The layout provides plenty of room for four below without compromising space, comfort or features topside. With U-shaped cockpit seating, a wide swim platform, an optional hardtop and a spacious bow, you won’t want to leave.

elcome to autumn: To crisp air, prismatic leaves and savoring every last minute out on the water. This new season is an ideal time to grab your tools and start brushing up on your DIY skill sets. Do you have an unpleasantly aromatic head? Outdated LED lights? Dull teak or faded antifouling paint? Out expert columnists provide DIY tips for this renovation season (pgs. 24-27). Serving as an example of an arduous yet rewarding renovation is the H.R.H Lola: A 1977 Hatteras that was beautifully restored by the team at Anthony Michael Interior Design and Elite Yachts (p. 40). Assistant editor Sarah Kollmorgen and I attended the launch party in June to see this renovated yacht for ourselves. This classic yet modern transformation reinterprets nautical design and may inspire you to refresh your boat’s interior. One of the greatest blessings the Midwest affords is its autumnal colors. Watch trees change hues in the charming city of Grand Marais, Minnesota this fall (p. 50). Located on Lake Superior’s north shore, this port offers a respite for cruisers — a sort of oasis amidst the rocky shoreline. The city has the oldest art community in Minnesota, abundant natural beauty, alfresco dining and plenty of hiking trails. If the thought of the impending cold makes you shiver, consider taking a trip aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin to French Polynesia for a few weeks (p. 44). This luxury cruise line offers an opportunity to explore stunning islands from a local’s perspective while gaining cultural knowledge of the area and the artist whom the boat is named after. Start dreaming up renovation projects and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty! Do you have a story idea you’d like to suggest? Email me at kbush@lakelandboating.com to share your ideas.

Ohio Sea Grant to Study Lake Erie Algal Blooms

Dr. Justin Chaffin, research scientist for The Ohio State University’s Stone Lab and Ohio Sea Grant, along with partners across Ohio and Michigan, has received funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to study what causes Lake Erie algal blooms to become toxic. The study, which will incorporate both computer modeling and hands-on laboratory experiments, is focused on providing more guidance to water utilities on when they should plan to treat drinking water for algal toxins. The NOAA grant of $248,413 supports the first year of this new research project, part of an anticipated total $749,525 pending availability of future agency funding. The project is funded through the Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms research program, administered by the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science in NOAA’s National Ocean Service. 142 Million Americans Went Boating in 2016

The numbers have been tallied, and a recent study has found that a grand total of 142 million Americans went boating in 2016 — that’s 36 percent of all U.S. households. The 2016 Recreational Boating Participation Study, released by the National Marine Manufacturers Association, Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation and Discover Boating this summer, found that of the total, 17 million were first-time boaters. The study had a number of other interesting findings, such as: Active boaters spend an average of 71.5 hours per season boating; 95 percent of boaters spend time with friends or family while out on the water; and the median age for first-time boating experiences was 12 — these individuals are more likely to remain active boaters. Downeast – Cr afted in Maine

The New Sabre 45 Salon Express

S

abre Yachts introduces the Sabre 45 Salon Express, the latest addition to the Salon Express range which

DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier

Adios, Odors D

oes your boat stink? If so, the culprit is likely your boat’s head. It was cool to be funky back in the 1970s (and some of us still are, thank you very much), but funky smells have no business on today’s boats. Let’s disco down and check out 10 ways to improve the odoriferous vibe of your boat’s head. 1. Leaks are one of the most common sources of head odors. Start at one end of your sanitation system and check each hose joint for leaks, ensuring all hose clamps are tight and corrosion free. Install double hose clamps where possible, but only if you have sufficient hose barb to allow it; otherwise you’ll simply be crushing or cutting the hose, causing even more leaks.

Head hose sewage bulge

2. Check your system and hose runs for places where raw sewage can collect. Hose runs should be kept as short and straight as possible. Holding tank discharge hoses should also be Even duct tape won’t reduce the smell of a self-draining (i.e. deck pumpout fitting permeated sanitation hose. hoses should drain back into the holding tank without loops or low spots). 3. One of the more unsanitary practices found aboard boats are showers that drain directly into the bilge. This setup not only generates odors, but also introduces the bilge to pump-clogging hair and soap scum. A common aftermarket solution is to put a gravity-fed sump beneath the shower pan, which collects the water and automatically pumps it overboard. If you have a shower sump box, check to make sure it’s working. An inoperative sump will likely be full CAPT. FRANK LANIER of water, which can contribute to head odors. Remove the is an award-winning journalist, sump cover at least annually to clean the strainer, check the boat maintenance guru and float switch for proper operation, and check all electrical owner of Capt F.K. Shock your holding tank at least once a year (spring and Consultants ( CAPTFKLANIER.COM ). or fall) to de-scale the inside and flush the system. Shock

treatments (such as Head-O-Matic’s Shock Treat) help prevent odor buildup and can also be used a second time if odors are noted mid-season. It’s also recommended to shock the tank when you haul your boat out for the winter. Add Shock Treatment a week or so before the last pumpout (while still using the boat), to allow the treatment to slosh around in the holding tank and help de-scale the tank for the winter. This also helps ensure a clean pumpout. 5. Change your hoses. Sewage can permeate old sanitation hoses, releasing bad smells aplenty. To see if your hose is permeated, wipe a section with a warm, damp cloth, drop it into a Ziploc bag, carry it above deck into fresh air, then open the bag and give a sniff. Always use a proper sanitation hose when installing or replacing old hoses, including vent hoses. Premium rubber sanitation hoses have a thicker wall and feature two-ply reinforcement and a wire helix. It may sound like overkill, but just remember it has to handle human waste that’s roughly 30 times more concentrated than typical residential sewage. 6. It’s a fact: The more excrement you have around, the worse things smell. Pumpout your holding tank early and often, well before it’s full. 7. Check the holding tank vent line regularly for blockages. Mud-daubers and other such insects love to build nests in them. If the tank is filled to overflowing, bits of sewage can clog the vent line. A clogged vent hose not only promote smells, but can also damage your system due to pressure build-up each time the head is flushed. A clogged vent also creates negative pressure when pumping out, which can cause damage and possible collapse of the holding tank. When possible, back flush the vent each time you pumpout to ensure it stays open and clear. 8. Rebuild your toilet (new gaskets, seals, valves and impellers) based on the manufacturer’s recommended timeframe and before leaks occur. The soft parts of your toilet will eventually dry out and become brittle, which leads to cracks and leaks. Replacing these parts on your own terms, before they have a chance to fail, eliminates a boat owner’s number one nightmare: Toilet failure. It never happens at a good time. 9. Flush the head sufficiently to push all sewage from the hoses and rinse behind it. How much extra flushing do you need? Two strokes per every foot of discharge hose is a common rule of thumb. If you’re worried about filling the holding tank too soon, clear the hose once at the end of the day or before leaving the boat. 10. Clean your head after each trip. Cleaning sinks, counters, and the areas around and behind the toilet with disinfecting wipes or other such cleaners will leave the loo smelling clean and ready for your next adventure. ★

ELECTRONICS by Glenn Hayes

Give it a Glow

There’s an excellent selection of LED lights for boaters. Be sure to use quality lights for trouble-free years of operation.

Updating your boat’s LED lights.

A

great way to update your boat and give it a new glow is to replace your traditional incandescent lighting with new bright and efficient LED lights. LED lighting has many advantages over incandescent lighting, and there’s an ever-increasing variety of bulbs and fixtures to choose from. However, not all LEDs are the same. Take caution while selecting LED lights to avoid disappointment and even the possibility of a citation from the Coast Guard.

