ccording to Trishia Buzzard of Beecher City, if she could complete all four years of her bachelor’s degree at Lake Land College, she would do just that. “I am so glad I began with Lake Land College,” explained Buzzard. “Coming from a small high school, I liked that community college setting with smaller classes and instructors who knew you and took a genuine interest in your education. Lake Land offered me a stepping stone that made me more comfortable when I transferred to Eastern Illinois University in order to complete my four-year degree.”

systems. It is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university. Upon the completion of her associate degree, Buzzard transferred to EIU and entered that institution as a junior, taking classes to complete a bachelor’s degree in accounting. “All of my classes transferred with no problems at all,” said Buzzard. “Academically, I was worried going to Eastern I would be a little behind the students who started out there. I am not at all. Lake Land did an excellent job in preparing me for Eastern. I am so glad I chose to go to Lake Land!” Looking back at her time at Lake Land, Buzzard said that for two out of the three years she was at the college, she took all of her classes at the Kluthe Center in Effingham and in Vandalia, where several classes were offered.
alumna seamless transfer and “My commute to Eastern is about an hour. So I do miss having my classes available to me closer to home,” she said. Another aspect that was very important to Buzzard about pursuing her education was affordability. While at Lake Land, Buzzard held a full-time job at her family’s accounting firm, which allowed her to pay out-of-pocket and therefore graduate debt-free. “To complete my bachelor’s degree at EIU, I did have to take out students loans,” said Buzzard. “If I could have completed my four-year degree at Lake Land, I certainly would have stayed there.” Another valuable aspect that Buzzard noted was the excellent instructors she met while at Lake Land. According to her, teachers like Kathy Black, office technology instructor Cindy Phipps, accounting instructor and Erica Hotsinpiller, former math instructor, were always very supportive and willing to help her in whatever capacity they could. “I struggled in one of my math classes and turned to my instructor for extra help,” she said. “Her door was always open and it seemed to me it was more than just a job for her, but that she genuinely cared about my education and wellbeing. I appreciated that so much.”
“Coming from a small high school, I liked that community college setting with smaller classes and instructors who knew you and took a genuine interest in your education. Lake Land offered me a stepping stone that made me more comfortable when I transferred to Eastern Illinois University in order to complete my four-year degree.”
Upon her graduation from Eastern, which is anticipated for the fall of 2015, Buzzard intends to become a certified accountant and work for her family business in Beecher City. In the meantime, she will return to Lake Land to take sign language classes which will transfer back to EIU to complete a foreign language requirement. “Lake Land College has saved me time and money. It is a great school and I’m proud to be a Laker,” said Buzzard.

Don’t be!
Lake Land College is here to help! If you’re serious about attending college but need financial assistance, there are many opportunities to financially support you as you pursue your academic goals. To start this process, ALL students requesting financial aid must complete the 2015 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible.
After submitting your FAFSA, explore the following options to help you reach your academic and career goals. The following financial aid options do not require payback or reimbursement:

Those who do not qualify for state, federal or local scholarship options can explore: 1. Paying the bill in full by the due date 2. Signing up for the Nelnet tuition payment plan! LLC offers the Nelnet payment plan that allows students to spread their tuition payments out over the semester as opposed to paying their bill in full at one time. Explore the affordable, quality With so many colleges and universities out there, deciding on the right fit can be a tough choice. That’s why so many students begin their academic career at Lake Land College. According to a recent Noel Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory, the top four reasons students selected to attend Lake Land College are:
1. Cost 2. Financial Aid Opportunities 3. Academic Quality and Reputation 4. Personalized Attention “I looked at a technical school in Indiana and discovered it had very little hands-on training and was about four-times the cost of attending Lake Land. When I visited Lake Land, what drew me was the hands-on practice and experience I would gain in the classroom. I wanted to go to college where I would receive the hands-on training needed for the electronics field with up-to-date technology and resources to transfer to a four-year school.” -Brandi Hall, Clay City Freshman studying Electronic Engineering Technology
Now, let’s break these down to understand why Lake Land College is the top choice for so many. 1. Cost •
Lake Land College is more than just one of the most affordable higher education options for you. It’s the place that you can earn a college degree that will benefit you for the rest of your life. It’s an investment with an enormous return that no one can ever take away from you.

2. Scholarship Opportunities • The Lake Land College Foundation assists the college in developing and enhancing the educational opportunities and service to its students, alumni and citizens of the district, and a big part of that is providing academic scholarships to Lake Land College students. For the 2013-2014 academic school year alone, the Lake Land College Foundation awarded more than $409,000 through more than 430 scholarships. Scholarship awards range from $100 to $2,000 per year. Information pertaining to available scholarships, guidelines for individual scholarships and applications are available by contacting the Foundation Office at (217) 234-5363, emailing mkemper16178@lakeland.cc.il.us or visiting www.lakelandcollege.edu/foundation.
