What’s a quick and easy DIY project for your boat?
Ken Kreisler
Come to Life I
mprovements to your boat, no matter the size — from something as simple as adding a new Bimini or onboard lighting to more intensive projects like renovating the galley — breathe new life into your prized possession. Total boat restorations or even hour-long DIY projects showcase the pride of boat ownership. One such company that brings antique and classic boats back to their former glory is Ramsey Brothers Restorations based in Toledo, Ohio (p. 44). This family run team specializes in refurbishing vintage marine engines, restoring classic yachts and even builds new classic-style Dart boats — a model they’ve dubbed the Baby Dart. A village that, much like restoring classic boats, keeps the charm but adds modern amenities is the peaceful Lake Ontario hamlet of Sackets Harbor, New York (p. 24). At first glance, the village seems nearly frozen in time, but venture downtown to the quaint shops and first-rate restaurants and you’ll see there’s plenty to offer modern-day visitors. Over on Lake Erie, Norfolk County, Ontario, has been dubbed the “Canadian Riviera” (p. 52 ). Protected by the serene Long Point peninsula, this county offers white, sandy beaches, bike trails, wineries, fun festivals and more! Changing the face (or shall I say tail end) of the boating industry are outboard engines (p. 48). Contributor Craig Ritchie explores this noticeable shift in power and offers a guide to new 2020 boat models sporting these powerplants. Share photos of your boat renovations! One of the more frustrating maintenance items aboard is trying to keep the snaps and zippers on windshield dodgers or full enclosures clean and working freely. While WD-40 works well, the overspray can stain canvas. I have found that using a toothbrush and soap and water keeps things snapping and moving freely, as well as applying some petroleum jelly with Q-tips. Try the stick form of lip balm or a dab of silicone grease, also applied with Q-tips. I also found a Shurhold product called Snap Stick that is easy to use and does the job. HHH
Craig Ritchie Adding a wireless remote monitoring system like a Zigboat kit is super easy and lets you keep tabs on things like battery voltage, bilge levels and unauthorized entry from any smartphone. HHH
Arnie Hammerman Adding a USB charger outlet. I went to my local marine store and purchased a dual USB charger and some marine-grade wire. I checked my DC fusebox and there was an extra unused circuit. I then found a convenient location for the new charging outlet and marked it, making sure that drilling there would cut through into a void. Using a handheld screw gun and drill bit, I carefully drilled the hole and mounted the device. With the DC power off I then attached and ran the wire to my panel where I wired it in and placed a 10amp fuse on the circuit. This should be adequate for phone and tablet charging. After checking all the connections, I turned the DC power back on and now I have a convenient second charging station.

EPA Gives $3.7 Million to Dredge Grand Traverse Harbor, Save Buffalo Reef The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has provided $3.7 million in Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) funds to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the removal of stamp sands in Grand Traverse Harbor near the town of Gay, Michigan. Stamp sands are a waste product from copper processing that are threatening to cover the 2,200acre Buffalo Reef in Lake Superior. Dredging is underway and expected to continue through the end of the calendar year.
“This GLRI funding will help protect one of Lake Superior’s most productive fish spawning areas from encroaching mining waste,” says Regional Administrator and Great Lakes National Program Director Cathy Stepp. “Years of collaboration between EPA and its partners have resulted in on-the-ground action that will deliver meaningful results for Lake Superior’s fish population, beach-front communities and fishing and recreational industries.” For more information, visit EPA .GOV.

New York Gov. Signs Safe Boating Law into Effect
In August, New York Governor Andrew Coumo signed a new law into effect, named Brianna’s Law, requiring all operators of motorized watercraft to complete a state-approved safety course. The new law is named after Brianna Lieneck, who was only 11 years old when she died in a boating accident in 2005. “There should be a basic level of knowledge that you have before you’re given the permission to go out there and operate a boat, and making a safety course mandatory is common sense,” Gov. Cuomo says. “It protects the operator of the boat and everyone that operator could come into contact with, and it will make our waters safer. It took a horrific accident to make this situation real for people, but through this law Brianna is saving lives and her love lives on.” Gov. Cuomo also announced that the State Parks will create a promotional campaign to spread the word. The law will be fully implemented by 2025. For more information, visit GOVERNOR.NY.GOV.

Three organizations around the Great Lakes have teamed up to reduce the number of invasive zebra and quagga mussels in the water. The Great Lakes Commission, International Joint Commission and the Great Lakes Fishery Commission are also teaming up with federal and local governments in the U.S. and Canada. Invasive mussels began appearing in the Great Lakes region in the late 1980s, and have since caused significant ecological and economic impacts. “The Invasive Mussel Collaborative aims to produce measurable ecologic and economic benefits through advancement of scientifically sound technologies designed to control invasive zebra and quagga mussels,” the collaborative’s website states. “The collaborative intends to align existing science and management goals into a common agenda for invasive mussel control by providing a framework for communication and coordination, identifying the needs and objectives of resource managers, prioritizing the supporting science, and recommending communication strategies.” For more information, visit INVASIVEMUSSELCOLLABORATIVE .NET.

Century-Old Shipwreck Found in Lake Superior
In July, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS) announced that it had discovered a centuryold shipwreck off the Keweenaw Peninsula in Lake Superior. The steamer, S.R. Kirby, sank near Eagle Harbor, Michigan, in May 1916. According to GLSHS, Kirby was a 294-foot-long wooden-hulled steamer that was built in 1890 in Wyandotte, Michigan. She now rests in 800 feet of water. Of the 22 crewmembers, only two were rescued. “We found what appeared to be wreckage last year while searching in this area,” notes the Shipwreck Society’s Director of Marine Operations Darryl Ertel Jr. “We weren’t certain that it was a shipwreck, but were able to take a closer look this year. We thought it might have been the Kirby.” Ertel and his team used the Shipwreck Society’s ROV to positively identify the vessel as Kirby. To read more about the shipwreck, visit SHIPWRECKMUSEUM.COM.

Yamaha Marine Creates Device to Prevent Marine Pollution
In a partnership with Clearwater Mills, Yamaha Marine is creating a device that picks up trash and plastic in efforts to reduce and prevent marine pollution. The land-based and electrically operated device, derived from Clearwater Mills’ popular Mr. Trash Wheel, will debut in 2020. The original Mr. Trash Wheel is moored, buoyant and has, to date, prevented 1,200 tons of debris from entering the Baltimore Harbor. “If we can make this pilot project work, we will have created something we can use to keep debris out of marshlands, coastal waterways and off the beaches all along the Atlantic Coast,” says John Kellett, president of Clearwater Mills. The device is part of Yamaha’s Rightwaters sustainability campaign, a national program focused on water conservation, habitat restoration and projects to reduce marine debris. Sackets Harbor, NY

ho says you can’t travel back in time? There is a way, and all it takes is pointing your boat to the Lake Ontario port of Sackets Harbor, New York. The former War of 1812-era military outpost is now a charming and postcard-picturesque village. Strolling streets lined by buildings that are two centuries old, you experience history unfold at a soak-it-all-in pace. Granted, modernity has imposed itself on the community, but the kernel of connection remains: Imagine marching alongside soldiers on fields of battle, brushing shoulders with U.S. Navy officers and ship captains along the picturesque waterfront, and sharing the space with early settlers in historic shops and restaurants. More than 200 years old and with roots in military conflict, the village naturally appeals to history lovers, but with plenty of recreational opportunities — ranging from boutique shops and ice cream parlors to nearby wineries — anyone looking for a quiet getaway will embrace Sackets Harbor’s unique character. “Sackets Harbor is a beautiful village with much to offer visitors, but its appeal seems to all trace back to its rich history, for good reason — the community is a New York State Heritage Area,” says Constance Barone, a lifelong resident, local historian and site manager for Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site. Trapped in time Prior to the War of 1812, Sackets Harbor was a quiet hamlet. With its deep harbor and strategic location on Lake Ontario, the village took on increased importance when Britain and the United States went to war. Sackets Harbor became a base for American military operations in the region and, owing to the ready supply of lumber in the

surrounding woodlands, developed into a major shipbuilding center as the combatants struggled to gain dominance over Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. American forces took initiative in the spring of 1813 by attacking and quickly capturing York (present-day Toronto), then the capital of Upper Canada. In retaliation, the British and Canadians launched a raid against the American shipyards at Sackets Harbor, which lay within easy striking distance of the British at Kingston. The attack, led personally by General Sir George Prevost, governor-general of Canada, began in the early hours of May 29 with landfall a mile west of the village. The British quickly scattered some New York militiamen but then met stiffer resistance from U.S. regular troops stationed at Sackets Harbor. After a three-hour fight, the British realized they would not be able to take the village and retreated to their ships. Today, the battlefield is preserved as the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site, a 71-acre park that was recognized in the 2007 National Park Service Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Historic Preservation Study for its remarkable integrity. Walking the grounds allows visitors to envision the battle as it unfolded two centuries ago. Two restored officer’s houses, a restored 1850s navy shipyard and costumed interpreters offer a fascinating look at 1800s military life. The visitor center has a gift shop that boasts one of the best selections of War of 1812 books anywhere. Be sure to stroll to the lakeshore, where an exhibit showcases military artifacts retrieved by archeologists from Lake Ontario. “Don’t overlook the Memorial Tree Grove, with a monument raised in 1913 at the 100th anniversary of the battle,” Barone says. Time your visit for the annual Grand Tactical re-enactment weekend (July 25-26, 2020), when the sight comes alive with the booming of cannons and crackle of musketry as hundreds of authentically costumed re-enactors relive the Battle of Sackets Harbor. The Sackets Harbor Bicentennial Trail, an easily walked footpath lined with informative signs, links the Historic Site to Sackets Harbor proper, replete with heritage buildings that give the village the appearance of a community trapped in time. “Village streets are lined with grand architecture built after the war when people envisioned Sackets Harbor — with its natural harbor and naval facilities — would become a thriving lake port,” Barone says. “The opening of the Erie Canal, and later railways, undermined the village’s prosperity but thankfully these buildings remain as a reminder of those heady days of the early 19th century.” Any visit to Sackets Harbor should begin with the Augustus Sacket Home, built in 1802 by the village’s founder, which

