Hello Folks!
It has been a harsh winter with record temps but we are getting ready for spring. Who has Cabin Fever? We all do—despite the fact that we enjoyed a beautiful winter wonderland in Lakes Country during these past months. This time of year has its own charm and I must admit that I really enjoy the slower paced winter months in Minnesota a lot. There is so much to do and explore during that time.
However, enough is enough and we are waiting for the snow to melt, the grass to turn green, and the trees to fill in with leaves again. It’s coming and it’s coming soon! For the past years we have been building our WKND community and are very proud to present to you this new and bigger format for our print publication. We are featuring more lifestyle and community stories and grew our content to 72 pages. Whether you live in Lakes Country or come to visit—you may find something new to discover in this magazine. We are very proud to publish an exclusive story about Adam Thielen with an interview of his parents and never released childhood pictures. What a Lake Life story! To find out what’s happening on a daily basis, go to our website filled with news, more recipes and an area event schedule. Our platform is mobile friendly and a good place to get ready for the wknd! We have also been recording a podcast for the past 2 years and you can listen to interviews from local makers, founders, fishermen, and other lake life enthusiasts. Check out our archive with more than 90 episodes and stories. We release a new podcast every Wednesday to get you ready for your WKND. We'd also like to invite you to our EXPO event at the Civic Center in downtown Fargo coming up March 22-23. More than 50 vendors showcase lake life on the floor. On stage we have live programs on both days. Find more details in this issue about our event and join us. We charge no admission to explore lake life. Enjoy this new issue of our LAKE LIFE WKND magazine! We hope to see you at our EXPO event!

SHORE BOARDS HAND-CRAFTED IN MINNESOTA
A honey-do project turned into a business, Tim Shore from Shore Boards is our ‘Made in Minnesota’ feature. His wooden stand-up paddle and wakesurf boards are gliding their way into Lakes Country. Ask any of Minnesota’s residents, born-and-raised folk or honored transplants, and you’ll hear from both that they have an abundance of pride for their land of 10,000 lakes. Take a closer look through shop windows when strolling down big and smalltown streets and find the words “Made in Minnesota” prominently on display. From signature “hot-dishes” and craft beer, to the locally sourcing craftsmen and their artisan handmade goods, the love and support of all things Minnesotan is evident.

love was complete. Its maiden voyage was on an early morning on calm waters in a northern Minnesota lake. And as luck would have it, Shore’s board was the only one on the water that morning, letting him relish in his accomplishments in the board’s natural habitat. “The first time I took the board out on the lake, it was that cool moment taking in nature and to know I made this…
TIM SHORE, SHORE BOARDS
In Anoka, MN, a smaller town of about 18,000 just a north of the Twin Cities, resides self-taught craftsman Tim Shore cornering the market in handcrafted, all-wood water and street sport boards. Shore Boards is his company creating beautiful, custom and environmentally conscious stand up paddle, wakesurf and long boards for anyone and everyone. It all started in 2013 when Shore’s wife, Jen, expressed that she wanted a SUP (stand up paddle) board of her own. Dutifully, Shore started investigating and disappointedly found that most of what was being offered didn’t measure up to the standards he required for his wife. Falling down this research rabbit hole, Shore found himself discovering the wood-working methods of surfers from the coasts that crafted their own surf and SUP boards. Not a carpenter by trade yet feeling inspired, he hunkered down and started this new journey. Bank manager by day, wood working craftsman by night (and weekends) Shore pursued to fulfill his wife’s request, and after 200 hours and 18 months of trial and error, his labor of

