What effects have you seen from the Great Lakes’ extremely high water levels?

or those of us who live on the edge of the Great Lakes, it was a bit of a shock this summer as the water began to rise — and rise, and rise and continue to rise. On a boat ride in July, I witnessed seawalls and fuel docks under water in West Michigan, as well as floating logs and debris serving as potential hazards for unaware boaters. A cruise along Lake Michigan’s shoreline revealed eroded dunes and barely-there beaches. In fact, four of the five Great Lakes hit record highs in June, prompting many to wonder “What’s going on?” Contributor Craig Ritchie speaks with local officials, trade associations and more to see how the high waters are impacting the communities that border the Great Lakes (p. 42). A sure way to brighten your day is by taking a ride on one of the candy-colored, Jet Age boats at Saugatuck, Michigan’s Retro Boat Rentals (p. 22). This fun attraction on the Kalamazoo River let’s boaters explore the Saugatuck waterfront as they putter around in style. We live in the Upper Peninsula and our broad, sandy Lake Michigan beach is about a third the width it was the last few years. Mackinaw Trail Winery in Manistique suspended its yoga on the dock due to the high water. HHH

Renovations Begin At Dossin Great Lakes Museum From July to November 2019, Detroit’s Dossin Great Lakes Museum will begin phase one of a four-phase, $4.9 million outdoor enhancement project. Located riverside on Belle Isle, the museum is a destination for maritime enthusiasts, history buffs and nature lovers. Phase one of the project will include $1.5 million in landscape improvements, as well as upgrading the outdoor maritime artifact displays. A new Lost Mariners’ Memorial to highlight those lost at sea, as well as a kayak launch, an observation telescope, a riverfront event patio and an ungraded central lawn area will also be part of phase one. Travelopia Invests $130 Million in Its Charter Operations

Following Hurricane Irma in 2017, Travelopia — the parent company to The Moorings and Sunsail — has made an ongoing investment of more than $130 million into its charter businesses. The investment includes new fleet additions, including new monohulls by Jeanneau and Beneteau, and new sailing and power catamarans built by Robertson & Caine. It also includes significant base infrastructure, such as updates to docks, on-site hotels and restaurants. Travelopia is also investing several million in the company’s technology, making it easier to research, find and book a charter.

BoatUS has added a “Request a Tow” feature to its free mobile app. If a boat breaks down, runs aground or runs out of fuel, this new button on the app can be pressed to show the closest TowBoatUS captain. After answering a few questions (vessel type, the number of passengers aboard, anchoring status, the nature of the boat’s disablement and the preferred destination), the boater will get two texts: One confirming the request and another with the time it will take the local TowBoatUS captain to reach the spot. The boaters will then get a call or text from the local TowBoatUS captain advising when they are underway. THE STAIN Dirt, grime, gunk, muck. Fish blood, food, drinks. These are your surface stains. THE SCIENCE Most surface dirt will wash right oﬀ with boat soap and water. However, some gets ground in, especially on non-skid surfaces. That’s where surfactants come in. Surfactant molecules fully surround the dirt molecules and lift them from the surface that you’re cleaning. This allows them to be washed away with water. Chelating Agents are supercharged surfactants for specialized cleaning. THE SOLUTION Star brite Boat Wash will deﬁnitely remove most surface dirt. For tough grime and gunk, use a cleaner/ degreaser, such as Star brite Xtreme Clean or choose a surfactant based on the surface: Non-Skid Deck Cleaner for nonskid, Vinyl Cleaner for vinyl, etc…

THE STAIN Tree leaves, hull stains, rust stains, waterline stains, hard water stains, orange stains. THE SCIENCE Tannins are naturally produced in the decomposition of plant-based matter, and their signature orange-hued stains are dying your hull and fiberglass. Rust stains occur on the fiberglass around metal, where water leaches color from underneath the metal and deposits it on the surface. Removing these stains requires a chemical reaction with an acid. THE SOLUTION Star brite Instant Hull Cleaner contains a modified oxalic acid that safely neutralizes tannins and rust. There’s much more science behind it but trust us on this one, simply spray or wipe on and watch the stain disappear.

THE STAIN Black, brown, green, and even pink mold and mildew stains. THE SCIENCE Similar to grass stains, these stains are caused by organic material, and need something stronger than a surfactant alone to remove them. The oxygen in a bleaching agent attacks and breaks up these types of stains, and removes any discoloration. THE SOLUTION While most people believe that regular chlorine bleach is the answer, it also causes a lot of problems, such as breaking down fabrics and stitching and destroying gelcoats. THE STAIN Black shoe marks, rub rail and bumper scuffs, marks left from dragging hoses and equipment. THE SCIENCE Scuff marks—or “transfer stains”—happen when material is transferred onto a surface and is mechanically bonded. Chemicals are rarely strong enough to remove these marks, since many times the material that has transferred is chemical-resistant (think of a rubber shoe). Retro Boat Rentals Retro boats take us back to the Jet Age in historic Saugatuck, Michigan. t started with a building. “When we moved here four years ago, we saw this old place and wanted to save it,” says Lauren Stanton-Sharar, a former morning news anchor at WZZM News where she was on the air for 18 years. Lauren is explaining why she and her husband, John Sharar, bought the twostory building in Saugatuck, Michigan, that sits on the Kalamazoo River at the bend where Water Street turns into Lucy Street. Once used by the State of Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources for studies on invasive species, the wood building — now appropriately called The Old Boat House — had stood empty for a decade. “After we bought it, we needed to figure out what to do with it,” John says, who, until the retro boat craze hit him hard, was a national sales manager at an industrial distribution company. Once the couple owned the building, they needed boats. And not just any old boats. The two wanted a great on-the-water, one-of-a-kind way for people to view Saugatuck’s spectacular waterfront in style. And what could be more stylish than Jet Age classic runabouts — the perfect throwback to the cool cars of the 1950s with their automotive details? The result was Retro Boat Rentals, a collection of 12- to 14-foot Jet Agers (they were also known as atomic boats back then) that come in a variety of jellybean colors, including robin’s egg blue, fire engine red, aquamarine and pink. Some sprout tailfins (think your grandmother’s 1957 Capri Sedan — the one she drove wearing white gloves and pearls on her way to play bridge), while others have lustrous flat tops, cool auto-style headlamps, chrome details and quarter cabins. Their sleek open seating areas incorporate the colors of the boat’s exterior with bands of white.