today houses the Visitor Center. Learn about the community’s history through exhibits, artifacts and an informative video. For additional historical context, staff will direct you to the quaint Pickering-Beach Museum, which offers a peek into the lives of people residing in Sackets Harbor during the 19th century when the village was at the peak of its prosperity. “An idealized storybook village” The village is a fun place to browse and shop. Unique stores, many housed in charming historic buildings, sell everything from clothing and candles to gourmet coffee, antiques and Amish goods. A favorite among visitors is The Handmaiden’s Garden, a collection of three unique shops in one: Sackets Soapworks, Mystical Musings and Tea Thyme. Others shops that lure you in off the street include Calla Lilies Gift Shop and Main Street Crafts and Drafts. For art aficionados, visit The Arts Association of Northern New York and The Gallery Fine Art, both on Main Street. Take a break from browsing to enjoy ice cream at Stradler’s Saturdays, Sundaes and More. Hunger will inevitably come a-calling. Thankfully, there are plenty of restaurants in the village that blend unique atmosphere, savory food and warm hospitality. Start your day with coffee and baked treats at Chrissy Beanz Bakery or a stack of pancakes at Nu Pier Restaurant. For lunch, follow your nose to Good Fellas Pizzeria, famed for its delicious brick-oven pies, pasta dishes and Wine Wednesdays with $2 glasses of wine. As the sun begins to set, thoughts inevitably turn to dinner. For fine dining, opt for Tin Pan Galley, the No. 1 ranked restaurant in the Thousand Islands, which aptly refers to itself as “a cozy little restaurant, in a very old building, in one of the smallest historic towns in the U.S.A.” If pub fare is more your speed, head to Sackets Harbor Brewing Company, one of New York’s first microbreweries. Bite into a towering burger and try the signature 1812 Ale. Boaters will love Sackets Boathouse Restaurant and Bar. Inhabiting a 1940s boathouse with a deck that hangs over
Black River Bay with the wide expanse of Lake Ontario beyond, the restaurant boasts arguably the finest view in town. The food is every bit as memorable. Rest your head for the night at Harbor House Inn. Conveniently located in the heart of the village with restaurants and shops at its doorsteps, the charming boutique inn is an ideal base from which to explore Sackets Harbor. “The hotel has an amazing history,” explains manager Marsha Maxon. “It was built in the 1920s as a dog biscuit factory of the Imperial Dog Food Corporation, became a plant processing dates imported from Iraq in the 1970s, and then was Ontario Place Hotel for 40 years under my father-in-law, Murray. Recent renovations have given it a warmer, more homey and quaint feeling. With the renovations came a name change to Harbor House Inn, which better reflects its character.” Harbor House Inn is a reflection of Sackets Harbor, which is the definition of a quaint and charming village. “Sackets Harbor is an idealized storybook village,” Maxon says. “I remember walking down Main Street last autumn and thought I was on a movie set. It is picture-perfect — there’s no other way to describe it.” Sackets Harbor’s rich history serves as the foundation of its appeal. While enjoying the many attractions of the community, look closely at the shops and restaurants, the historic plaques and the preserved landscape of War of 1812 battlefields, and question who might have stood where you stand centuries before. DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE BY C A P T. F R A N K L A N IE R
Galley Gourmet Simple updates to make your galley the best space onboard. ant to make your “galley slave” feel more like a galley gourmet? Take a look at these 10 easy upgrades to make galley duty more pleasurable for the entire crew. Sink and faucet upgrades Too many galleys feature a single, diminutive sink that’s unfit for food preparation, dish washing or pretty much any other galley-sink related task. Upgrading to a deep, full-size single — or better yet, double — sink is fairly straightforward and will make a marked improvement on most any galley operation. Swapping out that old dual-control faucet with a single-lever unit will make one-handed operation a breeze. Sinks featuring extendable, pull-out faucets provide even more flexibility. Increase counter space When it comes to food preparation and serving, most galleys are notoriously short on counter space — doubly so when entertaining guests. A quick, easy way to supplement existing workspace is to install a cutting board over the galley sink. Wood and synthetic cutting boards come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, making it easy to find one that will fit your sink with minimal trimming. Another option is fitting a removable top over your stove burners for use when preparing cold foods.
(Top) Upgrading to a deep sink can make many galley chores easier, from food preparation to dish washing. (Middle) A removable cover over your stove top is a great way to increase galley workspace. (Bottom) Nothing says fancy galley living like a fixed trash can.

Can you see the light? Nothing makes a galley seem more cramped than poor lighting. Replacing outdated incandescent lights with modern units featuring florescent or LED technology will not only improve available light, but also reduce energy consumption. Upgrading or installing additional lighting over the stove, sink and food preparation areas will go a long way toward reaching galley nirvana. For vision-safe nighttime galley work during those overnight passages, choose units that provide both white and red light options. Existing lighting can be improved by painting or covering dark, less reflective galley surfaces with lighter colors or Formica-type materials. Storage is good No matter how you slice it, you just can’t have too much galley storage. Take a moment to step back and look at your galley and surrounding areas as a whole, not only to visualize ways to better utilize existing space, but also to ferret out hidden or unused areas to increase storage options. The built-in trash bin aboard a boat I once owned lifted out to reveal a huge (in boat storage terms anyway) area of wasted space between the sink and hull. Although wedge
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
shaped (as the outboard side was the hull) it was a perfect place to store items like bulk dry goods (like a bag of rice), oversized pots and other infrequently used galley utensils. Pots and pans that are used less frequently might be stored under the stove, sink or even the galley floorboards. I installed several shelves in an underutilized hanging locker adjacent to the galley aboard my latest boat, converting it into an easily accessible storage locker for cans, dry goods and other food. Get some air Nothing enhances the quality of galley life like plenty of cool, fresh air, particularly during the heat of summer. Good ventilation provides a multitude of benefits, from rapid removal of smoke and food odors generated while cooking to the elimination of minor carbon monoxide buildup and its negative effects on crew health (headaches, seasickness, etc.). Even something as simple as installing an adjustable galley fan can make a huge difference in aiding ventilation. Add a real trash can Nothing says fancy galley living like a fixed trash can. Sure, that diminutive plastic can under the sink works, but the convenience and luxury of a built-in, kitchen-bag-sized bin (possibly topped with a cutting board lid) has to be experienced to be believed. Dish drying rack A dish drying rack is simple, yes — but convenient as heck. It not only makes dish washing easier, but also cuts down on wet towels. Look around and find one that fits into your sink, which provides both an easy way to dry dishes and store the rack when not in use. Install a “vacuum flask” holder Why? Because insulated, vacuum flasks (like a Thermos) rock, and a holder or rack that keeps them secure and handy is just the ticket for those cold days or overnight passages. Just heat up water at the beginning of the trip and crewmembers will have hot water for tea, coffee, hot chocolate, instant soups and more for hours to come. Move up to a wall-mounted dispenser Everyone loves the convenience of paper towels, but where do you put them so they’re out of the way yet easy to grab when needed? Same thing with tin foil and cling-wrap — they’re always clogging up your drawers or otherwise impossible to find when actually needed. Triple roll wall-mounted dispensers keep each of these in easy reach and are compact to boot — perfect for that bare spot on the galley bulkhead! ★

Dash Refresh With the right expertise, insight and technology, a new dashboard panel can breathe new life — and a little magic — into an older boat. etrofitting is a hot topic among longtime boat owners, and for good reason. Not only does it add value to your vessel for eventual resale, it breathes new life into an older boat, giving you many more years of on-water enjoyment. Most of us are well aware that we can repower our boats to give them next-generation performance. We also know that we can refresh canvas and upholstery, or add amenities like Bimini tops, sun shades and marine stereos. We might not, however, consider the possibilities at the dashboard. We should, because real magic can happen here — with the right expertise, insight and technology, of course.

The why — and how — of a new look In 1998, a family of avid South Florida boaters founded a company called Tecnografic Inc. in Fort Lauderdale. With the goal of producing dash panels for large boatbuilders that were looking for something different and more creative, the company became the only North American licensee of Taica Cubic printing decoration technology in the marine industry. This unique, highly specialized, hydro-dipping ink-water transfer process allowed Tecnografic to make panels with astonishingly realistic patterns, including wood grain, natural finishes and high-tech designs. Before they knew it, the family-owned company was doing big volume for high-profile brands like Sea Ray. “It just snowballed, and then people started coming with aftermarket boats,” says CEO Charlotte Belhoste, whose parents started the business. “We built from there. Today, boatbuilders make up roughly 85% of our business; the rest are custom aftermarket projects.” Those aftermarket clients are coming to Tecnografic in ever-greater numbers. Some are doing a full repower and have to replace everything, while others are upgrading their radar or GPS and have discovered that the new units don’t fit. “The gadgets are getting bigger and better, and every year, Garmin and Simrad come out with something new,” Belhoste says. “It’s easier to upgrade the dash than it is to cut fiberglass.” Many boaters simply want to replace an old, faded or cracked panel, enhancing the boat’s look and feel while also adding resale value. “Often, the panels aren’t damaged, but they just don’t look as good as possible,” says Tecnografic’s Samuel Sladon, who works in sales and design. “Giving existing panels a new look is a cost-effective solution.” With the hydro-dipping process, a solvent activates ink within a cutout of the desired pattern. That gives marinegrade plastics the look of real teak or even carbon fiber, which Belhoste says are today’s most popular options.
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
“Regardless of whether we’re working with boatbuilders, dealers, brokers or private owners, everything we do is created to spec with the same high quality,” she says. “We have a wide variety of wood and designer patterns in stock, and we can create a custom look.” The aftermarket segment of Tecnografic’s business continues to grow, expanding each year thanks to boat shows, boat owners’ online forums and social media. Word of mouth has become a veritable force of nature, according to Sladon; people are intrigued and then discover the process is actually a lot of fun. “Boat owners, in general, are always looking for fun,” he says. “That’s why they’re always adding new toys. Upgrading the dash, as it turns out, is fun too.” Bringing it all together. If you’re interested in exploring the options for upgrading your dash panel, all you need to do is provide the make, model and year of your boat, its overall length and width dimensions, and an explanation of what you would like to do. Send a couple of photos as well. “We’ll check to see if we have drawings for that boat,” Belhoste says. “If we don’t have a template, we can work with the owner to generate one.” Occasionally, Tecnografic might ask for the original panel to ensure a perfect fit. Then, once the quote and drawings are in hand and approved, it takes approximately two to three weeks to produce the new panel. “To do the installation, we recommend marine professionals in individual markets,” Sladon says. “Owners also can work with their preferred installers.” “We bring all the pieces together,” Belhoste adds. “In 50% of cases, we’re working primarily with the owners, and in the other 50%, we’re working with the loaders and installers. It really depends on how involved the owners are.” And many owners are deeply involved, particularly those who seek a higher level of customization. This includes flush mounting, screwless panels, backlit switches, colored and indicator lighting, customized logos and more. Tecnografic can even accommodate panels with bends, curves, angles and wedges. Despite the growth in the aftermarket segment, Tecnografic continues to work closely with boatbuilders — and that work, in turn, continues to inspire and inform aftermarket projects. “A Sea Ray owner, for example, asks, ‘What are they doing now, and how can I make my boat look like new?’” Belhoste explains. “Because we work with Sea Ray and other builders, we have insight into what’s happening and can provide the guidance boaters need to create something truly new and fresh.” ★