PHOTOS BY GLENN HAYES

The science behind LEDs Today’s LEDs are extremely efficient and are able to cast a much brighter light at a fraction of the power consumption of incandescent lights. LEDs are able to do this by passing electric current through a silicon junction of semiconductor layers. When electricity is applied to the LED, electrons in the semiconductor layers are attracted to each other and produce photons, creating the light you see. LED manufacturers make products that may look similar but might be manufactured in different ways and with different materials. This can affect the quality and intensity of the light. High-end LEDs can be made with silicon carbide and are capable of producing a bright light that is a noticeable improvement upon older manufacturing methods. The light produced by LEDs is usually measured in lumens: The amount of light being output per watt of power. Generally, the higher the lumen number, the brighter the light. As technology has advanced, so has the lumen count of some LEDs. Another measurement that’s sometimes used to describe the output of an LED is lux: The intensity of the light as perceived by the human eye. Most marine lights sold today will show a lumen count on their packaging. It’s important to remember that numbers can sometimes be misrepresentative; the best way to ensure the light you are considering buying is bright enough is to power it up and see for yourself. If this is not possible in-store, make sure you know the return policy prior to purchase. Other considerations LEDs use much less electricity than incandescent lights and do not contain environmentally harmful materials that can be found in some incandescent bulbs. They can get warm but generally will not heat up like some traditional bulbs, which eliminate wasted heat energy and can be a potential fire hazard. LEDs can last 40,000 to 50,000

hours — the equivalent of 24 hours of operation for eight years. Because of their tiny size and high output, LEDs can be mounted just about anywhere; are unaffected by vibration and humidity; and are particularly well-suited for the tight environment found on-board most boats. Replacing incandescent lights with LEDs is a great energy saver. Updating anchor, deck and utility lights is particularly useful if you are on the hook and wanting to save battery power. When selecting LED lighting, make sure it’s marinegrade and suitable for the environment it will be mounted in. Are the lights designed as interior or exterior lights? Exterior lights should have sealed circuit boards and be made of corrosion- and UV-resistant materials. Does the lighting have adequate heat dissipation if it’s very bright, such as spreader lights or spotlights? Better heat dissipation equates to a longer trouble-free life. If you are just replacing incandescent bulbs and retaining the existing fixture, make sure the output and light cast are adequate. Depending on how the LED elements are laid out within the bulb, the light cast from the fixture may not be in a pattern that works as intended. If replacing the bulb in navigation lights, be sure the new LED bulb will meet Coast Guard requirements, or else you could end up with a citation. This is also true when replacing the whole navigation light fixture. Boat owners have also been cited due to LED accent lights being installed in a manner that hinders the visibility of navigation lights. Make sure any accent or utility lights do not interfere with the light output of your navigation lights. By selecting quality lights from a reputable manufacturer, you can enjoy safe, bright and efficient lighting that will give your boat a new look and glow. ★

(Above) It’s important to know how bright your new LED lighting will be. Test if you can; if not, make sure there’s a good return policy. (Left) This quality LED light made by Lumitec is designed for use in harsh environments.

SAFETY FIRST by Helen Aitken

Swim Lessons Safe boating with non-swimmers. 1

S

PHOTOS COURTESY OF HELEN AITKEN

even-year-old Milena from North Carolina can’t swim. Her parents, Jennifer and Michael Loper, are good swimmers but are hesitant to take her on their boat without proper swim training. They don’t want her to be afraid of the water and want her to get used to wearing a life jacket. The Lopers also want to prepare Milena for what she should do if she ends up in the water. “I know how to swim but I don’t know how to teach her,” says Jennifer. Most people associate water with swimming and may assume that being a boater means you can swim, right? Maybe not. Do you ask your passengers if they can swim before coming on-board? What do you do if they can’t swim or don’t swim well? Certified swimming instructor Jolene Leverett from Swansboro, North Carolina uses instruction time to introduce her students to wearing life jackets in and out of the water. The common fear of non-swimmers is that the life jacket won’t work properly. She instructed Milena to put her hands on the life jacket shoulder straps while jumping in to help keep the life jacket in place when hitting the water. Reduce the risks associated with taking non-swimming children or adults on-board with a few precautions, including wearing life jackets. Coast Guard regulations Modern life jackets are made of closed-cell foam, which does not absorb water and is designed to float. Children under 13 years old must wear life jackets on a boat at all times. Like wearing seat belts, consistent use establishes a normal routine despite complaints of being uncomfortable or “looking stupid.” Different life jackets have different functions. For smaller children, Leverett recommends using a life jacket with a strap between the legs: “The strap not only ensures that the child doesn’t slip out of the life jacket, but it also helps keep it from riding up around the child’s neck. When I teach the water baby class, I have more interaction with the parents, and I tell them about the purpose of different flotation devices. I try to educate them on how to look for a proper fit for their child.” Reduce the “fear factor” Non-swimmers should try on the correct size and type of life jacket, adjust the straps to fit, and then walk into shallow water. This will help reduce the fear of going underwater. Gradually move to deeper water and repeat the process until acclimated.

2

“I show them that they may go underwater, but they will bounce to the surface,” Leverett says. “Then I have them hold the life jacket around the neck so it won’t ride up towards their head. Don’t panic Leverett repeated the phrase “keep calm” when working with Milena. In practice and in the water, there may be anxious moments. “You’d hate for them to jump [into the water] and panic,” Leverett says. “In the water, parents need to be within an arm’s length away.” Even for adults, having a buddy in the water is reassuring. “I would also show them how much fun it is to float in the water with a friend who can remind them how the life jacket will keep them safe.”

1. Instructor Jolene Leverett teaches Milena Loper how to wear a life jacket.

Swimming instructor tips “Start slow and make it fun,” Leverett says. “If the child is in a class, praise them for any attempt at getting comfortable in the water.” When working with an instructor, let him/her guide and correct the swimmer’s behaviors. Later on, a parent should reinforce the instruction, not disrupt a lesson or counteract it.

Best advice “Having basic swim skills, such as floating, being able to move through the water, and treading water are important for everyone — especially if going boating,” Leverett says. “Starting young with swim lessons is best, but you’re never too old to take swim lessons.” Check for swim lessons in your area or look for Red Cross programs that teach basic water safety. Ask pool attendants for life jackets; otherwise, bring a properly fitted one to the pool and practice. Lastly, the captain is responsible for ensuring the safety of his passengers, alerting BoatU.S. and Sea Tow passengers to the location of all safety have life jacket loaner equipment, and encouraging passengers programs found at many to wear life jackets. Providing instructions ramps and marinas. Find before leaving the dock is prudent because one to borrow at BOATUS. there may not be time to do so in an ORG and SEATOW.COM. emergency. ★

Azimut 50 Fly

O

n of the more notable sport yacht design changes in the past decade has been to move the galley up closer to salon seating. The Italian boatbuilder Azimut, recognizing this demand in the American market, has taken the popular 50 Fly and moved the galley up to where the conversation is most likely to take place while entertaining. A laundry and pantry now occupy the galley’s former space down below. “We are seeing many customers return to overnight and destination cruising,” says Keith Teynor of MarineMax Port Clinton. “A number of our owners are using the boat year-round; summers on the Great Lakes, then taking their yacht south to Florida and back the next spring.” The open flybridge and bow sunpad take full advantage of the sun. Loungers, sunpads, sculpted seating, hand-stitched patterns and solid wood tables create a luxurious living space on the upper flybridge with an elevated view of the seas ahead. You can equip the flybridge with a refrigerator, icemaker, sink, electric grill and flat screen TV — every luxurious comfort you can imagine. Azimut even left the aft half of the flybridge open for lounge chairs or a hydraulic davit with space for a shore launch craft. Another welcome change is the helm seating. The lower