The boats simply move forward and back so there’s no tricky maneuvering. They putt along at 4 mph, which is a fine speed as it both complies with the no-wake zone requirements and allows boaters enough time to cruise the entire Saugatuck riverfront from cove to cove, which can be accomplished in a 90-minute rental. Three-hour trips are available as well. “Anyone can drive them,” Lauren says, “and that was our plan.” To name all the boats in the fleet, the couple looked to the ’50s for inspiration. “We literally went through lists of the most popular women’s names of that era,” Lauren says. Here are a few examples of what they came up with: Gidget is a pink Glastron; Dottie, a Dorsett Catalina; Ruby, a Bell Boy Banshee; and June is a turquoise 1960 Crownline. Oh, and by the way, Glastron is the only manufacturer still in business today — another aspect that makes these boats exceptional. Boat quest Early on, John thought about using wooden boats in their quest to give an authentic and special water experience; however, that wasn’t practical because of the boats’ laborious upkeep. Then they discovered the early fiberglass marvels. “I didn’t know about these kinds of boats before,” he says, noting their criteria for selecting a boat follows certain parameters. “They have to have been manufactured between 1955 to 1963 because that’s the era when these boats were most unique. That was the real Jet Age of boats when they had such characteristics as fins, taillights and headlights.” Often the manufacturers were small, their designers a combination of artists, boating and auto enthusiasts, and mechanical engineers. As boat makers consolidated, many of these manufacturers went out of business. “High production, fewer styles,” John says, summarizing what happened. Talking to John about their boats is to get a history lesson in what some refer to as the “Golden Age of Boats.” “The Dorsett Catalina was designed by Raymond Loewy,” he says about the French-born industrial designer who designed not only boats but also the U.S. Mail and TWA icons; packaging for Lucky Strike; Studebaker’s Avanti and Champion (talk about cool cars) models; Coco-Cola machines; the paint scheme for Air Force 1; as well as several planes and railroad engines. The Retro Boat Rental’s boats come from a variety of places: Hidden away in old barns, on Craigslist and eBay, and through other vintage boat enthusiasts. Once the boats arrive, besides doing any necessary repairs, John converts their old gas motors to cheaper, more environmentally friendly electric motors.

“That way they’re quieter, easier to use and more reliable,” Lauren says. “Our customers can just hop aboard. They feel comfortable driving them even if they’ve never been on a boat before.” After the successful test run of their first retro boat in February 2017 on the mostly frozen Kalamazoo River, they were ready to go. The first year went so well that the couple quit their day jobs. Now they not only run the Saugatuck location, they also lease the boats to operators in South Haven, Milwaukee and Chicago. The Old Boat House The Old Boat House building has been totally remodeled and now has a bar, kitchen, eating area, gleaming hardwood floors and large, open indoor space that can be rented for corporate events and get-togethers. The wall art is nautical, such as old boat engines and vintage advertisements for the boats available for rent. A retro boat is perched in the open loft above the main floor bar. Lauren says that people often rent several boats or even the entire fleet to take out together and stop here afterward for food and a drink. Food options include a variety of different SausageTucks, their signature dish of locally smoked sausages tucked inside an artisan bun. Varieties include German-style with sauerkraut and Dijon

mustard; Mexican with queso cheese, jalapeno slices, cilantro and diced tomatoes; and Californian with avocado, jalapeno slices, cilantro and diced tomatoes. Other edibles include smoked whitefish dip, a selection of charcuterie options and sandwiches. Eat indoors or sit underneath one of the red-striped umbrellas on the large outdoor deck overlooking the river. Want to arrive at the uber-popular Red Dock Café, Saugatuck’s answer to Key West, in a manner Hemingway would admire? Call ahead and reserve one of the docks the couple owns there, but be sure to rent one of Retro Boat Rental’s red boats to keep with the theme. What you need to know Retro Boats Rentals are $115 for 90 minutes and $230 for three hours for two people. Additional passengers are $10 each; kids 16 and under ride free. You can also rent one of two Donut Boats named Sprinkles and Glazed. No, you don’t eat them; instead, these bright orange electric vessels (think life rings on steroids) topped with matching umbrellas, a table and a circle of seats are available to rent as well. No outside beverages, food or coolers are allowed on any of the boats. Alcohol must be purchased at The Old Boat House. Retro Boat Rentals will provide coolers and ice, and offer a wide variety of beverages, including bottles of wine, domestic and craft beers, non-alcoholic drinks, mixed drinks in cans and even champagne. Snacks are also available. Walk-ins are welcome; in fact, Lauren says that many people discover the business just by walking by. But your best bet is to call ahead and make a reservation. And for those with a canine crewmember, Jane, a 1958 Geneva, is the only boat that’s currently dog-friendly. Sanitation Shut-Down

roper maintenance of your sanitation system is crucial in the never-ending battle to keep things flowing smoothly, but no more so than properly decommissioning it at the end of your cruising season. Here’s the scoop on prepping your sanitation system for that long winter’s nap.

Remember to flush Compared to their terrestrial brethren, marine toilets use very little water when flushing — one reason clogs are such a common problem. Always flush enough to move the waste out of the bowl and up past the high point of the hose (typically a vented loop) so that it flows “downhill” into the holding tank and not the bowl. This not only dilutes the waste but also makes pumping the holding tank easier. How much extra flushing do you need? Two strokes per every foot of discharge hose is a common rule of thumb. If you’re worried about filling the holding tank too soon while on the water, clear the hose once at the end of the day or before leaving the boat.

Types of sanitation systems Before we delve into the details of decommissioning, let’s briefly discuss the four basic types of sanitation systems found aboard most midsize and larger vessels, along with major system components you’ll want to be aware of. 1. Manual pump toilets utilize an integral hand pump to bring flush water into the bowl, where it mixes with sewage and then pumped clear. If the system utilizes an electric pump instead of a manual one, your system would also include additional parts, such as wiring to the pump, circuit protection, etc. If plumbed to draw flush water from your freshwater system, the installation will include a tie into that system, a holding tank, pump-out options (such as a deck fitting), as well as the various hoses and fittings needed to connect it all together. Systems utilizing “raw water” for flushing (i.e. the water your boat is floating in) will additionally have a below-thewaterline through-hull fitting, seacock and plumbing from the seacock to the toilet flush water intake. 2. Macerating toilets are designed to puree solid waste, much like a garbage disposal. This is typically accomplished by an electric-powered “grinder” (aka macerator) that uses blades to simultaneously chop and pump waste clear of the bowl. Jet action heads accomplish the same thing but use pressurized water jets to macerate waste. Flush water for both is commonly drawn from the vessel’s freshwater system. 3. Vacuum toilets use an electric or manual pump to generate a vacuum in the system, which pulls sewage from the bowl to a holding tank when the toilet is flushed. In most cases, vacuum systems will be plumbed to the freshwater system. 4. Composting toilets utilize peat-moss to turn waste into compost. As they’re completely self-contained, they don’t have the plumbing found in traditional systems; however, they do require installation of a fan and vent pipe. Decommissioning checklist While the type of sanitation system installed will dictate specific decommissioning requirements, here’s a list of steps to consider when making your own decommissioning list. • Flush the head sufficiently to push sewage from the hoses, then drain it completely or do a final flush with an appropriate, environmentally friendly antifreeze. • Shock your holding tank and flush the system prior to storage. Shock treatments (such as the Head-O-Matic Shock