VHF Radio Makeover Improve the performance and range of your VHF radio. VHF radio is an important piece of equipment to have aboard your vessel, and it’s vital to have it performing at peak capability. When pressing the transmit key, it’s reassuring to know that your signal is as strong and clear as possible. By understanding how your radio equipment works, that reassurance can be easily achieved.

Selecting the correct antenna Fixed-mount radios all transmit at the same maximum power allowed by the FCC, which is 25 watts. Other than setting the radio to its maximum output power, there is not much that can be done to improve the radio’s performance. The antenna and its height, cabling and connectors are where the most performance can be gained. VHF signals travel by line of sight so the higher the antennas sit, the farther the capable range. Keep in mind, however, that taller doesn’t always equate to better performance, as gain (annotated as dB) also plays a role. Put simply, dB gain is a way to measure the radiation pattern of an antenna. Look at the dB gain of the antenna keeping in mind that a higher number doesn’t necessarily equate to better performance. Usually, the higher the dB gain, the larger the vessel the antenna should be mounted to. A 3dB gain antenna, usually 3 to 4 feet tall, has a more rounded transmission pattern, which is better for a smaller boat (under 24 feet or sailboats) that is pitching and rolling. A 6dB gain antenna (typically an 8-foot antenna) has a more compressed transmission signal that is better suited for a vessel that will not roll as much (suggested for boats 23 feet and over). Antennas 12 feet or larger are usually 9dB variants and have a narrower and more concentrated transmission, which can produce more range as long as the boat is not rocking too much. Selecting the wrong dB antenna can affect performance in rougher waters. The difference in antenna quality Not all antennas are created equal. Inexpensive, lower-end antennas may look similar to ones many times their price, but they lack the performance of better antennas. These low-cost antennas are typically nothing more than a stripped back coaxial cable held in place with foam collars. Better antennas will have single or multiple copper elements running the length of the antenna along with thicker-walled housings. Generally, as price increases, the number and type of elements increases, boosting performance exponentially. Better quality antennas will also have lower-loss cables attached. Economy
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
antennas usually have RG-58 cabling, whereas higher-end antennas will have either RG-8X, RG-213 or LMR 400 cabling. Signal loss and cable efficiency can be significant when comparing the RG-58 cable to the others. Check the cables If a change of antenna is not the plan then check the cable and connectors on the existing setup. Multiple connections, chaffing and poorly installed connectors can all affect performance. Some antennas come with connectors that plug into the VHF radio that requires soldering or crimping to coaxial cable as mentioned above. If not installed correctly, they can impede performance. If soldering is not your thing, then try a compression fitting made by Shakespeare Marine; it’s simple to install with no soldering required. Try to keep cuts and connections to a minimum as they can also affect performance. The lowdown on handhelds Handheld VHF radios are very simple and do not have a lot of possibilities for upgrading performance, but there are a few things that can be done to maximize their potential. The main factor to remember with a handheld is that their range, as with any VHF, is restricted to line of sight. Wherever the top of the antenna can see is where it can transmit to. So one easy way to instantly improve range is to get to the highest point possible on your boat and transmit from there. Another performance boost includes making sure the battery is fully charged. Some radios offer an optional alkaline battery pack which can be loaded with AAA or AA batteries and offer a great back-up to the rechargeable battery. If you’re having trouble reaching out with your handheld, check to make sure the power is set to its maximum; for most radios, this will be the 5- or 6-watt setting. Check 1-2-3 Of course, a radio check is the best way to ensure your radio is operating correctly. There is now a new way to get immediate and positive confirmation: Sea Tow is sponsoring an automatic radio check system. Simply tune your radio to channel 24, 25, 26, 27 or 28, depending on your location; go to SEATOW.COM to find out which channel will work in your area. Transmit a radio check as you normally would and listen for a recording of your transmission, letting you know exactly how you sounded. It’s as simple as that! ★

Can You Hear This? Boat horns and their proper usage.
Blow your horn Like car blinkers, sounding the horn communicates your intentions to other boaters. Sound devices, including an air horn (electric or compressed air) and a whistle, are required in all boats less than 39 feet, 4 inches in length. Vessels longer than that length must add a bell. Marine compressed air horns blare at 116 decibels and are good for boats up to 65 feet, but these can run out. Boats usually come with a closed electric-powered horn that works when the battery is hooked up at 105 decibels or slightly higher. The backup is a boat whistle, usually with fewer decibels. Many boaters replace their factory-installed horns with similar ones producing higher decibels, air horns, or even with trumpet horns. Trumpet horns have a long throat attached to a wide bell which easily gets the attention of a Labor Day party cruiser, especially with 150 decibels and higher, priced about $30 and up. Check the owner’s manual for your horn’s decibel level and opt to change out a wimpy horn. Horn etiquette About a half-mile away from meeting a boat head-on, crossing in front of another boat, or overtaking one, the horn is used to identify specific maneuvering actions. A Short Blast (SB) lasts about one second. A Prolonged Blast (PB) lasts about four to six seconds and a Warning Signal uses five short blasts. Meeting head-on: Like meeting a car on the highway from the opposite direction, both cars will pass by each other on their left side. Normally, the same is true on the water. Use 1 SB, move away from the boat, the other boat replies with 1 SB, then both “pass to port.” However, if you must pass starboard to starboard, use 2 SB and then respond in kind. Crossing near a vessel: If the “give-way” vessel moves with her bow pointed toward the port side of the “stand-on” vessel, she gives way by making an early and considerable effort to keep clear and not cross in front of the “stand-on”

on’t you hate wimpy boat horns? “Meep, meep,” instead of “BEEP, BEEP,” sounds more like the Roadrunner. Frankly, you can yell louder. Sound travels faster in warm air over water. However, it’s the decibels that make the difference; the larger the decibel, the louder the horn and the less wimpy it is. With loud engines, partying boaters and stereos turned up, it’s hard to get a boater’s attention using a wimpy horn. Horns should grab the attention of a dock worker, alert someone with hearing problems and sound loudly in bad weather.
Other horn uses • Sound 1 PB for blocked visibility like around a bend. • Sound 1 PB when leaving a dock or berth. 1 short blast • Sound 3 SB when backing up or operating stern propulsion. In restricted/poor visibility like smoke, fog, rain or snow, blast out every two minutes; underway powerboats use 1 PB, or if stopped/anchored use 2 PB. When anchored, not under command, or the boat is not easily maneuvered (like when fishing, towing or pushing HELEN AITKEN is a boating another vessel) sound 1 PB plus 2 SB. writer, photographer and The exception: Use radio communication with larger science educator from ships on Channel 13 to indicate your intentions rather eastern North Carolina. than use sounding devices. vessel. The “give-way” vessel signals with 1 SB (moves starboard), and the “stand-on” vessel signals likewise. Also, when a powerboat meets a sailing vessel, the sailboat becomes the “stand-on” vessel and the powerboat must give way. Meeting in Overtaking a boat: If you are about to initiate a maneuver Head-on to overtake/pass a boat, you are the “give-way” boat and she is Situations the “stand-on” boat. The “give-way” boat must take the action early to warn and stay clear of the Passing Port to Port “stand-on” boat before and during the maneuver. If both vessels are powerboats, the “give-way” 1 short blast boat must identify the maneuver with the correct blast. It’s easy to remember the number of blasts. If you are the “give-way” boat, pass the “stand-on” 1 short blast vessel on your port (left) side. “Port” has one syllable and you use one short blast. If you pass a vessel on your starboard (right) side, “Starboard” has two syllables, therefore you Passing Starboard to Starboard use two short blasts. Inland rules require the “stand-on” vessel to respond in kind if they 2 short blasts agree with the maneuver, using the same number of blasts. However, if the “stand-on” vessel doesn’t understand the blast, or disagrees with the maneuver, it replies with a warning 2 short blasts signal of 5 SB. This applies to sailing vessels, too. The overtaking vessel becomes the “giveway” vessel and when overtaken she becomes Meeting Head to Head the “stand-on” vessel. Signal your intentions using the horn. 1 short blast