Seating behind the captain has a layout typically found on much larger, spacious yachts. Panoramic windows wrap around the salon, and a near full-beam sliding glass door brings the outside in, extending the social zone from the expansive outdoor U-shaped sofa forward into the salon. The hull is left untouched — its alleged near perfect balance yields an incredible ride. For added insurance on days when fair seas are elusive, this reinvented 50 Fly includes a Seakeeper stabilizer. Coupled with twin 670-hp Volvo D-11 engines, maximum speed is well into the low 30-knot range, and cruising speed is a very respectable 26 knots. With overnight accommodations for six, a master stateroom and private head, a VIP stateroom and guest head, and far too many options to mention, the 2018 Azimut 50 Fly is a floating water view terrace that stimulates a desire to explore, escape the routine and maybe even brush up on your Italian: Sei bellissima — you are very beautiful. ★

oaters are returning to overnights but still want the dayboating, “hose and go” conveniences, according to new research from Boston Whaler. Meet the new 350 Realm, a brand-new category of boat, blending the best designs of Whaler’s Vantage, Conquest and Outrage series. Powered by triple 350-hp Mercury Verados, this 35-foot, 6-inch LOA platform offers optional joystick docking control, an optional 12V DC Seakeeper 3 stabilizer system and an optional telescoping aft SureShade. Transformational bow seating includes a bow bench seat and a triple lounger complete with armrests, integrated drink holders and room for a cocktail table. Accessed via a portside companionway, this arrangement provides extra headroom below in the cabin, which includes an enclosed head and shower, and opposing seating that converts into a berth. A deluxe two-person, electric-slide helm bench swivels 180 degrees to face a second row (or backseat). The second seatback bolster transforms into an aft-facing mezzanine seat complete with flip-down teak footrests. The height easily clears sightlines over the outboard engine cowlings,

and creates a social focal point, especially when the foldout transom bench seat is deployed. Creative use of space is evident under the mezzanine seat, which raises up for easy loading of a 230-quart, built-in Dometic refrigerator/cooler. An acrylic, double hinged access door at ankle level permits quick access to your favorite ice-cold beverage. There is another cooler next to the captain at arm’s length. Our test boat was equipped with a standard Kenyon electric grill next to the mezzanine seat. A designed Corian countertop pops up and swivels to the starboard side, offering much needed counter space for food prep. Safety switches ensure the grill cannot be accidently turned on with the cover in place. In-floor dual fish boxes and a well laid out bilge for sea strainers, a generator and Seakeeper access, are done in true Whaler efficiency. Even the angle of the strainers was thought out to address the growing problem with zebra mussels. “Everything you see on the 350 Realm is the result of customer input,” says Charlie Foss, Whaler design manager. “They wanted style and sophistication with class; we designed a new type of boat that delivers purposeful comfort.” ★

MJM Yachts 35z Fast, quiet, space-age technology.

W

hen a new boat comes along that defies categorization, discerning skippers often become disciples for the brand. MJM Yachts, known for offering individualistic designs, bring its envelope-pushing, epoxy composite construction techniques to outboards with the radiant 35z powerboat. Twin Mercury Verado 300s, rather than the triples used in competing designs, boast a cruising speed of 38 mph, delivering a fuel-sipping range of 350 miles — and that’s on a 250-gallon fuel tank. MJM achieves this combination of performance and comfortable, all-weather family boating through a unique wet prepreg, post-cure epoxy composite construction that results in a stronger, lighter and longer-lasting hull. Epoxy-impregnated Kevlar and E-glass composite construction, Core-Cell foam interiors, and encapsulated stringers and bulkheads are vacuum bagged. This process all but eliminates environmentally harmful volatile organic compounds (VOC) usually associated with traditional layup. All the parts are “baked” at 145 degrees for 24 hours, maximizing the chemical reaction curing process. A narrower 3.5:1 length to beam ratio is a hallmark of revered

naval architect Doug Zern, who pioneered the modified deep-V hull with the composite wizardry of Boston BoatWorks. This hull shape creates seakindly stability. The faster the boat goes, lifting strakes and chine flats redirect wave and wake energy. Even at 50 mph there is a noticeable absence of chine-walk. “This sophisticated performance and finite attention to every detail is what appeals to our yachtsmen clientele,” says Walstrom Marine’s Rick Venner. “Joystick performance, outstanding response, a flush helmdeck, and the ability for the boat to provide overnight accommodations make for a very attractive package.” Side boarding doors, a flush deck stern to companionway, and fully- opening windshields for fresh air create a sense of openness on deck. Owners can choose between roll-up Strataglass or sliding safety glass sides. An enclosed head, galley and modest overnight accommodations are found forward; the pilothouse doubles as a second cabin at night with settees converting into two full-length berths. Add in the optional Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer, full-length Bimini and HVAC for a more comfortable ride. Designed for versatility and exceptional performance, the MJM 35z is eco-smart and a natural fit for the Great Lakes. ★

here’s one boat in every marina that’s party central, and Sea Ray’s all new SLX 400 is that boat. Dubbed “The Entertainer” and winner of a prestigious 2017 NMMA Innovation Award, this boat would impress even James Bond. There are hidden buttons everywhere that actuate features, making you appear totally in control, and allowing you to see to every whim of your 22 guests so they feel right at home. Cue the 007 music. The star of the show is a fold-down swim terrace that opens 90 degrees to expand the cockpit all the way to the water. One moment it’s part of the cockpit sidewall, and in seconds it transforms the boat into a waterside dance floor. The transom sunpad is cast in a supporting role. Clearly designed by a mechanical engineer with a secret desire to be a contortionist, the backrest swings 90 degrees and opens to face the swim terrace. The seatbacks transform into a chaise lounge, inviting you to soak up the sun, look up at the stars when anchored out in a secluded cove, or simply ponder life. If the sun is too intense, press another button and the

retractable SureShade deploys from the hardtop. All of this button-pushing will work up a thirst; thankfully, Sea Ray owners are never far from a refreshment center. A well-appointed wetbar includes refrigerator, sink, optional dual grills and, of course, ample drawer space, all tucked along the starboard wall right behind the helm. More “wows” await the skipper. An intuitive Digital Dash combined with Axius joystick control allow even a novice boater to look like a pro when docking. At the bow, a row of forward touring seats feature armrests and cupholders, and additional forward benches surround a sleek, removable bow table, which also converts into a sunpad. When the last guest departs, you can slip below deck into an air-conditioned or heated cabin. The aft berth is queen-size, and the salon becomes a V-berth with little effort. No need to worry about crawling out of bed to turn off the boat’s blue LED mood lighting; the Sea Ray SLX 400 has the option to sync up to your iPad or smartphone to control lighting and the stereo, or to plot waypoints for tomorrow’s getaway. ★

f you select a company name like Absolute, you better be prepared to live up to it. Since 2002, the Italian boatbuilder has done just that. Using cutting-edge designs and a state-of-the-art construction process, Absolute has created an innovative family of luxury yachts that command attention at the dock. The Absolute 40 Sport Line (STL), the smallest of the Absolute Yachts family, defines the word “versatility.” It would be easy to call it a dayboat, but the designers at Absolute made such efficient use of available space that the boat also qualifies as a comfortable, capable weekender. The layout provides plenty of room for four below without compromising space, comfort or features topside — and topside is where you’ll want to be.

OUTER SPACE

The boat was obviously designed with outer space in mind. The U-shaped cockpit seating can comfortably accommodate eight or more, while the topside kitchen to port contains a grill, fridge, ice maker, sink and plenty of storage hidden below a stylish lid. Meals and drinks are easy to prepare and serve without having to leave the main deck. The cockpit on the 40 STL feels as open and easy to navigate as a waterfront cottage’s patio. Wide companionways provide boarding access from the swim platform to the huge sundecks waiting at the bow and stern. The aft deck also hides plenty of storage space. Electric rams lift the entire rear hatch, exposing plenty of room for dockside power cords, fenders, extra lines and water toys. The Absolute 40 STL provides abundant seating and accommodations for sun-seekers, and the teak deck and folding table provide attractive accents to the already beautiful design. The swim platform is easy to access from either side,

although the port companionway leads directly aft from the main seating area. A folding swim ladder built into the platform makes departure and reentry from the water a breeze. The boat looks sporty with or without the optional hardtop; however, the top provides cover without affecting airflow through the cockpit and seems like a smart choice. With the top installed, passengers can choose to sit in the shade with a book or lie in the sun with a cold drink on one of the padded sundecks. An optional Bimini and full canvas enclosure are also available, as is fill-in canvas for the hardtop. The boat comes with covers for the seating, table, kitchen and dash, which make take-off and landing simple and quick with the hardtop. Although the Bimini allows for a true open-air configuration, the hardtop makes the Bimini seem like extra work when a quick launch is desired.

