BE READY TO GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY.

At Lakeland, we believe in a practical education for powerful thinkers. Our students learn in real-world scenarios, alongside expert faculty and inquisitive peers who are committed to handson, collaborative learning. From our 3,000-acre Student-Managed Farm — Powered by New Holland to our research and emergency training centres, to our state-of-the-art learning labs, Lakeland students kick-start their careers before they even graduate.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES DIPLOMA at Lakeland

Find your path in four steps:

1

Choose one of six majors:

• General Environmental Sciences

• Environmental Conservation and Reclamation

• Environmental Monitoring and Resource Management

• Land Stewardship and Conservation

• Renewable Resource Management

• Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation

Or take the one-year Environmental Sciences certificate.

Develop core knowledge and skills in your first year. This includes soils, plants, wildlife, aquatic life, ecology, mapping and GPS, and environmental sustainability.

3

LEARNING IN ACTION.

Quinn Hlus, an avid rodeo competitor, came to college with two goals: to get a great education, and to compete on the Lakeland College rodeo team. She blew past both goals, making it to the Canadian College Finals Rodeo, while discovering many other interests and strengths to explore during her time as a Lakeland student.

Dig deeper in your second year. Take courses such as reclamation field methods, wetland classification and management, water conservation and regulations, and wildlife biology.

Take your knowledge to the real world, or grow your career tool set at Lakeland with:

• A second major

2 4

• Our Bachelor of Applied Science: Environmental Management degree, which features an eight-month practicum.

As part of the Bachelor of Applied Science: Environmental Management (BASEM) program, Quinn traveled to Sri Lanka to research how the environmental practices there compare to those in Canada. That opportunity, paired with her Capstone project, helped her realize her strengths as a technical researcher and writer.

“The research and technical report-writing

aspects of environmental science were very challenging,” she says, “but very rewarding in the end, as I won the ECO Canada Student Impact Award for my Capstone presentation.”

At Lakeland, Quinn had the opportunity to communicate and problem-solve with her program leaders, which pushed her to find her voice and encouraged her to become even

more involved. Student ambassador, peer tutor, emcee, organizer, volunteer, and winner of the President’s Medal — these are just a few titles that she has worn.

These experiences on campus, paired with our intentional learning environments and supportive faculty, are what led Quinn to find her true potential.

CONNECTED BY COLLABORATION.

After the Accounting major graduated from Lakeland’s Business Administration program in 2021, Jeru launched his own bookkeeping company. And to keep the momentum he built at Lakeland, he has enrolled at Athabasca University to pursue a degree in commerce.

Jeru Lopez Business Administration, Accounting Major, Class of 2021

As a recent alumnus, Jeru Lopez can look back at his time as a Lakeland College student and see one clear theme: that the connections he formed on campus helped shape the person he is today.

BUSINESS PROGRAMS

at Lakeland

The hands-on collaboration that Jeru and his classmates experienced in Lakeland’s Business Administration program led to deep connections, lifelong friendships, and a true sense of belonging. He learned that working hard alongside your peers — while it can have its challenges — helps you realize what you’re truly capable of as an individual.

Jeru also found collaboration to be a key part of his role as the president and the vice-chair of the Students’ Association of Lakeland College, but in this case, it was virtual collaboration.

“My team and I did a lot of work helping to consolidate financial resources from both campuses, while we were also organizing events and showing our support to students,” he says. “It was challenging to do virtually, but having many different perspectives helped lead us to the best outcomes.”

This type of real-world experience is what helps Lakeland students find the confidence to lead. Students have opportunities to solve real problems, with the support of peers and faculty, which means they feel safe enough to try something new.

Lakeland has a strong partnership with Athabasca University, providing two ways to extend the learning experience at the Lloydminster campus for business students: Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Management.

Early Childhood Education LEADS THE WAY

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) program has a history of innovation. It launched Lakeland’s student-managed concept by starting the on-campus Play Program managed by diploma students.

READY FOR THE REAL WORLD.