Treatment) both de-scale the system and help prevent odor buildup. Add shock treatment a week or so before pumping out for long-term storage (while still using the boat). This gives the treatment time to slosh about in the holding tank to help de-scale the tank and ensure a clean, final pump out. • Flush a treatment of pump lubricating oil through the toilet. This not only lubricates the pump wall for easier pumping, but also helps keep the internal rubber parts oiled and supple. The best choice for this is a lubricant specifically designed for use in marine toilets. If possible, disconnect the head intake hose and pour the oil into this hose. Pumping will then lubricate both the intake and discharge chambers of the pump (pouring it into the bowl only lubricates the pump discharge chamber). • Pump out your holding tank, rinse with freshwater, then do a final pump out. • Inspect all sanitation system hoses for deterioration, corroded or missing hose clamps, etc. Start at one end of your sanitation system and check each hose joint for leaks, ensuring all hose clamps are tight and corrosion-free. • Sewage can permeate older sanitation system hoses, causing odor issues. If a hose needs replacing, use only a proper, marine-grade sanitation hose. It’s expensive but imperative from a head odor control standpoint. • Inspect all sanitation system seacocks, ensuring all are operating properly. Keep an eye out for anything unusual, such as leaks, broken hose clamps, deteriorated (or insufficiently sized) backing plates, damaged or missing components (handles, for example) and corrosion. • If your boat will be stored in the water, shut all sanitation system seacocks to prevent possible back siphoning and flooding. • Replace or blow out your vent hose. Mud-daubers and other such insects love to build nests in them. If the tank is filled to overflowing, bits of sewage can also clog the vent line. A clogged vent hose can not only promote smells but also damage your system due to the build-up of pressure each time the head is flushed. A clogged vent also creates negative pressure when pumping out, which can cause damage and possible collapse of the holding tank. • Inspect flush-type toilets for leaks and component failure. The soft parts of your toilet (gaskets, seals, valves, impellers) will eventually dry out and become brittle, which leads to cracks and leaks. By replacing these parts on your own terms before they have a chance to fail, you’ve eliminated one of a boat owner’s key nightmares: Toilet failure. • Clean the exterior of your toilet, as well as the entire head (sinks, countertops and the areas around and behind the toilet). A good cleaning with disinfecting wipes or other such cleaners will leave Neptune’s throne room sparkling and ready for spring. ★

One Love Small watercraft like PWCs and inflatables provide easy entry into the boating community — and to life on the water. ot long ago, I interviewed a Great Lakes yacht dealer who specializes in several luxury brands. This dealer noted that the price tags attached to new boats and yachts can be perceived as a barrier for many people who would otherwise love to spend time on the water — which is unfortunate because the boating lifestyle isn’t really about traditional boats at all. It’s about the water itself. It’s really that simple. If you want to be part of the boating community, all you need to do is jump on a stand-up paddleboard, climb into a kayak, or consider checking out the latest inflatables. You might even want to try a personal watercraft. Small watercraft often prove to be the key to gaining entry to this lifestyle we all love. And, even if you’re a more experienced boater, you just might find that they’ll enhance your own experiences out there. Good things come in small packages Personal watercraft, or PWCs, are proving to be a popular draw for first-time buyers. According to BRP Sea-Doo’s Tim McKercher, nearly half of their customers fall into that category, although they might not be entirely new to the water. “The majority of our first-timers have had some experience on the water, perhaps in childhood with their families,” he says. “They were exposed to the lifestyle at some point and it planted a seed. They approach us because they see a PWC as less intimidating.” What seals the deal is the accessibility of small watercraft like a PWC. Not only are you looking at lower costs for operation and maintenance, but you also might not have storage costs at all. A Sea-Doo can fit in the equivalent of a single-car garage. The price point is also lower than that of a traditional boat. The Sea-Doo Spark, for example, starts at just $5,399. “We introduced it five years ago,” McKercher says. “It’s

smaller, lighter, less expensive and crazy fun. We discovered it really appeals to millennials because it’s an easy way to get out on the water. It’s affordable, it’s reliable and you can tow it with smaller cars.” You definitely won’t need an F-250. And you’ll find that a PWC requires less time to launch and haul out, with maybe 10 minutes required to clean up afterward. That’s critical because, for most of us, time is at a premium. “If you only have six hours on a Sunday, you want to make the most memories you can,” McKercher says. Inflatable boats prove to be attractive for many of the same reasons. Although Z Nautic Group sees fewer first-time buyers (20% in the U.S. market) for its Zodiac inflatables and rigid-hull inflatable boats (RIBs), those buyers are drawn to the boats’ ease of use and the hassle-free experience they provide. “Our RIBs are more forgiving to user error over that of a traditional fiberglass vessel,” says Z Nautic North America’s William Herron. “They consume less fuel than a traditional vessel of similar capacity, and they don’t require the same horsepower. It isn’t uncommon to see a RIB with 25% less horsepower achieve the same performance.” Like PWCs, the boats weigh less than their traditional counterparts, which means you won’t need a large SUV or truck for towing. They’re low-maintenance; they offer a smooth, fast, dry ride; and they’re incredibly seaworthy due to the tubes’ enormous buoyancy. They’re versatile as well. A Zodiac is easy to beach, provides a comfortable platform for on-water recreation due to its stability, and can carry up to 50% more people than a traditional boat of the same size. “You can bring more people along to enjoy the day,” Herron observes. “And, performance is key. Most RIBs will outperform a similar-in-size traditional hull.” Then there is the docking issue; it becomes significantly less stressful when you’re essentially driving a big fender. “Once driven, most consumers are immediate fans,” Herron says. “This is a very different boating experience.” Expectations versus experience The same is true for Sea-Doo, according to McKercher. He says the reaction among first-time PWC operators is overwhelmingly positive. “I do a lot of consumer test-ride events, and the operators range from newbies to the more experienced,” he says. “A lot of them tell me they rented PWCs a long time ago on vacation and they can’t believe how different the newer models are. They’re amazed at the level of control they have and at the overall comfort and stability. Personal watercraft have come so far.”

Current Sea-Doo models have an Intelligent Brake and Reverse (IBR) system, which allows you to start in neutral instead of forward. The controls are on the handlebars so, essentially, you never have to look down. With these features, docking, launching and loading become easier than ever before. “Let’s face it, those are the biggest fears in all of boating,” McKercher says. “Now, even if you don’t have a lot of skill, it’ll feel like you’ve been doing it for years.” Watersports enthusiasts might also be surprised to learn that the new Sea-Doo models boast amenities such as waterproof, integrated Bluetooth sound systems and the innovative new LinQ System, which is a quick-attach system for accessories. “It’s like apps on a smartphone,” McKercher explains. “You can swap out the accessories quickly and easily; it’s plug-and-play in a matter of seconds.” You’re essentially customizing your PWC to meet your unique on-water needs. This might include a cooler, a fuel caddy for an extended ride and a storage bag for camping. “Comfort, handling and horsepower are all important, but it’s also important to figure out how we can make this experience even better for people,” McKercher says. “How can we maximize fun?” To that end, with the LinQ System, you can even get a 13.5-gallon cooler with rod holders, tackle tray and work surface for fishing. Yes, fishing. And it’s not just about the accessories; Sea-Doo introduced the Fish Pro, its first fishing PWC, this year. Unsurprisingly, it’s drawing anglers into the PWC fold. It also is attracting demographics the company wasn’t expecting. “Not only are we getting millennials, we’re also getting people who have never looked at PWCs before,” he says. “We’re getting paddlers, which makes this a real crossover model.” What’s so appealing to kayakers and SUPers? According to McKercher, they like the hassle-free experience. “You can go out before or after work because it’s easy