W
isconsin-based Cruisers Yachts is a well-known boatbuilder that heavily focuses on engineering and design to make the on-water experience the best it can be. Fulfilling this ideal is the 38 GLS — a bowrider with exciting outboard power and the kind of amenities found on much larger boats. “This boat can be used to take the family to the beach as a day cruiser or for an extended weekend vacation,” says Matt VanGrunsven, Cruisers Yachts’ director of marketing. With its open design, it’s easy to see that this boat was meant to be at sea. Seating arrangements include the aft-facing bench that easily swivels to face the starboard beach door. Given the triple outboard configuration taking up most of the swim platform area, the beach door offers you an additional platform to enjoy time at your favorite anchorage. Additional seating is located up in the bow lounge and a pair of dinettes in the amidships area. There is even a suitable galley — sink, refrigerator and storage — with space for an optional grill. A wetbar with stools

provides even more entertaining opportunities. There are also accommodations below with an aft cabin, head with standing shower and a U-shaped dinette that easily converts into a sleeping area. “We resin-infuse the hull and have applied a first-class running surface to match the lightness with outboards. And we went a bit fancier with our stitching techniques and materials,” VanGrunsven says. “We have maintained our build expertise and applied all the latest technology has to offer.” Her long list of standard equipment includes an opening sunroof, cabin microwave and refrigerator, and a 120V central vacuum system. Premium options, such as the 5 kW diesel generator, salon TV and top-of-the-line electronics, can create a Cruisers Yachts 38 GLS that is a personal statement of your own. Once you get this deep-V, triple 300-hp Mercury Verado outboard-powered beauty on the water, there is no stopping you! Just don’t forget to spin your favorite hat around. H

O
ne can trace Jeanneau’s heritage back to 1957 when a young Henri Jeanneau began a boatbuilding enterprise whose DNA includes innovative and visionary designs that stand out from the pack. To that end, Jeanneau presents its new NC 895 Sport, a boat combining all the excitement of outboard performance with that of a comfortable family cruiser. With her modern styling, enclosed pilothouse with driverside access door, slightly raked forward windshield, and ample seating both forward and aft, the NC 895 Sport is eye-catching underway and dockside. Boarding is made safe and easy via the starboard aft gate or from a door forward on the same side. There is also a sliding door to the pilothouse that can provide the driver with quick access to the dock while piloting solo. Once aboard, you are greeted with a surprisingly spacious deck and salon area for a boat this size. The cockpit, as with all the deck areas aboard, offers teak underfoot. The transom bench here is nearly full beam and is adjoined by portside seating, which has a removable table extending

right to the pilothouse. With this aft seat mounted on a sliding frame, it can be easily moved forward allowing the engines to be brought up out of the water. Walk through to the salon by way of a convenient sliding glass door and you and your guests can get quite comfortable in the portside dinette area, which converts into a sleeper. The helm is flooded with ambient light thanks to the big forward windshield, oversized windows to either side, aft sliding glass door and a pair of sunroofs overhead. For preparing a quick snack or an alfresco dinner aboard, the small but adequate galley is located just aft of the helm. More surprises await while visiting the accommodations below. Here you will find two berths: One in the forepeak and the other situated underneath the salon. Both are well-laid-out and bright. Access to a private, spacious stand-up head is located to starboard. With its contemporary styling, exciting performance, and attention to fit and finish, the NC 895 Sport is the kind of versatile family cruiser designed for optimum use whether out for a day or extended time away from the dock. Regulator 31
B
ack in 1988, Regulator Marine founders Joan and Owen Maxwell had a vision for a new center console design, one that would fulfill the need for an offshore fishing platform with a non-negotiable promise of safety and quality. And that is the very essence of what the Regulator 31 runs on. While technology has improved the materials available in today’s builds, each and every Regulator is still hand built. This means the hull is comprised of four parts with absolutely no wood found throughout. Before any boat hits the water, there are constant reviews, checks, re-checks and quality-control issues that must be satisfied way ahead of delivery to new owners. From bow to stern, the 31 is all Regulator — rigged and ready to handle anything found in both inshore and, especially, offshore waters. It all starts up in the bow area with the anchor locker, 230-quart center forward storage, a 500-quart in-deck fishbox that can also serve as a rod locker, and a pair of 210-quart insulated fish/dry storage boxes, one found to starboard and one to port. The entire bow area has an integrated handrail. Just forward of the center

console is a seat, beneath which is an insulated cooler, and fully aft is a transom fishbox and livewell. The Regulator 31 offers a console worthy of any skipper dedicated to chasing big fish. The console is outfitted with an easily recognized T-top, one whose options include a pair of Taco 390 Outrigger bases with 18-foot telescoping poles or two 20-foot carbon fiber poles. A long list of standard features includes factory-installed Garmin offshore electronics package, SeaStar power steering, a stand-up head, dual seats with flip-up backrests, a full tackle center and four rod holders, among many others. First-rate options to upgrade your Regulator 31 are a bow thruster, Seakeeper2 gyro, FLIR M232 thermal camera, remotecontrolled LED spotlight and a host of additional choices. Just wait until you slide those throttles forward and call on a pair of Yamaha F300 four-stroke engines with Digital Electronic Controls. Those same outboards are also available with Yamaha Helm Master with Set Point. While the Regulator 31 is all about fishing, it still can be the kind of boat that will thrill family and friends. H

ailfish is known for designing boats — whether center or dual console, walk-arounds or bay boats — that are made for both family outings as well as deep-water action. And with the 290 CC, Sailfish easily raises the bar. The 290 CC runs on its Variable Degree Stepped (VDS) hull, which translates to having three distinct hull bottoms. The first, with its deep deadrise, cuts through the water, while the next two acts to provide lift and stability. With an ample bow flare to damp down spray, the combination results in a safe and comfortable ride when conditions may unexpectedly change. And with all composite construction with zero wood used anywhere, as well as the hull and deck being reinforced with Kevlar and carbon fiber, there is built-in durability and strength for peace of mind while underway. High cockpit depth, 16 rod holders, a 30-gallon transom livewell and a 35-gallon leaning post livewell start things off. There’s locking rod storage, as well as a pair of 260-quart in-sole fish boxes with overboard drains and a newly designed console dash that allows for the latest in large-screen electronics.
Draft: 21" Weight: 8,000 lbs.
After one notices all the fishing amenities, a closer look reveals another side of the Sailfish 290 CC — one that has great appeal for the family to enjoy. Comfortable bow seating, easy access to the aft swim ladder, a walk-through transom door, a freshwater shower, plenty of storage areas for time out on the water and cup holders are all standard. To make your boat something really special, a host of options include a removable table and bow shade, windlass with roller, Fusion stereo system, retractable ski tow bar, electric head and many others. “With our family friendly features, your Sailfish transforms into the perfect platform for an exciting family day on the water,” according to Sailfish. Being a spirited performer is also a big part of the Sailfish 290 CC. Power options include a pair of Yamaha F250XCA or 300XCA and twin Mercury 250XL/300XL Verado engines. Out for a day or offshore, the Sailfish 290 CC will fulfill all your expectations and have you looking forward to each and every time you let your lines go. H

R
enowned Australian boatbuilder Maritimo introduced its new X-series with the first model, the X60, premiering in America last fall. Now, the second sport coupe in this line, the X50, arrives in the U.S. for the Newport International Boat Show and then travels down the Eastern seaboard to shows and events, including the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The X-series features unique styling and a signature aft cabin with an opening transom that connects the cabin to the swim platform. The X-series is designed by Tom Barry-Cotter — the son of Maritimo’s founder Bill Barry-Cotter. Tom’s modern touch can be seen throughout, from the sleek look of the curved cabin top to the Eurostyle interior that pairs stainless steel, varnished wood and high-end fabrics and wall coverings. The X-series is not just about aesthetics; in addition to being an
accomplished designer, Tom is a top offshore powerboat racer and understands how to maximize performance in shaft-driven boats. He incorporated that knowledge into the X50, noting that the customizable aft accommodations increase the total living space while helping balance the hull, allowing for reduced shaft angles that enhance performance, fuel economy and ride comfort. All of this combines to create an efficient, stylish cruiser that is fun to drive.

Signature aft cabin
I caught up with Tom and the new Maritimo X50 at the Sydney International Boat Show in order to examine and test the boat before she arrives in the U.S. Tom explained to me that performance is imperative in all Maritimos, and the X50 needed to maintain the speed, handling and efficiency of her larger siblings. Next, he packed as much comfort and usable cabin space as possible into this mid-size cruiser. Finally, he had to do all this without ruining the lines of the boat. X-series boats must have the contoured styling and soft lines that keep the boat looking sporty and modern. The profile of the X50 is sleek and inviting. The hull has substantial freeboard with angular hull windows and above-deck gunnels raked back, creating a tapered bow. Stainless railings with angled stanchions jutting forward create a purposeful look and keep the side decks safe. The blackened windshield slants back, flowing into the curved cabin top, which transitions into a wedge-shaped cockpit overhang with radars and sat domes inked out in black above. The swim platform can be equipped as a tender lift. Twin stairwells lead to the cockpit above, concealing storage for fenders and lines. The transom has a blackened window and hatch that looks deceptively normal. A button’s touch then raises the entire transom on actuators revealing the cabin below and

