A word from
Bob Pancoast Lake Land College Foundation President
A
s you read this annual report, the full meaning of why it’s fantastic to be part of the Lake Land College Foundation should become readily apparent. Our vision—a vision to build brighter futures and stronger communities through education—is being realized, and the generous support we have received means that we are not only achieving our vision but we are helping our students achieve their vision. During these times of intense economic pressure, financial support is especially critical for students struggling to complete their education. The continued support provided by individual donors, organizations, families and corporations has been the key difference-maker, allowing us to provide more opportunities for Lake Land students, and ultimately, for the communities we serve. The work done every day at Lake Land College propels us forward as a community, region and state. Our donors clearly recognize the value that a college education creates. Quite simply, history has proven irrefutably that no better investment can
Foundation President
be made toward ensuring the security of our nation and people, than the investment we make as donors in advancing higher education. On behalf of the students, board of directors and staff, I humbly thank you for your continued support of the Lake Land College Foundation. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to welcome Jacqueline “Jackie” Joines as the recently appointed executive director for college advancement. Jackie comes to Lake Land College with a wealth of experience in fundraising and the communities we serve. Jackie also holds the designation as a certified fundraising executive (CFRE) that attests to her knowledge and more than 20 years of fundraising experience. The Foundation looks forward to working with her and you, our donors, to create more opportunities and make a difference in the lives of our students.
Thank you from

magine giving a gift that touches the heart and engages the mind for a lifetime.
You have done exactly this with your donation to the Lake Land College Foundation. We are so proud to highlight your generosity within the pages of this report. We are also proud to share the stories of our students who are successful in achieving their goals because of your investment in them. Many of our Lake Land College students face greater challenges than the typical college student. One out of every two Lake Land students works at least 21 hours per week while in school to support their educational costs. They often support a family while holding down a full-time job. Even with one of the lowest tuition rates in the state of Illinois, the cost of attending Lake Land College can be a stressful burden for students.
communities’ future entrepreneurs, nurses, dental hygienists, engineers, auto mechanics, cosmetologists, agricultural professionals and business leaders. Their contributions to our communities all started with the dream of an education. By supporting the Foundation, you are not just making dreams come true, you are investing in the economic viability of east central Illinois. Thank you for putting your trust in Lake Land College, and more importantly, for believing in our students. Your ongoing financial support allows Lake Land College to continue engaging minds and changing lives through the power of learning.
That burden is eased when students learn they have received a Foundation scholarship. During the past year, the Lake Land College Foundation invested in the success of 389 scholarship recipients who are our

Farm Credit Illinois -
Generously established an Agricultural Division Endowment
Lake Land College Foundation receives generous donation from Farm Credit Illinois F
arm Credit Illinois, based in Mahomet, recently gifted the Lake Land College Foundation $50,000 as the inaugural gift for a newly established Agricultural Division Endowment. The company has also committed an additional gift in the amount of $25,000 to establish the Farm Credit Illinois Endowment, and has committed $5,000 each year for the next five years to the Foundation. According to Dave Cox, director of alumni relations and annual giving, these gifts will be used to support the agriculture programs at the college in addition to supporting scholarships for agriculture students. “We are very appreciative of the commitment that Farm Credit Illinois has shown to the agriculture industry and particularly our agriculture program and students at Lake Land College,” said Cox. “It will serve as a model for others to partner with Lake Land College and provide the resources needed for a first-class college experience training
our students for the workforce in a variety of programs. We anticipate a long, productive partnership and look forward to seeing our students utilize the Farm Credit Illinois Learning Laboratory.” In exchange for the donation, Lake Land named room 123 in the West Building the Farm Credit Illinois Learning Laboratory. The naming rights will be in effect from January 2014 through December 2025. “We’ve moved our company’s focus from how we can be successful, to how we can be significant,” said Dave Owens, president and CEO of Farm Credit Illinois. “We wondered how we could be significant to our agriculture community. So, we decided that there would be no better way to make a difference than with our youth in agriculture.”
Sam Naroze, Mattoon - Northside Ford Scholarship Recipient
Helping a family achieve its dreams S
am and Susu Naroze glow when talking about Lake Land College.
“Our experience with Lake Land College is the best experience. It is a great place to achieve your dreams and goals!” Sam said. Their goals continue to grow as Sam is working at KC Summers as an automotive technician and Susu is a cosmetologist at Hair It Is, located in Mattoon. However, the path to graduation this past May was not always easy for the couple, who attended college at the same time. “Since we moved to the United States, the first thing we had to work on was learning the English language. Because we live in Mattoon, we found that Lake Land College was the nearest place so we started and learned a lot. People at Lake Land are so helpful and hard workers, too,” Sam said. Once they became proficient in the English language, the couple set its sights on careers and enrolled full-time at Lake Land College. “We both worked very hard to succeed. I was
working 12-hour shifts and attended school in the morning,” Sam explained. “My wife did the same plus she was also taking care of our children.” Not only was the schedule challenging, but the financial aspects were a burden. “The scholarship I received from the Foundation helped us to meet the financial challenges of school and home,” Sam said. “With working full-time and both of us being in school, any extra assistance was a huge help.“ Sam received the Northside Ford Scholarship. The couple has inspired friends to enroll in Lake Land this fall. “We both recommend Lake Land to all of our family and friends both here and around the world. Thank you so much to all the staff, teachers and everyone who works at Lake Land. You all helped us to achieve our dreams.”