INNER LIGHT

Although people will want to stay in orbit around the main deck, there’s much more to the boat hidden below. Two small steps (or one giant leap) into the cabin lands passengers in front of a simple but full-featured galley, which includes a cooktop and a second, larger refrigerator. The galley is unobtrusive, especially since your eyes are immediately drawn to the huge hullside windows and the views they provide. The abundance of natural light pouring into the forward cabin through the port and starboard windows make the oak-accented space feel huge. There’s enough room at the dinette for four to six people to enjoy a meal if the weather forces everyone inside. The dinette also converts into a double bed to provide roomy sleeping quarters for a second couple or for the kids. To starboard, a full-size, fully-equipped head and stand-up shower includes an adjustable, handheld wand and Tecma toilet. The head also provides a dry space separated from the shower

ª by a folding acrylic door. This space has plenty of storage and room to stand at the vanity while preparing for a night in port. Hidden below the cockpit is a pleasant surprise, which again showcases Absolute’s efficient and innovative use of space. Just aft of the forward salon is a full width, mid-cabin master stateroom, which includes a full-size double bed and lounge seat on the port side. The master suite is half-height to preserve the boat’s stylish lines, which allows for generous sleeping quarters to be included where an engine room might normally be expected. Although the cabin is not tall enough to stand, sitting upright on the bed leaves plenty of room overhead. Again, huge hullside windows provide abundant light and make the cabin feel like a much larger space. The windows also present a beautiful water view. “The 40 Sport Line is a great weekend and family boat,” says Andy MacLachlan, sales professional at Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales. “It’s the only boat in its class with such versatile accommodations.”

ROCKET SHIP

The helm feels like a natural continuation of the entertainment area. Flip-up bolsters and a teak toe rail make it comfortable to sit or stand at the wheel, where chrome accented analog gauges surround the Raymarine navigation system. Well-placed controls for every system — from the Fusion stereo to the anchor windlass — are all within easy reach. The Absolute 40 STL features twin 330-hp Volvo Penta D6 diesel engines coupled to Duoprop outdrives, but still includes a joystick control. The computerized system makes docking and low-speed maneuvering simple and intuitive, and also makes bigger boats less imposing. The 40 STL is easy to handle in tight spaces and slides backward into a slip with ease.

With the Volvo D6 engines, the 40 STL lifts off with enough power to pull a skier or a couple of kids on a tube. The boat is surprisingly quick for a 40-foot, 20,000-pound vessel and handles like the name implies — sporty. The boat will comfortably cruise at 30 knots and will touch 40 with the throttles wide open.

CONTROL ROOM

The engine room is accessed through a door beneath the starboard cockpit cushions. Even though entry through the access panel is a little tight and climbing down the ladder feels you are like entering the Lunar Lander, the mechanical components were surprisingly accessible given how well they’re hidden, making DIY fluid checks and maintenance possible. All of the boat’s mechanical systems are easily accessed and can be removed or replaced without invasive disassembly. Absolute provides, in its own words, “the highest level of structural integrity” through a construction process known as the Integrated Structural System. Absolute’s design teams also create some of the smoothest riding hulls on the water today.

TOUCHDOWN

At the dock, the distinctly Italian lines of the Absolute 40 STL attract plenty of attention. People constantly stop and ask to board the boat, and are surprised by the extra accommodations below. The boat has a fluid appearance that seemingly pulls at the dock lines, as if it’s ready to launch the moment you cast off. Absolute’s founders began the company with a clear mission: To build boats without compromising quality, craftsmanship, performance or style. It would be easy to say they aimed for the moon, but spend an afternoon on-board the Absolute 40 STL and you’ll believe they hit the mark. ★

itting on the L-shaped bench in the cockpit of the new NC 895 — a modern and stylish family cruiser from French boatbuilder Jeanneau — I could not ignore the sudden increase in rpm and boat speed that pressed me back into the cushion. I had just finished putting the NC 895 through her paces on the water, gathering performance data and evaluating handling, and then dutifully handed her over to another member of our party who wanted to do a few handling tests of his own. We were cruising at a high speed in the mouth of the South River, which opens into Chesapeake Bay just south of Annapolis, Maryland, when the helmsman punched the bow into the leading edge of a big powerboat’s wake. The NC 895 knifed right through it and caught the second wake right behind it roughly amidships. Reentry wasn’t so much a shock as an auditory event — the kind of momentary bang you might expect when crossing a tall, tightly compacted wake at a higher than normal speed. During and after the event, there were several key things to notice. Sitting just ahead of the twin Yamaha F200 four-stroke outboards, the sound levels in the cockpit were amazingly quiet when compared with the 200-hp two-stroke outboards of just a decade ago. These engines push the boat to a 44 mph top speed and a cruising speed of 27 mph. At the moment of impact, the aft bench seat was stable and close to the water, and I was not at all tossed around. The NC 895 maintained a side-to-side level attitude and recovered its smooth ride almost immediately after reentry.

A quick look inside showed nothing out of place, no locker doors or drawers were open, and there were no unexpected rattles. From the standpoint of engineering and construction, it was a most impressive event, but not unexpected. Jeanneau has been building power and sailboats since the inception of the company in Les Herbiers, France in 1957. As a member of Groupe Beneteau, Jeanneau continues the tradition of building solid, well-designed boats made to satisfy cruisers and racers on all of the European coasts. The NC 895 — now built in Cadillac, Michigan, expressly for the American boating lifestyle — is a key model in Jeanneau’s multi-line effort to bring outboard-powered contemporary designs to the U.S. market. The main features Perhaps the most dominant characteristic of the NC 895’s interior is light, let in by a 360-degree expanse of windows in the salon, with lower edges for increased visibility. Light also floods through the large in-hull windows serving the forward master cabin, as well the large, private amidships guest cabin down below. Natural ventilation is also prevalent, thanks to a sliding

portside window, a sliding door to starboard of the helm in the salon (a great feature for quick access to the side and foredeck when operating shorthanded), twin sliding sunroof panels, and a three-panel opening aft bulkhead door. Dockside reverse-cycle air conditioning (16,000 BTU) is standard, but an optional Westerbeke 3.5kW gas genset can be installed in the massive centerline storage compartment beneath the cockpit sole for those who want relief from excess heat or cold while anchored out. Versatile seating is a key feature of the NC 895. In the cockpit, the standard aft bench slides forward when it’s time to put the boat away, making room for the engine nacelles and allowing the lower units to lift clear of the water. This conversion, by the way, does not block access to the starboard side boarding platform and swim ladder. There’s even an integral, opening side port for easier boarding from fixed docks. Two important cockpit seating options include a second bench to port or a third aft-facing bench, both centered around a table that drops down to become a sunpad in the third configuration. On the bow, the forward portion of the large sunpad has an option that pops

up to form a comfortable bench seat, creating yet another space for privacy and enjoyment of the surrounding waters. Cruise in comfort In the salon, the dinette to port converts easily into a double berth when extra sleeping space is required. The neatest dinette feature is the backrest on the forward bench, which pivots aft to create a forward-facing bench. The well-thought-out galley is located aft on the starboard side so that service to those relaxing in the cockpit is as easy

as serving those seated at the dinette. The helm is compact yet complete, with room for an optional Lowrance touch-screen chartplotter/fishfinder (two sizes available), a Yamaha engine display and a twin-lever binnacle. The Jeanneau NC 895 blends comfort and livability in a two-stateroom package that should more than satisfy the needs of a cruising couple or family. Don’t miss the chance to see one for yourself. And if you get a chance to test drive, do so with the confidence that this boat can take the rough stuff in stride. ★

JEANNEAU NC 795 THE LITTLE SISTER The Jeanneau NC 795 may be smaller than its NC 895 sistership, but that doesn’t mean the boatbuilder has left off important features that make cruising enjoyable. Like the larger model, the NC 795 is easy to board on the starboard side thanks to a swim platform with inset ladder that rests flush with the cockpit sole. She has the same cockpit seating configuration, including: A sliding aft bench for optimal storage of the single Yamaha F200 outboard, two options for additional seating, and a table that becomes a sunpad. The salon is similarly designed for excellent visibility from inside, and offers abundant ventilation and light with sliding windows port and starboard, a wide single sunroof overhead, and a sliding three-panel aft bulkhead door. Jeanneau includes another versatile dinette that combines a fore- or aft-facing forward bench with an aft berth. This setup also allows for conversion to a double berth. Since the NC 795 features a single master cabin forward,

overnight accommodations are available for a young family of four, or two couples. Although the starboard side door is eliminated, the helm remains as spacious and functional on the NC 795 as it is on the NC 895. The dash is virtually identical, with room for the same two Lowrance MFDs; however, the NC 895 locates the optional VHF radio (with AIS) above the helm in a hardtop compartment. When the helm seat is tilted forward, galley counter space increases for easier meal preparation. The standard galley has a white fiberglass countertop and a double sink. A highly desirable galley option includes a fixed propane stove. There are numerous storage lockers throughout the salon, although most owners who live in hotter climates will opt for the 8,000 BTU dockside air conditioning option. Powered by a single Yamaha F200 gas outboard, the performance of the NC 795 is by no means the slower sistership.