connecting it to the swim platform. This signature X-series feature provides buyers with usable space few other boats this size have and allows for some appealing options. The aft cabin can be used as a tender garage, a twin berth cabin, or a “Beach Club.” The most versatile option, the Beach Club, features access stairs from the transom, adjacent to a counter that looks aft, facing toward the swim platform. The opposite bulkhead has a wetbar, storage and a wide-screen TV. To port is a full-size head with separate shower compartment. Beneath the aft counter, a double bed conveniently folds out, converting this into a sleeping cabin. This arrangement allows owners and guests to relax in comfort and style while getting close to the water. Ideal when anchored, this cabin provides bathers a respite from the sun and access to the head and shower without bringing water through the cockpit and salon. On a temperate night with the transom open, the beach club offers a unique view of the water, creating a romantic spot to stargaze while relaxing at the counter or lounging in bed. The aft cabin connects to the salon by an internal staircase with an engine room access door. The X50 has a simple, uncluttered engine room with standing headroom and easy access to engines and equipment. Shaft drives allow for this unique aft cabin and engine room set up, which would be difficult to accomplish with pods. Maritimo specializes in shaft-driven
boats because of their efficiency, simplicity and performance, but the aft cabin layout and sizable engine room are added benefits.
Step inside
When entering the X50 from the swim platform, there is access down into the aft cabin with the transom open or up to the cockpit on either side. The cockpit has seating aft with stainless drink holders and a wetbar with electric barbecue forward to starboard. Black paneled glass doors to the salon fold completely, opening the galley directly to the cockpit. As a Maritimo hallmark, this layout works well for entertaining. A slight step leads into the galley/salon and the entire area becomes one big connected space when the doors are opened wide. Other X50 features are a full-height refrigerator/freezer, a tall pull-out pantry with convenient fold-out shelves and a center island, which houses an ice maker. Corian counters contrast the satin-varnished walnut interior. A deep stainless sink, four-burner Miele cooktop, microwave/ convection oven and dishwasher complete the galley. A large opening sunroof overhead provides light and fresh air, and transitions from the galley to the salon. Seating in the salon is on both sides with a larger U-shaped settee and flip-top dining table to port. The helm to starboard has twin, adjustable bucket seats. Compass, engine monitors, controls and twin MFDs are all within close
proximity. Throttles adjacent to the opening side window can be reached easily from the helm, as can an optional Yacht Controller joystick. The joystick controls the engines and bow and stern thrusters, making for easy, close hand maneuvering — even with shafts. Visibility aft from the helm is good, looking across the cockpit. The Yacht Controller works well and its remote acts as a wing station, providing control with views of either side and the swim platform. Three window panels provide good visibility forward, whether standing or seated, that is only impeded slightly by the wider corner mullions. The space between the seat and tilt wheel is a bit tight when standing but is better when seated.
An excellent Great Lakes cruiser The X50 performed admirably running up the coast of Australia. Maritimo’s hydraulic steering tracks straight with no effort on the wheel even in a swell and is responsive when maneuvering. The boat leaned naturally into a high-speed 37 mph hard turn and only slowed to 33 mph, regaining speed quickly once centered. Between 1500 and 2500 RPM range only dropped slightly from 431-369 miles, allowing the boat to run at any speed from 16-36 mph without paying much of a penalty for speed. With no tabs cruising offshore at 26.5 mph in a slight rolling swell, the fuel
burn was 43 gph at 77% load and felt like you could run all day. The speed, range and efficiency of the X50 make her an excellent Great Lakes cruiser that is equally suited for any ocean. Her bridge clearance of 16 feet, 4 inches prohibits Erie Canal travel but allows passage on much of the Great Loop. Below-deck accommodations include a full-beam master suite with a centerline queen bed, 6-foot, 2-inch or better headroom, and lots of storage. Amenities include a flat-screen TV, side windows with opening portholes, a vanity with a cushioned cube seat, a hanging locker with mirror and a lounge seat. The master head constricts to 13 inches between the wall and toilet but opens up at the sink, and the shower is spacious with a bench and basketball-playercapable headroom of 7 feet, 8 inches under an opening hatch. Guest accommodations include a VIP forward queen that is angled for walk-around access, an opening hatch and a hanging locker. The head opens into the VIP and the corridor. With the Beach Club bed in use, there are three cabins and three heads all on a 50-footer! The new Maritimo X50 is a sporty cruiser that performs well, is packed with features, and is worth a serious look. Maritimo delivers quality construction, ease of maintenance and performance in a stylish, fun to drive package. Maximizing space throughout, including the versatility of the aft cabin, provides additional benefits not seen in other boats this size. ★

REINVENTION THROUGH REIMAGINATION. BY CAPT. TOM SERIO
T
he old adage “new and improved” is a bit of an oxymoron. How can something be improved if it’s new, and vice versa? Sea Ray introduced a new SLX 350 recently, but they already had one. So, is it truly new and improved? After careful review of the details and a spirited sea trial, it’s apparent what they did; Sea Ray reinvented the SLX 350 through reimagination. LAKELANDBOATING.COM

OCTOBER 2019
41
POWER UP A significant change to the SLX 350 is that it now comes with outboard power. Bolt on a few Mercury Verado outboard gas engines and enjoy the freedom. Maintenance issues have improved with the outboards versus the inboard/outboard configuration. There are no sterndrives to deal with, damaged u-joints or ripped bellows. And the inboard powerplants were housed in an ever-so-cozy engine room. Nowadays, performance with outboards is far better than even just 10 years ago. They run cleaner and are much quieter, too. Our test ride for the day, hull No. 1 with twin Mercury 350-hp Verado inline 6-cylinder outboards, didn’t disappoint from a performance aspect. Keith Miller, Sea Ray’s regional business manager, took me through the boat and out for a ride to run through the steps. Miller was well-versed with the features and specifics of the 350, answering all my questions with the zest and passion of a proud dad. From the speed aspect, the 350 is quick to respond when the throttles are pushed. In the range up to 10 mph, the burn rate stays well below 10 gph and range is up to 500 nm with full tanks. Nudge the controls to 4000 RPM and the 350 hits 30 mph, burning 23.6 gph. This is a nice, comfortable speed and a sweet spot for the Dynamic Running Surface. We were able to pin the tach at 5500 RPM, getting the needle to 46 mph — a great cut of speed when needed. Handling was impressive too. Sea Ray’s Dynamic Running Surface automatically optimizes the attitude and trim, thanks to large, triangular planes at the aft corners that are contoured to the hull bottom. These trim tabs also improve acceleration and reduce bow rise. They are ideal for wakeboarders as they can shape the wake height and size. For close maneuverability, there’s the standard Mercury joystick feature. Even with outboards, Mercury has tuned the engines precisely to move the 350 in any direction the joystick is pointed or twisted. No need for a bow thruster when the joystick is dialed in perfectly. From the helm, visibility is excellent in all directions. With a few hard-over turns, the 350 responds relatively flat at lower RPM’s, but puts a little shoulder into it at higher speeds. In either case, the operator retains full control from the responsive hydraulic steering and deep-V hull with a 21-degree deadrise at the transom.
AT THE CON Sea Ray has teamed up with Simrad as a default electronics vendor. With more than 50 years in the technology arena, Simrad components can be fully integrated with Mercury Marine components, including Mercury’s VesselView. With a plug-and-play data interface, this was a no-brainer for Sea Ray. At first glance, the helm panel is a piece of blackened glass. Flush mounted are two 9-inch Simrad multifunction displays, making up the Sea Ray Glass Dash console. Even if opting for the larger 12-inch displays, the screens are bright and sharp, and can be toggled through displays including radar, fish finder, charts and engine stats. The dash is sharp-looking, with a bank of buttons below for key systems and a Fusion stereo controller to the left. SmartCraft digital throttle controls and joystick are to the far right on a shelf. Ergonomically it feels better

to keep your right arm lower on the sticks as opposed to reaching towards the helm all the time. And the joystick is well-positioned even if standing backward when heading in reverse. An Isotta Pachu power-assisted tilt steering wheel adds to the style.

Another stand-out feature is the capacity for seating. You can invite friends but you need to make sure all will have a seat when cruising. Sea Ray has boasted about its carrying capabilities before, but with a few changes with the SLX 350, they have really committed to making sure that up to 18 persons can be seated at any given time. Sea Ray expanded the portside settee, adding end cushions to the existing configuration, as well as a large fold-out rectangular teak dining table. To starboard is a curved settee just behind the twin helm seat. Next to that is the on-deck wetbar with stainless sink, Isotherm fridge with pullout drawers, storage and trash. Opt for the Kenyon electric grill to complete your noshing needs. Want more storage? Then look underneath the seats. Many have hinged seat bottoms revealing cavernous compartments. More seating is up forward in the open bow. Arrange the cushions, tables and filler pieces for several seating options, including face-to-face, individual lounger seats or a large sunpad. Aft on the transom is another large seating area. When closed, it’s a casual flat bench. Flip open the back and it’s an aft-facing, cushioned settee. There’s a platform that pulls out from underneath to be used as a footrest. There are more storage compartments back here, including one that is flush to the deck and takes some of the vacant space from the engine room.
CABIN FEVER Not to be forgotten, the 350 has two cabins within the consoles that are sure to delight. Under the portside console is a mini hideaway, with hull window, cushioned seats and filler pads for sleeping — a nice option for the kids or a weekend overnighter. The starboard helm console cabin houses a vacuum-flush head, molded fiberglass liner with sink, vent, wood shelf and a 27-gallon holding tank. If planning to spend time onboard, opt for the TV in the port cabin, as well as AC in both cabins. Keeping everyone cool is the integrated carbon fiber-reinforced hardtop. Offering protection from sun and rain, this is a sporty component that adds to the style of the SLX 350. Add in Bimini curtains for all-weather boating and/or the canvas sunshade in the hardtop. A retractable shade for the aft deck can be added to the hardtop. Credit has to be given to Sea Ray for its storage utilization. There are storage compartments underneath almost every seat and in-deck, cup holders everywhere and power/USB outlets in multiple locations. Included is a dedicated storage spot for a large cooler underneath the center bow seat. Sea Ray adds in many more features and options into the SLX 350, including a Fusion Apollo stereo systems with 6.5-inch speakers and a 10-inch subwoofer, a battery charger, double diamond-stitched upholstery, a pressurized water system, carpeting, teak flooring, additional electronics, a shore power package, a water heater and much more. But amid the muddle are certain other objects — including a sleek and shiny chrome arrow from a speedy Dart runabout and a silverplated 1920s Chris-Craft instrument panel embossed with grape leaves — that reveal the passion David and his brother, Scott, have for bringing antique and classic boats back to their former glory. “We want to preserve history so well that if someone takes one of our boats apart a hundred years from now, they’ll be able to see how and why we restored it,” David says.
Nostalgic at heart Ramsey Brothers Restorations began in 2006, shortly after David and Scott, who were then, respectively, 25 and 31 years old, had both left full-time jobs at an indoor air quality company in Toledo. “Purely by chance, we landed a job on April 1 to totally restore a 1947 Greavette for an owner from Chicago,” David says. The Ramseys grew up in the Toledo area and had learned woodworking in high school. Thanks to parents and grandparents who owned Sandusky, Ohio-made Lyman boats and appreciated things from bygone days, they also had honed mechanical skills patching up cars and boats. “We’re nostalgic at heart,” David says. “Both of us have always been into old stuff, and we admire things that were built with pride.” The brothers were able to take advantage of the Greavette opportunity because they already owned a warehouse in UpTown, an emerging inner-city neighborhood near the renowned Toledo Museum of Art. They had purchased the nondescript brick building
because the duo wanted an affordable place where they could work on old vehicles together. Although the structure is big enough to rent out storage space for other people’s boats, the Ramseys had no intention of going into business. That was until their knack for craftsmanship and creativity garnered boat show awards for the Greavette. “It took us more than a year to redo the Greavette,” Scott says, “and after that, Ramsey Brothers Restorations just evolved.”
A retro gentleman’s racer Today, the brothers operate a full-service restoration shop where attention to detail is their stock-in-trade. In addition to refurbishing or preserving six to eight boats at time, they do repairs and maintenance work on retro engines. “We supply engine parts to customers all over the country,” David says, “and also accumulate parts that we use to build ignition kits.” The projects they’ve tackled range from turning a 25-foot piece of Douglas fir into a steering pole for the Col. James M. Schoonmaker — an iconic 1911 lake freighter that is now a featured exhibit at the National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo — to totally restoring Exhausted, a 1936 Welch runabout powered by her original 85-hp Ford flathead V8 engine. The brothers also have ventured into new construction by launching a sideline — the Dart Boat Company — that they hope will resurrect the short-lived brand of inboard runabouts whose motto was “More Speed Per Horsepower.” With deep, V-shaped hulls designed to slice through choppy water, Darts were made in Lima, Ohio, until 1928, when Admiral Webb C. Hayes, who was a grandson of President Rutherford Hayes, convinced a group of businessmen to acquire the rights to the boats and manufacture them in Toledo. The swift and elegant-looking mahogany Darts suited the exuberant Roaring