to launch and load alone,” he says. “You can go fishing with live bait and a full tank of gas for about $75. And instead of taking 30 minutes to do a quick-clean of your boat afterward, you’re taking less than 10 minutes to do it thoroughly. Really, you’re spending the time doing the things you want to do, not what you have to do.” This 55 mph fishing machine is particularly appealing in larger urban markets where storage space is at a premium. Expanding the fleet Then there are the more experienced repeat buyers. Eighty percent of Zodiac customers and roughly 50% of Sea-Doo customers fall into that category, and many of them are adding to their existing fleets of watercraft. “This is especially true of those who live on the water,” McKercher says. “Their larger boat becomes the island, the base camp for the toys. Or, they use the toys to get out on the water quickly if they have limited time that day.” In the case of Zodiac, while the majority of RIBs more than 5 meters in length are being used as the owner’s primary vessel, 80% of Zodiac’s boats are intended for tender use. And those yacht owners will still use them for on-water recreation, using their primary vessel as the home base. Of course, newbies frequently become repeat buyers themselves as they become more experienced. “Often, before their first summer is over, they realize personal watercraft are anything but personal,” McKercher says with a laugh. “They come back to add two or more units, and they can do it easily because a trailer for multiples is still smaller than the average boat trailer.” In the end, it all comes back to the desire to be on the water. No matter how we do it, whether it’s with a Sea-Doo Fish Pro, a Zodiac RIB, a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard, we become part of that larger boating community — that family with one love in common. “Getting on the water is what’s important,” McKercher emphasizes. “It’s always better than being on land.” ★

Although today’s marine electronics are built to withstand the rigors of the marine environment, it’s still wise to prepare them for the long, cold winter months. By doing so, you can rest easy knowing they will serve you well seasons to come.

Backup data A good start to winding down the season is to back up all the data on your chartplotter and fishfinder. This is a simple procedure on most of today’s systems, requiring a simple backup to a small memory card inserted into one of the display’s card slots. Many modern units utilize common memory cards, such as those in the SD and Micro SD format. Check your owner’s manual or call the manufacturer to determine which format is required. Blank cards can be purchased at any office supply store, at many big-box retailers and online. When it comes to the memory capacity of these cards, it’s important to remember that bigger isn’t necessarily better. In fact, many multifunction displays are not able to handle cards greater than 32 or 64 gigabytes, so don’t spend more money on higher capacity cards. The highest memory capacity you’d need is 32 GB, which is more than enough to back up and store all your waypoints, tracks and data. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions for the backup process. Details can be found in the unit’s manual and online.

Store cards Once the data is backed up, place the labeled card somewhere safe and dry in a place where you will remember. Make sure it’s stored in a place where it won’t be found by others and then placed in a camera only to be overwritten by holiday photos (trust me on this one — been there, done that). In the same vein, if you have chart cards in your plotter be sure to remove and store them safely until next year. Keep them in a suitable container and away from magnets of any kind. Check to see what the update policy is on your chart cards and how long you have to update them without incurring a fee. You may find that the timeframe will run out during the winter season; if that is the case, get your update or upgrade before time runs out. It may be a good idea to invest in a small waterproof box to place your backup cards and chart cards in to keep them all together, safe from loss or damage. Boxes from manufacturers like Pelican, Plano, Otter Box or even memory card-specific storage boxes can be purchased inexpensively online. Remove electronics If possible, removing electronics from the boat is also a good idea before the offseason. Giving the screen a good clean and keeping the sun/dust cover in place will help protect the display. Storing the electronics in a padded case, such as a Pelican, Gator or similar case, along with other electronics will keep them safe and dry until next year. If you can’t remove them because they are flush-mounted, be sure the screen is clean and clear of debris and place any sun/dust cover they may have over them. If additional console or helm covers are available, place those over them too. It’s important to remember that rodents may be looking for a warm place to stay for the winter. As a result, more damage is caused by vermin chewing through wires than by any other winter foe. Make sure the boat — especially the compartments with exposed wiring — is sealed and inaccessible for rodents. A well-shrink-wrapped boat can help with this and can pay for itself by avoiding damage to wiring aboard. Anything onboard that has batteries, such as hand-held VHFs, GPS units, flashlights, trackers, SPOT devices and more, all need to have their batteries removed for storage. If the battery is rechargeable remember to fully charge it before storage and keep it stored out of the cold weather. The vessel’s batteries are the lifeblood of any electronics system and they too need to be topped up and fully charged prior to storing them for the season. With a little prep work, your electronics should be ready to serve you next season, safe from the rigors of a winter season that can feel like an eternity. ★

Flare Facts How and when to use a marine flare.

hen boaters face an emergency situation, pyrotechnic and electronic flares provide a quick and visual way to summon help. Boaters in U.S. coastal and ocean waters, Great Lakes, territorial seas and all connected waterways up to two miles wide must have U.S. Coast Guard (USCG)-approved signaling devices, including three unexpired flares, though experts suggest doubling that amount. Marine flares appear in two categories: USCG-approved flares and Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) flares meeting minimum international requirements not certified in the U.S. Inland boating requires handheld red flares and/or aerial flares, and orange smoke flares for far offshore excursions. Boaters traveling in ocean waters, such as those traveling the Great Loop, should also carry SOLAS-approved handheld flares, smoke flares and aerial flares. The only boats that are exempt from carrying flares are boats less than 16 feet operating in daylight; boats participating in organized events like regattas or parades; open sailboats less than 26 feet without motors; and manually propelled boats. Handheld flares produce flames or smoke through chemical combinations. Burning times and distance seen varies by flare type. Orange smoke flares are for daylight use, while red and white flares are primarily used at night. Flare guns and flare tubes launching aerial flares emit a red or white smoke trail, or they can launch a parachute and a red smoke trail. Flare guns in some states are considered illegal firearms. USCG-approved flares are stamped with an expiration date and certification number. They expire in 42 months and by law must be replaced or boat owners will suffer a penalty of $1,100. Additionally, igniting a red flare without an emergency is illegal. Orion handhelds (cardboard tubes with an ignition button to strike under the plastic cap) were the only marine USCG-approved flares for 50 years. Then Crewsaver’s Aurora became an approved (steel tube) red flare, with a cord that’s easily pulled upward for flare activation or downward for orange smoke. Now, electronic battery flares, like Weems & Plath SOS Distress Light Electronic Flare, provide a third option. Some electronic flares float, don’t need to be stored in a cool, waterproof container, broadcast a strong, long-lasting light and a flashing SOS may be available. Best of all, they don’t expire. There is an initial cost, they use batteries and the boater must also include a daytime orange flag and whistle for compliance. Precautions 1. Many emergencies occur at night so learn about flares in the daytime. 2. Read the package for directions, usage and burning time. 3. Inspect your flares yearly. Newest flares should be used