With the proper conditions, Jeanneau puts its top speed at 40 mph and the cruising speed at 22 mph, the latter giving a range of around 200 miles. Our test boat — with four people aboard and full fuel — topped out at 39 mph and hit best efficiency at 4000 rpm and 21 mph, burning 7.6 gph as indicated on the Yamaha engine management screen. On deck, safety for the crew is paramount. Molded steps lead up to the side decks, assisted by small handrails on the aft bulkhead wings. Welded rails that run from the steps to the bow complement stainless steel grabrails on the outboard edges of the hardtop. Both the 795 and 895 have flush-

deck lockers for anchor rodes and pulpits for proper storage. Think of the NC 795 as a fullfeatured, affordable complement to the NC 895. They’re both designed to cruise comfortably.

alk onto any boat, yacht or into a beach house, and you’ll likely spy at least one nautical pillow or wall hanging. Although the boat industry has made incredible technological strides in the past few years, it often seems to have a hard time getting away from the stereotypical navy and white-striped nautical tradition. Even the newest, most modern boat models seem to rely on white, red and navy designs, or move in the extreme opposite direction with hot pink exteriors. An aesthetically pleasing middle ground, it seems, has been elusive. Anthony Michael of Anthony Michael Interior Design, a Chicago-based luxury interior design company, is used to finding the diamond in the rough — turning the typical into something chic and unique. So when Michael had the opportunity to redesign a boat to his own liking — not just the tastes of a client, as he has done in the past — one thing was for certain: He wasn’t going to fall into the anchor, seashell and starfish trap. Instead, over the course of a few months Michael and his team of craftsmen put in countless man-hours

to renovate and redecorate a 60-foot 1977 Hatteras motoryacht, christened H.R.H. Lola, with a more modern nautical look in mind. With the redesign crew working until the last minute, H.R.H. Lola was officially unveiled at a launch party in June at the Chicago Yacht Club, where it now resides. As a result, Lola has transformed from a 70s shagcarpeted old vessel into a chic luxury yacht that boasts an updated black-and-white aesthetic, complete with crisp lines, art-deco touches, thoughtful details throughout, and lots and lots of glossy black paint. Another unexpected bonus? Lola can be chartered. Michael decided to operate the vessel as a boutique charter yacht experience, offering boaters the opportunity to cruise along Lake Michigan’s Chicago coastline in high style during the summer months.

THE M A STE RM IND Michael first began working as an interior specialist in 1983. Since then, he has amassed an impressive portfolio of design projects for residences, specialty

restaurants, retail spaces, private aircraft, and, of course, yachts. With industry awards under his belt — such as the Designer of the Year and Retail Designer of the Year from the Chicago Tribune — Michael is known for a style often described as classical, contemporary and eclectic. Over the course of his design career, Michael has developed a personal motto that becomes evident when looking through his portfolio: “Fortune favors the bold.” “He’ll take the ugliest house on the block if it has good bones and potential,” says Kurt Jacob Miller, marketing director for Anthony Michael Interior Design. “Anthony has never shied away from taking on a new task.” For Michael, Lola presented a new task in that it was a project where he could design the boat solely on his own tastes, rather than catering to a client. Unlike previous projects, such as a 1969 Chris-Craft Commander that exhibited many of Michael’s trademark crisp lines and classic feel, but that stuck to sea-friendly aquas and blues, Michael would have full reign to make Lola into whatever he wanted.

GOOD B ONE S As a lifelong yachtsman and admirer of quality-made American boats, Michael is no stranger to the water. When searching for a boat to work with, Michael looked for “good bones” — in other words, that the boat had a good foundation and structure. “As long as the boat has good space and good bones, who cares what the interior looks like,” Michael says. “New boats cost an absolute fortune. But you can pick up a fantastic older, well-made Hatteras or Chris-Craft comparable to a vacation cottage. And you can do a redesign and have a million dollar boat.” When Michael first purchased the ’77 Hatteras, it — and its gold, shag carpet — had seen better days. Barbara Walsh and son Mike Walsh of Elite Yachts, a pre-owned and new yacht brokerage, are very familiar with how Lola looked before her transformation. The previous owner stored the Hatteras with Marine Services, Elite Yacht’s parent company, for about 25 years. However, they say, for the past 15 years the boat didn’t see much maintenance or improvement.

FR O M BL EAK TO CHIC It goes without saying that one of the first things you notice about Lola is her glossy black exterior. Instead of touches of black paint, Michael had Elite Yachts paint the hull, superstructure and topside of the boat a vivid, glossy black. “It’s definitely an acquired taste,” Mike Walsh says. “It definitely modernized the boat. [But] it turned out gorgeous.” Walsh is the first to admit that he wasn’t initially a fan of painting Lola all black. A black paint job can sometimes end up showing every single imperfection in a hull. “I tried to talk him out of it,” Walsh says. However, Michael was insistent. The first step to getting Lola’s distinctive sheen was to sand down and prime the big navy bootstripe ringing the boat. Once the surface was prepped and ready for paint, Walsh decided to go with Awlfair LW, a basecoat that fairs, levels and smooths the boat’s imperfections. “The nice thing about the L-class is it’s a basecoat,” he says. “It gives [Lola] a very nice depth and luster, and makes it easier to repair.” After the basecoat, Walsh used a hardshell paint, rather than a gelcoat. He likens the process to painting a car. Rather than go with the popular gelcoat option, which Walsh says is very durable but more easily absorbs dirt and fades, he decided to go with a hardshell paint that would retain its luster, be easy to clean and wax, and wear better down the road. Overall, Walsh estimates his team spent close to 1,400 hours painting the boat. However, both Barbara

and Mike seem to think it was worth the hard work. “You’re not going to see another boat like that on Lake Michigan,” Barbara says. “[Michael] did a beautiful job.”

M ODE RN B E A UT While the yacht’s exterior certainly makes a statement, it’s the small details — from bottom-lit chairs on the flybridge to hand-painted marble showers below deck — that tie the elegant feel of this vessel together. Michael largely gutted and revamped Lola, but was careful to keep certain aspects of the boat that harken back to its original design. For example, the shag carpet is gone, but the spiral staircase that leads from the main deck below remains, now lit with LED lighting. Those familiar with old Hatteras models will also recognize the original captain’s wheel, and the original doors throughout the vessel. The cockpit area was left largely as it was. Due to its size — Lola is a 60-foot motoryacht — Michael was able to outfit the boat with many standardsize amenities, rather than having to custom-fit each piece of furniture and carpeting. Starting at the very top, on the flybridge, guests can relax in lit Ramon Esteve chairs while enjoying a 360-degree view of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. The flybridge also comes with a davit that accommodates a Yamaha Waverunner for some extra fun on the water. On the bow of the main deck, guests will find ample space to sunbathe on a large custom lounger and two seats. In the cockpit, guests will probably find the yacht’s full-time captain behind the wheel. Currently,

Lola is outfitted with a Harmon-Garmin navigational system, which Michael says is likely to be updated. From the helm, the captain can power up twin 8V92 TI 650-hp Detroit diesels, which were rebuilt to last in 2016. These engines can crank Lola up to a top speed of 19 knots, providing a smooth and steady ride. Aft behind the cockpit is an elegant but comfortable seating area with two white couches and a blackand-white geometric rug. Windows to port and starboard provide water views, or shade with blinds on particularly sunny days. Moving beyond this area, outside toward the stern of the boat, guests will find a dining table that can accommodate eight with a full wetbar nearby for refreshments. Hatteras experts will find one of the more major redesigns downstairs in the front stateroom. Rather than keep the two full beds the boat was originally equipped with, Michael decided to reconfigure the room to fit one queen bed. Total, the three private staterooms can comfortably sleep six guests. The cabin galley features stainless steel cabinetry, a Calcutta marble countertop, and a full-service bar with temperature-controlled wine storage. There are also three private heads. Although it’s easy to get caught up in the modern feel of Lola’s black, white and grey color palette, it’s the small details that are worth a second look. Michael used a number of different textures on Lola, meaning that no two surfaces seem the same. For example, in the cabin, guests will find Italian linens on the beds, teak vanities, and marble and glass mosaics. What looks like

a number of smaller drawers in the galley are actually large refrigerated drawers. Looking closely on the aft deck, guests will notice original artwork, a mirrored ceiling with LED lighting and faux fur blankets. The entire boat is a tasteful collection of fur, quartz, marble, stainless steel, teak and leather. It’s these high-end touches, Michael says, that make Lola a luxury craft.