What A Difference They Made . . . Over the years, several individuals named the Lake Land College Foundation in their estate plans. Each person met with Lake Land College staff and a personal wealth manager to determine the right option to establish a legacy gift. Their memory lives on in our scholarship recipients every year. We want to celebrate their generosity and share how they make a difference each and every day in the lives of our students.
Floyd T. Curl
M
r. Curl worked tirelessly to help found Lake Land College in the early 1960s. He served on the original steering committee that brought Lake Land into existence and served as the first chair of the Lake Land College Board of Trustees. He received the Clem G. Phipps Exemplary Trustee Award posthumously in 2011. His dedication and service to the College went beyond his lifetime. Mr. Curl decided to name the Lake Land College Foundation as a beneficiary in his will which has allowed his legacy of continued service to benefit 20 Neoga students since 2001.
Gerald G. Fedrigon
I
n 1968, Mr. Fedrigon was the second counselor hired at the “new college in Mattoon, Lake Land College. During the next 20 years, he helped thousands of students earn a college education, first as a counselor and later as the director of admissions and records. His love of Lake Land College and his students motivated him to name the Lake Land College Foundation as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. We appreciate the opportunities this new endowment will give our students in reaching their educational goals in the years to come.

Consuello S. Luttrell
A
nyone who knew Mrs. Luttrell knew she would not take no for an answer, especially when she was seeking funding to support Lake Land College students and the Kluthe Center. An educator throughout her life, Consuello helped countless young people in her community any way she could. She served on the Lake Land College Foundation Board of Directors for 25 years. Her efforts won her many accolades, including being selected as the first woman to be awarded the Lake Land College Distinguished Service Award. Consuello was determined to make sure she continued to give and serve after her life’s end. She decided to leave a legacy through a bequest in her estate that has helped 158 students over the past 16 years.
Joe and Alleen Stephens
M
r. and Mrs. Stephens were involved in church, the community and agricultural organizations. Having lived through the Depression, the couple took great pride in their farm life and understood the importance in helping others who wanted to make their life in farming. They also appreciated the care they received in their later years from their local healthcare workers. The Stephens created a gift in their trust, naming the Lake Land College Foundation, which has supported 106 students through scholarships in agriculture and nursing. Bailey Staggs, Charleston - Neal Family Scholarship Recipient
Foundation scholarship offers financial relief, assisting with debt-free education hen Bailey Staggs of Charleston began to consider a college education, she knew without a doubt Lake Land College was her first choice.
W
Another important aspect about attending Lake Land for Staggs is that she will graduate debt free, which for her is an accomplishment and point of pride.
“Next year, my mother and step-father will have three children attending college, which is no doubt financially difficult,” explained Staggs. “By attending Lake Land, I am saving money and still receiving an excellent education that will allow me to transfer to complete a bachelor’s degree at Eastern Illinois University.”
“It feels really, really good knowing I won’t be in debt when I graduate with my associate degree,” explained Staggs. “I feel very secure at Lake Land and I’m so glad I came here because the faculty and staff really want to help you out and see you succeed, and that means a lot when you’re working hard to reach your goals.”
To help fund her educational endeavors, Staggs applied for a Lake Land College Foundation Scholarship and received the Neal Family Annual scholarship, which helped fund her summer 2014 semester.
Majoring in psychology, Staggs plans to complete a bachelor’s degree and pursue a master’s degree in the coming years. She aspires to one day become a children’s psychologist or work in the criminal justice field.
While she works two jobs and receives some financial support from her mother to attend school, Staggs said that this scholarship helped her tremendously. “My parents were very proud that I was able to find scholarship money on my own,” she said. “Every little bit helps and receiving the scholarship offered me and my family financial relief over the summer term.”

Glenney recognized with Lake Land College Foundation’s Crystal Swan Award L
ast fall at the annual Lake Land College Foundation meeting, board member Paul Glenney, Mattoon, received the Foundation’s Crystal Swan Award. This award recognizes his outstanding contributions to the foundation.
Paul Glenney of Mattoon received the Lake Land College Foundation’s Crystal Swan Award. He is pictured with Lake Land College director of alumni relations and annual giving, Dave Cox. This annual award is presented to a foundation board member for commitment and outstanding contributions to the Foundation.
“Paul is a true philanthropist at heart and believes in the mission of the Foundation,” said Dave Cox, director of alumni relations and annual giving. “He and his wife Kathy support the only scholarship that focuses on minorities or our international student population and he is always engaged in conversation as to how we can do better as an organization. He is a pleasure to have on our board and we definitely appreciate his service.”
According to Cox, Glenney does not hide his appreciation and passion for the Foundation and the students at Lake Land College. He is easily approachable and always willing to help whether it be to attend one of the cultural events hosted by the Foundation or by entertaining attendees by performing music at a quarterly board meeting. “Selecting a recipient for the Crystal Swan Award is never an easy task,” said Cox. “We have many board members who are deserving of this recognition. However, one board member did stand out this year.” Cox said that Glenney is generous with time and efforts as he regularly attends all meetings and a majority of committee meetings that he serves on.

Although the Foundation awarded $323,629 in scholarships, there still is a great, unfilled need. Unfortunately, there were more than 600 students who applied that we were unable to assist. The average scholarship awarded was $830, totaling about one-fifth of tuition.