Twenties perfectly, and because of Prohibition, bootleggers even used them to transport liquor across Lake Erie. Before the Depression sank Hayes’s boat company in 1933, it shipped Darts to affluent customers throughout the world. “The first speedboat on the Dead Sea was a Dart,” Scott notes. David estimates there are only about 50 remaining Dart boats, but he and Scott have managed to find and acquire several in rough condition that date from 1927 to 1931. Like unearthed dinosaur skeletons, the Darts need to be reconstructed joint by joint and plank by plank. “It’s a lot like archaeology because we get pieces of something and then have to carefully and painstakingly put it back together,” David says. Restoring the boats as authentically as possible also requires the brothers to be detectives and solve mysteries such as the provenance of the 1928 Dart they discovered in a barn in Vermont.
500 companies, he keeps track of job costs. The Ramseys only have one full-time employee, largely because they don’t want or need to do everything in-house. An enormous advantage of restoring boats in Toledo is that its rich heritage of industrial manufacturing, railroads, shipping and refining yields easy access to foundries, pattern shops, metal fabricators, fastener and parts distributors, and the trades. “We offer an end product,” David explains, “and we utilize a lot of outside resources to complete that end product.” Although the brothers realize that some of their restorations could end up being trailer queens, their goal is to provide reliable boats for customers to use and enjoy. “We’re really happy that the first boat we rebuilt is used nonstop,” David says. “Now the owner’s grandkids are getting the pleasure of being in an old boat.” Whether their customers want to restore a pricey Chris-Craft or a more practical
“We think the boat was a rumrunner because the chrome hardware and hull were painted black to dodge the Coast Guard at night,” David says. However, the faded white number, CG-819, that’s painted on the hull also indicates that the Coast Guard probably seized the Dart and put it into service. Compounding the riddle is a barely visible racing number 7 on the side of the Dart. “We found out about a dealer in Boston who raced another Dart and it’s possible that he raced our boat too,” David speculates. Based on their extensive Dart research and collection, the Ramseys designed and built a new model they’ve christened Baby Dart. “It’s our own interpretation of a 1930s Dart but is just 16 feet long with one cockpit that seats two people,” David says. With a remanufactured 109-hp Gray Marine engine, the Baby Dart delivers all the performance and class of a retro gentleman’s racer, but the Ramseys also added their own modern touch — a low-maintenance composite hull consisting of fiberglass and a mahogany veneer.
Lyman, they consistently ask two questions — how much? And how long? — which are a challenge to answer. “As much as people want a specific cost and time frame, they’re impossible to nail down because we always run into something that previously was done poorly or hidden problems like dry rot,” David says. While market value factors into how much people are willing to spend on a restoration, he reminds them that the real value of the finished boat is the enjoyment they’ll get out of it. “I tell customers to think of the money invested in a boat the same way that they think of spending money on a vacation because what they’re buying is an experience,” David says. Of course, a sentimental connection to a boat is also a major motivation for many restorations. The Ramseys revived a 1950s Chris-Craft Continental for a man who remembered sitting behind the wheel on his father’s lap, and a woman hired them to fix up a little Thompson outboard that belonged to her father when she was a kid. Seeing the beautifully restored runabout for the first time moved the lady to tears. “When a customer sheds joyful, nostalgic tears instead of tears over the bunch of money they spent,” David says, “that’s a pretty good compliment.” For more information on Ramsey Brothers Restorations and Dart Boat Company, visit inperson at 329 20th Street, Toledo, OH 43604; call 419-255-2628; or visit RAMSEYBROS.COM

ea Ray. Formula. Monterey. Chris-Craft. Tiara. Stingray. Regal. Cobalt. Hinckley. With every passing year, it seems yet another boatbuilder that used to deal exclusively in inboards or sterndrives comes to market with all-new models featuring outboard power. We’re not talking small, cottage bowriders here either. Walk the docks of major international boat shows like Miami or Fort Lauderdale and you’ll quickly lose count of the 30-, 40- and 50-foot-plus luxury yachts that are rocking outboards in twin, triple or quad installations. We’re talking big boats that can easily accommodate the whole family for a day on the lake, or even for weekend trips with their comfortable accommodations, full galleys and luxurious appointments. Why outboards? Unless you’ve been hiding out in a remote Tibetan village for the past decade or two, you already know that there have been remarkable advances in outboard
motor technology that have come to market. A couple of big outboards lined up on a glistening fiberglass transom doesn’t just look impressive, today’s V6 and V8 outboards represent some of the most advanced engineering on the water, bringing unprecedented levels of performance and fuel efficiency with the lowest emission levels ever. One doesn’t have to be an engineer to appreciate the benefits of saving money on fuel or keeping the air clean and fresh. So what started a few years ago as an eyebrow-raising novelty is quickly becoming today’s norm as more and larger boats appear each season pushed by outboard power.
TECH-SAVVY It sounds overly simplistic, but the biggest factor driving the rise of outboard-powered, cruiser-sized dayboats today is the development of outboard engines big enough to be able to do the job in the first place. “It wasn’t that long ago that a boat
with twin 200s on the back was seen as having big power,” says David Foulkes. He should know; as the CEO of Brunswick Corp., the parent company to Mercury Marine engines and boatbuilders like Sea Ray and Boston Whaler, Foulkes runs one of the largest marine companies in the world. “Today, by comparison, it’s commonplace to see boats with 300s or 400s in triple or quad installations. As the boats have grown increasingly larger, so too have outboard motors, and they’re now at the point where they have plenty of power to propel boats of 40 feet or more.” But there’s more to it than just raw horsepower. The big advantage that outboard engines deliver over sterndrives or inboards is their lighter weight. If we compare two 350-hp engines from Mercury as an example, the Verado 350 outboard weighs in at a comparatively svelte 668 pounds, while the MerCruiser 350-hp 6.2L V8 sterndrive tips the scales at 862 pounds — almost LAKELANDBOATING.COM

WHAT’S
HOT FOR 2020 Here’s a quick guide to notable outboards you’ll see on the water next year. For an up-close sneak peek, visit the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show from October 30 to November 3, where some of these boats will make their global debut.
BOSTON WHALER Boston Whaler made a splash earlier this year with its all-new 380 Realm, which will make its first appearance at the Fort Lauderdale show. Unique design features and eyebrow-raising performance make it an easy boat to like.
COBALT Although not new for 2020, Cobalt’s 23 SC has proven to be one of its more popular models with its full glass cockpit and an innovative interior design that reclaims up to 12 inches of interior space.
CHAPARRAL Introduced at the 2019 Miami Boat Show, Chaparral’s 300 OSX blends high-tech with high-luxury in an elegant and inviting package. New Vista View seating changes position with the push of a button for full-length lounging in the forward or aft positions.
FORMULA Formula has been busy trying to keep up with orders for its red-hot 400 SSC and 430 SSC models, which continue to turn heads with their open, flowing cockpit designs, massive seating spaces, full galleys and roomy accommodations below.
CHRIS-CRAFT America’s oldest boatbuilder celebrates its 145th anniversary in 2020 with an all-new outboard-powered version of its popular Launch 25 GT model. With seating for 11, the Launch 25 GT achieves speeds of near 50 mph with a single 300 outboard.
CROWNLINE Crownline celebrates its 2020 model year with three new outboard-powered models in its XSS Series. The 290 XSS comes with amenities including an electric fold-down arch, a touchscreen dash and an electric flush head.
30% more. And that’s not including the added weight of its separate outdrive, which adds another 120 to 148 pounds to the total package. Yet both powerplants generate the same 350 hp, giving the outboard engine a significant power-to-weight advantage. That edge in power-to-weight translates into greater performance and greater fuel economy. Bayliner Boats, which manufactures both sterndrive- and outboard-powered models, notes that a 150-hp outboard can “match or exceed the performance of sterndrive engines making more than 200 hp while achieving up to 25% lower fuel consumption at cruise speeds.” That’s a pretty compelling argument. “Outboard power continues to gain momentum as the power choice for boaters. Larger boat designs, such as the Grady White Canyon 465 and the 65-foot HCB Estrella, push the boundaries of outboard-powered boats beyond what many people ever thought possible,” says Yamaha Motor President Ben Speciale. “Beams are growing larger verses length, and the extra beam is very consumerfriendly as it provides far more creature comforts. These longer,