OPE N TO A LL Lola is a modern yacht in all senses; rather than keep her to himself, Michael has decided to make Lola part of the sharing economy. Boaters in the Chicago area can rent out Lola for a number of occasions: A corporate function, a romantic getaway, a family get-together, or a day out on the water for the girls (or the guys!). Michael says chartering Lola not only helps with the hefty cost of keeping a boat docked in downtown Chicago, but it also acts as a nice calling card for the business. What’s more, chartering the boat allows others to enjoy it and experience what might otherwise be an unattainable private luxury yacht experience. Michael says the response to Lola has been strong, steady and positive. But Michael has his sights set on his next project, which means that this level of sophistication and elegance can be yours; Lola is currently for sale through Elite Yachts. “People like old beautiful things and new beautiful things,” Michael muses. Fortunately, Lola is both. ★

Paradise

Story by Ming Tappin Photos courtesy of Paul Gauguin Cruises

Y

ou know that oldie from Eddie Money: “I’ve got two tickets to paradise. Won’t you pack your bags, we’ll leave tonight.” I wonder if he was thinking about going to French Polynesia when he recorded the hit song about taking his girlfriend on vacation. Let’s face it: When most people think of paradise, they usually conjure images of turquoise seas, endless blue sky and powdery white sand beaches on a faraway island. And when it comes to paradise, you can’t get any better than French Polynesia. Except, of course, when you arrive there on the m/s Paul Gauguin. Although the 100-plus island groups usually appear at the very edge of world maps, as if they’ll fall off the end of the earth, French Polynesia isn’t as far as you may think. To reach the port of Papeete on the island of Tahiti, a nonstop flight from Los Angeles only takes eight and a half hours, or, as my friend likes to say: “It’s just two cocktails past Hawaii.” It’s even in the same time zone as Hawaii, but the similarities end there. These South Pacific isles get the same number of visitors in one year that Hawaii gets in one month. So if you’re looking to escape the crowds and tourist traps, French Polynesia is definitely the place to be. My itinerary was a 14-night cruise aboard the Paul Gauguin, sailing from Papeete through the Society Islands, the Tuamotus and the Marquesas — three of the five island groups that make up French Polynesia

Paradi Onboard amenities

The Paul Gauguin, aptly named after the French post-Impressionist who drew inspiration from these islands, is purpose-built to sail the Polynesian waters. With a shallow draft and a U-shaped hull, the Gauguin can anchor close to shore, bringing her guests to the islands within minutes. Her ample, open decks allow for maximum enjoyment of dramatic sailaways and blazing sunsets. To allow easy access to French Polynesia’s colorful lagoons, a watersports marina unfolds from the ship’s stern for guests to enjoy complimentary toys, such as kayaks, windsurf boards and stand-up paddleboards. Complimentary snorkeling gear is also available for use during the cruise. PADI-certified divers can choose from a myriad of excursions at each port, and a certification program is available on-board. All accommodations have ocean views, and 70 percent of the staterooms have private verandas for admiring the breathtaking scenery. Two onboard restaurants and a casual open-air grill serve delicious meals, including locally-caught seafood. Continental and regional fare prevails, but a partnership with Michelin-starred French Chef Jean-Pierre Vigato also brings a fusion of French cuisine and local ingredients. There’s also complimentary room service if you can’t tear yourself away from your private veranda.

First-rate service

Everyone on-board could not get over the congenial and intuitive service, and how genuine the crewmembers were. “I’m seriously concerned,” said my friend at the breakfast buffet halfway through the cruise. “I don’t know how I’ll manage to take my cereal to the table by myself when I get home. They never let me carry anything!” We shared a good laugh, and sure enough, later that day at afternoon tea we saw a 6-foot-tall man walking to his table as a waiter carried his tiny bowl of ice cream for him. Surely he could have managed the feat himself, but on-board the Paul Gauguin, the staff wouldn’t have it any other way. Outstanding service like this is what makes the Gauguin so special. With 217 crewmembers serving a maximum of 332 guests, the staff truly got to know our likes and wishes. After meeting me on the first day, all crewmembers addressed me by name for the next two weeks. They had an incredible memory for everything. I couldn’t name the wonderful wine I enjoyed at dinner several nights previous, but my wine steward, Adrian, remembered and poured it for me again. Speaking of libations, all beverages on-board the Paul Gauguin are included. Feel like a glass of champagne at sailaway, an iced cappuccino while poolside, a soda with lunch or a glass of wine with dinner? It’s yours for the asking. Each stateroom fridge is stocked with sodas, bottled water and beer, and is replenished daily.

ise Soak up the culture

Our days at sea were peaceful and lazy. A leisurely breakfast, a visit to the spa or a dip in the pool preceded lounging on-deck with a cold drink in the afternoon. For those seeking enrichment, there were lectures, documentary films, and Polynesian arts and crafts. On our trip, there was an art professor who specialized in the artwork of Paul Gauguin; she delivered several lectures about the life and works of the artist whose final resting place we were about to visit. Evening entertainment featured authentic performances by local artists; however, they were not kitschy luaus you’ve likely seen in Hawaii. We enjoyed traditional Polynesian warrior dances where the performers belted out war cries accompanied by thunderous drums carved from native wood and wrapped with animal skins. In between numbers, young girls provided vocal introductions through harmonized melodies. The Otea followed, with fast rhythmic drumming and mesmerizing hip shaking by women wearing elaborate headdresses and traditional skirts made of hibiscus bark. The ship’s social hosts, Les Gauguins and Les Gauguines, added to the South Pacific vibe on-board. This group of young men and women all hail from French Polynesia, and their sole job is to interact with guests and share their history and culture through storytelling, music and dance. In addition, a dedicated space on-board showcases French Polynesian culture through a display of wood carvings, sculptures and artifacts. Soaking up the culture is one thing, but most people also bring home memories of French Polynesia

Cruise with Paul Gauguin

The Paul Gauguin sails year-round in French Polynesia from Papeete, with seven-night sailings to the Society Islands; 10- and 11-night sailings, which also include the Tuamotus or the Cook Islands; and 14-night sailings visiting the Marquesas. Sailings for 2018 and 2019 are available for reservations. In 2019, there will be two special, one-time sailings to Tonga and Fiji. Fares include round-trip economy ights from Los Angeles, airport transfers, all onboard meals and beverages, daily activities, nightly entertainment, watersports equipment, and gratuities to onboard sta. For more information, visit PGCRUISES.COM.

radise Bora Bora (7) is no doubt the quintessential image of French Polynesia. The jagged pinnacle of Mount Otemanu surrounded by a brilliant turquoise lagoon is a sight for sore eyes. This is a playground for the rich, with luxury resorts and overwater bungalows commanding exorbitant rates — another good reason to arrive on the Paul Gauguin, where everything is included. Our snorkeling excursion took us in search of manta and eagle rays (both successful), plus a stop at a colorful coral garden. There was enough time after lunch to zip over to the Gauguin’s exclusive private beach, where there’s nothing but a few coconut trees and a crewmember with a cooler full of beer, soda and water. I waded out 30 feet from shore, still in knee-deep water, sat down in the bath-temperature water and soaked up paradise. An afternoon shower passes by, but who cares? I’m already in the water and I have an ice-cold beer. Just off the coast of Taha’a is Motu Mahana (8) — Paul Gauguin’s private island, accessible only to the ship’s privileged guests. This was a day to swim, snorkel and kayak, or take a tour to visit a vanilla farm; however, after a few eventful days in a row, I was less inclined. I simply lazed in the comfort of my sun lounger with a cocktail-filled coconut in hand. The only interruption to my day was a beachside massage, followed by a barbecue lunch of ribs, chicken, sausages, burgers and all the fixings (and yes, I had to try them all). Afterward, I soaked in that bath-temperature water again, listening to Les Gauguins and Les Gauguines serenading us with their ukuleles. And just as my coconut drink ran dry, my Adrian magically appeared alongside with his palm frond-covered floating bar to top me up. On our last day in Moorea (9), there were plenty of excursions to explore above and below the waterline, but we chose to rent a car to go hiking with two friends we had met on-board. The rugged trail took us to a spectacular viewpoint. Afterward, we drove to the Belvedere Lookout for more photo-ops. The view overlooking Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay with the sharp peak of Mount Rotui in the middle is not to be missed. Car rentals in the Society Islands are easy to arrange, and driving is on the right. Rates are high, so it’s best to share with a few traveling companions. Be prepared to drive a stick shift or pay a lot more for an automatic. At the end of our two blissful weeks, we all agreed without a doubt: French Polynesia is pure paradise and a cruise aboard the Paul Gauguin is your ticket there. ★