It was a really surreal moment and made me think there’s really something here,” said Shore. But his journey did not stop there; orders for friends and family started pouring in and Shore’s new skill was put to work. Fast forward 5 years, with a bigger and better manufacturing facility and a new passionate business partner established, Shore can fulfill orders fulltime. “This is fairly unique… There are only a few people in the US making wood boards,” and Shore has anchored his spot among this group. Shore also has a patent on his rib/ skeleton system used in the hollow boards that makes them stronger. These boards are a sturdier alternative to their foam counterparts dominating this market, while also offering personality and beauty. Shore makes it a point to use local and durable woods like cedar, basswood, maple, walnut, and paulownia. These variations in wood not only add to the sturdiness of each piece,
they showcase Shore’s craftsmanship to ensure each board is as unique as its rider.
“They are all hand-crafted & all wood which makes each piece unique.” The benefits of having a wooden board go far beyond just the pleasantries accompanied with such a statement piece. “The beautiful thing about a wood board is you can sand it and refinish it where as if you structurally damage boards of other materials, they can’t be repaired and into the landfill it goes,” says Shore. For newbies and hardcore athletes, investing in a quality board will ensure the shredding of whatever surf or turf you choose will be maximized. The bonds
of human being and board will be long-standing (even if you still fall off more often than not). Shore recognizes and practices these principles and is taking the love he has for making these works of art to giving back to the community in many ways. Every year, Shore contributes to the community be it through charity donations or offering his time to positively impact the people surrounding and supporting him. Also understanding that a newcomer or occasional board rider is hesitant about such an investment, Shore is also offering classes to the public to come to his shop and craft their own works of art! With each board taking around 15-20 hours for an expert to complete, attendees will spend 2-3 hours a night for 7 days building their own board. “We have people coming in from all over. One guy is coming all the way from California who is going to come build his board and we are going to ship it back for him.” So, whether you’re into practicing yoga on a SUP board atop calm waves on these 10,000 lakes, shredding the waves on a wakesurf board behind a boat, or cruising your way through the city streets on a longboard, consider a ride with some MN pride. Tim Shore and Shore Boards will support you all the way. shore-boards.com

HARD WORK & HEART
In the summer, Detroit Lake is filled with boats and swimmers and the downtown boardwalk is crowded with families and young people on their way to grab pizza at the local Zorbaz. In the winter, a frozen castle glistens in the cold sun and at night, the lake is spotted with lights as friends fish through the ice. This is Detroit Lakes, a lake town in northern Minnesota with a population just over 9,000, rising to nearly 13,000 in the summer months. It’s known as a summer destination location, the hub of Minnesota’s famous lakes country, with coastlines of restaurants, shops, and charming lake homes. In recent years, however, the popular lake town has seen the spotlight for another reason — the rising fame of one of its own: Professional football star Adam Thielen.
THE CULTURE THAT SHAPED ADAM THIELEN CAITLIN AND ADAM THIELEN
25
By now, you probably know the story. Adam excels in basketball and football as a Detroit Lakes “Laker,” accepts a $500 scholarship to Mankato for football, graduates undrafted, road trips to Chicago to pay for his own tryouts, and gets noticed by the Minnesota professional football team. Fast forward a few years, and he most recently wrapped up the 2018-2019 season with 113 receptions, 1,373 yards, and nine touchdowns, securing his place as one of the greatest wide receivers in the nation. But the story really begins in a house on the outskirts of town, where Adam grew up with his two older sisters, Amanda and Angela, and his parents, Pete and Jayne. The family lived in a relatively secluded area on 20 acres of wooded land. In front of the house was a large yard, roughly 70’x100’, which Adam regularly turned into a football field for yard games; mowing the lawn and laying out string and cones for boundaries. His parents remember watching as one by one, the neighbor kids would show up to play. “We had a front window with a ledge, and we’d just sit and watch them play sometimes,” Adam’s father Pete said. “Sometimes there’d be ten kids that would come to our yard, walking or riding bikes because we were in the country.” “We became the neighborhood hang out,” Adam’s mom Jayne added.
26
SPRING 2019
THIELEN PLAYING FOOTBALL FOR MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MANKATO
Neighbor kids Janaye and her younger brother Davis Johnson carved a dirt path through the woods so they could make the quarter-mile walk to Adam’s house. Janaye was Adam’s age, and she usually played quarterback. Thielen, of course, played wide receiver. She’d practice her spiral while Adam practiced his toe drag, wearing his wornout Randy Moss or Cris Carter jersey and imitating the moves he saw them make on Sundays. “He was insane at backyard football,” Janaye said in an interview with the Duluth News Tribune. “He took it seriously.” Now, Adam has joined his heroes in a league of the greats with chart-topping stats and a success story that has become legendary in lakes country, where his #19 jerseys can be spotted in shops, school hallways, and all throughout town.
And yet, ask Adam about it now and he’s quick to deflect and exhibit a humility that has become characteristic of ‘Minnesota nice’ culture. In his Players’ Tribune story “Made in Minnesota”, Thielen writes this: “Minnesota is a blue-collar state. We don’t like the spotlight. We just like to work hard.”
“A MIDWEST STATE OF MIND” This ‘work hard, stay humble’ mentality traces back through the lives of his parents, Pete and Jayne, who also grew up in northern Minnesota. Pete worked at a gas station in Callaway, MN and Jayne grew up in Sebeka, MN, before they attended high school together in Detroit Lakes.
ADAM AND HIS SIBLINGS ENJOYING LAKE LIFE
Growing up, they spent summers at the lake, gathering with family and spending long hours outside. They always loved the close-knit community of the area, the strength of the local church, and the trust that your neighbors always had your back. When starting their own family, they knew they wanted to give their kids a similar experience. “We loved where we lived,” Jayne said. “We saw no reason to move away.” So they built their house in the woods. And they bought a camper. And every summer weekend they could, they’d head out to camp near the lakes and spend quality family time together. They’d have campfires, fish, swim, play board games, and just talk.
“Minnesota is a blue-collar state. We don’t like the spotlight. We just like to work hard.” ADAM THIELEN
“When we went camping, there was no distraction at all,” Pete said. “We’d spend two or three hours by the campfire. Everyone sitting around and talking. You were out there just enjoying each other.” In the winter, they went snowmobiling, downhill skiing, and sometimes Pete would take Adam ice fishing. No matter the weather, be it a heat wave or a blizzard, Sundays were always family time. “The rule was we’d turn off the TV, and no one could have friends over. And we’d play games or spend time together,” Jayne said. “We raised our kids in an age where a lot of family units were falling apart. So we worked really hard at keeping ours together.”