first. Mark and keep expired ones together. Store all of them in a water-tight container with fireproof gloves, away from heat and accessibility. Always remove flares from long-term stored boats. “If I am ever sinking in my boat, I want a giant bucket of flares to use rather than just three,” says BMC J.J. Kinstrey, officer in charge at Coast Guard Station Valdez, Alaska. “You’re allowed to keep old flares as long as you have the required number of good ones to pass inspection or during a Coast Guard boarding. I have never seen a flare that failed to fire and I’ve shot off some pretty old flares.” 4. Never use bent or broken flares or put flares in the trash. 5. Store flare guns unloaded. Usage tips Pyrotechnic flares are dangerous even for the experienced boater, but it’s more stressful not knowing how to use one in an emergency. 1. Hold red flares at a 45-degree angle outward so the slag does not drip on your hand, on combustible materials, or onto the boat. These flares burn at temperatures that instantly boil water. Do not breathe the smoke. “There is really no way to put it out until it burns out,” Kinstrey comments. “If dropped in a plastic bucket of water on a boat, it will just burn through the bucket and your boat.” Once you are assured of rescue, flares should be dropped in the water. 2. Shoot aerial flares after identifying possible rescue vessels. Aim leeward for the greatest visual attention and prepare to use other flares. 3. Aerial flares are launched by an explosive charge considered as ammunition and disposal is challenging. In a “hang-fire,” wait 30 seconds before ejecting the cartridge. What do you do with expired flares? There’s no easy answer. Maine designed the first state law requiring expired flare disposal; however, implementation details are lacking. The state’s criteria may influence other state laws. Do not assume that local fire departments or USCG stations will accept expired flares. Instead, contact the Coast Guard Auxiliary (CGAUX.ORG) or U.S. Power Squadrons (USPS.ORG) for a flare safety workshop or firing practice and bring your expired flares. Besides proper demonstration and practice, they will notify the local police, fire department and Coast Guard station. Since they are distress signals, during the event the Coast Guard will send out a radio alert that there is no emergency. ★

here are iconic brands in every industry. Some are known for style, some for quality, while others are best known for innovation. Viking Yachts, built in the southern New Jersey town of New Gretna since 1964, is well-known as an industry leader in all three categories. Ask any Viking owner what sets the brand apart and the answer will likely be “quality.” For more than 50 years, Viking Yachts has worked to build the best sportfishing boats on the water. However, instead of relying on its reputation alone for continued success, Viking also created new and innovative models regularly to maintain their position out in front of the fleet. STOP AND STARE

When I arrived at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club on Michigan’s east coast to test drive the new 44SC, which had just been delivered to Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales (the oldest Viking dealer worldwide), I already had an idea of what I’d find. As a South Jersey native, I was well aware of the Viking Yachts name and reputation. In fact, many of my friends worked at the Viking plant at some point, and the boats were a common sight on my home “turf” of Barnegat Bay and the Jersey Shore.

However, the 2019 Viking 44SC made me stop and stare. While many other manufacturers have gone with coupe designs in the 40- to 50-foot space, Viking stayed true to its roots and created a fast, sporty, versatile and beautiful boat that still puts fishing first. The result is 44 feet of traditional sportfishing lines matched with a clean, crisp appearance that would look equally appropriate filled with a no-nonsense fishing crew or a group of friends dressed for dinner and an evening cruise. With its semi-customizable approach to options and features, Viking provides a partially painted canvas, which the buyer can complete to match their unique tastes and needs. From stainless steel towers to electronics and other components, many of the 44SC’s features can be customized. With that in mind, I was not surprised to find the vessel waiting for me was slightly stripped down to allow a new owner to build it out. However, “stripped-down” is a relative term and the boat was more than ready to go as it stood. Stepping aboard, the first word that came to mind is “clean.” The 44SC appears simply appointed at first, with little clutter aside from even the most basic fittings. The swim platform is primarily made for boarding and not entertaining, which means sportfishing functions are again maintained and there is room for fighting fish. A built-in baitwell and fishboxes blend in beautifully when the boat is not “at work.” Built-in tackle storage is hidden behind a door on

the port side. The cockpit provides plenty of space for guests, a custom dining table, or for a fighting chair when those guests need to tackle big fish.

STAYING WITH TRADITION

At the command deck, Viking’s centerline mounted helm gives the captain maximum visibility and control. Two additional captain’s chairs can swivel aft to join in on the conversation with passengers seated on the comfortable L-shaped bench along the back of the command deck. The helm itself is beautifully designed, with the simple, uncluttered feel that is repeated throughout the boat. Even the Garmin touchscreen electronics seem to disappear into the dash when powered off, and any other switches, breakers, or controls are hidden behind access panels. The helm provides impressive visibility, and single-lever ZF electronic controls with bow thruster buttons in the handles make maneuvering easy. The sleek levers and ship’s wheel are mounted in a beautiful teak pod, adding a subtle but stunning accent to the dash. At the helm, Viking’s traditional sportfishing roots are visible again. Instead of jumping on the joystick bandwagon, Viking stayed with traditional, two-lever controls that add to the clean appearance and simplify the helm. Viking also maintains traditional driveshaft designs instead of installing pods. Their reason is simple — reliability and performance. Although pod systems provide new boaters with some control advantages,

easily banish spilled spirits or remnants from a bluewater battle. Surfaces are made for above-average wear-and-tear, and there are minimal obstructions to slow a good scrubbing.

Simple things make the Viking’s big water focus stand out wherever you look. Flat-panel TVs are mounted to the wall, but there is no obvious bracket to flap around while underway. Instead, the TVs sit in boxes, which keep them from banging around while pushing through heavy seas. The 44SC is also built for comfort. Below, an L-shaped seating area with a dining table on the port side of the salon gives guests a place to enjoy the day’s catch after it’s been prepared on the spacious starboard galley’s countertops. Four cold storage drawers below the counter give the chef plenty of space to stash leftover filets. Forward, the main cabin with queen-size bed provides lots of storage. The space is bright and well-lit, as is the attached head with separate shower. The head is also accessible to guests while still providing privacy to the main cabin. Aft of the galley, guest quarters are accessible through a private entrance. Although smaller in size than some vessels in the 44-foot space, the VIP stateroom is comfortable with room to stand. It also has its own zoned HVAC and audio controls. From end to end, the 44SC appears to be a dream to clean and maintain. An afternoon with a boat brush and bucket of water can

Underway, the Viking 44SC showed us what the S (for Sport) stands for. Throttle up and the twin MAN 800-hp diesels come to life, prepared to take on any conditions. The transition from idle to cruise is smooth, even when the turbos kick in and lead the charge. The engines are quiet with little noise evident on the command deck or below while cruising at a respectable 30 knots. Push the handles forward and the Viking 44SC will reward you with 35-plus knots at wide-open throttle. The Great Lakes provide unique challenges to boaters, with unpredictable weather and a shorter, sharper chop than ocean-going captains are used to. Conditions for our test ride were pretty fair, but the boat just feels solid and safe. I never heard a single rattle, tick or slam. Even in running across a fairly calm Lake St. Clair, I kept thinking while underway, “This is the boat I want under me in 6-foot seas.” Viking’s semi-customizable approach to production allows buyers to build a vessel that perfectly fits their needs and desires. And with nearly every aspect of the production process controlled by the company in-house, Viking’s legendary status as an industry leader will guarantee impeccable fit, finish and function. nown for its world-class motoryachts, Marlow Yachts has also ventured into the smaller boat market. Introduced in 2005, the Marlow Prowler series of yachts fills the 37-foot needs of buyers with several offerings. Among the line is the 375 Open, Express Cruiser, Classic and, featured here, the Havana. Utilizing the same quality building process, fine woods, materials and overall Marlow craftsmanship, there is no skimping on the smaller brethren. The Prowler line is built with a purpose: To follow in the footsteps of foregone rum runners. That means fast boats that can handle skinny water with the best seakeeping ability. Equating that to today, it means fast center consoles and cruising yachts that are also suitable for fishing. Marlow went one step further with the Havana and added fine accommodations in the lower cabin that includes a galley and private head, as well as an enhanced helm station and copious amounts of room on deck for cruising or fishing. From a profile viewpoint, the Havana is a beefy lake- or ocean-going machine. Generous bow flare and lifting strakes keep the sea at bay while the sharp entry and modified V-hull allow for maintained speed even into a head sea. The sheerline is evident of a Downeast style, with high freeboard forward sweeping lower aft. Gold trim lines and bootstripe accentuate the flag blue hull. With a slight bow rise when getting up to speed, forward visibility remains good thanks to the high helm seats.