ith the Sawtooth Mountains as a dramatic backdrop and a population of 1,351 in the off-season months (and probably double that in the summer), Grand Marais was voted USA Today’s 2017 Best Midwestern Small Town, Budget Travel’s 2015 Coolest Small Town in America, and Lake Superior Magazine’s 2015 Best Weekend Destination. The Ojibwe name for the area, Gichi-biitoobiig (meaning “double body of water”), is inspired by the broad tombolo at the shoreline that creates two natural harbors and has long-served as a historical meeting point. The original European voyageurs, fur traders and big lake fishermen converged here. Today, Grand Marais is an access point into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, a jumping off point for Isle Royale National Park, and home to the North House Folk School, one of the oldest, established folk schools in the country. I first encountered Grand Marais after spending a week on Isle Royale aboard our 38-foot trawler, Mazurka. My husband, Mark, and I took our three kids — then 5, 2, and 11 months old — to the big island for real wilderness immersion. After seven days of hiking, berry picking, fishing and little contact with the outside world, we were ready to return to society. Grand Marais was the sweetest re-entry point imaginable. Its welcoming charm greeted us from the water, and it proved just the right size to ease us back into daily life. Wi-Fi! Cell phones! Restaurants, shops, provisions — all within walking distance of the marina. It was the friendliest community a boater could hope to find anywhere. “I see us as an oasis,” says Dave Tersteeg, director of Parks and Recreation, who oversees the municipal Grand Marais Marina and its adjacent campground. “We’re on the desolate north shore of no services. Everyone says they’re so happy and so relieved to get here because they’ve been waiting 10 hours. You have delayed gratification getting here.”

Tie up

One step off the dock you’ll see why Grand Marais is known for its artists. The marina neighbors the North House Folk School, one of the oldest and most well-established folk schools in the nation. As you walk through the collection of outdoor and indoor work spaces, you can smell bread baking while watching artisans and their students hammer iron, build boats and carve furniture. North House Folk School brings instructors from around the world to teach traditional northern crafts year-round; some classes last an afternoon, some last for weeks. It’s best to reserve a spot in advance; classes fill up fast. The school’s mission is inspired by the Scandinavian “folkehøjskole,” or traditional folk school, where learning is valued for its own sake with a focus on traditional methods. Events and festivals are held at the school throughout the year including the annual Wooden Boat Show and Summer Solstice Festival. At this event, visitors can see handmade boats, eat traditional meals, try square dancing and watch craftsmen at work. “It’s a great family event where you can taste the character of the school,” says Greg Wright, the school’s executive director. While you’re in town, you can also take a class or listen to an artist’s talk at the Grand Marais Art Colony, which has been supporting artists since 1947. It offers classes, talks, activities, residencies and studio space. It began as a summer wilderness refuge for artists and now hosts events like the Grand Marais Arts Festival, Plein Air Grand Marais (an outdoor painting competition) and Tour d’Art, an annual home tour fundraiser. If art is your passion, you’ll find galleries (and a whole lot more) in the downtown waterfront area, just a two-block walk from the marina.

The Grand Marais Marina offers gas and diesel fuel, pumpout, electricity and water at its 19 seasonal and two transient slips. The marina can accommodate boats up to 50 feet at the docks and even larger at the mooring buoys. What the marina lacks in space, it makes up for in hospitality. Last year, one of our transient neighbors told us, “Every year we call to get a slip and they’re all taken, but somehow Dave gets us in.” The “we’ll find a spot for you” customer service is an important aspect of the Grand Marais Marina. “I’m a boater and I know what it’s like to get that kind of service,” says Tersteeg. “These boats have needs and I try to meet them. I’m in tune with the fleet of seasonals — it’s pretty often that someone is out to the island or someone is broken down.” Even if Dave’s magic can’t find you a slip, there are other options: Nine buoy moorings are open in the east harbor and can accommodate boats more than 50 feet. Boats can also anchor in the west side where there’s good holding ground. At the east side, there are wall tie-ups near the Coast Guard Station and along the harbor wall for a small fee. Luckily for boaters, no matter where you moor your boat, it’s close to everything.

The renowned Sivertson Gallery opened in 1980 by artist and author Howard Sivertson and his daughter, Jan Sivertson. Jan manages the gallery while Howard paints in watercolor and oil, creating scenes of the North Shore, Isle Royale and the Boundary Waters. The gallery exhibits artwork that reflects the character of Lake Superior. Today, Sivertson Gallery exhibits more than 60 regional artists, Canadian Inuit and Alaskan native art, and Canadian First Nation and Native American art. Less than a block away, the Cook County Historical Society operates Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery, which features local, regional and national artists in revolving exhibits. The gallery also displays a permanent collection of original art by the early 20th century pioneer and artist Anna Johnson, who influenced this area as an artist and art teacher, creating paintings, etchings, ceramics and stained glass. If you’re looking for supplies, the eclectic Joy & Company sells a large variety of professional art supplies alongside local art, antiques, photography and jewelry. Stop by the backyard for barbecue, s’mores and the kids’ scratch pad, where you can pick for agates and other gemstones.

Drury Lane Books

The downtown area abounds with shops and bookstores. Lake Superior Trading Post is the area’s largest outdoor gear and gift store. Here you will find an eclectic array of men and women’s clothing, gear and camping supplies, maps, books, locally-made products and more. This family-owned retailer offers the expertise to get you geared up and on your way year-round. Joynes Ben Franklin is everybody’s favorite little department store, and Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply offers outdoor clothing, guided tours and outdoor rental gear. Step inside Drury Lane Books to peruse its collection or listen to an author’s reading while gazing out at the big lake. Birchbark Books and Gifts sells new and used books, gifts and toys, and has a terrific play pit for kids to explore. And it would be tough to walk into Gunflint Mercantile without bringing home some fudge. While you’re downtown, make sure to get a picture of the iconic Beaver House bait shop. You can’t miss it — there’s a huge walleye sticking out of the roof. Swing over to the Lightkeeper’s House Museum, which was built in 1896 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Walking through the doors of this museum is like stepping back in time.

Fisherman’s Picnic

Held the first week of August, the annual Fisherman’s Picnic brings 10,000 to 15,000 visitors to the Grand Marais lakefront for a four-day festival. The hometown picnic started in the 1930s when Grand Marais was a small logging and fishing village and some neighbors decided to come together for a shore lunch. Today, attendees stroll through pop-up tents, shop at crazy daze sales and compete for prizes in the Big Fish contest, minnow races, loon calling, trail running and the professional log rolling tournament. The Lions Club serves hundreds of its renowned fishburgers: Handbreaded, deep-fried Lake Superior herring. There are fireworks on Saturday night, a parade on Sunday afternoon and two shows everyday with live bands.

Alfresco dining

If you’re ready for something besides onboard provisions, you’re in luck: Grand Marais hosts a unique collection of places to eat, without a chain restaurant in sight. It’s important to note that while everything is open during the summer months, if you come during the off-season (it’s still beautiful, and the cross-country skiing is the best), double-check to see if the restaurant or shop you’ve been dying to try is open. Many venues operate seasonally.