LAKE LIFE WKND

Hard work. It’s something Pete and Jayne grew up with; an understanding that work was not something to be skirted or avoided. It was something to be embraced, an inevitable part of achieving your goals. “We both grew up in a culture that valued hard work,” Jayne said. “You worked for what you wanted — it wasn’t given to you." This work ethic is one Adam exhibited from the beginning, throughout a success story that is more about hard work and grit than it is serendipity. “I like to think that Minnesota mentality has served me pretty well,” he writes in The Players’ Tribune. “The odds have pretty much always been stacked against me, but I kept my head down, worked hard, and trusted that the rest would take care of itself.” In Adam’s case, it worked. What’s more, his success hasn’t seemed to change the attitude of humility and kindness that goes hand-inhand with the work ethic of the Midwest; a kindness he saw growing up in the sweet lady next door who brought over cookies when they moved in (and to every new neighbor), in his grandfather who spent much of his time volunteering or visiting the nursing home, in his parents who always put the emphasis on family time first. “That’s the kind of mindset I want to have,” Thielen said in a Star Tribune article. “And if I do lose that mindset, I want somebody to slap me in the face and say, ‘Hey, pick it up and get back to the roots.’” This attitude has set Thielen apart both on and off the field. Even from the beginning, it wasn’t only his speed and ability that caught Coach Zimmer’s eye. It was only when he realized Adam’s heart, Zimmer said in Duluth News Tribune, that he knew there was a chance.
ADAM THIELEN AT THE 2019 PRO BOWL

SPRING 2019
DO THE RIGHT THING It’s that same heart that led Adam and his wife Caitlin to unveil a new initiative in September 2018: The Thielen Foundation. The Thielen Foundation is actively creating programs to serve, educate, and inspire youths so they’re “equipped and empowered to reach their full potential in life” — a mantra inspired by the Thielen’s own family motto to “achieve your full potential.” “I’m very thankful for all the support that I’ve received to get where I am today. And it’s important to give thanks,” Theilen said. “But I know actions speak louder than words. That’s why Caitlin and I created the Thielen Foundation — to give back and help others, with a focus on youth development.”
The launch of the Foundation was far from a surprise for Adam’s parents; the prospect has been on Adam and Caitlin’s hearts for years, they said.

“They both have a heart for kids, and for addressing mental health,” Jayne added. “Through prayer, that kept coming back to them.”

“They talked about what they should do for at least three years,” said his dad, Pete. “They knew they wanted to give back, they just weren’t sure of the route. Then when they went and visited the hospitals, they saw a need.”

With a clear route in mind, the first step for Adam and Caitlin in launching the Foundation was to seek out financial partners who believed in their mission. Not so far away, another organization with similar roots took notice. Their values reflected those at the heart of the Thielen Foundation: Work hard, have a little fun. Better the places you live. Know when to ask for help, know when to offer it. Do the right thing. These are core values at Choice Bank, a community-focused bank that started in North Dakota and has now expanded into Minnesota. Much of their team comes from small towns not unlike Detroit Lakes, and the culture at each location holds the same Midwest work ethic and people-focused mentality of the Thielens. It was because of these similarities that the two partnered when Adam and Caitlin decided to launch the Thielen Foundation. “We’re proud to partner with Adam, Caitlin, and the Thielen Foundation to support their mission to inspire and educate youth in our communities,” said Choice Bank Executive Vice President, Tim Heilman. “It's a privilege to partner with an organization that shares our core beliefs to bettering the places we live and putting People First.” For Adam and Caitlin, it was encouraging to see generous partners in the community who shared similar values. Their shared heart and values propelled the foundation to their launch date, and began garnering national attention.