The needs

Make no mistake, Marlow was thinking of speed when designing this Havana, as it has triple 300-hp Yamaha outboards bolted to the transom. Yup, that’s 900 hp total! Performing our sea trial in the relatively flat waters of the Manatee River near the Marlow facility in Palmetto, Florida, it’s easy to see that getting to the fish (or rum, as it goes) fast and back can make all the difference. Cruising at 21.5 knots (3500 RPM) yields a burn of 25 gph and a range of 255 nm (25% fuel reserve). If on the chase or being chased, the 375 Havana opens up wide to 39.7 knots (6100 RPM) and a 153 nm range. Either way, there’s a good cut of speed and range when needed. Command of the Havana is at the oversized helm station. There’s a lot going on here, including twin 16-inch Garmin multifunction displays also connected to a Garmin xHD2 4-foot open array radar, two ICOM VHF radios, Garmin AIS, FLIR thermal camera, battery and tank analogue gauges, Lenco trim tab controller, Yamaha engine monitor, fore- and aft-facing hardtop-mounted spotlights, bank of rocker switches and more. Complementing the console are twin pedestal-mounted Stidd helm seats, drop-down footrests and, for those vertically challenged, a standing platform that rises from the deck, offering improved forward visibility. The hinged floor panel at the console reveals the Seakeeper SK3 stabilization gyro and 5kw Northern Lights diesel generator, which also has a 40-gallon diesel tank. It’s not uncommon to find a diesel generator on a gas boat powered by outboards; it’s a safety thing. There’s evidence all around that Marlow has carefully yet

creatively carried the virtues of the big yachts to the smaller platforms. A large, fiberglass hardtop and a three-sided fiberglass window frame are integrated into the house structure, supported by a tubular frame that is bolted to the structure in multiple spots, creating a solid enclosure. The forward windshield is a single-pane tempered glass with an overhead wiper. Frame supports run laterally across the underside of the hardtop, providing hand-holds all around. Add in Bimini curtains on the side and aft to make this an all-weather operation.

Lower luxury

Below, Marlow doesn’t skimp either. Through a portside door is the lower cabin, and it’s more than just a place to use the head or change outfits. Forward is a large V-berth, which helps make the Havana more of a weekender than a picnic boat. Midship are two large, opposing settees, thickly padded and suitable for sitting or lounging. A drop-in teak table converts this into a dining area for four or six persons. Cabin house fixed windows allow for ambient lighting, as does the forward egress hatch. Teak wood is used throughout the interior for walls, shelves and trim. The teak and holly flooring is a nice touch. A flat-screen TV is mounted to the wall, while AC keeps the environment climate-controlled. You won’t feel claustrophobic in here as there’s excellent standing room, just over 6 feet in clearance. Meal prep is easy thanks to the galley station. A two-burner Kenyon cooktop with potholders is next to a deep stainless sink. Above is a Sharp convection microwave oven and below is a U-Line undercounter fridge/freezer unit. A Bluewater Desalinator can produce up to 450 gallons of freshwater daily. Next to the galley is a full-height breaker control panel behind a glass door. Here, you’ll find all the switches, gauges and monitors needed to operate the 375 Havana. It’s a plethora of controls, but I would expect nothing less from Marlow. Aft is the private head, with Dometic toilet, Grohe shower and sink faucets, and vanity with granite counter. There’s a curtain and recessed drain underneath teak grating for showering.

All hands on deck

With a boat like the 375 Havana, the fun will be outdoors. Besides a nice cut of speed, there are several relaxing spots that can be easily used for fishing space. First, the deck is a full walkaround, which includes a few steps when you move to the foredeck area. Getting from fore to aft is effortless. There’s a relaxing sunpad lounger in front of the helm, including side grabrails. Or sit forward on the bow pads that flank a hi-low fiberglass table. Picture yourself relaxing at anchor, reading a good book while taking in the sun. Aft, there are options. Behind the helm seats is a fiberglass molded console, which contains an enclosed sink and undercounter storage for fenders or lines. Tucked on either side are fold-down padded seats — perfect for the crew to watch the trolling lines. Under the seats are compartments

for tackle drawers and gear. There’s plenty of cockpit space to add in a few lounge chairs for cruising time. For your fishing pleasure, there are two in-deck fishboxes with drains and handles so they can be lifted out. Rod holders and Rupp Top Gun outriggers trick out this machine. A center hatch offers access to machinery space, which includes a watermaker unit, pumps, piping and more. A livewell in the transom was converted into a freezer for keeping food or bait chilled. Doing double-duty is the flush-mounted transom door, allowing for easy boarding from the dock, access to the water and for fish to be landed quickly. On the starboard aft gunwale is an integrated fold-down boarding ladder. When deployed, swimmers can board from the built-in ladder and walk-through gunwale. Generous combing rings the cockpit. Under-gunwale storage is available on the port side. With a lineage that goes back a long way, there is no mistaking the Prowler 375 Havana as all Marlow. Take her for a ride. Hold the rum. H

WAS NOT THAT LONG AGO we were all asking where the water went. As recently as the summer of 2013, marinas across the Great Lakes were calling for federal aid to offset dredging costs as prolonged droughts left harbors too shallow for navigation, and marina docks sitting high and dry, sometimes yards from the water’s edge. Fast-forward six years and some of those same docks are now completely underwater. Steadily rising water levels across all five Great Lakes — fueled by multiple years of above-average rainfall — have culminated in massive flooding that has eroded shorelines, caused widespread property damage, swallowed seawalls and piers below the water’s surface, caused floating debris and left people everywhere wondering what in the world is going on? On July 5, Lake Superior reached a new record height of 603.22 feet above sea level — a level more than two feet above chart datum. Because water flows downstream, lakes Michigan and Huron also hit new heights in July, rising to 581.96 feet — a full 54 inches above chart numbers. Lake Erie eclipsed its all-time record height in July when it reached a level of 574.7 feet, a level 66 inches — or 5.5 feet — over chart datum. But even that massive flooding couldn’t match what was happening on Lake Ontario, which also surpassed its all-time high-water mark when it topped 249.02 feet, a whopping 69 inches above chart datum. Indeed, water, water everywhere.