wider boats are possible because of the higher torque engines that we now have in the market.” Beyond just being bigger, today’s outboards also boast technological advancements that give them incredible sophistication. Concealed beneath their shiny cowls are myriad innovations that produce more poniesper-cubic-inch, quieter operation with little to no vibration and none of the smoke or fuel smell that used to go hand-in-hand with outboard power. Beyond that, both four-stroke and direct-injection two-stroke designs deliver exceedingly low emissions, giving even more reason to cheer. There’s also the matter of space. Moving the engines aft of the transom opens up cockpit space in sterndrive-powered boats by eliminating the traditional doghouse covering the engine compartment. And while that may not be a concern on larger inboard-powered vessels with their flat cockpit floors, shifting the power to the other side of the transom creates an opportunity to increase storage space by converting the former engine room into a spacious lazarette. That’s a huge advantage because if there’s one thing you can never have too much of on a yacht, it’s space for gear and supplies.
Cost is yet another reason boatbuilders have been increasingly turning toward outboard power. Being mounted outside of the boat, outboards are readily accessible for maintenance, reducing the overall cost of ownership. And unlike inboards or sterndrives, outboards can be tilted up clear of the water when not in use, protecting them from fouling by algae or zebra mussels. Still not convinced? What if we said that modern outboards are easier to drive than ever? Technical refinements and advanced features like automatic trim, digital shift and throttle, and joystick piloting, for example, directly contribute to a more enjoyable experience on the water. At the bleeding edge of this new technology are Bluetooth-enabled engine control systems that let owners buy add-on features as desired, which can be uploaded to the boat via either a direct Wi-Fi connection or through a corresponding smartphone app. The advantage to these systems is that you only pay for features that you’ll actually use and skip those that you won’t. Need a virtual anchor? Just download it. Talk about having your cake and eating it too.
HINCKLEY Hinckley raised a lot of eyebrows last year when it introduced its outboard-powered 40foot Sport Boat 40x and 40c models. With twin 627-hp outboards from Seven Marine, it will reach 63 mph.
REGAL The new 26 XO from Regal packs a lot of boat into its trim 26-foot length thanks to innovative Social Seating, including a multiposition sun lounge. A spacious mid-cabin and unique salon give it even further charm.
MJM The largest outboard-powered yacht in the MJM lineup, the all-new 53z offers a rare combination of performance and luxury. Capable of 50 mph, the 53z boasts every imaginable luxury — including a dual master suite layout with ensuite heads.
SCOUT Scout will be at Fort Lauderdale with its all-new 277 LXF center console, introduced earlier this year as a 2020 model. Joining it will be a brand-new 325 LXF center console making its world debut at the show.
MONTEREY The 385 Super Express remains the flagship in Monterey’s outboard-powered lineup on the strength of its open layout, large cockpit and bow seating spaces, and luxuriously appointed cabin below for comfy overnight trips.
ENJOYING THE GREAT OUTDOORS While the technological advances in outboard engines are certainly impressive, over the past decade we’ve also seen equally groundbreaking advances in boat design that let today’s latest hulls make the most of new power options. It used to be that powerboats of 26 feet or more followed typical cruiser layouts, with the emphasis on below-decks accommodations. If you wanted to sit outside, your choice was to lay on the sunpad up on the bow or cram into a small cockpit in the stern with limited seating options. Which, if you think about it, was perhaps a bit silly since the entire point of going boating is to enjoy the outdoors. That’s why today’s newest boat designs favor open layouts with flow-through access and plenty of seating alfresco. Lifestyle changes have also
SEA RAY With its fold-down swim terrace and traditional Sea Ray luxury, the outboardpowered version of Sea Ray’s SLX 400 never fails to draw ooohs and aaahs from the crowd. Powered by triple 350 Verados, it gets where it’s going in a hurry.
contributed to developments in boat design. For many people, busy personal schedules make getting away for extended cruises impossible, so their trips tend to be more opportunistic — an afternoon here, a morning cruise there, or long weekends away with friends and family. It’s a shift that represents a diminished need for elaborate accommodations below while putting greater emphasis on having more living space up on the main deck. And that’s a fully flat main deck, more often than not. Boating has never been more multi-generational than it is today, making accessibility a key design criteria. No one wants to force aging grandparents or pregnant mothers-to-be to climb over seats or negotiate narrow gangways and steps, which is why flat floors and side entry gates have become commonplace design elements.
STINGRAY Hartsville, South Carolina-based Stingray Boats plans to introduce new 231 DC and 269 DC models this fall, building on the company’s expanding dual console lineup and growing number of outboard-powered offerings. TIARA Tiara plans to turn heads at the Fort Lauderdale docks with its new Tiara Sport 43 LS, with wraparound bow seating, a portside boarding door and an innovative U-lounge in the stern that rotates 180 degrees for enjoying the swim platform.
“You’re seeing a whole new category of boats,” says Brian Davis at Seven Marine. “There’s forward seating, back seating, open cockpits where you can move about with plenty of space to yourself; you’re not crammed in next to everyone else in this little space. But if you want to get inside and you want to sleep overnight, or you want to just watch TV and hang out in the air conditioning, you can do that too. Some of those boats will sleep up to six people, which is surprising because they look like open-deck boats.” Ready for a new ride? Then make a point of checking out the new fleet of versatile, do-anything day cruisers being pushed by shiny outboard motors. With their fresh design approaches and inspiring performance, you might just find them too tempting to resist. H

s a Canadian, I’m always amused when I travel abroad and face the inevitable stereotypes that arise the moment after someone asks me where I’m from. All around the world, people seem to embrace a romantic image of Canada that’s built upon Mounties, igloos, maple syrup and totem poles — a living, breathing snow globe where a hockey game could break out at any moment. And while those things are very much a part of our national fabric, there’s a lot more to Canada than just the Great White North. Indeed, one of our better-kept secrets is the fact we also have a Great White South, which we affectionately refer to as the Canadian Riviera. That little piece of paradise is better known as Norfolk County, the delightful, welcoming region that lies on the north shore of Lake Erie nestled behind the protection of Long Point, and includes the lakeside towns of Port Dover, Turkey Point, St. Williams and Port Rowan. It’s aptly named because the fact is that our Canadian Riviera actually sits farther south than the French one. It sounds unbelievable, but at 42 degrees north latitude, the town of Turkey Point, Ontario, is about 70 miles closer to the equator than the Cote D’azur. So forget about working on that St. Tropez tan; if you want to look good next summer, toast your buns on the beaches right here in Norfolk County. With a year-round population of just 65,000 people, Norfolk County is much like the French Riviera — stunning beaches along the coast, fronting rich farmland as you head inland. As befitting any summer playground, this area is all about sun, sand and good times, with plenty of fine restaurants, excellent wineries, a full slate of events and festivals, and all sorts of other things to see and do. By far, the best way to experience it all is by boat.
Life’s a beach
The luxurious sand beaches along Norfolk County’s Lake Erie shorelines reflect a graduallysloping, sandy lakebed with few hard obstructions to concern visiting boaters. Getting there is easy — head for Long Point and you’re halfway there. Located nearly directly across the lake from Erie, Pennsylvania, Long Point started

off as a shoreline sand dune that got completely out of hand, extending further and further into the lake as centuries of currents piled centuries of sand along its shoreline. Today, Long Point extends roughly 25 miles east-southeast from shore, creating a large protected bay behind it that is immune to the majority of Lake Erie storms. Turning into the protected shelter of Long Point Bay from the open waters of Lake Erie, you’ll want to give the tip of the point a wide berth in order to avoid the shallow sandbar that continues for some distance underwater. The beach just inside the tip is a popular sunbathing and rafting-up spot for boaters, best approached from a due-northerly course. If you choose to navigate west along the point’s marshy shore in search of birds and wildlife, you’ll want to keep an eye out for Bluff Bar — a well-known sandbar that begins near the tip of the point and hooks back in a northwesterly direction for several miles. It’s well-marked by numerous green cans that are visible for a considerable distance. Long Point Bay is locally referred to as either the Outer Bay or the Inner Bay, and roughly divided by the First Sandbar, a shallow, sandy ridge that runs between Turkey Point in the north and Pottahawk Point to the south. The North Channel, well-marked by numerous buoy pairs, is wide, deep and easy to locate, allowing safe passage for boaters headed into the Inner Bay. There is also a South Channel, which is shallower, narrower and unmarked; leave that route for the locals.

Located on the north shore at the mouth of the Lynn River, Port Dover is a thriving community of a little over 7,500 people who enjoy its charming atmosphere, lovely beach and tremendous water views. Port Dover is definitely a top-stop for foodies, particularly seafood lovers in search of pan-fried Lake Erie perch. Waterfront Trail
The Wreck of the Atlantic
At some point on the night of August 19, after stopping to pick up still more passengers in Erie, the ship was passing through dense fog when it collided with the eastbound steamer Ogdensburg, a propeller-driven package freighter which T-boned the Atlantic, slicing deeply into its hull on the port side just ahead of the engine room. It sounds unbelievable today, but after determining that his own vessel was only minimally damaged, the captain of the Ogdensburg simply reversed out of the crumpled Atlantic and sailed on. It was nearly an hour before anyone onboard considered that the Atlantic might be in trouble. No one knows the exact chain of events that followed, but the Ogdensburg did turn around and return to the collision site, arriving just in time to watch the Atlantic slip beneath the surface. Although the crew of the Ogdensburg was able to rescue several dozen survivors from the water, the majority of those onboard the Atlantic went with it to the bottom of Lake Erie. Today, the Atlantic sits upright on the lakebed off the tip of Long Point, undamaged save for the deep slice in its hull. Considered a gravesite, it is protected from souvenir hunters by the Ontario Provincial Police, who monitor the vessel with a sophisticated electronic surveillance system.

Friday the 13th is a tradition that began with a single motorcycle rally in 1981 and has since grown to attract upwards of 200,000 people when it falls in the summer. Described as the single largest motorcycle event in the world, Friday the 13th is a family celebration for motorcycles of all types. While the show-and-shine that takes over Main Street is the star attraction, the festive atmosphere and wide variety of pop-up sidewalk attractions make it a fun and endearing event for all. For years, the protected waters of Long Point Bay have been used by ships seeking shelter from Lake Erie storms. But the lakebed off the tip of the point is littered with the wrecks of vessels that didn’t quite make it to safety. One of Lake Erie’s most famous wrecks is the paddlewheel steamer Atlantic, which sank off the tip of Long Point in 1852, taking hundreds of Irish and Norwegian immigrants to their graves. No one knows the exact number of people who were aboard the Atlantic since, as was common practice back in the day, her owners didn’t bother with details like manifests, adequate lifeboats or other safety essentials. However, historical accounts agree the ship was seriously overloaded, with no room below and at least 250 passengers crammed shoulder-to-shoulder on the main deck as it sailed from Buffalo to Detroit.