SERVE, EDUCATE, AND INSPIRE. BETTER THE PLACES YOU LIVE. ACHIEVE YOUR FULL POTENTIAL. DO THE RIGHT THING. CHOICE BANK & THIELEN FOUNDATION VALUES
“When you have partners and people that are committed to what you’re doing, that’s when you have success and that’s when you’re able to help people and make a difference,” Adam said. “At Choice Bank, they don’t just say ‘people first.’ They live it.” Now that it’s launched, the Thielen Foundation has partnered with the Pediatric Behavioral Health unit at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital to help kids overcome adversity and offer support to kids managing mental health challenges. Already, Pete and Jayne are hearing stories of how the foundation is making an impact. “We have people come up to us who have been touched by what they’ve done,” Jayne said. “They’re really just getting started.” When asked how it feels as a parent to watch Adam’s story unfold, she paused. “Honestly, we’re more proud of Adam for that part of it. That ‘off the field’ part,” she said. “I love the heart that he and Caitlin have, that they’re sharing what they have with others. I don’t know how a parent couldn’t be proud of it.”

SPRING 2019
THE THIELEN LEGACY: MORE THAN FOOTBALL This is the greatest joy for Pete and Jayne Thielen. They cheer from the sidelines as Adam’s biggest fans; but where they get the most excited is seeing their three kids live by the values they worked so hard to instill in their family.
“We want to give our grandkids the same things we hoped to give to our own children, the same that our parents gave us,” Pete said. “The importance of faith, of being good people, of working hard to achieve the goals and dreams you have.”
“We’ve watched our kids learn the value of their faith and work hard. They know they have to make it on their own. And they know family is really important,” Jayne said. “You don’t always realize how that impacts generation to generation — that it’s not what we speak, it’s what we do that moves on to that next generation. And now, we’re starting to see them carry that on with their own kids.”
This is the true Thielen legacy. Adam’s prowess on the field will leave its mark on football history — and yet even he recognizes that true success is deeper than this, that it’s a matter of the heart, a matter of character. A matter of carrying on the values taught by his parents, and grandparents; humility, kindness, love.
The next generation of Thielens is currently six grandchildren, all boys; the youngest being Adam and Caitlin’s son Hudson, born in January 2019. Each summer they gather at Pete and Jayne’s lake house to carry on the same summer traditions of generations before; fishing, swimming, campfires, game nights. Already the proud grandparents have started to see that same sparkle in the kids’ eyes when they come to the lake — the sense that this is a place of magic and memories.
“Every day is an opportunity to get better,” Thielen said in his interview with Duluth News Tribune. “I’m just using the previous day to learn from and try to apply that to get better the next day. That doesn’t just come with football. That comes with life. You’re trying to be the best husband, trying to be the best father… learning from mistakes and getting better the next day.”

LAKE MEMO SNO CONES & DREAMS
“My favorite part of being at the lake is having my whole family there. I love it when my grandchildren get out the ‘Sno Cones & Dreams’ cart, bringing a smile to everyone's face and making everyone feel special as they receive a TREAT!”
Brenda Sagert Big Cormorant Lake, Lake Park, MN
My son-in-law bid on this cart at a benefit auction, and it has become a cabin fixture!
We asked people to share their favorite lake memory with us! Here’s what they had to say...
ORIES “My family has had our cabin for 20 years and it’s without a doubt everyone's favorite place to be. I love spending time with my parents, sisters, nieces, and nephews and creating memories with them. My nieces and nephews are getting to the age my sisters and I were when we first started going to the cabin and it's amazing to see all the generations enjoy this shared space.”