• starting dual credit courses so high school students can earn high school and college credits

• offering online courses in French

• creating a virtual play program practicum for online students

ECE is one of seven Human Services programs. Others include American Sign Language and Deaf Culture Studies, Animal Assisted Wellness, Child and Youth Care Counsellor, Community Mental Health, Community Support Practitioner and Educational Assistant. Lakeland also offers Éducation à La Petite Enfance.

Practicums put everything into perspective for Kara Mouly.

Kara completed four practicums throughout the two-year Child and Youth Care program and with each practicum, she learned more about career paths and more about herself.

Support from Lakeland College’s carpentry instructors took Tyler Bendfeld farther than he thought possible - from the carpentry lab to the podium twice.

He came home from the Skills Alberta Provincial competition and Skills Canada National event, earning gold and silver respectively, and with more confidence in his abilities than ever.

“Lakeland has really pushed me to grow in my profession,” Tyler says. “It has made me a proficient and effective carpenter as well it’s made me a more social and open-minded person inside and out of the workplace.”

After his impressive feat at the skills competitions, Tyler is already planning to compete again with hopes of more medals. He’s also eager to continue his training and become a red seal carpenter.

“The faculty at Lakeland have always been helpful, kind and informative,” Tyler says. “They’ve taught me more than I ever imagined I would learn. They always greet you with a smile and are happy to have a conversation, whether it’s about school or what I did

on the weekend.”

Training at Lakeland also gave Tyler the opportunity to learn from his fellow students while living in residence with people from other trades and programs.

“The kindness and ability of everyone to get along at Lakeland was amazing,” he explains.

WHERE FARM LIFE MEETS CAMPUS COMMUNITY.

Caylee Dorval Animal Science Technology, Class of 2021; Current Bachelor of Agriculture Technology student

Caylee is adding a couple more years to her Lakeland experience by taking the Bachelor of Agriculture Technology program. She aspires to work in the feed or genetics field after graduation in 2023.

Caylee Dorval, an Animal Science Technology student who graduated in 2021, knew that if she wanted to prepare for a successful career in agriculture, a truly hands-on college experience at Lakeland would be her best first step.

PREPARING AGRICULTURAL LEADERS

Lakeland offers first-hand experience, on (and beyond) the farm.

Lakeland College’s 3,700+ acre StudentManaged Farm — Powered by New Holland (SMF), provides more than enough opportunities to learn by doing.

With the goal of running a successful ag enterprise, students are responsible for everything from settling their unit’s budget to production decisions and long-term planning. Part of managing an SMF unit at Lakeland is providing reports to peers, faculty, and industry leaders throughout the year, which typically highlight the demanding yet supportive experience students have at Lakeland.

The Animal Science Technology program isn’t the only thing that has made an impact on Caylee at Lakeland. Living on campus has helped her build lasting friendships, and being a part of extracurriculars like the rodeo team and stock club showed Caylee that Lakeland is more than just a college — it’s a community.

Our Student-Managed Farm — Powered by New Holland (SMF) has been paving the way for hands-on agricultural education since 1990.

Crop Technology and Animal Science Technology include SMF courses. You’ll help manage crop, commercial beef, purebred beef, dairy, equine, livestock, or livestock research units.

With five streams to choose from, Agribusiness opens doors to career paths across the ag supply chain.

Animal Health Tech and Vet Med Assistant students work in our new, cutting-edge Animal Health Clinic.

Lakeland is staying ahead of the curve with new programs like the Bachelor of Agriculture Technology Degree, the Agricultural Sustainability Diploma, and the Post-bachelor Commercial Agriculture Production Certificate.

A SMART STEP FORWARD.

Coming from a small town, Alana Olson was worried she’d be lost in a larger post-secondary school. Drawn to Lakeland College by its size and the promise of a basketball scholarship, she found that college could be more than a place to excel in athletics and academics – she found it was a place to belong.

“Lakeland was the perfect environment for me to transition from high school to postsecondary. Increasing my involvement in the campus and community allowed me to gain a deeper appreciation for everything Lakeland offers students.”

Alana quickly immersed herself in campus life, living in residence and

working with the Students’ Association.

“Being able to develop relationships with everyone on campus is beneficial in so many ways,” says Alana, a thirdyear guard for the Rustlers women’s basketball team.