Nearby Turkey Point Provincial Park is unique in Ontario in that it’s the only provincial park with an on-site golf course. A pretty, nine-hole course with dual tees to allow 18-hole rounds, Turkey Point is a fun place to play because of the abundant wildlife that constantly distracts players from making that perfect drive or putt. Turtles, playful red foxes and, of course, wild turkeys are often observed crossing fairways and occasionally stealing golf balls. If you like a glass of wine now and then, you’ll find Turkey Point is an ideal jumping-off point for exploring Ontario’s South Coast Wine Trail. Although not really walkable from the marina, Burning Kiln Winery, Inasphere Wines and Blueberry Hill Estates are all located within relatively easy cycling distance on nearby Front Road. If you’d be happier with a guide, Ride The Bine Tours offers a variety of guided visits to local wineries, craft breweries and more, with custom tours available. Some of the wineries now offer summer concerts in the vineyards with top-notch acts; check the wineries for specific dates and detailed information. Visit in mid-July and Turkey Point becomes a hub of activity as boaters use it as the base for Canada’s largest boating party, held on the shores of nearby Pottahawk Island. Officially named the Pottahawk Pissup, this annual event typically attracts in excess of 2,000 boats and more than 10,000 people, all rafted together in the shallows surrounding the island. Pottahawk is all about enjoying the summer sun with music, good food and cold beer. Boaters are generally well-behaved, and a significant police presence ensures everyone has a good time without getting silly.
A severe storm in the late 19th century washed away a narrow portion of Long Point’s thin sand spit right at the base of the peninsula, effectively turning it into an island. The resulting opening, now known as The Old Cut, was originally large enough to be navigated by ships. In due course, a lighthouse was built on the lakeside of the channel to mark its entrance. Unfortunately, the lighthouse and its promise of safe passage to protected waters in the bay was quickly recognized by local shipwreckers. In stormy weather, dozens of these individuals — known locally as Blackbirds — would erect temporary, fake lighthouses all along the southern shoreline of Long Point in the hopes of luring ships onto sandbars, where they would be wrecked and promptly looted. The Old Cut has since silted in and closed up on the lakeside of Long Point, but local boaters continue to use the northern portion of this one-time channel to access the bay from their summer cottages.

Best of the Inner Bay
Once you pass west of Turkey Point and enter the Inner Bay, the first community you’ll come to is the tiny settlement of St. Williams, with just 400 residents — many of them direct descendants of the commercial fishing families who first settled this area in the 18th century. No less than four marinas — Fin and Feather, Booth’s Harbour, Inner Bay Marina and Shady Aker’s — serve the village, where you’ll also find a small beach and pier for docking small boats. A short distance farther west is the enchanting village of Port Rowan, with a population of less than 2,000 people. A short walk from its excellent marina brings boaters to a delightful downtown with shops, restaurants and the first-rate Twins Ice Cream Parlour, where you’ll find tasty ice cream, homemade waffle cones and a white, upright piano. In season, Port Rowan is also home to a terrific farmers market featuring locally grown produce and artisan cheese, making it a great place to provision. If you should happen to visit on the first weekend in September, you’ll be right in time to enjoy Bayfest, an annual Labor Day weekend festival that has run for more than 30 years. Attractions include a midway, homemade boat races, food vendors, parades, fireworks and more. Originally known as Tomato Fest in honor of the local farm crop, the event changed its name to Bayfest in 2001 to be more inclusive and better reflect the town’s extensive maritime heritage. Regardless of when you visit, you’ll soon find that Norfolk County is a festive place at any time of year. Visitors and locals alike can enjoy a wide range of annual festivals and special events, including the South Coast Jazz Festival, Canada Day celebrations, Beerstock (celebrating craft beers), Summerfest, the Norfolk Studio Tour, and the Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show. Norfolk County Tourism office maintains a full list of upcoming celebrations on its website (NORFOLKTOURISM.CA/EVENTS). Apart from playing host to visiting boaters, Port Rowan is also a top destination for serious bird watchers, who flock to the area every year. Port Rowan marks the eastern edge of the Long Point Biosphere Reserve, designated as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and as a globally significant birding area by Bird Life International. The surrounding shorelines, marshes and woodlots are home to no less than 400 species of birds, 102 species of fish, 46 species of mammals, 34 species of amphibians and reptiles, and 91 species of butterflies. Pass through on their annual migrations, including an estimated 30,000 Tundra swans. Visit here in spring or fall and you’ll definitely want to keep those binoculars close at hand. Other nearby locations to view birds and wildlife include the Big Creek National Wildlife Area, located at the base of Long Point at the mouth of Big Creek, and Long Point Provincial Park on the point itself. The park makes a great home base from which you can explore the Long Point Birding Trail, with more than 40 public access sites. It’s also a good home base if you wish to pay a visit to the Long Point Bird Observatory. Founded in 1960, it remains among the leading bird research centers in North America. A number of marinas sit just outside the park entrance, including Marina Shores, Old Cut Marina and Sandboy Marina, putting the entire area within easy cycling distance. Forget the French Riviera, my friends, the Canadian Riviera is where it’s at. Though it may fly in the face of all those old stereotypes that paint Canada as a land of muskox and igloos, Norfolk County’s first-class marine facilities, protected waters, fine sand beaches and small village charms make this one Port of Call you’ll want to put straight at the top of your bucket list. You might even get to see a hockey game. ★

magine tossing a few logs on the impressive stone fireplace in this East Jordan home’s great room, preparing some hors d'oeuvre for guests in the fit-for-an-award-winning-chef kitchen, or running a golf cart down the gravel path to the stunning 110 feet of prime Lake Charlevoix frontage. The options here — in any of the four Michigan seasons — are endless. “There is very detailed workmanship inside the home, a lot of carved woodland details, which sets this home apart from a lot of other log homes,” says realtor Pat O’Brien. “The current homeowners took meticulous care of it and it shows." Built in 2002, the classic log home hasn’t aged a bit. The beautifully landscaped five-acre lot sets a peaceful tone — from the waterfall that trickles down the gentle slope of the property to a pond surrounded by vibrant flowers. “As soon as you open that front door, bam!, there’s the lake,” O’Brien says. “You can hear the stream from inside the house. The pond has a spectacular look and gives you a soothing feeling inside.” The main floor boasts a personal office, master suite, stunning great room — featuring a wall of windows, geometric

beams, stone fireplace, and knotty pine ceiling and walls — as well as a spacious kitchen. As soon as the current homeowners saw the kitchen, they knew this was the one for them. And it’s easy to see why. The kitchen is outfitted with refrigerated drawers, an elevated dishwater, a six-burner cooktop, double ovens and a leathered stone countertop island. Downstairs, guests who enjoy games and cold beverages will be delighted. The walkout lower level features a billiards table, living area, sleeping space, yet another stone fireplace and, best of all, a fully stocked bar, which the homeowners have dubbed the Lakeside Pub. Just above the three-stall garage is a private guest apartment, complete with two bedrooms, a kitchen, living area and plenty of privacy. All the furniture in the home, which was custom made for each room, is included in the sale. For homeowners with plenty of toys, there is a storage building located at the top of the driveway that can accommodate boats, jet skis, golf carts and more. But the star of the show is the lakefront, where you’ll find sparkling clear water, a firepit gathering space, and a dock and boat hoist so you can get out on the water in an instant. ★
Sweet Springwater
A timeless log cottage with 150’ of Lake Charlevoix frontage offers endless possibilities. The desirable Springwater Beach location is close to town and has a bike path running along the entrance and can take you downtown Boyne City at any given moment. The property has lovely landscaping from the road to the shoreline. Dine along the waters edge on the lakeside patio. A quietly flowing stream runs along the property with small wood bridges, perfect for youngsters running about. This true cottage brings back nostalgic memories of summers past. Spend the afternoon splashing in the water and create new memories for years to come. The additional 1/2 acre parcel across the road has unlimited possibilities for a guest house, or pole barn with living quarters!

CLASSIC CRAFT
Lemon Chiffon
ADD YOUR BOAT
84
In 1970, my family and I moved to Holland, Michigan. My mom and dad bought a house with two buildable lots for $29,000 on Lake Macatawa. How waterfront prices have changed! I was only 5 years old at the time, so I only remember pictures of our first boat. It was a 1965 StarCraft with an 85-hp Johnson motor on it. It was Baby Blue. We learned to ski, fish and tube behind it until we couldn’t hold onto the rope anymore. It was an amazing place to grow up. I loved to be on the water. When I was 12 years old, I wanted to buy my own boat so I decided to mow lawns in the neighborhood to earn some money. I bought my first boat the next year. It was a 14-foot aluminum boat with a 5-hp SEARS motor. I have had many boats in my life over the years but always going a little bigger. I was fortunate enough to purchase a 41 PC Formula, which I raised my three children on. We’ve made the best memories; my children still remember when we went under the Mackinaw Bridge. I have been in real estate since 1990 and when 2008 hit I needed to sell the boat; but like most of us crazy boaters, I needed something to get me back on the water. As luck would have it, I was going to look at a house to put on the market when the seller was showing me his garage and that is when Lemon Chiffon appeared. It’s was just like our old family boat, Baby Blue. I asked the seller of the house if Lemon Chiffon was for sale and the rest is history. No matter what the size of your boat, the smell of a boat and gas burning on the water is the best. My wife and I now trailer Lemon Chiffon around Michigan enjoying inland lakes. We now have twin grandbabies and the plan is to enjoy Lemon Chiffon and to purchase a boat we can sleep on and take boat trips up north again. Email kbush@lakelandboating.com if you have a Classic Craft with a good story to share! —Paul and Paula Brooks, Grand Haven, MI