“My family and I have loved lake life for as long as I can remember, so when the opportunity arose we hired a house mover to pick up our 2 1/2 story home (originally built as a farm house in the 1880s) and moved it to a quiet lake near where I grew up and first learned to water ski as a young boy. Living on the lake full-time never gets old. You can decide to boat, fish, jetski, or kayak on a whim. The sunrises and sunsets are absolutely amazing and never taken for granted.”
Brent Thielges Twin Lakes, LaMoure, ND
My oldest son water skiing on the same lake I learned on.
BONFIRES “My sister has a beautiful home on Loon Lake, and the first weekend in August, all my brothers and sisters (6 of us), spouses, kids, and grandkids spend the weekend together. We have enough food to feed a small town, and there are plenty of games to play. We fish, boat, swim and sit by the fire pit until early morning, and some of us even sleep in a hammock by the lake. I look forward to it all year and it gets my family together (without going to a funeral.) I’m sure we’ll do this for years to come, and the lake is the best venue for it. It’s simply....Heaven!!”
Tim Karsky Loon Lake, Otter Tail County, MN
My grandson Beckham taking the wheel with my brother-in-law.
“Reading the words ‘lake cabin’ transports me to childhood summers of packing up the whole family (dogs included), and making the 9-hour trek to our family cabin, built in 1934. It conjures memories of an old green cabin filled with decades-old treasures, an old outhouse cleared of spider webs for us to explore, lack of running water–necessitating boiled water pumped from the lake to wash dishes, and counting out the exact change needed to buy an ice cream cone at the Lake Metigoshe Drive-In. If those walls could speak, they would tell stories of children dancing to songs played on a 1915 windup phonograph, memories made without the distraction of TV or internet, and dozens of smiles, declaring aloud that this little old cabin is their ‘favorite place on this earth.’”

REAL ESTATE MARKET UPDATE Spring is around the corner and who does not have cabin fever by now? This past winter has been long, cold and brought us lot’s of snow. The beautiful thing about Lakes Country is its yearround attractions. But for now we like to leave winter and snow behind us to get ready for the open water season! Lake Life is a lifestyle decision and a dream to live for so many people in the area. Whether you like to reside in Lakes Country all year long or if you are looking for a weekend home, there is a place for you here. At Jack Chivers Realty you will find a group of local experts guiding you through the process of finding your place by the water or in the country. It has been 10 years since the housing crisis in 2009 and looking at property values in Lakes Country we can say that we are past any price corrections. Prices in the local area never dropped as significantly as in other places in the U.S.–however, we also had been affected by the recession. During the last 5 years we have experienced a very strong buyer’s market. Many people felt confident enough to invest in lakeshore property again. Real estate prices have been stable and it was a good market to buy.
48
SPRING 2019
Looking at the upcoming sales seasons we believe that it will be a few more strong years at least and more buyers will decide to purchase a second home. Interest rates may go up a little more but property values and affordability seem to justify their purchase decisions. We also feel that property prices are going to stay strong and we will possibly see a long term value increase again. Our local market is very unique and does not compare to any metro real estate market. That’s why it is in your best interest to connect with a local expert. If you are in the market to sell or buy real estate in Lakes Country we would like to introduce ourselves to you. All sales agents are local experts which give you the required insight and knowledge when it comes to owning property here. Contact any of us and we like to introduce our group and service advantage to you.