The Crooked Spoon Café — led by Chef Nathan Hingos and his wife, Sara — uses local and regional ingredients whenever possible, and its menu changes seasonally. The cafe has a great selection of craft beer and wine. The Gun Flint Tavern offers soups, sandwiches, wraps and a full dinner menu. They also have an on-site micro-brewery and pub, and a rooftop deck where you can listen to live music on summer weekends. Sip craft beer at the Voyageur Brewing Company while looking out over its taproom and the big lake. The popular Angry Trout Café is inside an old commercial fishing shanty on the waterfront with a locally-based menu, including hand-harvested wild rice and their specialty: Fresh Lake Superior fish. Looking for something quick? You can find provisions and more at the locally-owned Whole Foods Co-op, filled with organic produce, groceries, and ready-made sandwiches and soups. Java Moose is open year-round with superb coffee, pastries, soup, sandwiches and a lot of ice cream. It’s the perfect pitstop before you head to the boardwalk or pick for rocks on the cobblestone beach overlooking Grand Marais Harbor. No visit to Grand Marais would be complete without a stop at World’s Best Donuts. How many donuts do they make? This five-generation donut family proclaims, “Our grandma always said, ‘We make more donuts than McDonald’s sells hamburgers because they have time to count’.”

After a good meal, explore some of Grand Marais’ excellent hiking and biking opportunities. From downtown you can walk out past the Grand Marais Coast Guard Station to find the trailhead at the tombolo. From there, you can turn right to explore the Grand Marais Lighthouse nature trail, or left to hike out to Artist’s Point. Both trails offer stunning views of the lake, the town and the Sawtooth Mountains. Heading northeast out of town, you’ll find the Pincushion Mountain Trail System — a local favorite with miles of excellent trails for hiking, running, biking and skiing. The parking area offers stunning views of the lake and is a popular picnic spot. If you’re craving more adventure, you can drive up the historic Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway, a two-lane paved road winding nearly 60 miles through boreal forest and glacier-created lakes to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The trail is worth the trip; it has a unique history among fur traders, early pioneers and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps. Your chances of spotting a moose are pretty high, and you can trek across the Laurentian Divide, hiking over some of the most ancient, exposed rock on the planet. On your way back to the marina, you may want to wander through the Grand Marais Campground and RV Park, which has 300 campsites, including 57 primitive campsites with lake views or private wooded sites. the jazz-era Naniboujou Lodge and Restaurant built in 1928 on the shores of Lake Superior. The Lodge was originally intended to be a private sportsman’s club with members such as Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey. It’s now on the National Registry of Historic Places and boasts a wondrously painted dining room ceiling and the largest stone fireplace in the state. At the water’s edge on the west side of the harbor, you’ll find the historic Fish House replica and the fishing tug Neegee (which means “friend” in Ojibwe). The fish house, circa 1930, includes commercial fishing artifacts and a typical fish house scene with mannequins of a fisherman and his wife cleaning herring and preparing it for shipping to Duluth and Chicago. This display was created with help from area high school students. Keep an eye out for the folk school’s 50-foot schooner, Hjørdis, which offers sailing courses to the Apostle Islands and Isle Royale. While you’re at the beach, you may choose to do one of the best things in Grand Marais: Relax and watch the rolling waves on Lake Superior. Whether you’re learning a new skill at the folk school, shopping, eating, hiking or napping — no matter what you do here — there’s never a bad day in Grand Marais. ★

Charlevoix, MI Family-friendly compound on Lake Charlevoix.

T

ime spent at a lake home is best shared with others, not enjoyed alone. This expansive Lake Charlevoix compound is designed for creating memories with family and friends. Fill the lawn with croquet, bocce ball and beach volleyball. Host a sandcastle-building competition on the sprawling 370-foot sandy beach. Tie up half a dozen boats to the 270-foot-long dock and launch your very own rendezvous. Add in music, laughter and the crackling of a bonfire. “It’s hard to find waterfront lots on Lake Charlevoix that are larger than 200 feet,” says realtor Mark Snyder. “To get 370 feet of water frontage in this configuration with more than 8 acres — its just one of those things that they don’t make anymore.” Take your pick from a wide variety of accommodations, including the 3,819-square-foot main home or the nearly 2,000-square-foot guesthouse with three bedrooms, a full kitchen and two bathrooms. The compound can comfortably sleep 20, so invite the whole family. A log-sided cabin set amidst a tuft of trees can serve

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

as a kid’s playhouse or bunkhouse. Store all your water toys in the two-stall detached garage with a lofted area. A large carport behind the garage serves as a wonderful shelter for your RV. Enjoy a home-cooked meal underneath the sheltered pavilion just off the main home. Even if the weather disappoints, you’ll be protected under the pavilion while reveling in stunning lake views and front-row sunrises. “You can truly create a generational property on this compound,” Snyder says. Best of all, you’re minutes from all that Charlevoix has to offer via boat or car: Boutique shopping, fine dining, community events, Mushroom Houses and Round Lake. Pass underneath the US-31 bascule bridge to explore Lake Michigan. For jetsetters, the Charlevoix Municipal Airport is located just down the street. “Being on Lake Charlevoix, you can boat any day of the year and can go anywhere in the world,” Snyder says. “It’s a passageway to Chicago, through Lake Erie to New York, and even to the ocean.” ★

North Shore Marina Full-service boat repair shop for projects big and small.

F

or many, the boating season slows to a halt as the temperature drops and snow begins to fall in the Great Lakes. At North Shore Marina in Spring Lake, Michigan, however, a frosty off-season means that activity is picking up inside. In fact, the 60-year-old full-service marina is a hive of activity with repair and paint projects big and small throughout the entire season. At North Shore Marina, winter is project season. As one of the only facilities in the Great Lakes with a paint booth, the marina’s two full-time painters are kept busy doing touch-ups and full boat repaints. The paint booth can take boats up to 100 feet. However, according to North Shore’s Jim Brewer, painting is far from the only service available; the marina is more of a one-stop repair shop. “There’s not much we don’t do,” Brewer says. “It’s not uncommon for us to get jobs that run into the hundreds of hours. We’ll do retrofit jobs that range from $200 to $200,000.” In addition to general maintenance and winterization services, as well as ample heated indoor and outdoor storage

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

options, North Shore also offers woodworking, tile, canvas and upholstery, and fiberglass work. Brewer says service teams will work on custom design projects if the boater has something specific in mind. Boaters who only need a small repair or project shouldn’t be intimidated by the scope of North Shore’s services, Brewer says: “We love the little jobs as much as we love the big jobs.” As any good service department knows, customer service is key. North Shore Marina takes customer service into the modern era by keeping boaters updated face-to-face on projects — even if they’re miles away. “With everyone being so technology-savvy today, I can send pictures from the boat,” Brewer says. “I’ve actually sent videos of the process to boaters so they understand what’s going on.” Brewer says he and his team often Skype, Facetime or send photos to boaters about the project’s progress to prevent miscommunication and misunderstandings. Brewer advises boaters with big winter projects in mind to notify the marina by July or August. Smaller projects and repairs can be squeezed in throughout the winter. ★

CLASSIC CRAFTS by Kate Bush

Close friends of mine, the Dykstra family, introduced me to wooden boating when I was still in grade school. The wooden boat “bug” never left me. When I was in 6th grade, Bill Dykstra was bringing a boat back from Canada and asked my dad and me to join him. Bill arranged a ride for us on a beautiful Ditchburn Boat while in Lake Muskoka. Ditchburn, among many of the Canadian boatbuilders, built all one-off, custom boats for their clients. After that ride, I always wanted a Ditchburn. I found Elsie 35 years later up in northern Lake Joseph (part of the Muskoka chain of lakes), and she was for sale! She’s a 23-foot 1932 Ditchburn Boats triple cockpit runabout with a 150-hp Grey Marine “Fireball” engine. My wife, Nora, and I purchased Elsie from her longtime owner, Brendan O’Brien, through the help of Terry Johnson at Hamer Bay Marina LTD, who serviced Elsie for years. The boat was in great shape for her age and had all of her original hardware down to the unique “Navy top.” Elsie was featured on page 57 of “Ditchburn Boats: A Muskoka Legacy” by Harold Shield and Bev McMullen. Nora and I brought Elsie home to Michigan and used her for the summer of 2007, and then felt it was time she receive a new bottom. We brought Elsie to our friend Peter Breen from Peter Breens Antique and Classic Boat Co. in Canada for restoration. Since then, our family and friends have used Elsie for hundreds of hours at our Reeds Lake home in Michigan. Email kbush@lakelandboating.com if you have a Classic Craft with a good story to share! —Louie Cares, East Grand Rapids, MI