IS IT CLIMATE CHANGE? New York Governor Andrew Cuomo believes we’re seeing the beginning of “a new normal” with its roots in climate change. Speaking on a North Country Public Radio program on May 21, the day after declaring a state of emergency in response to the flooding, Governor Cuomo called for adjustments to the way Great Lakes water levels are controlled. “I don’t understand why they don’t release more water earlier in the year. We know that this is going to happen in the spring. Why don’t they release more water earlier?” Cuomo asked. “We can’t just have the same loop every couple of years — the IJC saying ‘Oh boy, there’s more water than we anticipated’ and now… everybody is going to be flooded again.” Paul Allen, IJC Canadian manager, policy programs and communications,

HERE COMES THE RAIN AGAIN Great Lakes water levels began rising in 2014 as shifts in our weather patterns brought higher levels of precipitation, along with colder winters (remember the Polar Vortex?) and more ice cover that reduced over-winter evaporation. The effect was profound; within two years, water levels had returned to normal levels. The problem is the rain didn’t stop, and by 2017 lake levels had surged to the point there was widespread flooding. After a respite last year, the wet spring of 2019 — among the wettest in U.S. history — dumped an estimated 2.5 trillion gallons of water to lakes Huron and Michigan during the month of April alone. At the downstream end of the chain, Lake Ontario got all of that plus an additional 1.6 trillion gallons or so from its own local rainfall, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The result was widespread flooding that began in early spring and hasn’t let up since. Lake Ontario water levels are controlled in part by the MosesSaunders hydro control dam that regulates outflows to the St. Lawrence River. New water level management regulations implemented by the International Joint Commission (IJC) in December 2016 are being widely blamed for compounding the flood damage there. The agency’s new regulations — named Plan 2014 — replace the previous Plan 1958-D which had been in use since 1963. “There have been many changes over the decades since the original 1958-D plan was implemented, and after consulting stakeholders on both sides of the border it was generally agreed that it did not adequately consider the health of the ecosystem, the interests of recreational boating, climate changes and other considerations,” says Wayne Jenkinson, senior engineering advisor with the IJC in Ottawa. “What Plan 2014 cannot do is control the weather, and we are in the midst of an extremely wet period,” he continues. “As a result, we are seeing extremely high-water levels on all of the Great Lakes this year. Lake Erie is at record high levels and there is no dam to hold that water back. As a result, Lake Ontario water levels are very high this year, but they would have been the same or even a bit higher under the old Plan 1958-D.” Even so, many property owners on Lake Ontario are calling on Plan 2014 to be reviewed and have criticized the IJC for not responding quickly enough to address fluctuating water levels. “We have a lot of marina operators on Lake Ontario who are asking why the level wasn’t brought down further over the winter,” says Rick Layzell, CEO at Boating Ontario, the Canadian marine trade association with member marinas located on four of the five Great Lakes. “They’re doing it now. They’re discharging water into the St. Lawrence River at a level that exceeds the maximum allowable outflow rates, and they’ve been running that way for a month. Yet we still have boat docks and seawalls that are completely submerged.” Jay Lorenz, vice president of the Boating Industries Association of Upstate New York, was more direct. “We have people who have been on the water in this area for 70 years and they’ve never seen water this high,” he says. “The bottom line is this Plan 2014 needs to be repealed.”

says that criticism is unfair because it ignores one critical fact: That heavy rains over a wide area can pour water into the Great Lakes faster than it can be discharged through the Moses-Saunders dam. “There’s only one dam at the outlet of this massive system of lakes that the commission oversees the operation of,” Allen says. “When we have extreme, above-average water supplies across the system, this one dam cannot prevent flooding on Lake Ontario. Unfortunately, that’s the hard reality of the situation we are facing.” The notion that nature can add water to the system faster than we can direct it out to sea is supported by the fact widespread flooding also exists on lakes Michigan, Huron and Erie, none of which have outflows controlled by dams or water flow protocols. “We’re in uncharted waters right now,” says Nicki Poulan, executive director for the Michigan Boating Industries Association. “We’re hearing from many members that they’re struggling with this high water issue. We have our boat show in September and we’re looking at the marina where it’s held. Right now there’s water over the sidewalks there. Everybody’s struggling.”

THE COSTS ARE GOING TO BE ABSOLUTELY STAGGERING In spite of the flood conditions that have persisted through July, marinas across the Great Lakes remain open for business — even if getting to your boat might require rubber boots. While wet docks, sunken cleats and flooded power posts make life inconvenient, the high water will represent far more severe impacts on marina operators because once it does drop, much of their infrastructure will need to be repaired or replaced. “You have wooden docks that have been underwater for months,” Layzell says. “You have water and electric power to the slips which have also been underwater for months. You have fuel docks that remain submerged. The cribs that the docks sit on may have been compromised and may need to be rebuilt. Make no mistake about it, the clean-up costs for this are going to be absolutely staggering. “Damage to the docks is one thing,” he continues. “It’s the damage to buildings, to electrical components, to septic systems, to water supply systems, to fuel pumps and plumbing, to pavement and site landscaping that isn’t immediately apparent, but it’s still very real. We have no idea how extensive that damage is because right now everything’s still submerged.” The forecast at our press time (in mid-July) was for water levels to decline through the late summer and into the fall. That’s a timetable that leaves marina operators little time to assess the damage and get repair quotes before winter sets in. While some repair work can be completed through the winter months, much will have to wait until ice-out next spring, when marinas are already busy enough and demand for dock equipment and licensed contractors to install it will probably be sky-high. While insurance will likely cover most of the costs, it’s unrealistic to expect marinas to escape completely unscathed. Some damages will inevitably be disputed and excluded from insurance coverage. Deductibles against flood insurance are high as a rule, typically over six digits and potentially in excess of a half-million dollars, depending on location and the scope of the property. Expect marine trade associations on both sides of the international border to appeal to federal disaster relief agencies for emergency funding in an effort to at least partially offset those reconstruction costs. The IJC will also be looking for federal money in order to support a review of Plan 2014. “There’s been some public discussion about this with Commissioners as they toured around the basin and met with people affected by this,” Jenkinson says. “A review and an investigation will require resources, and we’re speaking with the U.S. and Canadian governments to obtain the necessary funding. That certainly is the intention of the IJC to take a closer look at it. But we need to be clear, there isn’t a silver bullet to stop flooding. We simply cannot control weather.” ★

hen a Taiwanese family of six showed up at the Manistique visitor information center in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Alan Barr was both blown away and gratified to know that his team’s decision to create a Discover Manistique mobile app was a good one. Barr, CEO and executive director of Schoolcraft Tourism & Commerce, says that months earlier the visitors had downloaded the app in their search for a beautiful place to visit in the United States, and they chose this region of the U.P. After touring the area for a week, the international travelers — the couple, their two children and one set of grandparents — returned to the visitor center to report that they had thoroughly enjoyed their stay. When the visiting father asked about the magnitude of the Great Lake, Barr told him that if he stood on the beach and looked south, he could wave at people in Chicago, 300 miles away. The family was in awe; they had flown in to Chicago and could relate to the distance. “People don’t realize the size of the Great Lakes,” Barr says. “Their depth, the size of the waves, that they have tides — they are really seas. Using the word ‘lake’ does them a disservice.”