LAKE ASSOCIATIONS THREE OBJECTIVES EVERY COMMITTEE SHOULD HAVE
In the land of ten thousand lakes it’s easy to understand why keeping order across the many natural wonders would be vastly important. If you’re unfamiliar or maybe a member yourself, here are just a few of the important objectives to establish or improve your own lake committee. SELECT BEACH CAPTAINS Most Lake Committees already have designated beach captains, voted in every year. These people function as a sentinel for the lake and uphold some important duties. Let’s make sure we’ve got those responsibilities covered.
52
SPRING 2019
Welcome New Residents: Seems like the simplest of tasks, so let’s begin here. It’s important to get a good network of neighbors on your lake for a plethora of reasons. However, just making everyone feel welcome can be a huge asset that many forget altogether. It’s also good to make acquaintances and know what the status of their residency are. Meaning, if they’re planning on snowbirding or just coming out on the weekends, maybe it’s a full-time residence. Keeping an eye out for your community is very important, especially on lakes, when people may not reside there all the time. Beach Liaisons: Having a Beach captain also means that someone can watch for violations around the beach area and make sure the lake, in this designated area, is being cared for. Some issues that can occur involve abiding by rules regarding No-Wake zones. If water is particularly high on your lake then waves caused by boats can be damaging to the shoreline. We are probably all aware of these complications so it’s important to help enforce rules of this nature. Divers also tend to visit lakes with public accesses so making them feel welcome and safe is a must. The general rule is to keep boats at least 150 feet from diving flags. Obviously use of boats and jetskis in a considerate fashion is of the interest to everyone.
SOLICIT MEMBERSHIP IN THE LAKES ASSOCIATION If you’re on a lake with or without a Lake Committee it’s important to facilitate a proper meeting place and get members active. This can be as simple as discussing possible meeting places, or just bringing coffee along to entice neighbors to get active.
Speaking of defense… Lake areas can be large and the property lines vast. This puts your neighbors at a distance likely. For better or worse. Burglary and vandalism can happen. But if you know your neighbors and establish another line of defense, then it’s easily to spot activity that might be suspicious.
Just making everyone feel welcome can be a huge asset that many forget. Some lakes have issues with drainage or ordinary water height. This can affect property values significantly. However, it is also a treatable problem when a community comes together to face it. Even if nothing has happened on the lake yet, it’s wise to get a group in place that can handle such issues.
PRINT AND DELIVER ASSOCIATION DIRECTORIES To be a really effective lake association, we should be able to get in contact with one another. If you’re like Detroit Lake, you may have an entire website dedicated to news, for instance, letting lake area residents know about the recent zebra mussel infestation. Since aquatic invasive species can be a real threat to lake ecosystems, letting the community know quickly creates an effective line of defense for such issues.
In conclusion, one of the most important objectives a lake committee should have is the welcoming of all new residents. Establish a strong community by gaining membership and help beach captains serve as a liaison between areas of the lake and the association. Make sure to observe for violations or emergencies in the area, and further communication in an event through use of a group message or other communicate. A directory can be a very important tool in emergency events, so try to keep it up to date and distributed. Setting up an annual meeting is also very helpful to garner a community voice when deciding important matter regarding the lakes area. As we await the Spring thaw, hopefully these tips will help you prep for a productive Summer with your own Lake Committee. More articles and news at jackchiversrealty.com/news

SPRING SCOUTING
GET OUT AND EXPLORE THE WILDLIFE PATTERNS This past winter brought us many cold days cooped up inside. I remember looking out the window seeing the sundogs after another rough blizzard and longing for warmer days and the opportunities that come outside with spring. Now that those days are here, there is no better time to be outdoors. And that's right where you'll find me.

SPRING 2019
I do a lot of my scouting in the spring. The woods are very similar to what they were in the fall. Deer trails stand out, scrapes are visible, and rubs show up easily in the brown vegetation. This can be some very valuable information when fall comes around. It shows how the deer travel your property, especially the bucks. Rubs can provide a lot of intel about how they travel. I like to take a look
at which side of the tree is rubbed. This tells you the direction the buck was traveling at the time he made the rub. Then I ask myself– why is the buck traveling through this area? Was he heading to a food source, looking for does, or maybe heading back to bed after feeding in nearby fields? Once this intelligence has been gathered, I put the information on my aerial photos of the property. I mark the map up with trails, rubs, and scrapes and this helps me put the pieces of the puzzle together. I can look at potential stand locations, and which wind directions would be the best to hunt those stands. One other important aspect that some hunters forget about is the ingress and egress from those stands. Will I be walking across a feeding area in the early morning or late evening when going to or leaving a stand? Do I travel near a bedding area to get into my stand? Not bumping deer off your property as you enter or leave your stand is one of the most important aspects of hunting mature bucks. You don’t want to give away your location!
Rubs can provide a lot of intel about how the bucks travel.
Spring is the time to scout your property for deer movement. However, we cannot forget about the movement taking place above the trees. Songbirds and waterfowl start their migration back to the area this time of year. One of my favorite pastimes (when I was young and had more free time) was to travel the back roads and watch the waterfowl migration. Low areas in fields hold water after the snowmelt and attract waterfowl that feed on the microorganisms living in the water. The males will be in full plumage with their brilliant colors. We have another opportunity here in Western Minnesota that we don’t see in too many places–Prairie Chickens. Prairie Chickens have an area that they use every year to conduct their courting rituals. These areas are called booming grounds. Agencies like the Minnesota DNR, The Nature Conservancy and The Prairie Chicken Society work hand in hand to identify and protect these areas. Some booming grounds will have blinds that are open to the public (by reservation) to come and observe these native birds do their dance. So, whether you are drawn to the return of bustling wildlife, the blooming foliage peeking through melting snow or the inviting warmth of the springtime sun, just be sure you make it out there this season. Get out and explore.
