’s Apple Orchard, October is the time for fall harvest activities like cider making and apple picking. Brant’s grows 22 varieties of apples and offers anything and everything related to the fruit: Caramel apples, apple cider donuts, cider slushies, pies, turnovers, muffins, cooking demonstrations, hay wagon rides and more. Have you ever wanted to dine in a covered bridge? Order a pie and enjoy the view at Covered Bridge Pizza Parlor, made from restored pieces of the historic Foreman Road Covered Bridge. Ashtabula County boasts more than 100 restaurants. It may be hard to choose, so follow the Locavore Trail for a taste of what’s best. During the summer of 1996, I was driving to work when I noticed an old wooden Century boat sitting in a farmer’s field in Seville, Ohio. It had weathered to light grey and was partially covered with a tattered blue tarp, but was nestled quite comfortably amongst the cows and chickens in the field. I approached the farmer to ask him if he would be interested in selling his boat, but no luck — he did not want to part with it. I have always had an interest in wooden boats; my dad built a 14-foot plywood boat from a kit when I was a kid and would take my brother and I fishing on Lake Erie. When I saw the grey boat in the field, I knew I had to have it. Every few months, I would stop in and talk to the farmer, but he still wasn’t ready to sell it. Finally, after two years he agreed to sell me the boat. I put it in storage for about a year, during which time I joined the Century Boat Club and ACBS Northcoast Chapter Boat Club. I attended workshops and seminars to gain the knowledge and advice I would need to do a proper restoration on my newfound boat. After doing research on the Century Boat Company, I was able to determine my boat was built in 1942 with hull number 4207 and the model being a Seamaid. Less then 60 of these boats were built in 1942 and less then 12 remain to date. Only four of these boats have been restored and are on the show circuit. My wife, June, and I spent 10 years restoring our 1942 Century Seamaid named Double Barrel. We enjoy taking it on Lake Erie cruises and entering it in national shows. It’s a real head turner!