“The faculty have been the most outstanding part of my journey at Lakeland. The professors I have

taken classes from are not only incredibly skilled in their fields, but they are also approachable and personable.”

By starting her postsecondary education in University Transfer, Alana has grown her confidence and built foundational skills she’ll use beyond Lakeland as she continues to work towards her goal of becoming a physician.

For Jon Albert, that meant returning to Lakeland College.

Previously, he completed Academic Upgrading, took University Transfer courses and played for the Rustlers men’s basketball team. In 2016, he obtained a Journeyperson Gasfitter (A) ticket but his Lakeland journey wasn’t over yet.

“To become a power engineer is something I always wanted to achieve. The thing that surprised me the most was being able to transfer my work ethic from the field to the classroom,” says Jon, who’s originally from Sweetgrass First Nation.

With support from Lakeland’s award-winning learning success strategist, Karen Harris, Jon discovered new study techniques and leaned on his strengths. His hard work paid off. Jon was inducted into the 2022 President’s Circle and he landed on the dean’s list, which opened many paths to receiving scholarships and bursaries.

“Achieving a 3.5 GPA and making the dean’s list was exciting. I will forever be proud of seeing my name on that list, as I am a 42-year-old student who was also a former high school dropout.”

Outside of the Energy Centre, Jon’s college experience included being a member of Lakeland’s Indigenous Student Council. Together, they organized a walk for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and raised a teepee on campus to share traditional teachings with the campus community, among other initiatives.

PRACTICAL EDUCATION. PEOPLE WHO CARE.

FACULTY FEATURE
Karen Harris Learner Success Strategist, Gold Winner in Student Support Services from the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics in 2020

Student success? We’ve got a strategist for that.

TO HELP

There’s a reason why more than 1,000 Lakeland students have worked with Karen Harris. And why they often ask for her by name when they arrive on campus. Karen is Lakeland’s learner success strategist, and she’s made it her life’s work to help students thrive on campus, so they can do the same when they leave.

She recognizes each student at Lakeland as an individual learner, each with their own way of working, studying, and experiencing life. And while individual attention is what makes the most impact on students, Karen believes that the students flourish because of what they already bring to the table.

“Lakeland students are committed to their goals,” she says. “They are excited about their future and are willing to challenge themselves in new areas. They want more — they want to expand who they are. I love their enthusiasm.”

When Karen meets with students, she identifies the tools and strategies that they’ll benefit from the most: what will spark their own instinctual ability to learn. That thoughtful support — paired with Lakeland’s culture of belonging and dedication to hands-on learning — creates opportunities for students to discover who they are, what they’re good at, and what they want in their futures.

Make the most of your Lakeland College experience with our Student Support Services. Whether you need a helping hand academically or personal support, Lakeland has the resources to help you excel at Lakeland and beyond.

CONFIDENCE BEYOND THE CLASSROOM.

Khyler Yockey came to Lakeland College looking for a career that would help her change the lives of those around her.

Khyler enrolled in the clinical esthetician program, which promises a personal, one-on-one learning experience.

At the end of her one-year program, Khyler found that the biggest life changed through her experience was her own.

“As an individual struggling with mental health issues, my anxiety controlled my life before coming to the college,” she says. “My instructors and classmates helped me

gain confidence in myself and come out of my shell.”

Part of the lessons she learned at Lakeland went far beyond the classroom – and onto the provincial and national stage. With the support of her instructors and classmates, Khyler represented Lakeland at Skills Alberta, winning gold and earning a spot at Skills Canada National competition, where she was awarded bronze.

“These were such life-

changing experiences that have helped me develop both my personal and professional skills,” says Khyler, a secondgeneration alumna.

“It was a truly once-ina-lifetime experience that wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the staff and students at Lakeland. I have learned how to push past my comfort zones and have trust in myself. That is something I will never forget.”

“I loved my time at Lakeland. The support of my instructors is unparalleled to any education I’ve ever had before.”

After graduation, Mandy completed a degree in interior design with Yorkville University, thanks to Lakeland’s transfer agreement with the university. Her thesis project allowed her to volunteer, giving back