Water everywhere

The city of Manistique is located on the Manistique River where it meets Lake Michigan and forms a naturally open harbor of refuge that, thanks to the constantly flowing 71-mile-long waterway, never freezes. The river, with its headwaters near Lake Superior, was an important resource for Native Americans for centuries before the first Europeans arrived and launched the fur trade in the 1600s. The logging and fishing industries followed in the 1800s. By 1871, the settlement was named after the Monistique River, the Ojibwa word for vermilion, the color of the tannin-tinted water. However, it was registered in error as Manistique and the spelling stuck. LAKELANDBOATING.COM

A viewing well in a self-propelled raft allows a look at giant trout and bubbling water that gushes at a rate of 10,000 gallons per minute from fissures in the limestone 40 feet below. With all of the timber harvesting going around it, Manistique was a busy lumber port and home of a substantial paper mill, which is now a plant that manufactures recycled paper. The deepwater harbor of refuge is still an active commercial fishing port and base for a tank barge that hauls fuel to Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. Manistique’s emergence as a tourist destination is relatively recent and important to the local economy. It has sparked new businesses and public and private investment in the community, including the city’s new rave-worthy Manistique Lakeshore Campground. With 50 RV and six tent sites on Lake Michigan, the campground is just west of the breakwater facing the bright red lighthouse that marks the harbor entry. The city has also invested in the municipal marina. Dredging of the harbor and constructing a new harbormaster building, showers, laundry and slips necessitated limiting access to the marina through the 2019 season. When it reopens in May of 2020 it will be, Barr says, “just the nicest little marina on upper Lake Michigan. It not only creates the best experience for boaters, but also helps them to stay a little longer, which makes it better for everyone.” More than 200 inland lakes — from the 8,400-acre Indian Lake to several in the 25-acre range — dot Schoolcraft County within a short drive of Manistique.

The coast less traveled

Barr believes interest in the area is growing because people are searching for new experiences. “Many of these people are well traveled, they’ve been everywhere and are looking for something they haven’t seen,” he says. “We’ve got amazing places ripe for discovery.” Laurie Johnson of Mackinaw Trail Winery & Brewery has noticed an uptick in the number of visitors who are on their first trip to the Upper Peninsula. She manages the Manistique on the Harbor Tasting Room of the first winery in the U.P., which was founded by Ralph and Laurie Stabile in 2004. room expands its capacity with outdoor seating where there’s live music every summertime Saturday evening. “Being on the water, the view is amazing,” Johnson says as she pours wine, beer and hard cider to a steady stream of new and returning guests. One regular who’s sipping white wine is Elizabeth Douglas, owner of Blue-Mystique across the river at Traders Point. The cluster of businesses at Traders Point also includes the Upper Crust Deli, where the riverside deck seating is in demand, the bread and cookies are freshly baked and three soups are made daily. Steps away, sisters Debbie Hase and Kathy Skok sell nauticalthemed home décor items, apparel, jewelry, accessories and gifts, and scoop Jilbert’s ice cream, a U.P. favorite. Douglas’ Blue-Mystique caters to “aquaholics,” defined on a T-shirt sold at her shop as having “an uncontrollable desire to be on or in the water splishing, splashing, and paddling away life’s problems.” Blue-Mystique rents kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, and offers evening, full moon and guided paddles. She also rents bicycles and hosts art classes for kids and adults. Although she lives in Wisconsin, she set up her business in the U.P. to fill a void that she saw on what she refers to as “the coast less traveled.”

“I just love Manistique,” Douglas says. “It’s a great harbor community. From here [at Traders Point] it’s an easy walk to a nice, historic downtown where there are shops, you can get a good shot of Irish whiskey, or a beer at one of the pubs. It’s relaxed. There are no crowds. I call it the undiscovered coast.”

The Cedar Street scene

Just a few blocks north of the marina, independent shops and restaurants line Cedar Street, the main vein of the Manistique business district. Kathy Jerde and Cindy King owned The Mustard Seed gift shop for more than 25 years before opening Bostique just a few doors away. The name, a combination of bohemian and Manistique, is reflected in the boho and contemporary merchandise and the store decor, Jerde explains. “It’s unconventional Manistique,” she says. “We have an urban, industrial look. It’s unexpected and eclectic.” The Mustard Seed was bought last year by Bristol and Jim Snider. Bristol has ties to Manistique — her grandfather worked in the forestry business and she fell in love with the area on family vacations. Their store carries the work of local artists, including beaver chew furniture by Leonad Fieber and ceramics from LaTulip Pottery, plus home goods, jewelry, apparel, baby items and books. Bristol is constantly reminded that they made the right move to Manistique when customers share how impressed they are with the beauty of the area. “You have people who are shocked by how gorgeous it is,” she says. It’s easy to spend a couple of hours browsing the other shops and grabbing a meal or a beverage along Cedar Street. Lake Effect Community Arts is a local artists’ co-op; Wheaty’s Pub is a known for its variety of wings; Tap21 pours — you guessed it — 21 different beers from its gorgeous back bar; and Cedar Street Café & Espresso Bar is a favorite breakfast and lunch spot. At the south end of Cedar Street, two murals greet visitors, each interpreting one word chosen by the local community that defines its vision for the future. The murals are part of artist Mia Tavonatti’s Power of Words project. Kathy Jerde thinks the chosen words, “Imagine” and “Discover,” are appropriate. “People who never got west of the [Mackinac] Bridge are discovering the area and realizing how beautiful it is,” Jerde says. “Manistique is evolving. We’re all trying to imagine its future.” ★

lthough it’s only in its fourth season, Port of Rochester Marina in Rochester, New York, sees a lot of boaters. Constructed at the mouth of the Genesee River just off Lake Ontario, the marina is erected on land that used to provide parking for a Fast Ferry that traveled from Rochester to Toronto. In 2016, the city dug out the existing parking lot and built the deep-basin, 55-slip marina with 400 feet of transient space. With its completion came the growth of the surrounding area. “It’s been a huge success because of this marina,” General Manager Marianne Warfle says of the area’s development. “Good things have happened surrounding it: New restaurants, additional foot traffic and it’s part of the Genesee Riverway Trail System. There’s a lot to offer in the immediate area.” Managed by F3 Marina, Port of Rochester has a reputation as being a boutique-style marina and a great place to stop, Warfle says, since they are all about hospitality and helping boaters have the best experience in Rochester as possible. It also has a greenhouse event space available to rent with 360-degree views of the water.

In addition to amenities that include floating slips, showers, a four-lane public launch ramp, laundry facilities and a boater’s lounge, the marina is also gated with 24-hour security so you know your boat is safe. Exhausted

I bought what I thought was a 1941 Century Runabout (with a length of 18 feet, 6 inches) while in college many years ago. I had zero knowledge of boats, let alone wooden boats. It had a Ford Flathead V8 engine and that intrigued me. My high hopes of restoring the boat at that time went by the wayside when I went into the Air Force for a short tour, which ended up becoming a career. While I was in the service, my parents sold the boat to a friend. In 2005, I mentioned to that friend that I would like first dibs on the boat if he ever thought of selling it. He did sell it back to me, and in October of 2009, we pulled it out of his barn. The boat was in horrible condition. I contacted Ramsey Brothers Restorations in Toledo, Ohio, to do the restoration work, which ended up being a total restoration. Ramsey Brothers maintain the boat as well. They did not believe the boat was a Century, and through their research determined that it is actually a 1936 Welch with a flathead motor. The motor was rebuilt by Griff’s Engine and Machine in Sandusky, Ohio, and now purrs like a kitten. A difficult activity during the rebuild was naming the boat. We had several names, but our son, Kurt, came up with the winner. Exhausted was settled on because of the time and money put into the boat; plus, that’s the exhaust end of the boat. Exhausted’s maiden voyage was in November 2017. We haven’t had much water time yet but intend to soon. Ramsey Brothers have taken Exhausted to several boat shows, winning “People’s Choice Award” and even “First Place” in its class at the Hessel, Michigan, boat show. The boat is a joy to have.
